2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – WR’s

At the moment of this writing, the Dolphins are not flush with cap space entering the 2018 NFL season’s Free Agency period.  We currently stand at 29th, with a shade under $10M of cap space.  Of course, that can radically change with a series of cuts and/or restructures, and I do expect there will be some of both which will positively affect our cap space for this season.  That being said, I don’t expect us to be big players in FA, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add a couple of good depth players, and maybe one quality starter.  Teams like the 49ers, Browns and Colts have 8 to 10 times the amount of cap space we have, so we won’t be bringing in the big name players, especially if those teams want them as much as we do.

Because free agency precedes the draft, it completely impacts our draft strategy.  With the potential loss of WR Jarvis Landry, I’m first going to take a look at possible replacements for him.    Each week, I’ll look at a different position, and go over the candidates I think might be in the running for our Dolphins.

WR Sammy Watkins 6’1 211 – 24 YO

ap_colts_rams_football_93693942

Watkins is only 24 years old, and of course, isn’t the same type of WR Landry is, and just so you know, I’m looking at WR’s, not Jarvis Landry replacements.  Watkins has been somewhat of an enigma.  He has talent, and has speed to burn too, running a 4.43 40.  He had a very promising rookie season with our rival Buffalo Bills, reeling in 65 catches for just under 1000 yards (982) and 6 TD’s.  That was the only season out of 4 that Watkins played all 16 games though.  His 2nd season with Buffalo he broke the 1000 yard mark with 60 receptions for 1047 yards and 9 TD’s.  Then the nagging injuries started, and Watkins hasn’t been able to produce anywhere near as much since.  In 2016, Watkins last season with the Bills, he played only 8 games and had a season to forget.  He got new life after being traded to the Rams last season, but still couldn’t reproduce the numbers he put up in BUF.  The difference in LA was he was one of many weapons, and the Rams biggest weapon was their star RB (possible MVP) Todd Gurley, so Watkins, and all the WR’s had to take the back seat to Gurley.

One thing has been consistent with Watkins, he makes big plays.  Last season, 8 of his 39 receptions went for TD’s, and throughout his career, his YPR average is exemplary, at 15.9.  Kenny Stills at 16.1, so he would be another player that stretches the field for MIA.  Whether or not Spotrac is correct in their projection for Watkins market value, I can’t say, but if their right, at $5.9M per year, he’d be worth a look.

******************************************************************

WR Marqise Lee 6’0 192 – 26YO

636129303482301876-USP-NFL-Oakland-Raiders-at-Jacksonville-Jaguars

Marqise Lee is about the same size as Landry, but is nowhere near the physical player Landry is.  He’s had an up and down career with Jacksonville, somewhat stuck behind the 2 other talented receivers there, The Allen’s, Robinson and Hurns.  It’s not that the former 2nd RD pick in 2014 isn’t good, the Allen’s were dynamic.  Lee got some playing this season with the season ending injury to Allen Robinson, yet still put up modest stats, despite starting 14 games.  Much like Watkins in LA, the new show in Jacksonville was RB Leonard Fournette.  Lee’s best season, despite starting only 6 games, but playing in all of them was in 2016, where Lee 63 passes for 851 yards and 3 TD’s.  He’s not a playmaker, nor a gamebreaker, but he’s an NFL WR with experience and talent.  He’s projected to be around $7.5M per year, so he’s in the right range.

*******************************************************************

WR Danny Amendola  5’11 183 – 32YO

7751554

We all know Amendola well, former St. Louis Ram and most recently, former New England Patriot, who BTW, stepped up his game big time taking over for Julian Edelman, especially in the playoffs..  Amendola is a lot like Landry in one way, he makes a lot of big catches for first downs, and is a very reliable pass catcher throughout his career, with an over 70% catch rate.  Amendola doesn’t catch a lot of TD passes, he’s a slot WR, like Landry, and the most TD’s he has are 4 in a season, and that was 2 years ago.  He has good short burst quickness, and knows how to get open, he’s a crafty veteran.  Amendola hasn’t been a super durable player, and I wouldn’t expect that to change much at 32.  If we were looking for a short term contract, Amendola might be an option.

