Unofficial official news, and other rumblings

Despite the fact that the New England Patriots are still in the playoffs, and therefore “officially” we have not asked the Patriots “unofficial” defensive coordinator if he wants the job, that hasn’t stopped all media outlets, both radio and print from saying the Dolphins new Head Coach is Brian Flores. In addition, they’re already “unofficially” naming his staff, as Flores has tabbed Jim Caldwell for a senior advisory role to the Dolphins. I’d like to “officially” wish Jim Caldwell a Happy Birthday today. Caldwell, formerly the Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts, who by the way, was 24-8 as HC before being “unofficially” forced to “Suck for Luck”.

There are rumors that Flores wants to hire former Arkansas and Wisconsin Head Coach Bret Bielema as Defensive Coordinator, but need I say, that’s “unofficial”. Bielema has good experience as a Head Coach, and has a strong defensive background.

The Bengals “Unofficially” hired former Dolphins QB Coach Zac Taylor, who was QB’s Coach for Ryan Tannehill. This leads to “unofficial” rumors that Ryan Tannehill will be the next Bengals QB. Oh please, please make that happen!

The NY Jets “officially” introduced Adam Gase as Head Coach, and I have to say that after the press conference, I kinda feel bad for him. Oh, I still hope he falls flat on his face, but his “crazy eyes” were mostly what the NY sports media talked about. The morning after on the Boomer and Gio show on WFAN in NY, there were parodies of many different “eyes songs”, like “Betty Davis Eyes”, These Eyes”, “Doctor My Eyes”, etc. I’d prefer the NY media destroy him for his football acumen, or lack thereof.

Speaking of the NY Jets, they are close to tying things up with former Browns interim HC Gregg Williams, meaning they have “unofficially” signed him. That’s a damn good hire. It pains me to say so, but the Jets are definitely making things easier for Gase. Williams will allow Gase to do exactly what he did in Miami, which is ignore the defense. While we had hack DC Matt Burke, the Jets have an excellent veteran defensive coach running the defense. It was clear that Adam Gase does NOT have any control of the 53 man roster, another bonus for the petulant young HC who routinely jettisoned players in his Dolphins tenure.

So to recap, we “unofficially” have Brian Flores as HC, Jim Caldwell as a Senior Advisor, and Bret Bielema as DC. We have “officially” lost D-Line Coach Kris Kocurek, who goes to the San Francisco 49ers. Kocurek, by the way, replaces former Dolphins DT Jeff Zgonina. I liked that guy when he played here.

Lastly, but not leastly, the Dolphins have “officially” hired former Bills Scout Marvin Allen as Assistant GM. Allen was with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-2017, in which they drafted QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill, RB Kareem Hunt, DT Chris Jones, DE Dee Ford, OT Eric Fisher, TE Travis Kelce, OG Zach Fulton and OT Mitch Morse. That’s quite a resume! Looks like an excellent hire, we’re going to need some excellent drafts to become a power in the AFC East. Grier and Allen have a good relationship, and one that should help us going forward.

RIP Bob Kuechenberg

Nice write up Mike! but I have to ask….”Lastly, but not lastly” what does that mean?

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Brian Flores only got two votes on the poll. Are you guys happy with the selection? I am NOT happy. I do not want him here. There have been zero successful HC’s from Belicheat’s tree. All that fruit has been rotten.

Hopefully he is a place holder for the “Tanking” season and Harbough comes available next year.

I don’t know Rock, he wasn’t my choice, but only for the reason that other Patriots disciples have failed. That doesn’t mean he will. Hopefully he assembles a good staff, and I think bringing in Caldwell, who has plenty of experience, and possibly Bielema, who also has experience will help him along.

Unofficial is just that as to us. Flores could just change his mind or the Evil one could say “gonna retire in two years…. wouldn’t you like to be the next Pats HC?”

It is a good and thorough article, but it’s essentially a waste of time until things are made official. Stanger just made a great point above.

One thing I’ve learned over all these years: until it’s made official, it’s all just gossip and rumors… and more often than not, it’s lies just to generate clicks (revenue) for so-called journalists/writers.

