    M13,
People are suggesting that Bradford’s knees are so bad he may end up out of the league because no team would want to take a chance on his health.

If the QB is in range that the FO/Gase etc. likes, I would draft him too hoping we won’t be drafting this high the next couple of seasons.

At this point with Tannehill coming off of knee surgery and all reports are he’s doing well, he’ll still be 30 before opening day. Nothing wrong with saying okay let’s get back to where we were this time last year but we did draft a young QB who we think makes us better as a team. Now he’s gotta ball. He’s at that point anyway. The team this year bought him an easy 2018 season. Can it be worse than what we’ve seen this year? I don’t think it would have been, we would have been better with him this year. How much I don’t know, but I do believe it would have been pathetic less often. LOL
    ______________________

That said, I think it’s time to see if Tannehill is the guy or go with a young guy. We’re not winning with Moore. If Tannehill fails in some way do you care that we moved onto a new 1st rd QB?

I would think most of us would say no. Tannehill isn’t 25-26 anymore and the team is still trying to find itself. 2018 is his defining season in Miami. The way things are going we will probably have a shot at a QB. If not maybe another position. LOL

  4. I know people don’t want to hear this but I was just thinking, imagine if the Browns took Rosen with the #1 and Barkley with their 2nd first rd pick. Then, traded for Suh. Imagine Suh on that line with Ogbah and Garrett.

  5. Randy says:

    Tim,
Yep, I had read your post. This may be my virginal first/page turn! Lol
    ***
For me, I already know what Tannehill is. He’ll be going into his 7th season. Yes, there are variables that impacted his play over the years, but I think we know what a player is after he’s been in the league this long. He’s not gonna all of a sudden become something he isn’t. Can he get better? Maybe…but maybe this is what he is. Regardless, I think we need to look to the future and bring in a young QB. Tannehill, while I certainly hope not, may not be the same player when he comes back from this injury. We simply don’t know yet.

  6. Randy says:

    M13,
I can’t really ever worry about an NFL player and money. The worst thing that happens to them when they are out of the league is that they may have to try to live just like the rest of us! It’s not like they can never work again. Lol

My biggest fear is we don’t take a qb if we’re top 5 and Tannehill either goes down, goes down for good or just doesn’t get it done and now we’ve got nobody in the pipeline.
    ———
QBs who were drafted in the top-5 over the last 10 years…

’17: Too early to tell if Mitch Trubisky will be nice
’16: Jared Goff looks to be pretty good. Carson Wentz is setting the world on fire
’15: Jameis Winston looks to be fairly good. Marcus Mariota is regressing
’14: Blake Bortles is about to be cut
    ’13: None taken top-5
’12: 2012 NFL HOF inductee Andrew Luck statistically compares to Tannehill and Bortles. RG3 is out of the NFL
’11: Cam Newton is pretty darned good
’10: Sam Bradford has had only 1 nice and almost complete season (’16, 15 starts)
’09: Matthew Stafford has had an up-and-down career, more up than down. Marc Sanchez has always been a joke
’08: Matt Ryan is a STUD

  14. Mike E. says:

    I proclaim 5-11!

  15. rgs322 says:

If we don’t win against Denver, IMO it’s pretty much a guarantee we’ll pick in the top 10. Right now ESPN has us at a little over 60% chance of picking in the top 10. …8.3% in the top 5, and 0% of picking #1.

  16. drg says:

All this talk about drafting a QB is great and all, but only if he’s there for the taking. If we have to move up to get one it is a bad idea. I can’t imagine a QB having success with this team right now. Too many big contracts that will be gone within the next few years and sub par talent/depth. That’s a bad way to build a team. It’ll get a coach fired and then the new coach/FO will want their guy. It’s a cycle we’ve seen far too much.

I’m all for picking up a QB, but only if it’s a value pick or within the curve of the draft. Would much rather see us stockpile young talent and get the pieces in place before making that move. Jax, LAR, and even Philly to some degree have had success with that plan. I think Cleveland may finally figure it out. NYJ and Buffalo are both going to be better than us unless they blow it in FA and try to force the issue.

I agree with many of you that Tannehill probably isn’t the guy to lead us to a SB, but he’s a solid option while we focus on remaking the team. If we need the cap space or there’s a trade out there worth doing then pull the trigger.

That list of top 5 QB picks over the past 7 or so years was interesting. Out of the 13 picks, two of them seem to be borderline elite level (I’m putting Wentz here, but how many of us thought Dak was on that level last year or a guy like Foles?). Only an elite QB is winning games for you regardless of the team around him. Going all in on a rookie QB is a bad idea unless you get lucky and hit the jackpot.

I heard another one earlier today and I don’t even remember who it was bc I can’t keep up anymore

  20. Randy says:

    drg,
I agree with not giving up a bunch of good picks to go after a QB. I’d prefer we move from, say, 5 to 3. But, the other side of the scenario is that you are much more likely to get a “franchise QB” with a top 5 pick than you are in later rounds. Yes, there are examples of later round QBs ending up being decent QBs, but those aren’t the norm. My whole premise was going after a QB IF we had a really high pick to begin with. Also, i’m not saying we HAVE to do it…just that it’s an option if you have a really high pick to begin with. You can always go the other way and try to use it to get a few more picks and hope those picks pan out.

