2018 NFL Draft – Safeties

On the defensive side of the ball, I’ve covered the DT’s, the LB’s, and today  I’m going to look at the Safeties.  I’m going to skip DE, we’re pretty loaded at that spot, but that doesn’t mean we won’t take a DE if the right one is in the right spot, but I’m about priorities here.  Personally, I’m not convinced we’re not just fine with what we have at safety, with Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald.  McDonald missed 8 games due to his suspension, and it makes sense that it took time for him to get acclimated here.  I think McDonald could also be used in the hybrid role of S/LB in passing situations. Whether that works out or not, we’ll have to wait and see.  In the meantime, here’s the 5 guys I’d consider for us at safety.

Derwin James  6’2 215  Florida State

derwin-james-top

James is a big boy at safety, and the top ranked safety in this draft.  James started 2 years at safety for Florida St, missing most of his Sophomore season with a torn meniscus which resulted in a necessary surgery that ended his season after 2 games.  Despite being a DB, James played a fair amount near the LOS, and in his Freshman season, started 12 games,  finishing with 91 tackles (52 solo), 9.5 TFL, 2 FF’s, 2 FR’s and 4.5 sacks.  In his redshirt Sophomore season, James picked up where left off, and totaled 84 tackles (49 solo) with 2 INT’s, (1 for a TD), 5.5 TFL, and 11 passes defensed.  He is expected to be that hybrid S/LB who can cover TE’s, but that remains to be seen.  James tested very well at the combine, running a fast 4.47 40, putting up 21 reps, showing a sick 40″ vertical, and he also has long arms and big hands.  James is team leader, he’s a very hard worker who comes in and studies film on weekends.  He checks off most of the boxes you look for in a player.  James is the highest rated safety on NFL.com at 6.44.  He’s a top 15 pick for sure, and may be in  consideration for us, depending upon who else is also available.

******************************************************************************

Justin Reid  6’1 204  Stanford

NCAA Football: Stanford at Southern California

While James is a hybrid S/LB type of player, Reid could be the FS type of player we can use.  Pairing him with Reshad Jones would be some duo.  The midichlorians are strong with this one, his brother is Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, formerly of the 49ers.  Reid started his Freshman year in 9 games, and also started every game at S in his Sophomore season.  Reid really came into his own his Junior season, totaling 94 tackles (54 solo), 6.5 TFL, 1 sack, 5 INT’s and 1 FR.  He could be the true back end safety that would allow Jones to help out more in run support.  Reid has the instincts to be a FS, but he’s physical enough to play SS. Reid had an excellent combine, running a 4.4 flat in the 40, putting up 16 reps, showing off a nice 36.5″ vertical, and putting us some very quick 20 YD and 3 cone drill times.  He would be a nice fit here, but the problem is, he’s not worthy of the #11 pick, and I think TE should be our target in RD 2,  and he most likely will be gone late 1st RD anyway.  Rated at

*****************************************************************************

Terrell Edmunds  6’0 217  Virginia Tech

Terrell-Edmunds-GT-game_1510691719241_11021202_ver1.0_640_360

If we don’t take Ferrell’s son Tremaine, maybe we can come away with his other son, Terrell?  Edmunds was a 3 YR starter at VaTech, and his Junior year, he actually started every game at LB.  He finished the season with 101 tackles (52 solo), 4.5 TFL, 4 INT’s, 1 FF and 1 FR.  In his Junior year, Edmunds was switched to S and started 10 games.  He had 61 total tackles (33 solo), 2 INT’s, and 1.5 sacks.  Edmunds is a solid cover guy, and former CB, but his tackling needs a lot of work.  That’s very correctable, he’s a willing tackler, just not an effective one.  His coverage skills and athleticism are going to be what gets him drafted.  Edmunds is a team leader, and he also tested well at the combine, running a 4.47, a truly impressive 41.5″ vertical and 134″ broad jump.  This kid can sky!  Edmunds was rated at 5.54 on NFL.com.

