The Wedge Scouting Report: Nick Chubb, Georgia

Ahhh…there is nothing I like more than rolling over the remaining lifeforms after planetary conquest.  The feeling of dominance as you roll over their squishy bodies – smells like….victory!

IDL TIFF file

I imagine its what it feels like to be a dominating running back.   I saw some old videos of Herschel Walker and he must have felt the squishing bodies of the defenders underneath him.

Georgia has had some good running backs:  Walker, Todd Gurley and now Nick Chubb.

NickChubb4

The Positives:  Nick Chubb has been very productive at Georgia.  As a freshman no one expected much from him.  But when Todd Gurley went down with an unfortunate injury  Chubb picked up the slack – rushing for over 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns.  For his career Chubb ran for 4,599 yards and 42 Touchdowns.

Chubb is listed at 5-10, 225 pounds.  He is a downhill powerful runner who fights for every inch.  He’s a fun runner to watch – breaking tackles and using his body to overpower defenders.

Chubb is a decisive runner – he hits the hole fast and has also proven to be elusive in the open field.  He had plenty of long rushing touchdowns in his career at Georgia.

NickChubb3

The Negatives:  Chubb suffered an ACL injury in his sophomore season.  He missed seven games that year.  But Chubb bounced back strongly in his junior season and had a third 1000 yard season in his senior season (2017).

That said, Chubb’s freshman year stands out as his most productive.  The medical evaluation at the combine might hurt his draft stock in the same way it hurt Jay Ajayi.

He’s not a great asset in the passing game only catching 3 passes in 2017 and 5 in 2017.

Nick Chubb7

The Alien Dust:  One of my favorite running backs to watch run…Boom Boom and then he breaks a big run.  If you enjoyed watching Ajayi run, you will probably like watching Chubb.

I think he can be a productive runner in any NFL tandem and a great short yardage back.  I would love to see Chubb paired with Drake for a powerful rushing attack in Miami.  Not sure if Miami feel like they can work with him in the passing game though.

He won’t be drafted too high.  He’s probably a day 3 pick.  At best he is a 3rd rounder.

NickChubb2

This terrific prospect reminds me of the lunar flattener I love using to crush the remaining lifeforms on a planet.  So that’s his weapon of destruction – an obvious fit.  Lookout defenders!

Good write up, Piggy. I was under the impression that Chubb was a higher rated RB.

Was a tiny bit better than KC Tenn game. I found that one very boring .. mind you i had more passion for Jags to win .. did not care either way with KC TEnn

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not a great game but I don’t mind a defensive game from time to time. There was still drama to the end.

  18. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I want us to draft Chubb just for his name. Every time they announce him I can say we have a Chubb

  19. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Man, where would we be if we had taken Brees over Culpepper? SMH

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Or Jamar Fletcher. We lost out on Brees twice.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That scenario is a different one altogether. How about Aaron Rodgers over Ronnie Brown? Lots of teams fucked that one up.

I heard Brian Billick on with Francesa during the season and he said the book on Rodgers was he might lack athletic ability at the next level. He then said well a lot of people got that one very wrong. LOL

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Wasn’t different we passed on him 2 times

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure we were going to land Brees even if we targeted him. He really liked his visit with the Saints and felt that was where he belonged. Meaning we might have lost out on him even if we didn’t pass because of his shoulder injury. That would have been even worse.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s add some studs to the OL, a TE, a physical RB, an impact defensive player somewhere and let’s get back to the playoffs. Yeah that’s the ticket!!

  21. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Yes by the end of tenn KC it got interesting to wwtch

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, what I meant with the Jamar Fletcher post was there would be no choice for Brees, we could have simply drafted him and he’s ours, no bidding wars.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Right we passed on him twice.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know, I was talking about different scenarios – draft vs. FA.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I just remember tearing off my Marino jersey in disgust when they announced the Fletcher pick. I had a similar reaction when we announced we were signing Culpepper instead of Brees although I didn’t have a Marino jersey anymore

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lot’s of teams got Brees and Rodgers very wrong. Both are going to the HOF.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, Wannstedt liked to use high draft picks on STs LBs and nickel corners. LOL

