Week 14 – Game 13 – Patriots @ Dolphins

Miami-Dolphins-Vs-New-England-Patriots-NFL-Poster

Monday Night Football!  Dolphins go prime time again!  Prime Time has been nothing less than brutal for our “Not Ready for Prime Time Players”.

vs Saints in London – LOSS 20-0

vs Ravens TNF  – LOSS 40-0

vs Panthers MNF – LOSS 45-21

So basically, 3 games in prime time, and we were outscored 105-21.  That’s unbelievably hideous.  I don’t know what to expect from our Dolphins after we drubbed the Broncos senseless on Sunday 35-9.  Will that be the team that shows up on Monday night, or is it the NRFPTP troop?  I wish I could tell you, but I just haven’t a clue as to what’s going to happen.  If I’m being honest, I’m not really expecting us to be in this game, I just can’t imagine we’re going to put it all together against an NFL team like the Patriots who is just methodically dismantling every team they play.  Even on a day where QB Tom Brady has a poor game, they win easily.  They are a tough beat at 10-2, they really are.  On the other hand, we usually give them one tough game per year, so maybe this is it.

gronk-suspended-story

Well, Gronk did us a favor last week when he got all frustrated that the Patriots didn’t get a call for once on what he thought was defensive holding at the least, or even pass interference on Bills DB Tre’Davious White, so Gronk took matters upon himself to dish out judgement, and after doing a whiny little dance about not getting the call, he promptly turned around, and dove on top of White who was already face down on the sidelines, and delivered a vicious forearm shiver to his helmet.  Gronk should probably be missing a few games for that, but he happens to play for the Patriots, so . . .

I’d love to see Drake have another strong game, and I would really love to see Devante Parker have a freaking big game for once!  If Parker does nothing, I’d sit his ass and start Leonte Carroo III at least for one game, while the embarrassed Parker assumes the bench role Carroo III currently owns.  Who knows, maybe the kid will finally show us why we traded up for him.  I’d also love to see the defense play like they did last week, and make some big plays and turn the Pats over a few times.

Anyway, enjoy the game, and hope for the best!

Lou, the main problem with the OL has been Pouncey and James have missed considerable time and the guard position has been sub par using how many different guys there the last few years? Who was the last guard we had that you would consider a staple? Oh right the awful human being Incognito who doesn’t belong in the NFL as long as it’s in Miami but it’s just fine and dandy that he can play in Buffalo. Talk about being screwed because of one weak minded individual who isn’t even playing anymore.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

ACTUALLY, TIM. the main culprit is the FO that has been unable/unwilling to draft THE RIGHT PLAYERS to cure this team’s O-Line shortcomings (with the 2017 draft being a classic example). It’s tough to be confident about 2018’s O-Line if the T-Bomb/Grier team is making the selections.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We did draft Tunsil in 2016 in the 1st round. The prior GM Hickey signed Albert, drafted James 1st round, Turner 3rd round and Douglas 4th rd. The problem is some of them didn’t pan out and others can’t stay on the field. It just hasn’t worked out. So I don’t buy that we haven’t tried in recent years. T-Bomb/Grier have only been VP/GM together for two years. I’d be shocked if OL wasn’t a major focus in the offseason. We’ll see.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM: I didn’t say we haven’t tried to draft O-Line players. I DID SAY T-BOMB & GRIER have been unable to pick THE RIGHT PLAYERS.

I disagree that RT17 has an arsenal to work with. Landry, Stills are really the only playmakers. Drake may become a real good back, but that is it.
    ———-
I got too far behind myself when talking about the ????? in ’18, LOL. I’m assuming we address most, if not all of them. And if I have it MY way, we’ll land Mike Gesicke, TE, PSU, and Rashaad Penny, RB/KR/PR, San Diego State. And I still have faith that DeVante is going to emerge (though I may be in the minority).

Keep in mind that if we adequately address the O-Line, the RBs will have a lot more space to run through and Tannehill will have more time to throw.

