Camp Battles – LB

Oh yeah!!!  This is the unit that has me excited, because we haven’t had good play at MLB in a while, and this year, Raekwon McMillan is back and ready to be the tackling machine we have missed.  I’m not going to count T.J. McDonald, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Reshad Jones in this article, but we know they all will be rotating in on passing downs and basically playing nickel LB, whether they officially call it that or not.  These 2 things, Raekwon being there to stop run plays, and the combination of the safeties and LB Jerome Baker in coverage make me feel much more confident about our defense going forward.   The need for Kiko Alonso to be the guy in coverage is now over, and the Dolphins will be in better hands for it.  We’ve seen enough of him unsuccessfully chasing players catching footballs and being a good 5 yards behind them.

We currently have 10 LB’s on the roster, but once we get down to the serious cuts, we’ll probably have only six remaining.  Let’s look at what we have, and who I think sticks, and who I think doesn’t.

Kiko Alonso – LB  6’3 239  28YO

Alonso has been a steady performer the Dolphins.  He played and started in 15 games in 2016, and all 16 games in 2017.  Although he struggles in coverage, he’s been a good player for us.  Last year Alonso finished with 115 total tackles (79 solo), along with 2 sacks and 2 FF’s.  Kiko will be playing mostly on the weak side which I think is exactly where he belongs.  In 2016, he had the huge INT and TD return for 60 yards.  I think he’s a little under appreciated here, but he’s been a solid, dependable player.

____________________________________________________

Raekwon McMillan – LB  6’2 248  22YO

Raekwon was injured in the season opener covering the first punt of the year as he collided with teammate Deon Lacey.  He tore his ACL, but he is now fully recovered and ready to take the reins of this defense as the defensive signal caller, the MLB.  The big 250 LB ran a 4.6 40 at the combine, and he had a very nice career at Ohio St.  I think McMillan will be the difference maker in this LB corps.  Last year Chase Allen and Mike Hull filled in some, and while Allen flashed some, I don’t think he made the impact that McMillan will for us this season.  He’s already shown he’s ready as even early in practices in OTA’s, McMillan was adjusting the defense and putting players in the appropriate position.

____________________________________________________

Stephone Anthony – LB 6’3 245  26YO

The SLB is less set in stone than the WLB and MLB spots are.  At the moment, Stephone Anthony is manning the SLB spot, but he may face some competition from rookie Jerome Baker, and possibly even Chase Allen.  The former 1st RD pick (#31) of the New Orleans Saints started out as a MLB, but the Saints coaches felt the strain of the mental aspects of the game lessened his play, so they tried to work him at OLB, but after a promising rookie season, his play fell off and then so did his playing time, which made him expendable for a 5th RD pick last season.  He will be given every chance to win the job, but he’s going to have to show a little something, because the 5th we spent on acquiring pales when compared to the 3rd we spent on Jerome Baker.  This may be the last chance for Anthony to be a starter.

____________________________________________________

Terrence Garvin – LB  6’3 242  27YO

Garvin is basically a ST’s standout.  He can also provide depth, but Garvin’s meal ticket is his special teams prowess.  Garvin has played for the 3 NFL teams, and at each stop, he’s been the ST’s ace.  Garvin was signed in 2013 by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an UDFA.  He played 3 seasons for the Steelers, and then was picked up by the Redskins in 2016.  Last season he played for the Seattle Seahawks.  Garvin has started only 4 games in his 5 year career.

___________________________________________________

Mike Hull  – LB  6’0 235  27YO

Hull was signed as an UDFA here in MIA in 2015.  Hull appeared in only 3 games as a rookie in 2015, but played in all 16 games in both ’16 and ’17, with 4 starts.  Hull plays special teams, so he that’s where his value is, plus he can play MLB in a pinch, but just don’t expect a lot.  He will continue to be a special teams player and a backup if he makes the cut.

