2018 Season – Game 15 – Jaguars @ Dolphins

2 more games to go, but now the Dolphins will just play these games with no pressure, no worry, because the playoffs have slipped away. I’m not even angry, I think the team mustered what they could with a depleted lineup, and there was no crushing, disappointing loss to an inferior team at the end like losing to the Bills or the Jets with the playoffs right in our grasp. This season we traveled to Minnesota to play the Vikings, and while the Vikings aren’t a juggernaut, they were at least healthier than we were. I thought we had a shot if we had CB Xavien Howard healthy, but he was unable to play, which made me doubt our chances. Rightfully so.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was forced into much more corner duty than usual due to the Howard injury, and although he had a pick 6, he’s still learning and is definitely taking his lumps too. The Vikes have 2 excellent receivers in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, and both schooled him during the game. Nothing wrong with that, Minkah really didn’t play a lot at CB at Bama, and he’s played sparingly on the boundary here in MIA. Expecting him to cover either of those guys all day is a lot to ask.

Now that RB Frank Gore is done for the season, the Dolphins can take a better look at Kalen Ballage, and maybe Kenyan Drake will get more touches too. I still feel like Drake is underused, and has been all season. I think it’s also possible that our Pro Bowl corner, Xavien Howard might be done, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer will get their chance to make some hay, or on the negative side, make it obvious we need to draft more CB’s.

Although we will probably end up either .500, or below .500, I’m at peace with it. Too many injuries, and just not enough talent to make up for it. I still think we should make QB a priority next season. It doesn’t mean we have to take one with our 1st pick, but if the right guy is there, go get him. There are a number of needs, obviously the O-line is a need, but we can’t draft 2 OG’s and an OC all in one draft. We’re going to have to once again acquire more O-line in FA, and we have a huge decision with Ja’Wuan James. I’d prefer to sign James. James has missed time every other year, and if the pattern continues, it will happen next year, but I don’t want to lose him. I don’t believe in the pattern, and I also don’t think you should let your good players that you draft go.

We need defense next year. Crazy to think that young 6th RD draft pick Vincent Taylor was our best DT. When he was injured, things really went south, but the late FA pick ups starting coming around (Ziggy Hood, Sylvester Williams), but neither are signed through next year. That leaves us thin and in need on the D-line, with Godchaux, Spence and Taylor. We also scooped up DT Kendrick Norton from the Panthers PS, so he will get a look in the next 2 games as well. Norton is a big run stuffing DT, but doesn’t offer a lot as far as pass rush abilities. Still, watching the Dolphins get gashed all season by opposing teams run games, sounds like Norton is just what the doctor ordered, although temper that somewhat, as Norton was a 7th RD pick still on someones practice squad.

We have some tough decisions on DE. I love Cam Wake, but he needs to simply be a role player, not a starting DE at this point of his career. He would probably more effective as a pass rusher in a part time role at his age. Robert Quinn is due nearly $13M. No way is he worth that, but dammit, we have no depth there, and Charles Harris is still freaking M.I.A. I could see Quinn gone, and maybe they just throw Harris in as the starter on one side and draft another DE early for the other side. Wake in part time duty, and possibly a re-sign of William Hayes.

I’m happy to be not angry at our team for a change, but I think changes are coming. Gase has earned another year at a minimum, and although Ryan Tannehill did his best, and he will most likely be back next season, his replacement must be found. He’s a gamer, and a warrior, but he’s not special. Find special. The best NFL teams have Special, and the others keep looking for it. We need to identify and find Special, or our team never will be. Whether it’s Herbert, Lock, Haskins, Grier or Finley, find him. We don’t have to take a QB in the 1st RD, maybe Special is in the 2nd or 3rd RD, it’s possible. Try and find it.

In the next 2 games, I want to see Kendrick Norton, Kalen Ballage, Kenyan Drake, Brice Butler, Isaiah Ford, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer. Heck, let’s take a look at David Fales too, why not? How about with 2 games left, put Charles Harris in as the starter. Just do it, see if the kid shows a little something, prime him for next season. I’m not angry with the team, but Harris and his lack of production/playing time makes me angry. Get him in there!