So with THAT stated, I feel Tannehill will have plenty of weapons… at least that’s my hope. Time shall reveal, man!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m looking forward to seeing Drake continue to get opportunities. For some reason people feel he can’t be the main RB. Not saying he’s a 30+ touch guy but I do think he can be in the 20s and he showed that last week. He looked really good and he’s a natural receiver. He might be the most explosive player on our team. 65 rushes this year with 66 and 42 yard TD runs along with another 42 yard run.

Then think about what he showed as a KR last year with a 96yd TD and almost had another one. Not so much this year because Grant has been the main return man. Drake is a threat to go the distance at any time. But he also showed the ability to get the chunk yards that are there. He played with physicality as well. We might already have our #1 RB. 4 more games to get a better feel.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Forgot this play last year as well. Drake has a lot of special in him.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s in my psyche to be skeptical over a 1-game, outstanding performance. But in the case of Drake… behind our makeshift O-Line and against the THEN #1 run-Defense in the Broncos… I’ve got to make an exception. And it doesn’t stop there for me: his build is nice and we’ve seen what he’s done in college.

Many of us have been waiting for him to breakout, and now that he has, I think he’s got the confidence to keep it going. I think you’re right about Drake, Tim… and he’s just beginning to scratch the surface of what he’s capable of doing.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, right but then realize as a backup RB and return man for the first 1.5 seasons of his career, he has 6 TDs and a lot of big plays in limited opportunities. The odds say the more he touches the ball the more big plays he will make. The only question is can he handle that kind of workload. But as you saiid he has a nice build for a back, big legs which is where the power and speed comes from.

I’ve said before he reminds me of Ahman Green who also got off to a slow start then when the opportunity was there he ran with it. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One thing I’ll say about this. Ajayi was not a hammer RB, he ran out of shotgun most of the time and was a 1-2 cut runner. When he got to the 2nd level he ran through arm tackles by LBs and would punish DBs in the open field. He did not run people over. Ajayi’s best attribute is his balance and go forward mentality. I saw the same thing from Drake last week. The difference is Drake has a 5th gear.

I think Drake can be a feature back but that doesn’t mean we can’t add another back to help us when he needs a breather and for depth. If we re-sign Williams I’m all for it. To me he’s a situational back and mostly receiver as a 3rd down back and here and there as a rusher. But Drake is just as good as a receiver and his ceiling is higher. We need to add another RB who can run physical and also be a receiver. Perry is a solid 4th RB when needed.

All I know is Drake will be in the mix at RB in 2018. 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it will be interesting to see the type of O-Linemen we bring in to augment Drake’s skills.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t care about the types of OL we bring in, all I care about is block and give our playmakers a chance to make plays.

Another element of all of this is how badly Tannehill wants to get back and prove himself. Sometimes fans and media act like he can’t play but that is so inaccurate. He brings a lot to the table. Is he elite, no. So what, there are maybe 4-6 elite QBs in the NFL and they don’t always win.

If we are solid in the trenches we can be there in the final 4. I really believe that.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another guy to keep your eye on is DE Cameron Malveaux. The coaches like him and he might replace a guy like Fede next year if we don’t re-sign him. He’s another big DE on the cheap.

  20. It was 39 in parts of Florida yesterday. Even the weather likes the Pats.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The only way we beat the Pats is putting a lot of pressure on Brady and not making a lot of mistakes hurting ourselves. We’ll need to win the turnover battle as well.

    • I don’t care if we win the game as much as I’d like to see some signs of us going in the right direction with players we’ve got on the roster. And I’m not talking about guys like Timmons or anyone else who would be just a fill in the roster spot type player.

Want to see Harris step up a bit and show us why he was a first round pick. Would like to see Howard have another good game and continue to build on last week. Want to see Davis maybe show he could possibly be an answer at one of the guard positions on the line. Want to see Drake show he deserves to be in there as a starter by continuing to improve each week. Want to see Tunsil show he deserves to be our starting LT.

Things like this will give me some hope we’re moving in the right direction. We still need some players in key spots. We need another starter at LB and DE and at least one if not two players on the offensive line. So, we’re still not there yet but want to at least see some signs we have players in certain spots we don’t need to worry about.

