Miami Dolphins Offense 2018

While significant changes were made to the defense, the same could be said for the offense as well.  Gone is the sometime misfiring spark plug #14 WR Jarvis Landry.  Also gone via retirement is TE Anthony Fasano.  Oh, also gone, thankfully, is #6 Jay Cutler, who was kind enough to play for Adam Gase one more time to the tune of $10M.  In addition to Cutler evacuating the QB spot, long time Dolphins backup Matt Moore finally made his exit after 7 seasons.  Former pro bowl center  Mike Pouncey was released after 7 seasons and 3 pro bowls.  So those are the departees, let’s now take a look at all the players who have joined the Miami Dolphins offense.

Maybe the largest acquisition, both in size and importance was signing LG Josh Sitton in FA.  The 4 time pro bowler should really solidify the left side of the line, and his presence alone should make our young LT Laremy Tunsil a better player.  Tunsil will learn from Sitton, as well as benefit from better play aside him.  Sitton is an excellent pass blocker, and will open holes for the run game as well.  After the release of C Mike Pouncey, the Dolphins wasted no time in trading for SF 49ers starting C Daniel Kilgore.  Whether Kilgore is an upgrade over Pouncey remains to be seen, but we do know he will be practicing with his linemates from OTA’s all the way to the preseason, which is a good thing.  Kilgore may actually be a better run blocker than Pouncey, so that should help our run game.   We picked up the 5th YR option on RT Ja’Wuan James, so that just leaves the RG spot up for grabs between veteran Ted Larsen, up and comer Jesse Davis and last year’s 5th RD pick Isaac Asiata.

The Dolphins decided to fill the WR corps with a couple of veterans, one a long time veteran in WR Danny Amendola,  the other a younger and ascending player in WR Albert Wilson.  Amendola, a 9 year veteran who played his last 5 seasons with the Patriots is well known to Dolphins fans.  One of those irritating smaller, quicker WR’s who we can never seem to cover well,  Amendola is also a very clutch big game performer.  Amendola really shined in the playoff spotlight, so we can only hope he can help us if we should reach that high.  Albert Wilson is on the rise, albeit a low grade rise, but Wilson had his best season last year for the Chiefs.  Another smaller, speedy WR who like Amendola, will play more in the slot, his YPR are at 12.5, which is 2.5YPR higher than Jarvis Landry.  Wilson has 4.4 speed, so he will add some speed to the middle of the field, and give safeties and LBs fits.

At the RB position, we signed long time veteran RB Frank Gore, who spent his last 3 season with the Indianapolis Colts, after spending 10 years, no typo, with the 49ers.  Gore has a lot of wear on his treads, but those reconstructed knees just keep going, and his wish was to finish his career in Miami, where it all started for him at the U of M.  Gore joins last year’s standout RB Kenyan Drake, and in the draft in RD 4, we added even more firepower, drafting big back Kalen Ballage out of Arizona St.  This big back moves very well, running a 4.46 and has very reliable hands and catches the ball extremely well.  That basically gives us a stable of backs that can catch the ball out of the backfield, which is precisely what HC Adam Gase wants.

Saving the best for last, the Miami Dolphins finally addressed the TE position!  I’ll say it again, it felt so good, the Dolphins finally addressed the TE position, doubling down in the draft.  In RD 2, the Dolphins selected the most athletic TE in the draft, Penn State TE Mike Gesicki (JERSEY STRONG!).  In RD 4, the Dolphins selected Notre Dame standout Durham Smythe.  This gives the Dolphins just what they have missed for far too long.  Gesicki, a super fast athletic receiving TE who can sky for the ball, a vertical leap over 41″ to be that seam busting TE and a nightmare to cover in the red zone.  Durham Smythe is a fine receiving TE as well, but he’s also a dependable in line blocking TE, who will replace Anthony Fasano.  I can’t wait to see this duo out on the field, terrorizing opposing defenses like our defense always has been.

OK, maybe I didn’t really save the best for last, but I’m very pleased that #17, Ryan Tannehill will be back this season.  He’s worked very hard to get back in the game, rehabbing for nearly 2 years.  As HC Adam Gase stated, Tannehill has remained right on top of things,  learning every nuance of the offense, understanding better the offense, and he will get his hands back on the reins of this offense this season.  I know he has detractors, but I’m a fan, and I really hope he can begin this season playing at the level he left off at in 2016.  I think he was playing his best football, and the TD numbers were down due to the extremely slow start the team had in the first 5 games.  Tannehill was balling, and if he could pick up where he left off, I like our chances for the playoffs with this newly constructed roster.

