2018 Season – Game 10 – Dolphins @ Packers

I was watching Good Morning Football this morning on NFLN, and after showing highlights of the Panthers vs Bucs (42-28), and Saints vs Rams (45-35), yeah, it looks pretty wrong seeing 13-6, Dolphins over Jets.  Kay Adams and Kyle Brandt presented it as a good ole 1990’s defensive struggle, a throwback.  They got it all wrong, this wasn’t a defensive struggle, it was an offensive struggle.  Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold didn’t get the memo that his team was wearing the white jerseys, because he threw better passes to the dark jerseys than he did to the white jerseys.  If you want to credit our pass rush, which actually existed yesterday, feel free to do so.  On our side, we couldn’t block (run or pass), we got one defensive TD and two FG’s.  Light it up!

I’m not singling anyone out here, but our O-line play was just terrible, and of course as per usghe, injuries were the reason for this.  Both tackles missed time in this game forcing Zach Sterup to man both the RT spot when James was hurt, and then slide over to the LT spot when James came back in and Laremy Tunsil got hurt.  So now Brock Osweiler, who I will say has better pocket awareness than Ryan Tannehill has ever had, has no pocket awareness because players were on him in 1 second or less.  Our O-line isn’t good with all our starters in there, but subtract one of our tackles, who are our 2 best OL, Tunsil #1, James #2, it really goes downhill.

I don’t want to knock the optimists here, because it’s wonderful that fans can still believe we’re in this, but I laugh inside  (a sad laugh) when fans say “Oh, not good, the Chargers won, gonna be tough to catch them”.  From what I have seen this year, we don’t belong on the same field as the Chargers, they score 28 PPG, and we’ve scored more just once this year, in OT, and never more in regulation.  We’ve had injuries, but we still have Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jakeem Grant, David Amendola, and Mike Gesicki.  We have Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake, a formidable 1-2 punch, yet our offense is putrid.  Yeah, we’re 5-4, easily the worst 5-4 team in the NFL.  We’re the only 5-4 team.

My guess is we’re probably going to have Brock Osweiler as QB one more time as we hit the BYE week, and then after the BYE, it will be Ryan Tannehill’s team once again.  We travel this week to Wisconsin to take on the Packers in their house.  This is an angry Pack team, having lost to the Patriots in Foxboro.  Anyone know who the OC is for GB?  Tee-hee, it’s Joe Philbin.  Not even kidding.  Possibly, this explains how the GB Packers are only scoring 24 PPG, just a few more than our Dolphins.  Hey, is it bad that Saints WR Michael Thomas accounted for more yardage and scoring by himself with 211 yards and 1 TD, while we accumulated as a team 203 yards and no TD’s?

It’s easy for Belichick to do whatever he wants, he’s beyond reproach at this point, no one questions the master.  How smart does he look using Cordarrelle Patterson as a RB?  Can we get some of that ingenuity from our offensive genius Adam Gase?  Don’t bet on it.    I wish he would read this and it would inspire him, but I won’t bet on that either!  I wish something would inspire him, maybe keeping his job, something like that.

I know Toba, Bookman and ER are attending the GB game, I hope they enjoy and I hope our team gives them a great game to watch and a Dolphins victory!  Enjoy fellas, way to represent!

ER – I have no problem in the least if Burke is gone, I’m not defending him at all. I also wish Gase didn’t seem like he turns a blind eye to the defense, and only cares about the offense, which is freaking putrid anyway. It was slightly less than putrid before the O-line injuries, but still, I see nothing there that makes me think we can’t do better.

We are hideous against the run, but that’s with Godchaux and a bunch of castoffs at DT, and 2 DE’s that historically are weak against the run, better pass rushers. Pair that with 2 rookie LB’s, I think that might explain some of the trouble against the run. We’ve been pretty good against the pass, especially considering we have no pass rush.
    ——————————————–
Out DT’s are pretty good, they just are more pass rush/gap penetrating types and not cloggers. M13 and i were talking about this a little while back. He was talking about Ngata, and he is right. To play the defense that we seem to want to play, they really need a 1 tech DT, this isnt a true 0 tech NT where you got a big fatty that requires a double head up on the OC, this a guy who has gap responsibility for A. We have 3tech guys, who can also play 5-tech. They are nice if used this way but they are not players that can pull off a 1-tech’s job. Phillips was the only tru 1-tech we had and losing him changed the whole dynamic of how we have to play the run. It puts more on the LB’s and we dont have the right LB’s to play that either. As much as Phillips was kinda a cancer and as much as we definitely needed him to be a team player, he was crucial for our run defense even if half the time he was probably freelancing.

    • ElephantRider says:

      They need a philosophy change.

      • D says:

The problem is we dont have an identity, we have a thing we are trying to be with a mix of players that fit a different one.