Toba, we do have the 3rd and 4th playoff teams who lost play for a prize. The teams that were eliminated have to release I/R players. 6 teams make the playoffs, the top two seeds get a bye.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rock, Parcells was a great HC, not mediocre. Lead three teams to the SB won two, lead the Jets to the AFC Championship game and made Dallas relevant again. I’m not talking about his role with us, just as a HC.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He was definitely a great HC. He obviously had little patience and probably a 1/4 of the drive to be a GM or Head of Operations. Problem is, he was more than happy to take those jobs, and the money that came with it. I can’t respect that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t view it the same way, his job was to turn a 1-15 team around and put people in place to carry on. Just because those guys didn’t get it to another level didn’t make him bad. When Ross became majority owner he started seeing a disconnect in management and HC. He has never talked to Ireland since he went behind Sparano’s back during the Harbaugh fiasco.

I posted this before, I was eating lunch in Jupiter FLA with my wife and inlaws back in 2009 or 2010 before the draft and we saw Parcells leaving the restaurant and my F-I-L said hello coach and he waved. I was like whoa, there he is. He had a huge bag of documents with him. Most likely going over draft stuff as it was in April.

If you asked people in the NFL about him you’d get a very different view about him then what gets said here. The guy is revered by many, especially coaches and players.

    Absolutely undeniable, man… agreed.

  4. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Parcells…as mentioned early….was LAZY building the franchise. It sucked and he ran. Just like Satan!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not true. Perception is not reality. He wasn’t perfect and admitted his mistakes in Miami, but it was not all about him. He left during the transition of Ross the new owner, Ireland getting cocky as GM and Sparano being the fall guy. Huizenga hired him and gave him his deal which was not suppose to be long-term, just get the team back on track. Parcells didn’t like what was going on in 2010 and took advantage of his out in his contract. He basically said okay Ireland it’s your team.

What’s funny is Ireland was bashed in Miami by everyone yet has been given credit for recent Saints drafts even though he’s not the GM. Perception is not reality, it’s what someone tries to make it. Gossip!

Since we are talking about great coaches. like Parcells. Gase doesn’t have great coaches and he definitely hires guys he knows. That includes some terrible players the last few years. I wonder how well his teams would have performed if he hadn’t taken the lazy route with Burke the past two years?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

People hire people they know in everyday life all the time. Why is football different?

Again… what did you think this team would do out if training camp? Does 7-7 at this time really blow your mind?

We were predicted to be one of the worst teams in the league. 7-7 is not that. Just saying!🤪

Big baseball trade involving the Dodgers and Reds. Puig and Kemp to Cincy plus some other guy for some guy and a few prospects.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh, ok, so the guy that Parcells hand picks to run the team (Ireland) gets too cocky, things aren’t going as well as expected, so he opts out, but that’s not lazy? It was 100% all about him, that’s what comes with being in charge of EVERYTHING. Who else would you like to blame, Omar?

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Parcells basically did the same thing to the Jets. Tried to turn them around, but when things got ugly, he left them high and dry. He had a handshake agreement with TB Bucs owner Hugh Culverhouse to be the Bucs HC in 1992, then at the last minute, changed his mind and totally screwed the Bucs. The man has has no scruples, no honor, no drive, no follow through. He’s a quitter, who left 4 teams in a lurch. I have no respect for him. He was a great HC, but a lousy man to rely on in any other capacity.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – Dodgers are shedding salary to make room for Harper. Worked well for the Reds though, gives them a little sizzle and pop. Good for them.

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

People have ripped Spielman around here for years to and he’s had some very successful drafts up in Minnesota and built a dominant defense. Things change. Sometimes it’s not the right fit.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Or maybe people learn from their mistakes . . .

