2018 NFL Draft – Safeties

On the defensive side of the ball, I’ve covered the DT’s, the LB’s, and today  I’m going to look at the Safeties.  I’m going to skip DE, we’re pretty loaded at that spot, but that doesn’t mean we won’t take a DE if the right one is in the right spot, but I’m about priorities here.  Personally, I’m not convinced we’re not just fine with what we have at safety, with Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald.  McDonald missed 8 games due to his suspension, and it makes sense that it took time for him to get acclimated here.  I think McDonald could also be used in the hybrid role of S/LB in passing situations. Whether that works out or not, we’ll have to wait and see.  In the meantime, here’s the 5 guys I’d consider for us at safety.

Derwin James  6’2 215  Florida State

derwin-james-top

James is a big boy at safety, and the top ranked safety in this draft.  James started 2 years at safety for Florida St, missing most of his Sophomore season with a torn meniscus which resulted in a necessary surgery that ended his season after 2 games.  Despite being a DB, James played a fair amount near the LOS, and in his Freshman season, started 12 games,  finishing with 91 tackles (52 solo), 9.5 TFL, 2 FF’s, 2 FR’s and 4.5 sacks.  In his redshirt Sophomore season, James picked up where left off, and totaled 84 tackles (49 solo) with 2 INT’s, (1 for a TD), 5.5 TFL, and 11 passes defensed.  He is expected to be that hybrid S/LB who can cover TE’s, but that remains to be seen.  James tested very well at the combine, running a fast 4.47 40, putting up 21 reps, showing a sick 40″ vertical, and he also has long arms and big hands.  James is team leader, he’s a very hard worker who comes in and studies film on weekends.  He checks off most of the boxes you look for in a player.  James is the highest rated safety on NFL.com at 6.44.  He’s a top 15 pick for sure, and may be in  consideration for us, depending upon who else is also available.

******************************************************************************

Justin Reid  6’1 204  Stanford

NCAA Football: Stanford at Southern California

While James is a hybrid S/LB type of player, Reid could be the FS type of player we can use.  Pairing him with Reshad Jones would be some duo.  The midichlorians are strong with this one, his brother is Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, formerly of the 49ers.  Reid started his Freshman year in 9 games, and also started every game at S in his Sophomore season.  Reid really came into his own his Junior season, totaling 94 tackles (54 solo), 6.5 TFL, 1 sack, 5 INT’s and 1 FR.  He could be the true back end safety that would allow Jones to help out more in run support.  Reid has the instincts to be a FS, but he’s physical enough to play SS. Reid had an excellent combine, running a 4.4 flat in the 40, putting up 16 reps, showing off a nice 36.5″ vertical, and putting us some very quick 20 YD and 3 cone drill times.  He would be a nice fit here, but the problem is, he’s not worthy of the #11 pick, and I think TE should be our target in RD 2,  and he most likely will be gone late 1st RD anyway.  Rated at

*****************************************************************************

Terrell Edmunds  6’0 217  Virginia Tech

Terrell-Edmunds-GT-game_1510691719241_11021202_ver1.0_640_360

If we don’t take Ferrell’s son Tremaine, maybe we can come away with his other son, Terrell?  Edmunds was a 3 YR starter at VaTech, and his Junior year, he actually started every game at LB.  He finished the season with 101 tackles (52 solo), 4.5 TFL, 4 INT’s, 1 FF and 1 FR.  In his Junior year, Edmunds was switched to S and started 10 games.  He had 61 total tackles (33 solo), 2 INT’s, and 1.5 sacks.  Edmunds is a solid cover guy, and former CB, but his tackling needs a lot of work.  That’s very correctable, he’s a willing tackler, just not an effective one.  His coverage skills and athleticism are going to be what gets him drafted.  Edmunds is a team leader, and he also tested well at the combine, running a 4.47, a truly impressive 41.5″ vertical and 134″ broad jump.  This kid can sky!  Edmunds was rated at 5.54 on NFL.com.