******************************************************************************

Jessie Bates  6’1 200  Wake Forest

Wake Forest v Indiana

Jessie Bates is only a 2 YR starter, so still somewhat raw.  He redshirted his Freshman season, and really put on a show at Wake Forest, totaling 100 tackles (70 solo), 5 INT’s (2 of them for TD’s) and 1 FF.  He’s a very athletic cover man with loose hips and great change of direction ability.  He can cover in the slot, or on the back end, with good instincts, and able to read the QB.  Bates did OK at the combine, he’s not super fast, running a 4.5 40, with a decent 35.5″ vertical.  Bates was rated at 5.84 by NFL.com

*****************************************************************************

Ronnie Harrison  6’3 214  Alabama

636502441424586858-Ronnie-Harrison-Alabama-Mickey-Welsh

Harrison didn’t take the usual route to become a safety as Harrison is actually a former High School QB.  At Alabama, Harrison was a 2 YR starter, only getting limited action as a Freshman.  In his Sophomore season, Harrison had 83 tackles (56 solo) along with 2 INT’s (1 for a TD).  In total, Harrison finished up with 7 total INT’s in his 3 YR stay at Alabama in limited playing time.  He’s got great size and speed, although Harrison did not run at the combine or his pro day.  That may raise a red flag or two, but he’s known to have good speed, so not sure what’s up with that.  Harrison is known to be overly aggressive at times, and tackles too often looking to make the make hit and misses.  He needs to learn proper tackling technique.  He’s very young, only 20, and has work to do, but has a very high ceiling, even Pro Bowl potential.  Harrison is rated at 6.0 on NFL.com

***************************************************************************

So those are the 5, and honestly I went back and forth, erased a couple of times, with some different prospects, such as Godwin Igwebuike, Kyzir White, and Siran Neal.  I’m sure you have a guy I didn’t list, so let’s hear it.

Partly on the coaches, but the players are accountable as well. The coach can put players in th right place, and tell them what to do, but the players still need to execute. There’s no doubt in my mind that Shula being head of the officiating committee had a big influence on the lack of penalties called on our team, much like the Patriots get that now.

If Cleveland drafts QBs at 1 and 4 it is because they figure to trade one of them

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought of that too, but wouldn’t it just be better to take the highest offer for a trade for the draft spot rather than actually drafting the QB and taking the risk?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Depends. Some where draft day deals have happened like the Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers swap or the Elway drafted by the Colts and then trade deal

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wasn’t that deal done beforehand? I don’t recall exactly when, but when the chargers took Manning, it was done so that the Giants took Rivers, and then they traded to each other.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The deal was consummated after the teams drafted their respective QBs. I think many speculated that the trade but it didn’t until each team picked the other QB

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

One interesting note – I was looking at info about the trade between the Chargers and Giants, and they had the stats of all the QB’s in that 2004 draft. Eli Manning in college had a 58.6% completion percentage. In the pro’s? 59.8. Most zebras don’t change their stripes

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Roethlisberger 63.2 % in college, 64.1% in the pros
Rivers 64.3% in college, 64.2% in the pros

      Interesting, isn’t it?

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The false starts by our Oline last year were inexcusable. They know the freaking snap count! The THREE false starts buy Pouncey last year were that much more egregious.

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

From Gase on why the players that were let go are gone:

    1. The way the Dolphins finished the season (three consecutive losses when three consecutive wins would have put them in the playoffs) told Gase a lot about who he wanted on his team in 2018.
“When we look back at it, just the fact that we were right there in the mix at the end,” Gase said. “We end up winning against New England and we have a great shot to go into Buffalo and really make a move and take a rough season and turn that thing around real fast. We didn’t get it done. It was not the team we wanted to be.

“When you hear the word ‘front-runner’ used by people to describe us, that’s something that’s not going to be accepted here,” Gase continued. “We’re going to make changes and we’re going to make sure we get the right people that are going to do things the way we want them. The end of the year told myself a lot, as far as who was in and who was out.”

    _____________________________________

how many teams can you name with a QBR in the top 10 who didn’t make the playoffs in the last 5 years? (Hint) not many.
QBR is the most important stat there is, and Tannys rise in that department since Gase entered the equation is inspiring.

I’ll just say that I don’t know what point you’re trying to make. I was just continuing the comparisons of career completion percentage in the college to the pros that Mike was doing and showing how eerily similar they can be. It’s not an insight or an insult to Gase or Tannehill.