  31. Mayfield may make it to Miami’s pick. He looked either hungover or high in that ESPN interview.

  32. Jimmy G isn’t exactly lighting it up in taking over for SF. Beathard is still the better qb. May need another season to pass out Garrafella but once he does he’ll leave him in the dust.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, isn’t Rosen thought to be a bit of a cocky asshole?

  34. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I watched Rosen a couple of times this year and I was blown away with his accuracy and he has an excellent arm. I don’t know if he is a cocky asshole or not like Tim says but he would not be the only QB in the pros who is

    • The problem arose from a comment he made when he said (paraphrase) football and college don’t go hand in hand……some players there don’t have any business being there because playing football is like a full time job and it’s hard enough for good students to do both and some of the players can’t do both.

He went on to say that he understood that the prospect of making it to the NFL and making the money was the only way out of poverty for a lot of those guys. He wasn’t saying what he said to be an ass. He was saying it because he has a good head on his shoulders and knows his fellow student athletes struggle with both studies and athletics and he also wasn’t happy because the school uses them for their athletic programs, especially football, but many of them are treated badly and have terrible living accommodations because they don’t have his means.

So, a lot of what he said, IMO, was taken out of context and people overreacted to it.

  35. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Even though he didn’t have as good of a season I still think Darnold is an excellent prospect. I think he is neck and neck with Rosen as the best QB in the draft

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you Google Josh Rosen character concerns you’ll find some stuff. But it might be more about being a young guy and not real bad stuff. Most scouts think his ability is top notch.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He went undrafted and has bounced around with a few teams for a reason. But yes he has played well this year. The Vikes lost this game as a team. The defense didn’t play up to their game either.

  41. Does Philly have more than one Bradham on defense? The guy is everywhere.

  42. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I watched some highlights and read some recaps on line. I think it’s fair to say that the 49s are pretty happy with Jimmy G and that he has played well in his 2 starts. I would be very surprised if Betheard sees the field in any capacity other than as a backup.

    • they got 3 offensive linemen back. makes a huge difference. Beathard was sacked 19x in 6 games

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There is a reason why they traded for him. I like Betheard too but I don’t see him as the starter there but time will tell

      • there’s a reason why we drafted Parker in the first. there’s a reason why we traded up to get Carroo.

      • maybe they wanted to keep Beathard on the sideline to learn as much as possible and groom him behind a starter but just wanted an upgrade at the starter position until Beathard was ready.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t see it that way. They don’t make that trade unless they see Jimmy G as a starter. 2-0 averaging over 300 yards in those 2 starts. It seems like he is off to a pretty good start. If I am betting man I would put money on Betheard not seeing the field that often. It is just how I see it.

      • I just don’t see Jimmy G as the guy who can get it done for your team long term. He’s good in the Pats system and that’s it. He’s not your franchise guy. Beathard can do everything you need of a quarterback and the one thing he’s got over others is his intelligence at the position is off the board. The unfortunate part for him is he didn’t have the full compliment of starters on the offensive line and his play suffered because of it and now Jimmy G is going to look like he’s so much better because he’s got the starters back and he’s playing with them.

We are looking like a “no man’s land”-“middle of the pack” team again this year, I think. Loved the Denver win, but after yesterday looks like it was the difference between a potential top 5 pick and a mid-teens pick. Once the game starts our hearts take over and we cheer for good things to happen… but I’d like our team to at least be in a position to have the “option” of going a new direction at QB (Rosen is an obvious favorite). Cleveland certainly goes QB, Giants probably need to… most of the others likely in the top 7 seem to be ok at QB (at least letting their rookies get another year under their belts).

With that said… I will not be able to resist cheering for a Monday night win over the Cheats.

Just for the fun of it… if all the teams with a worse record than us win out and we lose out, we’re still in play to get the 2nd overall pick of the 2018 Draft. Conversely, if we win out and most teams with a better record than us lose out, we’re still in it to pick in the mid-20s. And if we somehow miracle ourselves into the playoffs and win the Super Bowl, we’d obviously be picking @ R1P32.

Translation: there’s still plenty of football left to be played and we’re still not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Let’s get a win tonight and go from there.