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, what prospects do you like in this draft for us at #11?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am big on Roquan Smith LB from Georgia and Quentin Nelson at OG. We may be able to move down a little to get him

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

he good thing about LB and OG is that traditionally aren’t high picks

so we may be able to get very good talent a little later

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That could be scary though as I believe Naples pointed out CIN is in the market for guards too and they pick #12. If I’m a GM and have him high on my board where BPA and need are a good match, and he’s there at #11, I’m not fucking around with a few spots for an extra 3rd or 4th rd pick, I’m taking him.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree if you really want somebody don’t trade around just draft him

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Teams could also try to jump us for him. Some draft guys have said Nelson could go top 10 at least at this time. Too early for a definitive top 15, but I think when it’s all said and done, Nelson will be in the top 15.

  26. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 11: Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia (B+)
Round 2 Pick 11: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame (A)
Round 3 Pick 11: Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 11: Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia (A)
Round 4 Pick 32: Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin (A)
Round 6 Pick 11: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 7 Pick 7: Joe Ostman, DE, Central Michigan (A)
Round 7 Pick 11: Jordan Whitehead, FS, Pittsburgh (A)

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not saying it’s going to go down like this, but for many reasons, this would be the best scenario on the OL both draft and cap wise. Good investment value for years to come. Pouncey is the only question long-term. Of course the performance has to be there, I’m not just going by names. They earned it and showed promise as the best 5.
    LT Tunsil
    LG Nelson
    C Pouncey
    RG Asiata
    RT Davis

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I’m not sure how Asiata earned anything, and the only promise he showed was as a benchwarmer. I would assume Larsen would start at RG. Davis should be a backup, and he should probably play guard because he struggles at tackle. They should do what they need to bring back James.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Every time I say this I get the same response. LOL

Asiata was red-shirted all year on the 53 man. He might be one of those guys who needs better conditioning and to improve his technique. He was a 5th rd rookie. We invested in him. Of course if he doesn’t perform he won’t be the RG. I said this would be the best scenario if he and others panned out. 🙂

  29. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I agree we need to pay James!

Plugging in 3 new starters on the OL doesn’t sound like a good plan to me?

Why do we feel the need to replace or push Drake? The guy has shown us he’s a difference maker. I don’t get it. Can anyone already on the team ever be praised?

I see a player on the rise. Yes let’s make RB a priority too. Oy!
    ———–
Nobody is trying to replace or push Drake, we simply need another RB on the roster… preferably a short-yardage bruiser with hands. Nearly every pundit, analyst, draftnik, prognosticator, and otherwise have us drafting a RB at some point this year on day 3.

I wanted Rashaad Penny when nobody heard of him and when he was projected to go in the 6th round. Well, the whole world knows who he is now and he’ll be going in the 2nd round… we do NOT need a RB in the 2nd round.

Royce Freeman would be NICE in the 4th round: 5’11”, 238, 4.54, and he’s got hands. I just fear his stock will rise into the day 2 range after he kills the Combine. And if Bo Scarbrough (6’1″, 232, 4.59) declares after the Alabama-Georgia Championship game, he’d be a nice option as well. Bo’s projected to go in the 5th round due to a history of injuries dating back to high school, but he appears to be fine now.

Again, nobody is trying to replace/push Drake… we’re just trying to round out the RB stable that Gase supposedly values so highly. Gase says he doesn’t want to go with a featured back, though his actions have spoken louder than his words over the last 2 seasons. We’ll see!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“we simply need another RB on the roster… preferably a short-yardage bruiser with hands.

Many of us have said this many times but I thought you made it seem like we have to draft some RB to be the guy, maybe I read you wrong. Drake has a ton of upside. He’ll be 24 in a few weeks with two years experience and a taste of what it’s like to be the #1. I think he has big time potential. Scary actually. He might be the key to our offense. The guy breaks a nice run every week if not two. He is like Kamara. I see good stuff ahead,

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m TOTALLY with ya on Drake. I keep saying that if we fix our O-Line properly, he’s got the potential to go over 1,500 yards (if used as a featured back, of course). He’s going to be NICE.

