On the defensive side of the ball, I’ve covered the DT’s, the LB’s, and today I’m going to look at the Safeties. I’m going to skip DE, we’re pretty loaded at that spot, but that doesn’t mean we won’t take a DE if the right one is in the right spot, but I’m about priorities here. Personally, I’m not convinced we’re not just fine with what we have at safety, with Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald. McDonald missed 8 games due to his suspension, and it makes sense that it took time for him to get acclimated here. I think McDonald could also be used in the hybrid role of S/LB in passing situations. Whether that works out or not, we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, here’s the 5 guys I’d consider for us at safety.
Derwin James 6’2 215 Florida State
James is a big boy at safety, and the top ranked safety in this draft. James started 2 years at safety for Florida St, missing most of his Sophomore season with a torn meniscus which resulted in a necessary surgery that ended his season after 2 games. Despite being a DB, James played a fair amount near the LOS, and in his Freshman season, started 12 games, finishing with 91 tackles (52 solo), 9.5 TFL, 2 FF’s, 2 FR’s and 4.5 sacks. In his redshirt Sophomore season, James picked up where left off, and totaled 84 tackles (49 solo) with 2 INT’s, (1 for a TD), 5.5 TFL, and 11 passes defensed. He is expected to be that hybrid S/LB who can cover TE’s, but that remains to be seen. James tested very well at the combine, running a fast 4.47 40, putting up 21 reps, showing a sick 40″ vertical, and he also has long arms and big hands. James is team leader, he’s a very hard worker who comes in and studies film on weekends. He checks off most of the boxes you look for in a player. James is the highest rated safety on NFL.com at 6.44. He’s a top 15 pick for sure, and may be in consideration for us, depending upon who else is also available.

Justin Reid 6’1 204 Stanford
While James is a hybrid S/LB type of player, Reid could be the FS type of player we can use. Pairing him with Reshad Jones would be some duo. The midichlorians are strong with this one, his brother is Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, formerly of the 49ers. Reid started his Freshman year in 9 games, and also started every game at S in his Sophomore season. Reid really came into his own his Junior season, totaling 94 tackles (54 solo), 6.5 TFL, 1 sack, 5 INT’s and 1 FR. He could be the true back end safety that would allow Jones to help out more in run support. Reid has the instincts to be a FS, but he’s physical enough to play SS. Reid had an excellent combine, running a 4.4 flat in the 40, putting up 16 reps, showing off a nice 36.5″ vertical, and putting us some very quick 20 YD and 3 cone drill times. He would be a nice fit here, but the problem is, he’s not worthy of the #11 pick, and I think TE should be our target in RD 2, and he most likely will be gone late 1st RD anyway. Rated at

Terrell Edmunds 6’0 217 Virginia Tech
If we don’t take Ferrell’s son Tremaine, maybe we can come away with his other son, Terrell? Edmunds was a 3 YR starter at VaTech, and his Junior year, he actually started every game at LB. He finished the season with 101 tackles (52 solo), 4.5 TFL, 4 INT’s, 1 FF and 1 FR. In his Junior year, Edmunds was switched to S and started 10 games. He had 61 total tackles (33 solo), 2 INT’s, and 1.5 sacks. Edmunds is a solid cover guy, and former CB, but his tackling needs a lot of work. That’s very correctable, he’s a willing tackler, just not an effective one. His coverage skills and athleticism are going to be what gets him drafted. Edmunds is a team leader, and he also tested well at the combine, running a 4.47, a truly impressive 41.5″ vertical and 134″ broad jump. This kid can sky! Edmunds was rated at 5.54 on NFL.com.

