Camp Battles – RB

The Dolphins running back picture is pretty clear as far as the 3 that will definitely make the roster, but not so clear as far as which back will start, and which back will get the lion’s share of carries.  Future HOFer Frank Gore has come back home to Miami, and if healthy can still carry the rock to join one of the best RB’s in the NFL the last 4 games of last season Kenyan Drake, as well as rookie draftee Kalen Ballage.  Those 3 are in, but one of the other remaining 3, Senorise Perry, Brandon Radcliffe and Buddy Howell.  Those 3 will be competing for the final RB roster spot, and at least one of the others should get placed on the PS.  So let’s take a look at the competition.

Frank Gore RB – 5’9″ 212

A no doubt future Hall of fame RB, Gore has amassed over 14,000 yards rushing in the NFL as well as 77  rushing TD’s.  I don’t expect him to crack 15,000 this season, but he can easily get halfway to 1000 in a RB committee approach I expect us to have here in MIA in ’18.  Not only can Gore run, but he’s been an effective receiver his entire career as well.  Gore has 443 receptions for 3672 yards and 17 receiving TD’s.  Gore has done it all, and for a guy who had 2 knee injuries in college, he has been a picture of longevity with over 3000 NFL carries.  He may start early on, and might even get the majority of carries too, but Gase won’t let anyone get burnt out, so don’t expect Gore to have enough carries to break 1000 this season.  Gore is a bowling ball, and has always been a reliable short yardage converter, and I would expect him to get his chances in that regard.

________________________________________________

Kenyan Drake RB – 6’1″ 211

Drake really burst on the scene after the trade of Jay Ajayi.  Although Drake shared time with Damien Williams at first, it became clear that Drake was the better talent and he earned more carries and opportunities.  Considering the fact that Drake was always a 2nd fiddle at Alabama, behind either T.J. Yeldon, or Derrick Henry, it’s understandable why he wasn’t the first choice over Ajayi or even Damien Williams.  The talent was always there, but various minor injuries kept him from being the primary ballcarrier.  Once he got his chance here in Miami, Drake made the most of it.  With just 6 starts, Drake finished up the season with 644 yards rushing on 133 carries for a nice 4.8YPC and 3 TD’s.  In addition, Drake caught 32 passes for 239 yards and 1 TD.  Drake showed running power as well as home run speed. Both Gore and Drake will get the majority of the carries, but don’t sleep on number 3!

________________________________________________

Kalen Ballage RB – 6’2″ 228

The Dolphins nabbed this big back in the 4th RD of this years draft and I for one was really happy.  I read about all the backs, and there were things I liked a lot about a few of them, but those guys were going to be taken in the first couple of rounds, which i knew was unrealistic for us.  I think we took a back at the right time with our priorities, and Ballage was one of my favorite mid RD picks.  Oft compared to David Johnson, he has the size and physique of Johnson, as well as the speed and the receiving ability.  Ballage blasted a 4.46 at the combine, so this big guy can move.  He has a lot of work to do to get to being compared with David Johnson statistically in the NFL, but I think he has potential.  The fact that he’s a very smooth receiver out of the backfield will endear him to Gase who truly values that.  Ballage will definitely find opportunities here in Miami.

_______________________________________________

Senorise Perry RB – 6’0″ 210

Perry has been in the NFL since 2014 and has total of 8 carries in 4 years.  What Perry does well is play special teams, so already he has a leg up on making the roster.  Perry is also a kick returner adding to his special teams value.  He played in all 16 games last season in a special teams capacity.  Beyond that, he’s not much of a factor.

_______________________________________________

Brandon Radcliff RB – 5’9″ 216

Like Senorise Perry, Radcliff played at Louisville.  The UDFA joins Miami and a crowded backfield.  He was a 3 year starter at Louisville but was a non combine invitee.  He did well at his pro day unofficially running between a 4.4-4.5 at 207 lbs, roughly 8-9 lbs lighter than his playing weight at 215-216.  Radcliff will have to show some special teams ability if he’s going to steal that last spot, and if he can make the most of his carries in training camp and preseason, he has a shot st steal the last spot.

