2018 NFL Draft – Linebackers

Staying with defense, last week I covered the defensive tackles, so this week I’ll look at another big need for our team, the linebackers.  Right now we can pencil in Kiko Alonso (WLB), and redshirt rookie Raekwon McMillan (MLB).  That’s about it.  We still have Chase Allen who showed some promise, but I’d have to think we’ve seen the last of Koa Misi, and Neville Hewitt signed with the NY Jets, so he’s gone as well.  If we stay at #11, it’s pretty likely that one of the top 2 prospects will be there, and if we trade back, the 3rd best guy might be right at that spot, depending on how far back we move.  If we trade up for a QB, that’s going to make acquiring one of the top 3 guys an impossibility, but since we have no idea what we’re going to do with our pick, let’s look at the LB’s.

Tremaine Edmunds  6’5 253  Virginia Tech

899409176.jpg.0

If the last name seems familiar to you, it should, because his dad Ferrell was a TE for our Dolphins from 1988-1992.  Edmunds looks the part of a TE too, he has great size at the LB position, with long arms (34 1/2″) to latch on to ballcarriers.  Edmunds is very athletic and has great speed for his size, running a 4.54 40, 2nd only to Roquan Smith, who is considerably smaller than Edmunds.  Tremaine became a starter his Sophomore year and started all 13 games for VaTech.  Making tackles in the backfield is his specialty, with 16.5 TFL in his Sophomore season, and last year, his Junior season 14 stops behind the line, in addition to 5.5 sacks this year, and 4.5 last season.  Tremaine was in on 108 tackles (57 solo) this past season, and 94 tackles (49 solo) 2 seasons ago.  Edmunds is definitely an impact player who is still only 19 years old, he’ll turn 20 after the draft.  A lot to like as a prospect, he’d be my first choice if we stay at #11 and the top 4 QB’s are gone.  Edmunds was rated at 7.28, by far the highest rated LB.

*************************************************************************************

Roquan Smith  6’1 236  Georgia

Roquan Smith

Roquan and Raekwon?  It could happen!  Roquan is a playmaker, it’s that simple.  He’s always around the football, and has made a ton of tackles playing for Georgia.  He is a little undersized at 6’1 236, but a lot of LB’s these days are about that size, and have done well.  Like Edmunds, Roquan became a starter his Sophomore year, and immediately started piling up the tackles. 95 of them (52 solo).  In his Junior year, Roquan went over 100 tackles (137 total, 85 solo), along with 14.0 TFL, and 6.5 sacks.  Both of these guys spend a lot of time making plays in opponents backfields.  One plus for Roquan is he’s better at diagnosing plays and being in the right place, where Edmunds lacks a bit in instinct, but has the speed and athleticism and size to make the play.  He’d be my #2 choice if Edmunds were already taken.  NFL.com has Smith rated at 6.62.

*************************************************************************************

Leighton Vander Esch  6’4 256  Boise State

Vander-Esch4

Vander Esch is #3 in my book, but he’s a mid to late 1st RD prospect, so if we don’t take him in the first, he’s goners by the time we get to RD 2.  Unlike the first two prospects, Vander Esch didn’t become a starter until his Junior year at Boise State.  He had quite the season though, finishing with 141 total tackles (91 solo).  He also contributed 8 TFL, along with 4 sacks.  While he only has one year of real production as a starter, he’s still my #3, although the next prospect is very close.  I like his size and ferocity, and while he doesn’t have speed that Smith and Edmunds have, he’s good at shedding blockers, he’s very good in coverage, he had 2 INT’s and 5 passes defensed, along with 4 FF’s.  I think he’s going to get better as a pro, he’s going to get even bigger and stronger.  He’s very athletic, with excellent short burst speed and agility.  NFL.com has Vander Esch rated at 6.2.