Rockphin, thanks for sharing the link, though. If all falls into place, Wingfield’s article could become a decent resource in the future.

I certainly hope so but i doubt it, maybe if he’s there at 13, if you’re looking to Tank you have to stockpile draft picks not sell the farm for one guy

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There’s a link from wingfield above which dissects the pasties* defense sets.
This is EXACTLY what I said was wrong with the way we were running the wide 9
insofar as what we were asking our DEs to do.

“The scheme is also designed to shut down inside zone, but also free up the linebackers with fewer keys and responsibilities. Instead of asking the defensive ends to set the edge on the way to their pass rush (the design of the wide-9) this alignment puts that responsibility on the outside linebackers.

We blunted Wake’s contributions, ruined Harris’s speed step, and wasted Quinn’s specific skillset.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And while I agree with all of the above, the key ingredient missing from our “Wide-9” design was a 1-tech DT… who Gase happily got rid of.

D and I have been ALL over this from the jump.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You guys say that about Phillips because of his size but forget about his inconsistency. He was last on the depth chart at DT. He’s not a special player and when he was still here you think our defense was so much better? Godchaux and Taylor are better than Phillips.

    • Harris was drafted for the wrong scheme. He’s not a fit as a DE in a 4-3. All he is IS a speed rusher. He’s not a complete DE.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wasn’t just wide 9 because we didn’t even run it that often. I saw more standard 4-3 than wide 9, then lots of nickel.

  32. We should actually see if we could try and trade Harris to a team that runs a 3-4 and is looking for a pass rushing OLB because he’s more of a fit there.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or use him differently like how the Pats use their DE/OLBs. If Flores is our new HC, I don’t think we’ll be a standard scheme on defense. Why would we be when he’s been part of what the Pats have been doing with hybrid formations for over a decade.

      • true. Pats seem to get things done with guys in unorthodox ways. I guess it’s a wait and see thing. Look at how well Cooper did in Dallas compared to Oakland. If we’ve got the right coaching staff maybe even Parker will shine this coming season.

I’m just going to shortcut to a point… weren’t you a supporter of Phillips, too… inconsistency and all?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

His first two seasons for sure but he never emerged as anything but what he’s always been. He makes a play or two a game that shows potential and then he would disappear for much of the game or just be average. Suh was the 1-tech DT you want but his contract wasn’t a good fit for us.

Like I said earlier, we didn’t even play wide 9 much of the time. We used a lot of typical 4-3 alignments.

All this said, who cares now, our defense will not be the same in 2019 both in personnel or scheme.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Alright, buddy… fair enough.

I just don’t agree with how Gase would part with talent. He really couldn’t manage alpha personas.

And on the point of Jordan Phillips… you don’t fire somebody when there’s nobody else waiting in the wings to replace him (size/mold/attributes).

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Phillips isn’t an alpha. LOL

Gase parted ways with divas, not alphas.
Ajayi – was about personal stats
Landry – was about personal stats and #1 WR money
Phillips – was about not starting even though he didn’t impress the coaches enough

Those guys were complainers, not alphas.

Again that said, all of that is over. Off we go! LOL

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You know who could flourish in any defense if used properly is Jerome Baker. That guy can do a lot of different things and he’s still learning. His quickness and speed is something you can’t teach.

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, you see the Pats use 1 DT hand in ground and 4-6 defenders all standing up – who blitzes and who doesn’t. I’ve seen them also use no DL with hand in the ground. They don’t play a system, they play matchups that help them win the game. It’s quite fascinating. Belichick did a lot of creative things with the Giants back in the day too, the difference was they had good DL and exceptional LBs.

LOL, nah, man. It just seems to me that Gase couldn’t manage ‘alphas’ on his team. And you forgot to mention the BIGGEST one: Suh.

Hey, it’s all water under the bridge at this point.

But also… now ya know why Tannenbaum was fired… and we’re still paying on our dead cap due to his decisions.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you asked reporters who followed the team, they all Gase embraced alphas, didn’t like me first types which are not alphas. A good example of an alpha is Ray Lewis. None of the three players we’re discussing has a Ray Lewis mentality.