      • D says:

If i were them id do the 3 safety thing, switch to amore standard 4-3, utilizing the DT’s in 3 tech, bring TJ up and have him play like an additional LB, with Jones playing shallow middle and Minkah playing deep middle. Howard on an island, and Bobby with Minkha helping him over the top. Bring Alonzo back towards the middle to help McMillan and put TJ on the outside wide at the second level and Baker on the opposite side wide.

Didn’t we sign Sylvester Williams who is 6’2″ 328?

D – As far as I know, ALL of those agreements are in place if the person quits, but if the employer fires that person, pretty sure all of that goes out the window. If that weren’t case, the Browns would have blocked that from happening. It’s meant to protect the employer if someone decides to leave and open their shop. If you fire that person, the non-compete agreement no longer exists, because you just ripped up the agreement you had by firing them.
    ——————————————
Thats not how it works here, maybe with your business, but the way i have seen them drawn up they sit outside the employee hire. In fact in our state since its not a right to work, there are no employee hire contracts, unless they are legitimately contract positions.

    • Mike E. says:

There no such contracts in my particular profession. The MD’s probably have those here, but the OD’s don’t.

      • D says:

My business also develops software so we have a lot of intellectual property stuff and im directly involved with the development part of things so it could be just the nature of my position that requires the extra legalities. I also cant develop my own stuff or its immedately considered their intellectual property, even if i did it on my own time. If its related to this business it becomes theirs. I can make other things, but nothign related to healthcare.

      • Mike E. says:

Anyone else on their staff, including myself aren’t important enough to have a no compete clause. 🙂

  5. Mike E. says:

    D,

According to PFR, Williams has played NT, so I guess he could handle that, but like you said, he may not be ready yet to start and be that guy. Heplayed NT 2 seasons for DEN, and one for TEN.

  6. Just think about this. Gase takes a 6-10 team playing a last place schedule to a 10-6 record and playoffs his 1st season. But, he makes Foster the starter. If Foster never gets hurt Ajayi probably never plays & we go 7-9. Is 7-9, 6-10 & 5-5 impressive?

    • D says:

I dont think you can hypothetical out the 10-6, it wasnt an impressive 10-6, but we had that record. Stil the job he has done isnt impressive and its easy to see that. You can throw excuses at it all you want. At the end of the day the record is what it is and he hasnt shown us that he can elevate the team.

    • stangerx says:

Great point Lou! Without that 10-6 my guess is this would have been a show it hot year for Gase, which probably would have made what happened so much different. Alternative history is fun, but what happened did. Like going into the ultimate one of what if we signed or drafted Brees? Sorta guessing that Gase will have that hot seat year in 2019 though so long as we win at least 2 more games.

  7. ocalarob says:

for all of you selling out early we have a great shot to make the post season. we beat Tenn. we are one back of cinch and 2 back of ne with 6 left. we should have thill back also James tunsil and Larsen at the colts. and oh yeah. the schedule is fairly easy.

    • D says:

I see 2 easy 2 iffy and 2 hard. I think even under best of circumstances we split 3-3. Colts are playing really well recently, and we play them at their house. Jag’s we get at home and they are playing poorly, so i could see us losing to the Colts and beating the Jag’s but if that Jag’s defense waks us we could be in trouble there as well.

      • Mike E. says:

D – They also have Fournette healthy now, which is our achilles

      • D says:

Yeah the Jags to me is a toss up right now and im heavily leaning towards us losing to the Colts. I think we can sweep the Bills (though the one at their house to end the season kinda worries me) I dont think there is a chance in hell we beat the Pats or the Vikes. Pats i give us a glimmer of hope but we would have to play almost perfect.

  8. Mike E. says:

D – So what does your non-compete clause say? If they fire you, you can’t work within a certain distance from your current employer?

  9. sb7mvp says:

    You’re all fired.

  10. D says:

I could see how your business might be a regional thing, because your in direct competition for a specific area share of business.

    • D says:

As far as the records go, if you look at things froma statistical perspective. If we are 10-6 6-10 and finish 8-8, guess what that makes us. it doesnt make us the 6-10 and we just are devoid of talent, and we are in desperate need of a coaching change. It doesn’t mean we are a 10-6 quality team and the 6-10 was just a rough season, either. It means we are and 8-8 team, which is where this current season seems headed. This means we dont have the right talent or depth of talent to be considered anything but middle of the road, and it means we dont have a coach that helps us be anything but average, he isnt the worst we could have and he isnt the best. It also means we cant tolerate adversity, because we have towell to win against most teams, anything less and we probably lose and to win against the better teams we have to get a whole lot more out of the team than expected. We have a lot to clean up and we have to have a lot of people become something that, so far in their careers with us, they haven’t.

  11. ocalarob says:

we are 4-1 over the last 5 vs the pa rd at home both Indy and the jags suck along with buffalo. the tough game will be the vikes

You have to elaborate. Wouldn’t any other company in your field be considered a competitor? What are you supposed to do, change professions?
      ——————————————
There are business we are consider in direct competition with, that are in the same market we are, ie vying for the same size business we sell to. Our niche is medium sized hospitals and rural hospitals. I cant work for a company that develops medical software for rural to medium sized hospitals. I could take a job with a company that develops software for hospitals outside out target market. My specific team develops PACS software, so likely that would preclude me from working for other same level PACS developers. Other development jobs wouldnt be somthing i would be restricted from doing.

