2018 Season – Game 8 – Dolphins @ Texans TNF

The Fest, it was beautiful.  Great meeting some new, very cool people.  Great spending time during the week with those I’ve already met.  The Game, anything but beautiful.  I would say to most of our surprise, it was the defense that apparently got stuck in the team hotel, and didn’t make it to the game.  Quite a few were so concerned about the play of QB Brock Osweiler, and it was our defense, which had been playing opportunistic football, that really let us down.

I, and a few others, including Bookman’s pal and Lions fan Fred, felt like the score didn’t accurately portray what we all saw on Sunday.  We were thrashed, and the 10 point differential doesn’t tell the story.  At the game, it’s hard to see the individual battles, but we were getting wiped out, and run over all day long.  248 yards rushing, with most of the damage coming from rookie Kerryon Johnson, but really, the Lions O-line, which was devastating our front 7.

I noticed so many damn substitutions that looked to me like we weren’t sure WTF we were doing.  For instance, at least twice, I saw Minkah trot onto the field, Baker trot off the field, only to have them turn around and switch back.  On the O-line, it looked to me from up on high, that Ted Larsen had an awful game, and sure enough, he was replaced by newly acquired OG/OC Wesley Johnson, who was the Jets starting C last season.

The injuries are really piling on up us and I fear what happened last year, starting the season 4-2, only to go on and lose 5 in a row is a real possibility.   We lost a dynamic offensive playmaker in WR Albert Wilson.  You could say he made enough of an impact to almost single handedly give us 2 of our 4 wins.  Now he’s gone for the season.  Our deep threat WR, who has been somewhat forgotten lately, Kenny Stills, gone for at least this week and maybe more. We will be scraping the bottom of the depth chart barrel to bring in Devante Parker and possibly LCIII (Leonte Carroo).  Hey, if you can’t get onto the field at first, hang around and wait for the attrition to happen, and you’ll get your shot.

I thought Brock Osweiler played well enough, and was surprised that some thought he played poorly.  Sure, Matt Stafford played better, but Stafford is a much better QB playing in his 10th season for the same team.  I thought Osweiler made a couple of great throws, and yes, one particular throw should have been picked, but he wasn’t the reason we didn’t win.  Even if Tannehill were 100%, I want to see more of Osweiler.  My plan would be draft a QB in 2019, and try and find your backup QB.  Maybe Osweiler is that guy.  Tannehill doesn’t fit that bill at $26M next season, so I believe this is Tannehill’s last season here, or at least it should be.

It’s tough to overcome injuries, and this will make 2 consecutive seasons where injuries have ravaged our roster.  Last season, Raekwon McMillan was injured early in game 1.  T.J. McDonald was suspended for 8 games.  OG Ted Larsen was on IR for 8 games.  CB Tony Lippett tore his achilles and missed the entire season.  Later on RT Ja’Wuan James went on IR, along with DE William Hayes.  This season has been much of the same.   TE MarQueis Gray started the avalanche, followed by Pro Bowl OG Josh Sitton.  ST’s ace LB Mike Hull and OG/OC Jake Brendel followed suit, and were both placed on the returnable IR.  William Hayes was just a little later, as he tried not to get a roughing the QB penalty by placing his full body weight on QB Derek Carr, awkwardly landed on his knee in his effort to do so, and joined the barrage of injuries and ended up on the IR.  OC Dan Kilgore who we traded for with SFO in the offseason also landed on the IR with a torn triceps muscle.

The last thing we needed was a Thursday Night Effing Football game after these injuries.  We’re short in the WR corps, with just Amendola, Grant, Parker and possibly Leonte Carroo, the latter 2 have 2 receptions for 40 yards on the season, and both of those are Parker’s.  DE Charles Harris is OUT (Disappointing!), TE A.J. Derby DNP, TE Mike Gesicki has a shoulder injury and was limited in practice, as was WR Danny Amendola and S T.J. McDonald with an ankle injury.

