Camp Battles – RB

The Dolphins running back picture is pretty clear as far as the 3 that will definitely make the roster, but not so clear as far as which back will start, and which back will get the lion’s share of carries.  Future HOFer Frank Gore has come back home to Miami, and if healthy can still carry the rock to join one of the best RB’s in the NFL the last 4 games of last season Kenyan Drake, as well as rookie draftee Kalen Ballage.  Those 3 are in, but one of the other remaining 3, Senorise Perry, Brandon Radcliffe and Buddy Howell.  Those 3 will be competing for the final RB roster spot, and at least one of the others should get placed on the PS.  So let’s take a look at the competition.

Frank Gore RB – 5’9″ 212

A no doubt future Hall of fame RB, Gore has amassed over 14,000 yards rushing in the NFL as well as 77  rushing TD’s.  I don’t expect him to crack 15,000 this season, but he can easily get halfway to 1000 in a RB committee approach I expect us to have here in MIA in ’18.  Not only can Gore run, but he’s been an effective receiver his entire career as well.  Gore has 443 receptions for 3672 yards and 17 receiving TD’s.  Gore has done it all, and for a guy who had 2 knee injuries in college, he has been a picture of longevity with over 3000 NFL carries.  He may start early on, and might even get the majority of carries too, but Gase won’t let anyone get burnt out, so don’t expect Gore to have enough carries to break 1000 this season.  Gore is a bowling ball, and has always been a reliable short yardage converter, and I would expect him to get his chances in that regard.

________________________________________________

Kenyan Drake RB – 6’1″ 211

Drake really burst on the scene after the trade of Jay Ajayi.  Although Drake shared time with Damien Williams at first, it became clear that Drake was the better talent and he earned more carries and opportunities.  Considering the fact that Drake was always a 2nd fiddle at Alabama, behind either T.J. Yeldon, or Derrick Henry, it’s understandable why he wasn’t the first choice over Ajayi or even Damien Williams.  The talent was always there, but various minor injuries kept him from being the primary ballcarrier.  Once he got his chance here in Miami, Drake made the most of it.  With just 6 starts, Drake finished up the season with 644 yards rushing on 133 carries for a nice 4.8YPC and 3 TD’s.  In addition, Drake caught 32 passes for 239 yards and 1 TD.  Drake showed running power as well as home run speed. Both Gore and Drake will get the majority of the carries, but don’t sleep on number 3!

________________________________________________

Kalen Ballage RB – 6’2″ 228

The Dolphins nabbed this big back in the 4th RD of this years draft and I for one was really happy.  I read about all the backs, and there were things I liked a lot about a few of them, but those guys were going to be taken in the first couple of rounds, which i knew was unrealistic for us.  I think we took a back at the right time with our priorities, and Ballage was one of my favorite mid RD picks.  Oft compared to David Johnson, he has the size and physique of Johnson, as well as the speed and the receiving ability.  Ballage blasted a 4.46 at the combine, so this big guy can move.  He has a lot of work to do to get to being compared with David Johnson statistically in the NFL, but I think he has potential.  The fact that he’s a very smooth receiver out of the backfield will endear him to Gase who truly values that.  Ballage will definitely find opportunities here in Miami.

_______________________________________________

Senorise Perry RB – 6’0″ 210

Perry has been in the NFL since 2014 and has total of 8 carries in 4 years.  What Perry does well is play special teams, so already he has a leg up on making the roster.  Perry is also a kick returner adding to his special teams value.  He played in all 16 games last season in a special teams capacity.  Beyond that, he’s not much of a factor.

_______________________________________________

Brandon Radcliff RB – 5’9″ 216

Like Senorise Perry, Radcliff played at Louisville.  The UDFA joins Miami and a crowded backfield.  He was a 3 year starter at Louisville but was a non combine invitee.  He did well at his pro day unofficially running between a 4.4-4.5 at 207 lbs, roughly 8-9 lbs lighter than his playing weight at 215-216.  Radcliff will have to show some special teams ability if he’s going to steal that last spot, and if he can make the most of his carries in training camp and preseason, he has a shot st steal the last spot.