  21. Rockphin says:

De’Veon Smith has been promoted from the practice squad.

On a separate note how are you supposed to pronounce the ‘ in these names? is it a pause, like a comma? Why put a freaking apostrophe in your name??

  22. Rockphin says:

Cutler is off the concussion protocol and back at practice, but now Matt Moore is out. (not at practice today, I can’t find a reason yet)

On a side note there is a guy on PhinPhanatic.com who posted an article calling for us to release Tannehill, Moore & Cutler and bring in Bridgewater as a free agent and then draft Luke Faulk (no idea who he is because i do not follow college sports) and bring in Faulk’s head coach as our new OC……..

  23. Rockphin says:

That is a lot of guys not practicing today.

    Joe Schad

Mike Pouncey, Cam Wake, Ndamukong Suh all not practicing for Miami Dolphins

    Armando Salguero

Matt Moore is not practicing today.

    • Ken says:

The Dolphins are not practicing today which is no different from the rest of the season

    • Tim Knight says:

The top 3 always get a day off in practice and Bushrod is injured and has missed like 1.5 games. Moore is probably sore after being hit and sacked 8 times.

  24. Rockphin says:

Why is the Dolphin / Bronco game being shown on Fox this week? Fox is the NFC channel.

  25. Rockphin says:

Try working with someone who has that in their name. I have to do a 4 digit code to get the little apostrophe over the e in her name when I’m typing it. Not her fault. She didn’t have a say in it when she was named. Also have a problem with women who hyphenate their name when they get married. It’s like saying I don’t think this is going to work out so I’m keeping my old name to make it easier when it’s done. 😂

  28. D says:

“This is why we should trade down from the top 10 to gain extra picks (which I did from #9 to #17) and gained an extra 2 and 3.”

BBMike, if we are at like 5, i could see trading down to 17 including a 2nd and a 3rd, but people don’t like going 2 rounds with no picks, especially with them being the 2nd and the 3rd. You would have to find a trade partner with not a lot of needs, and maybe one specific need and a really elite player still in play for them Thats not normally found in teams picking in the dead middle of a round. I think you’d be more likely to find a team willing to trade you a 2nd and a future 2nd, or even a future first before giving up all of their day 2 picks.

As for your draft i like what ya did with it. I may not be in love with the players or i might not agree with the round they are speculating you could take them in, but the overall draft strategy you had was a good one. I also completely agree with you that if we are picking in the top 10, there are only about 2-3 scenarios that wouldn’t have me staying put and they would involve players i expect to go in the top 5, at need positions, or being unable to find a trading partner. The idea of a trade back is great in theory but you have to find someone who will want to move up and you have to find someone who wants to give you the value you expect in return, and that’s not so easy to do.

    • teams have been getting a king’s ransom for a top 5 pick. If we’re sitting at #5 and we trade down to #17 we better get about 5 draft picks with that trade, including a 2nd & 3rd this year, otherwise, you don’t make that trade.

teams are going to be fighting to get up there to get their quarterback and someone’s gonna have a huge woody for Barkley as well. so, if they want the pick they better be willing to pony up for it.

however, if we’re in that top five and Rosen’s still on the board when we pick we also can’t pass him up. regardless of what Tannehill does, this is how team get better. if Tannehill is a go for the season and Rosen gets to sit for a year then so be it. then you trade Tannehill for more picks and solidify that roster.

  29. D says:

I like Smith, i think he is going to be a good addition to the team, with good chances of solidfying a spot for himself next year. He is a true downhill runner and he looked good in pass protection when i did a little research on him after we signed him as an UDFA. We will see if it translates to the NFL, but im pretty excited by this addition.

    • Tim Knight says:

He seems limited with speed and quickness but could be a hammer on 1st down at times and in short yardage. Don’t see him being on the field much on 3rd and 4 or more though.

    My guess is Landry.

I have an accent in my last name (Paré) and I do not know the code you use to get the accent over the E so I have to type Cafe and it puts the accent in for me and then I delete the C and F and put in the P and R. I’ve gotten around this on my personal and work computer by making spell check automatically change it. LOL I only have problems now if I have to use the word pare as in pare down the costs or pare the skin from an apple. Then it puts the accent in and I say screw it. 😉

Grant had 33 carries in college, and Landry had none, so you never, ever know. lol

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah but Landry has 26-119 in the pros. Grant has 1-1 so far. Not saying we won’t try Grant on a few runs, just hasn’t really happened yet.

I thought Landry had a rush against the Pats but it’s not on the stat sheet. Maybe it was called back. LOL

    • stangerx says:

I could actually see them going Grant in long 3rd situations. They would know he ain’t gonna block and mostly will flex out, but he could be the run/screen/draw play option from hell.