*************************************************************************************

Rashaan Evans  6’3 234  Alabama

905110474.jpg.0

Rashaan Evans became a starter in his Junior year, and decided to stay at Alabama to continue learning the game his Senior year.  In 2016, his Junior year, Evans started 13 games, finishing with 52 tackles (31 solo), along with 4.5 TFL, and 4 sacks.  In his Senior year, Evans started 12 games, and made 74 tackles (35 solo) along with 13 TFL and 6 sacks.  Another LB who spends a lot of time breaking up plays in the opponents backfield.  I see him as pretty close to Vander Esch, but Evans is also likely a 1st RD pick, mid to late 1st RD.  Evans is a little light for his height, and although he didn’t run the 40 at the combine or his pro day, he ran the 20 YD shuttle at 4.36, so I’d think he’s somewhere around 4.6 in the 40.  NFL.com has Evans rated at 6.1.

*************************************************************************************

Fred Warner  6’3 227  Brigham Young

092917_FBvsUtahState-12-1024x683

The last prospect is always tough, because that means I had to eliminate a few other prospects to choose this one, but I think Warner is worth it.  He fits the hybrid role of S and LB.  He’s excellent in coverage, and that would be his greatest strength.   Another prospect who is a little light for his height, but maybe that’s what allows him to be so great in coverage.  Not the best tackler in this group by far, he still made his share.  His 7 INT’s is easily tops in this group.  Warner has started since his Sophomore year, and like Evans, stayed in college his Senior year.  Warner finished up last season with 87 tackles (48 solo) along with 9 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT and 1 FF, and 1 FR.  He would have to be used in passing situations as the nickel or dime LB, unless he shows he can tackle better than he did in college.  Warner is a team captain, so that’s a positive going forward, and he has good instincts too, but needs work on tackling technique.  NFL.com has Ward rated at 5.64.

**************************************************************************************

Close cuts were Darius Leonard, Josey Jewell and Micah Kiser, more mid RD picks.  I’m sure I missed a favorite of yours, and if so, tell me about it on the blog.

If a player retires from the IR – is he healthy?
    ————————————–
IR is kinda like being retired from the active roster so wouldnt retiring from IR be dead? I mean thats the next step down from injured is dead and the next step down from being a reserve is being off the team, and dead also qualifies you for that.

  11. Tim,
Sorry but I didn’t get that. Are we supposed to be impressed with a wr who was taken with the 16th pick in the first having back to back 50 catch seasons? I mean, c’mon, what kind of logic are you using here?

The guy has been in the league for 3 seasons, hasn’t even sniffed 1,000 yds yet and only had 1 td this past season. He’s averaging less than 3 td’s per season.

How long are you supposed to wait for these guys to develop? We’re not talking about a 2nd or 3rd rd player here, we’re talking first rd and if Carroo were in there over the past 2 yrs he probably would have done just as good, if not better, and he gets all the shit.

  12. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’m hoping Gore, Amendola and Wilson can improve the offensive stats I think Gase wants to use amendola like he did Welker in Denver, and Wilson is flat out fast!

Definitely not an enjoyable task. Mine went kind of differently, my dad passed first, and then my mom went 3 years later, and my wife was the executor of the estate, and we were supposed to meet at my mom’s house one night at about 6, and by the time my wife and I got there, my sister and my aunt had laid claim to just about everything of significant value, like a couple of angry vultures. It was so unpleasant, I still have a bad taste in my mouth after that experience. There’s never a good way for it to go down, but that was selfish and ugly.

Mike E — the way my Dad set up his will proved once again he was smarter than me. In this case when it came to the personal stuff of value. Keep in mind I was only the golden child cause there was not much competition. Worked with his lawyer on his document and we put in that I should take in all the whatever and distribute it equally. When I saw the final signed will (before he passed)….it went all to me. My Dad said, “you will do what is right and this way they won’t sue.” Smart man my Pop was.

After investigating with the bank i had all the documents to prosecute her.
when i confronted her about it she said that’s what she charged for taking care of her, she did take care of her.

I just let it pass, freak’n hard enough to endure the mourning then i had to deal with that crap.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s McDonald talking about it. Gase didn’t throw him under the bus, he’s well aware he and Jones didn’t live up to the expectations. He’s admitting he can be a better player. Nothing wrong with that.

