Camp Battles – LB

Oh yeah!!!  This is the unit that has me excited, because we haven’t had good play at MLB in a while, and this year, Raekwon McMillan is back and ready to be the tackling machine we have missed.  I’m not going to count T.J. McDonald, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Reshad Jones in this article, but we know they all will be rotating in on passing downs and basically playing nickel LB, whether they officially call it that or not.  These 2 things, Raekwon being there to stop run plays, and the combination of the safeties and LB Jerome Baker in coverage make me feel much more confident about our defense going forward.   The need for Kiko Alonso to be the guy in coverage is now over, and the Dolphins will be in better hands for it.  We’ve seen enough of him unsuccessfully chasing players catching footballs and being a good 5 yards behind them.

We currently have 10 LB’s on the roster, but once we get down to the serious cuts, we’ll probably have only six remaining.  Let’s look at what we have, and who I think sticks, and who I think doesn’t.

Kiko Alonso – LB  6’3 239  28YO

Alonso has been a steady performer the Dolphins.  He played and started in 15 games in 2016, and all 16 games in 2017.  Although he struggles in coverage, he’s been a good player for us.  Last year Alonso finished with 115 total tackles (79 solo), along with 2 sacks and 2 FF’s.  Kiko will be playing mostly on the weak side which I think is exactly where he belongs.  In 2016, he had the huge INT and TD return for 60 yards.  I think he’s a little under appreciated here, but he’s been a solid, dependable player.

____________________________________________________

Raekwon McMillan – LB  6’2 248  22YO

Raekwon was injured in the season opener covering the first punt of the year as he collided with teammate Deon Lacey.  He tore his ACL, but he is now fully recovered and ready to take the reins of this defense as the defensive signal caller, the MLB.  The big 250 LB ran a 4.6 40 at the combine, and he had a very nice career at Ohio St.  I think McMillan will be the difference maker in this LB corps.  Last year Chase Allen and Mike Hull filled in some, and while Allen flashed some, I don’t think he made the impact that McMillan will for us this season.  He’s already shown he’s ready as even early in practices in OTA’s, McMillan was adjusting the defense and putting players in the appropriate position.

____________________________________________________

Stephone Anthony – LB 6’3 245  26YO

The SLB is less set in stone than the WLB and MLB spots are.  At the moment, Stephone Anthony is manning the SLB spot, but he may face some competition from rookie Jerome Baker, and possibly even Chase Allen.  The former 1st RD pick (#31) of the New Orleans Saints started out as a MLB, but the Saints coaches felt the strain of the mental aspects of the game lessened his play, so they tried to work him at OLB, but after a promising rookie season, his play fell off and then so did his playing time, which made him expendable for a 5th RD pick last season.  He will be given every chance to win the job, but he’s going to have to show a little something, because the 5th we spent on acquiring pales when compared to the 3rd we spent on Jerome Baker.  This may be the last chance for Anthony to be a starter.

____________________________________________________

Terrence Garvin – LB  6’3 242  27YO

Garvin is basically a ST’s standout.  He can also provide depth, but Garvin’s meal ticket is his special teams prowess.  Garvin has played for the 3 NFL teams, and at each stop, he’s been the ST’s ace.  Garvin was signed in 2013 by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an UDFA.  He played 3 seasons for the Steelers, and then was picked up by the Redskins in 2016.  Last season he played for the Seattle Seahawks.  Garvin has started only 4 games in his 5 year career.

___________________________________________________

Mike Hull  – LB  6’0 235  27YO

Hull was signed as an UDFA here in MIA in 2015.  Hull appeared in only 3 games as a rookie in 2015, but played in all 16 games in both ’16 and ’17, with 4 starts.  Hull plays special teams, so he that’s where his value is, plus he can play MLB in a pinch, but just don’t expect a lot.  He will continue to be a special teams player and a backup if he makes the cut.

__________________________________________________

Jerome Baker – LB  6’1 229  21YO

Baker was our 3rd RD pick (#73) in the 2018 NFL Draft.  Baker now gives us 2 LB’s drafted from Ohio State (Raekwon McMillan).  His strengths are Kiko Alonso’s weakness, but Kiko’s strength is Jerome Baker’s weakness.  Kiko is tough playing the run, while Baker struggles to beat and shed blocks in the run game, and gets wiped out too often.  Baker’s strength is pass coverage, where he is a bit above average in that regard, and that’s Kiko’s weak point, he doesn’t cover well.  A combo of these 2 players would be ideal, but Baker could eventually replace Kiko on the weak side, or he can also displace Stephone Anthony on the strong side.  In order to do either of the two, Baker is going to have show more toughness beating blocks and making tough tackles, and continue to show development as a coverage LB.  It’s likely Baker is more of a depth player and ST’s player his rookie year, but a strong showing in TC and preseason games could change that quickly.  He also will likely get to play some nickel or dime LB if he proves competent in the preseason

_________________________________________________

Chase Allen – LB  6’3 250  25YO

Allen was signed in 2017 as an UDFA.  Allen appeared in all 16 games, and was forced to start 4 games due to injuries (McMillan) and cuts (Maualuga).  Allen definitely flashed some ability finishing with 33 total tackles (24 solo) along with a FF.  He will continue to be a ST’s player, and can provide adequate depth at any of the LB positions.