We still have a winning record, but can we maintain it?  We’re going to have to be creative on offense, now that 2 of our HR hitters are out (Wilson and Stills).  We’re going to have to look for Grant and Drake, and maybe our old long lost pal Devante Parker becomes a hero for a day.  On defense, we shouldn’t get run over by the Texans.  Lamar Miller has 371 yards on 95 carries for a less than stellar 3.9 YPC.  Alfred Blue has 216 yards for a 3.4 YPC average.  It shouldn’t be the run game, although QB DeShaun Watson is tied for 2nd with 216 yards rushing, so we have to contain him.  I’ve already mentioned DE Charles Harris is out, but DE Jonathan Woodard will be back.

DeShaun Watson lit up the NFL last year before getting injured, but this year has been a fall back to earth for Watson.  Watson has thrown for 1937 yards, 10 TD’s and 7 INT’s, along with his 216 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD.  WR DeAndre Hopkins is still one of the NFL’s best, but he’s been doubled quite a bit, and WR Will Fuller has been the beneficiary of much less attention on the other side.  JJ Watt is back to being JJ Watt with 46 total tackles, 7 sacks, 8 TFL, 12 QB hits, and 4 FF’s already.  We somehow managed to contain Khalil Mack, but the Bears didn’t have Jadeveon Clowney opposite him.

When we’re on defense, it’s time to start sacking the QB!  If I told you before the season that after 7 games that DT Vincent Taylor and LB Jerome Baker would be leading the team in sacks with 2 each, you’d think I was crazy.  What’s even worse is that 3 of our sacks came from William Hayes (IR) and Jordan Phillips (Waived).  That leaves only 8 sacks from our current roster.  Ugh!

For now, just figure out a way to get a win, and try to hold tough until the BYE week, which comes in Week 11.

I want to thank Stanger for his wonderful hospitality, Chef Warren for his chefness, and everyone who came down to make this last Fest another success.  I hope to see more and more of you in the coming years, and you all know I’m older than Methuselah, so please don’t wait too long!

FWIW I have had tomorrow’s game down as a loss since the schedule came out. Away on Thursday after playing on Sunday? 9/10 that is a loss. They should kill the stupid Thursday games, but they never will. GREED.

I know a lot of you guys like when the Dolphins play on Thursday because it is a nationally televised game, but I don’t even think I will watch tomorrow.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s Key West’s version of Marti Gras set over a number of days before Halloween. Whole lot more gay guys and a whole lot more craziness though. But as ER was pointing out….. an older crowd too. Damian and his wife have a house there…. and best thing heard from that side was “we don’t dress up (or down)” for it. Before that wife had great plans and I was like “gonna be a preppy tourist.”

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Fantasy fest is a “Fall Festival” with a Halloween motif in Key West, FL every year. It consists of drunken debauchery. There is a large contingent of gays that attend and wear their flamboyant over the top / under dressed costumes but the straights as we are called get into the act too. The women walk around topless (sometimes bottemless too) but all body painted so not “nude” and straight guys dress up in drag for fun too. it is a Sodam and Gamora type party.

Me and 5 of my buddies went about 10 years ago as bearded bitches (we all grew our beards out and then dressed in evening gowns like a beauty contest) and we got in a street fight with 5 “hooters girls” (who also all had beards)

When we went to Fantasy Fest back in 2004 my buddy’s cousin had a birth defect that caused one of his arms to never develop. It was like a baby arm or a T-rex arm. We were all dressed up in our girlfriends / sisters / friends sequin gowns with fake boobies, etc and we ran into a group of dudes dressed up as hooters girls. On of them started making fun of our guys’ birth defect arm calling him alligator arm and other BS and he got tire of it and whipped that little are out, grabbed the guy by his halter top with those three little T-rex fingers and started POUNDING him with his good arm. LOL

There was a moment of shock where all of us just stood and watched and then all he broke loose and we all paired off with one from the other group and threw down until the cops came and broke it up. (took 2 of them and two of us, not me luckily, to jail)

It’s a tricky one. If we don’t do it and then suck ass we probably get a new regime who could draft their own. If we do it and he sucks we’re stuck trying to fit a regime around him.
If we do it and he rocks then we’re golden.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t see it either. I was looking at what other teams he could go to but I really couldn’t find a team that would take on that contract unless they could trade their QB. That would be the case with us too. Too much money in cap hits if we released Tannehill (which I don’t think we would) and we couldn’t carry them both.