  12. stangerx says:

For me looking at this season starts with trenches on both sides decimated. A point to the OL could have been beefed up more in the draft and the FA’s old….. but that DL started with the whole “so deep we are gonna just keep rotating to keep them fresh” idea. Get the QB thing…. but for me starts there.

D & MIke E — can at least clear up that there ain’t no crying in baseball and no non-compete contract clauses in the NFL. Believe the only possible exception to that might be if you are still getting paid. But as D has said, common in some areas of private business.

  16. Mike E. says:

    D – Gotcha, makes sense.

  17. Tim Knight says:

Gesicki not being much of a factor is more about him than Gase. It’s up to the QBs to throw him the ball. He’s on the field running routes, it’s not up to Gase whether he gets the ball or not. If Gesicki was balling you’d see it. I agree with ER, he needed this season and the next offseason to improve his game.

  18. Mike E. says:

Most TE’s start out slow in their rookie year. I know O.J. Howard, who both D and I liked had only 26 receptions, but he managed to accumulate 436 yards and 6 TD’s. Gesicki will probably have a couple more catches, but much less yardage and TD’s. To me it’s disappointing he’s been a non factor in the red zone. They better work him hard so he can help us next season.

    • Mike E. says:

He’s basically on par with the rest of this years’ draft class, including Dallas Goedert and Hayden Hurst, who were drafted right around where he was. Hurst missed a bunch of games with an injury though.

      • stangerx says:

With throw in 2 seconds or less….. get why we aren’t seeing him bust the seam. So don’t put that on him. Like you, not sure why not being featured in the redzone plays. Had Derby doing a bunch of those against the Pack.

      • Tim Knight says:

Not all pass plays are 2 seconds or less. Gesicki has struggled getting open.

    • Tim Knight says:

Agreed. TEs have a lot more responsibilities than just catching the ball. He needs to learn all of it or he’s just a one trick pony and opponents will know that.

  19. Mike E. says:

What amuses me is when I check twitter, I see Osweiler getting ripped to shreds by the same people who would be making excuses about the O-line for Ryan Tannehill. I mean as far as I’m concerned, neither QB is good, or should be considered as our future, but I’m telling you people would defend Tannehill saying he had no time, defenders were in his face in a second.

    • Tim Knight says:

I blamed the OL for both. 😉

      • Mike E. says:

Obviously I didn’t mean you, because I don’t even think you’re on twitter, right?

      • Tim Knight says:

No I’m not on Twitter, just saying that I pointed out before the GB game when we were discussing the short passes that drive you nuts that we can’t block the deep drops. It doesn’t matter who the QB is.

  20. Mike E. says:

Stanger – It’s probably punishment because he hasn’t mastered blocking. Like Son said, he’ll learn blocking later, let the guy do what he does best, catch passes.

    • D says:

To me, he and the DT’s and a couple other guys are a round peg square hole argument.Play to the strengths and work on the weaknesses as you go. Stop this bullshit about it being your way all the time. Yes in a perfect world he would do both to perfection, but we are a country mile from perfect.

  21. pheloniusphish says:

ORob – I am not selling out early. I want to spend OD’s money.

  22. Tim Knight says:

So it sounds like Tannehill is targeting the Colts game to suit up again. I wonder if he starts, or dresses as the backup and if Osweiler is struggling, he comes into the game?

  23. ocalarob says:

If you really want to consider the over all tenure of gase up to this point, after 42 reg season games he is 21-21, he is 10-14 without his starting QB and 11-7 with his starting qb.

if you’re Ross after 2 and a half seasons on a 5 year contract there’s no way you pull the plug on him.

that would be a stupid move unless a guy becomes available that just blows your skirt up. maybe like a sean peyton, andy reid or bellichick.

you can bet the farm that Gase and Tannehill will be here next year and the last thing on their mind is drafting a QB

    • Tim Knight says:

You may be right, but we can still draft a QB. Andy Reid drafted Mahomes with Alex Smith still there then made the switch when he thought it was time. GB drafted Aaron Rodgers with Brett Favre still there and he sat for 3 years before they made the switch.

      • ocalarob says:

Gase seems to lien towards vets, he seems very comfortable with T Hill and OZ, depending on who’s out there at BPA it may happen however from what i hear this is a not too good QB class. so it really looks far fetched that they would take a QB especially with an early pick and the need for depth at other positions.

      • Tim Knight says:

It doesn’t have to be a 1st rd pick.

      • ocalarob says:

maybe Haskim or the WV QB, but these guys stocks will rise by the draft day due to a QB starved league. we need our early picks to shore up our depth.
I just don’t see Gase taking a QB, too many other issues

    • stangerx says:

That’s the thing. We will have all kinds of time to talk about it in the offseason, but one thing am sure of is Gase will be HC unless something goes incredibly bad. And no 6-10 does not count…. player revolt might do it though.