Tannenbaum wasn’t fired because of our cap, he was fired along with Gase because even if the team doesn’t have the right makeup, they tried to correct it and win now regardless of sustainability. Ross got tired of that trend. Grier must have influenced him and/or was known for saying we should be doing this another way. That’s what everything points too.

We could have $60+M in cap space to work with in a rebuild this year in 2019. Think of it this way, your draft options are endless now. Except for probably Safety. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think that was a compliment to Miami. Once Ajayi was out, Williams and Drake were the tandem. It lasted only 2-3 weeks when Williams went down for the season. There was a reason some of us liked him, we did showcase him. He just wasn’t the starter. He wasn’t in KC either until the top two dogs went down. Williams is also on a superior offense now but we all knew he had some ability.

I think his mind frame is also that he’s in a once in a lifetime moment with the Chiefs and a Championship. I want to see the Chiefs win it all and Williams is one of the reasons. The others are my respect for Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Williams was good for us, but I think we all understand how much better any of our players would be in the Chiefs offense. They’d even find a way to get Parker and Gesicki humming.

We didn’t use him all that much, but I thought he was a good receiving back. He’s worked hard and is now a better rusher as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed! He’s taking advantage of the moment and I’m rooting for him. I hope he’s one of the reasons the Chiefs destroy the Pats. LOL

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Didn’t Gase actually call Ajayi and Landry alphas? It’s hard to find alphas who don’t have some diva to them anyway….even a guy like Ray Lewis. The real issue is that, like it or not, coaches need to deal with selfish, egocentric players in the NFL. As a coach…and I said this at the time…you have to find a way to coach them. That’s your job. You can’t just get rid of talent because you don’t get along with or like them. Building a team with “your guys” sounds good…but it shouldn’t trump talent. All 53 guys will never all be your type of guys anyway.

sickening how we let Damien Williams go for nothing, guy’s a baller and he can catch the football too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was a UFA. Every team loses some guys to FA. Really… Damien Williams was the key? Maybe just maybe the Chiefs offense has something to do with their 3rd back on the depth chart stepping up. Good for him, but man he’s not the reason why our Phins are where they are.

You have a problem with Drake/Ballage?

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Love Drake / Ballage (and Gore)
But someday soon, we need to keep guys we develop.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just thinking of what’s out there and options. I could see us rolling with Falk and Rudock and signing Bridgewater. Play 2019 with them, see if Teddy can reach a high level, and/or the young bucks show something. Then target the 2020 class if not satisfied. I don’t think the team will be talentless and horrible, but it will be young and new and playoffs are probably a lofty goal. But who knows?

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Bridgewater has experience and has overcome – to a degree major adversity. I’m not sure we’re going heavy on QB this year. We’ll see. I’m looking for stopgap and development. We likely draft a QB too.

I’m pretty sure Bridgewater wants to start or at least compete to do so and not be a backup. Unless Brees hangs it up after this run and Teddy is their guy for now.

Just looking at options, nothing more than speculating opportunities.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Several ppl on here say it was not about the wide 9 (“we didn’t run it that much etc”) but there is a right way and a wrong way to run every scheme.

The Boston defense is the right way to run the Wide 9. Our “DC” never really understood how to align the players to exploit the angles of the wide 9. A crucial aspect of it is a stud 1 tech.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  48. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I don’t really get behind this idea that the franchise is going to purposely tank. That’s an insult to every player and team in the league.
Not going after a high price QB or selling your next couple drafts doesnt mean tanking.

I believe the defense can vastly improve with the young talent already here. Just need somebody better to put the pieces in the proper places.

And the offense cant be any worse no matter what they do. So to me I think the team can still compete while rebuilding. The record may be a few games worse but I think the blowouts go away. If that happens then I’ll be happy and see it as a good step forward for the future.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

On that note…let’s see what Grier does running the team. I have feeling he was told “No” alot.

      GO FINS

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. But now we killed our draft position again. LOL

Winning games is part of building a winning culture. Losing for a savior is ghey. 😉

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        Yep.

Thing is I think they could lose a few more next year but actually be a better team…if that makes sense.