You read me wrong because the article was about Rashaad Penny, whom I’ve got a HUGE man crush on. I wasn’t trying to say that we need to draft him, because we don’t. I just found the article to be intriguing about my DUDE! He’s rising on draft boards EVERYWHERE! 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        All good. 🙂

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s tough to win in this league. You think you got it and then you could lose it, but you hang on. Really good game.

Round 6 Pick 11: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 7 Pick 7: Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech (C)

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

Question for ya: if Saquon lasts to R1P11 (which is HIGHLY doubtful), do ya draft him?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If he’s the BPA on the board, yes. You can fill needs later in the draft. Top talents shall not be passed on. 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Drake and Barkley would be insane. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve gotta agree. I’d actually have problems making up my mind on this (for one, I’d be blindsided that he fell to us and would want to know why), but at the end of the day,we’d be foolish to pass on him if we’ve vetted him properly.

We’d still be tasked with fixing the O-Line, and hopefully we could do that between the 2nd-4th rounds.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Should have a great trade offer about then?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

THAT is my other thought. We might get offered a blockbuster deal to trade the pick to a team that REALLY, REALLY wants/needs him.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I don’t think Barkley gets past CLE at #4 after they draft their QB at #1. They have a perfect storm scenario. Three 2nd rd picks to follow.

  35. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

that could be Reggie Bush worthy!

  36. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 22 (BUF): Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame (A)
Round 1 Pick 24 (BUF): Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia (A)
Round 2 Pick 11: Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State (B)
Round 3 Pick 11: Armani Watts, FS, Texas AM (A)
Round 4 Pick 11: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State (A)
Round 4 Pick 32: Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio (A)
Round 6 Pick 11: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 7 Pick 7: Cole Madison, OT, Washington State (A-)
Round 7 Pick 11: Arrion Springs, CB, Oregon (A)

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, even if CLE is 6-10 or 7-9 next year it’s a step in the right direction away from 1-15 and 0-16. They all of a sudden become a team you might not want to play. John Dorsey probably saw #1 and #4 along with three 2’s and 12 overall draft picks and said, holy fuck, I could be a legend here. LOL

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

EXACTLY! And the talent they already have on their team isn’t too shabby. And when the hell did they pick up Derron Smith?!!

Yeah he’s had a tough go and often injured. He waived himself to join the Browns. I hope he stays healthy and makes some plays finally. Still pulling for him…

  41. Okay, so I’ve officially put Ogbonnia Okoronkwa on my man crush list. Last time I saw a guy play the end like this was Von Miller at TAMU. Can cover well and is relentless. I know it’s a long shot but if Phins really did want to switch to a 3-4 this guy is their pass rushing OLB that can destroy qb’s.

  42. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SO I SEE there’s divided opinion on whether or not we should go O-Line with our top 2 picks. Well, after seeing what the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” has come up with in prior O-Line picks on day 2, I’d be REAL happy if we went 1 and 3 OR 1 and 2, plugging two gaping holes in our O-Line in the first three (or TWO) selections, depending, of course, on who is available and who is NOT available. After O-Line, I believe TE and a developmental QB need to be addressed before the end of round 4.
    ————
WHO ya takin’ in tonight’s College Championship game?? Right now, I’d take the Bulldogs and the 3 and 1/2 points. Yes, I know Saban’s undefeated in 7 games against his former assistant coaches. But that streak HAS to end some time, doesn’t it??

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure the idea is to look at the talent on the board

It’s not just TE and QB that are the alternatives
It’s also LB, pass rusher and RB

I doubt we go RB early

I would be surprised if we didn’t get some OL help early but it really depends on what’s available

    ————–
Derron’s going to be just fine once he puts his recent injuries behind him, and he will. I see he’s had foot, ankle, thigh, knee, and chest injuries in the NFL… none of which were severe and he’s never needed surgery for them. He had a sports hernia injury at Fresno State after his senior season (you and I remember) that required surgery, but it wasn’t really a big deal. He missed the Combine, but killed it at his Pro Day.

