I watched HOF Miami Dolphins Center Dwight Stephenson stroll to the podium. He looked happy. I know why he was so happy, but I didn’t know then. He then uttered the words with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State. When he said Mike, my heart raced, and then he actually said GEH-Sick-ee, I screamed a a scream of happiness, it’s possible Tim who is about 45 miles away may have heard it. We did what we haven’t been able to do for over a decade since Randy McMichael, we selected a legitimate receiving TE. I’m happy for Brian in NY, his son, and really, I’m happy for Ryan Tannehill and all Dolphins fans, because this is a gamechanger. It’s the secret sauce we’ve been missing for far too long. Gesicki will open up that field for us, because he will be that nightmare that NFL teams struggle most to cover, including our own Dolphins defense. Just his presence on the field will open things up for our RB’s, and our perimeter WR’s. He will command attention, and that will give other players opportunities they haven’t had here. I can’t wait!

What about me boss? In the 3rd RD, The Dolphins selected Ohio State LB Jerome Baker. Baker who is 6’1 229 is a speed player. He’s not a run stopping thumper, but he’s a chase and tackle guy who can also cover pretty well. It will be interesting to see how Baker is used, and not to belabor the point, but where exactly does T.J. McDonald fit in? Seems we keep adding pieces that lessen the need for T.J. with Minkah Fitzpatrick and now LB Jerome Baker. The Dallas Cowboys want a safety , and we just happen to have one, and the Cowboys have pick #116 in the 4th RD, so maybe a deal can made. We could get a DT, RB and maybe a QB, so keep your eye on MTP who has obviously been tied up and must be raring to go, if he’s been untied that is.
So far, we’ve done and excellent job in this draft, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the luxury of saying that. Go DOLPHINS!!
JERSEY STRONG!!!

We did…and if I knew how to copy and paste my early morning post to this new blog, I would repeat it.
FINALLY!
We should have a parade down Biscayne BLVD!
Now that you mention it, can you get that going?
The man can’t block, how hard is it to block? That to me is a red flag, is he shying away from contact on purpose?
So we got rid of Suh because McDonald doesn’t fit? Do I have that right?
Great job Mike E, congrats to Dolphin nation draftee claus has been good to us this year.
Thanks Sonny
Gesicki and Tannehill should be practicing high-pointing the ball in every inch of the end zone tomorrow. No time for parades.
Tannehill said, “great which division is the end zone in?”
Let’s just hope he’s healthy and can play 16 games, if that’s the case, I think we’ll be fine.
Until we can get push up the middle consistently and ferociously, we will not rattle qbs or stop the run. We didn’t do that and haven’t done it with or without Suh for a long time.
IN THE WORDS of Lee Corso, “Not so fast, my friend!”
—–
FIRST of all, this is a very nice analysis, Mike. And I think virtually all of us believe T-Bomb & Pals have upgraded the Dolphins with their first two selections in this draft. But I’m NOT ON BOARD with our 3rd round selection when other, more pressing, needs are obvious. SUCH AS:
1) WHO, among these choices, is going to stuff the run?? –Minus Suh, this Fins’ defense figures to be in trouble stopping the run in 2018.
2) WHO, among these draft picks, is going to be our developmental QB? 3 picks after Baker, the Steelers took Mason Rudolph to groom for their possible QB of the future. I believe Mason COULD have a bigger NFL impact than Baker.
3) WHO, among these draft selections, is going to replace the first Fins’ O-Lineman who goes down with an injury this season?? A total of SIX offensive linemen were taken later in round 3 after the Baker pick. TWO of my fav O-Linemen among this group were Orlando Brown, OT from Oklahoma, taken by the Ravens and Joseph Noteboom, OT from LSU, also taken after Baker. I’d have been happier with either of them in preference to Baker.
4) ANOTHER RUN STUFFER, USF’s Deadrin Senat, went to Atlanta with the 90th pick. We passed on him in favor of Baker.