And if they are sold out on “their” guy then it doesnt matter the draft position. They can sell 3 years if they have to. But they better hit on it. LOL.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What happens if we go 9-7 and make a wildcard? Is it we won too much? It’s goofy in theory. What’s wrong with being decent during a rebuild – you have to hit rock bottom to do it? Say’s who?

      • I agree. Who says the team has to suck during a rebuild? It doesn’t. You build it the right way and it doesn’t mean it’s going to suck. We get a coaching staff that knows how to utilize the players better on both sides of the ball and knows how to develop the talent that’s already there and is brought in thru the draft and this team may surprise a lot of people.

Yeah, we’ve got some holes on both sides but it’s still not impossible to see this team win 9 games next season with the talent it’s got.

  49. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I dont see them selling out for this years draft. I’m talking when we go 7-9 again next year! LOL

  50. Drafttek has us taking Dexter Lawrence in the first, Anthony Nelson in the 2nd and Ta’amu in the 4th. Funny this is they had the Ta’amu pick before the meeting at the Shrine game practice.

I actually like these picks. They also have us taking Brumfield, the guard out of LSU, in the 3rd.

Building a team this way makes a lot more sense than trading and reaching for a quarterback like Jones or Lock or picking one of them at #13. You want to BUILD a team. Not say, well if it doesn’t work out, we can just draft another one next year.

A lot of people are saying that about the Murray pick. Take Murray. Worst thing that can happen is it doesn’t work out and we suck and then you can pick another one next year. What kind of logic is that?

I don’t know about anyone else but I’m kind of tired of waiting for this team to become good and I mean consistently good; not win 10 games one year and suck for 3 because we signed a bunch of guys to short-term contracts to “win now” and then cut them after one season.

Build it right. I’ve been saying that for how long. I think we finally get to see how that’s going to work out. Finally.

  51. Walter Football, on the other hand, has us taking Kyler Murray in the first. Their reasoning? “there’s no dumber owner of a bad NFL football team than Ross”

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never meant the players would purposely try to lose games. What I mean by tanking, is say playing the entire season with Fales or Falk.

in 2016 Gase had success with Ajayi, in 2017 when he kicked Ajayi to the curb he no longer had a running game and we were horrible, in 2018 he signed some key FAs and brought in Gore.
barring injuries and bad play calling this was a good team.
it would seem that Gase was learning on the job. he wasn’t using Gore at first very well but he seemed to adapt to giving Gore more carries.
he went 5-1 against the Jets, maybe that’s why they hired him.
he learned on the job here, i just hope he doesn’t take that knowledge to NY and exact revenge on us.

He must have some serious social anxiety, and im sure its exacerbated by being in the media capitol of the US. Thats some serious eye disengagement he was doing there.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

That’s the way he is normally, if you watch the presser his eyes are always wide open. he would have been great in “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest”

i had a friend like that who passed away, he looked like a homicidal maniac

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah, but that eye tracking is like e is deliberately avoiding making eye contact with the people who are asking the questions. They usually look straight at who they are talking to.

He is good enough to get a good offer from someone so i just wonder how important he will be to a new HC/OC’s system.

  61. D's avatar D says:

I see a mixed bag of comments from different non dolphin fan based places on the Gase hire/fire. We as fans have a much more personal view of things but as a whole i dont think we are too far off what others are thinking too. We seem to be a mixed bag of yay and nay about being happy he is gone, and thats what the rest of the people seem to be too. I think the guy could have spent another year or two as our HC as long as he changed his mindset about start over, change QB, etc. but him leaving was just as good, he dint really seem to have the team behind him despite the things the players said, so i dunno if he ever would have put together a solid team here.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My friends that are Jets fans have already rationalized to themselves why it was a great hire/. It might turn out that way if he’s willing to let qualified people do their jobs. Having Williams as DC was big get for him. If they sign an OC equal to Williams as a DC, things may go well there.

That’s not the case here because he had just sat down and they hadn’t started asking questions yet. He was surveying the room. I would love to see the room from behind him to get an idea of what he was looking at or if he was just looking away from things.