Former NFL cornerback Dimitri Patterson has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against ESPN. Patterson calls the information in the article that described a courthouse scuffle between himself and law enforcement, “false and defamatory in its overall portrayal of DP as a violent, impulsive, unstable person.”

The ESPN story, filed in August by James Walker, occurred while Patterson was in family court due to a potential contempt of court charge stemming from a prior hearing. According to Walker’s reporting, Patterson attempted to escape the courtroom after the judge ordered officers to take him into custody. Two officers were injured during the apprehension including a female officer who “suffered neck and back injuries,” and “a male officer injured his wrist.”

Patterson was subsequently charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.

I didn’t equate winning to least penalties, Rock seemed to assume i did,

I made the leap of thought to “good coaching” because others have in the recent past bashed Gase for not being a good coach and siting the amount of penalties the team has had under him (top of the league both years) as a reason.

    My bad.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In the article I posted above, the Dolphins are going to use a heavy DL rotation to keep guys fresh. One of the reasons they moved on from Suh, because they couldn’t justify his salary sitting on the bench. Suh played 84% of the defensive snaps last year and the team isn’t going to ask any DL to do that this year. Gase cited what the Eagles did last year with a heavy DL rotation.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That was one of the ways Suh made his money. Man had a motor like no other DT…..and even if it lead to him being out of position at times, that engine was always running. DEs not a problem, but gotta think another DT comes in.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah no doubt we need another DT. But that also tells me it doesn’t have to be a high draft pick, but a solid rotational guy. Hayes is also going to see some time inside.

Hayes plays a lot on the left side at DE so that works in a rotation with Wake, and Quinn and Harris on the right side. Not sure where Branch fits in because he normally plays the right side. But we may also use a 4 man front of DEs at times on long down and distance situations.

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It’s a coach’s job to get his players to focus during the week and practice accordingly, so they can replicate it on gameday. Inconsistency in focus and discipline is absolutely part of a coach’s responsibility. Let’s not act like it’s all on the players. The coaches are also responsible. It’s their job to prepare players in such a way that they can focus on game day. Gase is talking all tough now, but the undisciplined play and lack of focus we’ve seen for 2 years falls squarely on his shoulders. We’ll see if things change like he keeps saying they will. He’s fired or traded away all of his excuses….for now.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep -no doubt the seat is all Gase’s now. He’s been real clear he cleaned house in the way he wants….and that goes to both players and coaches.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase has said plenty of times he has to do a better job. I like that he’s not just staying the course and is looking for solutions.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can only lead a horse to water…what he did was got rid of the horses that wouldn’t drink. There’s only so much a coach can do. No coach is going to get Suh, Landry, and Pouncey to do something they don’t want to do. Moss did some things in NE and was sent packing.

  31. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I know it’s something to read and discuss during a slow news season, but what coaches say to reporters means very little. Someone from this blog could have easily written that article without the quotes.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Randy

I don’t know what to say. You played college ball, so I’m sure you’re aware not every player gets treated the same. A guy like Mike Pouncey doesn’t get the attention at practice, if he’s able to practice at all due to his hips, so to blame coaches for his shitty mistakes just seems silly. Suh too, because he KNOWS what he’s supposed to do, but there’s that little thing in his head that tells him he can figure out the snap count and he’s going to guess right, and he’s offsides again. You can’t blame Gase for those things. Young players, sure, maybe they weren’t properly prepared, but not guys like Suh and Puncey, at least not in my view.

  68. I’m sorry and I understand I got called out the last time I called someone names for doing their job but this goofy bastard just did a two round mock and has us trading from #11 to #23 with New England. Doesn’t get any better than this:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t see the Pats targeting Lamar Jackson but I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded down and chose Conner Williams who most think will be moved inside but could flex outside in a pinch. What would the compensation be? NE isn’t moving up from #23 to #11 without giving up one of their 2nd rd picks. This looks like a Pats ball sucking mock. LOL

First, no, I’m not in favor of trading back but I am in favor of picking Ridley. Second, the idea that we’d trade back with one of our division rivals giving them the opportunity to get their guy is ridiculous.
    ——————————————
No i get that an i agree lol, i just thought it was funny that he was purposing two things you have suggested and yet you were on him lol. Im just messin with ya.