  29. Jakeem can definitely get up there. Parker is in trouble:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He caught a couple of passes like that last year. I think Grant is a sleeper a lot of people are sleeping on. It’s not just “replacing” Landry with Wilson and Amendola, it’s Grant in the mix too. Then you have Stills and Parker and Carroo getting another shot. It’s not like we have no talent and options. Add a good TE to this group and the RBs and I think we score a good amount of points. The OL looks good on paper but once again health is the key.

May I even mention Tannehill getting back in the groove he was finding before he got hurt? LOL

Seriously, Gase said he feels Ryan watching from the sidelines and still staying involved gave him a broader perspective on what’s going on with the offense and how it’s defended. His challenge will all be about the knee and the confidence in it, and taking those first few hits. After that, if all is good I see him ascending with this new personnel group. He’s already been cleared for all offseason activity. We’re going to be a faster offense. Speed everywhere.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The WR screens are not going away. Amendola and Wilson have experience in them and they’ve been productive. Add Grant to that. 5-11, 5-9 and 5-6 shooting out of a group with quickness and speed. That’s what the Pats do. We talked about it all offseason. The first thing we did in FA after trading Landry was to sign Wilson and Amendola – one experienced slot guy and an ascending one.

We have to add that TE who can stretch some field and be a factor. A rookie RB to deepen the group would be great.

    ———-
Oh yeah? The way I, and most of the world understand it, Gase was the FIRST to throw McDonald under the bus, when Gase was speaking at the Combine. Anything afterward is reactionary from McDonald, as it applies to Gase’s Combine comments.

Gase is certainly NOT a leader of MEN.

“I don’t think it really turned out as well as we thought with what we saw in training camp,” Gase said. “I think that eight-week layoff, T.J. did a great job of being ready to go and being able to really get in there and physically be able to do it, but I think we didn’t have that chemistry we were looking for. It took those guys a while to really kind of get that feel with each other. We’ll be better getting into training camp and for us being able to continue that growth. I was feeling something good there when we were in the middle of training camp. T.J. was playing really well, and Reshad and him were really doing a good job of communicating with each other, and there was a good feel.”

This is throwing Mcdonald under the bus? Or was there something else said not showing up in this transcript? It seems like a coach giving an honest assessment to me.

While she was still recovering in Hospital, (4 weeks)He was supposedly Helping her with her finances and paying her bills.. Turns out he had access to her bank card and was paying all HIS bills (he was not working), and spending a fortune weekly on Booze, taking Cheques to her to have signed, and Kiting cheques in and out of her account, and taking steps to become Power of Attotrney .. to the point that we had to get her psychologically paneled as not able to look after her self .. soon discovered that the Home Insurance had lapsed due to non payment, her alarm company was sending to collections.. i went to her banks and advised them what was going on, and they shut the accounts down.. He WAS PISSED.. ended up losing his house over it., and moved up north into my Moms Family Cabin… he cut the lock that had been put on by the Trustee and moved in. eventually the Trustee asked us if it was okay to sell the cabin to him, and we agreed to let that happen as long as mom got the proceeds She lived in a group care home for another 5 years in relative good health.. but once we had turned her affairs to the Trustee in order to Stop him from being Power of attorney they took control of everything,, locked us out, cleaned out the house, liquidated all her assets and managed her accounts for the balance of her time.. she passed away two years ago this May.. we just now received final settlement on her estate.. which was actually in good shape once we cut of the bleeding…..

In no disrespect to MF13 and others on here who have a keen eye for talent but I highly doubt Gase, Tannenbaum or Grier even know this site exists. Even if they do they better not be considering our opinions on talent evaluations. They are paid for their professional opinions and not our amateur opinions. This time of they will spend up to 100 hours a week doing talent evaluation. MF 13 and others here do have good insight but in no way does it approach of what a professional scout does. If they are listening to what we are saying then it is a sad state of affairs in our FO.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Are you saying they still eat bacon bc I’m not cool with that…

    • what if they have 3 players rated relatively close at #11 and they’re reading social media and see that one of them is the absolute fan favorite and the 3 guys are so close they can really take any one of them and be satisfied.