      • ocalarob says:

Players don’t revolt on Gases team, if they do they are gone!

      • stangerx says:

So what is your take on why Reshad is still here? Imagine if everyone went all Joey Porter on him after the final game on the plane home.

    • D says:

I get the thing with Gase, and i agree with it. I think he will be here, but he isnt making a strong argument for staying without huge changes. I dont agree with you on Tanny though. I think there is as much reason to move on as stay, literally 13million on either side. My belief is that this makes him expendable but i get how you see it the other way. I cant say confidently that you will be right or i will, we will just have to wait and see, but i definately dont see it as a forgone conclusion.

  24. ocalarob says:

The longer Gase has to develop this team the better they will get, if you keep making changes you’ll never have any continuity.
a new coach and QB will set this team back.

  25. D says:

If we dont draft a QB and take one early i will have to resign myself to more watching the games without having any hope for us. I just think that would be delaying the inevitable, which means we are just pushing the set back further back. Im OK with keeping Gase through the end of his contract, especially if he reboots the QB, to give him time to get his team together with his QB. If he doesn’t, them one more year is all i give him to turn it.

Gesicki plays every week. Not sure what you’re suggesting. Do you think they’re not getting him the ball on purpose? Maybe he only gets open occasionally.
    —————————————-
He puts him in scnarios where he is asked to block and a lot of times the plays fail because he fails. Also, on the flip of that, he doesnt seem to be calling plays that involve him in the passing game as much. He definately isnt the hot read on the plays because he is not looking at him as a primary many times. With the weakness we have at WR right now, thre should be more plays designed to get Gesicki ope as he is now one of our best receiving threats.

  27. Mike E. says:

Rob – Tannehill is 3-2 this season, forget the 11-7. We’ve played 10 games, he’s helped us win 3. He didn’t play all last season, and he’s played less than a third of the games this season. Not a reason in the world we need to keep him.

    • ocalarob says:

3-2 is a 66% winning percentage Mike which equals an 11-5 record over the span of a year.
the other guys get paid too.

      • Mike E. says:

My point is you don’t spend $26M on a guy who plays 3 games in 2 years, or even if he plays out the rest of the season, that’s still 9 games in 2 years. You can’t count on him with his injuries, and he’s not good enough anyway.

      • ocalarob says:

the 26 mil is a result of a multi year contract, if you do not think he’s in your future plans you would spend the 26 mil on him next year. if you do then you renegotiate a multi year deal with a signing bonus which IMO is more likely to happen.

Tannehill isn’t going anywhere for a long time to come,

      • stangerx says:

His actual cost v cap is $13 mil next year. That’s the benchmark on QB choices. Am sure Tanny might be open to a redo to lower the cap hit though.

  28. ocalarob says:

Gesicki is not a mature man as of yet, he will get a lot better with age

  29. ocalarob says:

Mike he had a freak injury, I don’t see Tannehill as injury prone, I think his knee was mis managed but he seems to be back to his old self as far as the knee goes, as for his throwing shoulder you can’t take any chances with that.
I hope to see him start the Indy game, he may have been good to go at GB but with the bye coming up i can understand holding him back.

    • Mike E. says:

I don’t think he was ready for GB, he said it hurt every time he threw the ball. He gets hit wrong on that shoulder, he may be done this season and next season

  30. stangerx says:

MIke E — don’t feel the need to keep Tanny necessarily, but we do need someone to play QB. Don’t see OZ or any rook we could get as that guy. Only way see is if we either blow it up and don’t care about wins or bring in some big money FA. Could for sure see drafting a QB and let Tanny run the O while the kid learns though. What would you like to see?

    • Mike E. says:

I just can’t see another season with him as the QB Stanger, I just can’t. I suppose if they drafted a QB early that they had full intentions of being the QB when ready, it would make it a little more tolerable. Otherwise it’s just more of the same, and I don’t know what fan wants to see that. We’ve been here all along, we’re not winning with Tannehill, we haven’t, and we won’t.

      • stangerx says:

Fair enough. I don’t really care that much other than having a reasonable plan in place with a view to the future, which would not include throwing a rook to the wolves unless going full blow up. GIven that one thing am sure of is that know dit about football talent, pretty much ready to go with what the board wants….. not that won’t stop me from talking along the way.

I blamed the OL for both.

    ****************************

I think we can probably blame both the OL and the QBs
They both help each other out – its not a one way street

In the case of the OL
    its just ravaged by injury
That may go hand in hand with the players we drafted/signed and so that’s on the FO as well

But the QBs when healthy are really not up to par if you ask me

  32. ocalarob says:

what do you think our record would be now if we didn’t have all these injuries and Tanny played the whole season? do you think we would have a better record?

