2018 Season – Game 16 – Dolphins @ Bills

So the 2018 NFL season will be coming to and end next week, and as per usghe, Dolphins will watch other teams in the playoffs. Also as per usghe, we will not be picking top 10. We’re not even good at that! Sometimes if you’re bad, it’s better to be baaaad. Get that top 5 pick, or even #1 pick, and then parlay that into more picks, and really change the roster. No, we’ll pick somewhere in the middle, maybe 15 or 16, or maybe even 18 or so when we beat Buffalo when it doesn’t count next week.

Let’s take a step back. I’m not mad that we lost yesterday, our playoff chances were slim going in, but for a while there, the Colts were losing, so our opportunity was there, but we couldn’t take care of business. It seems like whenever the stakes are high, and the playoffs are on the line, we manage to show our worst. Ryan Tannehill is a big part of that. He’s not, I repeat, NOT the guy that will lift your team. I watch a lot of games around the NFL, and the best QB’s take chances. They don’t always work out, but guys like Brees, Roethlisberger, Wilson etc. when the game is on the line, throw a 30 yard pass on 2nd and 8. They throw a 30 yard pass on 3rd and 10, in fact, they always look to get the ball downfield for a big play. That’s the last place Tannehill looks. He’s a warrior, but he’s gutless in his decision making. He’s not a guy that wants to get the kill, he’s a workaday bee. He’s more than happy to just do his job, but he’s not wired to kill.

There are rumblings for a big front office shakeup in Miami. If so, that would probably signal the end for Mike Tannenbaum ( Executive VP of Football Operations) and Chris Grier (GM). Which direction we would go from this I don’t know, but I’d hope we find a guy with experience that can build the team from the ground up. No quick fix plan, but build the team in the image of what he feels is successful, and sustainable in the current and future state of the NFL. Identify a HC, and mutually agree with that HC on the coordinators, and then build the team. If it takes 2 or 3 years, fine. Don’t cut corners to try and win now, no foolish FA spending. If we take our lumps for a year or two, so be it. Just build it right. The best teams do, and repeatedly are contenders.

If we don’t fire any executives and and don’t bring a new FO, I’d hope that Adam Gase is truly on the hot seat. I can’t be sure he’s not the one, but it’s becoming clearer to me that he might not be. For all of his offensive knowledge and potential, our offense is in the bottom 5. It’s understood we lost players to injury, yet there are players on the roster that are here that I feel are underused. Kenyan Drake had 10 total touches Sunday. He’s you’re home run hitter, the big playmaker. C’mon, it’s not like he’s Tavon Austin and we’re afraid he can’t touch the ball too many times, Drake is 6’1 212. Frank Gore is out for the season, and Drake gets 10 total touches. What’s the problem? Where’s the disconnect?

Forget about the defense, Gase has no part of that, and it’s obvious, because Matt Burke still has a job. Oh BTW, our defense is also in the bottom 5. Yeah, we lost some personnel there too, but it’s more than that, a lot more than that. We don’t make adjustments on either side of the ball, just keep going with what we’ve got. What we got ain’t working all too often, so . . . At the very least, if Gase is still here next season, he has to do 2 things. Fire both coordinators, find a legit OC who can call the plays so Gase doesn’t have to sit on the bench during the damn game doodling by himself. Find a legit DC who has been proven elsewhere, and will straighten out and identify our issues, and fix them. That might even be enough to save his job for the future.

I think we MUST draft a QB next season, and not just pick one in RD 5-7 to say we took a QB. It’s possible the best QB for us might be in RD 5, but then I want that guy competing to start from the get-go, and not sitting on the bench because Gase loves Ryan Tannehill. If Tannehill is still here next season, his reign is over. He is on notice, and any real competitors should have a fair shot to unseat him. If somehow he comes out on top, as soon as he falters, the next man up if ready should be given his shot. We’ve seen this show far too many times, It always ends the same. Ryan Tannehill has never played in a playoff game, and he probably never will. Nuff said!

I wish I had a brighter outlook for all of you, I think we all could use a little Dolphins cheer, but we’re going to have to wait and see how things shake out.