_______________________________________________

Buddy Howell RB – 6’1″ 215

Greg (Buddy) Howell is another non combine invitee.  Mr. Howell ran a 4.55 40 at his pro day, apparently he saw Lovey at the finish line.  Usually players shed weight for their pro day’s, but Howell was up a few pounds, up to 219.  Howell had a decent workload at FAU, rushing for 828 yards and 13 TD’s his junior year.  His numbers fell off a bit his senior year, but not bad.  Like Perry and Radcliff, Howell will have to show he can play ST’s and do it well to sneak onto the roster.

    13kv,

I’m not sure, but my guess about the page turn is that it comes after a certain amount of content. So it could turn after 250 posts if all the posts are one paragraph, or it could be 125 posts if they are all two paragraphs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Please break that down in a more detailed statistical manner please? 😉

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Should we only count posts of 50 words or less? That way D’s posts or game stat posts don’t throw off the numbers.

Also lol posts leave us in a poor position due to frequency and brevity, so the standard should be 3+ word posts. Yah?

I’ll do an random selection of 18 comment sections over the last year to get an accurate assessment. It’ll take me about two days to come back with the numbers. (Stanger, my data will be reflected in 2 massive posts, sorry…..)

  62. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

what does smoking cigarettes do for someone?

Nicotine crosses the blood barrier in your brain instantly. It releases endorphins into your system to create the sensation of pleasure the same way food or sex does. The endorphins are released immediately after you take a drag so a smoker is able to get “instant gratification” whenever they like.

  63. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Cigarettes are also a depressant. That’s the problem with them. They have about, I think, 4000 different chemicals and about 400 toxins. You can get a buzz off them but it’s minimal and you can get the same affect by going for a walk.
    ***
I smoke an occasional cigar when I golf….chewed for a couple years. Not worth the negative effects. But, it’s extremely psychologically addictive, so people struggle to quit. My daughter just started “hitting”, as she calls it, one of those nicotine sticks. I’m not very happy, and she does it because she thinks it’s cool. Jesus, some things never change!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  64. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Back to RB issues, as the stats showed regardless of what Ajayi did, and for the record i don’t like or care about Ajayi i simply use him as a standard candle.

Drake is not an every down btwn the tackles RB, leaving us with 8.1 yards to go on 2nd down on an avg is not good, neither was Ajayis 7.7 in 2017, we need that number to be below 7 to win.

I do believe Gore can do that and has done that in the past. he may have done it last year with a shitty Colts team.

this is my hope for this team, if anyone thinks Gase is going to have a magical passing offense, Tannehill is going to throw for 5000 yards, you better slow down on your expectations.

It could happen but for that to happen the foundation has to be set with a power running game. and Drake isn’t that guy.

when you build a home you start at the foundation not the roof.

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Let’s see what did I miss last night. Randy smokes an occasional cigar, Rock quit smoking, because he was getting too high, and he has an in/out rotating fantasy, Orob (auto-corrected to Prob, there I fixed it) wants to talk about RBs (go figure). 😁

“But as core players like Ajayi, Jarvis Landry and Ndamukong Suh have been moved”…that’s all the national writers seem to care about. But heck they have to write something about each team. We might not be as football smart as them, but we least know more about the Phins. And that comes from a guy who thought at times when we were the darling with a bullet that it was not deserved…..and that seems to happen when when we make splashes in FA, like Suh or Wallace. Full circle back to first point.

I have high hopes for Gase and co, I like the moves they have made.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think this year is a not a rebuild, but a re-set one. Do like that they are doing that though. I know a lot of guys go that wins and losses are who your team is, but hate teams that max out just for that like when a coach is trying to save his job for the next year instead of building a team that will actually have a chance at the ring down the road.

