The Wedge Scouting Report: Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech

Technology is such a treat.  You can build whatever you want.  Take this Crusherbot I made.  It is perfect.  It has everything I need.  Arachnid speed legs,  Muttominium Steel as a shell and a photon cannon to target lifeforms everywhere.

Just release the Crusherbot and watch it destroy!

Robotsurface

I bet that’s the way NFL defensive coordinators think about Tremaine Edmunds.  It’s like some one built the perfect linebacker.  Just put him on the field and watch him destroy offenses.

Edmunds8

The Positives:  Start with his size:  6’5, 250.  Edmunds is a big rangy linebacker with speed.  Edmunds ran a 4.54 40 yard dash at the combine which was 5th among linebackers at the combine.  That rare combination of size and speed has NFL GMs salivating.  Edmunds consistently displays quickness, ability and balance on tape.

Edmunds an play in multiple schemes inside and out.  An underrated part of his game is his coverage ability.  Edmunds is not the kind of linebacker that will need to come off the field on 3rd down.   He’s also a good pass rusher.  Edmunds had 10 sacks in the last two years of football.

Statistically, his best season was 2017, his junior year.  Edmunds had 108 tackles, including 14 for a loss and 57 solo tackles.  Most scouts think he will get even better in time.  He is young and a little raw.

North Carolina v Virginia Tech

The Negatives:  On paper he looks perfect.  On film, with hyper analysis, you can see some minor flaws.  Edmunds is a bit raw.  The instincts aren’t always there – he some times takes false steps.

But the reality is most teams will accept that.  The upside is just too strong and those instincts – they will come in time.

Edmunds4

The Alien Dust:  Edmunds is a special prospect with the possibility of becoming one of the best football players of the 2018 draft.  He’s one of two linebackers, the other being Roquan Smith, that is battling to be the top linebacker in the 2018 draft.

I expect Edmunds to be selected right before the Dolphins pick at 11, but it is possible he is there at 11.  Edmunds is one of a handful of players that might be available at 11 that is an elite prospect.

And wouldn’t that be something?  If selected Edmunds would be following the footsteps of his father, Ferrell who was drafted by the Dolphins in the 80s.  Ferrell Edmunds had a lot of quality years for the Dolphins catching Dan Marino’s passes.

Camping World Independence Bowl - Tulsa v Virginia Tech

If Tremaine Edmunds was an alien weapon of destruction – he would definitely be the a Crusherbot.  Just release him on the field and watch him destroy!

    FOIST!

He’s going to the 49ers, IMO, being Reuben Foster is going to jail.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Roquan Smith fits our scheme better and is more ready to go. To me he is Derrick Rodgers at worst and Derrick Brooks at best. LOL

    Somewhere in between. 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

RIGHT with ya, man. I, too, see Roquan as being the better scheme-fit player for us.

While I LOVE Tremaine, he’s got 3-4 Defense written all over him with his size/length… and that’s why I predict that the 9’ers will draft him after Reuben Foster’s arrest (and ultimate banishment via jail, from the NFL).

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed, Edmunds is real young (19) and a hybrid. He might be Khalil Mack in 2-3 years though. The way the Phins are set up, I don’t think you go that young at #11.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me Edmunds is a high level developmental player. But the Dolphins are built to compete this year even if you don’t want to admit it. 🙂

  3. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like Edmunds better than Smith
But it’s a pretty minor preference

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Reuben Foster is 6-1 230, so not sure the 49ers have to go LB at #9 because of what’s going on with him. I could see them selecting McGlinchey to replace Staley 12th season at LT for years to come with Jimmy G. You don’t pay that money for a QB than don’t protect it.

Mike, the Mets are playing the way I want to see the Dolphins play. Everyone plays a part and different guys coming through in the clutch
    ________________________________________________

Wow what a team, considering there may be 8 teams out of all MLB that actually want to compete and the rest are there for the shared revenue check it’s just astonishing how good the Mets are!

What’s also astonishing is how those teams fans are duped into following them as if winning is a great achievement, Those fans who pay for tickets or even watch them on TV are being fleeced.

you shouldn’t confuse the Mets with the Dolphins as the Dolphins have to compete with all the other teams in their league.

pro wrestling is less fake. MLB SUCKS

Pig — Great take on Edmunds. Sounds like a great prospect. Little weird that the kid of an NFL player is considered “raw” but I’d be cool with either him or Smith. I’d actually prefer a DT, but they both seem a notch more “BP” than Vea.