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

HOW RIGHT YOU ARE,RANDY! However, Spielman’s failures seem minor when compared to Ireland’s catastrophic selections. And, frankly, I DON’T CARE how much success/failure Ireland has at OTHER FRANCHISES. Perhaps, Spielman and Ireland have benefited from superior owners and/or superior scouting departments at other franchises. As a sidelight, is anyone on this board thrilled with the output from our scouting department?? Yes, there have been some spectacular successes (Like Landry and Ajayi). But I do think our scouting staff has basically failed when it comes to the task of finding solid players in both the O-Line and the D-Line. In their defense, I’d have to say that management’s (T-BOMB) decision to not draft ANY O-Linemen in the last TWO drafts, –that turd Asiata doesn’t count– may be the biggest issue of all.

THUS, I strongly support the firing of T-BOMB as soon as possible. THEN, his replacement would be charged with upgrading our scouting department and, if necessary,
finding a replacement for Chris Grier.
      ——————————-
But let’s NOT kid ourselves. By far, the number one problem facing this franchise is Steve Ross’s penchant for picking THE WRONG PEOPLE TO RUN HIS FRANCHISE!! – – MY inkling is THIS! IF OZZIE NEWSOME INSISTS on staying retired, Ross should at least pay him a fee to suggest 2 or 3 names Ross should consider to replace the failed in New York and failed in Miami Tannenbaum. That, I HOPE, will get us headed in the proper direction!

Mike E, does that trade begin to make the Reds relevant again?

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Son, I think it is a step in the right direction depending on which Puig they get. Don’t know what happened to Homer Bailey but he was flat out turrable last year. Wood is an easy upgrade over Bailey if he goes back to starting lineup. I don’t know how much Kemp has left in the tank and don’t know much about the others in the trade.

It will just be a good season if the Cards finished in last place for once. Cards=Pats as a thorn in my side for about the same amount of years. Fuckers! LOL

Without a doubt, it’s the best Star Wars fan-film ever created. The budget was astronomical for a mere 15 minutes (and this is but Part 1 of what should be 4 or more parts), the special effects are ‘A-grade’, and it was filmed on ‘A-grade’ cameras.

It takes place 8 months after the events of “Revenge of the Sith (Episode III)”… Vader is still trying to reconcile the death of his love Padmé Amidala. Of course, we remember that Vader was told by Emperor Palpatine that he (Vader) accidentally killed her in his anger.

    CHECK IT OUT!!!

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I’m not saying Parcells is a perfect guy, just that there is more to the story than him just bailing. He didn’t leave the Jets out of nowhere, he stayed on in management and Belichick was suppose to be HC and then he ran to NE in the middle of the night. I don’t think we ever know the whole story about any of this stuff.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

More than anything what this team needs is some good fortune and not have the team ripped up by injuries. There are quite a few young players learning their way and then when you lose quite a few key guys, it’s not easy to have a great season. I’m surprised we’re 7-7 even though we pulled some games out of our asses. But that’s football.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tim, I don’t believe in said “fortune” or luck. Once in awhile, alright… yeah, I can believe in good/bad luck. But when something becomes a generational problem (in our case, O-Line players dropping like flies), it has nothing to do with bad luck… it’s a bloody trend.

Me too… I’m surprised we’re still in this mofo at 7-7 (impressive!!! 🙂 ), but good or bad luck is a once in a while thing… not a constant trend. JMO

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know what else to call it. I would have liked to see the team that was built be that team without basically every position getting hit with injuries and a different lineup every week. We have a lot of young players learning their way so I new we’d have some growing pains, but the team was stripped of quite a bit of talent. We lost the chemistry battle.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m 100% with ya, Bro. It really SUCKS knowing what could have been had we stayed healthy throughout. Something has to change though… whether it be the water, the conditioning, the training, the prospects we import, or whatever else it might be.

Something is clearly not right in Miami… as has been the case for a long time now.

Agreed. I, too, don’t know what’s going on, but I think most of us can agree that *something* is going on in Miami. And I’m not trying to insinuate nefarious matters whatsoever… just that something is WRONG.

It might be even as simple as some of our starters aren’t truly accustomed to the heat and humidity of Miami at 1:00 PM, week in and week out, starting from TC. I dunno, man.

I’m going to do some homework on this during the offseason.

