2018 Season – Game 15 – Jaguars @ Dolphins

2 more games to go, but now the Dolphins will just play these games with no pressure, no worry, because the playoffs have slipped away. I’m not even angry, I think the team mustered what they could with a depleted lineup, and there was no crushing, disappointing loss to an inferior team at the end like losing to the Bills or the Jets with the playoffs right in our grasp. This season we traveled to Minnesota to play the Vikings, and while the Vikings aren’t a juggernaut, they were at least healthier than we were. I thought we had a shot if we had CB Xavien Howard healthy, but he was unable to play, which made me doubt our chances. Rightfully so.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was forced into much more corner duty than usual due to the Howard injury, and although he had a pick 6, he’s still learning and is definitely taking his lumps too. The Vikes have 2 excellent receivers in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, and both schooled him during the game. Nothing wrong with that, Minkah really didn’t play a lot at CB at Bama, and he’s played sparingly on the boundary here in MIA. Expecting him to cover either of those guys all day is a lot to ask.

Now that RB Frank Gore is done for the season, the Dolphins can take a better look at Kalen Ballage, and maybe Kenyan Drake will get more touches too. I still feel like Drake is underused, and has been all season. I think it’s also possible that our Pro Bowl corner, Xavien Howard might be done, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer will get their chance to make some hay, or on the negative side, make it obvious we need to draft more CB’s.

Although we will probably end up either .500, or below .500, I’m at peace with it. Too many injuries, and just not enough talent to make up for it. I still think we should make QB a priority next season. It doesn’t mean we have to take one with our 1st pick, but if the right guy is there, go get him. There are a number of needs, obviously the O-line is a need, but we can’t draft 2 OG’s and an OC all in one draft. We’re going to have to once again acquire more O-line in FA, and we have a huge decision with Ja’Wuan James. I’d prefer to sign James. James has missed time every other year, and if the pattern continues, it will happen next year, but I don’t want to lose him. I don’t believe in the pattern, and I also don’t think you should let your good players that you draft go.

We need defense next year. Crazy to think that young 6th RD draft pick Vincent Taylor was our best DT. When he was injured, things really went south, but the late FA pick ups starting coming around (Ziggy Hood, Sylvester Williams), but neither are signed through next year. That leaves us thin and in need on the D-line, with Godchaux, Spence and Taylor. We also scooped up DT Kendrick Norton from the Panthers PS, so he will get a look in the next 2 games as well. Norton is a big run stuffing DT, but doesn’t offer a lot as far as pass rush abilities. Still, watching the Dolphins get gashed all season by opposing teams run games, sounds like Norton is just what the doctor ordered, although temper that somewhat, as Norton was a 7th RD pick still on someones practice squad.

We have some tough decisions on DE. I love Cam Wake, but he needs to simply be a role player, not a starting DE at this point of his career. He would probably more effective as a pass rusher in a part time role at his age. Robert Quinn is due nearly $13M. No way is he worth that, but dammit, we have no depth there, and Charles Harris is still freaking M.I.A. I could see Quinn gone, and maybe they just throw Harris in as the starter on one side and draft another DE early for the other side. Wake in part time duty, and possibly a re-sign of William Hayes.

I’m happy to be not angry at our team for a change, but I think changes are coming. Gase has earned another year at a minimum, and although Ryan Tannehill did his best, and he will most likely be back next season, his replacement must be found. He’s a gamer, and a warrior, but he’s not special. Find special. The best NFL teams have Special, and the others keep looking for it. We need to identify and find Special, or our team never will be. Whether it’s Herbert, Lock, Haskins, Grier or Finley, find him. We don’t have to take a QB in the 1st RD, maybe Special is in the 2nd or 3rd RD, it’s possible. Try and find it.