Happy Holidays to all of you!

Enjoy!

Tannehill throws a missle, but throwing a missle is sometimes hard to hit your target, he has a lack of touch on deep throws. Haskims seems to have that touch.

his awareness in the pocket is pathetic, Haskims seems to move well in the pocket.

if i’m replacing Tannehill that would be my target.
    —————————————————————
He also tries to throw to the reciver and not to where the receiver will be. He has good zip on his passes and it allows his throws to be on target some of the time, but those throws that require anticipation of where the receiver will be, he usually is off target on. I think that is one of the core passing skills he is weakest at. He has a live arm, its really able to do most the passes, his problem is between the ears.

I think the same can be how it is for his pocket awareness and his reading of routes. He cannot determine if a receiver will likely be open on a play and when to move on and come back to something that might be opening up. He either stares down the first read and/or wait endlessly for it to get open, or he never goes back to something that wound up getting wide open after he looked away from the play. He never gets to check down, and i mean never, its almost like it doesn’t even exist in the play but yet they are always sitting right there wide open in front of him as he takes another sack.

He’s hella athletic, he has a good arm, he is tough (though i do think he gets rattled because we see him really go downhill in games when he gets frustrated), he is a good dude, he had a good character, he just isnt a good QB. He doesnt have the mental aspects to make him one.

Falk couldn’t beat out Gabbert. There’s better out there.
    ———————————————-
Dont think he was given a chance to beat out Gabbert. They needed a vet backup, and they only carried two QB’s. Still im not saying Falk as our only carry over, i expect us to grab a vet FA and a QB or two in the draft.

When Tannenbaum was hired in 2015, he did then hire a new GM in Grier even though from within and then Gase in 2016. So that was sort of a total rebuild. VP hires GM and HC simultaneously.

TBaum was here the year before but just wasnt in the VP of operations capacity, i do remember him already being here though, when Hickey was.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was a consultant in 2014 and then VP in 2015. He was behind signing Suh in 2015.

So all the reports I’ve seen is that he’s the one that is being fired but Gase remains. I wonder who replaces him?

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If we are bad next season, we would be a bigger draw for a HC and/or TO folks because we will have a high pick and looking to draft a young QB

  5. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hate blogging from my phone, it sucks!

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So what is behind Tannenbaum being fired if not all of them?

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim, what about Kenyan Drake, he’s here?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s been dealing with a shoulder injury for weeks and they lessened his role. That’s why Ballage is getting more carries than Drake since Gore went down. Drake is lining up at WR a lot, but they don’t want him throwing his shoulder into the mosh too much. He can still make a big play at anytime with less touches.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim, I definitely think they should all be fired

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If Drake’s shoulder is bad, put him on IR. If he can play, get him the damn ball. He was under utilized all year. Excuses, excuses.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay I don’t want to argue about it. I’m more interested in where we’re headed.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not trying to argue, just pointing out that it’s not just the injuries, he doesn’t use what he has. Gesicki too, although I know that’s because Gesicki sucks. Maybe that’s why Tannenbaum is getting axed. lol

Some talking heads argue that Gase has done a good job with what he’s had…

    ****

I tend to think Tannebbaum (who I think should be fired too) did a better job than Gaze and could not disagree more with these talking heads

This dolphins team is more talented anthem a lot of other teams we have seen in recent years

And there is no way I accept being near the bottom of the league defensively and offensively is a “decent job”. – it’s just not

But I guess reasonable minds can disagree about that

But even assuming those talking heads are right
Why is this an argument at all?

In a 3 year span, it’s pretty much industry standard that a team should be on its way to be a contender

This argument, “given what he had” is just setting the bar way too low

The standard should be are we a contender?
Are we close to be a contender

If those aren’t your goals – then what’s he point?

And I think most reasonable minds will agree that both are negative

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Without looking, what was the most carries Drake had all season? Total rushes and receptions all season?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      In any game

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I think its 16 or 17 touches. That should be his norm, except you got to feed Gore. So that limits his rushes and WR was supposed to be a group that needed touches as well. But this offense never ran enough plays to get anyone touches…..