I wonder, even though we have Gore now, if the Dolphins look to pick up Anderson now that he has been cut.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Denver cut Anderson rather than pay him $4.5 mil. And he is only 27. Was thinking we might go RB in the first four rounds, but he would be another option.

  16. D's avatar D says:

According to Denver we were going to trade James for Anderson and then backed out, but the FO said we did not make such a deal.

  18. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  19. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

After the Gore signing I don’t think we pursue Anderson?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Unlikely, but pretty sure Gore chose us as part of his retirement planning. 50/50 as to whether he plays out both years on his contract.

    • D's avatar D says:

Gore’s contract is so minimal im not sure we wouldn’t still pursue Anderson. Anderson is a young player still and he would give us more than a 1 year stop gap. If the price is right i can see us signing him and then cutting loose a player like Perry if we also draft a player. I dont think Anderson signing would preclude a rookie draft, it just might move the priority of the pick down a bit.

  20. D's avatar D says:

There could be a bidding war for Anderson and if that happens i think we would be ruled out unless h just chose to play for us instead of taking the highest bid. As a RB i think that would be a dumb more personally.

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Came a cross a nice summary of the four phases of the “voluntary” NFL offseason program for vets allowed under the CBA.

Phase I: Two weeks of strength and conditioning work
Phase II: Three weeks working on individual drills, but no helmets.
Phase III: 10 sessions of more extensive drills with helmets.
Phase IV: Three minicamp practices limited to 3.5 hours on-field each day.

    • D's avatar D says:

Man i remember the days that the first friggin day of practices were so long and they would run you at the end of them until someone puked. They really go easy on players these days.

  22. D's avatar D says:

Charlie new mock has us drafting (6 rounds):
    Roquan Smith
    Nick Chubb
    Joe Dirt
    Luke Falk
    Oren Burks
    Eddie Pinero

Thats a really good draft. Even though he passed on Rosen to take Smith im not really upset by that. If the FO passes on one of the top 4 QB’s to take Smith im going to assume the QB wasn’t their guy. If they get Falk later as a prospect, ill definitely be happy with him as consolidation to a first round QB.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Walter has:
      Minkah Fitzpatrick
      Hayden Hurst
      Luke Falk
      Shaqueem Griffen
      Trayvon Henderson
      Jamarcus King

Not as good as Charlies, but not awful either. I think he is more right than Charlie on where we would have to pick Falk too, he may also not last past second.

  23. D's avatar D says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 11: Mayfield, Baker, QB, Oklahoma (A-)
Round 2 Pick 10: Hurst, Hayden, TE, South Carolina (B)
Round 3 Pick 9: Chubb, Nick, RB, Georgia (A)
Round 4 Pick 23: Norton, Kendrick, DT, Miami (FL) (A)
Round 4 Pick 30: Bates III, Jessie, FS, Wake Forest (A+)
Round 6 Pick 35: Demby, Jamil, OG, Maine (A+)
    Round 7 Pick 5: Pineiro, Eddy, K, Florida (A+)

Interesting article on Walterfootball about Vander Esch. Seems like he might be a buyer beware kind of selection.
    ———————————————–
One of the late-rising prospects during the leadup to the 2018 NFL Draft has been Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. He put together some excellent workouts for teams, showing speed and athleticism in his 6-foot-4, 256-pound frame. Injuries limited Vander Esch to six games in 2016, but he exploded as a junior with 141 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss, four sacks, four passes broken up and three interceptions. That injury history, however, has still comeback to bite Vander Esch, as WalterFootball.com has learned that some teams have removed him from their draft board after was flunking him medically.

Sources from four teams said they felt Vander Esch belongs on the second day of the 2018 NFL Draft and would go there. Two other team sources thought Vander Esch could go late in the first round. One team that flunked him medically said they had a third-round grade on Vander Esch before the medical report ruled him out.

“To me, he’s a third-round talent, but probably will go higher,” said an AFC general manager. “He has gotten a lot of hype, but he plays soft. He’s too much like Paul Posluszny for me. He’s a good player and will have a lot of tackles, but most of them will come four yards downfield. He’s not an impact-at-the-line guy like a Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly, Jon Beason or Brian Urlacher.”

Helping Vander Esch to go in the first round are teams not having 32 first-round grades. It varies by team, but in the final dozen picks of the first round, there will be players with second-round grades getting selected because there are not enough true first-rounders. Vander Esch could be one of those players, but medical concerns also might cause him to slide to Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

There’s nothing you can say that will make me not enjoy the Mets success early in the season. Baseball is the sport I have played all my life, as young child of 4 or 5 until now playing softball. I love football, but I know baseball like the back of my hand. I don’t see it the way you do that only 8 teams want to compete, but you know well that I strongly believe in a salary cap in MLB, as well as a salary floor. There’s no reason one team can have a $200M payroll while another has a $40M payroll. The floor should be about $80M, and the cap should be about $180M. Big market teams will still have their advantage, but it will be much closer than before.