So perhaps we fall to 4-4 Thursday Night at Houston

Then we go to 5-4 at home vs Nyets

    5-5 at GB

    BYE

    6-5 at Indy

    7-5 at home vs Bills

    Then home vs Pats

    At Vikings

Which leaves at home vs Jags who aren’t who we thought they were,
    and at Bills,

9-7 is still very doable (even with all the key cogs we’ve lost to IR),

    GOFINS!!!

    Cheer your asses off!!!

ENJOY & APPRECIATE WHAT YOU’RE ABLE TO OF WHAT YOU GOT,
the seasons half over, and 2019 May never come to be!!!

    CURRENTLY,
Of the teams remaining on our schedule,
only the Pats 5-2, and Vikes 4-2-1
have a better record than our 4-3,
we’re not the only team that’s having obvious issues!!!

Losing Wilson could be the final straw for us though,
    If Parker can’t stay healthy…

If he can we should have 5 more W’s in us,
    Cuz he’s good when healthy!!!

Now DE Harris is out too,
We surely can’t afford many more injuries over the remainder,
If we’re gonna have any chance whatsoever!!!

I’m gonna enjoy every good o18 play I possibly can (W or L),
o19 is wayyy too far away not to!!!

    GOFINS!!!

    With that said…

Short week at Houston without Wilson & Stills
    Vs Clooney & Watt

    Brocktober becomes
    SquashWeiler, POOR BROCK!!!

    GOFINS!!!

REALLY SORRY THAT THE MOB DIDNT GET WHAT I GOT VS CHICAGO!!!

It’s rare you can get one any other way

In terms of the $ Carr will cost
    We don’t have it
The only way you can pull it off is if Tannehill is part of that trade

  47. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  48. D's avatar D says:

I wasnt suggesting we would keep Tannehill and Carr. I also wasnt suggesting we would trade before the trade deadline. Tanny is here this year and you are right we cat afford to add that contract along with Tanny’s. I was more musing about end of the year kind of moves.

Carr is definitely a better QB than Tanny, though i dont know if he is everything we would want, or could get from a draft pick. He would be a safer bet than a draft pick, though. I prefer drafting a guy as well, was more of a question not a suggestion, though i could see merit in it. Tanny is 13 mil in savings if cut next year, so next year he is cap savings by enough to put another guy in that spot and pay him decently.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It would be best fiscally and for the future to draft our own QB. Carr doesn’t represent enough of an upgrade over Tannehill, and he carries an even higher price tag. I just can’t see us even thinking about making that move. I do hope we move on from Tannehill next season though, unless he just plays great the rest of the season when he comes back

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Actually, Tannehill’s contract was backloaded, so it makes more sense to cut him next season. I can’t see paying him $26M, at least at this juncture.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We would take a big cap hit at over $13M releasing Tannehill next season. 2020 is the best case scenario with a cap hit of $5.5M. But I understand what you are saying about his $26M at this juncture and now the shoulder injury.

Nothing seems to be panning out for us the way it was projected.

    ——————————————-
The only way i would entertain bringing Tanny back would be at about a 7-8mil per year contract and id only do one of those years as fully guaranteed money. In recent history thats what a QB meant to be place holder as a starter has been paid. If he was up to re-negotiate his contract to be that, thats an admission by the team and by Tanny that we see him as a QB for our team during a transition to a new guy and i believe it would be acceptable.