That’s the real question you have to answer if you’re considering blowing this team up.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      No
I don’t think our record is any better

But I honestly don’t think that’s the only question

I think you ask yourself, in spite of these things have the FO and coaches performed well under those circumstances

and if the answer is “no” there is no reason to give them a scapegoat by point to another problem

      • ocalarob says:

2-3 without your starting QB and a team decimated with injuries aint bad

      • The Flying Pig says:

End of the day – we are all guessing what our record would be

There are factors to judge that have nothing to do with what is on the field or the results of games where players are injured

        – play calling

        – scheme

        – what do former players say about the lockeroom?

        – did the team hire unqualified coordinators ?

        – is the inactive list filled with heads scratchers from week to week?

        – is there a new player in the “dog house” whenever you read something about the team?

        – Have we ever shown the ability to score points consistently in the last 2 years ?

        – did our HC hire an assistant who got caught snorting coke before a meeting and professing love to a high end escort

There are a host of reasons beyond the last 5 games worth examining

I wouldnt see us being any better record, thats not the history we have with Tanny. See below, its not like we are on a whole different level with him at QB and thats why he doesnt deserve 26mil next year and why we can do just as well with someone who costs a whole lot less.

  33. D says:

Im not seeing 11-7, i see 7 from 2016 and 3 from this year, how are you getting 11? Are you counting the Cardinals game?

Either way the combined W-L record of the teams we beat in 2016 was 34-78 these weren’t good teams. Only one win was against a team with a winning record and i think they were as surprised to lose to us as we were to beat them lol.

This year the teams we beat with him at QB are a combined 9-19 and only 1 has a winning record and its 1 game over .500.

So its a perspective thing. His 11-7 is against teams with a combines 43-97 record, and against teams with such a poor record, we averaged wins of less than 7 point margin of victory.

    • ocalarob says:

didn’t he start the Cardinals game?

      • D says:

Didnt finish the game and we had a come back win with Moore.

      • D says:

NM we has a small lead up until Tanny went out. Such a long time back it was something i remembered different. It doesnt really change the numbers much adding that game in the mix, they had a losing record too.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah Moore almost lost the game. We were up 21-9 when Tannehill went down. We didn’t convert a 3rd down the first 3 drives with Moore as ARZ mounted their 4th quarter comeback. In no way did Moore win that game. The team survived it.

    • ocalarob says:

      all NFL teams are challenges,

  34. Tim Knight says:

As Rock pointed out and if he’s correct, Tannehill has already been paid the $13.4M in bonus money that’s why his dead cap is $13.4M. His salary with be $13.2M and his total cap is $26.6M. My guess is the team is going to view this very differently than many of the fans here.

  35. ocalarob says:

Tannehill and Gase have to have a whole season together to really evaluate how good this team can be.

    • D says:

They have been together a full season by now and its really not been that impressive. We beat teams we should have, teams that most other teams also beat, and we did it by a small margin on average and thats with Tanny.

  36. D says:

    —————————–
21-10, and how did moor e almost lose us the game? He threw no INT, didnt fumble. Defense let 14 points score and he did lead the drive that got us the lead back.

    • D says:

So i was actually right he did win us the game.

    • Tim Knight says:

Nope! 21-9 followed by three straight punts in the 4th quarter. Moore was 1-3 for 6 yards.

You want to give him that win go right ahead. I don’t view it that way at all. Our offense did nothing on 3 straight drives not converting one 1st down. Moore didn’t win it, we survived that game. If it was the other way around I’m pretty sure you’d be saying Tannehill almost blew it. LOL

  37. D says:

    Tim Knight says:
    November 13, 2018 at 2:41 pm

I know that, but I don’t think the team will view it like you do.
    ———————————————-
So a pure mathematical explanation, the team wont see it the same way. How?

    • Tim Knight says:

Because I don’t think they have the same view on Tannehill as you do. We’ll see in the offseason what happens. Right now it’s all speculation.

  38. D says:

Again, the Cardinals win doesn’t skew anything the number as the same whether you count the Cards game or not. Stop deflecting lol

  39. Mike E. says:

I feel that since Gase has tied himself to Tannehill, if we stick with tannehill next season, and don’t have a winning season, both Gase and Tannehill should be gone forever, never to be seen in Miami again! I guess they can live here, but no associations with the team. lol

    • Tim Knight says:

Mike, Gase will ultimately be judged on wins and losses regardless of who plays on the team.

      • Mike E. says:

Not exactly. If we drafted a rookie QB, and he started early enough in the season because he had more potential than the placeholder, whomever that would be, that would buy him some extra time. Hooking his wagon to Tannehill for another season, especially a losing season outs him at much higher risk of getting canned.

      • Tim Knight says:

That’s his decision. Head Coaches get hired and paid to make these decisions. If they fail they get fired.

      • D says:

He will be given leniency if he makes a change at QB. If he admits failure at the QB position and drafts to resolve it i promise you they give him extra time to make it right. They will at the very least let his contract run to fruition, if he stays with Tanny its going to be be seen as a hitch your wagon move and he likely doesnt make that 5th year.