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim
Someone said that Gase wanted Lamar Jackson, but Tannenbaum wouldn’t draft him. Could be that, especially since he’s having success. I think the reason he’s succeeding is because he’s playing for a very good HC who will play to the players strengths.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh okay but I don’t think the way Jackson is playing with all the running is a good thing. He’s built like a WR and won’t last. He also needs a lot of work as a passer. I do think he’s dynamic and can get better but not sold yet.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Since you’re not playing along, Drake has been used pretty similarly all season, the most combined touches, rushing and receptions was 17, twice, Game 1 and Game 6, then after that, no more than 14 touches a game, and many 10 or less. No reason for him to be used so little.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER’s answer, we’re not a good TOP high play count offense. Scoreboard also played a role.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s definitely true, but who’s a guy that can make a big play at any time? Drake??? Why not get him the ball? If you’re down 14 points or more in the 3rd quarter, why would Gore be in the game?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure, I thought Drake would have more touches.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – If they sign Gore next season, I might stop watching. Between him and Tannehill, I don’t think I can tolerate that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We could sign Gore in a limited role because I think Ballage will get more touches anyway. Why are you down on Gore, he played well? He’s not making big money.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I love Gore, let him play somewhere else. If he’s taking carries away from our young backs, I want no part of that. If we want use him as a 3rd or 4th string back, and he’d be willing to accept that, fine.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure if he’ll be back or not but I hear ya.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – Why do you think Drake should have so few touches?

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Last year against NE Drake had 30 touches, 25 rushes 114 yards, 5 receptions 79 yards

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think of Drake like Alvin Kamara. Kamara almost had twice as many touches. Should be that much of a disparity.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I’ll drop this, too much focus on one thing. 😛

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I thought the same thing and that’s also why I traded my 1st rd pick in FF to protect him. I won anyway but besides his 9 TDs he didn’t have the production I expected and I think I only started him once.

He was. I feel like Gase is saving him for something, but for what? Is he afraid he can’t handle the work? I wish I knew.

He can’t figure out how to use the players/talent he has. I was trying to point this out the other day. He is LOST. I think overall we are a better team than our record suggests but we have a bad coach and he is stubborn to boot. Bad combination.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Could be. I don’t completely understand how little we used both Drake and Gesicki. Dallas Goedert had Zack Ertz in front of him and was used a lot more than Gesicki. Why???

  20. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike E,

I’ll focus with you. Christian McCaffrey is 6 pound lighter, shorter and not a bit more explosive and has 311 total touches this year but somehow Gase can’t find a way to use Drake. The guy is almost incompetent. We have two rookie TEs…misused. Gase doesn’t trust rookies and he’s unwilling to invest in training them to excel if it may impact his conservative coaching style. . How do I know? I’ve watched his coaching for three years.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Agree with Herd

Seems to me Gase has a real problem figuring out how to use his talent

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

      Oink to you! 🐷

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree with Herd too. We have some talent similar to what KC puts on the field but might have lower totals on offense than the 1-15 squad. KC plays a rookie undrafted RG too. It just blows my mind how poorly we seem to teach these players where to be, how to block, what their responsibilities are. I’ve seen at least a half dozen times where a WR was wide open for a pass. Where an OL or Te completely whiffs on a block. Where a WR is in the wrong place or even Tannehill throws to the wrong place. This isn’t happening on good teams.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Wasn’t Gase supposed to be the guy who took Tannehill to the next level? Fail.

Wasn’t Gase the guy who was going to design an offense to take advantage of mismatches? Fail.

Now, we’re being told Tannehill was just never the right guy and Gase wanted to go with somebody else….and that there were just too many injuries for him to run the offense he wanted? BS. Sounds like the team spitting out excuses to set the stage to keep Gase and blame TBaum to get rid of him.