__________________________________________________

Jerome Baker – LB  6’1 229  21YO

Baker was our 3rd RD pick (#73) in the 2018 NFL Draft.  Baker now gives us 2 LB’s drafted from Ohio State (Raekwon McMillan).  His strengths are Kiko Alonso’s weakness, but Kiko’s strength is Jerome Baker’s weakness.  Kiko is tough playing the run, while Baker struggles to beat and shed blocks in the run game, and gets wiped out too often.  Baker’s strength is pass coverage, where he is a bit above average in that regard, and that’s Kiko’s weak point, he doesn’t cover well.  A combo of these 2 players would be ideal, but Baker could eventually replace Kiko on the weak side, or he can also displace Stephone Anthony on the strong side.  In order to do either of the two, Baker is going to have show more toughness beating blocks and making tough tackles, and continue to show development as a coverage LB.  It’s likely Baker is more of a depth player and ST’s player his rookie year, but a strong showing in TC and preseason games could change that quickly.  He also will likely get to play some nickel or dime LB if he proves competent in the preseason

_________________________________________________

Chase Allen – LB  6’3 250  25YO

Allen was signed in 2017 as an UDFA.  Allen appeared in all 16 games, and was forced to start 4 games due to injuries (McMillan) and cuts (Maualuga).  Allen definitely flashed some ability finishing with 33 total tackles (24 solo) along with a FF.  He will continue to be a ST’s player, and can provide adequate depth at any of the LB positions.

_________________________________________________

Quentin Poling – LB  6’1 235  24YO

Poling was Miami’s 7th RD pick in the 2018 NFL draft (#227).  He is another athletic player, somewhat in the mold of Jerome Baker, but Poling played at Ohio, not Ohio State.  He’s a decent cover LB, and likes to chase and tackle.  At Ohio, Poling made 43.5 tackles behind the LOS, in addition to 18 sacks, and 7 INT’s.  He will have to continue to make those type of plays in the preseason to make the cut.  The best chance for Poling to make it would be if the Dolphins don’t see enough from Stephone Anthony, which is a possibility.  Right now I’d give him an outside shot, but if Hull or Anthony or Allen are cut, that could give Poling the in.

________________________________________________

Frank Ginda – LB  6’0 245  21YO

Frank Ginda was signed a week ago as an UDFA.    he was signed right after LB Mike McCray unexpectedly decided to retire from the NFL.  Ginda was a fine player at San Jose St.  Last season, Ginda finished with 173 total tackles (94 solo) which led the NCAA in tackles. He shows good instincts, and always flows to the ball.  He needs to work on shedding tackles, but Ginda is a player.  He’s somewhat of a longshot, but if he can show the same type of play he had at San Jose St, he might be a surprise roster invitee.

________________________________________________

So that’s the LB’s, and again, I’m pretty enthusiastic about this group.  I can’t wait to see Raekwon manning the middle, and I’m encouraged that if Stephone Anthony doesn’t step up his game, the Dolphins have at least 2-3 guys that can replace him and give us something.

I think we found one of those UDFA OL from 2015 who bounced around between SEA and NYJ a bit and he’s now hitting his stride with us. There’s a lot of them out there. He’s got the size and ability but he needed to polish his game. Sometimes if rookies are that raw they go undrafted. Back in the day he might of have been an 8th or 9th rd pick etc.

    IT’S A MIRACLE!!!!! – – – I SAY IT’S A MIRACLE!!!!
AFTER YEARS of frustration, I FINALLY CONVINCED THE DOLPHINS’ TICKET OFFICE to GO BACK to regular, REAL, tickets for the upcoming season!! –And, lo and behold, my REAL ticket package arrived today WITH ALL THE TICKETS!!
    ————–
TWO YEARS AGO my season tix arrived AFTER THE PRESEASON WAS OVER!!! Ross’s ticket boys REFUSED to refund me for those two games AND they also REFUSED TO CREDIT MY ACCOUNT for tickets I NEVER RECEIVED!! – – LAST YEAR, I got my tix BUT NO PARKING PASSES!!! AGAIN, Ross’s ticket guys REFUSED to refund me or give me a credit for next season’s tix. SO I did not attend preseason games for the second consecutive season. (Finally, I was sent TWO SETS of parking passes last season in late September—IDIOTS!!!). ALL the while, I am trying to get the Dolphins to GO BACK FROM I-PAD Generated tickets to REAL CARDBOARD TICKETS FOR EACH GAME and PRESTO—I GOT “THE WHOLE PACKAGE TODAY!!!
    ————-
NOT SURE if Mrs. OD will be healthy enough to attend games this season. But she IS slowly improving with her exercise regimen. AT LEAST she’ll have the option of going, which she did NOT have for parts of the last two seasons.
    ————
MY GUESS is that MORE season ticket holders THIS YEAR went with the regular tickets over the I-PAD generated ones by a wide margin. I INTEND to call my account rep after the preseason is over and get his take on this.
    ————
NOTE TO THOSE ATTENDING THE LIONS FEST GAME: The puny map we were given of the parking lot shows that the Orange Lot has been reduced in size and split up. A note with my ticket package says that this new configuration is subject to change, and may BE CHANGED with little or no warning. Perhaps the Orange Lot will be moved to Calder Race Track, about a half mile north of the football stadium, later in the season?? –WHO KNOWS???
    ———–
FINALLY, the ticket package contains NOTHING about the improvements/changes at the stadium, itself. NO glossy photos. NO promotions. NOT EVEN a diagram of the stadium and the seat selections. I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED SOMETHING in that regard, since the 2021 Super Bowl will be played in Hard Head Stadium. Something tells me that Ross is through with his changes & “upgrades” and is now mulling over how to sell the team & the stadium for an immense profit.
    ———–
THAT, in itself, would be the biggest improvement of all – – – a NEW, and, hopefully, competent, owner who can pick the right people to run his football team (currently 16 games below .500 during the Ross era).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, who was the owner during a 20-44 stretch between 04-07? That’s a 31.3% winning pct.