Do you think the idea that the fans would go absolutely bonkers over one particular player could sway their opinion any? Just asking.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If that were the case they would have drafted Brady Quinn

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I will agree that selling season tickets and putting fans in the seats is a factor in the draft but that is different than considering talent evaluations from bloggers on a fan site

      • Ken, they wouldn’t have drafted Quinn because they didn’t have him rated that high. So the fans didn’t matter in that case. I’m saying you’ve got a shot at Smith, Edmunds and James and the fans love one guy in particular and you’ve got all three rated pretty much equally. The idea that the fans love one guy has got to sway the pick because you really don’t have a deciding factor otherwise if you’re rating them equally.

    • Sorry Ken but I KNOW they read my stuff. How do you explain my Tweets and then the following:

I tweet, “Some smart GM is going to take Tony Lippett. As a cornerback.” and then we draft him as a cb.

It’s reported that New Orleans wants to trade Stills and I tweet “If I’m Miami, I’m on the phone with New Orleans right now making it happen” and not long after that we’ve trade for Stills.

It’s reported that Branch is visiting the Phins facilities and I tweet, “If I’m Miami, I’m not letting him leave” and they sign him that day.

So are you trying to say all that was just a coincidence because, if you are, I think you’re probably right.

  53. I think maybe Gase sometimes like to play head games with players to get to them and make them and put them on notice. It’s a Parcells thing. He did that when he was a coach. So, when he’s talking about McDonald you kind of know that missing half the year and being on a new team was going to be a bit detrimental but, at the same time, he’s not going to allow TJ to use it as an excuse because missing half the year was on him and also that he needs to make sure he’s putting the effort in going forward because he won’t hesitate to replace him like he did with others.

  54. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think if we don’t get a Roquan style LB (even if it’s Skai) then we need to move TJ into that role and get us a real FS who can INT deep and not let anybody ever get behind him.

  55. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t believe there’s a magic pill that makes scouts that much better than a drat-nik enthusiast, the draft is a crap shoot, how good was the expert who evaluated Ryan Leaf?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There is always an inherent uncertainty when you are evaluating individual talent but there is a big difference between who does it for a livin for years for some times up to 100 hours a week as opposed to a draft nil on a fan site. Doesn’t mean the professional is always right but I highly doubt and hope that the professional is not listening to the amateur

      • I really think there’s just a shortage of really good people who have the ability to do what these guys do for a living. When you look at what teams do when they pick players in the draft and add players thru FA you have to wonder what some of them are thinking.

So, talent evaluation is not equal across the board, from one team to another. But, you have to consider that the life of an NFL scout isn’t all that glamorous with the travel schedule and the pay. The pay isn’t all that great. I wouldn’t want to do it for a living.

So, again, the talent pool probably isn’t that deep.

  56. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Hey Coach!
    The answer is Smith!!!!!!

  57. I think if you’ve got 3 players sitting there at #11 that are rated pretty close to one another you would go for need vs the fans but I don’t think that’s always the case when teams pick. I think some teams seeing social media think of tickets and butts in the seats before they think of anything else.

  58. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it wouldn’t surprise me if Mayfield’s sitting there at 11 that we take him

    • For me, the arrest video and the crotch grab are too much. I wonder how much else there is we don’t know about.

Just like with Foster last year and his issues off the field as well as the Combine thing and now his issues have resurfaced I believe Mayfield to be too much of a risk. If someone else wants to take him because of his “moxie” then so be it but I wouldn’t touch the kid.

If you miss, oh well, but if you waste a 1st on this guy and it blows up in your face then you’re the screwup Miami Dolphins again.

  59. I really wish we’d trade Parker because, to me, he’s a pimple on the ass of the offense. But, if you want to give him one more chance because he’s not been healthy and because he’s still on his rookie contract then, okay.

As long as he’s not penciled in as a starter then give him another chance. But, let him earn it. Don’t let where he was drafted or his “projection” of what he could be dictate or influence the fact that he starts over someone else. He has to earn it just like everyone else.

If he’s not putting in the work and doing what he needs to do to stay in football shape then you put him on notice like you’ve done with other players.

