Wedge Scouting Report: Maurice Hurst, Michigan

It’s not all fun and games being an intergalactic agent.  You make quite a few enemies when you threaten the entire existence of everyone on the planet.

And sometimes – you even get caught and have to accept whatever the local punishment is for your crimes…

wedgesarclacc1

Like that pesky Sarlacc Pit…

OUCH!!! (turning to an alien poking him in the back with a spear) Okay already…I’m moving…I’m moving!

Having to jump into the Sarlacc Pit is one of those uncomfortable realities you have to accept – kind of like when the Dolphins released Ndamukong Suh.  Having to look at defensive tackles in this draft is sort of like rotting in a belly for 100 years for some of us.  But we have to accept it.

So let’s take a look at Maurice Hurst:

Michigan v Ohio State

)

The Positives:  So offense you want to snap the ball and run your play…well Hurst is going to be in the backfield before you know it, so look out.  Hurst is a penetrator and was one of the most disruptive forces in college football in 2017.  That’s his game – once the ball is snapped Hurst demonstrates the type of initial quickness to get in the backfield to kill the play before it gets started.

In three years at Michigan, Hurst gathered 13.5 sacks including 5 and 5.5 over the last tow years.  He also had 32 tackles for a loss in his career surpassing 10 in each of the last tow years.

Hurst is very good against the run and against the pass.  He gets immediate penetration right up the middle.  That’s the kind of pressure a team can use against a team like the Patriots.

Hurst3

The Negatives:  Far be it from this stringbean alien to call some one that is 280 pounds light, but that is undersized for an NFL defensive tackle.  Because he is undersized, Hurst is one of the few prospects scouts appear to universally agree about.  Almost everyone says he’s a 3 technique defensive tackle in an NFL 4-3.  Hurst did some play some nose tackle at Michigan and occasionally he was overpowered, so most people don’t project he will hold up very well in the NFL at NT.

Hurst was excused from the NFL Combine with a medical red flag.  Its a heart condition that cam up during his freshman year at Michigan, so its not a surprise to Hurst, but it might hurt his stock.  Hurst has since been cleared to play in the NFL and recently had a very good performance at Michigan’s pro day.

His favorite team growing up was the Patriots – so yuk.

Hurst9

The Alien Dust:  That heart condition might be a blessing in disguise for a team like the Dolphins.  You might recall a heart condition caused Star Lotulelei to drop a few years ago in the draft.  Lotulelei has had a pretty good NFL career so far despite the draft day drop.  Lotulelei was a more highly coveted prospect that Hurst is.  So I wonder, will this projected first rounder drop into the 2nd round?  If he does – he’s a steal in the 2nd round.

I mentioned his favorite team was the Patriots.  That’s because his mom was a Patriots cheerleader.  His father, who he has never met, was a defensive back for the Patriots who wore the number 37.  That’s why Hurst wears the number 73, the inverse of 37.  Doesn’t sound like a great relationship there.

Hurst4

Maurice Hurst is this year draft’s version of The Sarlacc Pitt

  3. Okay Tim,
So what positions would you put under each category?
    1. Have to Have – a talented pass catching TE.
    2. Needs – OL, RB, DT, LB.
    3. Wants – a 3rd Safety, a young QB to develop, pass rushing DT.

    1. Tyler Conklin
    2. Billy Price, Jordan Chunn, Lorenzo Carter and Christian Sam
    3. Benkert

I don’t have an answer for the remainder. I know I didn’t play the game right. Suh me.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I will not give up you bastards!!! LOL

    1. Have to Have – means you have an absolute void at a position.

    2. Needs – means you feel the need to upgrade and/or add better depth and competition.

    3. Wants – means you really want to add a top talent to a specific position.

I think that when looking at the Draft this year, we should probably forget about talent. Based on the moves we’ve made this offseason, I should think that we’re looking solely for high-character players.

I’m talking about guys like Ted Ginn Jr (and his family), John Beck, Samson Satele, Lorenzo Booker, etc, etc.

We’re going to be looking for guys who won’t scare Joe Philbin Adam Gase… a roster of ‘yes men’, if you will. And yes, I’ve seen this movie before.

Sorry bro, that’s a crock. What’s funny is you choose 2007 with Cam Cameron. LOL

It’s funny Belichick decides who he wants and doesn’t want on his team for all sorts of reasons but because he wins nobody cares.

Didn’t Gase pound the table for Tunsil during the 2016 draft? Yes he did.
Didn’t Gase keep Dion Jordan part of the org during the 2016 season? Yes he did.
Didn’t Gase bring in T.J. McDonald with some drug/alcohol issues in 2017? Yes he did.

