We did it!!!

psu_orig

I watched HOF Miami Dolphins Center Dwight Stephenson stroll to the podium.  He looked happy.  I know why he was so happy, but I didn’t know then.  He then uttered the words with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State.  When he said Mike, my heart raced, and then he actually said GEH-Sick-ee,  I screamed a a scream of happiness, it’s possible Tim who is about 45 miles away may have heard it.  We did what we haven’t been able to do for over a decade since Randy McMichael, we selected a legitimate receiving TE.  I’m happy for Brian in NY, his son, and really, I’m happy for Ryan Tannehill and all Dolphins fans, because this is a gamechanger. It’s the secret sauce we’ve been missing for far too long.  Gesicki will open up that field for us, because he will be that nightmare that NFL teams struggle most to cover, including our own Dolphins defense.  Just his presence on the field will open things up for our RB’s, and our perimeter WR’s.  He will command attention, and that will give other players opportunities they haven’t had here.  I can’t wait!

usa_today_10374890.0

What about me boss?  In the 3rd RD, The Dolphins selected Ohio State LB Jerome Baker.  Baker who is 6’1 229 is a speed player.  He’s not a run stopping thumper, but he’s a chase and tackle guy who can also cover pretty well.  It will be interesting to see how Baker is used, and not to belabor the point, but where exactly does T.J. McDonald fit in?  Seems we keep adding pieces that lessen the need for T.J. with Minkah Fitzpatrick and now LB Jerome Baker.  The Dallas Cowboys want a safety , and we just happen to have one, and the Cowboys have pick #116 in the 4th RD, so maybe a deal can made.  We could get a DT, RB and maybe a QB, so keep your eye on MTP who has obviously been tied up and must be raring to go, if he’s been untied that is.

So far, we’ve done and excellent job in this draft, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the luxury of saying that.  Go DOLPHINS!!

                                                          JERSEY STRONG!!!

Great job Mike E, congrats to Dolphin nation draftee claus has been good to us this year.

Gesicki and Tannehill should be practicing high-pointing the ball in every inch of the end zone tomorrow. No time for parades.

Until we can get push up the middle consistently and ferociously, we will not rattle qbs or stop the run. We didn’t do that and haven’t done it with or without Suh for a long time.

FIRST of all, this is a very nice analysis, Mike. And I think virtually all of us believe T-Bomb & Pals have upgraded the Dolphins with their first two selections in this draft. But I’m NOT ON BOARD with our 3rd round selection when other, more pressing, needs are obvious. SUCH AS:
    1) WHO, among these choices, is going to stuff the run?? –Minus Suh, this Fins’ defense figures to be in trouble stopping the run in 2018.
    2) WHO, among these draft picks, is going to be our developmental QB? 3 picks after Baker, the Steelers took Mason Rudolph to groom for their possible QB of the future. I believe Mason COULD have a bigger NFL impact than Baker.
    3) WHO, among these draft selections, is going to replace the first Fins’ O-Lineman who goes down with an injury this season?? A total of SIX offensive linemen were taken later in round 3 after the Baker pick. TWO of my fav O-Linemen among this group were Orlando Brown, OT from Oklahoma, taken by the Ravens and Joseph Noteboom, OT from LSU, also taken after Baker. I’d have been happier with either of them in preference to Baker.
    4) ANOTHER RUN STUFFER, USF’s Deadrin Senat, went to Atlanta with the 90th pick. We passed on him in favor of Baker.
5)RUNNING Back, also, was completely ignored so far. IF Drake goes down, we are in DEEP SHIT right now!
    ———
YES, we still have today, the 3rd day of the draft. One shudders to think how many more Isaac Asiata’s the Fins can select today. AND, speaking of today, would THIS be the time to replace our outstanding FG kicker who ONLY missed one kick last season? –We’ll see.
    ——–
THERE’s still way too many gaping holes to fix today. We are not yet a playoff quality team, not by a long shot.

I think it was the right pick as far as position goes, Having only 6 LBers on the team and needing to have apprx 10 at training camp it’s apparent this was a need pick,

    Mike E very good article.
    Thinking outside the box.
They really could trade McDonald into the draft, but I doubt they can get a 4th for him now.
    Maybe a 5th.
Would that be good enough? I think they were very unhappy with McD’s play last year and said so and have proved it with their picks this year so far.

If we get a 5th for him we could stay put with that or try to pkg our 6th and 7th picks with the 5th to move into the 4th if anybody would be stupid enough to do that with us.

The halcyon days when the team was owned by Mr. Slate and coached by the Demigod Shula, Lord of Turf Toe who went into every draft with 23 picks and never missed on one and always picked the fans’ favorite draftees.

    Miami’s run defense with Suh:
    2017 – 18th
    2016 – 29th
    2015 – 27th

Maybe Suh, as an individual, wasn’t the key to run defense? Maybe a team is more important? Last year certain people bitched about linebacker play – team drafts to fix the linebackers and the same people bitch about getting rid of players that didn’t fix the problem, whose play and salary, coincidently, certain people bitched about. I guess everything looks better in the rear-view mirror.