_______________________________________________

Buddy Howell RB – 6’1″ 215

Greg (Buddy) Howell is another non combine invitee.  Mr. Howell ran a 4.55 40 at his pro day, apparently he saw Lovey at the finish line.  Usually players shed weight for their pro day’s, but Howell was up a few pounds, up to 219.  Howell had a decent workload at FAU, rushing for 828 yards and 13 TD’s his junior year.  His numbers fell off a bit his senior year, but not bad.  Like Perry and Radcliff, Howell will have to show he can play ST’s and do it well to sneak onto the roster.

M13, just like with every team, if over a 3-4 year span if you’re not winning then you didn’t build and or coach the team well. One winning season the first year is over. Last year was a bad season. They have to play well this season or the hour glass gets flipped.

That said, I’d be shocked if were bad. Could we fall short of the playoffs at 8-8 or 9-7, sure, but if the team showed a lot of progress and was competitive they’ll get another season to build on that. But another clunker season, I don’t know. Ross didn’t sign up for that. He mentioned Super Bowls when he hired Gase.

After you took out the first downs he ran for on first down!!!!!!
Come in man talk about made up stats
    _________________________________________________________

He’s a sub 4.5 scat back, he’s suppose to make those plays, i’m not arguing that he’s not a good 3rd down back catching balls out of the backfield, I’m arguing that he can’t run the ball btwn the tackles on 1st down.

when teams start the game they run the ball like 80% of the time on 1st down, they may get away from that later in the game because they’re behind, It’s not about him breaking a 50 yard run, he has that ability, he had 8 big runs last year and 59 less than 10 yard runs

    59 to 8…!!!

we already knew his total YPC

the reason i took the big runs away was to see how efficient he was and where he was leaving us on 2nd down, he ran 59 plays to that effect. sure he made some nice runs in those 59 plays but the end result is not conducive for power running stats.

there’s no rule that says you cant adjust the criteria of stats, the way i did those stats paints the true picture that he’s not a bell cow.

I knew just by watching him he had no business running up the middle, you keep denying this so i broke it down for you to show you the truth and you’re still in denial.

That FO knows where Drake should play.
he’s a good rb, he just doesn’t have the power to move the ball in short yardage,
why the do you think they signed Gore? why was Damein Williams starting over Drake last year?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’ll probably end up with the most rushes and catches though.

You’re still kind of ignoring the OL play in the run game. They were really inconsistent as we once again had to shuffle it quite a bit. Hopefully we can see a top 5 for awhile. That could make a huge difference.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

if you have a RB that runs 15 times in a game he has nine 1 yard gains five 2 yard gains and a 81 yard run,….100 yards …WOW!

he’s averaged almost 7 YPC, does that stat tell you he’s a good btwn the tackles RB?

he’s avg 7 yards a carry hell yeah i’ll take that on 1st down everytime.

but that stat does not tell the real story does it?

so if you were to eliminate the big run that paints a better picture of what we’re trying to determine.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, we’re also going to pass on every different down, it’s not like we’re going to run on 1st most of the time. The idea is to be balanced and put yourself in 3rd and manageable most of the time, and wait for the big plays. Of course minus runs, sacks, incomplete’s and penalties hurt you, that’s how you end up 3rd and 15 all the time. That has to stop.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

penalties are a killer, and you know who had a lot of them? MR Pouncey! when OL struggle they tend to hold

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

after looking at all the play by play stats they did run the ball early on 1st down quite often Tim

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t mind that, but we will pass on 1st too. It’s all about setting up manageable 3rd downs waiting for big plays in between and we have the skill to do that. The coaches have to do a better job with discipline, players too. Cutting down on penalties keeps you in the games. Turning 1st downs into 3rd and long kills you.

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Rock, we did the same for Ajayi, we didn’t give him any big runs and his short yardage stats were better than Drakes

  6. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tim, wasn’t Ajayi and Drake running behind the same OL last year?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes and both had ups and downs. We were bad on offense for most of the season, only a few okay to good games. Lots of reasons for that though.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

13kv, the team has to be competitive where each week you have a chance to win, if we’re 4-8 heading into the 4th quarter of the season, that’s not a good sign. If it’s because we lost a lot of key guys to injury, that’s also not a good sign. I wouldn’t fire anyone regardless of the results this season. But if it was a bad season followed by another non-winning season, something ain’t right.