5)RUNNING Back, also, was completely ignored so far. IF Drake goes down, we are in DEEP SHIT right now!
———
YES, we still have today, the 3rd day of the draft. One shudders to think how many more Isaac Asiata’s the Fins can select today. AND, speaking of today, would THIS be the time to replace our outstanding FG kicker who ONLY missed one kick last season? –We’ll see.
——–
THERE’s still way too many gaping holes to fix today. We are not yet a playoff quality team, not by a long shot.
I think it was the right pick as far as position goes, Having only 6 LBers on the team and needing to have apprx 10 at training camp it’s apparent this was a need pick,
Mike E very good article.
Thinking outside the box.
They really could trade McDonald into the draft, but I doubt they can get a 4th for him now.
Maybe a 5th.
Would that be good enough? I think they were very unhappy with McD’s play last year and said so and have proved it with their picks this year so far.
If we get a 5th for him we could stay put with that or try to pkg our 6th and 7th picks with the 5th to move into the 4th if anybody would be stupid enough to do that with us.
How many picks by round do we have, please? I’m seeing contradictory numbers. I thought we had 2-4s, 6, 2-7s. Yes?
I think 2-4’s, one 6 and 2 sevens
Yes
Ian Thomas
Luke Falk
Bo Scabrough
John Kelly
Maurice Hurst
Those are the top names on the Pork Radar
Jimmy Graham can’t block either
And he makes an offense potent
Absolutely. It’s like all of a sudden we forgot how little production we’ve had from the TE spot.
Lots of holes for awhile now and thus a flawed team for years to say the least.
I like the new direction. …i’m a Homer.
Top Quality left:
Hurst, Norton, Settle, RJ McIntosh, Poona Ford at DT
Ballage, Hines, Wadley, Walton, Scarbrough at RB
Schultze, Thomas at TE
Wyatt Teller at OG
Maybe we could trade McD to the Giants or Colts, or somebody else with a total lack of talent who needs lots of bodies.
C’mon Sonny, don’t be the grinch who stole the draft! Suh was here, he played well, but now he’s gone. Gotta get past that. I know you hate T-Hill too, but maybe he surprises you this season. We got Geh-sick-ee! lol
I’m just having fun. I can’t help myself.
When you think of Tannehill- Guess Icky lol
Fun on sir, don’t let me get in your way. 🙂
Naples – I really like Ballage, I see David Johnson light
and that’s all we need … ballage runs like a deer and catches the ball well and he’s a pretty big kid.
We didn’t get Gesicki to become a power running team anyway. He’ll have to stick his nose in their periodically to keep ‘me honest but otherwise he’s a receiver.
I’m not saying we’re trading T-Mac for sure, but you have to admit the pieces we’ve added lessen his value here. A 4th would probably be pretty steep, but since we don’t a have a 5th, maybe we could squeeze a 5th out of someone desperate for a safety. Or maybe we just keep him.
Having a legit seam threat te changes the entire complexion of the o….and hate to say this, but opens up those wr screens that had limited success for us but not NE.
In many ways, I think this is huge…chain mover.
I’m at breakfast and a waitress approaching another just said, I’m (whatever she said her name is) – I’ll be your guyses waitress
Sorry shouldn’t have been a reply
LOL – Should be a fun breakfast

I’m hoping we get more than 16 games this season. 😉
There ya go girl! Well said!
Agreed… good call.
Oh so you expect to see him in the preseason?
Jbb Mike E. chill
Draft theme: 3rd down conversion draft
Agreed?
You could say that Piggy – I think Gesicki opens up more big play capabilities for the offense, but should also be a 3rd down target. Baker may be in the running for nickel LB, so yes.
Both sides of the ball.
Covering TEs and converting with a TE
Yes..both sides of the ball.
Does that mean I owe p… a beer?
Yes, but as a fellow homer, you are off the hook.
Lol…that’s ok, I’ll gladly pay this debt.