      • D's avatar D says:

He was a guy i wanted us to draft as well, but i was wanting him more in a 3rd to 4th round, which i thought was possible he would fall to. I felt like he was about perfect for out system, then with Philbin, as we ran a quick pass, fast release kind of system, and watching his tape that year it was obvious he was a limited deep passer but an amazing short-intermediate. I wasn’t so much down on Tanny at that point as i wanted us to have a guy as a just in case. He’s a good QB, but the system has to be the right fit for him, so 9’er need to put effort to building around him.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Jimmy G. is a free agent, so the Niners have to figure out a fair contract for him. He’s going to be the starter, but he’s going to be a 27 YO QB with only 7 starts. I’m interested to see what his contract ends up looking like.

  64. D's avatar D says:

Commenting toward some of older posts above about Baker Mayfield.

I think he is a dynamic player (by that i mean makes things happen an can turn breakdowns into positive yardage gains), and deserving of the Heisman, aside from his off-field stuff, which i do feel should have affected him in the Heisman voting. I do actually think some of that off field stuff didaffect him, but the others were just not on the same level to be close enough for it to matte. I also think he benefitted, and they lost out, by the teams they were on, Mayfield being on a team headed for the championship, Barkley, and Jackson were not. He also had an advantage, over the guy who to me was closest competitively, because he is a QB.

Now as to what i think of him as a draft candidate, specifically for the position of QB. I think he has the competitive nature ya want in any athlete, however i see more Johnny Manziel than Carson Wentz or even Jared Goff. Id be wary of him and his QB ability transferring to the NFL. Someone certainly will take a 1st round stab at him, so i think the 3rd round projection is probably off, even though on a personal level i completely agree that 2nd or 3rd would be where id rather select him,to play it safe with my first round pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

To tack on to these comments, i think that Luke Faulk is a much better candidate for us, were we to draft a QB in the second or maybe even 3rd. I should get a better look at him in the Senior Bowl this year. I also wouldnt shy away from players like Thorston from Northwestern, in the same round range as Faulk, or even players like Will Grier at WVU, and/or Drew Lock, Mssouri, Stidham, Auburn, or Riley Ferguson, Memphis as players who have a little more development needed but have a lot of the skills you want to see at least in abundant raw form, when selecting a potential starter.

Some of the games turned our way yesterday as far as draft position. We are at #12 and will stay that with a loss, but a number of teams with one more win got another one. We win and will be at #14.

Wentz tore his ACL? Fuck! I won my FF playoff game with him and wondered why Foles was in. So now I go with Goff. I lost Rodgers, replaced him with Goff and rolled with Wentz who was already my backup. I also lost Kamara to a concussion but was still able to overcome just 2 pts from him. I’ll be playing the next round with yet another group of players and Drake might possibly replace Kamara. This isn’t going to be easy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I lost Kamara on one team, and Wentz on another. My playoffs start this week, so I’ll have to sub either Cousins or Trubisky for Wentz, and in the other league Kenyan Drake or Jordan Howard for Kamara if he can’t go next week

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I lost with Wentz in my playoff game unless Drake outscores Brady by 20 points….least you are still are in there. And fantasy aside, imagine if you were an Eagles fan. This was looking like the magical year for them when everything just came up right.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah it sucks for the league all these players going down.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Doesn’t Brady get 20 points for just showing up against the Dolphins. I think it’s in the rules

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ken — Goodell don’t rule fantasy leagues….least not yet. If anything my hopes tonight hinge on he doesn’t rule what our DL does either, not that would hope for that. 🙂

MRI showed that Eagles’ QB and NFL MVP candidate Carson Wentz did tear his ACL. Wentz is our for season.

He is one of my man crushes

      • D's avatar D says:

I like him for us. He is probably tied for second out of the TE class as best fits for us. I like Hurst out of South Carolina best, Fumagali and Gesicki on pretty even levels just behind him, probably Schultz right after him. There are a few other guys like Goedert, and Williams that i also like but i see them more pure receiving types and i think for our team to be successful we really need a solid hybrid blocking/receiving TE, and not one that leans havily towards one side or the other. TE should be a feature in our system but they will have to block to make the play calls work right.

  70. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Totally agree with D’s analysis of Mayfield

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have Drake tonight and my opponent has Brady, but I have a 22 point lead, so hopefully the Dolphins D can hold Brady to a less than outrageous evening, and Drake can give me a little something.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Go Drake!

