2018 NFL Draft – Running Backs

The defense has been covered, and finally, we’re going to look at some offensive players.  The first installment is the running backs.  We recently signed long time all pro running back Frank Gore to a 1 YR contract.  We found out we have a very talented ballcarrier in 2nd YR player Kenyan Drake after we traded away Jay Ajayi.  Drake surpassed Ajayi’s production last year, finishing the season with 644 yards rushing on 133 carries with a nice 4.8 YPC and 3 rushing TD’s.  In addition, Drake caught 32 passes for 239 yards and 1 receiving TD.  The thing that worries me about Drake is durability.  I’m not convinced Drake is a 300+ carry back, but going by the way Gase has used his RB’s at each stop, he seems to prefer a stable of backs, with staggered use.  One back will get more carries, but it’s not a big ratio, maybe less than 2:1.  I’m pretty sure we will be drafting a RB in this draft, and it might even be as early as the 2nd or 3rd RD.   DEN recently released RB C.J. Anderson, who played for Gase while he was the OC in Denver.  If we sign Anderson, that would really push RB to the back burner in this draft, but at this point, it hasn’t happened, and it may not happen at all.  So let’s see who is out there in this draft!  This is in no particular order by the way . . .

Sony Michel  5’11 220  Georgia

rose-bowl-football-6ea7b193c2c5638a

Considered by some as this year’s Alvin Kamara.  Smooth runner who catches the ball very well out of the backfield.  Played in 8 games as a true Freshman, he became a starter his Sophomore year at Georgia.  His Senior season was his best, finishing with 1227 yards and 16 TD’s facing the best competition in the SEC.  After watching kamar last year, I would swear he must have ran a 4.3 at the combine, but like Sony Michel, he ran a 4.54.  Michel is not the “power back” type some are looking for, in fact, his skill set isn’t all that different than Kenyan Drake’s.  He runs with good vision and find open spaces and has the patience to let blocks develop (Unlike Ajayi!)  Michel is rated at 5.91 by NFL.com and is expected to go around RD 2.  He’s probably either the 3rd or 4th back taken, behind Barkley, Guice and maybe Ronald Jones.

**********************************************************************************

Rashaad Penny 5’11 220   San Diego State

9301359_web1_20160910-073-20kickofftd-8x101

Talk about production! No running back was more productive than Rashaad Penny in 2017.  2248 yards on a very NFL like workload of 289 carries and 23 TD’s.  Plus, he added another 135 yards receiving on 19 receptions and another 2 TD’s, for a total of 25 offensive TD’s.  Unbelievable!  Penny ran a quick 4.46 at the combine, but the vertical jump and the bench press were a little disappointing.  The biggest knock on Penny, fair or unfair, is the level of competition he faced at SD State in the Mountain West Conference.  Penny is also expected to be a taken around the 2nd RD, and in my mind, I’ve reserved RD 2 for a TE.  Penny was rated at 5.85 by NFL.com

***********************************************************************************

Bo Scarbrough  6’1 232  Alabama

scarbrough-bo-123116-usnews-getty-ftr_mr4c0tg2i8rs1u1yj4oc52ijj

Here’s a big boy for ya!  Scarbrough is eerily similar to Derrick Henry, who also played for Alabama, but mostly because of the size.   While Scarbrough is a couple of inches shorter, he’s still a tall back at 6’1, and weighs just about 10 lbs less than the larger Henry.  Unlike Henry though, Scarbrough was just a part of the stable at Alabama, while Henry was the workhorse.Bo’s best season was actually his Sophomore year, where he tallied 812 on and 11 TD’s on 125 carries.  Scarbrough is a good short yardage specialist who can push the pile for a big first down, and has great explosion and leaping ability to get that TD, Scarbrough ran a 4.52 at the combine, along with a very impressive 40″ vertical and 129″ broad jump.  Scarborough will be a mid to late RD pick, somewhere between RD 4-6.  At the moment, we don’t have a 5th RD pick, but we do have two 4th RD picks, so it’s feasible.