******************************************************************************

Jessie Bates  6’1 200  Wake Forest

Wake Forest v Indiana

Jessie Bates is only a 2 YR starter, so still somewhat raw.  He redshirted his Freshman season, and really put on a show at Wake Forest, totaling 100 tackles (70 solo), 5 INT’s (2 of them for TD’s) and 1 FF.  He’s a very athletic cover man with loose hips and great change of direction ability.  He can cover in the slot, or on the back end, with good instincts, and able to read the QB.  Bates did OK at the combine, he’s not super fast, running a 4.5 40, with a decent 35.5″ vertical.  Bates was rated at 5.84 by NFL.com

*****************************************************************************

Ronnie Harrison  6’3 214  Alabama

636502441424586858-Ronnie-Harrison-Alabama-Mickey-Welsh

Harrison didn’t take the usual route to become a safety as Harrison is actually a former High School QB.  At Alabama, Harrison was a 2 YR starter, only getting limited action as a Freshman.  In his Sophomore season, Harrison had 83 tackles (56 solo) along with 2 INT’s (1 for a TD).  In total, Harrison finished up with 7 total INT’s in his 3 YR stay at Alabama in limited playing time.  He’s got great size and speed, although Harrison did not run at the combine or his pro day.  That may raise a red flag or two, but he’s known to have good speed, so not sure what’s up with that.  Harrison is known to be overly aggressive at times, and tackles too often looking to make the make hit and misses.  He needs to learn proper tackling technique.  He’s very young, only 20, and has work to do, but has a very high ceiling, even Pro Bowl potential.  Harrison is rated at 6.0 on NFL.com

***************************************************************************

So those are the 5, and honestly I went back and forth, erased a couple of times, with some different prospects, such as Godwin Igwebuike, Kyzir White, and Siran Neal.  I’m sure you have a guy I didn’t list, so let’s hear it.

M13, you lost me with your 9:25 post. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  2. mf13ss says:

    Sir Naples,

Reply waiting for you on the last page, man!

  3. naplesfan2010 says:

Sorry MF13. I was typing my reply above while you were typing your reply to yourself.
So concerning your second reply above, who in the world is left that we could overspend on in this depleted FA cohort except Earl the Pearl?

    • mf13ss says:

It’s not about FAs, it’s about TRADES… trades for players who are supposedly ‘on the shopping block’. I’ve heard of several players league-wide, but none who could provide a larger impact for us than the Pearl.

But if Seattle is truly trying to move on from the Pearl, they would likely want Draft compensation… THIS year. That would put us out of the mix, being we can’t afford him until after June 1st.

MY Phins draft was kind of just looking outside of the box with the possibility of this and that.

  4. Randy says:

    M13,
I’d take Welsh in the 3rd. In the 4th would be a decent value pick.

    • mf13ss says:

Thank you, Bro. You KNOW what I think of you when it come to the O-Line (especially Iowa), but I won’t repeat that which you seeming don’t like to be called. 😉

      #OLineGuru!!!

  5. mf13ss says:

    Randy,

SERIOUSLY, I think you ROCK, Brother!

  6. Tim Knight says:

Last year’s draft was pretty straight up. No big deals or anything.

    • mf13ss says:

I hope it stays the same this year. Mesh BPA with positional needs, and we should do just fine.

Only way I’m trading down to the mid-late 1st? To get that special TE that we’ve been missing since Randy McMichael.

  7. mf13ss says:

I’m audi. Gonna research a little more on “MH370” vs “Cicada 3301”. After which, I’m hitting the studio to lay down some piano tracks.

    GO PHINS!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

  8. Tim Knight says:

M13 and others, I know some of you guys all thing MTP is this rogue trader guy. But since the SUH signing in 2015 what crazy move has he made?

To me, since Grier became GM and Gase HC, the approach changed and it’s still in effect. No big time FAs but add players who fit. Draft BPA as it falls. You don’t always have control over that.

This is a big year for Gase and the team he’s selecting both coaches and personnel.

  9. naplesfan2010 says:

I agree about this year’s draft being completely unknown to us the fans and I think even our own FO does not know exactly what they want to do.