*************************************************************************

WR Jordan Matthews 6’3 212   – 25YO

Buffalo-Bills-WR-Jordan-Matthews-LB-Ramon-Humber-out-indefinitely-with-thumb-injuries

Jordan Matthews started out looking very promising with Philadelphia Eagles in his rookie season in ’14.  he played in 16 games, starting 10, and finished with67 receptions for 872 yards and 8 TD’s.  He improved the next season to 85 catches and 997 yards and again, 8 TD’s. In 2016, Matthews fell off some, catching 73 passes for 804 yards and 3 TD’s.  Teh Eagles, desperate to improve their secondary, traded Jordan Matthews (who replaced Sammy Watkins) to the Bills plus a pick for CB Ronald Darby.  Matthews had a quiet season in BUF, and ended up with only 25 receptions for 282 yards and 1 TD, before being placed on IR with a knee injury on December 14th.  Matthews is a solid player, who has played both outside and in the slot.  After a disappointing ’17 season, Matthews price will be dinged, and I think he’d be a good player to check out.  He had surgery on his knee and ankle at the end of the season, but expects to be healthy for the start of the new season.  I think the former 2nd RD pick is definitely worth a look.

**************************************************************************

Paul Richardson 6’0 175 – 25YO

cst_ek2v1689

Richardson was mostly overlooked in SEA, with WR’s Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse and Tyler Lockett.  Despite being drafted in the 2nd RD, Richardson didn’t get hsi chance to shine until the Seahawks traded his fellow WR Jermain Kearse to the Jets.  Richardson had somewhat of a genesis in his 4th season, with 44 catches for 703 yards and 6 TD’s.  That’s nearly as many catches, and more yards and TD’s than he accumulated in his first 3 seasons.  Richardson, who played in all 16 games last season, started 13 of them.  Richardson has excellent speed, running a 4.4 at the combine.  He only has 1 year of production, and that’s a little worrisome, but it also should keep his price down.  Spotrac projects Richardson at $6.3M per year, which is very manageable.

***************************************************************************

WR Ryan Grant 6’0 199   – 27YO

grant_vs_eagles_usat

Ryan Grant, somewhat similarly to Paul Richardson,  had a big season last year, after being somewhat buried on the depth chart.  Grant played all 16 games, but started only 7, playing in the slot.  Grant caught 45 balls for 573 yards and 4 TD’s, which is more than double of what he did the previous 3 years.  Grant just turned 27, and his production last year might earn him a job as a slot receiver as a starter, and who knows, it might be here.  After all, how hard would it be to change L-A-N-D-R-Y to G-R-A-N-T on the back of your #14 uni?  😉

***********************************************************************

There are some other WR’s that might interest us, or at least interest me, but I’m going to keep it at 6 for every position.  Honorable mentions are Donte Moncrief, Taylor Gabriel, and Kamar Aiken.

  1. I think we all come off snarky and know it allish from time to time and I think we’re passionate about talking about this stuff and it shows. Sometimes we just need to cool our jets and I’m as guilty of this as anyone and I try not to be anymore because I understand I don’t know any more than anyone else on here. Everything is just my opinion and I need to respect the opinions of others as well and I think we all do.

So let’s just remember that we’re all just highly opinionated biatches who love talking about this stuff and that it’s ALL good. We’re bound to get on each other’s nerves every so often but we can all get along.

  2. I don’t know how many on here have seen this interview but it has to be one
of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. It’s great:

I find it interesting how a certain someone here — EVERY YEAR during the Senior Bowl — grows some testicles and starts throwing personal insults out there. This is just a mere observation, not an attack on anyone. The trend is CLEARLY there for everyone to see.

What? This was to M13 and my own admission to being guilty of it. How was this a slight at you?

