The Wedge Scouting Report: Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

What a miserable end to the Dolphins season!  Actually what a miserable season.  Hmmm…Let’s see if I can line up Buffalo in my sights….

Wedgeand Cannon

Ehhh…Whats the point?  It’s already a dump!  There is nothing this astro cannon can do that they can’t do to themselves or haven’t done to themselves…

May as well start thinking about the NFL draft and get ready for 2018.  And let’s start with the top – let’s start with the Heisman Trophy winner, Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield1

Okay, settle down Tannehill lovers.  I’m just looking at all options.  Besides….we never draft the guys I look at anyway…so this is probably a blessing.

Mayfield2

The Positives:  If you don’t know about Mayfield by now – WAKE UP.  There is a reason he won the the Heisman Trophy.  He’s been dominating College Football this year and has Oklahoma competing for a National Championship (at the time this is written).

Just look at his numbers.  Over 14,000 yards in four years (including his first year at Texas Tech), 129 Touchdowns and only 29 interceptions with a career passer rating of 176.00.  Mayfield had 40 touchdowns in 2016 and 41 in 2017.  Mayfield is probably the best Oklahoma QB since Sam Bradford and some experts since he is a better pro prospect.

He is 8th on NCAA all time passing yards and 6th in touchdowns.  His 2017 QB rating is first in NCAA history surpassing his 2016 QB rating which is 2nd all-time.

We can go on forever about his stats – they are impressive.  But beyond the numbers, Mayfield is confident and competitive and loved by his teammates.

OU VS TULANE

Weaknesses: Okay…I know he’s smallish.  He’s listed at 6’1 and might be even smaller. Although he has been durable at Oklahoma, some question whether at that size he can be that durable in the pros.

He’s not a great athlete either.  He’s not a bad one – he’s just not going to make heads turn if/when he runs the 40 at the combine.

Oh – and then there is the attitude.  He’s a crotch grabber…I guess Mayfield comes off a bit cocky.  I’ve even seen him compared to Johnny Manziel. YUK!

Mayfiled3

The Alien Dust:  He’s a gamble.  What front office will take that gamble?  There are many great college quarterbacks that don’t produce in the NFL.  Mayfield is smallish and has that personality that gets under some human’s skin.  But not this alien.

I actually love him.  I think h has a chance of being a great NFL QB.  His consistency in college should not be ignored.  He’s a natural passer with great pocket presence and does a great job of improving when a play breaks down.

That confidence doesn’t bother me.  This alien thinks a lot of humans may regret passing on Mayfie;ld.  Currently I’m hearing he is the 4th ranked QB behind Rosen, Darnold and Allen – but this is a weird draft, and a QB like Mayfield of Jackson (Louisville) may not get selected as high as the other quarterbacks – but still have a better career.  The QB prospect analysis always has had inconsistent results.

MayfiledCannon

But the inability to predict success won’t stop this alien from comparing Mayfield to an alien weapon of destruction.  Mayfield is the lethal Astro Cannon!

You can see his highlights here

He’s really a Drew Bree’s clone in a lot of ways. Emotional leader, football smart, good athlete and experienced.

He is a better athlete than Manziel but his game is a lot like Manziel

I don’t agree with you about his arm strength at all Ken

He looks like he can make any throw and most of what I hear from scouts is pretty positive about his arm strength

It may not be Joe Flacco but I think it’s oorblabky on par with many nfl qbs like Brees

Some in the media have said they think Mayfield will be a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. I reached out to some team sources, and they said that could be possible given the way quarterbacks rise. Mayfield is undersized for the NFL with just average arm strength, however. He can have issues reading defenses, too. One big area of improvement for Mayfield is his footwork as he gets happy feet in the pocket. One college scouting director told me that Mayfield’s feet are terrible. In speaking to multiple teams, they had second-day grades on Mayfield, but that doesn’t mean he won’t go in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

No defensive player contributed in a game where 80 points were scored. Lol Entertaining game to watch though.

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL

  36. Smith is a playmaker on defense. Great range with his speed, smart player and great tackler

  37. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I want to see if linebacker Dorian O’Daniel can cover a TE

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
I have no clue what sort of player he is. This is the only time I’ve seen him play. He definitely picked it up in the second half and made some nice plays. Georgia’s whole team did. He looks kinda small. Is he NFL MLB size?