Year 3: blame the front office for picking the players who broke the lockerroom

Year 4: blame the coach I mean

Right now we are still in year 3 of this cycle
But I really think we can consolidate some of these things and maybe buy a couple of years of success

    ————-
I’m just sayin’, Gesicki is not a traditional TE… he’s an ‘attack the seam’ TE, and damn good at it. Gase should have been able to utilize Gesicki’s strengths earlier than just NOW working him with the WR corps.

I’ll give Gase this much: he’s trying to build Gesicki into a complete TE… and Gesicki has been getting better at blocking. But until he arrives as a fair/decent in-line blocker, Gase should have been using Gesicki this year to his advantage… especially after we went a stretch of games without all of Albert Wilson, Jakeem, and DeVante.

To put it lightly, Gase has failed to get the best out of Gesicki in his rookie year. But conversely, let us hope that Gase is WINNING in the long-term by making Gesicki more complete.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe just maybe Gesicki isn’t good enough yet. Gase doesn’t have a joystick. Other rookies are playing and having ups and downs too. That’s part of what is going down.

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    —————
Good reason to re-sign Ja’Wuan. He could do better in pass-pro (consistency is his problem), but he’s VERY good at run-blocking.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Gesicki is never going to be a good blocker. He wasn’t drafted to be an in-line blocker. Hopefully he becomes a blocker who doesn’t cost you, but his focus should be catching passes not blocking. Tons of TEs like him are successful in the NFL w/o being good blockers. Figure out ways to isolate him on LBers. It’s not that hard. Then, find a QB that can make seam throws not perimeter throws all day long.

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Travis Kelce is not a very good blocker and his presence helps open up the KC offense

I dont think he should have few touches. I like the 17 per game. I think the injuries that started nagging him played a role. But I dont know…..I do know Gore ran more effectively. I’d love to see him back, but dont stop watching because I dont think RT17 will be here.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So are we looking at Marino as the oversight football guy with Grier and Gase continuing?

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I dont know? Wonder if hes been assessing talent or just a figure head over the years. At least he could go scout QBs!

  42. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

The Gesicki I saw in GB was getting moved off his routes and hands on him disrupted everything.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Marino’s credentials are big time HS QB, college, 1st rd pick NFL prospect, played in big games. He’s not a cap accountant guy or deep into it personnel guy. His role might just be Ross’ football ear and he communicates with personnel people and coaches.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who knows Ross might fire everyone. But if not it sounds like he doesn’t think Tannenbaum is a good fit. Maybe he sees Grier and Gase are more on the same page. I don’t know.

  44. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Why are we firing Mike Tannenbaum?

My guess is he’s dead weight on a team that is mediocre, for what purpose do you need Tannenbaum? and does that purpose justify paying him?

maybe they think Chris Grier is fine without tannenbaum or maybe he’s the beginning of other heads rolling.

will they replace him or just carry on status quo? that to me would say a lot as to him being dead weight and would put the rest of the FO on notice.

i hear Dawn Aponte may be coming back.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gase is dead weight too, they should fire him as well. If Gase isn’t on the same page with the other guys then tear that page out and fire him.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Firing Gase is premature at this point IMO.
First of all he hasn’t had his starting QB last year and most of this year, you have to give him a chance to succeed as firing him now and bringing another guy in with different philosophy would set us back.
That said if you have a guy that is a proven winner that you are in love with such as a Harbaugh then you pull the trigger.
at this point i don’t see that guy out there so you let Gase continue down the road you’re on to see where it leads.
after 3 years he’s made the playoffs 1, the other 2 years were injury ridden

  46. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Ross loves Tannehill, Maybe Tannenbaum who was scouting other QBs such as Hebert & Grier was on board with dumping Tannehill ….

so Ross decided to dump Tannenbaum??