… or Jones … either one, it’s just that Jones has had more INTs and even pick 6’s, so I think of him as more of a cover guy, and TJ seems even bigger or could be even bigger if they need him to put on 5-8 pounds. We just don’t need two guys playing the same position i.e. traditional SS). Somebody needs to be playing center field.

Alternatively, and this might be better, put Lippet in centerfield or alternate Xavien and him out there, because both of them have serious ball skills. WE NEED MORE INTs.

I’d love to see all 3 CBs (X, Lipps, and Tank) in at the same time against certain sets.

  64. Is it me or is mocking Vea to Miami in the 1st just because we let go of Suh lazy? Vea played well at Washington but I don’t think he stands out. He’s not a Donald type player that you look at as a dominant guy. He might be solid at the position and have a good career but I don’t see him as a dominant player who is a difference maker.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

DTs are a tough position to draft early, it takes time for a DT to develop and we just drafted 2 last year who are still on this team, CB, LBer are good picks if you’re looking for day 1 starters, i’m hoping the CB from ohio state drops to us

      • yes, and the thing is, unless you’ve got one who stands out like a Donald then taking one at #11 just to fill a need is a waste, IMO. I don’t see Vea as that type of guy. He’s never been dominant at his position.

  65. If we’re picking a DT in this draft, and we most likely will at some point, Tim Settle of Virginia Tech would be the guy I’d like to see them take. Would be interesting to see where he would go if he decided to stay in school one more year.

Pre 2018 college football season he’d probably be expected to go in the 1st rd if he had another season like he just finished with.

Suh and Landry were simply about the production didn’t merit the salary requirements. With Pouncey, I felt they didn’t want to pay him top dollar and have to baby him through the offseason workouts and in practice again, so they asked him to take a pay cut and he refused asking for his release. Those guys did not elevate this team and the cost was too much.

As for Ajayi, I think he annoyed Gase too often going off script and not blocking or receiving well enough.

If you were a HC and you weren’t feeling it with these guys you’d move on too and many teams make moves like this if the fit isn’t right. At the end of the day, every move this regime makes will be graded on wins and losses. If they don’t win, they will be replaced at some point.

As fans, let’s hope they’re right. We should try to focus on moving forward instead of constantly looking backwards saying I wouldn’t have done that. Okay great, but what’s done is done. Lou, I’m not sure where the team stands with Parker. They love his ability, but if he’s hampered too often then they might think what’s the point? His 5th year option is up soon so that will tell us more. They could not offer it and say this is your 4th year on your rookie deal and you’ll be a UFA in 2019. Gives the team time to focus on his replacement if it’s more of the same with him. I think we’ll see more WR rotation this year anyway. Maybe someone else steps up.

Ajayi wasn’t really a powerback. He ran out of shotgun quite a bit as a one or two cut and go zone runner. The power we attribute to him was not inside the tackles pounding it in there for 3-4 yards. He was brutal at the 2nd level against LBs with bad angles and against DBs. We did not have a push defenses around OL in 2016. We still sucked when we had to run. Half his yards came in 3 games that year. It was awesome and historic, but it was not an every week staple. We wanted to think that, and I bought into wanting to build around Ajayi as well, but there was more than meets the eye with him. He doesn’t run like Blount or Fournette.

ALL good points… I can’t disagree. HOWEVER, once Ajayi started making NOISE, Defenses started stacking 8 in-the-box to defend against him. And whom did that benefit? None other than TANNEHILL!

We actually got to see Tanny as the QB he CAN BE for us. Prior to Ajayi’s break out, Tannehill was nearly always facing max coverage in years prior.

IMO, it’s only fair to give Tannehill a fighting chance by augmenting our passing attack with a legit running attack. That STARTS with a good O-Line, and a RB who DEMANDS 8 in-the-box when he’s on the field.

As someone who WANTS to see Tannehill succeed, I’d point to Roger Craig (Montana), Edge James (Manning), Terrell Davis (Elway).