  40. Tim Knight says:

D, that was also the game when Walt Aikens returned the blocked Xpt for a 2 point score to make it 23-15.

    • D says:

Tim, please look at the link.
      http://www.espn.com/nfl/game?gameId=400874556

it was 23-23, Moore led the offense down the field and we won on a FG. No i wouldnt say anything different if Tanny had done the same thing, but its just like a relief pitcher in baseball, Tanny had a lead, he didnt finish the game, the other team came back, Moore finished it for the Win. Why are you calling Moore the guy who almost lost it? Still as i said, this squabbling over that game just proves my point because your are overextending yourself to credit Tanny for a win, that doesnt even matter. The games we wont were against losing teams, look up there at the win loss record.

Tanny in his time with Gase has exactly 1 win against a team with a winning record, wait 2 if you count the Titans who are currently 5-4. Your AZ win doesnt help things, that was a 7-9 Arizona team, again, a losing record team and it was a 3 point win, which would lower the average margin of victory. They guy isnt special, he isnt a leader, he isnt anything that the FO swoons over. Its a business, and when it comes down to it, he isnt worth the 26mil we will pay him next year. I could see him worth the 13mil for sake of continuity and starting experience, but we can do better and we can get better for less than 13mil.

      • Tim Knight says:

I know exactly how the game went. I watched it and thought we were going to lose because Moore did nothing until the game was tied. Okay he had one drive to save us from an awful loss. Yeah if it wasn’t for him. LOL

We were beating ARZ all day until Tannehill went down. Let’s pretend that didn’t happen and it was all about Moore’s heroics on one drive after ARZ tied the game. He lead us to 3 points. A very important 3 points. But his play is also what lead to that tie game.

Tannehill played very well in that game. 15-20 195 yards 3 TD and 1 INT. If you remember is was a slopfest due to heavy rains. That was the game where Bruce Arians stated it seemed like every time we have the ball it poured and cleared up for Miami. LOL

  41. sb7mvp says:

The fact of the matter is that our offensive minded coach is barely able to use the entire offensive roster’s fire power effectively. He’s hand picked the QB backups, even though we already saw what would happen once Tannehill went down twice. We can only muster a few scoring drives a game and they mainly end up being FG’s. Our 3rd down conversion rate is terrible. The defense seems to be left on their own devices. We can never consistently put together a game from all three phases. Our offense hasn’t scored on an opening drive in like 20 games.
These are all specific things directly linked to coaching for the last 3 years that are being ignored. Instead, it’s the same general arguments used to defend Sparano and Philbin year in and year out. Ask yourself what’s more likely to happen – that the light bulb turns on for Gase all of the sudden or we continue on the same path? This team has a heck of a lot more talent and depth on it than the 10-6 playoff team and we had a ton of injuries that year as well.

    • D says:

I agree, i dont think Gase is getting it done, but i think with coaches and the level of change that comes with it, they will be unlikely to change at coach. Im only partially optimistic they will make a change at QB, though they probably should just get it over with and go full reboot and do both of them at once.

They have always seemed reluctant to just start completely over. They changed coaches but not GM, then they changed GM but not coach, then they changed GM no coach again, and then coach but no GM again.

Playing devils advocate though, Gase can say he just got the players he wants for his system. He can say that technically he is in year 1 of his offense. I just cant see Gase getting away with how obvious it isnt working without a sacrificing the QB by saying “if i just had my QB….” Again, this is what i see happening not what i feel should happen. Gase really hasn’t shown much to keep the spot and maybe the FO feels the same.

  42. mf13ss says:

The 49ers (2-7) this year, have a better point differential (-32) than we do (-57), at 5-5.

  43. mf13ss says:

    • stangerx says:

Don’t normally make predictions, but put this one down. Le’Veon Bell will be playing for the Jets next year. The fit is almost too perfect, including that they have like $100 mil in cap money coming up and a track record of putting up with head cases.

    • D says:

If he doesnt report he doesn’t accrue a year on his contract. He can just be re-tagged and it will be like he is being tagged for the second time not the 3rd.

      • stangerx says:

Him reporting and signing the tender is what has always made sense. But it is 4;00 — the deadline. And we lived through Ricky…. this one isn’t even as stupid a move.

  44. D says:

OK Tim, you win, tat counts as a Tanny win. The 3 point margin of victory is his too, and so is the win against a 7-9 team. Updated totals.

His 11-7 is against teams with a combines 50-106 record, and against teams with such a poor record, we averaged wins with a 6.5 point margin of victory. God that makes me almost change my mind about everything!

    • Tim Knight says:

I wasn’t discussing anything you said in your 2nd paragraph. ORob was bringing up those numbers. I was talking specifically about the ARZ game because that’s the one when Tannehill went down, the sloppy conditions that day and Arians’ comments about how the weather was always worse for his team lol. I remember that game well.