_________________________________________________

Quentin Poling – LB  6’1 235  24YO

Poling was Miami’s 7th RD pick in the 2018 NFL draft (#227).  He is another athletic player, somewhat in the mold of Jerome Baker, but Poling played at Ohio, not Ohio State.  He’s a decent cover LB, and likes to chase and tackle.  At Ohio, Poling made 43.5 tackles behind the LOS, in addition to 18 sacks, and 7 INT’s.  He will have to continue to make those type of plays in the preseason to make the cut.  The best chance for Poling to make it would be if the Dolphins don’t see enough from Stephone Anthony, which is a possibility.  Right now I’d give him an outside shot, but if Hull or Anthony or Allen are cut, that could give Poling the in.

________________________________________________

Frank Ginda – LB  6’0 245  21YO

Frank Ginda was signed a week ago as an UDFA.    he was signed right after LB Mike McCray unexpectedly decided to retire from the NFL.  Ginda was a fine player at San Jose St.  Last season, Ginda finished with 173 total tackles (94 solo) which led the NCAA in tackles. He shows good instincts, and always flows to the ball.  He needs to work on shedding tackles, but Ginda is a player.  He’s somewhat of a longshot, but if he can show the same type of play he had at San Jose St, he might be a surprise roster invitee.

________________________________________________

So that’s the LB’s, and again, I’m pretty enthusiastic about this group.  I can’t wait to see Raekwon manning the middle, and I’m encouraged that if Stephone Anthony doesn’t step up his game, the Dolphins have at least 2-3 guys that can replace him and give us something.

Not sure if matters much at this point, but Phins put out a depth chart. Some tea leaves though.
    ——-

    — Tight end Mike Gesicki is fifth-string and Durham Smythe is sixth-string.
    — Linebacker Jerome Baker is second-string, behind Kiko Alonso.
    — David Fales and Brock Oswelier are listed as co-second teamers

And especially a sign that Lippett will not like:

“Xaven Howard and Bobby McCain are listed as cornerback starters. Cordrea Tankersley and Torry McTyer are listed as second-teamers. One will likely start. Tony Lippett is a third-teamer to start the preseason.”

No, the Miami Dolphins aren’t expecting a new version of Ryan Tannehill. However, their season will hinge on whether the quarterback can be the version he was before suffering a torn ACL in August 2017. Tannehill (career passer rating of 86.5) was a serviceable starter, which gives Miami a fighting chance.

I played TE, and when I wasn’t sure on the snap count I’d just watch the ball, like the D does. I know you better get a jump against Quinn, Wake, and Harris, but come on man.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I read some idiots report the other day saying Minkah wasn’t going to start, backed up by the depth chart, until maybe midseason. He also talked about him being quiet during camp, because of the lack of picks. More to back his idiotic rant was the fact that no recent Fins draft pick, other than OL, has started out of the gate. McMillan would have last year, so…

Rookies have to earn it, that’s why they are low. I cant believe Mando hasn’t figured this out. Gase has said it like 400 times, and as soon as the depth chart comes out these guys lose all sense of reality.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    So who is right?

    Chris Perkins

    Armando Salguero

    @ArmandoSalguero
Kenny Stills wide open down the field but he wasn’t running so ball overthrown.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I dont value Perkins’ opinion too much. Mando can be blind to things that should go without saying, but he can see what’s in front of him.

If you think about it Perkins didn’t notice Stllis jogging, regardless of the rush, Mando did, so Mando is most likely correct.

Davon Godchaux hasn’t locked up DT spot ahead of Jordan Phillips, but he’s definitely ahead of Phillips, who was starter at start of camp.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe it isn’t about who starts, but how these 4 play in tandem. Phillips/guy from Det and Godchaux/Vincent.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — if the DTs want a nickname it should be “fresh meat.” Gonna be a lot of in and out unless someone really shows it.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Going to be a lot of in and out regardless of how great any of them play. The rotation used will dictate that. Maybe a little less rotation in the 4th, using the hot hand, but otherwise should be a pretty even split at DT.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We have way too many new faces including at least 5 rookies, that are going to be playing important roles early in the season, to expect a very good opening to the season. I still expect to win the first 3, but I’m not expecting it to be easy or smooth.