  34. ElephantRider says:

I think Grant won’t be used at all. Nothing indicates that he would. This offense is beyond stagnant and he’s yet to even be on the field for the most part. He’s done nothing in the kick game either.

    • stangerx says:

He might not be used at all….but we’ve all seen what he can do in the open field. Not like you, me and Gase haven’t given a lot of thought on how to make that happen. Problem is seems the kid’s hands ain’t great and neither are his quick decisions.

    • One of the things that gets me about this franchise and has for quite some time is that we seem to draft guys without a clue as to how we’re going to use them or how they will fit in our scheme whether it be on offense or defense.

I know a lot of people are down or Carroo and Grant, especially with the picks we put into getting Carroo, but if they’re not getting in the games I put more of an emphasis on the coaching than on the players themselves. Maybe I’m wrong but if these guys don’t at least get a chance on the field you’re never going to know what they’re capable of.

Going against your own guys all the time doesn’t tell you a hell of a lot. Put them in game situations and let’s see what they can do. I still say that either of them on an offense that has more creativity to it are a lot more productive than what they’ve done in Miami.

I can see if they’re not putting the work into getting better but if they’re just stuck on the depth chart because you’ve got guys penciled in front of them that’s not good enough. You’re wasting talent you should be developing.

      • stangerx says:

But that is what I love about how the last draft went…..they drafted talent as they saw it for the future. And I was in one of the front seats in the bus on we should go OL. But they were smarter than me and looking towards the long-term.

Not happy about the season, but love the overall moves so far. Haven’t had so much faith in the people running the team since….well…the ones who were last season. And if you want to go before that, then name when you did. For me at least 20 years.

      • But that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Did they not have a vision of how they would use either Carroo or Grant on the team? They drafted both and now they stand on the sidelines. Okay, maybe Grant hasn’t been what they expected returning punts and kicks. It’s year two. Guys get better. Coach them up and get them to where you need them to be.

I’m just saying how do you draft Carroo when you have Parker, Stills and Landry and THEN you’re going to think to yourself he’s going to have a tough time seeing the field because of the other three? Why weren’t we using a fourth wr? Other teams do.

I just think the creativity or the lack thereof is troublesome, especially from an offensive point of view. why do you have the guys if you’re not going to use them?

  35. Phindog says:

    Thats G’Rant

  36. Tim Knight says:

Part of Grant’s problem on returns is he doesn’t look to go forward enough, he always cuts it back laterally trying to make something happen that isn’t there. Hit the opening get some yards then look to make a bigger play. He does that from the get go too often and gets nothing out of it.

    • stangerx says:

Depends on which returns. On punts…..he’s useless unless it is a boomer, which is why they put Landry in there. On kickoffs he is a weapon, but man does he make stupid moves on when to bring out and when to take a knee.

      • Tim Knight says:

He’s not progressing from what I have seen. Very few guys his size even as fast as they might be make it in the NFL. But nothing wrong with using a 6th rd pick on a guy to see if he’s one who can.

  37. Phindog says:

    Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero

Dolphins have been awarded TE A.J. Derby off waivers per league source

  38. Mike E. says:

Are we pulling an old Beli-trik getting Derby? I would think so, we need all the help we can get, and more . . . .

  39. Mike E. says:

That’s farty for Duarte us getting Derby.

  40. Tim Knight says:

I’m not a big believer in if young players don’t get a lot of playing time it’s because coaches don’t know how to use them or develop them. That’s always a sign that it’s on the player because coaches will do whatever it takes to win. The idea that you just throw guys in games to see what they can do is also off. It starts in practice and if they’re not showing it there, they’re not playing or they’re not going to be very involved. Depth incase of injuries might be where they stand. And that may not last long if that’s all they are and I think Carroo and Grant might be reaching that point. They’ll get a chance to compete again in the 2018 offseason and PS, but I’m sure we’ll look for guys to compete with them.

    • Tim Knight says:

Easy example is Zach Thomas his rookie season. He was a 5th rd pick and was viewed by Jimmy Johnson as a STs guy and backup MLB. But during camp Zach was making play after play leading to the release of veteran Jack Del Rio who didn’t play STs and Zach beat him out for the starting job.

    • Mike E. says:

I think it’s a combination of both Tim. If you draft a guy, hopefully you’ve done your homework on how the kid listens and learns from his coaches. It seems as if they took Carroo strictly by his athletic ability, and not his ability to hone his craft. Grant was more of a longshot anyway, so no problem there, but they gave up extra picks to get Carroo, you’d think they would know what his deal is.

      • Tim Knight says:

How is that any different from any other prospect who doesn’t pan out including 1st rd picks who do not pan out and are out of league in a few years?

      • Mike E. says:

How is it different? At least with a 1st RD pick, you’re going to put them on the field and see what he can do. How many snaps has Carroo had? Just a rhetorical question, but Carroo barely sees the field. It’s so frustrating to me in year 2, he can’t find any playing time. I think Lou is right, you have to have a plan going forward. We had Parker and Landry, and we re-signed Stills, so did we really need Carroo? If he’s going to be the guy next year because either Landry or Parker are gone then it’s about time we see what this kid can do.