  39. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Roquan Smith has 0 INTs and 3 PDs in 33 career starts. That screams 2-down LB if I’ve ever seen it. You don’t take 2-down LBs in the 1st Round. This guy is the next Benardrick McKinney/Reggie Ragland… only McKinney had 7 PDs and Ragland had 1 INT and 10 PDs in college… and Roquan is 15 pounds lighter than BOTH McKinney and Ragland were in college.

Now if Roquan’s game was getting the QB, that would be a little different… but Roquan has a mere 5.5 career sacks. What’s more, he’s not even in the top-20 for total tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, fumbles recovered, or INTs.

Like most of the rest of y’all, I think Roquan is EXTREMELY over-rated. I’d consider converting him to S at his size and speed, but he’s got no ball skills! PASS on him.

  40. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Alright back to work tomorrow so I am turning in early

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure college production means that much anymore. Look at the matchups. Do these prospects translate to the NFL? Target NFL prospects, not college wonders.

    • Smith is a bona fide NFL prospect. You want a guy who has range and can tackle at LB. He’s taking on players who are bigger than him running with the ball and has no difficulty taking them down and he doesn’t move. Perfect tackling technique.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Exactly Tim. It’s about projection of their skills at the next level and not their college stats or achievements. With that I am out. Peace

Without speculating too much on some older players, UDFAs, maybe a trade, bottom depth or some players off of injury.

These are players I expect to be on the team competing for the 2018 season.

    Offense:
OL Tunsil, Pouncey, Davis, Larsen, Asiata, Smith
    TE Gray
    WR Stills, Parker, Grant
    QB Tannehill
    RB Drake

    Defense:
DL Suh, Wake, Branch, Harris, Phillips, Godchaux, Taylor, Malveaux
    LB Alonso, McMillan, Anthony, Allen
DB Howard, Tankersley, McCain, Lippett, Jones, McDonald

    Special Teams:
    K Parkey

That’s 31 players to start with based on status and contract. There will be that other 30 players already in the house competing for spots, and then 29 new additions = 53 and PS. So much has to happen before we know what this team looks like in 2018.

There is a core to build on. Laugh all you want. There are some good players here. 🙂

    • I think one of the major problems with this team is they look at this the same way and then they just say ” all we need to do is fill in some holes and we’re set” and we see the results.

They need to be in a team-building mode right now and for the next three years at least. They need to bring in talent thru the draft and only sign a few key free agents who can help them out not only immediately but for the long-term rather than just be short-term, stop-gap type players.

They haven’t been doing that. Like I said, I want to see what happens in free agency and the draft and if there’s any changes on the coaching staff and then we’ll have a better idea what kind of mentality they have about how they think things should be done.

  49. Someone made a point on a social media site that Gase kind of got lucky that Foster went down and Gase was forced to use Ajayi because if that didn’t happen we probably would have never seen Ajayi and it’s possible this team doesn’t win 10 games last season.

Agree or disagree? I know some will give me hell for this but I actually agree with this. Gase got lucky. There was no genius behind what he did last season. So, what are we looking at here?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      I agree with this, absolutely.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      No I don’t agree

That theory depends on the belief that Gase thought a 30 something Foster with a history of injuries would play 16 games

      I doubt he believed that

He set Ajayi as the 2 on the depth chart and left him off plane in game 1 only to elevate him to the starter when Foster went down

I don’t think it was luck that Ajayi was the starter

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Without looking, tell me how many carries, and even total touches Ajayi has with Philadelphia this season? I get the impression people think Ajayi has had like 200 carries and close to 1000 yards with Philly

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It seems like they might re-sign James though – or at least that is the plan

Most of the cuts were expected, except they might leave Pouncey out

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope that’s the plan. I don’t see why we should just jettison James, he played well for us for quite some time. I think we should re-sign him to long deal. We don’t need to add another need on the O-line

  54. D's avatar D says:

This is my think with Mayfield. He is a gamer, he has a lot of the Deshaun Watson like stuff in him, making things happen when things seem to be breaking down, doing what he needs to extend a play, etc. He has a competative fire to him that you just cannot find in all players.

Unlike Watson though, he isnt just about letting his play speak for him. Watson is more humble and though i think both have some player characteristics that draw people to follow their lead, i think Watson makes people want to follow him but how he holds himself. I dont see that characteristic in Mayfield and in fact im afraid that the grandiose personality traits he shows might devour the rest of the positive leadership characteristics he has. People will tired of dealing withhim as a teammate if he continues as he is headed currently.