I agree though, no way that goes down, 1) Pats aren’t trading up for Lamar Jackson, 2) the whole rival thing you mentioned, 3) we would have stayed put and taken either Minkah Fitzpatrick or Roquan Smith, im not completely sure which but i wouldn’t think we would trade back with either on the board.

The only real thing there that might have been an acceptable part is that we would have gotten two first in the exchange and gotten Ridley as part of the aftermath.

Its probably accurate because this is Ozzie’s last year calling the shots and they need WR and he loves him some Alabama players.

I think a LOT of people are sleeping on Lamar Jackson… especially the NFL media. That said, he’s a project like Josh Allen… but he’s also a DYNAMIC weapon. If Gase can work his magic on him, LOOK OUT!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t be against it but a bit leery. He needs work on his throwing mechanics. Relying too much on his athletic ability has RGIII written all over him. He’s going to get banged up.

    • Jackson is tough. He could be good or then he could be RGIII and you know what I thought about him before the draft. Wow was I wrong.

Tannehill was a project coming out. Allen is a step down from Tannehill. So, there’s that.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Absolutely, even if at the same time the Fest is about a family….so step above guy on the next bar stool. • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He could catch 50-60 passes this year. He had 32 last year in 6-7 starts and some limited action in the rest of the games.

  82. MF,
It’s interesting to see this “obsession” so many Phins fans seem to have these days about moving McDonald to LB and I say that because I always thought Jones should be a guy they should consider moving there.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt they are moving anywhere unless we get a starting FS, and i highly doubt that happens in the draft

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think I remember you saying that at one point… or at least somebody saying as much, and not just recently.

Whomever of the two (Reshad or TJ), should we switch one to full-time LB, it would address a NEED at the LB position with good hands.

Maybe we don’t get after The Pearl, but I wouldn’t want to blow our 1st round pick on an Alabama (Saban-coached) DB… they have a HUGE history of failure in the NFL: address Safety later in the Draft.

      • It’s interesting that Burke was recently talking about the hybrid guys at LB these days. I know they’ve been doing their due diligence on Bobby Jones from NIU who fits that role but he’s probably more of a late rd/udfa guy and not someone projected to be a starter.

  83. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

A lot of guys back then were tooting Hennes horn, I was attacked for saying he sucked

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we should swap out of 11, try to gain a 1st next year, we will still net a late 1st early second this year and a 1st next year, then next year we have 2 -1s swap out of one of those and keep those high draft picks rolling in with that system.
a first next year is less valuable this year but gains in equity next year.
just like real estate, you buy a home hold it gain equity and sell it for a profit

      • swap out before seeing who’s available?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt that, just a plan of action or philosophy to gain quality players, it takes time but the returns would be incredible, it’s all about value, and time creates value if you’re patient.
what is the 5th pick worth today in point value, and whats it worth next year in point value? the difference is gained equity

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

whats next years 5th worth today??

      • the way I see it, your equity comes from building a team that has quality players at every position. then, you may have a guy who was a 5th rd pick that you may be able to get a 2nd or 3rd for because he’s that good. but, you need to continue to keep adding that kind of talent year after year in order for you to build that equity.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Reshad, while great in run support, is pretty good at being around the ball in the secondary. I didn’t get to see TJ much, but I’d rather leave Jones back in coverage. He’s a playmaker

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think McDonald or Jones could be a nickel LB along with another LB and 5 additional DBs. It looks like dime but those guys can crash a running play like LBs.

this is not about picking a certain player at 5, it’s about trading todays picks for next years picks,
we did it in 2016 with the Vikes however we were on the losing end.
the vikes gave us # 86 worth 160 pts, they got from us # 186 worth 17 points and also a 3rd and 4th in 2017 worth 260 pts, so if you divide 160 by 277 they received a 57% return in equity for waiting one year,

  88. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Henne could have been serviceable until they drafted a real QB, but bad coaching and bipolar drafting did him in. We threw a pretty solid team away.

  89. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Henne had horrible footwork, he took an extra step telegraphing passes, he was a klutz with his feet, that’s why he sucked! he couldn’t walk and chew at the same time.
    somethings you just cant teach

  90. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It boils down to the vikes took a mid 3rd round selection and turned it into a 2nd in 1 year