  7. I’m out. you can slap your dicks off each other’s faces now you bunch of wankers. just save some for tomorrow.

  8. D's avatar D says:

M13 I have never thrown insults at anyone, I just don’t stand by and take yours. If that makes me a bad person I’m 100 bad. I
Did go 0 to 60 as Ken said, but I sensed more if the same shit and responded more to the accumulation of anger to you and not the incident at hand. I could have handled it better but the more you keep at you shit the more I’m not sorry for it. You grow a pair comment shows you don’t have anything as far as sorrow for your part and I can’t empathize with someone who has no empathy for others. We are at a deadlock. Go back and show me a pattern of senior bowl making me start anything. All I have ever done each senior bowl is to try to bring my experience of getting to be here and talk to players and give evaluations to the rest. I do this and put my time towards this site every year and what I get from you is I finally grow a pair and pop off. You are not important to me, I felt at one point I could count you as a friend and we had talked many times about meeting at senior bowl so it’s good to know a comment about it is the coupe de grace. I’ll have more to post to the rest if you tomorrow and then I’ll leave you guys to this place. You can invite OCRob back since I’m the asshole here and ran him off and you can pass me a by Felicia on the way out because I got it coming. Talk to you guys tomorrow. Have a good night.

I truly DO appreciate your insight, D. I wasn’t kidding around about that when you had considered ‘retiring’ from this blog, not too long ago.

I think you have EVERYTHING it takes to be a LEGIT scout, too!

It’s alright to have our differences, man… that doesn’t make us enemies, ya know.

Not playing the victim I’m just over it and over this place. You were one of the reasons I left before and since you will be here I just won’t. Anyplace that embraces you us a place I shouldn’t be because I’m not the kind of guy to just let you keep doing me this way. Since I can’t be, I shouldn’t be here because it’s always going to come back around to this. I admit I did exactly what Ken said I did, but obviously I can deal with you being you so it’s more removing myself from a shitty situation.

Ok I’m irrational. Like I said I’ll close shit out in my traditional styke tomorrow. I’ll post something that will take you guys a year to read so in essence I’ll still be around long after I’m gone lol. I’m not sweating it man, I’ll probably get a lot more done without taking the time to post book long posts that in the grand scheme of life don’t mean anything. You have a good nice and I’m sorry for whatever I did to you to make you feel like calling me bipolar, or growing a pair if nuts, or whatever other insult you want to pretend you didn’t say.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YOU are the one who called me “bi-polar”, behind my back, here on the F-MU. Did you really think nobody was watching what some stated about others?

      • D's avatar D says:

No I remember that, so do you it seems. Now I know why you hold I’ll towards me. You were seemingly struggling back then I actually was really concerned you were not throwing it as an insult. Don’t you remember me actually asking you if you were ok and if you had ever thought about getting checked out just to make sure. I remember being truly concerned but it probably wasn’t a sensitive way to approach it. I actually have an email I sent you a very long time back where I asked you about that too. So yeah out if concerned I did say I thought you might be bipolar

Dude, take a pill! I DO think you’re trying to bait me into a political debate… not going to happen… I’m a Jedi now.

  13. D's avatar D says:

M13 I will tell you I never was more very seriously concerned for another person on here as I was with you back on FU. I really at one time felt very close to you because I felt we were a lot alike in our thirst for football knowledge, etc. Maybe I actually started the downfall inadvertently when I said that but I really only had concern for you. For that, I am sorry because I should have just let it go, but as much as I can be angered and not be able to let it go, when I’m concerned for a friend I can’t let it go either. You and your issues are none of my business. I did wonder why you kept calling me bipolar do now I know. I deserve that then but I can’t go on paying for that. I’m tired of you going at me and you see way past letting that go. Again I’ll have more tomorrow. Sorry fir what I caused you.

    ————-
I don’t recall getting ANY email from you regarding as much. And NO… I don’t suffer from bi-polar disorder or any such thing, for that matter. Why would you suggest as much? What… because we’ve disagreed?

I’ve found that those who accuse others of such things to BE the one’s suffering from as much… YOU match the pattern, my friend.

    Are you alright?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I do NOT mean that to be an insult, by the way.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im not because I have been tested for it. I have ADHD and part if the exam to determine that is to test you for bipolar. Again though, I wasn’t accusing you of it I was concerned because the way you acted before was very much like that ircdrug abuse, I was more concerned with it being bipolar because most people who are uncontrolled bipolar don’t even know it. Again, this is getting into shit that’s way past and should be left there. I’m sorry for it, that’s all I can say.

  16. D's avatar D says:

Btw it wasn’t behind your back if it was on the board you posted on. That’s kinda out in the open. Either way I should have left it alone, I was concerned, several of us were but we shouldn’t have been discussing it. So again, that’s my bad.