  41. Tim Knight says:

Derby is probably a guy for 2018. He has a shoulder injury and may not be able to play the rest of this season.

  42. Tim Knight says:

Mike, some 1st or even 2nd rd picks do not start or play much if they’re busting out of the gate. It’s happened plenty of times. These guys are seen all week and if they’re not getting it done in the building and in practice not sure how seeing it in a game changes anything. I guess that’s for the fans and media to say ahhhh… now I see why. The coaches already knew that. They’re not concerned with our evaluations.

I’ve heard this from fans and media for years and I’ve also heard coaches and former coaches address it and they ALL say the same thing. “Well that starts in practice.”

My opinion is formed based on hearing and reading this info. from people who coach. We fans have a very easy well let’s just try this way of thinking. That’s not how coaches do it. The player has to be prepared enough for that opportunity and sometimes they’re not good enough. Look at the recent Nathan Peterman and Paxton Lynch performances. They didn’t look like they belonged in the league.

Teams miss on prospects all the time.

  43. stangerx says:

“Teams miss on prospects all the time.” — exactly where I start from. And looking like Carroo might have been a miss no matter how excited they were about him at the time. But then……

“The spring of 1998 set the stage for one of the great pre-draft debates of all time: Ryan Leaf vs. Peyton Manning. In the lead-up to Round 1, the NFL community went back and forth on whether the strong-armed Leaf out of Washington State or the accomplished Manning from Tennessee should be the first player taken. After months of intrigue, Manning went No. 1 to the Colts and Leaf went No. 2 to the Chargers.”

    • Tim Knight says:

50% with 1-2 is bad. That’s how unpredictable it is. The 2018 offseason will be huge for this regime. Fail and they’re fucked.

      • stangerx says:

For sure that is an extreme example, but find me an NFL expert at the time who didn’t think after Peyton was taken that Leaf was not the logical #2. Best they could say was…..”would have traded him for his value at the time.”

      • Tim Knight says:

Lot’s of examples, Stanger. Not all 1-2 but top 10.

  44. Randy says:

I haven’t been impressed with our FO choices the past couple of years. The trade last year was a waste. Most of their picks have been so-so. I think they make stupid moves, such as the trade for Caroo. That never made sense. I also don’t agree that these “professionals” are any better at evaluating talent than some fans. What they do have is more information than fans can ever have. But, even with that extra information they still screw up often….just more evidence that when you’re drafting humans….nothing is a sure thing. I can live with missing on guys, but Tbomb seems to like to give up picks to do it. That sucks.

    • Tim Knight says:

We have five rookies playing significant time on defense and our offense has some youth playing as well. Rookie kicker and punter. Young players on returns. Then when it doesn’t work so great, we look for the next reason to blame someone for it.

There are only a few teams who can claim to be really good consistently, and most of them have a QB they believe in and stability with coaching.

What was the Tbomb trade that wrecked the team?

      • Tim Knight says:

Sorry not rookie kicker, we landed a guy we liked better. What I’m trying to say is we’ve made a lot of changes this offseason and injuries also altered the initial plan. Maybe it was too much in one offseason or this is the long-term plan even with the change in the team due to injuries, trades and cuts. Not much has gone smoothly to say the least. LOL

    • olddolphan says:

ABSOLUTELY TRUE that some fans are better at evaluating talent than some “professionals.” Those professionals have access to every tidbit of info yet, when the day is done I’d take some guys on this site over anything any of Ross’s GM’s have accomplished. Ireland, Hickey, and T-Bomb, collectively have produced a team that is near the bottom, talent-wise, and OVER THE SALARY CAP as of the moment!! If any of you think these guys have spent Ross’s money wisely (over all) I’d like you to explain it. My buddy MF-13 undoubtedly could have gotten more talent for less money, as could Mike E., especially if they’d had full access to all the information Ireland, Hickey and T-Bomb had access to. And any time T-Bomb wants to match wits with PIGGY, my money’s on the Flying Pig.

This weekend me and Mrs. OD will first travel from north of Tampa to Boca Raton to see the Conference USA Championship Game, North Texas State (9-3) vs. FAU (9-3) in a game to be televised on ESPN-2 at 12 NOON. Our seats are on the west side, lower deck, 11 rows up. The home standing Owls are about 10 point favorites to make North Texas their 9th consecutive victim. Ace FAU running back, Devin Singletary, needs 3 more touchdowns to reach 30 TD’s this season. He is the leading scorer in all of Division I football. This is the FIRST TIME FAU has ever hosted a conference title game in their 12 years in Division I. This ole alum CAN’T WAIT!!
      ———————
SUNDAY, me and the Mrs. will drive about 22 miles from my sister’s house in Pompano to Hard Head Stadium to see Denver at Miami. Incredibly, minus their starter, Denver is said to be a 1 point favorite. I’ll be wearing my AJAYI JERSEY adorned with “TRADE ROSS!” just above AJAYI’s name on the back. This game could get ULTRA UGLY!!! The 30,000 or so souls actually in the stadium will, no doubt, be singing praises for this wonderful season. Hope to see some of you at this game.