In the next 2 games, I want to see Kendrick Norton, Kalen Ballage, Kenyan Drake, Brice Butler, Isaiah Ford, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer. Heck, let’s take a look at David Fales too, why not? How about with 2 games left, put Charles Harris in as the starter. Just do it, see if the kid shows a little something, prime him for next season. I’m not angry with the team, but Harris and his lack of production/playing time makes me angry. Get him in there!

yes, but they are not CONTROLLED by the QB so they should not be attributed to them alone.
    ________________________________________
if you want to look at it your way then all stats would be “team stats”,

when a RB carries the ball he gets help from his blockers, or maybe he doesn’t shouldn’t his yards gained or lost be a “team stat”?

how about sacks or lack of, when a DE get’s to the QB most of the time the qb has no where to go with the ball due to good coverage. shouldn’t that be a “team stat”.

if you look at pro reference stats they have stats for both QBR and passer rating, and they don’t attribute rankings to teams only players.

    total defense…total offense…Are team stats

ORob you like the straight ahead power running game, you should be wanting those big fat road graters,
    ____________________________________________

I want a consistent running game like we had in 2016,

and what a coincidence….we also made the playoffs!

i don’t think you get that with 350lbs overweight lineman.

Rashad Jones won’t be here next year either. The writing is on the wall, he dared to question the great Adam (very balding) Gase. Say good bye to another of one of our best players. Corner will be a priority as Minkah will move full time to Safety. I thought Minkah and X were a good CB combo.

Great job as always Mikey. Thank you.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think he will be, cutting him would take a 23 mil hit against the cap, not sure at his numbers trading him is an option either. he’s guranteed 33 mil

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Sonny! – Rob is probably right about Reshad, he’s due $17M next season, $12M dead cap hit. Gase is going to have to suck it up, because it costs too much to cut him.

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

this Offense is not proficient at what they do, when they break the huddle they are late getting to the line most of the time, hiking the ball with 1 second on the play clock barely getting the play off. they have no surprise about them. in fact the defense has the element of surprise because when you get down to a second left on the play clock they know you have to snap the ball. so essentially they know the snap count.

when an offense comes to the line they already know the play but the defense doesn’t, when a qb sits back surveys the field and calls out protection the defense adjust to the formation of the offense.

what if the offense who already knows what the play is broke huddle ran to the line and snapped the ball in a rehearsed and coordinated manner, they would catch the defense out of position just about every time.

see New England or the Rams for reference

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i highly doubt we will be pursuing any long term high priced FAs this year, any FAs signed will probably be 1 year deals, i think this team is building for the future thru the draft and disregarding any top shelf FAs

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree – unless it’s a young pass rusher, like Frank Clark. I don’t see any need to get a top shelf FA, we’re not that close. Draft a QB, get him in some time next year, see what ya got, and if the kid is special, maybe go for it the following year.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe Trey Flowers, which would serve 2 things, getting us a young pass rusher, and subtracting talent from the Patriots.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Orob
If what you’re saying is accurate, then why keep Tannehill as you’ve said they will?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think they have a target year of 2020, draft his replacement this year, at that point you could dump Tannehill without getting hit cap wise in 2020. or they may think tanny is the answer and renegotiate.
i really think tanny is missing something as far as an above avg qb goes, he has the tools it seems to be between his ears. but he has had a good record with gase.
      just speculating though.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i said i think they will keep Tannehill in 2019, and the reason for this is because i don’t think you could replace him for 13 mil, he also knows gases offense and by what gase is telling the media he seems to like tanny as his starter.

the real key here is if they renegotiate tannys contract in march to save on the 26 mil cap hit, imo that would mean they are behind tanny and have no plans to pursue a QB in the draft with an early pick. on the other hand if they just let Tanny play out his contract without renegotiating that would speak volumes to drafting a QB with the early pick and knowing they don’t think Tanny is in their future after next year. at any rate i believe Tanny will be the starter in 2019.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To me that makes no sense Rob. You’re contradicting yourself. On the one hand you’re saying we shouldn’t sign any big free agents next season (which I agree with), but then you’re saying we’ll renegotiate Tannehill’s contract for next season to free up cap room . Why would we do that? Just leave it be if they think Tannehill is suitable for next season, while the young QB we draft learns, and then cut Tannehill in 2020 when his dead cap hit is $5.6M.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just a quick segway to baseball. Just got an itch to post a potential Mets lineup. Sorry haters! lol

    1. RF – Brandon Nimmo
    2. 3B – Jeff McNeil
    3. 2B – Robinson Cano
    4. 1B – Peter Alonso
    5. LF – Michael Conforto
    6. C – Wilson Ramos
    7. CF – Juan Lagares
    8. SS – Amed Rosario

I don’t want to see Todd Frazier or Dominic Smith out there on a regular basis, or maybe at all. I like Todd Frazier as a person, but I can’t have that kind of lack of production in the lineup like last year, he was a freaking anchor dragging that lineup down. He was awful. I want McNeil in there as often as possible, and I wouldn’t mind if they experiment with Cano at 3B too, with McNeil playing 2B. I’m getting the feeling we’re not pursuing A.J. Pollock anymore, but if we do, it could make it even more interesting. What really sucks is that MLB time accrued garbage will probably keep Alonso off the roster until at least June. Fuck that, get that guy in there! Who wants to see Dom Smith?