I don’t expect that though. I do see a team that can be a playoff team, but it’s all gotta come together. We need some good fortune too this year. We’ve paid our blues dues. LOL

    1St & 10 isn’t a short yardage situation

He won’t likely be the 4th & short yardage back (for the most part)

Gore will most likely be that guy (for the most part)
As well as for several individual starts,
And for several two back starts

Damian Williams started over Drake cuz of experience & blocking ability,
As well as not yet knowing what Drake was capable of

Just like whoever started over the Brit for however long before learning of his running and only running abilities..

(For 3 extraordinary games totaling somewhere between 6 – 700 yards)
With 4 to 500 total yards for the other 13 games..
Absolutely loved those 3 ganes and on 4th & short,
Otherwise, nothing special with a ME bad attitude!!!

Did basically Nadda year one & three!!!

However it plays out?? Its fine with me!!!

Safety Jarvis Williams was gone at 45 after an acute asthma attack.

What we need is a big, fullback type of RB that can get us 3 yards on 1st, he can be average out in the flat catching, the D might bring an 8th man in the box, if he starts averaging 4 yards on 1st down. It’s ok, if our O becomes one demensionable with him in the game, because on 2nd down we’ll always be 2nd and 6 or 7.

If a tour golfer hits his ball into the gallery it should be like in baseball where you keep the ball.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Balls are personally marked and confirmed by their playing partner, you have to finish the hole with the same ball you started with otherwise it could be deemed lost ball which is stroke and distance or worse if you put another ball in play from a lost ball and hit it you could be DQ’d.
Normally if a pro hits someone in the gallery they give them a signed glove,

I was once hit by a pro…Franklin Langham hit my leg with a ball on the final day at the 17th hole at Doral, he had a big lead on Furyk with 9 holes to play and lost to him.

the ball hitting me was on sportscenter although i didn’t receive a signed glove. I think it was the Doral open 2000

When it came out that Sterratore’s family was season ticket holders with Pittsburgh, the shit hit the FAN! But Casper Milquetoast Ross refused to kick up a big stink, contrary to what Shula and Robbie would have done had THEY been victimized!!! That stated, I’m sure Steve Ross wasn’t trying to step on too many toes as a newbie hobby owner… thus, he didn’t raise a ruckus as his more established predecessors would have… but that doesn’t make it RIGHT.

I’m beginning to see just how CORRUPT sports have become. In the 90s, we saw MLB and the NHL become simps to gambling. And not long after, we all learned that professional boxing was rigged… due to gambling. Not too far after, we all learned that the NBA was rigged… due to gambling.

Is the NFL truly pure, like most think? I think NOT. And now that sports betting is being legalized — state-by-state — it’s only going to go further downhill.

I dont think the corruption in the league or the possible rigging of games has anything to do with one team paying for victories. I think the NFL already has a Cinderella team that will make viewer tune in, or perhaps they wait to find one that palys to their narrative as the season progresses, im not sure if its pre-planned prior to the playoffs or from day one.

What i do know if there seems to be very improbably story lines that emerge as a season goes on every season that make for good drama and those story lines seem to go further into the season and playoffs than reasonable. The 9’ers late season heroics that set up the narrative for this year, the Minnesota Miracle for a Cinderella team running on their 3rd QB who takes them to the playoffs. Philly with their Foles step in and guide them the rest of the way after they lose their pro-bowl bound QB. Pats come from behind wins in previous Superbowls where the team with the lead or able to capture the lead makes some of the dumbest moves ever recorded in the history of football.

Wasn’t our guy the QB at the helm when Miami won 7 of the last 8 that he played??

Now I don’t believe our guy belongs in the top 10,
But I don’t believe that Carr or Garroppolo do either,
And I think that wherever they should be is in the same ball park as THill!!!

Stafford I’ll give the nod to due to longevity, but I don’t see him very far in front of THill either!!! He had Calvin Johnson all them years to boost his numbers!!!

Parker or Gesicki start winning balls consistently,
And THill could easily be a Stafford, and better than Carr/Garroppolo,
(If he isn’t already), while I know that he’s at least equal to athletically!!

The difference is when those guys had it rolling their offense was high powered, when RT did it, our O wasn’t. That’s why I say don’t let the door…Landry. As I feel he held the O back at times, not so much his doing, just made it too easy on our QB to dump it off amidst the heavy rush.

I think that in the short area,
Amendola, Wilson, or Grant will be far more open than 14 ever was which will make it even easier for our QB to dump it under heavy pressure!!!