I don’t blame you for being angry, I’d hate that Jeter let your team get raped in the Stanton deal. He should have had a plan in place to keep him until the trade deadline if he couldn’t get what he wanted. I still wonder if Jeter had a debt to the Yankees that he had to settle by giving Stanton away to them. Who knows. Either way, I’m going to enjoy the Mets success while it lasts, it’s so much fun to watch them succeed. I watch them either way, good or bad, but it’s much more fun when they’re doing well.

I was curious to see if we would take a shot on him after the Browns cut him, but figured since so much time had passed we werent interested.

  57. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

    Wyo,

We’re healthy beyond Steph. He is supposed to come back hopefully for the 2nd round (assuming we get there) but the year we lost to Cleveland in the finals he came back after a couple rounds and although he still played great, you could tell he was still slowed by the injury. I just want him healthy for the long run at this point. He makes the Dubs what they are, in spite of the other all-stars we have.

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I absolutely LOVED Gavin Escobar coming out of the 2013 Draft and was hoping we’d draft him. After that, I was hoping we’d trade for him in the ensuing years, being the Cowboys had a LOT of talent at TE.

Sorry, but I think his best days are behind him at this point. I’d love it if he could make the final 53 (proving his return to health), but I think he’s just a camp body at this point.

    M/D,

I feel like it was one, or maybe both of you I talked to back in 2013 about this kid. I don’t have any major expectations at this point, but if he made the team I’d be stoked!

I’m right there with ya, Jahndoh!

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i wasnt as in on him as you were i dont think, but i thought he was a solid prospect. I think there was a little more expectations of him when the Cowboys took him, but he might be nice addition to our offense. Looks like he helps us make pressing for a top TE in the draft not as important, though i feel they will still try to land one of the top 5. Signing a guy like Escobar could make Dalton Schultz a realist target in the 4th.

    • D's avatar D says:

Definitely nice seeing ya around. You will have to stop by more through the next couple of weeks at least to see the build up discussions and post draft venting that im sure will go on here lol.

What are you talking about, LOL. EVERYBODY will be in unison with our draft picks! J/K, LOL 😀

It usually takes me about a week to get over these things, but I eventually get over it! 🙂

  60. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Man… SO many rumors (it’s SMOKE SEASON, y’all)…

  61. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Regarding CJ Anderson’s release from the Broncos… yes, I feel like we’re going to pick him up. Don’t write that in stone (of course), but I’d be against it after signing Frank Gore and having young Drake in-house.

I’d rather draft one (I’m with Pig on this) than to pay yet another FA.

    • D's avatar D says:

Right now we have 4 RB’s on the roster. Drake, Gore, Perry and Brandon Radcliffe. I dont see anyone on that list that really says we should keep him over picking up Anderson. The deal i think comes down to money. If they can get Anderson at a reasonable price, i think they should take him. You could keep draft one still with plans on keeping 4 if that prospect shows promise or try to stash them on the PS if they dont seem to be hitting the ground running and need some cook time. You could also keep Perry and stash the rookie if you just wanted to keep 4 RB’s.

I think it comes down to money, we just dont have a ton of space left to eat a big or even moderately big contract. Coming off a 1K season i am pretty sure someone is going to want to take a shot at him and they probably have more to offer than we do, so i see it as unlikely but im sure we will be interested and at least make an attempt.

  62. D's avatar D says:

Id say right now, Escobar could mean the end of days for Duarte, as i think that he just really has not panned out anywhere close to what they expected him to, even as a move TE. Escobar at least represents a decent RZ target. Granted i also think Escobar is a camp body with potential at this point, but my expectations is that if we draft a TE, especially in day 2, we likely keep that guy, Derby and Gray, with a fringe chance of one more, meaning Duarte or Escobar will barely make the team and likely play in certain packages only. If thats the case, as i said before i think Escobar has a better chance of making the team. There is a chance we grab an UDFA or late round TE and neither of them make it, but i think for now he gives us someone with potential going into camp.

  63. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

    M and D:

Likewise guys, nice seeing ya. I’ll try and keep up between now and the draft, even if I’m not posting…cheers!