DBs generally need 2-3 years to get acclimated to the speed of the NFL, so I’m really not concerned about Derron and that he came from Fresno State: he’s very smart, he’s so versatile, and he’s a rare talent. Look no further than Jordan Poyer (another former man crush of mine)… he’s now a league-leader in INTs and a PD machine at the Safety position for the Bills.

It’s VERY RARE that a guy like Kevin Byard (another former man crush of mine) balls out so early in his pro career. Byard is the exception, not the rule.

IMO, the Browns just got a future STUD in Derron Smith… and I NEVER give up on my man crushes — especially DBs — to a fault! LOL 🙂

    ———–
The NFL has already gotten into regulating trash talk several years ago, in case ya missed it. This is nothing new.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I did miss. Have caught flags for words being thrown when trash talking ends up in fights, but not for the actual words themselves on the field.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And I see in one article you are absolutely right: “Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was fined in 2014 for using a racial slur; he denied it even after the fine was cut in half.” Still would prefer such get taken care of in other ways.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think they stopped short of regulating the kind of thing we are talking about in this case

      I agree with Stanger

But on the other hand the nfl has to protect itself so while I don’t think it’s necessary for PR purposes, since I think there is a perception that grown men can handle it, the nfl might have to do some sort of inquiry and fine to avoid lawsuits (I don’t just mean this is at d – I mean some one alleging the nfl has a history of failing to act and using this thing as an example)

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

And then where do you draw the line? Who determines what is not acceptable?

I say let the players handle it.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would prefer It’s just between players too

But the league will be concerned about what’s called a “hostile work environment” claim – which is basically saying ___ happened and the nfl didn’t do anything to stop it

It’s the same reason we had the whole Martin saga and why Ross was so cooperative

If an employer doesn’t take action when discrimination occurs – the employer can be punished

I doubt the DE even wants to pursue anything – but the nfl still has to act like he does in case he does if that makes sense

They basically have to be cautious all the time on issues like this. It’s. It just PR, it’s avoiding a lawsuit or protecting itself from liability

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Incognito plays on an OL next to a black LT and two other black players in that group. So he’s making racial slurs against opponents, do his own teammates hear them and how do they feel about it?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Who knows?

It sounds crazy to me that it happens in game given the environment too

But I’m not going to guess at what happened

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wonder if it was just simply trash talk and nobody really thinks much of it or was it of a vile nature which doesn’t seem to make sense. It’s not like Incognito is on an all white team in 1950.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It was probably trash talk and given his history why incognito went there is beyond me

I don’t really think it matters to the nfl if it was just trash talk or not

Actually if it happened, I bet it’s not the first
And I’m sure other players never said a thing bc they didn’t want to make a big deal about (which is their choice)

In this case the player used social media and now nfl can’t pretend it didn’t see it but I suspect even the player doesn’t want anything to happen

He wasn’t offended he basically just fired back at Incognito and probably didn’t think about the consequences of making it public

  49. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Nice article Piggy, I heard Chubb was going early 2nd, i sure hope we can get a guy like that

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

UPDATE: One of Incognito’s teammates, rookie tackle Dion Dawkins, tweeted a defense of Incognito.
“Just for the world to know, everyone always tryna put some bad thing on [Incognito] i was next to my guy the entire game and the entire season and believe me, if he was saying some racist stuff I would have been the first to let him know that was out of line. Cut The BS.”

  51. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think Piggy outlined it pretty well. It seemed like Ngakoue wasn’t trying to make a big deal about it, but once he posted it publicly on Twitter the NFL is forced to look into it. He seemed to be getting the last laugh because his team won and nothing more. But we’re living in an ultra sensitive time where even busting balls trash talk gets scrutinized. My guess is this won’t be a big deal and will be a non story soon enough. Based on what Dawkins said on behalf of Incognito is why I think that.

NFL attendance was down 10% from ’16 for a plethora of reasons, yet ALL related to PC matters. In short, the NFL lost just over $1B in ’16 as a result BS like this… and the accused are always presumed guilty until proven innocent.

Thank you for noticing, my Brother, but it’s a lot easier for me nowadays than you may think. For one, I’m not on a sports blog to talk politics anymore… that would be akin to me going on a political blog to talk football. What’s more, political talk is what destroys great places such as this. I think everybody should stick to football for the sake of the blog, but that’s just my opinion.