I read where the Dolphins are going to trade Tannehill to the Giants and take Josh Rosen, then start Osweiler until Rosen takes over at the bye week.

  10. ElephantRider says:

I’m glad this draft is so up in the air. Makes them very flexible sitting at pick 11. Nobody having a grasp on what they may do is the point.

  11. wyoming85 says:

  12. Mike E. says:

Tim – MTP did the Carroo III trade up. He also traded with Philly to get Kiko and Maxwell. Basically, every year he’s been here he’s made wacky trades. He can’t stop, and I’ll bet you right now he makes a trade in this draft in this draft too.

  13. How good is a DT who played on a 2 man D-line flanked by 2 OLB’s:

  14. Mike E. says:

Dear Wyo – I will NOT take ANY of your players, no matter how many times I trade up or down!
Josh Allen, Roquan Smith, Tremaine Edmunds, Billy Price, Maurice Hurst, Leighton Vander Esch, Hayden Hurst, Shaquem Griffin, Jessie Bates

    Love, M.T.P

It’s my hope every year that they are way smarter than I am!
    ****************************************
    How’s that been working out?

  16. Mike E. says:

Wyo – I always hope they get it right, whether it’s players I wanted or not. I wasn’t thrilled with Charles Harris last year, there were other players I wanted more than him, but he can definitely get better (That shouldn’t be too difficult considering what he did last year). I want Harris to have a year like Godchaux had last year, really make a showing, be out there a lot making plays.

  17. Mike E. says:

Wyo, Lou – Justin Tuck was also light in the pants, but he was lights out a great DT/DE for the Giants.

    • I’m just looking at it from the point of view of how good would a guy playing DT need to be doing what Green did at USC when he’s “undersized” for a DT, weight wise, and he played on a 2 man line flanked by two LB’s. that’s got to be a tough situation for ANY DT.

  18. wyoming85 says:

    • why is this a thing? seriously. what starting qb doesn’t stay involved on the sidelines during their team’s season when he’s injured?

    • stangerx says:

Hard not to have the impression that Tanny is hard working, smart and a general good guy who has be the #1 pick for the Dolphin least likely to get in a late night fight at a strip club…..but then the same could have been said about John Beck.

      • exactly. Beck was the first to arrive and the last to leave and impressed a lot of people with his work ethic but just didn’t have what it took. that only gets you so far. but, hey, let’s just pencil in our starter again this year.

  20. olddolphan says:

JUST ANOTHER day in paradise today. Hi near 80, low near 60 with a nice breeze. SOOO-O-O glad this weekend I’ll spend at home (first in several weekends).
    —————–
SOMEWHAT bored by all the speculation about Miami’s first pick. I’ll be disappointed if O-Line is NOT priority #1 in this Fins draft. And, by many accounts, the kid Ragnow, a stud O-Lineman from Arkansas, should be available when Miami picks @ #11. TAKE HIM FOR CHRISTs’ SAKE!!!!!!! —Ya, ya, I know, we’ve already addressed this team’s O-Line thru free agency and/or trades. WELL, if you believed we’ve plugged ALL our O-Line needs already then you probably believe Stormy Daniels is a virgin! We are NOT CLOSE to having an above average NFL O-Line at this point. Throw in the usual 1-2 serious injuries to O-Linemen and, by my calculations, we’re AT LEAST TWO GUYS SHORT OF A FULL DECK!!! YOU’D THINK the “Doofus Brigade” would have learned their lesson last season, when our collapsing O-Line got our QB’s on the DL and messed up our passing game due to a LACK of enough time to throw the ball on many occasions. This lack of enough time caused us to over use SHORT yardage passes, and, of course, DB’s knew this so they often played right in the faces of our WRs.
GETTING THE BEST AVAILABLE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN in round 1 will alleviate this problem. Getting another solid guy in round 3 will put us in much better shape. Hope T-Bomb, Grier and Gase have already figured this out. But, then, I said basically THE SAME THING A YEAR AGO, didn’t I???
    —————-
Y’all have a great day. May goodness bless you with a few days of really outstanding weather!