Adversity happens every year. Hoping it won’t is pointless. Stuff like injuries are just part of the game. Good teams find a way to overcome adversity. We just wilt…again and again. I’m tired of the excuses. They’re too easy. Find a way to win. Overcome shit for a change. Nobody cares if you get bad breaks. They’ll kick your ass anyway. i believe we need pitt to lose and indy to lose to stay in the race, the Titans win hurt us, not sure who would win a 3 way tie between indy…tenn and miami??

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Randy,
i believe we will find a way, winning should be inevitable due to parity unlike baseball.
Ross doesn’t even play into the success or lack of, it’s the FO/coaching.

we just have to get the right front office and coaching staff to get the players in and coached correctly.

unfortunately this process takes time in most cases to realize if your current staff has that winning mojo.

after Shula, and oh BTW..Shula wasn’t getting it done later in his career, we had JJ, he made a run then quit, Wanstadt had some success but was ran out of town, then there’s Saban..Cam..then the parcells mafia, they also had a little success. then philbin and now Gase.

i’m not sold as of yet that Gase is not that guy that gets us over the hump,

i believe we are headed in the right direction, we are not signing long term top shelf FA’s anymore and are building thru the draft, i like the FA’s that gase has brought in like amendola, wilson, gore, he seems to want speed.

Gase’s biggest fault is his play calling IMO but even that doesn’t matter yet, we still need to get more talent via the draft and the cap right with our massive dead money due to the likes of Suh.

  29. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

when you back-up the brinks truck for the likes of suh and the other top shelf FAs that we have brought in over the recent years you get a player who thinks he’s above the coaching staff because his money is guaranteed so it makes coaching and getting that player to do what best serves the team difficult.
on the other hand when you get a rookie or even a short term FA they are more coachable because future money is at stake.
    suh was a freelancer.

if we do end up in a 3way tie with Indy and Tenn i believe we may win that tie due to having a better conference record than both of those teams

Randy, pretty much every team that gets hit with injuries like we have had are struggling, not just us.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, ironically enough with Gurley a game time decision and Lamar Miller ruled out I might go with Jaylen Samuels today in FF Championship weekend.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think I laid out the pattern for Parcells pretty clearly. He was selfish later in his career. He took on challenges to keep himself occupied, or maybe he really wanted the challenge, but when they went south, he quit and moved on to the next one, w/o any regard for the team he left in a poor situation. Hey, if you want to let him off the hook for that, that’s your prerogative, it just irks me man. All he was thinking about was himself, not the ramifications of him not following through for the teams that he worked for.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Obviously, this isn’t going to change your mind about him, I just have to spew some venom on him because he deserves it. Just because he “could” opt out of his contract doesn’t make it right that he did, especially the way he did. He knew it was wrong, that’s why he snuck out.

  34. we supposedly didn’t want to spend money on healthy guys like Landry, who has never missed a game in 5 years, when we can have cheap non durable players out for the season like Wilson , or head cases like Phillips instead of paying Suh.

You get what You pay for, want cheap players? They are cheap players.

But Cheap doesn’t win championships, if Fins want to challenge for the super bowl hey have to draft top talent, develop and keep them on roster, and pay the man.

Any cheap substitutes, will look like what they are, cheap substitutes

  35. NFL is business first, sport last. It’s all about being cheap while franchise values increase.

Someday soon Ross can sell the team for a very tidy profit, why use some of the profit for quality players?
Cheap players means more profit for Ross,

margins are mandatory, wins are not, they are nice, but not required for profit

  36. For anyone not liking Suhs contract, how well did Phillips do in his place?
If Suh wasn’t the answer, bring the answer in, Phillips sure as hell wasnt it.
So on top of being cheap, we toss in a super healthy dose of mismanagement to complete the roster with cheap guys that can’t do a damn thing for the team.
Suh and Landry were probowlers, and we replaced them with cheap guys that can’t do anything at all to help. It is what it is, but we won’t win many games doing this, and it’s a contributing factor in our struggles to get first downs, run defense, and win loss record.