Perception is not reality. It’s an opinion.

Didn’t we make the playoffs for the first time since ’08 under Gase’s first year as an NFL HC?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Yeah…….?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah? Well Gase has jettisoned all of the key players who made that playoff run possible… minus Tannehill… who will have not played an NFL down for the better part of two years come opening day.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, why do feel the need to keep reiterating what we all know here? Yes Gase made the playoffs in his first year in 2016. But to think it was about only the players we moved on from is off base.

Suh – thought you hated his contract?
    Pouncey – played 5 games in 2016.
Landry – part of it, not the reason.
Ajayi – yes and no, big games and attention vs. average and sub par games.

That said, we also went 6-10 in 2017 with all of them – Ajayi for a portion including being shutout 3 times (Jets game we scored 6 on basically the last play of the game).

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You’re beginning to see that Tannenbaum and Gase are NOT on the same page, man.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, that’s your opinion and one I don’t agree with at all. Gase wasn’t here when any of those players were acquired. Tannenbaum was for two – Suh the big FA signing in 2015 and Ajayi as a 5th rd pick. Pouncey was 2011 and Landry 2014.

Everyone seems to ignore that since Grier became GM in 2016 the big FA spending stopped and a focus more on the draft started. He doesn’t even get mentioned most of the time. It’s all about Tannebaum and everything that happens is him playing silly games on his own making trades while Grier and Gase are having taco night. LOL

Perception is not reality. I’m sure Carl Peterson is still involved somehow. 😉

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M- That’s impossible to say. Gase may be the author of every single move, but how could we know this? Sometimes you give guys a shot, and you don’t like what you see, so you cut bait.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My “Cracker Jack Junior Decoder Ring” tells me that unless we have a winning record this year, either of Tannenbaum or Gase (perhaps both) will be FIRED.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well that’s a different story of course, but the guy has only been here 2 years, and in that 2 years, I think he decided who he felt he needed to keep and who he didn’t, and unfortunately, the first list is a short one. Now he’s picking the players, so it’s hard to hold him (Gase) down to just one year. It depends on how we arrive at our record, what transpired to foil us. Let’s say he drafts a 1st RD QB, and say unfortunately Tannehill went down again to injury, and Brock Osweiler and the rookie QB competed for the starting job. Does that get anyone fired? Probably not. If Tannehill plays the whole season, and we suck ass on offense and defense, I suppose anything can happen, but other than that, I think Gase might get one more year at least

    M13, that’s your opinion and one I don’t agree with at all…
    ———–
That’s fair, and I don’t agree with you at all… and here’s why: WE WERE PAYING TWO PLAYERS
‘QB MONEY’. Do you really think we could have afforded to bring in yet ANOTHER high-priced FA? OF COURSE NOT, GEEZ!

I told y’all that this could not continue (paying 2 players QB $$$), did I not? I told y’all that either Suh or Tannehill would be cut, did I not? I WAS wrong in thinking it would be Tannehill… it was Suh instead.

Oh, how so many FORGET what I’d stated, and so adamantly, not so long ago, SMH. That day of reckoning came, as I predicted.

And so instead of placing blame on Tannenbaum and his reckle$$ spending, it’s all about “culture change”, instead… RIGHT!!!

C’mon, man. Blind homerism is one thing, but REALITY tells a very different tale… recognize the difference.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Look, I have no allegiance to M-T-P at all, I didn’t care for that signing in the least. I do think Gase is calling the shots now though, telling both MTP and Grier what he wants, and those 2 guys are trying their best to get him what he wants. Let’s see how the draft goes, and then FA after that, and then of course, let’s see how the team does before drawing negative lines in the sand. Why bother? Think of all the problems we’ll have if we got 11-5. Will MTP get an extension? 🙂

  19. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

If the team wanted to bring in another high priced FA, I think they could have. They have never ran out of money. A lot of people were saying how broke they were coming into this year. They had no problem signing players…..

I’m fine with the players we lost. Landry hurts a bit, but I get it. Of the players they let go I don’t think any of them were going to propel the team to the Super Bowl. It’s a team sport and it’s how all the parts fit together. It’s up to the FO and coaches to build it, not just throw pieces in.

And “culture change”…..I am not in the locker room or facility to know the truth. But there had been little signs here and there over last 2 years.

I need this type of WR, this type of TE, etc. and i need guys who run the GD plays so we can play through our game plan the way we set the Damn thing up!”

I think he might be the first coach to stand up to Tanenbaum and demand what he wants. And get it.