  21. Mike E. says:

Lou – How can you not pencil Tannehill as the starter this year? Even if we draft a QB at #11, Tannehill would have to beaten out by the rookie. Would you rather Osweiler or Fales be penciled in?

  22. Tim Knight says:

Mike, so you don’t think Grier was in on those trades and it was just MTP on his own?

    • Mike E. says:

We’ll never know Tim, but it has MTP’s MO written all over it. That’s the problem, as long as he’s there, I’ll never be sure whether he’s pulling the strings or Grier is, or both of them together.

      • Tim Knight says:

Well they say all the time it’s a collaborative effort to get Gase the players he wants. Grier puts the draft board together, both Tannenbaum and Gase have said that. I think all three discuss the moves they make. I don’t think it’s just a MTP thing.

  23. stangerx says:

Mob poster (past or present) most and least likely to get in a late night fight at a strip club:

Most — Rock…especially if Ravens fans are in the club 🙂
Least — Brian NY (would have said Ken, but then there is the Hulk thing)

    • Least would be me because I don’t do strip clubs

      • stangerx says:

You can get pretty fiesty though….so that is like a CB not giving up a reception cause he was sitting on the bench.

    • wyoming85 says:

There are other men in the stirp clubs?

      I never noticed!

    • Ken says:

I was in a strip club one time that was raided by police. They lined us up against the wall and pointed shot guns at as then some officer came to each one of us with a photo asking if we had this guy. They left after about 10 minutes then we returned to the arts

      • Ken says:

Actually Stanger and Son may know of the establishment: Burt’s Place in Bridgeport

      • stangerx says:

Don’t remember that name but B-port was where the clubs were back in my prime time days. Then one summer is grad school caught one in Atlanta…talk about a different world. Had no idea before then how seedy they were.

      • Ken says:

Burt’s was pretty seedy. Not in a good part of town and had a steel door that I don’t think a bazooka could have penetrated

  24. Mike E. says:

Lou – I didn’t say anything close to Tannehill can’t be beaten out by a rookie, just that he should be penciled in as the starter. I believe pencils have erasers, no?

  25. Seriously get real here for a second. If the team were going to use draft capital to trade up in order to get either someone like Mayfield or Rosen they’re doing so with the idea that their newly acquired qb is going to start for them pretty much immediately or soon enough. Not sit behind Tannehill for a season to learn.

    That’s just ridiculous.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’re trading up for a QB. If one falls they could take him. I think it’s more likely we target one of the 2nd tier guys.

      • I don’t think we are either but it’s the idea that if we did that we would just be handing Tannehill the job anyway which just isn’t true. We take one early he’s not there to hold a clipboard for a year.

      • Tim Knight says:

Sure a rookie QB even taken high could sit for a year. The team is more confident in Tannehill than you are. You’re making your case based on what you would do and that’s not how it’s going to go down.

If the rookie performs off the charts and beats Tannehill out okay, fair enough. I don’t think that will happen. The rookie QB needs to learn the offense and has no game experience. I’d say Tannehill will start the season and if he’s not playing well than you could see a change.

  26. Ken says:

We haven’t heard from Steve or Piggy since they met up last night. Anyone thinking Hangover?

  27. Mike E. says:

Lou – You’re wrong – I’m all in on a QB if they want to draft one at #11, but I think it’s pretty obvious that he has to beat Tannehill to start. If whover the rookie is plays lights out, I’m all for him starting over Tannehill if he plays better. Why wouldn’t I? I’m not attached to Tannehill, I root for him because he’s been our QB, but I can easily root for someone else too.

  28. Ken says:

2 weeks of radiation down 4 more to go but the fatigue is starting to kick my ass. I can barely keep my eyes open

  29. stangerx says:

So many would haves would have to happen…..for a rostered and healthy Tanny not to start, on opening day at least. Whether a healthy him would be behind center at end of season is a different subject. And that includes if his only competitor is Osweiler.