*************************************************************************************

Kalen Ballage 6’1 227  Arizona State

kalen_ballage_utah-620x370

Another big back, and also, another part time player.  You could look at the fact that these guys are part time players 2 ways, one that they are talented enough to warrant a workhorse role, or two, that they have fresh legs and plenty of mileage left for whatever NFL team drafts them.  Ballage is a talented back who moves very well for a big back, and has excellent hands and can play on all 3 downs in the NFL.  He’s also a kick returner, so that versatility is definitely a plus.  Just to illustrate how good a receiver he is, his Junior season he had 126 carries for 536 yards and 14 TD’s and 44 receptions for 469 yards and 1 TD.  Ballage ran a 4.46 at the combine, and this Swiss army knife is expected to be drafted around the 3rd or 4th RD.  Ballage is rated at 5.46 on NFL.com

**********************************************************************************

Nick Chubb  5’11 228  Georgia

USP NCAA FOOTBALL: TENNESSEE AT GEORGIA S FBC USA GA

Did someone ask for a power back???  You know who you are, and this guy may be the back you’re looking for.  Chubb is a powerful north south runner who can break tackles to get more yardage and move a pile.  Chubb was the thunder while Michel was the lightning.  Chubb finished his Senior year with 1345 yards on 223 carries with 15 TD’s.  he has been the bellcow at Georgia since his Freshman year.  Chubb performed very well at the combine, running a 4.52, putting up 29 reps of 225, an impressive 38.5″ vertical and 128″ broad jump.  He has tremendous lower body power, an important factor for being a power runner, and he has the upper body strength to push off would be tacklers.  Chubb is expected to go around RD 2, which is a tough RD for us, because I have that round reserved for our new TE, thank you!  Chubb is rated at 5.79 on NFL.com

***************************************************************************************

So that’s my 5, and there were some tough cuts to be sure, like Royce Freeman, Kerryon Johnson,  Ronald Jones and a few others.  I didn’t include Saquon Barkley or Derrius Guice, because I think both will be 1st RD picks.  Next up is TE’s, and I may actually have to do a combo article of TE’s and WR’s, we’re running out of time with the draft being next Thursday!  OMG, that’s only a week away!

    Tim,
Hey, you know i’m all about getting OL, but even I can’t justify giving up multiple picks for a guard. Now, if he’s there at #11…take him if you want…but I can’t give up a couple 1’s and a 2 for one. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody said multiple picks. I replied to James and a 4th. The other trade might only be a 2nd to get to #5 and for Nelson I would do that. I think he’s going to be one of those top guards for a decade.

  2. D's avatar D says:

Man if the Giants do sign Dez, putting him in there with OBJ, and Sterling Sheperd will make a sick receiving group. All the giants would have to do to complete that offense is draft Barkley then add some OL help in day 2.

  3. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We’re not trading up for Nelson.

Then you gotta wonder about the devotion and tenderness given to 17. So many lies. Why lie? Just don’t say anything. Gase professed love for Jarvis right out in front of him getting traded. Quit fucking lying to me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase finished the season not happy with Landry’s last game. Do you remember the “it’s hard to reach him” comment?

    Tim,
I don’t trade up for a guard. Period. Lol
    ****
Be happy as hell if we draft the kid though!

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m concerned we may have a coach who struggles to “reach” certain guys. I think the really good coaches/teachers can usually find a way to reach pretty much anyone. Parcells was great at it.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I said it earlier in the week and I’ll say it again: I’m beginning to believe there’s a fair chance that Quenton Nelson gets pushed down to us @ R1P11. Now that ol’ Horse Face is looking to trade out (likely to a team wanting a QB), the chances have increased that it may happen.

And NO… PLEASE don’t trade up!!!

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

By the way I’m not saying trade up for Nelson, just that if we do he would be on my board. Who knows we might really want Smith or Fitzpatrick. That puts us in a spot to get them easily.

For me it’s about adding good players, not just having multiple picks.

The Dolphins would need to send the Broncos at least its second round pick (No. 42) to make a deal with Denver to move up from 11 to 5. Trust me, this is being discussed.

    😆

Trust me, OMAR HATES TANNEHILL THAT BADLY!!!