It sometimes gets pretty heated here, just talking about a mere little game we all love called football! That’s all good, but politics and religion can be blog-killers and enemy-makers. I’m not here to kill this blog nor make enemies… my passion for politics is better served elsewhere.

We could have a unique situation in a heavy passing league and both Jones and McDonald can bring the hammer in the run game. It might be the answer for covering TEs as well.

That Tua guy is legit. I have never seen a prettier pass thrown by a Alabama QB than the game winner he threw. He has had a few really beautiful passes through this year in limited mop up kinda capacity but given the pressure on him at that particular point in that big of a game, that shows some serious poise. I never have liked Hurts for anything but his calm demeanor but even with that chill attitude he does let games and players get in his head. Expect him to switch positions this coming year if he doesn’t transfer to chase his dream of being a QB. Id expect Saban to win convince him otherwise. I think the guy would make an amazing HB/TE hybrid.

  88. D's avatar D says:

Chubb is no more of a power back than Drake, though Drake does have extra tools in his arsenal to exploit small seams in the defense than Chubb has. Chubb might have a little more ability to drive through a block but its not a significant difference. I wouldnt mind adding Chubb to our RB group, and let Williams walk,b ecause i think that Chubbis equal to Williams as a receiver, i think he is a lot better blocker, and he can grind out yards when we need to. He’d be a compliment to Drake, a guy Gase could put in there to share the load without a ton of drop off in what he could do play wise. That said to me its all about the value of the pick. There are RB’s i prefer more, and Scarborough, just depending on him falling to the 4th or lower, would be a better selection than Chubb in the 3rd. If both were available in the 4th i probably take Chubb though, just because i think there is more there overall and he would be the better value. I really have no desire to take Michel, or even Damien Harris, about the only home run type back id really consider would be a very early pick. Darius Guice has really well rounded skills, he is a remarkably good blocker and receiver to go with that running ability. He would be lethal splitting carries with Drake, but i also dont really feel we have the need to invest at RB so early in the draft, and there are several backs this year that give us power run capability and decent rounded out skills.

Any of these guys in the 3-4th rounds would be excellent additions: LJ Scott, though im worried about the number of fumbles he has had in college, Josh Adams (doesnt have blazing break away speed but he has good short burst quickness), Rashad Penny who reminds me a little of Charles Sims the year he came out for the draft, and i really liked Sims that year.Ronald Jones II (especially if he can continue to add some bulk to his frame) and Royce Freeman (who has already been mentioned).

My sleeper guy though, a guy who could probably be taken in the 6th right now, a guy i think really has something special and he works as hard at his craft as you can possibly hope for, is Ralph Webb out of Vanderbilt. He wasn’t on a very talented team and he has produced solidly. I have a feeling his stock rises before the draft, as more people dig into studying his film but if Gase wants a guy that’s going to do what he is told and is going to put in the prep to be the best, i think this guy is one of those guys.

Shula is having a rough time of it getting his coaching feet. About the time i think things are kinda starting to moving the right direction for him, he’s moving on to another club. I didn’t feel he Panthers really looked awful on offense, especially considering the club traded away their top WR and they lost Olsen for most of the year.

  90. D's avatar D says:

Im kinda of in the Luke Faulk or bust club lol. Id be willing to take Faulk in the 2nd, and really would be willing to do that if we picked up a second 2nd through a trade back. Might be able to get him in the third but i dont think by draft time thats going to be the case.

I like a few of the other prospects that have been mentioned, like Ferguson, who probably goes a round or two later, depending on his combine and pro day. Luckily i should get to see Faulk, Benkert, and Mike White (who is really climbing draft boards right now). With Mayfield and Rudolph, and a couple of small school guys thrown in, the QB’s at Senior Bowl this year cover potentials in from 1st to UDFA, and its possible we might want to double down or at least make one UDFA guy a priority sign as a potential to churn the depth at backup. We have no reason we shouldn’t consider moving on from Moore with Fales, but push Fales with a later round draftee or priority UDFA.