  30. Ken says:

If we move up to draft a QB then yes most likely Tannehill does not start. If one falls to us at 11 then I think it’s an open competition to see who starts this season

    • stangerx says:

I think, or at least hoping, that if we move up other than a spot or two that it means Tanny is on another team. Good long-range plan for us and good for him.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think it would be a competition either way. Tannehill would have the edge though knowing the offense and having game experience. I also don’t think any of these rookie QBs are slam dunks to start for their teams. Whatever QB CLE drafts, Taylor is likely to start and then it will depend on his performance whether he keeps the job or not. I think it will be the same way with Tannehill.

  31. manitobafinfan says:

Come on, everyone knows if we trade up for a QB he will be a bust ,stay on bench except STs get suspended for his first 3 seasons . Then get cut and become a superstar for Seattle 😘

  32. wyoming85 says:

    Ken!
You the Man! Be the man!

    • stangerx says:

Grant can absolutely fly….and not talking about running. Reminds me of Brent Grimes without the Miko baggage. Not saying he is our best wideout, but he is my favorite.

  33. Mike E. says:

LOL Lou – You had me going there!

KEN; HANG IN THERE, BUDDY. It’s only a matter of time until the REAL HULK RETURNS!! –We all think the world of you!!

  37. wyoming85 says:

  38. naplesfan2010 says:

So we trade Tannehill to the Giants for their 1st and we give them our better 4th as well.
he sits behind Eli while Eli shows he’s done, and Tannehill begins to take over after they open up like 1-5, and Tannehill resurrects his career by becoming really good in NY for 5-7 years after that. Eli retires at the end of 2018.

Meanwhile, we draft Rosen. Osweiler starts the year but he goes like 2-4 into t he bye and Rosen takes over. He becomes a superstar and takes us to the Big Dance in 2019.

That is the way it’s gonna happen.

  39. Randy says:

Tanny starts if healthy. I’d guess even if they move up to get a guy, Tanny starts. Unless the rookie comes in and just blows people’s minds in practice and everything, you have no problem letting him sit a few games or whatever. Make him earn it…..and let him learn. All these draft QBs could use some time to learn anyway. The best for the team is if both a rookie and Tanny perform well.
    ***
With all that, the team is gonna want to see Tanny get out there and perform to see if he can play. You’d think they would want him to get a lot of reps in the preseason….unless they’re protecting that injury. Plus, I guess we’re changing the offense, again? Your starter needs the reps. A rookie may not get a ton of snaps.
    ****
Does anybody know? Do they practice with 4 units going at once, so basically your starters and backups are getting equal reps?

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think you can protect an injury. A guy is good to go or not. I think Tannehill will get the normal reps in the PS he always would have. He’s already been cleared for all offseason activities starting this month. He needs the reps.

  40. Randy says:

    Hey Ken,
Best wishes for you, bud. Luckily you’re used to Gamma rays so those treatments are like a tanning booth!

  41. Randy says:

    Tim,
I meant if they think he isn’t quite ready to go full speed by the time practice time comes. They may want to limit his snaps if he’s not completely healed. I don’t know if off-season activity means he’s 100% healed and ready to go.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t really know either, just saying he was cleared for all offseason activities. I’m sure the team isn’t going to push him hard early. I was talking about PS in August. He’s gotta get some game action.

  42. Rockphin says:

Oh, but he won’t be taking ANY of the players you want, you should know that by now. 🙂

    ROFLMAO

    So true.

  43. Rockphin says:

The best possible scenario would be drafting a guy who turns out really good who can beat out Tannehill but also having antenna Hill play very well so that there would be trade value for him next year

  44. Rockphin says:

I haven’t been to a strip club in 15 years. Last time I went was with my ex-wife and her girlfriends because they needed somebody to get them in (a man)

Round 4 Pick 30: Jones, Jamarco, OT, Ohio State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 35: Thomas, Roc, RB, Jacksonville State (A)
Round 7 Pick 5: Atkins, John, DT, Georgia (A+)
    Round 7 Pick 11: Pineiro, Eddy, K, Florida (A+)

    • Mike E. says:

M-T-P just called me to let me know he’s made a compilation of all your drafts, and he’s certain he won’t be drafting any of those guys. He also told me he doesn’t understand why I call him M-T-P

  47. Mike E. says:

    Cespedes!