Ross has a 47.5 winning pct. since 08 when he bought 50% of the team from Huizenga which is not good but he didn’t take over a team in good standings. Just saying! He’s hired two head coaches since being the owner in just over a decade.

Remember, it was Huizenga who hired Parcells leading to Ireland and Sparano (RIP) if you want to go down that road. Ross’ HC’s have a 29-35 (Philbin) and 16-16 (Gase) record over 6 years. Again not good enough but nowhere near as bad as this team was when he bought the team.

I can’t argue the season ticket stuff with you because I have no say in that, but the record stuff you are off on because there was no stability when Ross bought the team. No historic QB or anything like that. He didn’t buy a juggernaut team and ruin it. But he’s trying to end that and you give no credit to him for giving the team every resource to get better. Cheap he is not! Joe Robbie was cheap. But he had your idol and legend Don Shula. Coaches like Shula don’t come around often. And even he had warts during his term. But he won a lot. We all know that. Had nothing to do with the owners and everything to do with the HC.

Anything Howard does in camp needs to be looked at as a star lighting it up, any player that he does it to needs to be watched, but not bashed, because of Howard’s greatness. Now if Parker isn’t getting it done against other CBs, then there’s a problem. If Gase only lines up Howard on Parker, then he may be an ass, but we know he can be stubborn like that, ask Mondo😁

Chris Archer kept hearing from friends and former teammates that the Pittsburgh Pirates were different. The proof came in the waves of people who approached the veteran pitcher as he walked the concourse at Pittsburgh International Airport on Wednesday morning, just hours removed from an uncharacteristically aggressive trade.

As strangers came up to welcome him to a town he barely knows and a team he had only watched from afar, one thought kept running through his head. “Everybody knows who I am,” Archer marveled.

seeing that passer rating is a “team stat” those picks have little to do with Tannehill…..the Miami Dolphins threw those picks!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tannehill is being the ultimate team player, pumping up Xavien Howard.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Passer rating IS and ALWAYS WILL BE a team stat. Get over it already.

The Interceptions MAY or may not have been Tannehills fault. Could have been the WR’s fault or could have just been damn good play by X. We cannot tell from twitter posts.

Either way, it is practice and here is hoping everyone involved in the interceptions on the team learn from it and grow.

  71. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Xavien has become a shutdown CB (and sure as hell seems so!), opposing Offenses are going to be throwing to the other side quite often. That said, the camp battle for the spot opposite Xavien is REALLY getting intriguing… and most important, at that.

  72. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Passer rating is not a team stat just like rushing yards are not a team stat, they are individual stats…sure the team is involved in all aspects of the game but the passer rating rest squarely on the QB’s shoulders as does the rushing yards from a RB.

Team stats are defined as team offense and team defense total team stats

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

wrong and will always be wrong. There is not talking around it. you are wrong. if a wr drops a perfectly thrown pass it effects the passer rating. if he catches a circus catch that SHOULD have been intercepted and saves the QB’s ass it effects the passer rating.