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This is exactly why I don’t want to sign Frank Gore next season . . .
    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/chiefs-reportedly-give-damien-williams-a-two-year-extension-worth-up-to-8-1-million/

Why pay a 36 YO RB $3-4M when we have 2 young RB’s under contract who are more than capable. At least they could be more than capable, they just need to be used!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Even $1M. Use the guys we have that are making $1M (Drake) and $717K (Ballage). Use the money for Gore somewhere else. Draft another late RD RB for depth.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Gore brings production to the power running game that Drake doesn’t, not sure about Ballage?? a lack of that production makes us predictable.
By all means bring back Gore until he mo longer has the kind of production he had this year.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course you’re not sure about Ballage, because he we hardly used him. Now’s the time to get Ballage some carries to see what he can do, along with Drake. Branden Bolden isn’t here next year, so Gase will probably give him 15 carries on Sunday. I feel like we go through this every year. “We don’t know what this guy can do”

What Gore does at this point is clog progress. A team on the brink of a championship should have Gore on their team as a mentor and part time player, he doesn’t belong here taking work away from 2 young quality backs on their rookie contracts.

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Look at the Colts this season. They let Gore go, and believe me, Gore did well for Indy. This year they have a trio of young backs, Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins, and they have a great offense. Oh, they have a QB . . .

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we all know Drake isn’t that guy that can be dependable in a power running set. he doesn’t consistently pick up the tough yards as a Gore.

Maybe Indy’s RBs are better than ours, you can not rely on Drake to get us in manageable down and distance on 2nd down as you can Gore.

It’s all about production. and Drake has a lack of it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ballage might be the grinder. I have thought of him as David Johnson lite, I hope we get to see what he can do Sunday.

HERD, 100% agreed and I see many other s on here do as well. IMO, Gase designed this offense to focus/feature WIlson and Grantman. When he lost both he is visibly even more lost. He has not been able to figure anything else out in regard to using the weapons he has. Give Andy Reed this offense with Stills, Amendola, Parker, Drake, Balledge, O’Leary, Gesicki, and smythe. He would have our heads spinning with excitement. Gase is clueless and proved he can not adjust. When he does adjust, he goes away from what’s working and changes to what doesn’t work (I am mainly referring to running the ball).

You want to look at a young offensive minded HC that has his offense tearing up the NFL, look across the state of FLA at Dirk Koetter. At least he delivered on on what his strength is. He did it with 2 QB’s that many of you laugh at here, Fitzgerald and Winston.

BTW – TB has 14 guys on IR. I’m aware their defense is horrible, but so is ours, but their offense is top 10, top 5 in some categories. I’m also aware they’re 5-10, but at least they do something well. What do we have to hang our hat on?

Was looking at teams who will pick before us in 1st round and may have a need to draft a QB.
    Jaguars – Very possible
Giants – Drafted Lauletta last year but may draft one in 1st if they part ways with Manning.
Bucs – Do they stay with Winston?
Bengals – Do they move on from Dalton?
Broncos – Do they keep rolling with Keenum?
Redskins – Does Gruden roll with Johnson or McCoy? Alex Smith seems done.
Raiders – Carr has been playing better second half of season. Does Chucky use his #4 pick on a QB?
The others seem to have their guy or drafted one in the 1st last year.

IMO, these are the top 4:
    •Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State
    •Drew Lock, Missouri
    •Will Grier, West Virginia
    •Ryan Finley, NC State

Who do you think pulls the trigger in the 1st round and for who?

  55. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s rather depressing that we have nothing to hang our hat on and get excited about going into the offseason. Nothing we can say “this is our nucleus, let’s build around it”. We have questions at GM, HC/OC, DC, QB. Even if you are in the camp of giving Gase more time, keeping Tannenbaum/Grier, or giving Tanny more time, you can’t be thinking “this is definitely the guy, we’re set here”.

The only thing we can say is locked down solid is our special teams coach. All other key positions listed above are either definitive crap, arguably crap, likely crap, might be crap, or are maybe, possibly not entire crap. 3 years in with this many questions makes me personally question the effectiveness of anything this regime has done.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our kicker is pretty solid, punter not bad either. Our LT looks very good as well. Xavien Howard is great, we need to find a CB opposite him. Minkah will probably be much better next year. Other than that, lots of questions.

      • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Also, if we get the same Kikonext year that we had this season.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not looking at players (except QB due to the importance of the position). I’m looking at organizational structure.