On Thursday, expect a rough start, with presnap penalties and drops and missed assignments…

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Agree. Too much changes on team to figure out how this team is going to do

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not about how they’re going to do, but how long it’s going to take before this years team starts playing at a level close to what will be it’s best this year.

Maybe the D is really good right away and it allows the O some time to gel. I have no idea how we start the year, just hope it’s good enough that we start 3-0, we really need to win those winnable games out of the gate.

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Osweiler with an int. I’m not really concerned with camp ints, because these guys are all vets, they make throws into tight windows (riskier throws), that they normally wouldn’t do as much in a real game, its practice, and everyone isn’t playing at game speed.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    @phinschris

No real surprise in my opinion. Been saying for months that MarQueis Gray is ready to be a starting NFL TE. #Dolphins

I hope Gray progresses to the #1 TE, that would take all the pressure off Gesicki and allow him to just do what he does, instead of worrying about all the blocking that starting TEs do.

Cleveland is trading former first-round pick WR Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills for a draft pick, per source.

Coleman was the player the Browns selected after trading the No. 2 overall pick to Philadelphia so the Eagles could draft Carson Wentz.

    • D's avatar D says:

Interestng if he had been traded to us, then the Brown would have traded number 2 to the Eagles for Wentz, the Eagles who used the 8th pick they got in a trade from us in order to make that trade. Borwns then traded back with Tenn at 8th to 15th and took Coleman, which then a trade to us would have brought that 8th round pick back to us.

A long time ago, 1989, I was a Pepsi man and we had an event just for the route drivers at what was once Boardwalk and Baseball in Haines City (formerly Circus World before that) well Lou Piniella and Willie Stargell were there to give us a motivational talk plus a meet and greet. It was cool and they were great. I remember it being 1989, in fact it was the night of the earthquake that Al Michaels called during the World Series, I asked Lou right to his face if he was going to manage my Reds and he waffled but sure enough he took the job soon after and we were wire to wire Champions. But that night was a lot of fun, we had the park all to ourselves, up until the ride home and I heard all the earthquake stuff. I imitated Willies batting stance for him, he said, “not bad”. His role has since grown as he is now the Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development, a position that includes academic counseling and creating personal, leadership and career development opportunities for our student-athletes.
Greg’s passion for working with student-athletes stems from his success in both academics and athletics. Originally a walk-on receiver/punter at Stanford University, Greg went on to become a key receiver for the Cardinal football team while majoring in Product Design Engineering. After college, Greg went on to spend 8 years in the NFL playing for the Chargers, Dolphins, Vikings and Saints. After hanging up his cleats, Greg returned to San Diego to get a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University.

Greg’s desire to advise student-athletes stems from the relationships he has with the people who helped him succeed in both school and athletics, relationships he still maintains today. “No one succeeds as a student-athlete by him or herself. It takes a team to support our student-athletes and help them achieve their personal best. I enjoy being part of the journey, doing all I can to help a student really enjoy the college experience.”

On a personal note, Greg and his wife, Sharon, have been married since 2011 and have 3 daughters (Avery, Cameron and Sloane).

But Drake is a young guy at a delicate stage of development. He must be kept happy and motivated for long term value. And he’s very fast with a great skillset.

    GOOD NEWS FOR DOLPHIN FANS RE: UPCOMING exhibition game vs. Bucs;
From today’s TAMPA BAY TIMES; “…A RASH OF INJURIES TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE OFFENSIVE LINE is suddenly a bigger concern for Thursday. Starting right tackle Demar Dotson is making ..slow recovery from TWO knee surgeries and hasn’t really been involved in practice. Caleb Benenoch, expected to start at right guard, has been out since suffering an undisclosed injury in Friday’s practice. Backup right Leonard Wester has missed the past week with an injury. On Monday, his backup, Cole Gardner, missed practice with an injury.”

Thjere are other injuries that have the Bucs concerned, but these O-Line injuries have been potentially devastating. Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn could both have big nights on Thursday. And our run defense also could benefit from this situation.

    Y’all have a great day. I’m out!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Harris is the guy that might benefit, he’s hungry.

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hope McTyre wins the starting job, because he’s the speedster. I think it’s more important to have someone that can really cover vs someone that is going to give his man 6 catches a game, but intercept a pass every 3 games.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I dont know that McTyre is the cover guy, because I’ve never seen him play, it’s just a logical assumption based on the fact that he’s rapidly moved up the depth chart and I haven’t heard of him intercepting a lot of passes in camp.

To maximize Howard’s lockdown skills, if we had the CB opposite him playing tight coverage too, where’s the QB going with the ball? Forcing it in, or to the TE (Minkah anyone), or to the slot (I’m ok if they want to challenge Bobby).