Yes, it WAS ‘behind my back’. Look… it doesn’t matter any longer… I just thought I’d bring that up. I think the ‘blog wars’ are OVER.

    • D's avatar D says:

No, I don’t have an issue with you feelings on that matter but the almost rage you use to post about that stuff was so intense it was kinda beyond normal discussion. So it wasn’t the subject it was the manner of you discussing it that had me concerned

Bro, I don’t get the political angle here. D is pretty neutral on issues as am I and many other people here. Most of us our jaded with politics. 25. I honestly think Tampa is a wildcard in this qb thing because even though they have Winston they are really not happy with him and may be looking to move on. So I wouldn’t rule them out as one of the teams who take a qb in the top 10.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

That would be very interesting. Didn’t know they were souring on him. But the more QBs go before pick 11, the better.

      • they’ve been souring on him for some time I guess. they said he hasn’t matured like they were hoping and he doesn’t seem to “get it” so there’s always a possibility with this crop of qb’s they look to try and move on. you have to think that with the number of qb’s in this draft it presents them with that perfect opportunity.

they may look to move him or maybe they keep him around for another year but in any case I think they are in play.

  26. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

They thought Winston was going to mature and “get it”? Lol. I could of told them this long time ago….. lol

  27. I can’t see Cleveland going after Chubb at #4. Their defensive line definitely is not the problem. They, like us, didn’t score many points on offense. While they were only 21st in the league in sacks you also have to think that playing from behind didn’t help that number. I’d look for them to maybe add to the back end of the D rather than the front end but their O is what really needs help.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I could very easily see CLE taking Saquon #1, and then getting the QB at #4, unless of course they got a QB in FA. That would be some haul right there. Talk about jump starting an offense . . .

D – Fuck you man, how dare you leave here! We need you man, and I mean that sincerely. OK, I can’t speak for anyone else really, so I’ll just say I need you. Honestly, if the concern is how much money will be invested in the WR position for the upcoming years, I rather resign Landry for more money and try and trade Parker. In this senerio giving Landry a few more million a year (13/14m a year) and drafting a WR in the 3rd round (with pick from Parker trade) to replace Parker, instead of letting Landry go, signing a FA (8/9m a year)and keeping an underachieving Parker. …But maybe that’s just me.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Makes sense to me. Why keep the one who constantly disappoints and underachieves, and let the one who exceeds expectations go? $14M is too much though, I’d love it if they could keep him for $12.5M-13M, which is also high, but that’s what it’s going to take at a minimum

  32. D's avatar D says:

    Ok, so here goes.
I definitely think i need a break if not completely stay away from this board. I say this with a lot of regret because i do enjoy spending time here. Obviously i care a lot to work out issues because i put a lot of energy towards trying to work them out. The last two though took a lot out of me. In fact, early in yesterdays tiff i was angry and i didn’t have any thoughts on leaving, but as it drug on the more weary i became from it and the more it made me think about this place, what i bring to it, what i get from it, and ultimately how it affects my life.

The truth about this place is there should only be enrichment here, nothing here should be so serious that one should feel burdened by the discussions. At first i was pretty mad because i felt people took shots at me and i defended myself and ultimately i was left looking like the asshole. I really didn’t appreciate Stanger telling me i did to OCRob what had driven me away, because it wasnt the same deal. I just dont see it because OCRob threws accusations out there saying im instigating things with him, and he starts personally attacking me, and others here, and yet its oh D is doing to others what he complained about being done to him. So that took something out of me. Then M13 and this thing and again, somehow im the asshole.

I have said many time that when there are people in agreement on something, maybe there is truth there, so i started thinking about that and i feel like 2 incidents back to back, and even more so this time i went “0 to 60” so fast that there is obviously something underlying that is making me overly sensitive to stuff. This makes me a part of the problem no matter how much i might have felt like i was provoked, and as far as fixing it, i realize now its the only part of the problem i can control.

I would like to say these things about myself to make how i am a little more understandable.