Competition between Fales, Doughty, and new dude, yields our best backup option, and with Tanny most likely as the starter, the top pick can cook behind him in the lineup. The guy we take early needs to be a guy we can see taking the reigns in case of season ending injury or even if the FO has to make a cap type cut because he refuses to re-structure. I dont think the guy we take has to be someone we thing will come in and set the world on fire, just someone who is up to the task of taking the bull by the horns and learning on the job.

We like our long, strong DBs, so signing David Amerson and converting him to Safety almost makes too much sense. Putting him in our zone-heavy scheme instead of a heavy man-to-man scheme (which is all he’s played in the NFL) will net him no fewer than 6 INTs and 20 PDs a season… I’m talking Pro-Bowl.

Amerson shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, he’s now experienced in this league, and I’d designate him as a ‘flex-DB’ (CB/S hybrid). If we draft a DB, it’s probably going to take 3-4 years until that draftee is up to speed.

I’m DROOLING just thinking of Reshad, TJ, and Amerson on the field together… with Howard and Tankersley on the edges.

Amerson’s been cut ONE TIME in his pro career, by the Redskins, who had Jim bloody Haslett as their DC, LOL. Subsequently, Amerson went on to lead the NFL in ’15 with 27 PDs, tied with Vontae Davis (’14) for the most ever this decade.

I don’t even know that he’ll hit FA this year, that’s all up to the Raiders: he was injured most of this past season and they may yet re-sign him. His bread-n-butter is zone coverage, not man-to-man. Let’s not say Amerson sucks when we don’t know what we’re talking about.

    • D's avatar D says:

He is usually around the ball, that’s true. I think he got injured this past season though. My guess is that since he has a 6mil completely recoverable cap hit, coming off injury and part of an old regime, that he would be a player that is ripe for being cut. He isnt a FA, so you would have to hope this is true. The other question is, how bad was the injury and how well can he perform after recovery.

Ain’t no mouse in my pocket.

  95. D's avatar D says:

These are the players that most interested me from the NC game. (Big post, protect your eyes now unless you are really interested in my breakdown).

Roquan Smith (UGA), obviously. really talented kid, great instincts, great play recognition, sure tackler, good open field ability. Would take a first round pick to get him, and we are probably in a good spot to get him, doubt we could risk a trade back to ensure it.

Reggie Carter (UGA). He really isnt too far off the skill set of Roquan, and he is roughly the same type of LB. I dont think he is as instinctual or has the elite play recognition of Smith, but i do think he is a capable player and would be an immediate contributor for us. I dont know if we would have the luxury of cutting Timmons if we took him instead because we would want to have an insurance policy, but i think its a relatively safe bet that he would be at least rotating with Timmons at the very start of the season, possibly starting by the end. His draft stock right now is low, but i expect it to be a lot higher by time the draft rolls around. Best case scenario we would get a chance at him in the 6th, most likely we would have to use a 4th on him.

Lorenzo Carter(UGA) is a OLB/DE hybrid in the mold of Charles Harris. He and D’Andre Walker(UGA) both could operate as a hand in the dirt DE or stand up OLB. It would give us the chance to get a good speed rusher behind Wake/Harris and use the Leo role more, with both Harris and Carter in max rush packages and/or line up looking like it was max rush and then peel back into coverage with with Carter or Harris. We try to do this with Wake right now but that is just really bad for us most of the time. Wake really cant play that role for us, but we need a guy who can for our defense to really make the wide 9 work the way we want/need it to. Carter is probably a 3rd or 4th round investment, Walker probably more specifically a 4th, but i think i heard he said in an interview he is returning for his senior season.

I thought Wynn (UGA) looked pretty solid, i saw him blocking at the second level multiple times. He was playing as the OT, but he can play and has played both OC an OG. Id be looking for him as a starting OG prospect with ability to backup at OC. Depending on whomever else we took at OL it could be he would be specifically targeted as a backup and eventualy replacement for Pouncey, but id prefer a more athletic guy for that, and keep Wynn as our OG with swiss army knife backup potential. I have seen him slipping in the draft board/mocks and only thing i find is people mentioning he doesnt have ideal height. You dont really want your OG’s or OC to be mutants, it helps with seeing over them for the QB and it also helps with the leverage battles to get under the DT and anchor before they start driving you back. If its because they are envisioning him as an OT still, i think a lot of times capable boils down to how hard a person is willing to work to overcome obstacles, and 2-3 inches in height shouldn’t completely change a persons opinion on how good a player will be. I still expect him to be a 2nd-3rd round guy, there is to much talent and versatility there. Senior bowl might really determine if its 2nd or 3rd.