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

When I do a mock draft for us, I always find it difficult to discern what I ‘think we’ll do’ vs what ‘I’D do’… it’s almost maddening! LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont find it too hard, usually, though this year it seems pretty hard. A lot of the mock’s i have done that people havent been so fond of were from the perspective of what i think the team will do, like any time i select Baker Mayfield.

There just seems to be too much interest from us to not expect them to select him if he is on the board when we pick, so like the pick or not, IMO he will be the pick if he is there. I think though, he wont be there lol, its looking almost certain that the Jets are going to take him.

Rosen is a different story, im about 50/50 on him being there when we pick and im not 100% sure how we feel about him. I know we have been said to like him a lot, but i dont know that i have ever heard it to where i was convinced it was anything more than a rumor.

I personally dont have a clue what we will do because there are so many worthwhile options avaialbe and so many people we are said to be in love with that are legit prospects that would elevate our team. This is a good problem for us to have, so at least the first round of this years draft im just going to sit back and watch whatever happens and however it happens, once the ball is rolling maybe ill have a better feel of whom we should select next and so on but the first round is almost impossible for me to guess right now.

If everyone in the draft was there when we picked, my pick would be Nelson. I think if everyone was there for the Dolphins their pick would be Mayfield. Infact my top 10 board would look something like this if it was a purely verticle board.

    Nelson
    Barkley
    Allen
    Chubb
    Fitzpatrick
    Smith
    Edmunds
    Mayfield
    Ridley
    Vea

Im not a big fan of Darnold, and Rosen and Mayfield are on equal footing with me but because of system fit i put Mayfield on the list over Rosen.

I really like Josh Allen, there just feels to be something there with that kid, maybe im wrong but there seems to be progress being made already. He was a lot better at the Senior Bowl than some of his latter games at Wyoming, and he looked even better at Combine than Senior Bowl, and then his Pro Day was supposedly even more impressive.

I think Escobar will get a chance to compete for a roster spot and that’s all it is. Gray has a role, Derby might stick as a depth TE and Duarte gets a last chance to make the team. Then we draft a TE. We probably keep 3 or 4.

      • D's avatar D says:

Usually the smoke screen ones are things that look to make a player fall or rise in the draft like the Vander Esch thing i posted that Walter football had reported as a rumor. I dont think the ones that are “this team likes this player” are necessarily smoke screens but more a reflection of teams liking multiple players, part of their planning for flexibility in the draft. I tdont think its smoke and mirrors, because it doesn’t have to be, you can just say you like this this this and this player and because you are pointing in multiple directions none of them seem to be THE choice.

I do know that we have a strong history of drafting players we meet with, and specifically the ones we bring in for 30 visits, so i think there is some legitimacy to a good portion of the rumors.

      • D's avatar D says:

We also have a history of teams picking players we have brought in on 30 visits right before we pick too so those teams obviously knew that we were legitimately interested in them too lol. I remember last year Detroit too Jarrad Davis and Jalen Tabor the pick before us, both were players we had met with multiple times and we were to have liked a good bit.

      • D's avatar D says:

TB did it with Hargreaves the year before. NYG did it with Apple, though that was the Tunsil year so it was highly unlikely we would have taken either of them over Tunsil.

But the DJ tweet that M13 posted was about crazy trade rumors, not about which prospects a team may like.

Not saying there havent been players we didnt hav in on visits, like Caroo or Harris, but majority of them we did. I put up a list, maybe a year ago this time and its a convincing percentage.

I’m left to assume that the Bills and Cardinals are going to do their VERY best to trade up.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the Giants might be willing to trade down if they get an offer they can’t refuse. I could see the Bills wanting to jump the Jets for a QB. So for us we want this to be a bust year for QBs. LOL

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      YES… that means I think he’ll be available for us @ R1P11.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d be happy with that. He would add some nice speed and playmaking ability at LB. I guess because 99% of the mocks have the Raiders taking him at #10 has worn me out that he won’t fall to us. LOL

We might have to trade to #9 and I would not be surprised if we did something like that. I’m not against it either, get the guy you want if you can. It’s about acquiring quality players, not just having lots of draft picks.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Lol i just found a Browns board where they are talking about the Browns fleecing the Giants out of picks to let them swap spots and taking them for their second and a 2019 second and then trading the 4th pick to the Bills for 12, 22, and 53 (IMO they could get more, a lot more, for that pick). They then trade 12, 34, and 53 to move back up to 6, So they would end up with 2,6,22 still get Mayfield (whom this guy is suggesting is who they want anyways), they get Ward, whom again, this guy is suggesting they want more than other prospects and get the 22nd pick in trade and pick up a 2nd high round 2nd and a 2019 2nd in trade. These guys get crazier with their trades than we do.