I have always been one to stand firm against what i consider aggression, especially bullying type tactics. I remember early in elementary school, i had a friend who was in some of the special classes, he was retarded and i believe had some level of downs syndrome. His family were neighbors of mine so i grew up knowing he was different but not really seeing him as different, if that makes sense. The kids use to pick on him at the playground and one day they had him circled up and were really being mean to him and i stepped in and backed them down. Later in life i had my own issues with people trying to get at me, and i ended every one of those very quickly by standing my ground and not putting up with their shit. I have stepped in in many circumstances when a friend of mine was about to get in the fight and i put myself in between he and the others and most of the time talked it out and prevented escalation, and there were times it escalated no matter what and i had to fight in his behalf. Its been my tactic a lot of times to take the aggression on myself to deal with it so others dont have to.

Part of me thinks i like to mix it up, that part of me has tendencies towards conflict and that, even though i dont want to create conflict, i want to be involved so i can resolve them, one way or the other. I think this is why certain things here pull me in and why i wind up getting so deeply involved with the arguments once they start rolling and why i wont back off them until i have put the person i feel is in the wrong in the place of at least accepting their blame and hopefully making attrition to whomever they offended. I was not happy with OCRob when he started in on me, but i was still trying to show him what he was doing, when he started attacking SB7 and Son, i escalated it to pull that back to me and then give him a taste of his medicine so he would feel our pain and make attrition. It didnt work and what it did is bring a lot of drama here, something that i didn’t feel good about, and was somewhat embarrassed over. I was also more hurt by the fact that the end result was for me to look worse by it and nothing positive come of it. I could care less if i look worse, or if i take damage from something like that as long as the overall outcome is positive. I failed.

This recent thing, with M13, was partially that same deal and a little bit of pent up resentment towards M13, because as i said , when i left previously, he was one of the 2 people that really made me feel i couldn’t breathe here without someone challenging my authenticity, integrity and the substance of my football knowledge. My integrity is something that i am very proud of, and its something that questioning it will bring my wrath. Lou was the second person i felt attacked everything i said, and at that time he would get really ugly and personal with his rebuttals. With him though i didn’t feel he attacked my integrity, i think he just at a snap invalidated any sort of knowledge or researching i had done to make my argument, so more frustration than anger and more just another brick on the load of why i should take a break.

i do admit now after the rest of the discussion last night i do feel more responsible for the tiff with M13, because he reacted out of pent up anger towards me as well. I did make the statement about bipolar, i remember very clearly the time and what was going on. I remember very clearly my concern for him as it seemed that daily there were these electrifying, bombastic rants that seemed unhinged. I dont feel i went behind anyone’s back, though i did speak to people i felt knew him better to see if they felt like he might be suffering. I wasn’t sure if it might not be drugs, or bipolar, i just knew there was a guy who never seemed that way to me that over night went from one of the guys i liked reading their post the most to one that posted things that did not seem like a person in good mental health. I shouldn’t have speculated on things, and i probably should have just let it ride, but like i said, im not really that type of person, i see a friend in trouble and i want to jump in and do something. Again, that’s a fail on my part, i should have handled that differently.

I hope you guys read this because i really want you to understand me. I dont like feeling like the asshole of the board, or the bringer of blog wars. My intentions are pure even if my tactics are flawed.

As far as people i want to say something directly to, since i called you out Lou, ill start with you. You are a smart dude, i like your contribution, but there was a time where you were not the nicest person and you didn’t care about how you were acting. Something recently seemed to have changed in you and its a very good thing. You content and your opinions are as strong as ever but how you are handling yourself is much improved and it really is night and day different. So while i did call you out for being part of the reason i left before, i am very impressed with how you are handling yourself now. You are doing a much better job than i am lol. Also if it seems i dont like you, or if that’s the opinion you have of our relationship, that’s not the case, just so you can know my position on it.

Mikey, i give you shit all the time, we have locked horns a few times, but ultimately you are like a very older brother to me, hmmm maybe a great great great grandfather-brother to me… yeah thats kinda gross sounding… so you’re like a brother, and you’re old. I have never felt like any of our run ins have been personal or if they got personal it was because both of us just kinda of escalated into that position, not because you really dont like me and i dont like you.