AND I will NEVER apologize for the Dolphins successes “back in the day.” The Dolphins were the winningest pro sports franchise in the 1970’s AND I’m damn proud of what they accomplished, even if their successes fly in the face of certain agendas. And to those who call Ross “A GREAT OWNER,” I’d reply “you are what your record says you are.” Ross’s 65-81 won lost record and ZERO playoff wins ARE THE WORST IN DOLPHINS’ HISTORY. And let’s not forget, Miami began it’s downward spiral into mediocrity under the Robbie’s and Shula. Miami’s winning percentage by the decade:

      1970’s – .726
      1980’s – .622
      1990’s – .594

Lots of good 2nd tier QBs still there: Falk, Lauletta, White, Benkert, Ferguson. No need to panic. All of them I like better than Rudolph. Falk is probably my favorite of the group but still good talent available

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I got to say
Falk may not have the arm strength of the guys that went in the first round, but he is much better at some of the other traits a qb needs

Franlky none of those guys were worth salivating over
I would have taken one of he dropped to 11 but I’m pretty sure We will get a lot more out of Minkah then any team will get out of those guys

None of those guys is a sure thing in the mood of Elway or Luck. Development will go a long way for each of them. The difference between the 1st and 2nd tier this year is nominal IMO

  46. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I dont see a spot for TJ either, but the rooks need to get up to speed first and it gives us pretty good depth.

Mike, haven’t you seen the back 7 we’ve had on the field every year late in the season? What about our 2016 playoff game? Why is everyone in such a hurry to deplete our depth? The cap hit is pretty large to get rid of TJ this year, so be happy with the depth.

Next year he can come off the books with a $2.5M hit, 2020 the cap figure is pretty high, if he stays on the team.

  47. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i would be surprised if we drafted a qb, with Fales and Osweiler already under contract we would have to stash him on the ps, i think it would be a wasted pick

      Fales – are you kidding

Did you see Osweiller contract? It’s straight out of 54th man

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

both have guaranteed contracts of apprx 800k, on nfl standards its not that much but they would take a cap hit releasing them, seeing they just signed them i highly doubt releasing one of them at this point is in their plans.

I don’t care who we drafted. It’s kind of silly to start trading away veteran players at this point. All of these rookies are still unproven, plus we need depth and competition to make everyone better and to account for any injuries.
I’m happy about Gesicki, but the reality of situations are that Tight Ends don’t typically make an incredible impact until year two, so expectations should be tempered.
The third round pick was the first time in this draft that made me tilt my head to the side like a dog. I completely see why we drafted him, but he seems like one of those picks from history that just doesn’t pan out. I felt we could have gone RB, DT, or QB in that round and got a better player.
I really hope we come out of this round with a quality player from two of those three positions I’ve mentioned, if not trading up for one solid pick. I really don’t want to go into the season with Osweiler as the backup. This QB should be there for competition and possible QB of the future few years, should Tanny get re-injured or we move on from his salary.
If we go with another TE like Smythe or get some interior o-line help, I’d completely understand those picks as well because there’s need there.
I’ve enjoyed the draft thus far though. I can’t remember the last time we actually drafted players that people on the board have scouted and loved, because those guys usually tend to get their names called regularly for other teams on game day. It really feels like we’ve been read this past offseason. Maybe the light has switched on.

    Tony Adams N.C. STATE- G – Senior 5.69

Would be my late round pick for OL depth. Dude never allowed a sack in his college career.

  78. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Someone will sign CJ Anderson, there will probably be a line of teams making him offers after the draft

  79. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

You can always grab UDFA running backs, but I’d feel more comfortable grabbing someone in the mid rounds. Gore/Drake for 16 games is still question mark city.

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s a good chance anyone drafted today, besides Hurst doesn’t play a significant role this year. An RB would be another exception, but we have other needs first that are harder to get.

  81. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Wyoming, Yeah, I like both of them NCState OL. Either one would be a good addition and depth. One has only allowed 1 sack in his college career and the other allowed none.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Would anyone be upset if we used our two 4th RD picks plus a 4th RD next year to get Hurst at pick #1?

  83. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Mike E… your title “We Did It !!” … I heard the voice Reese Witherspoon at the end of Legally Blonde … I also realized I’m the only guy in my household when I immediately heard her voice. lol

  86. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’d like Griffin too. This is why we need lots of draft picks every year. To grab everyone like we’re collecting infinity stones.

  87. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think Hurst’s medical condition is a major red flag because he should have been gone long before now

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He was supposed to go between 1st and 3rd. He was cleared by NFL doctors, he didn’t need a recheck after the combine. He’s still a risk, but RD 4 is the time to start taking that risk

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

At some point that risk has to even out with with the can they play risk of anyone taken after the 3rd round.

      Jimmy Johnson

  88. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

two areas that seem to have been in turmoil for almost a decade (at least thats what it feels like):

    OL and LB
If TJ becomes a tweener LB, and Minkah can play all over the field… we have depth for the first time and just maybe a LB corps built for these new rules. Someone always gets hurt, so depth is nice to have.

  89. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Wyo,
on your guesses… John Kelly at RB ? Is THIS where Trump has decided to reassign him? 😉

  92. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Speaking of HOLES in the roster… what round will the first kicker be taken?
I think our draft has been really good so far, but we have to have a couple more good ones (like our previous two and hopefully this one) to have the depth we need.

  93. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

man, I didn’t know it was 11:00 CT already. 2 late 4th rounders… only thing really worth watching today because our other 3 picks are squarely in the “rarely makes the team” area.

  94. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Ajayi’s knees dropped one of the most productive RBs in college history to the 5th round.
Hurst could easily fit into a story line like this (only where he does NOT end up in Philly) LOL

  95. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I missed the news yesterday the Maxwell signed one yr deal with Seahawks.