There’s an awful lot to be optimistic about this season, despite what the Vegas oddsmakers say.    Robert Quinn, Cam Wake, Charles Harris and Andre Branch getting after the QB.  Finally, a trio of competent LB’s with Raekwon McMillan manning the middle, surrounded by Kiko Alonso and Stephone Anthony, and mix in Jerome Baker on passing downs.  A legit deep safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick, who can cover anywhere and everywhere on the field, which allows thumper and robber Reshad Jones to make plays closer to the LOS.  A big safety who can come up and cover on passing downs, T.J. McDonald, and tackle like a LB, even if they don’t call him one.  A defensive line rotation with 8 competent guys who will be rotating much more frequently to keep everyone fresher.  Some good young corners, Cornell Armstrong and Jalen Davis to enter the mix, with our own CB/WR returning from injury, Tony Lippett, along with starters Xavien Howard and Cordrea Tankersley.

Just imagine if Devante Parker ever decides to be the WR we all hoped like hell he would be for the Dolphins.  Add in Amendola, Wilson, Gesicki, Smythe and the trio of RB’s, and this offense could take off.  I really believe there is something to look forward to this season, something way beyond 4 wins.  It’s time for Tannehill to step up to that elusive next level, but I think we have the pieces in place to help him get there.  A better O-line, a much less predictable offense that won’t be reliant on one player, and so many different personnel formations to run with confidence, 2 TE’s, 3 WR’s, a RB in the slot, 4 WR’s, whatever, we can do it all.  Be optimistic, but cautiously optimistic.  I don’t want anyone to go off the deep end.  GO DOLPHINS!!!

D, I’m of course pulling for Jamiyus Pittman, the slaughtering of the name James notwithstanding, because he’s coming off of a very hungry team here at UCF and that DT competition will be fun. He’s a worker and he’s infected with what Shaquem has. And what a lot of the young guys on our team have.

This is really hard for me and hope you guys understand, and am feeling you will be open minded enough not to harsh on me and accept after. After a lot of struggle told my family and afterwards some close friends (which I consider you all too). All can hear Is Yanny, but deep down inside really know am a Laurel.

That’s tough to accept I would have figured you for laurel. This is a little disappointing.

LOL — I really want to be but guess am the starting shortstop for the Yanny team no matter how much want to play for Team Laurel…..where’s Bookman?

  4. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If I slide it all the way to the right, I hear Yanny pretty clearly and can’t even pretend I hear Laurel. The rest of the time I hear Laurel and no Yanny.

So it’s supposedly the same sound at different frequencies? Kinda interesting. I’ve been telling my wife recently that I feel I’ve started to lose hearing at certain frequencies. I’ve noticed when watching movies. I wonder if hearing loss has something to do with the way people are hearing it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t go off to the hearing aid store quite yet. The company that put it out for kids wanted it to be Laurel, but flip side of that is the high school kid that started the whole thing only heard Yanny.

Lol, I’m not quite there yet. It’s just something I’ve noticed recently. I thought maybe might be the definitive, reliable, alternative confirmation I’ve been looking for, but I would be happy for it not to be. 🙂

    13kv,

Every site I look at which outlines the proposed changes says the receiving team has to line 8 players up in the 15 yd set up zone (which starts at the kicking team 45). That is also what it says on the chart I posted. It doesn’t say anything about having to line up 15 yds back. I think they just show the defenders there because generally, except for onside kicks, that is around where players will likely line up.

This shows the set up zone clearly:

    ?tfw_site=NFL&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nfl.com%2Fnews%2Fstory%2F0ap3000000933125%2Farticle%2Fnfl-to-consider-several-proposed-kickoff-rule-changes

And the bottom left of this graphic outlines the proposed change as: “At least 8 players must be in the 15 yard ‘set up zone’ prior to the kick off…”

    ?tfw_site=wordpressdotcom&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ffinsmobunleashed.com%2F2018%2F05%2F16%2Fmiami-dolphins-offense-2018%2Fcomment-page-1%2F%23comments

There is nothing even remotely indicating teams will only get to use the last 10 yards of the 15 yard set up zone.