Tim, you are on a similar plane as Mike with me, though we may have locked horns more and i think you have a tendency to be a little more bullheaded (in a good way) than mike. You and i are probably more similar than father time over there, and that’s probably what makes those conflicts more volatile, but its also how i can come back down to seeing eye to eye with you when i eventually cool down and let myself think through your side rationally.

Ken and Piggy, again, you guys are both favorites of mine here too, with probably a lesser degree of volatility in our arguments. Both of you are more pragmatic and you both keep a much more level head than i do, and that balance has helped me get out of the loop when arguing with y’all.

Herd, you have been a very good friend to me here, i appreciate the consult you have provided to me a couple different times and you also very selflessly have provided an opportunity for all of us to congregate here. I know it might not be out there with how much its appreciated but for me it is very much appreciated.

All the admins here do a great job, the articles written, the personal time invested, the moderation when needed, the looseness of the moderation so it doesn’t feel like we are constantly policed, its a good job you do and again, very appreciated.

Son, thank you very much for defending me last time, it will not be forgotten. I am sorry you got drug down into the mire after you did that.

SB7, same deal man, thank you for the support you gave me, and i appreciate it. Also i really like your quips and cerebral kind of humor. I like the figure out what i mean riddles, etc.

Stanger, im a little disappointed with the last time we talked, but ill get over it. Our interaction had always been good up until that point, but i believe you did not fairly evaluate that thing with OCRob. Maybe im blinded by my own perspective, but i do think you made me out to be doing something i wasn’t.

I think i got along with most people here, and some of this felt childish to do, and maybe it is like playing a victim as M13 said, but i really cant stomach seeing myself act this way, and not feeling like i have and alternative to acting this way. I certainly feel like what im doing is having a negative effect and no positive are coming from it. I really dont think i have it in me to just walk by seeing something i consider wrong and not jumping on it. So that kind of makes me vulnerable to having this kind of outburst every so often. This isn’t good for you, it isn’t good for me and its just a big ole distraction from talking about football. I do hope i did more good here than bad, an that the stuff i put out there was useful, education, or whatever, and maybe ill be back, but as Piggy said, the Empire got me down, so i need to take off this helmet, and chill. Maybe ill take a pill like i have been told to do a few times now lol.

Love all of ya’ll even the two people i called out here. I do get really angry once pushed over my snapping point, but i also get over it and get on pretty easily. Im sure ill miss you guys and posting here, so maybe that will bring me back but if not, its been a pleasure posting with you and i hope one day in the near future we are so ecstatically happy with the dynasty of this team that there wont be room for blog wars or even posts like this.

Oh and to OCRob, im sorry man, i went vicious with you at the end. I had my fill and you kept goading me so i gave you a heavy dose of your own medicine. I did it for me and i did it because you also attacked two people nice enough to try to help me out. I will never feel bad about defending them, but i do feel back i was so vicious. I dont expect us to be friends, but id be happy to know you could at least think about that apology and find it in your heart to accept it.

Brady is talking to his five-year-old daughter, Vivian, in what appears to be a family room shortly before she goes to bed. She’s wearing pajamas and a Santa Claus hat.

“Sometimes the Dolphins win, sometimes Patriots win,” Vivian says .

“Uh, huh,” Brady says. “I hope they win one time,” Vivian remarks innocently.

“Not me. I don’t like them. They’re bad guys forever, ” Brady says in a gentle voice.

“Why?” Vivian asks. “Cuz I said so,” Brady said.

What are the strengths and weakness of these QBs you guys mentioned?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Benkert is very accurate and polished passer with a good but not elite arm. Ferguson has a big arm but is a little more raw. He is tall but has a thin frame and needs to bulk up

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Benkert has enough size and above-average arm strength. While he isn’t a great athlete, he has mobility and can extend plays with his feet. Benkert has very impressive deep ball accuracy with the ability to make some phenomenal throws off platform. Benkert will work through his progressions, but he needs to get faster at that and improve his field vision for the NFL. Benkert needs to improve on his feet, but a good NFL coach could fix that. Obviously, working under center and transitioning to a pro system will be a work in progress. The senior is a player to study and consider in the months to come.