I’m not against taking advantage of a high draft pick for a QB if it makes sense. If RT can’t progress in the next year or two, we have a young guy who maybe can. Ryan will be 30 next season so having a rook with upside behind him makes sense now. We’re not winning with Cutler or Moore and that ship will sail.

  47. Randy says:

    Tim,
And none of those guys you mentioned are anything to write home about. Where’s the homerun? Where’s the 4th or 5th round pick that plays like a 1st or 2nd? I’m not saying you should expect those things, but it would be nice once in a while at least. None of our moves/players were anything any other FO couldn’t have done. I really don’t see how you can point to any of these guys as an example of anything special. Godchaux is the only one playing well… not great but good, and we’ll see how he plays once Suh isn’t next to him.
    ***
I never claimed Tbomb “wrecked” the team, so I have no idea where that come from. I just think most of his moves have either made no sense or didn’t really bring any extra value to the team. We’ll see how things progress in the years to come.

    • Tim Knight says:

You always keep raising the bar. It’s been a bad season but plenty of building through the draft and youth is happening. Maybe most fans can’t handle that transition though it sounds good in theory. LOL

  48. Randy says:

    Wyoming,
    What is a “big-time” throw?

  49. Tim Knight says:

Randy, my point on Tbomb is what did he do to make him a topic of generic statements for you?

“I can live with missing on guys, but Tbomb seems to like to give up picks to do it. That sucks.”

We’ve moved around in the draft but always had our 1-3 and 7 or 8 total picks thus far under him. It sucks when the trade doesn’t work. Carroo? A 4th to move up in the 2nd for Howard who I think could still become very good. What other trades?

  50. The Flying Pig says:

    Pervy for Derby!!!

  51. Carroo comes out, catches one pass for 28 yds and is never targeted the remainder of the game. He got 1 shot, made a nice catch for a pretty nice gain. I’m not buying it. This is either more about the coaches thinking they know more than everyone else, they’re stubborn or they just want to play only the top guys because they feel that’s what gives them the best chance to win and they don’t want to be called out for not playing them when they give someone else a shot if it doesn’t work out.

There was a point where we used 4 wr’s on offense. That was with Philbin and Lazor and the fourth guy was Matthews. We go with our three guys and our one tight end and that’s it. We don’t utilize enough of the weapons that we have available by having a more complex and creative offense and I truly believe utilizing more of those weapons gives us a better chance to win.

I just have a tough time believing these guys can’t get it done in some way to help out our team. We see guys like this all the time on other teams being used in creative ways or just to help spell a starter from time to time. Even if it’s just to throw in a wrinkle so the defense doesn’t know the play because it’s a different player being used. Whatever. And with the offense being as ineffective as it is I have a tougher time believing these guys can’t help because the coaches aren’t getting it done with the guys they’re using either. Especially when you look at how effective Williams has been the last few games but he wasn’t being used that way earlier in the season. These coaches didn’t know what they had.

    • Tim Knight says:

You’re not a coach. It’s not like cooking where you say maybe I’ll add more sage. If it sucks you throw it out. If a coach acts like that he gets fired real early.

      • Tim Knight says:

Also Carroo’s longest catch is 21 and he did get a shot against BAL with 6-48. It’s nothing special.

      • If I were a coach I’d sure as hell be doing a lot better job than they’ve done. Why was Williams taken out of the offense earlier in the season when he was doing well last season and the season before? What’s their reasoning for that? Then they start using him again after they let go of Ajayi and he’s doing his thing again. People are quick to point out that Tannehill improved under Gase and became more effective.

Why can’t other players improve under him as well? Ever think that maybe Williams would be further along at this time had he been used more to this point in the season? If Gase had been utilizing his guys properly from day one this year maybe we could see they were building on something that would give us some momentum for the remainder of the season. But, the way he handled the players he has on offense this year I think you can question a lot of the moves he made.

The best coaches take chances on guys and they make it work. If you’re worried about getting fired you’re not going to take those chances and you’re going to get fired because you’re going to be too cautious to be effective.

      • okay. so 21 yds. and you say 6 for 48 is nothing special but you keep building on that. you sit the guy and he never improves. keep using him. give him confidence. how does a guy improve if he feels like he’s always getting beat down? I’m sorry, but this is TERRIBLE coaching. Terrible.

      • by the way, the nothing special that Carroo did vs BAL was better than what Landry did vs BAL. The kid deserves a shot. I’m sorry but these coaches downright suck right now.

  52. Randy says:

    Tim,
He gave up picks to get Caroo….probably when he didn’t even have to…and why do it anyway unless you are pretty damn sure the guy you’re going after is worth it? Then, the draft day trade with Philly last year basically netted us a slightly above average LB who can’t cover TEs. A player we could probably draft in the middle rounds anyway. And, we could have had Tunsil anyway, so getting him with a lower pick really meant nothing other than saving them a little on his salary. Then, we trade away a pro bowl RB for a 4th round pick? I don’t care if he was a cancer in the locker room…which I don’t believe anyway….that was a horrible value trade. It’s not about where Ajayi was drafted….that wasn’t his value. It’s about his value once he was in the league…and he was a young RB coming off a pro bowl year. For a 4th round pick? The FO/coaches can spin it any way they like to placate fans, but it was still a bad value trade.