And unless the whole team mutinees and we go like 4-12, I think there is no way Gase gets fired. He’s building a great team for the long run. We are getting very young at the same time as getting in some true mentors and inspirational guys.

I just made a salmon sauteed in capers, soy, and mustard. That and a Caesar salad along with a baked white potato. Quite hearty. Plus some pineapple dipped in chocolate hummus and a couple dark chocolate chunks with jalapeno peppers in them. Wow. Needed two margaritas to wash it all down.

Yesterday i had an awesome blackened red snapper for dinner and for lunch a scrumptious pineapple coconut mahi mahi. Both with eye popping salad bars. I live on the Gulf of Mexico is why.

But then one day recently I had something called an anti-resolution burger, as in against one’s New Year’s vows. It was a thick-cut bacon, cheddar cheese, fried egg, lettuce and tomato, grilled ground chuck on a sesame potato-flour bun with some spicy brown mustard and classic fries smothered in ketchup.

Eating Pigs is against my religion, but a man’s gotta have some bacon for special occasions, right?

you make all that Indian food sound great, but I’ve never really eaten any of that you described. Some cumin lentils and black rice sure, but those preps, sauces, and spice combos you listed on the other page sound intriguing.

Is it really really spicy, like hot spicy?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have never eaten in an Indian restaurant before. Not everything was hot and spicy, I think spicy is usually thought of as hot. I would say the dishes that weren’t hot had a mild heat to them, and the Vindaloo, was a moderate heat. All things were just bursting with flavor, so different from what I’m used to eating. The only Indian food I have eaten is a Wegmans Frozen Butter Chicken meal, which happens to taste great, it’s a Tandoori flavored sauce, which is pretty common in Indian food. I would try it Naples, I was very happy with it. I would think like with any cuisine though, some restaurants will be better than others, so find a highly rated restaurant that Indians go to, and try it with confidence.

Got back from several days in Baltimore late last night. Spending more time in the land of low temperatures and high taxes made me love living in Florida even more than I did!! Business trip was successful. However, the passing of Wayne Huizenga did set me back a bit. Except for his disastrous 1-15 season, most of his reign as primary owner was marked by winning seasons and the occasional playoff victory. And he dealt with his season ticket holders very fairly with virtually NO FUCK-UPS regarding ticketing, parking, etc. –And he NEVER charged $16 for a beer nor did he force long term season ticket holders to move to the other side of the field or upstairs from downstairs. And he certainly did NOT need to eliminate over 11,000 seats to achieve a sellout.

HOPE YOU GUYS AND GALS have decided on what this franchise needs to do in the upcoming draft. Anything you, as a group, decide on undoubtedly will be better than what Ross, T-Bomb and the rest of the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” do in the upcoming weeks and months. A couple of Ravens fans and a Patriots fan I encountered while in Baltimore all thought the Dolphins franchise was going in the wrong direction (with no end in sight). I’d tell you EXACTLY what they said but it would only make readers even more pissed-off than they already are about the Fins 2018 outlook. The lone Pats’ fan who commented did say “Are the Dolfins trying to imitate the Marlins by getting rid of most of their star players?” I replied, “I think the Dolfins will have a better winning percentage than will the 2018 Marlins.”

  42. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Timmons and Thomas we all knew was coming.
Pouncey asked to be released because he got mad they wanted a restructure. I agree, he was a liability and you need a C that actually practices with the OL.
    Landry priced himself out.

That’s how I see it. They had 10M carry over last year until RT17 went down.

Basically to me if you have a ton of money every FA period it doesn’t bode well. The Super Bowl champs were in way worse shape then the Phins and they have to dismantle their championship team…..we had to dismantle a 6-10 team. No biggie. But I don’t see it as dismantling.

They kept James at 9M. I think they handled everything ok. That extra 10M would of been nice, but all I see extra money do is sign FA to more than they are worth.

    • Whatever the reasons were for the players being let go, whether traded or released, there were enough changes with key players to be a dismantling. It would be a different story if it were non-essential guys but we got rid of what people consider to be our top players on the team other than maybe Jones and our qb.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Pouncey, Timmons, and Thomas were key players? I have to disagree with that. Suh and Landry are the only good ones gone. All the belly aching over Suh’s contract is over and Landry wants AB money.

I don’t care what this offseason would be categorized as, they got rid of Suh and his stupid contract that shouldn’t have been here in the first place. It’s never a good idea to throw tons of money at the WR position. We offered way more than we should have at Landry and he scoffed at it. Pouncey was overdue for hitting the road. The other guys were stop gaps.
Get this franchise on the right track. Stop overpaying positions that don’t deserve overpayment, regardless of the player. Get lunch pail / coachable types, sprinkled with 1-3 stars, solid QB play. Use the players to the best of their ability and with purpose (something Gase has yet to do unless he’s been forced to do). Save for long snapper, you can’t look at this roster and say there isn’t a position out of the question in the first round.