I actually like our moves on the interior O-Line, but they’re all 30+: I think we need to infuse some young blood this Draft. Come away with any of Billy Price, Frank Ragnow, or (pipe dream right now) Quenton Nelson, and we’re GOOD for the future.

Yes… I believe that Tannehill can get it done this year. He’s only gotten SHARPER (mentally) with his layover, but dammit if he gets injured again being his body has not been exposed to live hits in a long time.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And yes… I think that Drake could be that for us this year, coupled with old man (but AGELESS wonder!) Gore.

M13, Gase has pointed out that when we played our 3 WR sets with one TE and a RB, teams played us in base. Meaning, they covered Landry with LBs and Safeties often. He didn’t require an additional corner in nickel. People don’t like to hear that but it’s true. LBs and Safeties can run with Landry, corners can’t tackle him. So teams don’t put corners on him.

I agree opponents didn’t want to let Ajayi run wild on them, but most of his big runs were always taken to the outside at some point. Yes he had some of those inside runs where I loved that he would turn 6 into 9 by lunging and leaping for it. But once again, the running game was strong maybe 6-8 games in 2016. In 2017 with Ajayi what maybe 2-3 in 7 games?

When you start to look at how the stats play out and think about the long-term and cap involved, it’s not hard to see the team cutting bait now. There was no great impact consistently with any of the players we moved on from. Except for Landry at 6.25 catches and 63 yards PG and 5.5 TDs per season. He was very consistent at that rate. But that’s not elite stuff.

    Time to turn the page.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we draft Ridley do you think we add him to the WR group and make the competition better or do you think we could then make a draft day trade with Parker involved? The group might be getting kind of crowded then. Stills, Wilson and Amendola are going to be a part of it for sure. Grant will likely be in the mix and then it’s one or two more WRs.

Please add a pass catching TE, I don’t care if he’s a sub par blocker, he’s not going to be drafted because of that. If they develop and can be serviceable in that area, great. You can use Gray and/or a tackle at TE when you need to get a yard or two on the ground. The TE blocking all day is not really a big part of this offense. You need it at times.

I see this team wanting to be faster on offense and challenge defenses in every phase every down.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think the smart move is to trade Parker if we draft a WR high

Amendola, Wilson and Grant can all be invoked in repacking Landry’s production

All of them can be productive slot wrs
And we would have a lot of versatily in the group with Ridley, Stills, Amendola, Wilson and Grant
      A lot of speed too

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I don’t want any high picks on a WR. They can be had later.
I would have no problem trading Parker. I have no faith he’s ever going to be what he was drafted to be. IMO, he’s a perfect example why I don’t want to use high pick on WR.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“Amendola, Wilson and Grant can all be invoked in repacking Landry’s production”

We’ll get more bang for the buck, more explosive plays cheaper per. Landry has great hands and can catch improv abnormal passes when a play breaks down, but so can other players here and there. It really is about not targeting one WR 160 times and splitting it up between more options including RB and TE. The more explosive players you have on the field the better chance you have at taking it to the house.

No defense has all their positions set up to match everyone. Speed kills!

The reason that Julius Thomas was great in Denver was not just Peyton. The guy was beating corners for big gains. He’s not that fast anymore.

      • Thing about Amendola that I think is being missed is he was signed to a 2 yr deal but only his first yr is guaranteed, so he’s basically a one year guy unless he plays so well you don’t want to let him go. But, I doubt they’re going to pay him his full $12M

Lou, I’m not concerned with Amendola’s contract. I think both he and Gore were brought in for sentimental Florida reasons as well as leadership and mentors for younger players. They will both play roles but not be the main dogs.

    • What I was getting at is the idea that we’ve got too much at the wr position if we draft another guy but then you could say that if you take a wr in any round; not just the first rd and Amendola is only going to be around for a year so it’s not like he’s a young guy who good be with the team longer.

  92. I don’t think we’re taking Ridley anyway. I’m just throwing shit against the wall to see if it sticks but I’d be extremely surprised if he was the pick. I think there’s too many guys on the defensive side of the ball who could be there that they’re not going to pass up and they probably feel the same way about a wr as some others do; that one could be taken in another rd.