Omar Kelly @OmarKelly 35m35 minutes ago
I’m told that former QB David Garrard is coming of retirement in a attempt to resume his football career. Trust me, the Dolphins will come knocking to push or replace Ryan Tannehill. He’s still got IT.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Did Garland ever actually have “it”? Lol

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Parcells was a very good motivator. He found ways to coach guys. I’m sure he cut guys too. Feel better? Lol

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Dammit. Garrard not Garland. F’ing computer thingie.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve got nothing personal against Omar, I’m just tired of his agenda and his act. I think he could have been reporting for NFL Network right now if he wasn’t so controversial and ego-driven. You’d swear he’s still fresh out of college with the way he behaves.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Regardless of you feel about Tannehill, the team has said multiple times he’s the starter. Just go from there. It’s similar with Eli with the Giants. Doesn’t mean don’t add a QB but it doesn’t have to early 1st rd. I’d rather add a player who helps us win games this year.

    • D's avatar D says:

OK then draft him and Trade Tanny….. i never thought id see the day you were advocating for this, way to come round Tim!!!!!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      Here’s how I feel about Tannehill, truly…

HOPE for the best, PREPARE for the worst. And I agree, we don’t have to draft a QB in the 1st round this year.

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree we dont have to but im not opposed to them doing that if they feel its best for the organization. I wouldn’t care if he sat behind Tanny all year, or 2 for that matter. Get the players you want whatever round you feel like you need to and at the cost that is acceptable. If its stay put and hope for the best, so be it, if its trade back because no one really flips your switch, do it, if its trade up using the draft capital you can afford to, do it. There is no simpler method than make the play you need to to get what you need to.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So long as we don’t trade up for a QB, I’m good. But even if we do, I’ll be excited for our future with that QB… while knowing that either of Gase, Tannenbuam, or Grier (maybe ALL of them) won’t be with us in ’19… unless Tannehill goes down early.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not prepared for the worst. LOL

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, your 7:35 post is where I’m at. Add players you think make your team better. It’s not really much different than FA other than that they’re college players with no pro experience. But they will be soon. It’s about competing to win not about draft strategy. Hey look at us with our 11 picks, 3 made the big club, 5 are on the PS and 3 got cut. Yippee!!!!

How many rookies do you think makes this team, this is for everyone?

We also need a Kicker for sure, someone has to do it. LOL

I sure would love to add a great TE.

  20. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lb, cb, te, to me are most pressing, then depth at ol and DL maybe s

If Gase sees a QB he thinks he can develop ..ok

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

As I posted last night, I don’t think it would be wise to trade up this year. Too many jobs are on the line in year 3 of Gase (I’m talking about Gase, Tannenbaum, and Grier), we’ve got some holes to fill, and I just can’t see trading up for a QB (squandering NOW Draft capital) who may (or may not) be sitting for a year or two behind Tannehill before making any kind of impact.

Hey, I could be COMPLETELY wrong (wouldn’t be the first time!!!). Sit @ R1P11 and get the BPA… QB or otherwise.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure Ross is looking at it like that. We sometimes act like we have no talent and can’t compete with our roster. That thought is BS. What positions have to be filled or replaced in order to compete?

I’m starting to think this QB class is fools gold. There is no clear #1 and that’s a red flag. But there are some other potential studs who most draftniks have rated higher than the QBs.

We can’t trade up for him! Why not? If he’s the best prospect on your board what’s the problem?

What if we came away with a 1, 3 and 4 that all contribute in 2018 and a couple of PS guys, would you think that’s the end of the world? Extreme I know. LOL

Who are you replacing? That was my main challenge. I can do 3-4 but how does the draft replace more than that this year?
    ———-
Alright, being serious this time around… and in no particular order…