The obvious limitations is his height, taller than Brees and Wilson, but only marginally. I say this because those two are examples of being able to overcome it, but its like a rucksack of rocks, you can still walk around with it on ya,but you have to have exceptional character to day in and day out overcome that extra baggage. His arm strenth is pretty decent, i wouldn’t say great, but decent. An offense would definitely have to be tailored to fit him, as part of his strengths is an unorthodox style.

All in all, ill stick with a previous evaluation of him, not someone id take as a first choice, not someone id take in a round im sure someone will select him in, but someone that i would take if the value was there. Im not going to risk big with this guy, he has too much “fail to get out of his own way” for me to think he has starter written all over him, but he does warrant some consideration because of the gamer intangibles he brings. Maybe the rest comes with maturity, but there have been too many recent examples of others who have failed to reach maturity to hold your breath on that.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This is exactly my take on Mayfield.
He is not as big of an A-hole as Manziel, more the level of Cam Newton, without the style and transcendent talent to make up for it.

It’s hard to overlook the sheer magnificence of his level of production, but as much as half of that won’t translate to the NFL … either because it was system stuff or trickeration or against inferior talent.

If he had a rocket arm, which he definitely does not, then maybe … but why would you risk your season on him as your starter? I would not and he is too wild to be a back-up.

    —————
Agree and disagree. There is always a degree of luck with every great coaching job. Was Bellichek lucky Bledsoe got hurt or is he a great coach? The answer is yes to both. We won 10 games last year. Tannehill was playing his best ball last year the coach had something to do with it. Yes we only won 6 this year and yes the coach had something to do with that too.

  58. So Ajayi was lucky Foster got hurt and we would have just as successful with Foster running the ball.

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

Do you think Gase wants a 1 back offense?

    • I can’t tell what he wants. There’s college teams with better offensive schemes than this team

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s made it clear that he doesn’t, and every stop he had in the NFL, he had multiple backs. Ajayi wasn’t happy with the amount of carries he was getting as the feature back, he would have flipped his shit if he had to split carries. Now in Philly, he has no choice whatsoever, because he’s just a little fish in a big pond. Saying we don’t win because of Tannehill is just a blinded, ignorant statement Lou.

      • It’s not ignorant. You just refuse to want to see it. He had a run game that produced 13 rushing tds last yr. We didn’t win games because of his pedestrian 16 td passes

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        it was 19 TD’s but a pointless discussion really . . .

  60. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure leaving him off the trip in game 1 and moving him to 2 in the depth chart by game 2 means that’s gase valued Ajayi and was trying to get him on board with his vision

I think that theory is really a stretch.

Drake was on the roster too. If gase didn’t know what he had in Ajayi but for an injury wouldn’t he have went from Foster to Drake after Ajayi and him already butted heads to start the season. It’s kind of a silly theory given that Ajayi started game 5 if 2016 and fosters game 4 theory and the Dolphins has other options

I’m not sure why people are inclined to manufacture reasons to criticize Gase. I think there are reasons in front of us that aren’t so attenuated like the “gase was lucky Foster, a theory something RB with a history of injuries, was hurt last year”.

Also the notion that Ajayi was the sole reason we won 10 games last year needs to stop. It’s simplistic. And when you contrast it to the predictions that we would struggle with a harder schedule, we lost our starting qb in preseason and how our OL digressed there should be a lot of obvious other reasons we are a 6 win team in 17 and a 10 win team in ‘16

    • If Foster was the back for most of the season the season doesn’t happen. Gase fell into shit

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That is a silly theory. I’m not sure why its not sinking in with you.

You don’t know if Gase benches Foster by mid season.

You do know Drake and williams were behind Ajayi which demonstrates that the coaches had him higher on the depth chart and higher than a couple of guys that the coaches value

Looking up the stats I can see myself that Ajayi had 18 carries in games 2, 3 and 4 so it was obvious the coaches were working him in to the gameplan in 16

Its reasonable to expect that Foster wasn’t going to play 16 games given his age and his injury history. Actually its reasonable to expect that of any player in the NFL and this theory is not applicable to anyone when it comes down to it – but for Foster and aging vet on the verge of retirement, its even less believable

That theory is evidence of people being desperate to criticize coaches and come up with something no one else has said before. The reality is the reason no one is saying it is because its far fetched

Foster was not some kind of magic top hat causing Ajayi to disappear unless he was injured. The coaches knew who ajayi was and they still know who he is. He was the next man up if Foster goes down – which happens all the time in the NFL. why are we criticzing the coaches for having good backups exactly?

