The Wedge Scouting Report: Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech

Technology is such a treat.  You can build whatever you want.  Take this Crusherbot I made.  It is perfect.  It has everything I need.  Arachnid speed legs,  Muttominium Steel as a shell and a photon cannon to target lifeforms everywhere.

Just release the Crusherbot and watch it destroy!

Robotsurface

I bet that’s the way NFL defensive coordinators think about Tremaine Edmunds.  It’s like some one built the perfect linebacker.  Just put him on the field and watch him destroy offenses.

Edmunds8

The Positives:  Start with his size:  6’5, 250.  Edmunds is a big rangy linebacker with speed.  Edmunds ran a 4.54 40 yard dash at the combine which was 5th among linebackers at the combine.  That rare combination of size and speed has NFL GMs salivating.  Edmunds consistently displays quickness, ability and balance on tape.

Edmunds an play in multiple schemes inside and out.  An underrated part of his game is his coverage ability.  Edmunds is not the kind of linebacker that will need to come off the field on 3rd down.   He’s also a good pass rusher.  Edmunds had 10 sacks in the last two years of football.

Statistically, his best season was 2017, his junior year.  Edmunds had 108 tackles, including 14 for a loss and 57 solo tackles.  Most scouts think he will get even better in time.  He is young and a little raw.

North Carolina v Virginia Tech

The Negatives:  On paper he looks perfect.  On film, with hyper analysis, you can see some minor flaws.  Edmunds is a bit raw.  The instincts aren’t always there – he some times takes false steps.

But the reality is most teams will accept that.  The upside is just too strong and those instincts – they will come in time.

Edmunds4

The Alien Dust:  Edmunds is a special prospect with the possibility of becoming one of the best football players of the 2018 draft.  He’s one of two linebackers, the other being Roquan Smith, that is battling to be the top linebacker in the 2018 draft.

I expect Edmunds to be selected right before the Dolphins pick at 11, but it is possible he is there at 11.  Edmunds is one of a handful of players that might be available at 11 that is an elite prospect.

And wouldn’t that be something?  If selected Edmunds would be following the footsteps of his father, Ferrell who was drafted by the Dolphins in the 80s.  Ferrell Edmunds had a lot of quality years for the Dolphins catching Dan Marino’s passes.

Camping World Independence Bowl - Tulsa v Virginia Tech

If Tremaine Edmunds was an alien weapon of destruction – he would definitely be the a Crusherbot.  Just release him on the field and watch him destroy!

Mets get their first real setback of the season, allowing the Nats to overcome a 6-1 lead. I think it’s very important for the Mets to bounce back tonight. It’s only 1 game, but I think they need to show the Nats who’s boss, especially since the Nats are shorthanded with injuries.

I think you can’t help but think about mortality the older you get. You see your parents grow old and pass away. Then your friends. My best friend in high school passed away weekend before last and I went to her memorial service this past weekend. Our lives had taken different paths and I hadn’t seen or talked to her in at least 20 years if not more. I tried to remember the last time I saw her and I couldn’t. It probably was just a wave and a see you later, never knowing that was going to be the last time.

Wow what a Debbie Downer post. I think I need a drink or ten.
    ————————————–
I have been thinking about it a good bit recently. My dad who has multiple meyloma, and has been battling it for a while recently had more lesions found in his body, specifically his liver and its been determined that he has also developed Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He is responding really well to the treatments, but he’s late enough in life that even best case scenario probably means ill only have him for 5-10 years max. So ts almost as if i can see the end of the road for him. My mother isnt in great health either, and is a year older than him so i wouldnt be surprised if she isnt at the same max timeframe. I can see the end of the road for them and it it scares me and saddens me. I really want my kids to have more time with both of them.

When you start thinking of all that and you see the 5-10 kind of expectations, you tart to think about the cycle of life and how you are heading to the same spot just X number of years behind them so your own mortality doesn’t seem so distant anymore either. Then your hero start dying, the prominent figures of your youth start to die, or really really show their age and you realize you arent so young anymore and life is half over not less than half way started. All people must come to these terms and conclusions, and i think most of us are in that phase where this is that pivot point moving pass the blissfully ignorant to how close we are, to realizing wow i dont know if im going to have time to finish all those dreams i had of doing, or make the impact i wanted to make.

VERY much agreed. I still have a MAN CRUSH on Josh Jackson, but I don’t believe we need him as a ‘luxury’ 1st round pick with so many other positions to be addressed.