In OD’s day, football players played both ways barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways, and used a whole pig for a ball. The halcyon days when the team was owned by Mr. Slate and coached by the Demigod Shula, Lord of Turf Toe who went into every draft with 23 picks and never missed on one and always picked the fans’ favorite draftees.
Miami’s run defense with Suh:
2017 – 18th
2016 – 29th
2015 – 27th
Maybe Suh, as an individual, wasn’t the key to run defense? Maybe a team is more important? Last year certain people bitched about linebacker play – team drafts to fix the linebackers and the same people bitch about getting rid of players that didn’t fix the problem, whose play and salary, coincidently, certain people bitched about. I guess everything looks better in the rear-view mirror.
I think Mo Hurst is going to go very early 4th RD, but if he happens to fall to us, he could be a great risk/reward pick there. Oh, and Wyo would be really happy too. lol
At DT I think we can afford the risk
Some people had him as the top DT
Yup!
LOL Piggy – We’re channeling thoughts I see
9:33 is the Hurst post time
I won’t be around for most of the 4th round
But I will probably check in later
Is Hurst the heart guy?
Yes
I’m out for the rest of a.m. cheers.
Later Krishna – Enjoy the draft!
Ty…be back later
I don’t know if the dolphins want a big WR
But here are two 6’5 wrs on the board
Allen Lazzard and Equinamious St Brown
Sweet Baby Jesus – Who names their kid Equinameous!?!
I like Lazard, excellent red zone WR. He gets the ball
Late pick though, probably 6th.
I want to buy his jersey just to have both first and last name in the jersey and see what it looks like – you have to shrink the font by half
Wrong Hurst!
But I like this one 2!
They can just keep going with the BPA as far as I’m concerned!
Although I think there were better players on the board than our last pick?????
If the boys in the front office are looking for a rumble tumble north south guy to carry the rock, Bo Scarbrough is still out there from Alabama. The boy does nothing but move the chains! Can’t believe he is still there. Looking around for something/someone to sacrifice to these football gods!
Looking for a sacrifice may I suggest Levante Carroo
LMAO…
PHELON SAYS “I guess everything looks better in the rear view mirror.”

WHAT??? — Have you been ASLEEP during the last 8 seasons???

AND I will NEVER apologize for the Dolphins successes “back in the day.” The Dolphins were the winningest pro sports franchise in the 1970’s AND I’m damn proud of what they accomplished, even if their successes fly in the face of certain agendas. And to those who call Ross “A GREAT OWNER,” I’d reply “you are what your record says you are.” Ross’s 65-81 won lost record and ZERO playoff wins ARE THE WORST IN DOLPHINS’ HISTORY. In this era of “Alternate Facts,” has losing turned into winning? –For some, the answer is “YES!”
NOW let’s plug a few more holes today!
I just don’t think OL is a priority OD
And I don’t really think it should be after we made the changes we did prior to the draft
It would have been one thing had the right player fell to us early
I would not have passed on nelson in the 1st or Hernandez in the 2nd (well maybe I pass on hernande in favor of Gesicki) but after that, not really a whole lot of meat on that bone
I just want to add good players
And to do that you can’t have laser focus on one unit
Wah, wah, wah…..
I’ve been a Miami fan since I was 10. 1970. I loved the 70’s teams, too. And the Marino years were awesome, even though they won no championships. And all of that has no bearing on today. Constant bitching about the ownership and how things used to be is just stupid and pointless.
And let’s not forget, Miami began it’s downward spiral into mediocrity under the Robbie’s and Shula. Miami’s winning percentage by the decade:
1970’s – .726
1980’s – .622
1990’s – .594
2000’s – .494
But that’s why we’re fans. You be a fan the way you want.
Draft theme: Impact players
OD, just think what would have happened with the franchise, had not the World Football League stole 3 of our core players… That broke my heart as a young fan. But that is the past, all we can do is push forward and pray that before we die, we can see our beloved Fins in another Superbowl again!