I’m more likely to criticize the coaches for trading him than the fact that he only played last year out of dumb luck. That wasn’t luck – he was a good pick and a valuable player. I still don’t like the trade even given Drake’s success but this argument is still out of left field for my taste

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gase sucks, Tannehill sucks, because Lou says so. End of story, since professorloumiamidolphinsblog states it. professorlouphiladelphiaeaglesblog seems to make more sense. Think about it

On things we can build off of

After barely touching the ball for the first 6 weeks Drake finished the season with 8824 yards. I would like to see is bring in another RB to help carry the load but those are very good numbers for 10 games – and he didn’t start for a few of those games

  64. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

So Drake broke the single season rushing record?

  65. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Couldn’t catch the Bills game, but just reading that Cutler was pulled after the first series. Know it is old news for you guys by now — but what was up with that? Unless he was injured, gotta think that means no reason to talk about Cutler in any way as far as the future goes.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Drake will probably shatter the record books at that pace. WOW!

  67. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Naples, yeah, Andrews was a non factor. That may have been GA’s game plan to take eliminate him as a go to guy for Mayfield. I saw him double a few times. That may be why GA struggled defending the run/jet sweep in the first half. It did bother me though that every time I saw Andrews he was lined up outside and not much in line to block.

  68. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Stanger, yeah, Gase wanted to see Fales with the one’s in this game. It just happened much sooner than anyone thought.

Maybe if we nailed our 1st 4 picks, I would be ok with it with our last pick in the 4th. I mean, it would be nice to have a fearless, self motivating gamer to come off the bench as your #2.

Stanger, after going 3 and out on the first series with an almost Cutler INT, Gase must havesaid F-it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was looking at it from Gase’s standpoint, but that is possible. Once Cutler took a snap they couldn’t take his game check away. Maybe he decided he’d prefer never taking another hit.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Drake definitely proved he’s got more than enough talent to be the main back, even in a 3 back situation. What he hasn’t proven yet, through no fault of his own, whether he can handle 16 games of getting 15-20 touches a game

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

Cutler threw a hideous pass that should have been intercepted, but the Bills DB dropped it. I think Gase saw enough. lol I mean, it was only his 2nd pass, and it could have been a pick 6

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But you don’t pull your starter after one bad pass early, especially if Fales is your back-up. But that assumes you are interested in winning…..

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Think of it from this perspective. He probably only planned to give Cutler a couple of series, but after that awful pass, he decided to cut it back to just one series.

Ajayi definitely helped us last year, but we also succeeded even when he wasn’t helping us. He had the three 200 yard games, and that’s a pretty remarkable feat, but he only had one 100 yard game outside of that. The stretch of games we went on he had 2, 200 yard games early in that stretch, and then one very late, and all the games in the middle we won in spite of him a lot as he had several games he averaged below 3 yards per carry. Also people are so quick to give him credit for it, but they revile the OL, which had to have been producing the opportunities for him to get those yards.

The reason we were winning then was because we played complimentary football, we were helping each other out, ST’s were also really good that year. We simply played as a team better and part of that was being led by the same guy who we always looked to as our leader, instead of having to insert a new guy into that role and try to make 4 years happen in one. For all i may point out about Tanny’s +’s or -‘s, i pretty much felt like we were headed for a 8-8, 7-9 at best season the minute he went down, because even if we had good Cutler most games, the chemistry was just not going to be there. I got overly excited by preseason with Cutler and dared to dream, but it came back down to reality pretty quickly.

I just don’t understand how that gets lost. I said before….. when he went out in the AZ game, the looks on the faces on the sideline said it all…..
So when he comes back and goes down again……..

    • D's avatar D says:

Well one person was auditioning for a job next year, the other one either already knows he has one or he already knows he doesn’t, so it wouldn’t do any good to play him that last game no matter what that decision is.

If he had a rocket arm, which he definitely does not, then maybe … but why would you risk your season on him as your starter? I would not and he is too wild to be a back-up.
    ————————————–
Yeah he isnt a guy you take with the idea of you shooting for a backup role, or really even a “settle on him as the backup if he doesnt work out as a starter” thats just not who he is. This is a guy you commit to as a starter and you risk it our you pass on him. Id also say you would start him right off ideally, he is the type guy i think could respond to that kind of situation, but i also think he isnt good enough to do that and has a lot to learn and a good bit of maturity to really warrant being tapped as your guy. Again, if he is floating around later in the draft and we still haven’t taken a QB, i roll the dice i’m just not sacrificing a pick we could have much better value with, to take him because another team might reach to take him.