Jessie Bates 6’1 200 Wake Forest
Jessie Bates is only a 2 YR starter, so still somewhat raw. He redshirted his Freshman season, and really put on a show at Wake Forest, totaling 100 tackles (70 solo), 5 INT’s (2 of them for TD’s) and 1 FF. He’s a very athletic cover man with loose hips and great change of direction ability. He can cover in the slot, or on the back end, with good instincts, and able to read the QB. Bates did OK at the combine, he’s not super fast, running a 4.5 40, with a decent 35.5″ vertical. Bates was rated at 5.84 by NFL.com

Ronnie Harrison 6’3 214 Alabama
Harrison didn’t take the usual route to become a safety as Harrison is actually a former High School QB. At Alabama, Harrison was a 2 YR starter, only getting limited action as a Freshman. In his Sophomore season, Harrison had 83 tackles (56 solo) along with 2 INT’s (1 for a TD). In total, Harrison finished up with 7 total INT’s in his 3 YR stay at Alabama in limited playing time. He’s got great size and speed, although Harrison did not run at the combine or his pro day. That may raise a red flag or two, but he’s known to have good speed, so not sure what’s up with that. Harrison is known to be overly aggressive at times, and tackles too often looking to make the make hit and misses. He needs to learn proper tackling technique. He’s very young, only 20, and has work to do, but has a very high ceiling, even Pro Bowl potential. Harrison is rated at 6.0 on NFL.com

It’s not about FAs, it’s about TRADES… trades for players who are supposedly ‘on the shopping block’. I’ve heard of several players league-wide, but none who could provide a larger impact for us than the Pearl.
But if Seattle is truly trying to move on from the Pearl, they would likely want Draft compensation… THIS year. That would put us out of the mix, being we can’t afford him until after June 1st.

To me, since Grier became GM and Gase HC, the approach changed and it’s still in effect. No big time FAs but add players who fit. Draft BPA as it falls. You don’t always have control over that.
This is a big year for Gase and the team he’s selecting both coaches and personnel.
I agree about this year’s draft being completely unknown to us the fans and I think even our own FO does not know exactly what they want to do.
I read where the Dolphins are going to trade Tannehill to the Giants and take Josh Rosen, then start Osweiler until Rosen takes over at the bye week.

Wyo – I always hope they get it right, whether it’s players I wanted or not. I wasn’t thrilled with Charles Harris last year, there were other players I wanted more than him, but he can definitely get better (That shouldn’t be too difficult considering what he did last year). I want Harris to have a year like Godchaux had last year, really make a showing, be out there a lot making plays.

SOMEWHAT bored by all the speculation about Miami’s first pick. I’ll be disappointed if O-Line is NOT priority #1 in this Fins draft. And, by many accounts, the kid Ragnow, a stud O-Lineman from Arkansas, should be available when Miami picks @ #11. TAKE HIM FOR CHRISTs’ SAKE!!!!!!! —Ya, ya, I know, we’ve already addressed this team’s O-Line thru free agency and/or trades. WELL, if you believed we’ve plugged ALL our O-Line needs already then you probably believe Stormy Daniels is a virgin! We are NOT CLOSE to having an above average NFL O-Line at this point. Throw in the usual 1-2 serious injuries to O-Linemen and, by my calculations, we’re AT LEAST TWO GUYS SHORT OF A FULL DECK!!! YOU’D THINK the “Doofus Brigade” would have learned their lesson last season, when our collapsing O-Line got our QB’s on the DL and messed up our passing game due to a LACK of enough time to throw the ball on many occasions. This lack of enough time caused us to over use SHORT yardage passes, and, of course, DB’s knew this so they often played right in the faces of our WRs.
GETTING THE BEST AVAILABLE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN in round 1 will alleviate this problem. Getting another solid guy in round 3 will put us in much better shape. Hope T-Bomb, Grier and Gase have already figured this out. But, then, I said basically THE SAME THING A YEAR AGO, didn’t I???

We’ll never know Tim, but it has MTP’s MO written all over it. That’s the problem, as long as he’s there, I’ll never be sure whether he’s pulling the strings or Grier is, or both of them together.
Well they say all the time it’s a collaborative effort to get Gase the players he wants. Grier puts the draft board together, both Tannenbaum and Gase have said that. I think all three discuss the moves they make. I don’t think it’s just a MTP thing.

If the team were going to use draft capital to trade up in order to get either someone like Mayfield or Rosen they’re doing so with the idea that their newly acquired qb is going to start for them pretty much immediately or soon enough. Not sit behind Tannehill for a season to learn.