Bozeman, Alabama’s OC is another guy i dont get the downward trend on him. He is a solid OC, he has beena big part of why Alabama’s running game has been so good and in this NC game he held his own in the pass protection, especially with they got a more pocket capable passer in the game. I have seen people ranking him all the way down to 7th or UDFA which i find preposterous. Id take him in the 4th easily, and i think he would pay off for us right off. I dont know about position flexibility, as in he could fill in at OG for us until he took over at OC, but its likely he could. Ross Pierschbacher, i think is returning for his senior year at Alabama but if he isn’t, then he could be a mid round guy who has position flexibility to play OC and OG.

Im somewhat interested in Chubb(UGA), Michel(UGA), Harris(ALA) and Scarborough(ALA), but like with any of the RB’s this year, only at the right price. I also am in the mindset of getting a guy that compliments the skills of Drake and not necessarily mirroring them, though Gase may be looking for more of a mirror in skill set so he can have all options open to him no matter which guy is in there, and he can rotate at any time without consideration for down and distance.

For my preference i think Scarborough is the best of the backs on display last night. He is a brutal downhill runner, solid blocker and a capable receiver. I think this is a guy that can wear defenses down, punch it in from 3 yards out about 90% of the time and take a good bit of grind time punishment off Drake.

For Gase, Michel, and Harris are really good options as they reflect a lot of the dynamic running ability of Drake, both are solid receivers and because they have spent a good bit of time involved in the passing game, they are more polished in pass blocking than Chubb or Scarborough, though i dont really think either of them are particularly bad at it.

Chubb is kind of between Scarborough and Michel, with a lot of ability to come downhill hard into the thick of a congested line and move things forward for a few yards and also get outside and make a cut or two and be gone. He has good receiving skills and as i said, a reliable blocker.

If i had to pick between all of them in the 4th, i am most likely taking Chubb, just for the diverse skillset to pair with downhill grinding ability, and my only real concern is the fact that he has over 750 carries in his college career alone. Still on value alone, Chubb over the others. If Chubb is gone, id probably lean towards Scarborough but again, value says either Michel or Harris (Harris over Michel) would be next best. Its possible all three will be gone and Scarborough is left in the 4th, and it wouldn’t hurt my feeling if that’s how it panned out. I think we win regardless, so the big point here is to remember we dont need to reach at RB, there should be plenty of guys left in the 4th, possibly later, that still will make a good compliment or mirror to Drake.

Calvin Ridley would also be a guy i was tempted to consider in the first, and its possible we could get him even after a trade back(slightly back), but it might be safer if that’s our selection to stay put. Ridley is Cooper esque and Cooper, outside of OBJ has been the receiver i most wanted for us in the past few drafts. I liked Parker too, but im just concerned that things arent working out with him. He had a rough year this year, but the consideration for planning past him as our alpha has to begin now. There are several later round guys id give a chance to, but specifically if we lost Landry, we got to think about Ridley. Ridley’s hands arent as good as Landry’s but they are very good by most standards. His route running is very precise and his speed it above average, and better than Landry’s. He also is gritty and has been called to go across the middle a lot so i think he would give us the toughness that Landry currently does. Another option would be to trade Parker while he still has decent value, and use that pick as draft capital to allow us to use a 1st on Ridley and still have other picks to still get good players at positions of need. That last scenario is not one id force but i do think its got to be in consideration. I also think its very possible that Gase might be thinking about it, as he seemed pretty disappointed in the lack of progress on Parker’s part.