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Our D-Line truly is a paper tiger, and coming in at $38.6M this year, we have the 5th most expensive D-Line in the NFL.

    Truly unacceptable.

Gore has been placed on IR. Sorry if someone else already said that

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Our O-Line comes in at $18.4M this year: the 26th most expensive O-Line in the NFL.

Face it… we’re not paying enough attention to our O-Line.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That doesn’t tell the story at all M. If we had drafted 2 stud OL, it would be even less, right? Injuries killed us. That said, expect at least 2 OL draftees, and one solid FA

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Couple this with our lack of production on the O-Line (see my 12:20 PM post). It’s kind of a ‘ya get what ya pay for’ statement, that’s all.

If we were more productive on the O-Line in having addressed it via the Draft last year, it wouldn’t be a problem what so ever.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wake is a FA next season, I hope he’d like to finish with the Dolphins at a reasonable price with a part time role, but that has yet to be determined. He may want to play for a real contender

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    M

We have no idea what our O-line could have been with a healthy Josh Sitton and Dan Kilgore. We did replace Pouncey, who everyone here was sick of. It sucks man, every year we seem to lose OL to injury, and not just a couple of games, but more and not just one player, but a few. Young stud OL get injured too.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And here’s some salt added to the wound: Mike Pouncey made the Pro-Bowl this year, starting all 14 games thus far with 2 more to go.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was willing to take that chance. Pouncey gets in on name recognition more than production IMO, but he did prove durable enough to play the entire season, while our guy didn’t, so there’s that. You know if Pouncey was here, he’d be out with a hip injury after 3 games max. lol

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

TOO right, man! Pouncey would have broken both of his hips, blown out both of his knees, and gotten a concussion, to boot, had he remained here! LOL

        Our luck SUCKS!!!

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If I were a betting man (which I’m not), I think I would have wagered $1M that Pouncey would go down for the Chargers, and very early in the season.

Something is WRONG in Miami. I believe in luck (good or bad) to a very limited degree, but that Pouncey is 100% for the Chargers is almost TELLING that something is wrong in Miami.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Dan Kilgore… he had just signed a contract extension with the 49ers during the offseason, and they traded him to us. WHEN DOES THAT EVER HAPPEN??? It’s almost as if they knew something happened to him after signing that contract extension.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
SF liked the young guy they had to replace Kilgore. Richburg is why they probably felt they could move on from Kilgore.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I understand all of that, Bro. But do you not find it odd that they had so much confidence in Kilgore, so as to extend him to begin with? It’s just really weird, man… they should have waited before extended him.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So Gore joins Kilgore on I/R…

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write, Mike. I feel the same way you do about basically everything. There will be changes in the offseason because there always are and it has to happen. I just hope we can stay relatively healthy some year and roll with the roster that was designed. Many people didn’t think we were even a .500 team heading into 2018 and we’re .500 now with all the injuries. We have some good talent to work with but we do need a jolt of something special at a few positions.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So now pro-football-reference.com also includes QB Hits as part of their stats. Good for them, that’s pretty cool. Not cool for Charles Harris. WTF Charles? I mean WTF! Last year, 12 QB Hits, 2 sacks.

This year, ZERO sacks, 3 QB Hits

Maybe they should include a stat within 10 yards of the QB, I wonder if he’d freaking show up on that one!

To me that makes no sense Rob. You’re contradicting yourself. On the one hand you’re saying we shouldn’t sign any big free agents next season (which I agree with), but then you’re saying we’ll renegotiate Tannehill’s contract for next season to free up cap room
    ________________________________

First of all it’s all speculation, I don’t know what they will do in the future. i laid out two scenarios with Tanny that makes sense to me, that’s not contradicting myself.