    • Tim Knight says:

You went off the question. Ajayi has nothing to do with missing on guys in the draft. That was also not a Tbomb thing. What you think one day he said that’s it we’re trading Ajayi and Gase said uhh… okay? Or did Gase say I can’t keep committing to this guy, he plays his own game out there?

  56. Randy says:

    Tim,
My guess is Gase said: “These guys are ruining my reputation, and I have no control over my players or how they practice and play. I need to do something. Wait, let me get rid of my best offensive player because I can’t figure out how to work with or coach him. We’ll just tell everyone he wasn’t putting in the work and was a malcontent. Fans will buy it.” Did that sum it up for ya? Lol

  57. Whatever the case may have been with the picks we made in the past & any trades we made to get certain players I think everyone can agree we need to do a much better job of drafting the talent that fits this team and develop that talent to help the team.

We can’t continue to keep filling the holes with all these short-term, highly paid free agents who aren’t getting it done for us anyway. How do we expect to have any consistency when we’re signing so many guys to one or two year contracts and players are constantly coming and going?

  58. Tim Knight says:

Let’s just say the fucking Carroo trade would have no impact on the status of this team. Geez! LOL

But, just because you’re a positive, glass half full person doesn’t mean you’re right….you’re just more positive. I can’t think of one thing i’ve seen this year that is positive and gives me hope. We’ll get to play a much easier schedule next year…probably win 9 or 10 games and fans will think we’re something we’re not, again. But, that’s okay. It’s just entertainment and supposed to be enjoyed. Sometimes I forget that. Your positive outlook reminds me that it’s supposed to be fun.

    • Tim Knight says:

Have you read what I’ve said about this team’s performance this year? My positive outlook is based on debunking BS about what this team has done. They have built mainly through the draft but nobody has the patience for it. LOL

  62. Randy says:

    Tm,
I was just thinking. How many years have you been telling me that we’re close…we’re getting better….we have good players? And, I keep saying we are a few years away….our personnel is average…we’re spinning our wheels? It must be a decade at least. I’m not ripping on you. I just realized we have been having this same conversation for a long, long time.
    ****
So, if we truly have been building thru the draft, have we been successful at it? I don’t think any team builds purely thru the draft. We have signed our fair share of FAs too. I agree with building through the draft, but it means you have to get your draft picks right. Have we? It sure doesn’t look like it so far. Young players HAVE to produce right away. They don’t get a lot of time to sit and learn anymore.

    • I agree. It’s the same conversation over and over again. The team goes for the quick fix by trying to be competitive by signing free agents instead of doing their jobs and drafting players who can help the team. Maybe it’s just that there’s not enough really good coaches out there who can take the talent and make it competitive. I don’t know. It sure looks like it.

When you’ve got one coaching staff after another coming in and doing nothing better than the last coaching staff maybe that’s what it is. But, why wouldn’t you have the patience to build thru the draft when it’s clear that signing free agents to fill in holes as a quick fix hasn’t been the answer. Like I said previously, I don’t care if we take a step backwards next year or even the next two years if it looks like we’re finally getting it right.

Actually, I need to compress my list down to 8 players… that’s what I usually do. But these guys listed above are really impressing me.

  64. Randy says:

If I remember, we traded a 6th round pick in 2016 and a 3rd and 4th in 2017 for Caroo….who has about 10 catches in 2 years. Plus, I think most people felt Caroo would have been there with our original pick…but who can say. I think any way you slice it that was a pretty bad trade unless Caroo really becomes a much more productive player in the years to come. Maybe he does, but it’s an example of a move that just felt stupid at the time and still does.

    • I really didn’t have a problem with the Carroo pick and, to be honest, I still don’t. I still think this is more of a failure on the part of the coaches than it is on the part of the player. For one, like I mentioned before, if you didn’t have a clue as to how you were going to use him in your offense why would you make that trade to get him?

But, I think the inability to get him involved in the offense is more on the coaches than it is on him. I just don’t think they know how to get him in there which is a huge waste of talent IMO.

  65. Tim Knight says:

Since 2014 we have 20+ drafted players and a few on IR still on the team. Some have stuck and some have gone. But we still have 20+ within the org on the 53 and along with the PS and IR. UDFAs as well. That’s half the roster. Maybe we need a little more special than more depth. I think we have that. We need some special.

  66. Randy says:

    M13,
Josey Jewell: LB from Iowa….shhhhhh. 😉

  67. Randy says:

    lou,
What’s to like about Caroo? If he was good, he’d be getting playing time. It may be partly on the coaches, but I don’t think you can put it all on their shoulders. If a guy is good, they find their way onto the field. It’s not like he’s playing behind Randy Moss and Jerry Rice here. Bad trade to give up 3 picks for a guy who can’t get on the field. I would have liked to have those 3&4 round picks this past year, wouldn’t you?