If I had to make a prediction now, I would predict him as the QB we select

I haven’t watched him enough to tell you his strengths and weaknesses

Despite going to a small school he’s a pretty good athlete I guess his weaknesses are that he went to a small school

In terms of Benkhart, I’ve seen what WY just posted elsewhere
he’s got an exceptional deep ball

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe 3rd or 4th rd is the right spot to take a QB.

  71. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In terms of Falk, I just kind of like him

he comes across as being a good above the neck QB, as they say
this is a decent scouting report on him

    https://withthefirstpick.com/2017/05/10/luke-falk-washington-state-2018-nfl-draft-scouting-report/

I don’t think he will be a 1st round pick but as we get closer to the draft , I bet a QB will shoot up draft boards and its probably going to be one of those three (White, Benkhart or Falk) – that’s just my guess

I really don’t care for any of the guys projected to go in the 1st either – except for Mayfield

And to be honest, maybe he should be a 2nd rounder

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Mayfield is talented no doubt but wouldn’t even draft him if he were there in the 3rd. I don’t see him as that guy who can make a tight throw when he needs to. That really showed in the game against Georgia. He can make plays with his legs and create. I just haven’t seen any throws of his where he threaded a ball in there. His WR’s are always open or the ball is thrown incomplete.

QB might be the only position you gotta over reach for in a draft, to me. I hate doing it, but at QB I get the logic. That doesn’t mean teams have to do it, but I get it if they do…kinda. Lol

  79. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Tim
    I don’t know If I’m a “fan”
But he has some qualities that may be able to be developed?

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
I think with how QBs are valued in the NFL that it is the only position I see the logic in maybe taking a guy higher in the draft than you may actually value him. I don’t like doing that in the draft, but you may need to do it at QB. They are often taken higher than their talent or experience dictates.

    • I look at it from the point of view that you can pick a rb, wr, o-lineman, te in the 2nd, 3rd and they pan out why can’t a qb? Problem is, qb’s taken in the first are treated as starters. They get all the attention, the first team snaps, the one on one with the coaches. The guy taken in the 3rd is treated as a backup at best.

I just think it’s a narrow-minded way of thinking of things. We don’t look at wr’s and say that only the guys taken in the first are worth the effort or can help the team. Why do it with the qb position?

  81. It’s funny but I truly think if the pundits were talking up Rudolph, Ferguson and Benkert as the top three guys and saying Rosen, Darnold and Allen were 2nd rd prospects or later that everyone would believe it. Players don’t always turn out and nowhere is the draft MORE of a crapshoot than at qb so when you look at qb’s it’s not easy to tell who’s going to be around doing it at a high level in 10 yrs, who is still there and getting by as a starter and who’s going to end up being that journeyman guy that didn’t reach his potential.

So many qb’s have come and gone and only a handful of them have that staying power. There’s only 32 NFL teams and think of all the guys who have been taking just in the last 8 yrs in the first rd at qb.

    2010: Bradford, Tebow
    2011: Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder
    2012: Luck, Griffin, Tannehill, Weeden
    2013: Manuel
    2014: Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater
    2015: Winston, Maritotta
    2016: Goff, Wentz, Lynch

    I didn’t include ’17 because they’re too new.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d be shocked if we didn’t draft a QB. Then you have RT, the Rook, maybe Fales and Doughty and let them all compete. Yes I think RT will win the starting job. LOL

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    lou,
As I said, I don’t really like it, but I can understand the thinking at the QB position. While it is true you can find a franchise QB in any round, most of the top guys are also top draft picks. There are always exceptions, but the majority are high draft picks.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

With all the QBs this will be an interesting draft because plenty of teams need one.

    • THAT is true. But look at their rosters. Do they need a lot of help elsewhere? We’ve had these discussions numerous times before that it’s a team game and we all just saw JAX this season and Bortles is shit.

He’s got the football IQ of a pig fart. (no offense Piggy).

Yet, they won and got to the playoffs despite having a qb that’s not that good. So, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Granted, you’d want someone who’s better but there’s really only so many guys who can play the game at qb the way Marino and Montana played it. So, you have to make a decision that you get the guy you think you can work with and you have to build a team. Not necessarily around HIM; just build a team.