  48. Why is it a forgone conclusion that Tannehill knows the offense going into this season? If Gase is going to do what I think he’s going to do to this offense then Tannehill doesn’t have anymore of a head start than anyone else coming in.

I doubt this offense is going to look much the same as it did in the past and if it does look the same then we’re in for another long season.

Not to mention that he’s got new personnel on the offense he’s going to need to get acclimated to and we all know he struggles a bit working with new people. He’s got a brand new center, some new wr’s and new TE’s he’s going to need to get used to.

Going to be an interesting camp.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think you’re off on your first point. Lou, I mean you make it seem like Tannehill knows nothing and can’t play. Geez! Let up a bit. The team supports him. You not supporting him isn’t changing that. If his knee is stable he will start opening day. Put it in the bank.

      • How am I off on my first point? The offense is probably going to be different this year from what we’re used to seeing meaning he’s got to learn it just like anyone else. Everyone seems to think he’s got some kind of advantage because he knows the offense and that’s just not true if Gase does to it what I think he’ll do.

Now, if we stay with the same mediocre play calling/scheme on the offense we’ve had in Gase’s first two seasons then, yes, Tannehill knows the offense.

But, again, he doesn’t know all his personnel like he did in the past. So, AGAIN, he has no advantage in this offense over anyone else.

Not saying he doesn’t know anything or having experience doesn’t count for something. Just saying that he would have no advantage over anyone if it’s a new offense. They would ALL need to learn it; including him.

  49. Tim Knight says:

I think all the Tannehill questioning from the outside will drive him to prove them wrong. He knows he has to prove his status, he can’t just act like it’s his throne. He’ll compete like all players have been doing their entire lives to get to where they’re at.

My only concern with Tannehill is if his knee is stable, not who he is as a QB.

Let’s see, we have Tanny for at least the next 2 years, we have Brock at least one because his 800k contract is guaranteed, we also have Fales who is one of Gases boys.
now we’re going to take our most valuable pick; or even better take multiple picks to trade up and draft a forth qb.
the botom-line is we wont draft a QB this year and if by the remote chance we do there’s no way in he’ll sniff the field for the next 2 years or beat out Tannehill. JMO

    • Considering the fact that Tannehill was a 3rd rd prospect at best himself when he came out the team could draft a few qb’s after the 1st whether it be Rudolph or some of the other qb’s and they’d all have a pretty good shot at beating out the mediocre one.

Guys, we’re NOT trading up this year.

  53. CavalierKong says:

I’m sending positive west coast vibes out your way, Ken. I know you’ll stay strong and kick its ass, bud.

  54. Tim Knight says:

Lou, the offense is not gong to change in language and concepts. What will change is what we run more often based on personnel. Tannehill knows all of it already. So do Fales and Osweiler. The rookie would have to be really good to unseat Tannehill to start opening day.

Like I said earlier, if we did draft a QB wherever, he would have to be off the charts good with no game experience. I’m pretty sure Shula and his staff knew Marino was a better passer than Woodley but still didn’t start the season with Marino. Challenge the incumbent to keep the job, competition is good and Tannehill knows he has to prove himself. This might be exactly what this team needs. Motivation and examples of great competition.

Lots of players will be competing for playing time in quite a few areas this season. Some new coaches and new personnel – also getting some guys back from IR. The draft will play a big role in what the 53 looks like. I’m excited!! Every player on the team is on notice. Ajayi, Landry, Suh and Pouncey send that message. We can lose without you.

    • LOL. You’ve got a lot of faith in someone who’s never done anything to earn it. “He would have to be off the charts good with no game experience”?

Tannehill isn’t that good. You bring in real competition for him he’s going to fold like an origami dragon. There’s a few qb’s we could take early enough who I could see making him expendable.