Is the NFL seriously considering eliminating the kickoff?

I would honestly be happy if they removed kicking from the game altogether.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        4th a 7 on the 40…..
Yeah we’ll just take the automatic 3.
        Lol

        Do you mean punts too?

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah they have been back and forth on it for a while. IMO there is a simple way to represent the kickoff without having on. After a TD you line players up on the 40 with a 4th and 10. The team can punt to the opposing team or they can go for it (onside kick). I wouldnt want them to just take it out and put it on the 20 because i think it removes the chance for a highlight reel kind of play, and it eliminates a niche player from a team. If they did it that way though, you still have the return chance and you still have the “onside kick” opportunity that sometimes makes a game really interesting when its close.

  53. D's avatar D says:

IMO WR is the new RB, ie replaceable every 4 years despite the talent level of the player. The only reason then to sign them for extensions is that they represent the character of your team well. Leadership shouldnt be overlooked as a commodity to pay to keep, but if you feel like that player doesnt really represent a major loss in that way, the talent can be replaced every year. It might not be a 100% replacement but it can be close enough for the amount of fiscal savings to justify it.

The thing i had to come to the conclusion with Landry was that he didnt represent the team well and he wasn’t the leader i felt like he was. I really liked the spunk he played with and the fire/passion he showed, even when it got out of control. Still there were other things going on behind the scenes, as someone mentioned before things that were visible here or there, that said he wasn’t that guy to Gase. So im completely in the mindset now that Landry wasnt as suited for our team in the way that justified that kind of money.

  54. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  55. D's avatar D says:

I think punts have an artistry to them, so id hate for them to remove that aspect, but kickoffs, meh its not nearly as strategic and in fact most teams just try to kicking it out of the back of the endzone now. They somewhat created this problem when they moved the kickoffs up, since now they are almost all touch-backs.

  56. D's avatar D says:

The Browns actually have enough money to do that and still have more left over than they can carry over to next year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but paying that much for two WRs is absurd. In a few years they won’t have that much cap and they’ll be looking to get out of those deals.

      • D's avatar D says:

Maybe, but if they give themselves outs, then its not a biggie.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

That’s an “argument” I had with a guy the other day. He was going on about Dorsey is going to make the Browns so good now. Really?
He was gifted 100M and boat load of picks and team with a lot of top picks on it. Anyone on this board can do well with that scenario. My case was let’s see in a few years what’s going on there.

      • D's avatar D says:

With that much cap they can front load the shit out of the contracts and they wont be stuck later. They really could do those contracts easily.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, they’ll never get their moneys worth paying that much for WRs. But hey, go for it. I don’t care. LOL

Im not suggesting they will or they wont because thats not something i can say, no can you for that matter, but they simply can afford it and it wouldn’t cap fuck them if they just got all the money out of the way this year.

  60. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Woo Hoo!

  61. D's avatar D says:

I wouldnt care if they took out the kickoff, but i also wouldnt care if they just left it alone. The kickoff has never been overly exciting for me, i find going for it on 4th down much more exciting, hence the scenario above. I also like the onside kick, at least the strategy part, though the kickicoff part wouldnt be as exciting to me as a go for it on the 40 in a 4th and 10 scenario. There are ways to change this and add excitment to the game, but knowing the NFL they will vanilla the fuck out of it and we wind up with something even more boring.

  62. D's avatar D says:

I still havent figured out why people havent jumped on the go for 2 every time thing. With PAT’s being from the 30 and there being like a 90% success rate with even some of the better kickers, i am not sure why teams aren’t going for 2 every chance.

So 90% of the time you come away with 1 points, so basically this means that if you went for 2 every time you would only have to be 45% effective getting them to break even. Anything more and you are ahead of the game. I cant see a ton of teams who could be at least 45% effective on what boils down to a 4th and goal from the 2. Fucking patriots probably would be 60-70% effective.

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    from the Phinsider
The Miami Dolphins have done plenty to address the quarterback position this offseason both through free agency and preparing for the NFL Draft. Executive VP of Football Operations Mike Tannenabum signed veteran passer and former Adam Gase pupil Brock Osweiler to a one-year contract while also re-signing young gunslinger David Fales, both of whom will compete to backup Ryan Tannehill next season.