  80. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So Cutler was talking post-game, just not to reporters.

  81. D's avatar D says:

Mike i dont think it was anything like that, at that point in the year throwing and errant pass is a “oh well”. He also wouldn’t have put Fales as a replacement in a benching move. He didnt bench him all season so why would that game, a game that did not count make him finally do it. Fales needed an evaluation, and that’s what they got. It means Moore stands a good chance of not returning, or at the very least they are looking to move on, because they evaluated a potential replacement for him. They also got to see if they would need to invest stronger in a backup replacement, because if they want to move on from Moore and Fales isnt going to be that guy, then they got to get prepped up for FA or draft to take a guy that can do it.

he doesn’t ooze it, but he has an air about him that i think commands a good bit. He remains positive in adverse situations and that keeps you in games sometimes, it lets you be able to turn the tide, even if he isnt carrying the team, it definitely feels like he helps others rally around the team and find an extra gear.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

And he takes big hits and gets up, runs without fear for important first downs, and doesn’t call out his teammates on camera. When you’re a white guy that the Bennett brothers like, you know you aren’t racist and you have a ton of street cred.

BTW i just saw that Taven Bryan from UF declared for the draft. That dude is going to be a beast, he really came on this last year and he just is brutish strong, blows people back off the line. He is probably suited best for 3-4 DE, but he could play as a 4-3 DE, or even 4-3 DT, maybe a hybrid role. Most people i have heard make comparisons of him its to JJ Watt because of the motor and strength. If we decide to move on from Phillips because we feel he didnt make the necessary progress this year, id be all over taking Bryan as his replacement. We would have exactly the opposite as far as motor, effort and conditioning out of him than we do Phillips as he is a gym rat. Another guy out of Ole Miss, Breeland Speaks is another guy to look at for similar role, can slide out and play DE, but can also be a pass rush specialist from the DT position.

Have you ever just had “one of those days”?
To me, that was the 2017 season for the Dolphins. It was like
We overslept, missed breakfast, cut ourselves shaving, had a flat tire when we went out to get in the car so our coffee got cold, Triple A got lost and then they didn’t have our tire size, and when we finally hit the highway, we got rear-ended on the way to work by an illegal immigrant with no insurance.

When we finally made it to work, the big boss had moved our office to the basement and canceled our vaca till next year. Our best account ditched us for a $30 theatre ticket, and the company cut our territory in half and hired a young sexy chick to compete with us on volume. We forgot our lunch and had to settle for a stale sandwich from the vending machine, had to walk in sleet to a crummy pub for a $25 lunch and drank 3 martinis we were so pissed off.

Got back to work, late again and feisty from the cheap gin, argued with co-workers, dropped our phone and cracked the screen, crashed our database and lost our spreadsheet, got a moldy Uber home with Roseanne Barr driving and found out from our wife when we got there that it was our night to host Senior Ladies Yoga, our internet was down, our best friend moved to Oregon, a meth-head rock-star rented the apartment across from our daughter’s, and a family of nine ISIS sympathizers from Yemen moved in next door. (That would be the Buffalo Bills; the rest you can figure out.)

Draftek has immediately installed Taven Bryan as the 4th rated 5 technique DL with a draft number of 94, which means we could take him with our early 4th and still get the 3 guys we need first (OG, TE, RB).

    Good call D.

    Naples,
Its kind of like the scene in Office Space where the guy is waiting in trafic and frustrated and finally sees a break in the line that is moving only to find as soon as he gets over there, that line has now stopped and the one he was in is now moving. Thats kind of how our season went, we would have brief moments where it looked like we might be jumping into that fast lane finally just to be reminded, “Sorry, the fast lane is for winners.”

I was pretty impressed with Jonathan Ledbetter last night for UGA. I expected him to declare for the draft and be a mid round selection, or maybe even rise a little on the draft boards with a good combine, 3rd round maybe. I thought he would declare IF they won the championship, but looks like he is also going to return for his senior year.

  91. D's avatar D says:

Wyoming should like Bryan as well, he’s a Wyoming native and developed most of his musculature working a farm/range out there. His nickname at UF was the Wyoming Wildman. He works out with 600lbs on squats and and benches over 500. I saw a video once of him benching 450 multiple reps. He hasnt been playing football his whole life so he kinda had to mature into playing well but this last year he was dominant, got better every game and was one of the few brights spots for us for the year.