Okay so you are from my generation
Mine too 😉 I have cover of sports illustrated of those three wrapped in cellophane so as not to get ruined by tears.
reading the wish lists posted above (for the 4th)…
only problem – our two picks are at the end of the 4th, most of the wish list guys will be gone.
If we want Falk or one of those DT’s I don’t think they’ll be there when we pick. BPA in 4th if we don’t move up… live with whoever it is.
Lots of good 2nd tier QBs still there: Falk, Lauletta, White, Benkert, Ferguson. No need to panic. All of them I like better than Rudolph. Falk is probably my favorite of the group but still good talent available
I got to say
Falk may not have the arm strength of the guys that went in the first round, but he is much better at some of the other traits a qb needs
Franlky none of those guys were worth salivating over
I would have taken one of he dropped to 11 but I’m pretty sure We will get a lot more out of Minkah then any team will get out of those guys
None of those guys is a sure thing in the mood of Elway or Luck. Development will go a long way for each of them. The difference between the 1st and 2nd tier this year is nominal IMO
Piggy I agree from an intangibles standpoint Falk is as good if not better than any of the 1st round QBs. I have watched a lot of YouTube clips of him and while his arm is not elite it’s good enough
Maybe Lazard lasts to the 6th
We don;’t need any Lizards or horses! 😉
You know I just want our team to be an animal kingdom
So what is wrong with Hurst’s heart?
I don’t think it has fully been disclosed. I think it was an irregular and fast heartbeat. I am guessing it is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
I forgot what it’s called but it’s something he has had since high school and he was cleared by doctors – so I’m a little surprised it’s dropped him this far
High school years is about the time HCM develops
I read somewhere, that if they corrected his heart, his career would be over…
If it is HCM the correction involves cutting out the hypertrophic portion of the heart or burning it off in a procedure called an ablation
If he is there, roll the dice!
I’d take him. He’s worth the risk
It’s an interesting D we are building.
CBs and Safeties are big.
DEs and LBs are small.
Everybody is fast.
Big giant hole in the middle you could fit a Suh through
A hole that only a Mo could fill.
DTs are the exceptions to that…think they want the big old boys there to anchor while the DEs do the splashy stuff. Maybe Suh just didn’t fit with that.
i believe phillips and godchaux can secure the middle with vincent coming off the bench
I think there’s a decent shot we don’t draft a RB, and then we sign CJ Anderson. I hope we do draft a RB, much better value
i believe they are waiting until after june 1 to make that deal

_______________________________________________
i believe you are correct stanger, i think no matter the game plan suh had a tendency to free lance, not sure gase wants free lancers.
We haven’t talked about him much. He’s probably not as ready to play as Falk is but he would also be a good pick
I dont see a spot for TJ either, but the rooks need to get up to speed first and it gives us pretty good depth.
Mike, haven’t you seen the back 7 we’ve had on the field every year late in the season? What about our 2016 playoff game? Why is everyone in such a hurry to deplete our depth? The cap hit is pretty large to get rid of TJ this year, so be happy with the depth.
Next year he can come off the books with a $2.5M hit, 2020 the cap figure is pretty high, if he stays on the team.
We’ll see Steve – No matter how you slice it, the 4 YR contract for TJ seems pretty damn odd right about now
I said I don’t see a spot for him.
i would be surprised if we drafted a qb, with Fales and Osweiler already under contract we would have to stash him on the ps, i think it would be a wasted pick
Fales – are you kidding
Did you see Osweiller contract? It’s straight out of 54th man
both have guaranteed contracts of apprx 800k, on nfl standards its not that much but they would take a cap hit releasing them, seeing they just signed them i highly doubt releasing one of them at this point is in their plans.
so imo they have no where or need to draft a qb at this point in the draft.