One week to the half way point.
So many would haves would have to happen…..for a rostered and healthy Tanny not to start, on opening day at least. Whether a healthy him would be behind center at end of season is a different subject. And that includes if his only competitor is Osweiler.
If we move up to draft a QB then yes most likely Tannehill does not start. If one falls to us at 11 then I think it’s an open competition to see who starts this season
I think, or at least hoping, that if we move up other than a spot or two that it means Tanny is on another team. Good long-range plan for us and good for him.
I think it would be a competition either way. Tannehill would have the edge though knowing the offense and having game experience. I also don’t think any of these rookie QBs are slam dunks to start for their teams. Whatever QB CLE drafts, Taylor is likely to start and then it will depend on his performance whether he keeps the job or not. I think it will be the same way with Tannehill.

Meanwhile, we draft Rosen. Osweiler starts the year but he goes like 2-4 into t he bye and Rosen takes over. He becomes a superstar and takes us to the Big Dance in 2019.
That is the way it’s gonna happen.
Tanny starts if healthy. I’d guess even if they move up to get a guy, Tanny starts. Unless the rookie comes in and just blows people’s minds in practice and everything, you have no problem letting him sit a few games or whatever. Make him earn it…..and let him learn. All these draft QBs could use some time to learn anyway. The best for the team is if both a rookie and Tanny perform well.

I don’t think you can protect an injury. A guy is good to go or not. I think Tannehill will get the normal reps in the PS he always would have. He’s already been cleared for all offseason activities starting this month. He needs the reps.

I don’t really know either, just saying he was cleared for all offseason activities. I’m sure the team isn’t going to push him hard early. I was talking about PS in August. He’s gotta get some game action.

Why is it a forgone conclusion that Tannehill knows the offense going into this season? If Gase is going to do what I think he’s going to do to this offense then Tannehill doesn’t have anymore of a head start than anyone else coming in.
I doubt this offense is going to look much the same as it did in the past and if it does look the same then we’re in for another long season.
Not to mention that he’s got new personnel on the offense he’s going to need to get acclimated to and we all know he struggles a bit working with new people. He’s got a brand new center, some new wr’s and new TE’s he’s going to need to get used to.
Going to be an interesting camp.
I think you’re off on your first point. Lou, I mean you make it seem like Tannehill knows nothing and can’t play. Geez! Let up a bit. The team supports him. You not supporting him isn’t changing that. If his knee is stable he will start opening day. Put it in the bank.
How am I off on my first point? The offense is probably going to be different this year from what we’re used to seeing meaning he’s got to learn it just like anyone else. Everyone seems to think he’s got some kind of advantage because he knows the offense and that’s just not true if Gase does to it what I think he’ll do.
Now, if we stay with the same mediocre play calling/scheme on the offense we’ve had in Gase’s first two seasons then, yes, Tannehill knows the offense.
But, again, he doesn’t know all his personnel like he did in the past. So, AGAIN, he has no advantage in this offense over anyone else.
Not saying he doesn’t know anything or having experience doesn’t count for something. Just saying that he would have no advantage over anyone if it’s a new offense. They would ALL need to learn it; including him.
I think all the Tannehill questioning from the outside will drive him to prove them wrong. He knows he has to prove his status, he can’t just act like it’s his throne. He’ll compete like all players have been doing their entire lives to get to where they’re at.
My only concern with Tannehill is if his knee is stable, not who he is as a QB.

Lou, the offense is not gong to change in language and concepts. What will change is what we run more often based on personnel. Tannehill knows all of it already. So do Fales and Osweiler. The rookie would have to be really good to unseat Tannehill to start opening day.
Like I said earlier, if we did draft a QB wherever, he would have to be off the charts good with no game experience. I’m pretty sure Shula and his staff knew Marino was a better passer than Woodley but still didn’t start the season with Marino. Challenge the incumbent to keep the job, competition is good and Tannehill knows he has to prove himself. This might be exactly what this team needs. Motivation and examples of great competition.
Lots of players will be competing for playing time in quite a few areas this season. Some new coaches and new personnel – also getting some guys back from IR. The draft will play a big role in what the 53 looks like. I’m excited!! Every player on the team is on notice. Ajayi, Landry, Suh and Pouncey send that message. We can lose without you.