    A FEW COMMENTS:
OCALA ROB: I totally agree with your analysis of MLB. Last year the Dodger’s payroll exceeded $240 million, while the “bottom feeders” languished at about $55-$65 million. AT MOST, 8-10 ball clubs have a chance to win it all. Meanwhile BOTH Florida teams currently are 4-12 as we finish the first 10% of the season. They are on pace to be 40-120 with 2 games left in the season!!! WHAT A TRAVESTY for the sports fan.

Luckily for Mike E, his Mets are one of the 8-10 teams that are doing well and could win it all. I’ll be rooting for your boys, Mike!! AS FOR ME, I’m gonna focus MORE on the NHL playoffs and NOT watch MLB. Hockey’s “roof and Basement” numbers are $55 M minimum and $75 M maximum, and those supposedly are HARD CAP NUMBERS per Tampa Bay’s Paul Kennedy, a TV analyst. The NFL also has a fairly narrow spread between its minimum and maximum, so they’ll continue to earn my attention every year (despite the impact of the DOOFUS BRIGADE!) Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg wants taxpayers to foot the vast majority of the costs of a new downtown domed and air conditioned stadium (estimated to cost between $800 million and ONE Billion dollars.) ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE the voters of Hillsborough County will DO THAT!! EVEN a 50-50 split HAS NO CHANCE as long as some teams can spend $250 million plus in salaries while teams like the A’s and Rays operate at less than one-fourth of that total!! I HOPE TAMPA BAY is the first MLB town to tell the local owner to get his greedy, lying, ass outta town as soon as possible!! Right now, the Rays and Marlins are barely putting 7,000 fannies in the stands. That will fall to 3,000-4,000 by the All-Star break. When push comes to shove, will Rob Manfred and the baseball owners FINALLY come to their senses on this issue?? – – Frankly, I doubt it. I think most owners would rather cut 4 or more franchises than go with a HARD CAP. Baseball is slowly dropping dead from the incredible greed of its owners. The taxpayers have had enough. FUCK MLB!!!

Hope everyone’s weather improves. Highs near 75, lows in the upper 50’s here today in Tampa Bay. Another day in paradise, even for lovers of baseball.

FINALLY, FAU’s baseball team finally cracked the Top 30 Division I poll, coming in at #26 this week with a 26-9 record. This is NOT the strongest team FAU has had recently, far from it. But their reputation is, I believe, giving them a few extra points in the poll. They appear to be a lock for the NCAA playoffs, which start in a few weeks.

I was talking to a friend of mine who’s a Giants fan and he told me Dave Gettleman has never traded down as a GM. My friend feels Barkley or Chubb should be the pick.

ONE FINAL POINT tonight. Looked up Phil Steele’s web site and discovered that two of his employees who make mock drafts are predicting that the Dolphins will take Baker Mayfield at #11!!
–I think Phil should stick to college football (where he has the best magazine in the business.) I WILL BE STUNNED if Mayfield is still around at #11. The only thing that would stun me more would be if T-BOMB selected McGlinchy or some other prime O-Lineman to protect our quarterback, which would REALLY make sense. When it comes to T-BOMB, you gotta bet on stupid!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McGlinchy is a tackle and we have Tunsil and James with Young as the backup. Davis can also swing outside and we have 3 other young tackles competing. He doesn’t really make sense for us. A C/G would be better. Not sure any of them are worthy at #11 though. 2nd rd might will though.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We added two OL in the offseason and locked up James
I don’t think we are adding OL this n the first unless nelson falls to 11

This is a really bad draft class for OTs imo

The quality is interior OL but after Nelson I think anything else is kind of a reach

I wouldn’t be upset with Hernandez as the pick bc I think he’s a good player but if we did that we would be passing up other good prospects at other positions that can help us too

Personally I don’t like McGlinchy and I think the only reason he is a consideration is bc he is the best OT of a weak OT class – so I would be upset with that pick

I pretty much don’t like the idea of drafting a CB, DE or OT with our pick at 11
Other than I’m pretty wide open – except kicker…lol

  51. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I watched Belichick talk about the draft on NFLN and he said (paraphrasing) I really don’t understand the “need” thing. You pick the best players because if the guy that you have a need at can’t play what’s the point? You draft the best players on your board and figure it out along the way.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

With all the “I have no idea what the Dolphins are doing” rhetoric going on, it’s not that complex. Gase wanted a culture change from what he inherited and continues to turnover. Pundits act like he broke up a perennial playoff team. Stop!