  75. D's avatar D says:

We really arent in a position to trade back, its too much to give up vs staying put and there really isnt as much to gain in trade compensation. We either stay put or trade up.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

It all depends on who is left for me!
If the 3 top qb’s and the LB’s are gone I’d definitely consider a trade back!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we came away from the draft with 4-5 guys who can help us right away and for the future, I’ll take that over 8 or more picks.

    • D's avatar D says:

I still see Vea, Fitzpatrick, and James as too valuable to pass on too. There are just too many players that are rated high enough to not trade back on and what we could get in compensation isnt going to be there, especially with those players off the board. No scenario really fits where we would be picking up anything of value greater than what we would be losing.

  76. D's avatar D says:

I dont see the Bills moving all the way up to 2. I really cant see them giving up the capital to move up higher than 6. That 22nd pick isnt a strong pick this year, its going to be viewed as a equivalent to a 2nd rounder.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

12, 22, 53, 65, picks in 2019. The Bills would get their QB and still have a pick in the 2nd through 6th. A new GM and HC with the NYG like to have picks to change their team over the next few years. I could totally see this happening.

      • D's avatar D says:

That isnt going to be enough to go to 2. They will have to give up at least a future first along with that. The Bills are also in that position too, so i cant see them giving up all that when they really need to restock, especially on the OL.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said 2019 picks as well – let them work it out, lol. The Giants would end up having 4 picks within the top 35 and 7 within the top 69. Think about that, and then more compensation in 2019. The Giants are built to win now but a new GM and HC also want to keep it sustainable. A trade like this would help with that.

It’s all about the Bills really wanting 1 of 2 QBs.

  77. D's avatar D says:

12 to 2 with whats still available at 2 is going to be crazy expensive. I mean just look at what the Bears gave up just to move up one spot last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My bad, I had dyslexia on 53 as 35 with my later post. LOL

Make a couple of adjustments and still it can be done. Like I said it’s all about how bad the Bills want 1 of 2 QBs. Is AJ McCarron or Nathan Peterman really their guy?

  80. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t see the Giants moving out of the 2 spot. They either get a QB Barkley or Chubb. No one of that quality will be there at 12

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats how i see it too. I just dont see the motivation on the Giants side to give up that pick without a mountain of picks and i dont think the Bills, needing to restock their team, are going to be willing to give up that much. That pick is just too valuable this year.

    • D's avatar D says:

Especially Barkley and Chubb would make an immediate difference maker to their team.

  81. D's avatar D says:

Tim, im just saying the same thing you are, just on the opposite side of the argument, you are saying its feasibl and they may want to make that trade and im saying i dont see it as feasible and dont think they would make the trade. Im not saying it wont happen, im just feeling its unlikely the Bills in their position make that trade.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken and D, I’m just throwing out a trade scenario, not pining for it or predicting it. I just think it’s possible. I like Chubb for the Giants. Barkley is a great prospect, but I don’t think he’s so much better than some of the other RBs. I think there are other good RBs available in the 2nd and 3rd who have close potential. Chubb seems to be an elite prospect where other edge rushers are not.

Might be why we traded for Quinn, we didn’t see the depth of potential in the draft.

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Tim:
I think Barkley is in the same class of RB prospects such as Adrian Peterson and Todd Gurley. Guys that are immediate difference makers. I don’t think there is another back in the draft that is remotely close to him. I think he may be the best player in the draft

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What’s the difference though with some of these guys as far as production? A few hundred yards and maybe 3-4 TDs. Guice and Michel could be close, IMO.

I actually think Chubb is the best player in the draft.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The difference is guys like Gurley and Peterson made non competitive teams competitive almost overnight. I like Chubb but I don’t think he is at that level. Barkley can make a huge difference on the Giants.

My best friend in high school passed away weekend before last and I went to her memorial service this past weekend. Our lives had taken different paths and I hadn’t seen or talked to her in at least 20 years if not more. I tried to remember the last time I saw her and I couldn’t. It probably was just a wave and a see you later, never knowing that was going to be the last time.

I count 9 non QBs that may go top 10. RB, DE, 2S, 2LBs, WR, CB, G. We most likely won’t take Ridley, and shouldn’t take Ward, so that still leaves us a blue chipper or a QB. I Can’t see a trade down, and hope there’s no trade up, so as long as MTP keeps his FN hands out of the cookie jar, we should get a very good player.