  37. We all have watched Miami for decades, We know what the problem is, FO mismanagement

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
That’s my point. It’s notjust us. Every team has to deal with different forms of adversity every season. We never seem to be able to overcome any of ours.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

RANDY: Miami does NOT have to deal with different forms of adversity every season.
TO THE CONTRARY, Miami has to deal with the SAME cause of adversity every season. To wit, problems caused by the foolish appointment of proven losers by one Steve Ross.

  40. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Mike E., you brought up a good point about Joey Votto. If he stays healthy, he could have a huge year. He is up there in age now like Kemp and had an off year last year but, with his talent and given some protection like you said, he could put up big #’s like he did in 2017.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Should have a decent hitting lineup 2,3,4,5 if they go Scooter Gennett, Votto, Puig, Kemp. IMO. Also, if José Peraza improves on his #’s from last year, it will be even better. Again, depending on which Puig we get.

  41. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I know we have talked about scheduling conspiracies before favoring the Pats. I still believe there is a conspiracy to this day. I mean, why do they get to finish the season with 2 home games against division rivals when teams are battling for a playoff spot. Every year, there seems to be something about their schedule that favors the Pats. Always, SMH

I don’t have numbers to determine his net profit, but it seems reasonable there would be a healthy net too.
It was a wise investment imo, just took some seriously deep pockets to get into it, He should sell and retire

  46. Ross could hit the sell button, and buy a ridiculously large yacht and have silicone enhanced naked babes peeling him grapes, lol

Randy, the injuries continue for us, no X and no McDonald today. Other than LB we have had injuries and losses at all other positions. It’s crazy. I think at 7-7 we have hung in there. What did you think our record would be at full strength?

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Before injuries, after our 1st win, I thought we could go 11-5, TBH. If we win out, we will only be 2 wins away from that which is crazy with all the injuries we have had. To think if we didn’t have our second half melt downs against Cincy and Indy and win out, we would hit that mark. SMH I know, I’m not Randy.

      • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Hit that mark even with all the injuries.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The meltdowns get equaled out by the OAK, CHI and NE wins. We could have lost all three of those but won them late. But that’s football. I see a lot of folks talking about this team as if they’re at full strength and shit the bed. So major changes have to be made. I don’t think that’s fair. Do we need some upgrades and to play better? Yes! But come on, we have a different lineup in all three phases every week. This team never got the chance to build chemistry throughout the season. The mood here is like everyone screwed up and we’re 4-10. With two games to go we’re still in the hunt for the playoffs. LOL

Always, SMH
    _____________________________________________________
i don’t think that is accurate,
the NFL likes to have division games at the end of the season as they may have the most importance.

we play the exact same schedule as the Pats except for 2 games, we had to play @ cincy and the raiders at home to where they had to plat @ pitt and kc @ home so they definitely had the tougher schedule.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

They also had Vikes and GB at home and we didn’t. I really wasn’t pointing to strength of schedule (this season) but rather how they end the season against 2 division rivals at home.
To me, it is something different with the schedule every year that seems to make things better for them whether it’s where the bye week is or whatever, it just seems to be something.
Come on man, don’t ruin my conspiracy. I know it’s true, just like I know there are aliens living among us. LOL

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My favorite was the pass to Amendola, that was a very nice throw. Does that shovel pass to Bolden count as a TD? JKJBB

We need another CB and definitely a DE in the draft.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Anyone notice Charles Harris on that TD? He just stood there, and he was unblocked, and didn’t step toward Fournette until he was 2 yards into the endzone. He’s driving me crazy.

  66. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

WTF Harris! You got to plug that hole. Instead you watch him run into the endzone then put your hands on your head and say “oh damn”.

  67. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think Stills lost that ball in the sun

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

so we get the Minnesota with Dalvin Cook at full strength and the Jax with Fournette at full strength.

    Wyoming,
Yeah, that Tanny….he’s so good. Great pass to Stills on third down. Missed him by about 3 yards. I can’t wait to see him suck again next year. 🙂

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

predictable offense results in forced throw away
followed by no points off turnover due to high snap from a great snapper

    Tim,
That was a T/E twist where…which takes time. Tanny had plenty of time to throw. He just doesn’t seem to be as mobile as he was. And, he’s gotta stop sliding on that brace, or he might really twist that knee.