Why would Gase want a QB, he’s got 3 in the house, he had Osweiler in DEN and Fales in CHI, those two guys have familiarity with Gase, and Tanny’s the starter.

I certainly hope the offense at least LOOKS different this year. Last year was putrid. It’s still going to come down to the oline and the changes made there. We’ve certainly added enough beard to be dominant..
I think the offense will look great due to the fact we have Frank Gore
Gore is a nice addition. I’ve watched him his whole career in San Fran. He’s the exact type of power back you covet, and I think he’ll complement Drake perfectly.
His age and probably drop off in ability are the only possible downside. I didn’t watch him once he went to Indy.

I doubt any QB that WE could logically draft could beat out Osweiller, Tanny will be the QB in 2018 barring injury

The Tanny we saw play in 2016 was easily the best version we’ve seen. He was deft on his deep ball for the 1st time ever, was solid all around, and put up his best rating before getting injured. I’m actually surprised you would dispute that.

Yeah, I try to stay away from the labels. I’m still not sold on Tanny, but I’d like to see another year under Gase. I’m not sure he’s good enough in the clutch, he needs to get better in the pocket under pressure, and we still don’t know how he’ll come back from injury. The run threat is a big part of his game. But, I will be shocked if we are actually looking to trade up for one of the QBs this ear.
I’d like to see the team bring in legit competition for him THIS year. He’s going North of 30 coming off an ACL.
So even if he finally does put it all together this year and we have another qb who’s capable of running the offense it puts us ahead of the game rather than being behind the eight ball having to draft a qb becoming a MUST.
Lou, I can get on board with that perspective. I’d be surprised to see it happen this draft, but I see where you are coming from, and the Fins have at least presented the possibility they may go that route.

I am Tannehill fan and I believe we need to draft a QB this year. Not necessarily in the first round but someone who we can develop into a solid backup and or possibly develop into a starter someday. Osweiler is crap and Fales is really untested
I also think the fact that we met with Benkert and Falk is an indication that we are looking at 2nd tier QBs pretty hard
This is where I think we’re going to pick up that developmental guy. A 2nd day QB.

I actually think drafting a rookie QB gives Gase some protection this year. It is the one reason I think a trade up is not out of the question although I still think it is unlikely
I think a number of things other than final record could factor into Gase being here another year or not. I could see us going 6-10, but getting leveled by injuries as one example where he stays.
If the team is horribly undisciplined, under-performs, and has a bad record, then he may be gone, but personally I think it would have to be pretty bad. My estimate is Gase has two firm years left, although if his playcalling is as up and down bad this year, and the offense doesn’t make any strides I would like to see him go at the end of this one.

We need to find a running game and get this OL to play well. They don’t have to be great, but they need to be consistently solid. The aspect of our offense that was much better in 2016 was our running game. Our passing game was pretty much the same as it had been. We threw less, but we scored about the same as we had been.

People keep saying Tanny will be fine with good talent and play around him, but I haven’t seen this good talent and/or play. Other than 2016, we have not had an effective running game forever. It has to change. All this BS about spreading the ball around doesn’t mean shit if we can’t find a way to run effectively. I’m so tired of seeing the same shit year after year. first of all he only played 12 complete games in 2016, under Gase he had a better QBR than he ever has and oh BTW The stat that counts the most….he went 8-5 on games he started, we went 10-6 and made the playoffs!

Plan A for me is Minkah or Derwin @11, then move TJ to OLB, and I think the D is set, just need a late round DT or post June 1st cut to fill up the 4th DT. I really can’t see doing much else, because the 3rd LB doesn’t play that much, Kiko would be #3.
Then on O, we need a TE @42, an RB in the 3rd, 4th woud be a QB and OL.

TJ would be moved around quite a bit, and be the dime back, the DEs rotated all game to keep them fresh.