I doubt his agent would go for this though, so i think more likely would be his exit from the team. Again, the Carr thing is just about adding a starter instead of suffering through transition to a new guy. I do agree with you id prefer just starting over, but sometimes thats an easier pill to swallow thinking you will have the tolerance for the potential year of suffering under the new guy than when you are actually suffering under it. People will need to be patient so you that decision to me scratches 2019 off as a rebuild year already.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – We’d be paying him $26M, so a $13M hit is half of that. If he’s not your guy, you don’t pay him the $26M. I would prefer they don’t think of him as our guy anymore.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see what the org thinks of him going forward. But how much money can we keep eating for players no longer on the team? We had roughly about $18M of dead cap I don’t feel like adding it all up for the exact number that counts against the cap. If we move on from some other players as well in the offseason we might be right back at that number again. That’s a lot of money paid for players not on the team.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If this shoulder injury is a problem, then the “injury prone” label will actually be real, but if he comes back, he’s going to have to play better than Osweiler, or we can just re-sign Osweiler at a much lower number than Tannehill to be the QB next year while we drafta QB

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A knee and a shoulder injury is not what I would call injury prone. To me injury prone is what Parker is. Constantly out of the lineup year after year every year. Now maybe it will become that for Tannehill who knows. I’m just talking about having all that dead cap that counts against the cap every year. $18M is a lot. It’s still too early to really make any of these decisions right now. I think we’ll know more after the bye. What’s our record, Tannehill’s status and if he plays and at what level.

Whatever we do in the offseason, we will need at least one QB who knows the system to help develop a rookie QB who at this moment is very unknown. Whatever Osweiler would get paid to be the stopgap you still have to add $13M to it even if he’s not getting it because it’s still on the books.

We’re in a shitty situation right now. We have 9 players on IR with two of them eligible to come back after 8 games and we’re only 7 games in.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And those two players eligible to come back are backups in Brendel and Hull.

  52. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This kinda BS is why this organization never gets ahead and takes that next step. It was a major f*ck up to stick with Tannehill. Starting over at the QB position sets you back years. We should have started that process years ago. Now, it will be several years, if we get lucky with drafting a QB, for us to be relevant. Spinning our wheels.

  53. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This organization chose to stick with Tannehill. I don’t have much faith that they will actually be able to make good decisions moving forward to rectify it.

  54. D's avatar D says:

Tim, 13mil cap savings is 13 mil cap savings, your rationale is to pay him 26 instead of pay him 13? He is worth more gone than on the team next year. Paying him 13mil would be overpaying, paying him 26 is insanity.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I already said to Mike I get the $26M. But larges amounts of dead cap is not a good thing no matter how you slice it.

I also don’t think one bad game and a horrific 4th quarter meltdown overrides the first 3 games where he had a passer rating over 120, over a 70% comp. pct. and 7 TD and 2 INT. We all know he’s the team’s major scapegoat even though the defense has played two lousy games and the OL took some major hits early on. Do we forget that we were playing 3 backup OL in that 4th quarter meltdown at Cincy?

Now Tannehill having this shoulder injury doesn’t help his cause, but it happened in that 4th quarter at Cincy. Sometimes you need to look at the whole picture, and not just one part of it. If Tannehill had been sub par all season I would be right there with some of you saying definitely time to move on. But that hasn’t been the case.

To me the bigger problem is nothing seems to go right for this team in a lot of phases. Wilson was becoming a huge weapon for us and boom down he goes for the year along with many others. It’s insane how this sort of thing keeps happening to us.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its not just one bad game Tim, he has a career of nothing.

      • D's avatar D says:

Those first 3 games weren’t great either man. Its not like he was lighting it up. You make too much of those first three games and you are downplaying the bad ones.

So you dont think out 22 games out of 39 in the past 3 years is constantly out of the lineup?