  68. Randy says:

    M13,
He’s a tough, smart competitor who makes a lot of tackles and is decent in coverage. He may be a little too small to play MLB in the NFL, but he has really great intangibles and is a playmaker. My only concern is that he has had some shoulder issues. They aren’t supposed to be a long term concern, but you never know with LBers. Their shoulders take a lot of punishment. Maybe it drops him in the draft, and we can snatch him up in the 4-5 rounds. He’s probably not a special player….just a really sound guy who competes his ass off and is a leader.

    • mf13ss says:

His 6 career INTs speak to me, along with his 10 career sacks. I think he could be a player, man. We’ll check that shoulder really good at the Combine.

You’ve got me wanting to check his tape out, and so I shall. Not tonight, but soon!

    2017 Draft

No. 70: New York Jets → Minnesota (D). The Jets traded their third-round selection (70th) to Minnesota in exchange for Minnesota ‘s third- and fifth-round selections (79th and 160th).
    ———–
I presume we could have had the No. 70 pick if we traded our 2017 third- and fourth-round selections (86th and 128th). Our package would have been 25 overall selections earlier (214 to 239) than the Vikings package.

Here’s the problem: we traded our 2017 third- and fourth-round selections (86th and 128th… along with swapping 6th Rounders) in the 2016 Draft to land Leonte Carroo (Mr. 23 games, 10 receptions, 98 yards). Damien Williams has equaled that production for us over the last 3 games alone.

And who was the No. 70 pick in the 2017 Draft? PAT ELFLEIN

Now before anyone cites, “But the stej would never have done that deal with us!”, don’t think a team before No. 70 (such as the 49ers) wouldn’t have made that deal with us.

We’ve got to stop getting cute on Draft day, Tannenbaum and Grier. The Carroo selection is going to go down as another DT3-like trade-up failure.

    • Ken says:

It’s been such a long since I have seen a reference to DT3. It still sends a shiver down my spine though

    • and as I stated before, this is the coaching staff who was involved in the pick on draft day. so, if you had no clue as to how you were going to use him in the offense and if you didn’t feel you needed another wr and weren’t going to utilize him because you had Landry, Parker and Stills then why would you pick him?

Just like I don’t believe the narrative on Ajayi I don’t believe the narrative on Carroo not being able to see the field because he’s not good enough. It may be just my opinion but I think these coaches wouldn’t know talent if it bit them in the ass. Or, they just don’t have a clue how to use the talent they have in their game plan.

Would you trade Carroo to the Pats? I wouldn’t. I would be anything we’d regret that one.

  70. Tim Knight says:

    We have 1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b, 6, 7a, 7b.

I would not care if we used some extra picks to move up for prospects/players we feel are superior. Enough with depth and development. Add playmakers!!!!!

    • Mike E. says:

Or use 6 picks, 2 or 3 for another screw-up. Save the picks, save the heartache. They’re just not good with the trade ups. Name one good trade up where we traded multiple picks to move up that worked well in the last 10 years. Good luck with that, and for every 1, I’ll find 5 more that didn’t.

  71. Mike E. says:

We traded back into the 3rd RD (Pick #86), they gave up a 2016 6th RD pick, and 2017 3rd and 4th RD picks for Carroo. He had 10 TD’s @ Rutgers in 2015, he has 10 total receptions and 97 yards receiving in 2 nearly 2 seasons, with 1 TD. Woo hoo! They gave up a lot to get him, it just looks ridiculous when you can’t even get the kid on the field. We can debate this forever, but if you can’t hit on a guy you use 3 picks for, then don’t do it anymore. T-Bomb himself said he’s changed, but moves like that are the same old T-Bomb as far as I’m concerned. Keep your picks, you have a better shot of hitting on someone with the extra picks, rather than consolidating them for one special screw-up!

    • again, you look at what Williams has been doing the last 3 games and you’ve got to say “why weren’t they using him that way earlier in the season?” if they were we may be further along now on offense than where we are right now. same goes for Drake. the offense has been moving the ball more effectively in the last few games with Drake and Williams in there.

Why did it take the coaches this long to get these two involved in the offense? Because they don’t know how to use the talent they have. That’s why.

      • Ken says:

I thought it was because Ajayi was our feature back. I am confused I thought you wanted Ajayi as the bell cow but are you now saying they should have traded Ajayi sooner?

      • Here we go with the nonsense. See ya later.

      • Ken says:

I was being a little bit of a ball breaker but seriously Lou you are taking contrary positions on one hand you have complained that we traded away our bell cow running back and the other you complain it took them to long to properly utilize Williams and Drake. There’s only so many snaps in a game. It is kind of hard to do one or the other

      • Ken,
my point was I don’t think the coaches know what they have in talent. had they been using Williams and Drake more in the offense in the ways they’ve been using them recently maybe we would have been more effective on offense earlier on and the running game would have been more effective.