We have some nice pieces on the field to build around, but if our organization is a mess, our we going to make the right decisions to build around that? Nope! It’ll be the same ‘ol story we’ve seen for the last 20 years.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I wasn’t meaning to be argumentative (not sure how my last post read). I was just clarifying the intent of my original post.

  56. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess what I’m saying is it doesn’t matter if we have a few nice pieces on defense or offense. If we don’t have a QB, if we don’t have a HC, if we don’t have a DC, if we don’t have the right personnel acquisition department (VofOP/GM/HC, whoever the hell does what in that group), then we really don’t have shit. Having a good kicker, or a stud CB, or a great ST coach doesn’t matter if you don’t have these other key pieces in place. And right now we have questions at eveyr single one of these levels.

It’s hard to even be excited about moving forward because we need to make changes at some or all of these positions, so that means either we’re starting over again…not a fun prospect…or maybe even worse, Ross might only do a partial reset, which looks likely, and we don’t solve the problem. Lotta questions going forward. Not sure how bright our near future is.

    Mike E,

That’s my problem with Gase. Koetter, McVay, etc, etc all produced at least on one side of the field. We have nothing positive to look forward to. A draft full of talent that will be mismanaged. Why can’t Drake be the kind of runner we need? McCaffrey, Hunt, Kamara all all similar weight ranges and even Hunt has more carries as an unemployed dude. Our run average is in the top 10 but we have to pass more because Tannehill is such a great decision maker who passes past the 1st down marker every time…except he isn’t. Gase says the problem is we don’t get enough plays in a game…why not offensive genius?

I think between the 3 guys you mentioned Haskins is the favorite
and yes he will probably be gone

I suspect between and April the negative stuff on Greir, Haskins and Lock will be piled on

I actually expect it to be a little more intense this year with people hoping these qbs get pushed down

and that’s the nature of the draft

but I think at the end of the day you look at the guys skill set
then try to understand whether he is mentally prepared to play QB in the NFL (which is hard)
and then try to make a determination to whether the prospect can be the leader of a high scoring offense

and there is nothing about those guys that says they won’t be able to do this right now IMO

He would be a quick plan for offseason IMO.

Resign Wake, 5mil per, limited situational pass rusher role or let him walk.

Renegotiate Quinn, extend him another year, work the number to have a 16mil 1 year extensiton, 8mil fully guaranteed year in 2019 and 8mil no guaranteed money in 2020. That will get us back 4 mil on cap and keep us we a primary pass rusher (we just dont have anyone we can rely on to man that position and id rather keep him than Branch).

Cut/Trade Ryan Tannehill (i dont think we will be able to trade him) save the 13mil.

Cut/Trade Andre Branch save the 7mil.

If healthy, re-sign William Hayes, 10mil 2 years. fully guaranteed first year, no guarantees 2020.

Re-sign Jawuan James 10mil per, small cap hit the first year, fat in year 2 contract. approximate 5mil in cap hit in 2019.

Rescind the 5th year option for Parker, save 9mil.

Renegotiate with Amendola to extend him and give guarantees he currently doesnt have. Extend him another year, 10mil, 5 in guarantees paid in 2019, and 5 no gurntees in 2020. Save 1mil.

    Re-sign Gore, 1 year, 2mil, 1 guaranteed.

Re-sign Travis Swanson, minimum contract, 1 year.

Re-sign Branden Bolden, minimum contract, 1 year.

    Offer Jesse Davis.

If OTC is updated and their cap estimation is correct, then we would start with about 19mil in space. With the moves listed above we would have 34 in cap space after the cuts and 16 after the re-signs.Sign a stand in QB 7-8mil 2 years, first year guaranteed, roster bonus for second year. (Bridgewater, McCown, Fitzpatrick) Pick up an OL or 2 minimum/low contract types for depth and competition. use the rest on the rookie class and roll-over.

    Draft.
QB best available, and i would be willing to trade up for the right guy. Drew Lock i think could be available when we pick. If we landed Lock, Hebert, or Haskins i think id be pretty excited by it. Depending on where we pick in the first, i might even consider taking Grier in the first with a trade back. Id target DE/DT/OL with the next three to four picks and id target a WR in a later round, im somewhat targeting Hunter Renfrow WR Clemson if he is still available in the 6th. Grab whatever is best available of any position in the 7th.