    • D's avatar D says:

he’s 13mil in savings and 13mil in dead money. When we are counting numbers for our cap, we count his full 26, so when we start the year next year, we are already accounting for the 26 but we could get 13 mil of that back to use in FA by cutting him, the 13 mil dead cap is gone no matter if you cut him or keep him, you just double it though keeping him. The only way he should be allowed to stay is if he takes a pay cut, and a significant one. Hell id have to say he would have to take at least a 13mil pay cut just to not make it more advantageous to cut him, she he should start there with

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you miss 3 games with a knee injury suffered at the end of a season and then the following season due to that same injury and we all know what happened, that’s 19 straight right there. Not in and out of the lineup. Come on man. You’re not being realistic about what I said.

I see where this discussion is going once again. I made my points and we’ll see how the org handles it moving forward. This will become a repetitive conversation that has already been said many times. I tried to look at it both ways even saying a rookie QB doesn’t necessarily set you back years in reply to Randy. But now it’s going to be question everything I say and I’m well aware of why. Many of you don’t like Tannehill to begin with. I get it.

  56. D's avatar D says:

Man i think that if i see Parker go off tonight its actually going to make me want to get rid of him more than i do now. If he can show up when it counts the most for him (ie when eyes are on him before the trade deadline) then thats going to be even more disappointing that we havent seen that much from him up to now. I dont see a way for him to win in this, if he doesnt help us he is what he is, and if he does then he has been holding back lol.

Its not like or dont like, its he isnt worth holding on to. You dont have to not like Tannehill to appreciate that we are overpaying for his production.

I think though its oyu not getting the point, missing from the lineup, therefore not contributing to the team is what it is. Parker not playing, or Tanny not playing, still isnt playing. So Tanny has aknee injury that ends his season, then he has an additional injury that causes him to miss the whole season, and then he has a shoulder injury to miss the last two in his first year back. You have a number of time he can get injured and then miss games before you label him the same thing that others get labeled for doing the same thing? I dont see a difference, i look at games missed with us paying his salary. I look at games missed where we didnt get anything productive out of him, whether he missed them in bulk or one here and one there, it ultimately doesnt matter.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep I don’t get it at all. We’ll see how the org handles the situation moving forward based on how the rest of the season plays out. If we move on from Tannehill I root for the next guy up. Not sure how many times I have to say that.

This team has more issues than just QB which we saw last week. I’m also concerned to see how that goes the rest of the season as well. Would really love to see a balanced spirited effort tonight for a road win and get to 5-3. It’s not going to be easy because Houston is starting to play better winning 4 in a row.

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well at least a lot of players listed on the injury report participated in full for practice yesterday. Scroll down for injury report that expands when clicked on.

  60. D's avatar D says:

I wonder if Emanuel Sanders wouldn’t be a guy to take a look at before trade deadline, especially if we can move Parker. 10mil this year, 12 mil next year is pricey, but maybe they could do something to extend him (since he should be looking to do that at age 31) and get those numbers down. If we are serious about fighting for playoffs this year, i think we need to see a move like that to get our WR group back up to full potency.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont like the idea of hoping that Caroo and/or Ford will help us fill the void. Wilson was a big loss and we would need a big replacement to get back what he gave us.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Grant needs to step up. He has the kind of speed to help fill Wilson’s void. We’ll see if he’s up to the task. All the TEs need to step up. Drake will likely see a larger role in the passing game as well.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see how our pass rush fares tonight being that Watson has been sacked a league leading 26 times. If we don’t provide at least a good amount of pressure and get a few sacks that’s going to be alarming. We’ve been letting QBs move around in the pocket and escape pressure too often. We need a good game in that area to win this one.

  62. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

would you rather have Carr or this guy?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not that high on Carr and he’s been showing signs of regressing. I wouldn’t give up high draft picks and pay him. I would look to the draft. Not sure about Justin Herbert at this time. If he’s as good as some say he’s likely going top of the draft and we don’t know where we’ll be drafting yet. As we all know it’s very expensive to move up even a few spots.