Maybe OD makes a whole lot of difference. A stat geek at CBS Sports calculated which team has the best home field advantage based on the past few seasons, with the most recent ones counting the most. And best home field advantage in the NFL went to the Phins. Rule of thumb is 3 points — we came in at 5.45.
    ——————————-
Best weighted HFA goes to … Miami?

The team that springs to mind as having the biggest home-field advantage in football certainly isn’t the Dolphins, and they may not even make some experts’ top 30. But this team is consistently much better on both sides of the ball in Miami, including scoring 24.1 points at home last year and 25.4 the year before, as opposed to 12.4 and 19.4 points, respectively, on the road. The Dolphins also gave up 6.5 fewer points per game at home last year, though on defense they tend to be just as good (or bad) at home as on the road in most seasons.

Even though the wHFA number suggests the Dolphins are 5.45 points better at home, I’m not quite willing to give them that much of a home-field advantage, thanks largely to playing last year entirely with a retread QB and their historical trend of not being that great at home. Still, the numbers are enough to bump them a half-point over a standard team and give them a HFA of 3.5.

  77. D's avatar D says:

To be a good CB you have to be able to run routes with the receivers and you have to have all the skills they have, at least to be a true lock down guy. If you are talking zone coverage, or if you have an island CB on the opposite side of you, you dont have to be glued to the guy, you just cant let him get a ton of separation. Speed is nice if your coverage isnt strong, having catch up speed can erase what was initally blow coverage. If you can cover, your speed just has to be decent because you are going to get help from the safety.

With Howard, we can almost go one deep, and have a guy like McTyer play close enough to make the QB’s look underneath, where we hope that Jones/Fitz/TJ/McMillan are waiting. With Tankersly and/or Lippett rotating we could have fresh legs on any of them deep into the game.

This defense could be a coverage nightmare if it works to its potential. There should be a lot of pressure on QB’s and there should be good coverage, both of which should play off each other and result in sacks and ints.

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If McMillan is as advertised we should be decent against the run, in which case our D will be top 10.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think he makes us better against the run and pass. He seems to be a true MLB which is the QB of the D, and thats something we havent had in any of the LB’s we have had in there. I think Allen did a decent job, but as a rookie its only a role that a few guys can just step right into and take control over. That seems to be the strongest attribute i have heard about McMillan so im hopeful we finally have a guy who gets everybody lined up right and assignments called out, and someone that can pre-snap read the offense and help us have a good first step off the snap. If we get that out of him, we are going to be a major step forward on defense. It might not happen right off, so im expecting to have to be patient with him, but like you said, if he is as advertised, we will get there.

Ill take lives up to right now. Im not going to heap undo pressure on this kid, ill take “slightly more productive” than we have had, from him year 1. Im looking for something 4-500 yards and 4-5 TD’s i think. That would be a good jumping off spot.

To me this would be some great number to get from the receiving corp.6-700 from Wilson Amendola and Stills each. Another 300 from Grant and 800+ from Parker Then another 800 or so from the TE’s and 200-300 from RB’s. Those number would show production from Parker, a good dispersion of the ball, and all aspects of the offense working correctly. Tanny would end up with about 3900-4300 yards. Those numbers would also indicate we have something going in the running game too, maybe not to ORobs standards but they would be good enough that we would have to have a balance to our offense to get them and also if we are winning it would be because we were controlling the clock. 250 or so passing yards, and 150 – 175 rushing per game.

I dont think the purpose of our offense is to have bulk yardage on any one receiver, and i think if we did something isnt working right, or definately not working the way we want ti to. Ill take working, despite how we get it, but when its not working as intended, then the coaches are having to alter their game plan and that never seems to work out very long.

Only 150 -175 yards a game? Is that all, 2400 to 2800 yards on the ground, lol. 3165 is the all time record and that Pat’s team didn’t pass.

Mike Hype! Love it! Now he needs to play up to the hype, and I think he will. I wouldn’t be shocked if he has a season similar to Evan Engram had last season for the Giants

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He probably won’t catch that many passes though

      • D's avatar D says:

I could see him next year become more a focused part of the offense but this year i think the ball is going to be spread around with the receivers a lot more. I think though the intent of this offense is to run with two TE’s and make TE’s and RB on equal footing with WR’s are receivers. I think our RBs are ready for their part, but i dont think our noob TE’s are ready to be thrown in the deep end yet.

    Yep
It was a turbulent time for me!
    Went from the Buc’s
    Followed Jimmy Leland to Florida
    Then the Astro’s
Then gave up on the sport until the Stro’s drug me back into it!

    I see, fair weather fan😁

D – I think Gesicki is a pass catcher, and they’re going to let him do that. Like I said, he probably won’t have 64 catches like Engram did, but he might end up with similar yardage and 50 catches. That’s like 3 catches a game, not unreasonable