      • ocalarob says:

Tannehill is serviceable, he needs a running game to support him, you cant go by the past as he really hasn’t had any good OC’s to help him, Lazor was a fck’n moron,

  55. ocalarob says:

Why would Gase want a QB, he’s got 3 in the house, he had Osweiler in DEN and Fales in CHI, those two guys have familiarity with Gase, and Tanny’s the starter.

I highly doubt we even take and undrafted FA rookie QB much less spend a pick on one, That position looks to be sewed up.

if their looking at QB’s you can bet it’s a smoke screen

    • lol. that’s a good one. yeah, why would Gase even want a qb when the team doesn’t have a franchise qb at this time? yep, let’s just keep rolling with that piece of shit that got us here.

      • ocalarob says:

You’re looking at the past like it’s all tannys fault, I don’t buy that, and while he’s no Joe Montana I still think he’s serviceable.
Bill Lazor ran a pass on every down offense, a lot of the failures of the past have to do more with the stupid offensive philosophies than it did with one player.

      • CavalierKong says:

Do you think Gase was BSing when he said part of the reason he took the Miami job was Tannehill? Gase seems to be pretty straight forward when talking about players. Then Tanny put up his best season to date under Gase. Why would Gase be down on Tanny?

I kinda agree with Rob about it being a smokescreen, or maybe it’s due diligence. Personally, I think we’ll take a QB day 2 or 3 to develop if we take one.

      • I’m not saying it’s all his fault. What I’m saying is if you’ve got a qb that needs everything to be perfect for him then he’s not really that good, is he?

Therefore, when people say things like a rookie would need to be off the charts good to compete with him and win the starting position it’s not a logical argument.

      • ocalarob says:

if they do waste a late pick on a QB i’m sure he’ll just be on the Practice Squad, I’d bet we have our 3 QBs set for next year

      • And that’s another thing. How in the hell did he put up his best season to date under Gase. That’s not even close to being true. He had a much better season under Philbin and Lazor.

  56. ocalarob says:

take the CB Ward or the LBer whats his name @ 11

  57. CavalierKong says:

I certainly hope the offense at least LOOKS different this year. Last year was putrid. It’s still going to come down to the oline and the changes made there. We’ve certainly added enough beard to be dominant..

    • ocalarob says:

I think the offense will look great due to the fact we have Frank Gore

      • CavalierKong says:

Gore is a nice addition. I’ve watched him his whole career in San Fran. He’s the exact type of power back you covet, and I think he’ll complement Drake perfectly.

      • CavalierKong says:

His age and probably drop off in ability are the only possible downside. I didn’t watch him once he went to Indy.

      • ocalarob says:

he was still a stud in Indy, I’m hoping he can maintain hid durability

I doubt any QB that WE could logically draft could beat out Osweiller, Tanny will be the QB in 2018 barring injury

  59. Ken says:

Thanks for the prayers and positive vibes from all. I just got to get through the next 4 weeks and get this all in the rear view mirror.

  60. ocalarob says:

I believe Tannehill had his best QB rating in 2016, and that stat tells all.

  61. mf13ss says:

    Ken,

You KNOW that I’ve been praying for ya every night, my man. I fundamentally BELIEVE in the power of prayer, Hulk.

    LOVE YA, MAN!

  62. CavalierKong says:

    Lou,

The Tanny we saw play in 2016 was easily the best version we’ve seen. He was deft on his deep ball for the 1st time ever, was solid all around, and put up his best rating before getting injured. I’m actually surprised you would dispute that.

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s what makes you a Tanne-lover, not based on giving him his due. LOL

      • CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I try to stay away from the labels. I’m still not sold on Tanny, but I’d like to see another year under Gase. I’m not sure he’s good enough in the clutch, he needs to get better in the pocket under pressure, and we still don’t know how he’ll come back from injury. The run threat is a big part of his game. But, I will be shocked if we are actually looking to trade up for one of the QBs this ear.

      • I’d like to see the team bring in legit competition for him THIS year. He’s going North of 30 coming off an ACL.

So even if he finally does put it all together this year and we have another qb who’s capable of running the offense it puts us ahead of the game rather than being behind the eight ball having to draft a qb becoming a MUST.