  63. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Carroll, imo, has not been the same since his back and leg injuries. Pass

What the hell is going on with Robert Quinn and Cameron wake? two sacks between them through 7 games?? They should have 10-14 combined by now!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Quinn is getting pressure from the edge but our DTs are not getting enough pressure up the middle and the QBs are stepping up or running on us. The same with Wake although he missed two games. Not saying either has been great but we’re not getting enough pressure as a unit overall. Everyone up front has to do a better job and the Texans have had trouble protecting Watson. That’s why I said earlier if we don’t get a good amount of pressure or a few sacks that will be alarming.

If you ever wondered what the term “the ball jumps out of his hand” meant, Herbert is the definition of it.
He’ll go really high, first likely, so depending on where we end up I’d make a move for him if we were in the top 15.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You better be right about him because let’s say we’re somewhere around 12-15 that will cost a boatload of picks and likely three 1st rounders the next 3 years.

The Redskins gave the Rams three 1st rd picks and a 2nd to move up from #6 to #2 to land RGIII.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

No doubt it would cost a lot. It’s way to early to try and even gauge where we’d be and who would be at the top of the draft. The Giants wouldn’t move out, not this time, but a couple of teams that’ll be there got theirs this year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Obviously meaning swapping 1st rd picks in 2019 and then two more additional 1st rd picks in 2020 and 2021 as well as other picks. I didn’t write it properly.

Also the way the Giants are going they’ll have a good chance at the top QBs in 2019 and they will take one this time around.

      • D's avatar D says:

He would definately cost us at least 2 1st, this years and next, and probably this years 2nd and next years too. It could wind up being 1st for three consecutive years, like you are saying. The problem is, the person sitting at 1 isn’t going to want to trade with us. If the G-Men are number 1, Hebert is going to them. If its Arizona, the G-Men will have more trade capital, or Arizona will just draft their guy. If its Oakland, they likely draft Hebert and trade Carr to someone for another 1st. They could get pass rush too at that spot or trade it to the G-Men for more picks.

I dont see us having 1 shot at Hebert if we aren’t i the top 3 picks.

  67. D's avatar D says:

If i knew i could get Hebert, i would rather draft Hebert than trade for Carr. My problem is i dont think we have any show what-so-ever for Hebert. He is likely the number 1 pick next year. I really like the Duke QB, he has a lot of really workable kills, id have him as my number two QB, even though most see Drew Lock as number 2 and Ryan Finley as number 3. If Jones slides under the radar until the draft we might would get a shot at him with our 1st.

Now would i prefer Carr or Jones, thats difficult. Long term, probably Jones, but if we want to get back to winning fast, Carr makes more sense because he is a vetted product.

  68. D's avatar D says:

Son, the only way we get a shot at Hebert is if we pick before the Giants because if they have a pick before us, they will either take him or out bid us for him. There is no chance we get Hebert.

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Raiders will also have the ammo to move on from Carr if they don’t end up in the spot to take the QB without a trade. At worst I think we go 6-10 if everything falls apart so we’ll be in that 9-11 range most likely. We’ll have no shot with the Giants and Raiders ahead of us if they keep going the way they’re going. Even if the Raiders keep Carr around, they can still take a QB with their top pick if they keep trending the way they’re going. They still have two more 1st rd picks and then two again in 2020. The trades they made with Mack and Cooper could be all about having a shot at a QB Gruden can groom from day one.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m still rooting for us to battle this season at 4-3 and that starts tonight. I’m not one for shutting it down and thinking draft.

The reason the Jets were able to go from #6 to #3 for a swap of 1st rd picks and three 2nd rd picks is because the Colts were not taking a QB and they were fine with a handful of prospects at #6 eventually taking Nelson to help protect Luck. That was a trade that suited both teams.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

      Nelson isn’t doing so hot.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most rookie OL don’t off the bat. The Colts also lack talent in a lot of areas. They’re not a good team. But it was a start for a QB you invested heavily in moving forward.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The defense has to bring it tonight after last weeks performance. If they don’t it will be very disappointing.