On the example where you can hear both, I hear Laurel on the left and middle and don’t start hearing yanni till it gets to 3/4s to the right, but I can certainly hear both , one at either end of the slider.

When I Google image him, there’s some other pictures that look the same way, but you’re correct, the video doesn’t show him like that. Not sure what to think, cautiously optimistic.

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So what was the word that was actually said in whatever it was this was taken from? Or is that the thing? Nobody knows?

  9. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    13kv,

What you are talking about (receiving team having to run up 5 yards on onside kicks) might happen quite a bit on surprise onside kicks. The receiving team will likely line up at the 50 on standard KOs because that is where they can start blocking.

So yeah, they may actually cause more nasty OSK collisions when the receiving team isn’t expecting it.

You think Pittman has a chance?
    ——————————————————
Tim, Pittman was one of the highest rated UDFA’s that we signed, i think McCray and Davis were slightly higher rated overall, but Pittman was like the second best DT UDFA.

    • D's avatar D says:

I guess what im saying in reply is that he probably has as much chance as any other UDFA we picked up and probably as much as any of the bubble players. He has a lot of work to do to get on the team, but we seem to find guys like that every year, and i think he could be one of this years guys.

Why don’t they just do a random drawing of a yard line to place the ball. Or have a fan in the crowd throw a dart at a board of yard line placements. Bullseye can be onside recovery.
Or break out the xbox and just play the game on that.

In short….they are never going to actually make anything safer. It all is just a show.

Good to see you back on the board. I offer my condolences for your loss. I also offer an apology.

Awhile back, right before you took leave, I cracked wise about your posts looking like you had been drinking and throwing up tots or something to that effect (knowing nothing about what you may have been going through at the time). So if my timing was bad and it came across, or was received as mean, I do apologize. It was just me being me with the jokes, no harm intended. If you didn’t even see it, or if it didn’t matter in the slightest, then I’m glad. 🙂 It has weighed on my mind a bit since I read about your loss.

We have several UDFA’s i think could make the team. McCray definitely has a shot he was a solid middle round prospect, though im not sure exactly why he feel that might change my mind o his chances. Id say Davis has a good shot of making the team, he has better size and IMO talent for the position than some of our depth guys, but we will have to see how much heart he plays with. If he is equal in effort to McTyer, and Lucas who both were on the roster last year, he has better talent then they do.

Sometimes the offense isnt the best to bring out statistics though, it might have not been the best scheme for him or maybe he wasnt a feature in the system, despite his talent level. A lot can go into what stats arent great or change from one year to the next.

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Tim,

I think the simple answer is internet, social media, and exposure. Not that these are making kids/people snap, but it is helping to create a bunch of self-absorbed assholes. Add instability issues and add to it the ability to give this part of our population a ‘shining’ moment or ‘fuck you world’ moment. It’s surprising more people don’t do this.

There are always going to be mentally ill, unstable, angry, disenchanted, or (insert issue here) people. In America these people are always going to have access to guns. Now they get infamy and get to feel like they did something and people will know who they are.

I think the real solution, which will never happen because we as a society suck ass, is when these events happen, we make sure the attacker is never made public or known, doesn’t get his name put out there, doesn’t get to have his say by way of manifesto or post or whatever, is kept literally and figuratively incognito.

This presents all sorts of logistical and practical issues, not to mention not everybody would get on board so this is another non-viable solution. It’ll never happen. I’ve said it many times, I honestly think this is the world we live in now, and there is no going back.

Get people to work together towards a solution? Shit, we can’t even get the majority of the population to put their stupid fucking phones down while they drive. Too many people too into themselves.

Unfortunately you’re right. You know what I think we will see at some point and this won’t be perfect either, but drones and even armed ones patrolling more areas of life. Maybe not necessarily to kill the perp, but tase them to incapacitate them until authorities on foot can get to them.

M13, there are lots of things that happen on a track as you know, if the source has some noise, that’s the raw similar to photography, only so much you can do to clean it up. Much of it gets hidden with other tracks. But mistakes are okay too sometimes, it’s part of the process. Nothing is perfect.