    1) TE… and we ALL know it! And we might need TWO of them: one a blocker (if we don’t bring Fasano back in wave-3 of FA), one a TRUE seam-threat and early.
    2) Backup QB at some point, preferably within the first 4 rounds.
    3) RB: Gore is likely a 1-year rental until he retires, and Gase “SAYS” he wants a RB by committee. Drake is one, but Gore isn’t the future.
    4) DT: I think Godchaux ATE of off Suh’s constant double-teams (not trying to take anything away from Godchaux), we’re still waiting for Jordan Phillips’ balls to drop (meaning, CONSISTENCY), and Suh leaves HUGE shoes to fill.
    5) LB: We’ve got depth, but only 1 clear-cut starter in Kiko. Let us HOPE that Raekwon is already back to 100% and ready to rock… meaning we’ve got only 2 clear-cut starters at that point.
    6) K: YOU brought it up… and you ARE right!
    7) O-Line: We’ve now got THREE projected interior starters, who are all on the wrong side of 30 years old.
    8) Safety: We’ve got TWO low/box Safeties in Reshad and TJ. It would be nice to find a TRUE ‘centerfield’/BALLHAWK(!!!) Safety.
    9) Gunner: STs are 1/3 of the game… and it won’t be so easy to replace Michael Thomas in that role.

I went to the game here in ‘94. I had to leave at halftime. There were so many assholes in the crowd. Somebody was gonna get their ass kicked, and it was probably gonna be me. Lol

The worst part was that they were kicking our asses in the first half. We scored our first TD just as I was walking out of the stadium to make it 6-28. The second half we came back big time but still lost like 38-35. I’d taped the game as always, and I ended up watching the second half 3 hours later at home.

I’m glad our schedule doesn’t end with a bunch of divisional games. We had 4 out of 6 to end the year last year, and our last 3 were divisional in ’16. They are more evenly dispersed this year.

And our bye is week 10.

GOTTA AGREE with those saying the Oct. 14 game vs. the Bears or the Oct. 21 game vs. the Lions are the two best choices for the Fest. September is the height of Hurricane season, so those games should NOT be considered (plus the heat is awful in September). AND the Jets game, Nov. 4, is a distant (but possible) third option, since it’s our ONLY home game that month. PLUS, the nice thing about the October games is the fact that we WON’T be mathematically eliminated from the Playoffs by week 7 or week 8.

  51. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Rob, no I’m not rehabbing homes. I bought a place in Rockledge 12 years ago because my ex-wife wanted to be closer to her family in Melbourne but after two years she hated it and wanted to move back to WPB. the market dropped out in 08-10 and still hasn’t come back so I have been upside down for the last 10 years. I had a renter in it for 8 years, he was a pretty good renter until the last year when his mentally disabled son with emotional problems came to live with him and his new wife. The kid destroyed the place and they bailed in the middle of the night. Every door in the house was broken or missing, holes from punches and kicks in every wall. call the carpet and flooring ruined, all the window treatments ruined cabinet doors ripped off, etc. Plus the roof started leaking because of a tree branch rubbing on the roof and they didn’t tell me because of the damage the son had caused. I found out when I stopped getting the rent and tried to contact them, finally driving up to see them in person to discover from the neighbors what had gone down. The roof leak caused mold to grow and I had to replace a bunch of drywall and replace the roof as well. (rood needed to be replaced anyway, it was 18 years old asphalt shingle) but this all went down right after my divorce 3 years ago when I had been wiped out financially by the ex. so it has been vacant and I have been fixing it in my spare time, with my spare money since……Not enough spare of either.

The straw that broke my back was last year I was approached by one of the neighbor’s brothers who wanted to live in the community. He offered me a fair price to take it “as is” we went all the way to escrow and inspections when the inspector discovered the house has Polypropelene piping which was recalled in the 90’s it was the biggest class action lawsuit in the history of the US. If MY inspector had found out or I had discovered it before 2009 they would have paid to replace all the pipe and repaired the drywall / paint at no cost to me. They did not. SOoooo the buyers back would not close on the place because no-one will insure it with the bad plumbing. The plumbing will cost me about 8K to replace and I don’t have it so I have been doing it little by little this year. I will be done this summer!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

sounds like you stepped in one bucket of shit after another, the good news is homes are back! it’s definitely a sellers market, what little foreclosures are left are going for absurd prices. you may be surprised at what you can sell it for,

I rehab homes and do most everything myself, I’m also a Realtor. Plumbing isn’t that hard, neither is drywall, you tube it.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am an electrician by trade, but I have been an estimator / project manager for a general contractor for the lat 20 years. I can do plumbing and drywall. It’s just a pain in the ass because even though I “KNOW” how to do it I still make the stupid mistakes you learn not to make when you do it every day. (like catching the insulation on fire while sweating a coupling in the wall! DOH! ) It just takes time and when you don’t even have a helper to hand you stuff it take that much more time.