I think a lot of the sacks that Tannehill endures were because of Tannehill. he stands back there like a statue, holds the ball forever and has no pocket awareness. that IMO was why he’s the most sacked QB. another reason for the sacks was the lack of a running game, without the running game the offense becomes predictable.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree a lot of the sacks are on him, but it just isn’t true to say he stands back there like a statue. I see his problem is he doesn’t know where to go when he moves sometimes, but other times he seems to move very well and into the right place. The OL does get a lot of the blame too though, they just haven’t been healthy enough or good enough.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as for tanny standing like a statue, he stands back ready to throw and doesnt move from that position until he’s ready to either throw or scramble to his right, he doesn’t have the subtle moves inside the pocket to free his arm and passing lane up as marino did, he’s totally unaware of his surroundings, that’s why he gets strip sacked or has balls deflected

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with that, and have said for years it’s better to have the Marino wiggle than scrambling ability.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A major deficit for Tanny is pocket awareness. Add in that the tough kid often holds on to long instead of throwing it away. Cutler took less sacks, but then he acted like the ball was so hot he could barely hold it….cause he was scared of getting hit. That he was goes in part on the OL too.

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

PBP has a ridiculous article Early Gase momentum lost in constant churn of players. Dudes trying to compare FA with the 70s.

I’d rather Gase make the changes he feels are necessary instead of status quo. He could’ve kept Suh and Pouncey, signed Landry and had the same issues we had last year, team quiting, players free lancing stagnant offense…

I admire Gase for making these changes, that no one saw coming, except maybe Landry. A big part of being a coach is getting your players to play for you, and if they won’t not much you can do except get rid of them.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

With you on that. Not sure how it will end up, but I like what Gase is doing. Was scared he’d max out the old roster this season, just cause he was on the hot seat…but he is going his way and in a more long-term way. Could be it ends up a crash and burn, but do have faith in Gase’s football smart and integrity.

Well, I’m told the following by people familiar with the team’s thinking …The Dolphins really like Jones and McDonald, but both are more or less box safety types. And while that’s really good if the NFL was all about running the football, the opposite is true. The NFL is mostly about passing the football…….

If the Dolphins, however, succeed in adding a starting-caliber coverage safety then we have a three-headed situation for two safety spots. And that’s where McDonald’s 6-3 and 205-pound frame might find itself playing some linebacker in passing situations. Or a lot of linebacker if the Dolphins can’t draft a starter.

So, if we’re going to be using TJ as an LB, would that stop us from using 11 on Smith or Edmonds and draft Minkah or Derwin? I would think it depends on who is available, like the great cheat recently said, just pick from your board and forget need. Or just get an FS later, or Vicarro.

  69. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’ve seen very few of the sacks on Tanny that were actually on him. The pocket presence awareness is exaggerated, the same way with most disappointing things on this team are. Play calling has been a big factor in the sacks Tanny that takes. They know the 0-line hasn’t been up to snuff, but they would still call empty backfield shotgun plays and not leave anyone running routes for check downs. Also, not being able to audible out of a bad play for most of his career certainly didn’t help either.

    • D's avatar D says:

Weakness at the OG spot didnt always leave him avenues to escape the pocket to the front, but he inexplicably would step backwards when trying to “escape” pressure and step right into it. He also would stand as a statue, flat footed, even wit pressure pouring down on him and an open spot to the front to step up, so i disagree, i think his pocket awareness, his pocket movement and his pocket instincts are bad, and always have been. I also feel he has no sense of play timing so he doesnt have that clock in his head going 1, 2, 3…. ie pretty much the maximum amount of time he should expect a pocket to hold up, to begin his thoughts of what to do next.

He is not natural in the pocket, and that along with the weakness at the OG position in general is why he has that many sacks, definitely a combined effort lol. A less visible part of it was his development and the fact that the coaching staff didnt put enough time towards him, the HC apparently being of the mindset he should ditch him and start over.

Im hoping some of the sideline time has shown him some things as to how to be more cognoscente of the pocket and how to move in it. Cutler did both a good job of showing how to move up, and not back in the pocket, but also a bad job of actually getting rid of the ball and avoiding and how to slide and keep his feet planted without turnign into a statue. So maybe he got to see the good and bad things that will make him better in the pocket, one can only hope.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t know about 2016, but before that he moved into sacks far too often. There’s a video out there called all of RTs sacks (for a given year), it shows lots of bad pocket presence on sacks, but he also did some good things moving around on his highlight reels.