I think the team has done a fantastic job of convincing their fan base that we got rid of guys who weren’t really “good” players because of stuff other than their talent on the field. Good for them, but I’m not buying it. I don’t really have a problem with any of their moves. I do have a problem with not finding ways to keep and coach your best talent….and then getting very scant compensation….regardless of why it happened. It’s on them. They made the moves to get or retain the players, so they get the heat.
    ***
Suh and Landry are gone for financial reasons….that’s fine…but they were our two best players….and we got little out of those assets. I never have a problem letting a RB go because unless they’re really good they are replaceable. But, Ajayi was coming off a great year, and we got little. That sucks on a couple levels. Don’t try to make me feel better about it by castigating the players. Here’s an idea….figure out a way to coach them. Other coaches have.
    ****
I have no doubt there was stuff on both sides of the argument but welcome to coaching in the 21 century! It sucks, but it’s their reality. Players run the show because they expect to be treated like pansy ass prima donnas….and are! Lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one believes Suh nd Landry weren’t good players, what we believe is you can’t pay Suh the kind of money we were and some of the things he did was detrimental to the team. Same with Landry, you can’t pay him $15M.

I also believe the change of philosophy of using a rotation on the DL will benefit us and make losing Suh inconsequential. How many times did our D look good, then give up a first down and wilt, because they were tired after being on the field too long.

Landry’s use last year really pissed me off, with all the short stuff, so a change in personell I hope helps the O move the ball more consistently.

It’s that definition of insanity that we’re changing (doing same thing expecting different result) that’s one reason for my hype, another is I like the depth and direction.

    ____________________________________________________

I remember Miami bringing in a lot of talent in the early 90s, in the preseason we were slated to go to the superbowl, and i’m not sure but i don’t think we made the playoffs.

so maxing out and bringing in high priced FA’s may not work to well,

I believe the NFL talent level is more or less equal, I don’t think over the past 10 years the Pats had way better Talent than we did,

it’s all between the ears, their coaches and schemes are smarter than ours, that’s the difference in winning and losing.

We cut Suh, so nothing there, and we got a 4th RD pick for Landry, which turned into Kalen Ballage. Ajayi turned into Durham Smythe, so we’ll see what we get out of those 2.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Actually it was vice-versa with the 2 draft picks, but still, those are the 2 players we netted.

  79. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t think losing Landry and Suh was a big deal, they were both problem children. Landry was way to slow to warrant the kind of $$ he got, Suh was always free lancing, he may be great but to a degree un-coachable.

as for losing Ajayi, that hurt the 2017 Dolphins, we got a 4th for him that turned into Ballage, not sure what he brings to the table but getting Gore may have rectified the Ajayi loss if he has something left in the tank.

i think they are wanting guys to buy into their scheme and do like they are told, not sure Suh filled that category. we got a lot faster with our WR’s.

looking at all the moves i cant see how we are slated to win only 6 games?

The SB Champs ain’t one of’em,

as the underdog of every game with their backup QB!!!

    1 K. Hunt, RB KC 1327
    2 T. Gurley II, RB LAR 1305
    3 L. Bell, RB PIT 1291
    4 L. McCoy, RB BUF 1138

    9 C. Anderson, RB DEN 1007
    10 E. Elliott, RB DAL 983
    11 A. Collins, RB BAL 973
    12 F. Gore, RB IND 961

Guess’Ya can envision the Ravens Collins plus 28 yards as (a 8th) of 12
Ya see Gore there at 961 (for the Colts/minus Luck)

I’d imagine that if Drake could get the 600 plus in less than half a season as starter,
that he’d easily near if not top the 1000 yard mark with a full season starting..

Colts didn’t have much of an OL, and I believe that we now do (finally),
So Gore is also more than likely capable of being Frank Gore (even at 35/whatever)..

I think that whoever gets the most carries (starter or not) will easily eclipse 1000,
And the other will get at least what KD had in o17, (possibly even 750 or so)…

Especially if (unlike Indy or SB Champs),
Miami’s starting QB tosses the ball around for 16PLUS games!!!

    o17 playoff teams
    Pats
    Bills

    Eagles

Conference championship contenders included just ONE 1000 yard rusher..
Jags/Fournette who had the Pats whipped
until becoming conservative/running the ball & clock for the loss!!!