If we finish kind of middle of the road I see DT being the top pick for us. We could use more talent there even though I think what we have is solid. But that’s what it is right now, solid at best. It’s also a good year for DTs and you don’t have to worry about paying them big money if they pan out to be great for at least 4 years. I’m not sure what kind of QB will be in the middle of the road range. But maybe some solid prospects in the 2nd or 3rd.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

It really is too early for draft talk but I’ll say this, if we’re gonna take a QB in the second or third round we better have our starter in place if not why even bother. Get another DT at that point.

    What time is the game?

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER, like I said earlier, the Raiders have more chips than anyone to target anyone they want and definitely a QB. Not even counting trading Carr. I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him low just to get rid of his salary if they have a buyer. Maybe the Giants. Not this year, but in the offseason. The Giants may very well move on from Eli in the offseason. Carr could be an option for them. He’s younger and maybe a change of scenery revitalizes him. The Giants have skill players. They still need work on their OL though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Eli’s cap hit to release him in 2019 would be $6.2M. They can do that easy. I’m just speculating and having some fun. Let’s say the Raiders took a 2nd or 3rd rd pick for Carr just to take his salary. That deal would work because he would essentially replace what they already are paying Eli. That might also excite the Giants fanbase. Then they need to use as many resources as possible to continue to fix that OL.

    • D's avatar D says:

Lock might be available but right now i dont see him making it out of the top 10. One of the descriptions of him i have heard that seems pretty spot on is Jay Cutler ability, Eli Manning personality.

Daniel Jones from Duke is going to be a good pro. He is really football smart, his read progression and decision making are already really good. He doesnt have the arm that Lock has but he has a pretty good one. He also has been being coached by a QB from the pro’s in David Cutliffe so he already has pro type concepts he understand. He probably will be one of the more ready to go prospects.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I know you and some others watch more college football than I do. I can’t get into specific prospects at this time because we’re already seeing all the warts from this year’s QB class. I’m not overly impressed with any of the QB prospects. Sure any of them could develop and be very good, maybe even great some day. But I think they all look like what many said they were heading into the draft. None of them were special. Just the best of the 2018 draft pool. You see obvious flaws in all of them. Sometimes it takes time to really see what their ceiling is. Some guys jump out at you right away. So far to all of us Mahomes last year looks like the catch of the day. He’s doing what Marino did in 1984.

Wentz is the real deal. Goff I think is surrounded by a very good team. He doesn’t have to carry anything. Just do your job. He does that very well. Watson after the knee injury is trying to find his way back. When you look at the history of QBs specifically in recent years, this league is a tough road and unforgiving. It’s not easy. It sure as fuck isn’t college. LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we will wind up with 3-4 prospects like we did last year and the same sort of concepts of they probably can start but they would be better off with a year to cook. Hebert, Lock, Jones and Easton Stick will probably be the top guys if they all come out for the draft. Stidham, Thorson, Finley and Grier will probably be next tier up. I think Stidham has a lot of potential but i think he could bust too. Thorson is likely to give you exactly what you think he will, Finley too, but thats more game manager than a carry the team when he needs to guy. Grier has a lot of potetnial and he is athletic for RPO, he will need some refinement though.

Well David Carr was a backup to Eli for a few years. Houston was where Carr busted, not the Giants. That’s another reason I picked the Giants. David might still have some connections to influence the Giants about his brother. Also NFC vs. AFC. Eli will soon be 38 years old. It hasn’t been working for 1.5 seasons now.

Thinking about the Dolphins looking at Carr, no matter how you slice it, instead of paying Tannehill $26M, we’d still be on the books for over $35M with Carr and releasing Tannehill (dead cap). I do not think Carr is superior to Tannehill. You can debate maybe he’s a bit better, but not anything significant.