I just don’t think they’ve got a good handle on what they’ve got talent-wise and I just hate to see the team just giving up on players over and over and getting rid of talent that could be better if we had the coaches to teach them their jobs.

Not saying necessarily that Gase is the entire problem but he is the head coach and it’s his staff. Maybe he needs to make some changes to that staff in the offseason and get things fixed.

      • Ken says:

Fair enough Lou. I am not sure I completely agree but something is obviously missing with this team and maybe it is talent evaluation.

  72. Tim Knight says:

LOL, I’m sorry but some stuff I’m reading is so second guessing it’s silly. We could of drafted Alvin Kamara and he’d be perfect for us.

M13, the Elflein stuff. What’s our record with him?

  73. Randy says:

    Tim,
I made these same comments about Caroo when we drafted him. I also said Elflein was the guy i’d draft if we wanted to go after a G/C instead of Pocic. This isn’t second guessing. But, even if it were, that’s kinda what we do here. Lol

  74. wyoming85 says:

If we go top 5 in the draft get me this guy!

  75. son of a son of a shula says:

Tim the running play Landry had last week was actually a shovel pass so it goes down as a pass play.

  76. Ken says:

I think Randy nailed the most likely explanation on Carroo he just isn’t very good. I am sure there is something we liked about him coming out of college but either it’s practice habits or game intelligence he just doesn’t demonstrate enough to the coaching staff to justify putting him on the field.

  77. wyoming85 says:

But this is the safe pick if we are around 10

  78. Although I do like Jewel as a LB prospect I don’t know if he has the speed/athleticism to stay with rb’s or te’s. I would really much rather someone like Lorenzo Carter or Tremaine Edmunds as a player for us to target. Both have great range and are playmakers and have the ability to be something special at the next level.

  79. time for me to take a nap before I go to bed.

  80. Randy says:

    lou,
Jewell is probably a mid round guy, but I like the way he plays. I don’t spend a lot of time fretting over top round guys…those are pretty easy to pick by most. I like trying to find mid round gems. That’s the fun of the draft for me.

    • Oh, I still like Jewell. A lot. And I like doing that as well. Only thing is when it comes to LB I’m really not looking at the mid round guys. It’s okay at something like RB because you can find a guy in the 4th or 5th who could probably start for you if your o line is good enough but I want playmakers at LB and that’s much harder to get that late.

  81. wyoming85 says:

Then trade down int the 20’s to get either

But, seriously, would you take Nelson if we’re in the top 5-8? I’m not so sure about that.
    ———-
That’s when ya trade back a few spots — gathering more picks — and pray he’s still there when you’re back on the clock.

  83. One last thing before I go take my nap, IF we were top five and somehow Rosen fell to us he’s the guy I’d want. I’m banging the table for him.

  84. Randy says:

One of the weird things is that Forrester was supposedly a very highly regarded OL coach. Putting aside he was coked up, he sure didn’t coach up our OL. I suppose it just goes to show that sometimes reputations don’t mean much. But then…was it coaching or personnel? Tony Sparano is doing a fabulous job with a bunch of nobodies on the OL in Minny.

  85. mf13ss says:

    Randy,

It’s crazy, dude. We’ve had some very highly regarded O-Line coaches in recent memory: Chris Forrester, John Benton, Tony Sparano and Joe Philbin were natty O-Line coaches, and even Hudson Houck. Yet… for whatever reason, our O-Lines have SUCKED since the mid-2000s.

  86. Randy says:

    M13,
It’s 80% about the players, bud.

    • mf13ss says:

I can’t disagree with that! It’s high time we put some resources into a young and strong O-Line. We’ve got a good start with Tunsil… I’ve faith that he’s going to come around and be very good for us.

      • I guess it just goes to show that sometimes coaches get too much credit for the jobs they do. It’s just like anything else. Some coaches can make it work even with a lot of injuries to the offensive line. Somehow, they hold it together. But, most coaches can’t do that. Most need the talent there in order to succeed. So, it’s probably more 50/50 than it is great coaching.

  87. ElephantRider says:

Well they like Carroo better than Scott, since they just waived him…..

  88. I’ll concede that Elflien was definitely the way to go in the 2nd because we’d need on less guy on the line. He was one of the players I really wanted. I’ll also say this. I would have rather they went o line in the first two rounds. I also think Harris wasn’t the right way to go in the first.

Had we chosen an offensive linemen in the first two rounds we’re probably looking at two starters and TWO less guys we’d need at this point. And, maybe we don’t have the shit show on the o line we’ve got this year.

  89. we could have had a number of combinations of picks on the offensive line this last draft. we discussed this at length before the draft. Ramczyk, Robinson, Elflein, Lamp, Dawkins, Fenney. It is what it is I guess. coulda, shoulda, woulda. had we gone in that direction and taken two guys like Dawkins or Feeney and Elflein we would be well on our way to filling up the offensive line with starters but we went in a different direction. so, here we are again having the same conversation.

  90. What’s going to be funny is if we were to go 1 and 2 with guys like Nelson and Price and then we get a new offensive line coach and he’s successful, people will be singing his praises for the job he’s done. lol