    • D's avatar D says:

Id like your chances with that lead and Drake still to go. Id guess you are looking like a 32 point favorite right now, so if we can keep Brady from going absolutely off, you could have a good chance of winning. Brady is 7-8 against us playing in Miami, so that also favors you.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Man was I happy to pick up Drake after the trade — thinking being a fan of the team gave me the inside FF edge. But then then was laughing at the guy who is going to beat me when he played Rod Smith (160 yards and two scores) and the Cowboys D….so guess it works both ways.

  72. D's avatar D says:

I dont think any of the games that happened this week really turned out much different than i expected, when i said we could/would wind up 8th overall finishing the season out with 2 more wins (that was before Denver and Denver was one of my projected wins). If we lose the rest of them that we should (i think we beat Buffalo once out of the 2 times left we play them, but lose the rest) we should still finish roughly 8-10th, and prime for a good trade back scenario, or stay put and take a top OL/DE/CB/WR/LB, etc. KC game, however is starting to look winnable, and with Buffalo being up and down we could sweet them, that would put more in the 14-16th range, and really out of any lucrative trade back, and also out of the range of most the top players at any of those positions, except maybe OG.

If we dont tank for draft position, we need to push ourselves to win all the rest of our games, and most importantly this one tonight. I think an 8-8 finish is going to keep us one game out of the playoffs, and really pissy about the year, even more so than losing out or finishing 6-10 where at least we have a better draft scenario. Also, if we dont win tonight, the Pats have cinched the AFC East, and a playoff berth. We need to make sure that drags out as long as possible.

  73. D's avatar D says:

Frank Ragnow is a good OC candidate, i doubt though you we get to see him in any of the drills or the game. He is sill getting over a high ankle sprain, and i doubt he is going to be ready by then. I wouldn’t doubt he is there for the interviews, etc. and might even go though some of the light stuff just to show that his ankle is mending well.

  74. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The scuffle between the jags and hawks yesterday may have hurt the seahawks, Two DL were ejected and may face a one game suspension

The OL Linder of the jags was to blame for this as he got bulled in a victory formation by Seattle DL, the game wasn’t over, Seattle was trying to force a fumble and rightfully so.
Linder stepped on the DL initiating the fight in retaliation. as usual the zebras got it wrong.

and who do they play next? the Rams for what may be the western crown without their starting DL.

I saw the Center take a shot to the knees and tackled when he tried to step over the defender.
    ___________________________________________

Saw it on NFL Channel, Seattle was lined up aggressively, Linder should have known it was coming, he was trying to swipe the ball when it was hiked he wasn’t going for anyones knees. they’re trying to get a turnover, the game isn’t over until it’s over, the way Linder stepped over him was disrespectful as the NFLChannel crew pointed out, not just my opinion.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think you’re wrong Rob. The game IS over, that’s bullshit to pull that kind of thing in victory formation to begin with. It’s bad sportsmanship, period.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m just telling you what i saw on a sports channel, Seattle had their ears pinned back so Jax should have been aware, I don’t care who’s in Victory formation you should play all 60 minutes of a game IMO.

Dr. James Andrews told @mortreport that torn ACLs can and should be 9-12 month recoveries, which means there are no assurances Carson Wentz is ready for start of 2018 season.

Dr. Andrews said he’s encountered too many football players w/ torn ACLs who have unrealistic expectation, citing Adrian Peterson’s remarkable recovery from ACL/MCL repair in Dec ’12 to play by Sept ’13. Dr. Andrews reminded Peterson was genetically unique. Exception to rule

They’re competitive, but I think they may fall short of the playoffs. As far as I’m concerned, they’re watchable again, and I’ll take that. They play team ball, and it’s fun to watch.

If the Pats are going to double Landry in key situations we need others to really step up and make them pay. Belichick has made it no secret they do that.

The best thing we can do is establish a solid ground game lead by Drake to balance our attack so we’re tougher to defend.

On defense we have to pressure Brady like we did last time but if the coverage leaks too much like it did last time he’ll still beat us and put up points. We have to defend the run better than we did last time as well.