Georgia’s TE Blazevich is a guy i would put as a 7th round target, he has some receiving potential but we would be able to replace Fasano (if he decides to retire, which is something i heard is likely). I think its important to have a guy at the TE position we can very certainly count on to block, and like Fasano i think this guy is just a sleeper receiver that you use to catch teams off guard from time to time. I also believe that the one negative about him, being his lack of production at UGA, is system design more so than lack of talent. We might even wait and let him go UDFA and just make him a priority sign, get Jones and Smith to help sway him to sign with us.

Both the QB are freshmen, so they are off the radar, but if we haven’t established an heir apparent by the time they do hit the draft, i certainly would consider either of them, specifically that Tua kid. Tua’s passes were crisp, and that look off of the Safety for the game winner that was a perfect throw, shows this kid has some real skills. The point at which he was wrapped up around the legs and then broke away for a first was pretty damn slick too, and he probably has at least two other passes that we in perfect places, but just couldn’t be pulled in by those freshman receivers.

Minkah Fitzpatrick (ALA) would be a lovely addition, i dont see him going outside of the top 10 now though, but if he does fall, gas mask, media finding a profile on a furry fetish site, whatever, we would be stupid not to take him. He could play boundary CB, FS, could make it to where we could move McDonald into a LB or hybrid LB/S role. We could probably play a lot of cover 1 which would be ideal to have McDonald and Jones playing roles where they could blitz, or offer press coverage on TE and slot receiver, etc and just leave Fitzpatrick deep to help against whatever CB we have defending their best receiver. We would kill NE’s offense with McDonald or Jones assigned to Gronk in man coverage, the other one releasing on a blitz, CB’s in press like we were when we kicked the shit out of them this year and then Fitzpatrick playing centerfield. Better part is if we got thin at CB we could shift it around to put him at CB and then play with Jones deep McDonald shallow and mixing up our LB package to get the better coverage guys matched up. Not only is he a spectacular player, he gives us a good bit of flexibility.

There are a couple of other guys like Deandre Baker (UGA) who is from Miami, and would probably be a pretty good sot receiver. He might have some outside coverage ability so he could double as a boundary guy, but id be looking for him to play from the slot for us, same thing for Levi Wallace on the Alabama side, he is quicker than he is straight line fast so i think better suited for slot, and he is physical with good ball skills. Both these latter guys are 4th-6th round options for us to get a guy who might take a starting role but definitely helps us with CB depth.

Harrison (ALA) at S could be drafted for a hybrid LB role, he is like McDonald, a very big safety with decent coverage skills but really likes to hit. I mean they are almost identical as is in size and demeanor and if Burke was serious about the idea of trying out a new role for our safeties, then we need to get more capable of playing that role. Not only would we need more designed for that role, but playing your S like that is more likely to get an injury, and we might as well have a guy who can step in instead of having to revamp our defense and change the scheme just to adjust to an injury. Harrison is a 2nd-3rd round prospect so we may feel we have better options.

Dominik Sanders (UGA) isn’t an awful prospect, and probably is going to get drafted below where he really should just because nothing stands out with him. He’s fairly average height and weight, he has above slightly average ball skills, he has probably above slightly average instincts. He was, however, the guy that got looked off by Tua on that game winning throw and left his CB with no deep support. If for some reason we dont re-sign Thomas or Aiken’s we could draft this guy in the 6th probably and get a similar backup/rotational guy who can play ST’s. I have heard the guy seems very coach-able though so maybe he could be developed.

Oh i forgot to add Anthony Averett (ALA), who i think is a WAY better CB than given credit for would also be a person id consider around rounds 4-6.He made some really impressive plays last night.

M13, my guess would be that Oakland, who is in a similar cap situation as us, will possibly cut Amerson and Sean Smith, or at very least one of them. Neither of their contracts are hard to get out of, neither would cost them anything in dead money to cut. They would save 2.5mil more though cutting smith than Amerson if it was an either or. They may decide, however to just draft a guy since they have a former 1st rounder in the wings to take over one spot and they could pair his with one this year and then they would double their cap space in those two moves alone. They dont really have anyone of note, other than Conely, behind those two so they might be forced to keep one and if thats the case its probably going to be Amerson.

Cool pick from a North Carolina gator park when their pond froze over in the recent cold snap. Helps explain why the asteroid strike took out the dinosaurs but the gators and crocs are still here.