I think he doesn’t have best pocket presence, but he’s not terrible, and other factors, which you mentioned contributed to it.

Being taught the Marino shuffle would help too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You could be right, but gonna stick with not a whole lot of moves like this guy’s in Tanny (but them a white guy without them as well).

  70. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

My biggest complaint is that Kiko seems slow to diagnose plays and Gase kind of alluded to that in the article Tim posted, although Gase didn’t word it that way. Like most of the team, he looked on fire that last Pats game though. He was destroying those little wide receiver screens. It’s hard to tell how much of his success / failure is on him, coaching, or both.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Kiko has his ups and downs
As a whole I just don’t think he is consistent enough to be in the food long term

    • D's avatar D says:

Its definately his play diagnosis, i have seen it several times. He recovers well because he is a helluva athlete, but between that and not being very “football smart” he isnt always doing what he needs to or being where he needs to be and is playing a step behind the play. You cant do that with players like Gronk or you will be destroyed.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one except, Dion Jordan, can cover Gronk😉

      • D's avatar D says:

Kiko has the athletic ability to do it, but those things i mentioned above make him look like he cant. Gronk is cover-able for a guy like Kiko, he just cant be at a disadvantage of being a step or half step off the play.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, what you’re saying is what Gase said about Kiko in coverage. Trust your ability and get up on those guys and be aggressive, don’t wait to react to what they do.

  72. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m also not saying Tanny is great or good at pocket presence. I’m just saying the degree to how bad it actually is, is overblown. I’m sure everyone looks terrible to Dan Marino’s pocket presence. That comparison needs to stop. No one in the league had the ninja pocket moves that Marino had.

Tanny’s pocket management sucks. From not identifying free rushers…to not setting protections right…to not getting the ball out quick enough…to taking unnecessary sacks. People love to rip the OL because it’s easier than ripping their QB, but Tannehill has never been good INSIDE the pocket. Jay Cutler came in with almost no practice time, no time behind his OL, and an OL that was in shambles most of the season and still looked twice as good as Tannehill ever has. But then….what do I know.

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,
Yep, cutler has always thrown bad INTs, but I think that has always had more to do with his breakdown in mechanics than poor pocket management. Tanny has also thrown his share of bad picks over the years too. I think they brought in a new coach who is supposed to be good at coaching pocket management, so maybe Tanny will take a step forward. I do believe we saw him improve in this area in 2016. Hopefully, the OL will get better too.

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Kiko doesn’t have short burst quickness. Guys get separation on him. If he can get up on them and use his hands, he may have a chance. But, I saw lots of receivers make moves on him 5 yards downfield and lose him. His athleticism isn’t anything special. It’s pretty avarege. With how the NFL works nowadays, you need that short area quick burst ability, or you’re gonna get beat. I saw them stop using him in coverage and have a safety do it last year because Kiko was getting beat consistently. Draft Derwin James if he’s there, and watch that kid blow shit up.

The way I read that is that the Dolphins were locked in on picking Harris, not that other teams tried to trade with us to draft him. It doesn’t really matter anyway, he’s ours, and we both have to hope he shows a lot more than he showed us last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“The Dolphins had two teams call with interest in trading up to the 22nd overall pick once the team was on the clock, but they were locked in on Harris at that point. “Honestly we really did not talk much about what they were offering because this was a player that everybody in the building – from personnel to coaches – if you see the video of the room, everyone is going crazy.”

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly – I don’t know what in there makes you think they wanted Harris. The 1st sentence is saying that despite the interest by other teams to trade into that pick, the Dolphins were locked in on Harris at that point. We didn’t talk about what they were offering, because we wanted Harris. I see nothing in that paragraph that shows the other team wanted Harris. It’s possible they did, but you can’t glean that from that paragraph

    Mike,
I’m just laughing to myself. Every bad critique of Tanny on this website had been said ad nauseum by pretty much anyone I heard talk about Cutler for the last 10+ years. Then Cutler gets here and somehow he’s this huge upgrade and his weaknesses are now strengths.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I did see some instances where Cutler was pretty good at sensing pressure and moved in the pocket, but there were also about 10-15 other times in the game where he was just backpedaling and throw off his back foot even when there wasn’t pressure. Bottom line is Cutler just wasn’t very good, and although the final stat line somewhat resembled Tanny’s, Tannehill was so much better in ’16 than Cutler was in ’17.

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Right. He wasn’t this head and shoulders upgrade that people are making him out to be.