I think they are more like safety valves even with those contracts
Besides – the q.position
I think they are more like safety valves even with those contracTa
Bumpiest cab ride ever
LOL
I don’t care who we drafted. It’s kind of silly to start trading away veteran players at this point. All of these rookies are still unproven, plus we need depth and competition to make everyone better and to account for any injuries.
I’m happy about Gesicki, but the reality of situations are that Tight Ends don’t typically make an incredible impact until year two, so expectations should be tempered.
The third round pick was the first time in this draft that made me tilt my head to the side like a dog. I completely see why we drafted him, but he seems like one of those picks from history that just doesn’t pan out. I felt we could have gone RB, DT, or QB in that round and got a better player.
I really hope we come out of this round with a quality player from two of those three positions I’ve mentioned, if not trading up for one solid pick. I really don’t want to go into the season with Osweiler as the backup. This QB should be there for competition and possible QB of the future few years, should Tanny get re-injured or we move on from his salary.
If we go with another TE like Smythe or get some interior o-line help, I’d completely understand those picks as well because there’s need there.
I’ve enjoyed the draft thus far though. I can’t remember the last time we actually drafted players that people on the board have scouted and loved, because those guys usually tend to get their names called regularly for other teams on game day. It really feels like we’ve been read this past offseason. Maybe the light has switched on.
This is your longest post ever
Cespedes!
Good point on the TEs taking a while to set in…..but at least we have one of those now to wait on.
these twin 4th rnders should make the 53
Hurst has the same issue as Star Lotulelei !
https://247sports.com/Bolt/Michigan-football-Maurice-Hurst-receives-update-on-heart-condition-prior-to-Pro-Day-116564733
That’s what I thought
Thanks!
er…I mean Cespedes.
Better
LMAO! Missed it by a minute
i think they’ll add another lber
There are good ones left
What else I see above, happy to deplete back 7 depth, but bitch about not having RB depth.
Jones, Minkah, McDonald, Lippett, Mccain, Tankersly, Howard
Then you have Anthony and Baker as coverage LBs
I don’t know – we can figure it out
I like the problem.
I tilted my head to the side too SB. He’ll be a ST player to start with but he’s the type and size of guy you see being worked in more and more these days.
He’s a guy that will push Anthony pretty hard so maybe we’ll see Anthony’s full potential come out.
I tilted my head to the side as he gazed into my eyes…WTF 😉
i think we definitely have to add at least 2 rbs, only 4 on the roster and we’ll need 4 on the 53
Has Rock been missing since the Gesicki pick?
LOL — maybe we should get BBM to figure out what happened to him after the pick.
did he get-sicki after the gesicki pick?
Picky about some one not named Gesicki!!!
Worrying about a couple $100k cap hit, but ok with $6M+ hit. It’s getting pretty funny this morning.
You’re missing the point,,,the thought was drafting a QB today…..It’s not about the cap hit but why would you sign a guy to 800k and draft another QB in the late rounds of the draft? especially when you have depletion’s at other positions?
Funny like a clown
And funny lookin
I’m in a cab and this cab driver won’t shut up
I just want to tell him – “dude, I’m speculating on guys my team will never draft. shut up!”
LOL
Sounds like me trying to get to sleep.
Well we’re officially tied to Tannehill now. All speculation is over. And with that being said Coach Gase wishes to send this dedication out to Ryan Tannehill

Just mentioned your name and here you are — do you know what happened to Rock after we didn’t take Goedert?
Fucking Pats can pick up a 7th RD QB or undrafted QB like Mike McGough and turn him into a HOFer

O-rob, I think we draft a RB late and bring 1 or 2 more UDFA RB’s.
I think we may sign CJ Anderson after we get some cap relief post June 1
#3 RB won’t go to a vet after signing Gore, Gase said.
A lot of mileage on Gore, Gase likes CJ
I always forget we have TE MarQueis Gray who is a decent blocking TE.
and a good FB
He’s also someone who needed to be involved in the passing game more, especially on 3rd and short. I think he had 1 catch for 10 yards all of last season. That’s criminal.
he made some critical 3rd & 4th and short runs picking up 1st downs

Makes sense on a number of fronts, but we could take a RB in the 4th and no more.