But those guys will have so much more separation that they won’t be tackled upon the moment of reception, and/or have to bull their way for the few or bunch of extra yards that they’ll cover before coming in contact with a defender!!!

I heard a cool story about Tim Bowens on the radio this morning and thought I’d share it because some of us were talking about him a few weeks ago.
    ***
Sage Rosenfels is on KFAN out of Minneapolis because of his Vikings connection. He said when he was with Miami Tim Bowens was known for never working out during the off-season. He said when he was with the Dolphins, they were doing their preseason check ins that included a bunch of physical tests….one of which was the bench press. He said Bowens….who he said he never saw work out during the season either….got on the bench and did 10 reps of 415 pounds, asked the current strength coach if that was good enough and left. Fricking amazing. TimBo was monster strong.

If he did 10 reps of 415, he was working out some time, maybe not in organized team things or at the team facilities, but no way he maintained that level of strength without doing something. ON THIS REFEREE ISSUE:

Someone on this board said, in effect, “after the play is over (and the BAD CALL), there’s NOTHING you can do about it. Complaining is a waste of time.”

THAT person could NOT be more wrong!!!

After the play, and game, were over, DON SHULA would make a report to the media about the vital mistake that cost his team the game. THEN he’d send tapes and photos to league headquarters that backed up his claim. As head of the NFL’s competition committee (which oversaw officials’ game performance) he’d see to it that biased, incompetent, officials WERE NOT rehired for the following season. On occasion, he’d even ask the league NOT to assign certain referees to any more Dolphin games. His “requests’ usually were honored. On at least one occasion, SHULA told an official “We’ve got one camera ON YOU the entire game. If you screw up, Rozelle will have a copy of it the next day!!!!!” It’s NO COINCIDENCE that, in most seasons, the Dolphins were among the least penalized teams in the NFL!!!

That’s directly opposite of what the current Casper Milquetoast regime does. In fact, I am not aware of anything substantive that Ross’s employees do to maximize Miami’s chances in getting a fair deal from NFL officials. Indeed, these officials seem too busy kissing Bob Kraft’s ASS to have any concern for Miami!! And it shows!! Miami is among the more penalized teams in most recent seasons. And Steve Ross continues to fiddle while season ticket holders continue to burn!

The Dolphins need an activist, knowledgeable, owner who takes a keen interest in hiring the best people for every job the franchise offers. That process SHOULD START WITH A NEW OWNER!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Don Shula was head of the officiating committee, which had nothing to do with owners Joe Robbie or Wayne Huizenga. Sounds like you want an owner who is going to run the team like Jerry Jones.

That surprised me as well, Rockphin. I would imagine (off the cuff and without reviewing the plays) that we went with GL (or “BIG”) personnel in many of those sits.

Just remember, we don’t have Suh any longer. I think we’ll likely regress in this stat come this year… unless Jordan Phillips becomes a consistent FORCE.

I truly believe that if Phillips finally emerges like we’ve been expecting him to, we may not miss Suh as much as many think. And if Raekwon McMillan is as good as advertised, he’s going to be a great asset in stopping the run.

ESPN reporter Mike Rodak: Weighing 228 pounds and having run a 4.46-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, Ballage checks all the boxes from a size and athletic-ability standpoint. He fell to the fourth round in part because of his lack of top-level production at Arizona State, where he split carries. He will face a similar obstacle as a rookie in Miami behind the ascending Kenyan Drake and the ageless Frank Gore, so it is difficult to project Ballage making significant contributions in his first NFL season. His best path to playing time will be Gore showing enough signs of decline at 35 for Ballage to receive the short-yardage reps that might otherwise be allocated to Gore.””””

It gonna be like the dance scenes from footloose,
With one or the other spinning the other around on the tip of his finger like a frisbee…

I wanted Baker baddd, but I must confess,
The potential above scenario had me somewhat questioning whether or not it’d be advisable…

I figured from the get go that the Browns would be stupid not to take Baker, while I was hoping they would at #1, (if we couldn’t have him), I just wanted him not to land in the East!!

And Yea what you said below,
I absolutely hated the unnecessary one handed
        “”look at me”” BS!!!

        GOFINS!!!

I think the discipline of the teams now days is the change in culture/character of the people playing the game. There are still old school players but for the most part its a bunch of spoiled kids playing this game for the money of it.