It was also the game when Tannehill threw this pass because the ball was wet and he lost his grip. LOL

  45. Tim Knight says:

Gase’s decisions will either turn into some success or failure and he will be evaluated on those decisions. That’s life as a HC. We’ll see how the rest of the season goes and then what he and management does in the offseason. Then we fans go with the flow from there. Not much more we can do. I really gave no hunch on what we’ll do at this time.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I pretty much have my mind made up about Gase

but as it turns out, no matter how you spell my name, my opinion is worthless on the decision for the team

I agree with your point though. This is just life for a NFL HC.
I tend to think Gase is doing things his way and if he is fired doing things his way – good for him
Its worse to do things others want and then get fired

      • D says:

I agree, you should go out on your own standards and merit and not change who you are just because someone says so. The problem is, if the way you are isnt successful, you will be spending a lot of time looking for new places where you can be you.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think Gase has been “bold” as a head coach and willing to butt heads and not please other people

      and I appreciate that

But the results are still on him

but I just don’t like the direction of the team right now

if we had the same record and we had a high scoring offense or a good defense
I would be a little more patient – but neither of those things exist
It feels like we are going nowhere

  47. Tim Knight says:

We should all predict the next 6 games are going to be horrible so if we’re right at least we saw it coming and that should soften the blow. If we’re wrong it will never feel so good being so wrong. 🙂

      Pats – L

        Bills – W
        Pats – L
        Vikes – L
        Jags – W
        Bills – W

I kind think it could go like Mikey says too, im kinda torn between 3-3 and 1-5. It probably would do us better ending 1-5 but because it would and we are a walking Murphy’s law, im going with 3-3 lol.

  48. Tim Knight says:

    I’m thinking a spot for a WR.

  49. mf13ss says:

I don’t want to hear that Gesicki is too raw and unpolished as a receiver… that’s just more excuse-making for Gase and his buddy QBs. Gesicki’s 8.88 Y/R is clearly indicative of the ball having to be out of the QB’s hands in under 2.x seconds.

So let’s not pretend that Gesicki has been thrown at with any kind of consistency after running 10-yards down the field (or anybody else, for that matter). Very frustrating that we always throw short of the 1st down marker.

D: I had heard over the weekend that that is NOT the case, .. not sure on details,or whether it changed since then .. but his agent found that somehow either way he is supposedly a F/A at years end…

    • D says:

Wierd i always heard they pretty much had to join for the last 6 or they would lose a year. It had to have been a loop hole or something because i even heard some of the football commentators saying he had to be back for the last 6 too.

  51. mf13ss says:

I don’t want to hear about injuries. Last year, the Eagles lost their starting QB, starting RB, starting LT, and had a bevy of injuries to their Defense. 2nd-year HC Doug Pederson led them to Super Bowl victory against the bloody Patsies*.

    ————
I hear ya, and I don’t disagree with ya on the point that he’s got to get stronger and tougher… and he will. However, that doesn’t dismiss his 6.29 YPT by our QBs. If anything, his 6.29 YPT are indicative that he’s coming open early when targeted, and without getting his route getting bumped off.

Think about it, man. I’m not trying to sell you via some magic trick.

    • mf13ss says:

Additionally, Gesicki’s 6.29 YPT are reflective of throwing it very short (dink-and-dunk), not allowing the receiver to get down the field before targeting him.

      • ElephantRider says:

Also have to remember he wasnt out there much before RT17 went down. Which is fine i’m sure he was far from ready. But now BO is horrible at anything over 10 ……

I still see him pushed around and if that’s the case it’s hard to trust him being in the right spot anywhere but running sideways

  54. CavalierKong says:

    Some thoughts:

-3 wins to 2 losses is not 66%

-The Bell situation isn’t cut and dried. The language in the CBA can be read two ways, and the franchise tag MAY count as a 3rd next year even without a year played. There have been a couple of articles written about this. It could turn into a big legal fight between team Bell and the league.

-With our offense there are no ‘easy’ games on the schedule.

-It’s crazy that a 2-7 team has a +25 better differential than us at 5-5.

-My own experience with no compete clauses is they are associated with a contract. If the contract is voided due to early termination, the no compete is either void, or there is a severance package associated with the termination as part of the contract to keep the no compete in effect. The upshot being the company can sue you for a return on their severance if you violate the terms of the no compete.

I’d expect it’s a rare no compete clause that allows a company to fire you AND keep you from gainful employment with a competitor, unless they’ve paid you not to (read severance).

    • mf13ss says:

ALWAYS good to see ya here, CavKong!

Thanks for asking Stang. I am south of the Campfire and am not directly affected, but I have number of friends who have been impacted. Luckily no one we know is among the missing.

I’m taking a break from the whole football thing. I found that I was pissed off more than not even during games we were winning, and I realized I needed to take a step back. I’m taking the rest of this year off and will reevaluate in the offseason. I am popping by here once in awhile just to say hi to you good peeps. 🙂

      • stangerx says:

    • Tim Knight says:

We haven’t scored an offensive TD in 9 quarters since the HOU game, Drake’s 28 yard TD catch from Amendola. Yikes!