      • CavalierKong says:

Lou, I can get on board with that perspective. I’d be surprised to see it happen this draft, but I see where you are coming from, and the Fins have at least presented the possibility they may go that route.

  63. wyoming85 says:

  64. ocalarob says:

If Tannehill can get to 100 in QB rating you can bet this team will be playoff bound probably with a bye week.

  65. Ken says:

I am Tannehill fan and I believe we need to draft a QB this year. Not necessarily in the first round but someone who we can develop into a solid backup and or possibly develop into a starter someday. Osweiler is crap and Fales is really untested

  66. Ken says:

I also think the fact that we met with Benkert and Falk is an indication that we are looking at 2nd tier QBs pretty hard

  67. mf13ss says:

I see that Tannehill has been “penciled in” as our QB1… and Gase says that with a straight face.

We’re NOT trading up, guys. Gase is GONE if we don’t get a winning record this year.

  68. Ken says:

I actually think drafting a rookie QB gives Gase some protection this year. It is the one reason I think a trade up is not out of the question although I still think it is unlikely

    • CavalierKong says:

I think a number of things other than final record could factor into Gase being here another year or not. I could see us going 6-10, but getting leveled by injuries as one example where he stays.

If the team is horribly undisciplined, under-performs, and has a bad record, then he may be gone, but personally I think it would have to be pretty bad. My estimate is Gase has two firm years left, although if his playcalling is as up and down bad this year, and the offense doesn’t make any strides I would like to see him go at the end of this one.

WTF man!!!? So the 10-6 season doesn’t count? Dude, do more speed and less ludes. LOL
    ————-
Should the miracle year of Tony Sparano’s rookie 2008 season (11-5) have counted? He followed it up with 3 consecutive losing seasons… hence his firing.

Look, I’m NOT looking for a fight… but business is BUSINESS.

  70. CavalierKong says:

Wow, thinking about the glorious 2008 season, I can’t believe that was 10 flippin years ago.

  71. Tim Knight says:

It’s gonna be a very different team than we had 2-3 years ago this year.

Click on EXP to see the age of the team and it’s going to get younger with the draft and UDFA.

Not as old as you thought eh? 😉

  72. pheloniusphish says:

Why do y’all try to talk to Lou about Tannehill?

  73. wyoming85 says:

  74. Randy says:

We need to find a running game and get this OL to play well. They don’t have to be great, but they need to be consistently solid. The aspect of our offense that was much better in 2016 was our running game. Our passing game was pretty much the same as it had been. We threw less, but we scored about the same as we had been.
    ***
People keep saying Tanny will be fine with good talent and play around him, but I haven’t seen this good talent and/or play. Other than 2016, we have not had an effective running game forever. It has to change. All this BS about spreading the ball around doesn’t mean shit if we can’t find a way to run effectively. I’m so tired of seeing the same shit year after year. Blah, blah, blah….13 WR screens. 3rd and 7 constantly. Thanks!

  75. Randy says:

I was so confused by Wyoming posting a pic of herd’s daughter, at first.

    That’s awesome, herd. 😄

    • herdfan says:

IKR? You expect cheerleader pics from him. 😂

And thanks. I’m not at all that knowledgeable about all this horse stuff but apparently she’s doing great!

  76. Randy says:

    herd,
But now the real question. You have a twitter account? I’m not sure how this makes me feel about you now.

I meant he had better seasons under Lazor.
    ___________________________________________

LOL, how can you say that????

first of all he only played 12 complete games in 2016, under Gase he had a better QBR than he ever has and oh BTW The stat that counts the most….he went 8-5 on games he started, we went 10-6 and made the playoffs!

under Lazor he never had a winning season

  78. steveccnv says:

Plan A for me is Minkah or Derwin @11, then move TJ to OLB, and I think the D is set, just need a late round DT or post June 1st cut to fill up the 4th DT. I really can’t see doing much else, because the 3rd LB doesn’t play that much, Kiko would be #3.

  79. Ken says:

Steve still hung over from hanging with Piggy. He doesn’t even realize he is posting on the old article