Passes have two parts the throw and the catch. You cannot isolate one from the other. Therefor it is a rating of the effectiveness of the pass not the passer.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

and those two scenarios for the most part cancel each other out….the same with a RB if the center misses a block and get’s pegged behind the line is that a team stat??

if we go by your way of thinking then there are no individual stats.

Team stats are clearly defined as total team stats.

Passer Rating is an individual stat

That shit needs to be cleaned up pronto!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Both could be true — if they are really concentrating on the penalties that could mean they are telling the practice reps to call them rather than let the play run.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

ahhh good point. there could be more because the practice refs are calling it tighter. I didn’t think of that.

I thought it was interesting earlier, where Reshad Jones came in untouched for a Sack (went by — not through — Gesicki). The beat reporters were saying that they’ve NEVER seen that Defensive formation before.

I’d love to see video of that play/formation… but I’m not holding my breathe. Seems we’re going to have some rather exotic looks this year!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

      wide 9???

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nah, Bro. We’ve been doing the ‘wide-9’ for a few seasons. Sounds more like Reshad was playing at the LOS… and I’d guess they had TJ and Minkah at Safety.

I’d like to know how many we had lined up at the LOS and how many we had playing LB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d be willing to bet that YES… Reshad was lined up @ ‘wide-9’, but the beat reporters are saying that the formation was like nothing they’ve ever seen. So it wasn’t a full ‘wide-9’ formation. It was probably something like an exotic 5-2 look or SOMETHING.

        I’m curious!!!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Have no real clue on how the 3 safety offense will work, but Jones, TJ and Minkah can all get to the QB fast and hard. Any of them could be coming on any given play…. and not gonna be like a “fooled you by throwing a CB at you” kinda thing.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think the 3 safety deal is to cover these big T.Es case in point NE’s Gronkowski

  78. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BOOM! 100% with ya, man!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Let’s say Reshad is lined up @ ‘wide-9’ as we’re speculating: his assignment is the TE. If the TE stays home, Reshad will blitz. If the TE runs a route, Reshad is all over him like flies on poop from the jump.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s part of it, but also includes a lot of flexibility in other ways. Especially when one of the safeties is a Swiss Army knife.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Truth be told, ALL of Minkah, Reshad, and TJ are Swiss Army knives. Minkah might be the deluxe version, but all of them are very unique and versatile.

How is he stunning anyone? Hes been doing this since the later part of the season. Brady even praised him after he picked him twice. Hes the real deal, breakout year only applies, because he didn’t start doing it until late in the season, but anyone that picks Howard to have a breakout year and thinks hes going out on a limb, please.

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I’m not concerned if Phillips has a great year for us during his contract year, he will be helping the team and maybe making us good enough to be in the playoffs. What happens with him next year and beyond I’ll worry about next year.

  84. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I would think the reason for more penalties Rock, would be, because the QBs are using more hard counts and different snap counts and not just go, go go, Omaha.

We already know we have lazy reporters, you shouldn’t have to ask this question, the reporter should’ve included the reason why it’s happening or said, nothing has changed with the snap count, but the penalties just keep piling up.

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
It matters if they decide to sign him to a big contract because he balls out this year and then goes back to his norm.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right, but why worry about that now? Let him have a great season first. We have to have someone play the position, if he outprices himself, odds are we won’t pay him.

What if the TE delays his pattern?
    ————
Yup, I’ve already thought of that, too. AND, a delayed screen to the TE’s side, after the TE clears out Reshad.

It’s a chess game, man. For every strike, there is a counter-strike. The idea is to mix it up and be unpredictable. What the reporters saw today was likely just a hint of what’s to come. We’ll be working inside the Saban Dome on these things when the media can’t leak what they see.

    INTERESTING things are happening!!!

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The three safety look is no thing new. It is called the “big nickel” The only difference is you substitute a safety for a corner.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Correct, but we’re talking about a brand new formation that’s never been seen before by our beat reporters. And it seems that Reshad was playing at the LOS (speculation, of course).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That was more situational though. Could have seen them going a step beyond with our 3 safeties just being part of our nickel, but then they gave McCain top slot CB money. Have a feeling we are gonna be in the “big dime” a whole lot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Probably just one LB unless we go with just 3 DL and disguise blitzes then maybe two.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One LB, with TJ playing the role of the other one most times will be …. even if Gase has made clear he is not an LB. I’m betting that absent injury all three of our safeties will get more reps than all but one of the LBs.