#1 if Gase feels he’s not the answer down the road you let him play out his contract and draft a rookie to take his place in 2020. you won’t save any money replacing him with a stop gap and if you do the savings will be minimal

#2 If Gase feels he’s the man, which that’s exactly what he’s saying you dont take a 26 mil hit on the cap and have to deal with him next off season as a FA. you renegotiate his contract to save cap room to allow you to resign players like Gore and Hayes and whomever else we need to 1 year deals.

so in March if they don’t redo tannys deal that to me is the writing on the wall and you can expect a move in the Draft to get their new QB.

The reason i say we wont sign any top shelf FAs is because that’s what i read.
I believe that’s why they didn’t pay Landry and dumped Suh and Pouncey.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I thought you were saying we’re not going to sign any big FA, but we were going to renegotiate Tannehill’s contract to save cap money next year, I didn’t get that. I have to tell you, I will be very disappointed if they do anything with Tannehill other than keeping him for ’19, drafting a QB early enough to be a legitimate competition for him. If Tannehill fends off the rookie and is healthy, see what he can do, and if he gets hurt or falters, and the rookie is ready to go, then put in the rookie. If Tannehill plays well all season, he’s still under contract for 2020, so there’s no need to anything with him unless they decided to cut him outright, which is unlikely.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt his contract would go thru the 2020 season, with only 5 mil in dead money he would count 25 mil against the cap.
they would either redo his deal or dump him.

    _____________________________________________
I don’t think there will be any significant changes next year, just get our injured players back healthy and add depth.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What do you consider significant? Would drafting a QB early be significant? Would not signing Cam Wake be significant? Would cutting Robert Quinn be significant?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

they may try to renegotiate quinn and wake however they can both be dumped without a hit, i think replacing quinn or wake may be significant, can they do that and replace them?

I doubt a rookie would play in Gases offense right out of the gate so i don’t think drafting a QB would be significant

  23. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

keeping him at his current salary will hit the cap at 26mil, if you redo his deal you probably save 17 mil in cap space if i’m not mistaking.

Yes, Newsome is retired… but sometimes $$$ can change minds is the idea. I wouldn’t be against trying to get Newsome in Miami, as he could override some of the boneheaded decisions that Gase has made in terms of personnel decisions (both hiring and firing). I’d actually be 100% for it.

Tannenbaum has control over all personnel decisions too, no? And when Parcells was in town, he had an acting GM in Jeff Ireland as well.

Newsome was most assuredly want a GM as well. Problem is… would he want to pick ‘HIS’ own GM? Grier might be out the door if Newsome doesn’t believe in him.

I hear ya, I don’t mean to shred it or anything. As far as the hierarchy between Tannenbaum and Grier, I always thought it was kind of strange. once upon a time when we acquired Shula, he was young and we just flat out stole him from the colts

Even if you’re being sarcastic (as Tim noted, and you gave him a smile), SOMETHING has to change. We can’t keep going .500, as we have over the last 1/4 of a century (as noted by Armando… and it’s TRUE).

I can remember as a trivia question, back in the late 90s, this: the Miami Dolphins are the most winning team franchise in professional sports history. What has happened to us?

Somehow, someway, and over time… we’ve become the laughing stock of the NFL. We’ve become the punchline of late-night jokes. The FBI/CIA have probably had more contact with our franchise than any other in recent years. Former players of ours excel with other teams, after they sucked for us. Former studs from other teams suck for us when we bring them in via FA. And it goes on and on…

Freak injuries, O-Line decimation year after year, another player making national headlines for all the wrong reasons, embattled coaches year in and year out, more penalties than ever before Don Shula (we were a classic team with the least penalties in NFL history), unprecedented in-fighting in recent years, and now with perennial purges (whether it be with coaches, players, or otherwise) unseen before.

SERIOUSLY, WTF is going on in Davie, Florida? I can’t be the ONLY ONE who has noticed this trend over the last 25 years… and Armando is on it.

I’m truly embarrassed to be affiliated with this franchise anymore. When I go to work, I’m always hearing, “there’s always next year, M13… there’s always next year”, as they LOL.