  76. D's avatar D says:

Lock has big arm talent. He is still refining things but overall he is a really solid QB that could play right away. Id rather let him cook a year or at least part of a year before i threw him in there just so he could spend some time getting the playbook, etc. I like Grier a lot too, he also has good mobility but his arm isnt as good as Lock’s. He’s the best pass rusher we have on the roster, and if we lose Wake in FA or because he retires, then we would have only Harris and a very overpaid Andre Branch. Id rather cut Branch and try to extend Quinn, who has been coming along toward the end of the season, than i would the other way around. He is a decent option as an OT/OG depth player who might be able to take over a spot eventually. I like the idea of he, Martez Ivey from UF, and there are a couple of guys on ND’s OL that would fit that kind of role too.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Disagree on Gore, and also disagree on Quinn. He’s not worth near what we’re paying him. I’d start Harris and maybe re-sign Hayes, and draft a rookie, and whatever happens happens. I don’t pay Quinn just because he’s better than anyone else, he’s not worth what he gets paid. Gore is a progress stopper. We’re not a player away from anything, I think that’s the type of team Gore should play for. A team with a ton of talent that needs a good role model, and a guy that can play if needed. If he’s starting over Drake and Ballage again next year I’ll flip my shit, I swear!

  89. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 18 (PHI): Allen, Josh, OLB, Kentucky (A+)…
    ————–
NO WAY does Josh Allen last that long, but if he does, that would be KILLER for us! I’m figuring he goes top-5, no later than top-10. I also strongly believe he’s going to be a DE in the NFL at 6’4″, 258, and 4.59 speed.

Needless to say, he’s on my ‘man-crush’ list… but I’m afraid we’d have to trade a LOT of Draft capital to move up for him.

  91. D's avatar D says:

My preference would be to draft Bennie Snell Jr in a middlish round to replace Gore, as i agree with you about the progress part. Id like to keep a vicious type power runner to complement Ballage and Drake, but the problem is we could use that pick on a different position, so having Gore is keeping that option open. I would definitely not prioritize running him over Drake even if we kept him, im not in that camp.

Quinn id restructure or cut, i think restructuring if done right doesnt make things worse, it can actually make things better. The reason you feel so strongly aginst it was because of the last two people we did it with and how we did that restructure. We didnt do anything but push bigger problems further down the line, but thats not how it has to be. If we need Quinn for next year, and we give him guarantees that entice him to shift his money around we can wind up only guaranteeing him for the time we intended to use him, and softening the blow.

So lets say we look at our team and decide hey we need this guy, and he has 13mil left on his contract. If we need him and use him next year, we owe him 13mil. thats going to be 13mil against the cap. Now if i restructure his contract to be 16 mil by extending him a year, and i make half of that guaranteed, the player has incentive to sign that, he technically takes a this year pay cut and next year snt guaranteed anyways so we can cut him in 2020 if things dont work out. You are in a better position with that move not a worse one and you arent locked in anymore than you were since you needed him on the team anyways.

I just cant see us bottoming out at the DE position so hard when we have no clue if Hayes will be back and at 100%. We really have no clue about Harris and if he will turn the corner, and after that its scrubs off the street. We also are boxing ourselves into HAVING to go for DE early if we do that because we are so bereft of talent at the position. Quinn has been playing a good bit better this last half of the season so i think maybe acclimating to the system may have been part of it, that and the horrible use of talent we have had by our coaches in general.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not really $13M against the cap, if we cut him, he has no dead cap hit, he’s just gone. I’m pretty much just trying to clean up the roster, and damn the standings. If we play with young guys who don’t get it done, so be it, but we don’t need to overpay veterans ridiculous salaries, and that includes Tannehill, Quinn and possibly even Reshad Jones. I’d trade Jones if we could get a 3rd RD pick. Set us up for a year down the line, maybe 2020 where we have a good amount of cap space, draft a QB, and hopefully draft that QB from a top 5 spot. Set us up real good.