    Rob,
The Pats had a significant talent bonus at the most important spot on the field in Brady. That makes a huge difference in today’s NFL. Plus, they also had HOF talent at TE. They had Wilfork, Bruschi, Matt Light, Mankins, Troy Brown, Ty Law, Randy Moss…..they’ve had some pretty good players. The only HOF talent we’ve had is Suh. Maybe Wake….we’ll see.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

IMO The mirage of GOAT talent comes from winning, how well did Moss do in Oakland? they are all just players who played for a coach and a system that was smart, that’s why they get a lot for their players and their players turn out to be mediocre at best on other teams for instance Matt Cassell

  82. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

All talent in the NFL is similar, sure there are some 1st round busts, and some late round greats but when you put 53 guys on a team as per the NFL draft & FAcy rules.

Yea that first down average must be “”misleading””
Cuz he must have quadrupled-plus that on 2ND/3rd downs…

Of course that ain’t gonna happen!!!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

When you have 2nd and long it makes you predictable, D’s know you have to pass and they play deeper making it tougher for you to pass. the odds are against you in that down and long distance, when the odds catch up to you ; you fall behind and have no choice but to pass, a recipe for losing.

look at the number of runs Miami had over the last two years, you will find that 16 games we ran the ball more than 20 times and won all 16… 16 games we didn’t ….we lost all 16.

I believe Miami is aware of this and that may be the reason they brought Gore in the fold, at least that’s my hope.

you have to pick up the tough yards early to keep Ds honest…otherwise they will pin their ears back and come after you.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Rob, clean up the OL and you don’t get put in those 2nd and longs too often, or you do what the Cheats do and pick up 1st downs after being put in 1st or 2nd and long, because no matter what you’re always going to have to deal with them.

No not the same. The NFL stepped in and the Pats ended up giving up an additional 7th rd pick. That was in 2007, Welker wasn’t going to be the productive player with us that he was with the Pats anyway, we went 1-15 and the Pats lost the SB to the Giants.

QUITE true, Tim! That would be Chris Grier… who IMO, doesn’t get enough credit for what he’s done to draft some very stellar talent to our Phins, ever since Dennis Hickey was replaced.

Nevertheless… it’s Tannenbaum who will take any and all credit from Grier, being HE’S the ‘Big Cheese’ (as opposed to the ‘BIG TUNA’). Yeah, it’s a two-way street with Tannenbaum, as he’s the one who calls the FA shots (not Grier).

  99. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

From what I’ve heard and read, Grier oversees the scouting dept. and they put all the grades on the prospects setting up the board. I’m sure T-Baum gets involved in the why. I know then Gase spends a few weeks watching film on the prospects, probably most of the higher round guys, I doubt he watches 7 rounds worth. Then on draft day they discuss who to take when they’re up.

=26 starters, (couldn’t conclusively decide upon Draftee KD or FA FG)
      Hence one too many starters..

Off the top of my head..
Well, with recollection of my last piece still implanted in memory banks..

I’d suggest that this brass trio is doing EXCELLENT,
And that soon enough (1-2 yrs) they will have gathered
exactly what they want, everywhere they want
      Top to bottom 1 – 53 (if not 65)!!!

If we’re STUPID ENOUGH to Fire’Em before year 5-6 (@minimum)??

The process begins all over again from scratch
till the 5-6 years later (@ minimum) that it takes
to accumulate everyone you want, everywhere you want!!!

      Personally, F – – – the 5 – 6 year minimum,
No matter what, I’m staying with Gase & Company
Until & Beyond them getting it right/SB Trophy,
Or until death do I part !!!

PRODUCTIVE, PROGRESSIVE, COHESIVE, CONTINUITY BREEDS JUST THAT, TOP TO BOTTOM!!!

      GOFINS!!!