If I drop this screw and have to climb up and down this ladder one more time today I’m done! LOL

    That’s it.

Perfect storm. The housing market dropped EVERYWHERE by more than 1/2 in some places, but at the same time they closed the space shuttle program and laid off 10000 high paid workers in the counter and the following year the pentagon cut back 60% on the research and development budget and the big 4 defense contractors all have their R&D labs in the county. They laid off another 8000 engineers and support. it was a devastating two year period financially for the county. and property values have still not recovered at the rate of other areas.

The good news is the space center is up and running again with private companies using it so the local economy up there is coming back and property values have spiked this year. I MAY be able to sell if for “only” 20 grand less than I paid for it.

Chris Perkins has an article saying that DT is our top need and that we need to select TWO in this draft because Suh is gone. I just don’t see it. We need another body there, but I don’t agree with him that it’s a MUST to pick one early and another later.

It is convenient how folks want to reference how we went from 10-6 with Tannehill to 6-10 without him. But, they fail to mention that prior to those two years we were also 7-9, 8-8, 8-8, 6-10 WITH him. Tannehill is not and never has been the difference maker between wins and losses. His 1.4(?) TDs a game has rarely been what gets us a win. He doesn’t usually lose games for us, but he doesn’t win them either. Enjoy! 🙂

Our seats would have been cheaper and/or better if we went with the Titans rather than the Jets last year. Bears on a downturn (even if a big city) and sorta guessing Detroit ain’t much of a travel team. And when the Mid West folks Florida transplant they go West Coast.

    • D's avatar D says:

Didnt look all that bad to me.

Lazard is a really good late WR selection, good big bodied receiver who should help us in the RZ.

Green would probably be a hybrid DE/DT for us, and play a little 3 and 5 tech. In that role he would be pretty solid, he is a good pass rusher and has a knock for timing his jump to swap down passes.

Henderson is a pretty good latter half FS pickup, and someone we are said to have liked when we have met with him.

Herndon has a lot of upside as a TE, but he is kind of raw at the moement.

O’Daniel is a good LB prospect, those are all pretty solid picks.

I think if you have a problem taking a QB with the 1st pick you have a problem with this draft, but if not then this is a decent draft.

I liked what I saw when I saw Lazard play. He was making plays all over the place. They were totally trusting him to get the 50/50 balls, and he always came down with the ball. He’s not fast, but I saw him get behind some DB’s too.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree he’s a steal in the 7th. I think he goes no later than the 5th, but I guess we’ll see. He could be an O.G. type of player for us.

If i had to guess off of visits by our team with prospects, they are targeting in the first round these position in these rounds.

QB: Rounds 1-3, with a preference on selecting one in the first. Reason being they have been heavily investigating the 1st round prospects but they have a few others they have looked into that are day two projctions, so they are keeping themselves open to fall back to one of those picks. I think we for certain will have a QB selection in one of those rounds. I do think the backup plan is there because they will not sell the farm to get one of the top 4, but i think it says to me they are willing to move up at the right price to get one.

LB: Rounds 1,2 or mid to late day 3. I think this says they might have some backup plan outside of the draft to get another starting caliber player if they have to but they prefer to draft one. Their focus has been on projected day 1 or two, and then with later round guys who might have some upside but are not start right off guys. They may also have more faith in someone we have on the roster to step up than maybe we do.

DB: Rounds 1, or mid to late day 3. The look to have been doing a good bit of research on guys who will go in the first, and then they have backup prospects they have looked into that are projected 4-6th. The S prospects they have looked into have been mostly middle round guys, so its possible we see a S in 3-4th.