Time for a change, being .500 ball doesn’t net anyone a high draft pick, nor the playoffs.

Mike E., I do like a few of the early round QB’s. It’s just the “First Pick” draft game. I always go to the best available list and there is always a better player available the QB available. My last 2 drafts I ended up D players first 2 rounds cause the QB’s I would take were already gone. Then, come round 3, I know we need OL. Next thing I know I’m in round 5 with no QB so just figured I would take one that we could try to develop with Falk.

I did kind of like how that draft panned out. They have Raekwon Davis listed as DE/DT but he is 6’6″ 316 and very athletic. Also, OT Prince Tega Wanogho is 6’7″ 307 and is very athletic; projected to run around a 4.7 40 at his size.

The other thing that concerns me about “forcing” a guy to take the job by paying him a ridiculous amount of money is you get a Parcells type effort. He didn’t really want to be here, but he took it because Ross threw silly money at him
    __________________________________
i think you have that backwards, the reason he left was because Ross wouldn’t pay him. he full filled his contract obligation when Wayne sold to Ross, he waited a year for Ross to renegotiate. Ross told him they would sit down and discuss it but that never happened.

Parcells was working for free, so he left.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

absolutely false! He was NOT working for free. he was working for what he agreed to work for and had an out due to the sale of the team. He was contractually allowed to walk, but he was getting paid and getting paid a shit ton of money.

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – we’re talking about 2 different things. You’re talking about when the douche slithered out of town. I’m talking about when the lazy disinterested sloth assembled the team of Ireland, Sparano, Dan Henning and Paul Pasqualoni.

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The parcells hire by pinapple face was a ginormous mistake that set this franchise back a decade. I screamed it from the mountain tops at the time. Parcells was not a personnel guy he was a mediocre coach who’s success was all years ago (two stops on his coaching resume ago) he was a dinosaur that time had passed by and he should NEVER have been given full control of a franchise.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Douche got his money, anything to the contrary is a canard, a prevarication, a lie.

Parcells even admits to taking the job in Miami despite uncertainty about Huizenga selling the team to Ross, who completed the purchase of the franchise for $1.1 billion in January of 2009.

Parcells’ deal with Miami was finalized when Huizenga offered to include an opt out clause that allowed him to keep all of his four-year, $16 million contract if Huizenga was no longer the majority owner.

Ross agreed to make the contract an open-ended opt-out clause, which allowed him to leave at any time with his full salary. Ross openly admitted he “walked on eggshells around Parcells,” fearing he’d run the powerful NFL figure off.

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I agree with those of you who think Parcells was a truly bad hire. If I’m not mistaken (I could be wrong), Parcells was the very first person to be hired as a ‘czar’… to oversee football operations due to the owner not knowing a lick about football (in this case, HWH).

It was a brand new concept, to have a ‘czar’ as the intermediate between a ‘football clueless’ owner and the HC/GM. The only problem? Parcells was not the right guy for the job.

I will always appreciate HWH (RIP) for taking my advice of a ‘czar’ (I know a few still do NOT believe me, whatever… I’m owning a FAILED IDEA here, for crying out loud!), but he chose POORLY in Parcells.

Bottom line is he sucked as a czar and should never have been hired.

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    ORob,

There’s no questioning Parcells’ coaching prowess… only he wasn’t the HC when he came to Miami, he was the ‘czar’. He fired Cam Cam and went on to hire a little-known O-Line coach named Tony Sparano (RIP) as our HC. Then — and being Sparano didn’t have ANY kind of clout — he brought in throwback coaches Dan “Mr. Magoo” Henning to be OC, and Dan Pasq to be DC.

Had it not been for David Lee (QB coach, who brought the WILDCAT from his days in Arkansas), our season would have been a total disaster in 2008.

The greater point is this: the ‘czar’ must be proficient in player personnel in terms of team building. Parcells was never proficient in drafting personnel… rather, he brought the best out of anyone who did the drafting (GMs) for him. What’s more, the game had already passed Parcells by what with the myriad of rule changes that Goodell installed.

I’m not here to throw Parcells under the bus, rather pointing out that he had assembled a very poor team. And let’s remember, we only won the AFC East crown in 2008 because Tom Lady* was taken out in week 1 by now folk hero, Bernard Pollard. 🙂
