Welcome to Miami Minkah Fitzpatrick!

roger-goodellminkah-fitzpatrick-499bd61c84f31f61

The Dolphins managed to get perhaps the top DB in the 2018 NFL Draft and stayed put at #11 to do it as well.  As usual, admittedly, Minkah wasn’t my pick, but also as usual, I can see why we got him.  I think it’s clear the FO, Gase, and defensive coaches alike, all felt like we don’t really have that deep safety.  Minkah is not only going to be a deep safety, he can cover in the slot, on the outside like a CB, and may possibly be the guy to cover TE’s.  We’ll see, not going to get too far ahead of myself here.

There are many positives to glean from this selection, he thoroughly solidifies our secondary, and our CB’s will look even better knowing they have a guy they can rely on to pick up deep receivers in our zone defense.  There’s also a negative.  We just signed safety T.J. McDonald to a 4YR/$24M contract through 2021. Why?  We have all-pro safety Reshad Jones, and if they wanted to draft a safety with our first pick, which is fine, why sign McDonald to a 4 YR contract.  The only thing that makes sense is that T.J. McDonald will be our hybrid S/LB and most likely nickel LB.  Can he handle that role?  We’ll find out this season, for better or for worse.  I’m not trying to knock the Fitzpatrick pick in the least, but I would love to see what the plan is, and ya know, hope there actually IS a plan.

In the meantime – Welcome to Miami Minkah Fitzpatrick, may you be blessed with a long and healthy career All-Pro career here in Miami!  Go #29!

  37. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

SMH at NFLN. They rated Fitz as the #1 DB to be taken in the top 10. We take him at 11 and we get an A-. Cleveland takes the #3 or 4th DB at #4 and still get a B. GB takes the #4 or 5th rated DB on their list seven picks after us and they get an A+. I don’t get it. Shouldn’t the team drafting the #1 DB later than where he was projected get an A+ or at least an A?

  38. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I hope no one trades up above us to nab a TE. Especially the Pats.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do. I could see dime packages like this:
        CB Howard
        CB Tank/Lippett
        NB McCain
        SS Jones
        DS Fitz
        NLB McDonald
        LB Alonso

We could move guys around in matchups, blitzes etc.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The plan might not be add and subtract. Having all three safeties provides flexibility and depth. There’s a chance all three are on the field at the same time in sub packages.

  40. Ken's avatar Ken says:

In strict DIME sits??? Who’s riding the pines when our base D is on the field?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know and don’t care, it’s only about 25-30% of the time.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Fitzpatrick is probably eventually going to see more reps than anyone

I don’t see what the conflict is

We don’t have to call a player a particular position to be more effective

In a dime we play 3 safeties
I’m a nickel we can play McDonald at a LB spot
In base D, there’s no mccain and maybe you call McDonald a LB or you have a LB in his place

      It’s a hybrid position
Telvin Smith does that for the jaguars – but we call him a LB

It doesn’t matter what you call the player

  43. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim Knight says:

Which is most of the time. Base defense is not what it once was.
    ———-
But WHAT about our lack of run-D??? I get that this is a passing league, but we struggled against the run last year. How is playing out of our base going to benefit us against the run???

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, really? It’s about what the offense puts on the field. When a team goes 3 WRs and a pass catching TE it’s nickel/dime. Everyone wants a LB who can cover a TE yet most of them can’t do it. We can use big safeties in those situations.

Matt Patricia said recently his defense in NE were in sub packages 90% of the time.

A lot of this has to do with the offense doing it’s job by scoring points and having leads.

  44. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

FACT: our Defense will see more 1st down sits than 2nd, 3rd, or 4th down sits (it’s mathematical). Thus, our BASE D must feature Reshad, TJ, and Minkah.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – With ya 100% I don’t see a lot of snaps for TJ unless he’s playing nickel LB, or even just LB period

  46. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t think you need to trade TJ. With him and Fitzpatrick we have great flexibility on our D. TJ can be at LB or safety and Fitzpatrick can be at CB or safety. I think you will see both of them on the field in multiple roles. They make our D harder to create mismatches against

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bingo! I’m surprised this debate is still going on.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We still have a gaping hole what with who our 3rd starting LB may be. Unless Stephone Anthony has been eating his Wheaties, I see a HOLE.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Well that is kind of what we do around here. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – It’s not a crazy discussion, and it’s not so cut and dry. Does a safety that only plays in nickel and dime sets earn a 4 YR/$24M contract? It’s all about cap allocation, and I’m not sure that’s using the cap money wisely. It’s not about whether anyone cares how much or how little guys are on the field

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I agree with this also, was just wondering about a trade that’s all. The team has a plan, we just don’t know what it is as usual.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Fitzpatrick was BPA. I like Edmunds too but I think they went BPA and it is hard to argue against that
    ————
And THAT, my friend, is why I’m AGAINST strict BPA. Gotta couple BPA with NEED. Now we have a log-jam at Safety, with 5 to 6 other positions that REALLY need to be addressed.

  55. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Really worried about someone trading up with the Colts to #36 or #37 to take a TE. Colts have 3 picks in the 2nd all ready with the latest at #49. They could easily afford to trade down with someone. Though they do need LB, RB & WR and may stay put before there is a run on those positions.

  56. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not trying to muddy the waters here, but if my name is Matt Burke, who/what/where/why do I start with the drafting of Minkah? We MUST to be able to stop the run, and we just lost Suh.

Just some food for thought, nothing more, cats.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean… HELL YEAH(!!!) our sub-packages could ROCK!!! But what about our Base… and what about our run-D?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thus, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see us address the D again here, on day 2 of the Draft!

But GIVE US our TE FIRST!!!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McMillan is one new guy we didn’t have last year. We do have a need for another DT who can play tough inside. But I don’t think drafting Fitz has anything to do with not wanting to play the run better.

Teams don’t play pro-sets like they once did. I wish they did because I preferred that style of football. But they don’t. It’s 3 WR, 4 WR and empty back sets often.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — if I was Matt Burke would be thinking just got the best DB in the draft. Have a nice quartet of DEs as well. And last year’s second rounder at LB is coming back. I’d want some back-up at DT and maybe a LB, but would be thinking could make it work.

  62. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

SHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! MF13, dang. You know you just blew up Jone’s Achilles, McDonald’s Knee and Fitz’s hamstring with that log jamb comment.

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I also we think we ignore that Chase Allen who gives us good size at LB played well in base. But he’s going to be a part-time player and would play more against teams who go big more often. But you need a quality deep secondary to compete in this league. You need flexibility to play all opponents. You don’t need 1st rd picks everywhere to accomplish that.

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If I’m Burke and you just handed me the best DB in the draft to add to my young ascending backfield then I’m trying the be the coach who came up with the famous 4-1-6 “back in the day”

    MF
I hear you but base is no longer always in on first down. Lotta teams throw on first especially in strategic times to mess the d up or generate some Big Mo or a 2-minute drill or after a TO etc.

But after getting Minkah, I think we need a DT for real. After TE, that should be our focus so teams can’t take advantage of our “light” pkg. God and Taylor are already a bit lite in the seat of the pants, so if they are both in, we are sittin ducks for smashmouth.

Heck Phillips plays on skates half the time himself, so he’s no solid wall.