RB: The RB’s they have looked into have bene mostly day 2 selections and then some fall back kind of option in mid to late day 3. I think this says they intend to draft a guy and someone that contributes right off. Even there latter round guy they have looked at have high potential to contribute as well.

OL: The OL prospects they have brought in are all over the place so it seems their target for OL is get in where they fit them in. Thats not to say that a lot of the other positions aren’t the same way but most the others had focused projection levels, and OL was very wide range of projected rounds and even some UDFA projections. So they may be looking at a potential next year starter, or just depth and better next man up talent.

WR: All the WR’s they looked at were day 3 guys so that kinda says to me that WR wont be a position they try to force a round peg into a square hole, they will get a guy with good potential when they can get him but they have bigger fish to fry first. I dont think that means they would look a gift from the football gods in the mouth, like Ridley falling to us in the second, etc, but i do think they ust feel somewhat comfortable with the guys they have.

DT/DE: All have been somewhat scattered about too, looks like they are looking to possibly a stud player there, but also looking to build behind what they have. Id say they plan on selecting one, but i couldn’t guess where from their visit patterns.

This is all just assumptions looking at their visit tracker and trying to find patterns. Could be completely BS but i have found them to pick people they have visited with on a pretty high percentage, so i wouldn’t completely count it out. Also as i pointed out once before, the visit tracker on Walterfootball, that i used to draw these conclusions isnt always complete, so there might be more visits that i dont know about.

    • D's avatar D says:

Crap i forgot probably the most important position for peeps here on the board.

TE: I think Mike, you will get your wish and we will select one, and i feel pretty good abotu you being happy with it. We have focused our visits on the top guys in this draft, we seemingly have met with all the top 10ish guys. So i dont think it will be some no name guy in th 7th round when we finally select someone, they seem to be wanting to target someone who will contribute this year.

I dont necessarily think the cold weather is an advantage as much as it is a disadvantage to some teams. I mean if the Bills play GB at home, GB probably think the weather is really nice and plays a great game, but a team like Miami looks like someone replaced our players blood with molasses. I believe we have a real disadvantage in cold weather and would be all for them taking the guys up there a week ahead and making them play tag football in their underwear outside so by the time they got around to the real game they though “damn its warm today”..

D, I read you book above and only have one comment.

You cannot guess based upon visits who they are going to take. They have in the past taken guys they never met with and have passed on many, many that they have met with.

    • D's avatar D says:

There have been more that they have taken that they have met with than otherwise. Im not saying that there arent any times when it doesnt happen and notice i wasnt saying we will take this person or that person, i said they are focusing on certain position in certain rounds.

    • D's avatar D says:

Also sure, they have had plenty of people they have passed on, when they took someone else, thats kind of how it works, but if you go check you will see a lot of times the selections made come from the list of those we have met with, still that wasnt the point of what i wrote up there.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – As to your 3:50PM, I hope and pray you’re right. As far as your 3:54PM, a disadvantage for the visiting team = home field advantage. If teams have a tough time acclimating to your home climate, than it is an advantage. It may not be huge, in fact, if we ever get a legit TE, I think we’ll be ready to rumble with any cold weather team in their house.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think it plays into disadvantages, not necessarily advantages. You are right though the home field advantage is a real deal. I mean its the field you feel most comfortable with, the crowd is behind you (most of the time), etc so it does have psychological effects, but that cold does to, but for another cold weather team it doesn’t necessarily. I promise you we look like shit playing in the cold, so i dont discount what kind of disadvantage it poses for us specifically.

    ————————————
I disagree, our heat and humidity has helped up plenty in the past, but yes competition level is not necessarily overcome by a advantage or disadvantage of weather. Its almost like you guys arent copping to the fact that there are tons of different factors of advantage/disadvantage. I mean you have player injury disadvantages, mismatch advantages, coaching advantages/disadvantages, weather, home field, jet lag, etc etc etc. They all add up to a likelihood a team plays well against another team, but it also doesn’t rule out a team overcoming all of those to win or lose regardless. Its almsot as if you are saying oh well they had the weather advantage they should never lose lol. You guys know thats just pure silly.