Not saying just 1st rd, but will teams start plucking some of the mid round guys a little earlier? I guess it depends how deep the draft is at other positions. We should be able to get a decent young QB to develop. Not a PS guy.

    lou,
It’s really just the way drafts go. Not always of course, but more often than not the best players go earliest. To me the draft is all about pick value, but I can understand teams over valuing QBs. It’s not just because they are desperate. It’s also because the NFL has designed the game to make them so much more valuable than any other position, so teams will go outside the box to get one. And that hurts me deeply to admit that shit about the little pretty boys. Lol

    • I see it as the best players go earliest in pretty much all the positions except for the qb position. There’s a lot of reaching going on when it comes to qb because teams are so desperate to find a guy.

QB is not always BPA and sometimes it’s not even close to BPA. At no position is there more reaching done in the draft then there is when it comes to taking a qb.

With all the QBs this will be an interesting draft because plenty of teams need one.

what I think may be most interesting about this draft is that maybe it ends up being the deepest quarterback class in the history of the draft. maybe there’s a lot of talent there and most people aren’t paying much attention to it other than the top guys like they usually do.

when you go back to ’12 when Wilson and Cousins went later that could be nothing compared to what we see this year. we could be seeing something unprecedented in the history of the draft. guys like Rudolph, Ferguson, Jackson, Benkert, Woodside and Lauletta could all turn out to be legit. could you imagine that?

Armando’s article was indeed pointless and dumb….

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right? It brought nothing further to what happened except to ladle on his opinion on the matter, again, just to paint the Dolphins as being wrong, when he already has stated that ad nauseum. The story hasn’t fully played itself out yet. What if we get our future starting QB, or TE, WR, DE, DT, whatever, from that 4th RD pick, and Ajayi goes on to have a shitty career, or worse, can’t play due to his knee? The timing of the article was dumb.

Finally caught up on this string. Y’all fight like little girls (no offense to Herd). I hate everyone, but I’m going to keep posting, anyway.

not sure why the current fashion is to trash people who are in all good faith just trying to do their jobs. Gase must’ve gone through some hellacious soul searching about Ajayi.

I’m sad to see the RB leave us, but the seeds of discontent with him were there. This was not as sudden as it might’ve seemed to a casual observer who does not know that he was left off the team plane to Seattle for the first game of the PREVIOUS year.

I don’t have any respect for someone who sits back with no skin in the game and takes shots at everything a guy in the spotlight does. Gase must lead and organize and choose over a hundred men in various positions, all on display 24/7 right into their bedrooms. Armando only has to hunt and peck at a tablet while sipping a latte.

Unfortunately, it’s part of Mando’s job to write those type of things, because controversy sells, even if it’s regurgitated gar-BAHJ

Piggy this is a great great article just so full of info that it’s hard to comment on all that it presents.

But I REALLY want to draft Sony Michel early or Kalen Ballage late but not Kam Pettway. There are several other great RBs in this draft that I would run my card up to Goodell for.

Saquon, Guice, Royce Freeman, Wadley, Penny, and Kerryon Johnson for sure I would draft the minute they are there for us in the proper round and possibly Ronald Jones. Maybe Josh Adams or Bo Scarbrough on Day 3 only.

There are even a few good-lookin guys to pick up in UDFA such as Webb, LJ Scott, and Darrell Williams. Maybe D’Ernest Johnson.

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As far as WRs available in FA, your list is very exciting and would save us a draft pick which after all is much more of a crap shoot at the WR position. This is backwards of the RB position which i hate in FA where you overpay for tired legs. The WRs you showed have proved they can get yds in the NFL.

Except that my favorite guy Sammy Watkins has had some issues, but I think Tyrod’s “style” negates the value of a guy like Watkins by his scrambling being a replacement for waiting for and finding an open WR on a deep route. I’d love to get Sammy if we lose Jarvis.

Otherwise, the guy from Seattle, Moncrief, and Taylor Gabriel are my choices from your excellent list.

  94. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Draftek now lists Harold Landry at pick 11. I definitely want to get a pass rusher in this draft. Wake looks older every day. They show 5 edge rushers going in the first round, which is about right and as it should be given how important they are on the field. (Chubb, Davenport, Landry, Okoronkwo, and Arden Key.) I’d take any of those in Round one and be happy. We need way more sacks.