The team’s scouts have also kept their eye on the top signal callers in this year’s draft class. Miami’s interest in former Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield has been well documented, but he’s not the only quarterback that the team has been keeping tabs on.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins attended the Pro Day of former Washington State QB Luke Falk and came away impressed enough to plan for scouts to attend special session with him on March 28.

Falk is expected to be a day two draft pick with plenty of traits that are making general managers around the league begin to take him seriously as a potential franchise starter. He has impeccable mechanics and beautiful touch on outside throws. However, his limited mobility and questionable deep ball accuracy are keeping him from being mentioned among this year’s upper echelon of quarterbacks. With all of that said, the Dolphins are clearly looking for a young project to sit behind Ryan Tannehill and learn Adam Gase’s system. Falk could be just the guy Gase is looking for.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ive liked him since last year when i thought he might declare then. Id be happy with him as a consolation prize but i would definitely like to see us go big in the first at QB. If they have their guy, and even if that guy is Mayfield (who isnt my top guy) i want to see us nut up and make the move. Id rather us swing and fail than watch strike 3 cross the plate.

    • They supposedly spoke very highly of Rosen as well. Personally, I think the only way they take Rosen, Allen, Mayfield or Darnold would be if one of them fell to them at the #11 but I can’t see them using their draft capital to move up to get one.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im leaning against them using draft capital to move up, but i wouldnt put it past them. It sounds like to me though they are investing time in other QB’s to give themselves backup plans, but even if they do like Falk, or some other day 2 guy, i really wouldnt put it out of consideration on a trade up. 6th should be good enough for one of the top 4 and it would likely take this years 2nd, next year 2nd and maybe a 4th to move up 5 spots.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Falk has a lot of great intangibles but lacks a big time arm.

        IMHO He’ll be a career back-up

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s one of those guys i was talking about that has top teir backup written all over him. He doesn’t make many mistakes, he gives you solid QB skills but he isnt digging you our of a hole. You can get by with a QB like that, and its possible he develops past that but i dont know that you ever see elite ability with a pretty average arm.

  71. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Mike, let me guess. Your FB wall is filled with gun debates. 😉

  74. D's avatar D says:

I really think the Osweiler thing sets the tone for them being unlikely to trade up. I think Osweiler was brought in as a “break in case of” QB and not force us into a scenario where we had to trade up if we arent just 100% sold on one of these guys. Osweiler on a 1 year gives us a finish the year out QB if we have selected a QB day 2 and just really dont want to throw him to the wolves if Tanny does sustain a season ending injury. I dont think it keeps us from making a trade up and i dont think it takes us out of QB in the first, i just think it gives a little flexibility on what we do and what we are willing to do it for.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or Osweiler and Fales compete for the backup job being both know the offense and a rookie wherever we draft one sits and learns. If Tannehill goes down the vet backup would be next up. If he struggles maybe the rookie gets the nod at some point.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think the Osweiler signing means nothing. At best he is a backup. He may not even make the roster. If we have to play for a full season you can bet we will be at the top of next years draft

    —————————————————
Whats worse is society is that way too now. Every issue seems to be “black and white” and yes that pun was intended. We cannot seem to rationalize things we cant have any moderate thoughts about different subjects its all this group hates this group and that group hates this other group. I think our politicians and definitely the media are at the core of this divide because its sensationalized by both for their own gains. I really dont have a lot of hope for the shit to straighten out anymore.

Considering society as a system with boundaries, i see two ways it could self regulate. 1) like pendulum, when it swings out to one side or the other forces that are stronger in the middle pull it back to the center and eventually through gaining and more moderates we normalize the system or 2) the system gets so out of whack, ie we keep losing more and more moderates, that it is destroyed and then get built back in a default state by those that are left standing, ie the moderates that are left that were not collateral damage in the destruction.

I think we have lost the strength in the middle sufficient to pull the whackos on the outside back under control, so that to me leaves option 2 where shit is going to get a lot worse and be torn all the way down and rebuilt. That may seem really pessimistic but shit is trending that way. There will be a point of no return where option 1 isn’t available to us anymore, and im not sure if that point isn’t already passed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It sure as fuck seems that way. I’m amazed that many people I know are trending that way. However there are still some of us willing to look at each issue from a common sense perspective and not just following the party line. But man, it really is disheartening.

I think it’s an immature baldy because when I looked at it with binoculars it didn’t look like a red tail hawk to me which are common. Everything about it was bigger. Looked very similar to this but more white happening around the head and a much bigger beak than a red tail. Bald and golden eagles are known to be around here so it’s very possible that’s what I saw. I’m also not very far from the Passaic River which is where a population of them are.