    • CavalierKong says:

I would agree, although you derived a lot more out of that stat than I did. To me it just meant the Niners lose close game and when we lose, we lose the house, the barn, the livestock, and 3 out of 5 of the children (which is not 66%). 😉

  58. Randy says:

    D,
I’m not quite sure why the team would keep Gase next year IF they plan on starting over at QB. And by starting over I mean spending a first round….maybe a second….on a QB. Anything else isn’t really committing to starting over. Wouldn’t you want to bring in a new coach and let him have a say in what QB he’ll be starting with? Doing that with a lame duck coach who may not be around to develop him makes no sense.
    ***
You either trust that Gase is the guy going forward and you let him pick and develop his QB and build his offense around him for another few years, or you cut him loose and let a new coach start from scratch. I think Gase’s future here is much more closely tied to keeping Tanny than it is to drafting a new kid. Teams usually, not always, let the new coach pick his QB….not the guy who may be gone….unless they are gonna keep him no matter what. I could see them giving him another year with Tanny and use the injuries as excuses, but not if they are seriously going in another direction.

    • Tim Knight says:

It all comes down to how Ross feels about Gase. I still think even if he continues with Tannehill in 2019 we should draft a QB at some point and let that guy compete with Falk. Maybe Osweiler gets another chance to compete in camp but I don’t see Fales being in the picture next year. We haven’t been scoring much and they never pull Osweiler for Fales so I’m not sure how much confidence that have in him.

    • D says:

Its chicken and egg to me, if we get rid of the coach i think we for sure let him pick a new QB, if we decided to change our QB i dont think it necessarily means we cut out on Gase. They could give him one more shot with a new QB, and they might not. How i feel about the situation and what i am expecting to happen are two different things though. We fuck up most decisions liek this so who knows how we will do this time around

  62. ElephantRider says:

Gesicki a TE or WR? He going to ever block or what? I see guys under 200lbs roughing him up, but I guess that’s ok.

    • Tim Knight says:

He wasn’t considered a polished TE coming out of college so I’m not surprised he’s not where he needs to be yet. I think he’ll be a weapon in the future. He could really use that first NFL TD.

    • Mike E. says:

i never get to see an angle where they show him struggling to get off a defensive chuck. Did you notice it live at the game, or you can see it on TV? Maybe I’m just missing it?

    Doesn’t 1-5 make you happier than 3-3

Finishing in that 7-9 to 9-7 range is going to drive me crazy

    • Mike E. says:

Yes, yes it does. Fuck 7-9 or 8-8, we won’t make the playoffs, and if we did, we’d get embarrassed beyond belief. It makes me so angry finishing mediocre, we really suck, we don’t even deserve mediocrity!

  69. The Flying Pig says:

It would be so bad to draft in the first half of the draft

Trade down and try to pick up an extra
And come out of the first 3 rounds with 2 OL, a QB and a pass rusher

As far as QB goes I actually like the group as a hole
But I’m not selling out where I think it’s first round or bust
We may be able to get one in the 2nd round with or even though 3rd that’s just as good as what we would take mid first round

I also don’t think it’s crazy to take QBs early in 2019 and 2020
And let those guys compete to be our franchise QB

But that’s way down the line

  70. Mike E. says:

Stanger – When you say Cav Kong is family, are you implying that we are descended from apes?

    6-0
    Colts – W
    Bills – W
    Pats – W
    Vikes – W
    Jags – W
    Bills – W

Games can’t be lost until they are played. Bitches.

Come to think of it, the Bears game was the last game I enjoyed, and I had to walk out of the room a couple of times in that one too. I took no joy in the last win over the Jets, I was too pissed at our offense to enjoy that

Bears game was one of the best have seen in couple years….. and yeah it had me real worried at times (wow that Drake fumbler at the 1). But guess for a game like that have to put up with those moments.

I’ve seen it on TV. Little dudes pushing Gesicki around. I’m not down on him because I think we all know deep down he was going to need some seasoning. I think he’ll be much improved next year with an offseason.

And what I noticed most at the game last week was WRs running wide open that were never seen. Before it got silly and the sack fest started there were several plays with our guys running wide open.

“Christopher Greyshock, 57, from West Milford, New Jersey, was arrested after rear-ending a car and injuring two people on Sunday. Greyshock was “staggering and swaying,” nearly falling into traffic and unable to stand up straight. Greyshock also had liquid stains on his pants and officers could smell liquor on his breath, so they administered a field sobriety test. Unsurprisingly, Greyshock failed. After he failed the test, he gave the officers his reason for being so drunk. “I drank too much because the Jets suck!””

I saw that earlier. Didn’t realize he was from West Milford. That’s not a quick ride from the stadium. I know people who lived there and still live there. That’s the sticks, with bears etc. He took a real risk and I hope the people who were injured are not hurt too badly. Not easy to get around in those parts without a license.