Go to 4:00 on this video/song and hear what long-time prominent engineer Eddie Kramer explained that he couldn’t fix. That reverse echo could not be eliminated from the preferred track. So they got creative and figured out how to use it in a cool way. 🙂

  32. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

The thing that sucked the WORST was when ya did a collab with a visitor from far away back in the day (before internet/digital/distance collab). For instance… back in the mid-90s when I was relatively new to studio engineering and mastering, I put a cat from Chi-Town on my record…

I was still on an analogue multi-tracker and messed up the EQ on his verse (well, it sounded GRAND at the time after drinking all day! LOL). The day after… OH $#!T(!!!)… and he had already returned home. I had to make due with what I got, being he wasn’t coming back for another year and my album was dropping in about 6 months.

Man… the CREATIVITY I used to ‘fix’ his verse became a staple of a new ‘sound’! And while this ‘sound’ didn’t last long, it was POPPIN'(!) for a time.

    Lessons learned…
    1) DON’T get hammered before a studio session!
    2) Failure is NOT fatal.
    3) Creativity is BORN from mistakes! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t say cut either. Just keep going, lay it down, worry about it in post. What you’re talking about is a magic that happens when you allow it to be. The mistakes were not always mistakes. It was organic movement and sound. The best stuff is born of this. 🙂

From the 1st round WRs of the 2015 class who will have the best year?
Amari Cooper(#4 overall pick), Kevin White(#7), DeVante Parker(#14), Nelson Agholor(#20), Breshad Perriman(#26) or Phillip Dorsett(#29)? Last year rankings were Agholor>Parker>Cooper>Dorsett>Perriman>White

We think we’ve had problems with Parker’s production and injuries, look at the careers of White, Perriman, and even Dorsett.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Chicago thinks Kevin White is going to have his breakout season this year, he’s finally healthy, and they think this is it. I wish we could say the same for Parker, who always has everyone thinking this is the year he breaks out until it doesn’t because his foot hurts, hamstring, or whatever shuts that down and has everyone shaking their head that “it” happened again.

Add in the fact that teams seem to be always help them with trade compensation. Amazing to me that they got a 1st RD pick for Brandin Cooks. It’s like no one gives up 1st RD picks anymore unless it’s a QB, but there go the Patriots, who picked him up for a 1st RD pick last season getting it right back. FINDOG $ I have a $50 bet even money; he’s betting the Fins WIN a playoff game this season; I’m betting they DON’T. Hope everyone’s got this.
    ——-
MANITOBA–YOUR ANALYSIS of the Vegas/Jets series was spot on. Vegas simply had the better team. IN FACT, Vegas should be favored over either Tampa Bay or Washington in the Stanley Cup Finals. They have been the BEST TEAM SO FAR in the playoffs. But things can change. In 2015 the Lightning had a 2-1 lead in The Finals and seemed destined to win the Cup. Then starting goalie Ben Bishop went down with a serious injury—-and Chicago went on to win the series against teenaged Andrei Vasilevskiy who, we all thought, would see NO ACTION in that series.—“VASY,” now an EXPERIENCED STAR IN THE NHL (and one of the 3 finalists for the Vezina Trophy) wants revenge in the Finals. But, first, the Bolts need to put-away a tough and gallant Washington Capitals team led by the best player in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin. It won’t be easy.

GAME 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals is tomorrow night in Washington. The VISITING TEAM has won 4 of the 5 games played so far in this series. And Tampa Bay is the visiting team.

Cooks is a 1st rd talent. He was drafted in the 1st by NO in 2014, has been productive but teams keep moving him for 1st rd picks etc. Why?

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I agree with Chris Perkins here

here are three positions the Miami Dolphins must get quality production from to have a sucssful season this year, and interestingly they’re the positions the franchise has its longest Pro Bowl droughts — quarterback, linebacker and tight end.
Miami hasn’t had a Pro Bowl quarterback since 1995 when Hall of Famer Dan Marino earned his final berth.

Miami hasn’t had a Pro Bowl tight end since 1993 when Keith Jackson earned a berth.

And Miami hasn’t had a Pro Bowl linebacker since 2010 when defensive end Cameron Wake earned a berth as an outside linebacker/rush end. Prior to that it was 2008 when Joey Porter earned a Pro Bowl berth.

The Dolphins have produced a Pro Bowl player at every position — including long snapper, punter, kicker and guard — since they’ve last had a Pro Bowl quarterback, tight end or linebacker.