You can always grab UDFA running backs, but I’d feel more comfortable grabbing someone in the mid rounds. Gore/Drake for 16 games is still question mark city.
It’s still better than we’ve had in a while, we’ll surely have other RBs in camp.
There’s a good chance anyone drafted today, besides Hurst doesn’t play a significant role this year. An RB would be another exception, but we have other needs first that are harder to get.
Wyoming, Yeah, I like both of them NCState OL. Either one would be a good addition and depth. One has only allowed 1 sack in his college career and the other allowed none.
I like both myself!
Good call on them!
Would anyone be upset if we used our two 4th RD picks plus a 4th RD next year to get Hurst at pick #1?
Not sure we need to. Plus I want Shaquem!
I hear ya, we definitely don’t need to. You know MTP is just dying to make a move though
Mike E… your title “We Did It !!” … I heard the voice Reese Witherspoon at the end of Legally Blonde … I also realized I’m the only guy in my household when I immediately heard her voice. lol

That’s ok. I’d rather have those guys and not Pigsgerald U.
Who was the one handed pitcher who threw an
MLB no hitter. He was amazing.
Jim Abbott
Yeah thanks. Man he was fun to watch.
Crazy how he was able to get his glove on, and then take it off again to throw. Very impressive
I know standing 60′ away from major league hitters with no glove on. He was incredible.
And back in the 40’s there was a guy named Pete Gray with one arm……and he played outfield and before there was a DH.
I’d like Griffin too. This is why we need lots of draft picks every year. To grab everyone like we’re collecting infinity stones.
I would love Griffin too. Talking about changing the culture
Exactly. When you out-work him then you’re getting somewhere
I think Hurst’s medical condition is a major red flag because he should have been gone long before now
He was supposed to go between 1st and 3rd. He was cleared by NFL doctors, he didn’t need a recheck after the combine. He’s still a risk, but RD 4 is the time to start taking that risk
Teams are probably leery because of Nick Fairley
At some point that risk has to even out with with the can they play risk of anyone taken after the 3rd round.
Jimmy Johnson
two areas that seem to have been in turmoil for almost a decade (at least thats what it feels like):
OL and LB
If TJ becomes a tweener LB, and Minkah can play all over the field… we have depth for the first time and just maybe a LB corps built for these new rules. Someone always gets hurt, so depth is nice to have.
Wait what
And we still don’t really know what is up with Stephone Anthony, who we felt strongly enough about to give up a 5th for……he’s only 25. And did get picked in the first round.
Wyo,
on your guesses… John Kelly at RB ? Is THIS where Trump has decided to reassign him? 😉
I like Kelly a lot.
Somebody has to clean out Drakes cleats when the D is on the field!
There goes Ian Thomas
Akins went before him.
Cool!
Speaking of HOLES in the roster… what round will the first kicker be taken?
I think our draft has been really good so far, but we have to have a couple more good ones (like our previous two and hopefully this one) to have the depth we need.
If we take a kicker it will be with the 6th or 7th. They could bring in a couple as UDFAs too.
man, I didn’t know it was 11:00 CT already. 2 late 4th rounders… only thing really worth watching today because our other 3 picks are squarely in the “rarely makes the team” area.
Ajayi’s knees dropped one of the most productive RBs in college history to the 5th round.
Hurst could easily fit into a story line like this (only where he does NOT end up in Philly) LOL
I missed the news yesterday the Maxwell signed one yr deal with Seahawks.
Josey Jewell! LB depth and ST demon at worst. Come on man….I need a Hawkeye.
Anyone else freaking tired of CLE being on the clock? Enough already with their 30 picks!
Them and the patsies keep making trades too
Callaway loves the weed.
Sorry Randy
Bye bye Jewel