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s pretty smarmy. There is something about him i dont really care for, or he just may remind me of a coach i had that i really didn’t like. Not sue. Soon as he fails though he is one of those guys who might have his head be the one that rolls.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Nobody forced Gase to go with Tannehill. Gase coached him for 3 years and he didn’t become anything more than an average NFL QB. He didn’t coach Tanny to that next level. He failed in what he was supposedly known for….and to an extent….what he was hired to do. But, early on Gase was full-in on Tanny and basically called Tanny detractors morons every chance he got….kinda like around here….for questioning his ability. Gase failed because he tied his success to Tanny’s. That’s on him….can’t run from it now.

  66. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Gase then basically told the stej that he sacrificed stats to win games….which means he handcuffed RT17. So…..was it just his ego he was pumping RT17 up for because he knew he’d make him great? Or does he figure nobody in NY ever saw his pressers down in Miami….

  67. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Yes, there have been comments over the last weeks suggesting that people other than Gase were making the decision to go with Tanny. Not a big deal. None of us really know how things went down.

  68. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ER,
Shouldn’t a coach always sacrifice stats for wins? Lol
    ***
Does that mean there were times he was sacrificing wins for stats? That would suggest he was trying to prop up his “QB guru” status by calling games to get his QB numbers instead of going for wins. I didn’t watch his presser, but I sure hope he wasn’t suggesting that. That would be hard to fathom….until you consider all the 3 yard passes we saw on 3rd and long. Lol

Randy – Did Gase say it, or someone from the Jets who was defending him?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it seems a bit out there that Gase had even said what he said about sacrificing stats for wins. But clearly (at least to me), Tanny’s stats were propped up by Gase’s play-calling… bubble-screens, shovel-passes, and short passes altogether.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean… that Gase even decided to say what he said reeks of defending what actually happened.

I wont speculate whats going on with this guy or whether or not he should be able to handle all this but doesn’t it just feel weird that we are talking about a full grown adult wanting to go Columbine on his teammates because he was hazed, even if it was a severe hazing? _______________________________________________

Off season 2016 Ross liked Tannehill, he wanted him as the starting QB, clean cut upstanding guy that he had a lot invested in…
so when he hired Gase Ross wanted to stay with Tannehill and it was made clear prior to the hire,

Ross wanted to give Tannehill a couple of more years and if Gase thought he wasn’t his guy then they would move on….

    or so i read

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

they went 10-6 in year one made the playoffs and tanny got hurt and didn’t finish the season, one would assume Gase was very high on Tannehill at that point as were most around here.

Yep. That’s why I said either way it ALL failed

  81. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think there were two crucial actions by Gase that killed his job and the dolphins, first Tannehill should have got the surgery right away, 2nd dumping Jay Ajayi. and i think Ajayi was the worst decision.

Ahhhhhh, Gase sucks! I hope he screws up Darnold! lol

  83. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I read Gase stated one of the reasons he came to Miami was because of Tanny being here, not that Ross required that Gase keep him. Definitely nothing about those being terms of hire. Gase had control of the roster, and part of the reason he got fired was he wouldn’t give that up. How do those two concepts jive?

I don’t live in Miami. you guys that live there are closer to the source, so maybe that is the scuttlebutt around town? I certainly don’t recall that being in any of the major newspapers.

Drafttek has us taking 6’4 340 DT Dexter Lawrence in the first, Anthony Nelson in the 2nd and Ta’amu in the 4th. Funny this is they had the Ta’amu pick before the meeting at the Shrine game practice.

I actually like these picks. They also have us taking Brumfield, the guard out of LSU, in the 3rd.
    >>>
I agree with Lou and Draftek. This would be a great draft for us, especially if we get Flores, as he would want a DL run like NE did when they featured Vince Wilfork, huge and yet still athletic.

Follow that up with a 6’6 260 DE in Nelson. Iowa U site lists him as 6’7 271. And a OG nicknamed “Bruiser” … yeah I like that draft. Ta’amu is a good QB to get in the 4th to see if he outplays his draft status or he could make a good back-up for the star we draft the next year.

Started all 13 games at left guard and helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rusher Derrius Guice … Second team All-SEC selection by the league coaches … Second on team in offensive snaps with 804 and knockdown blocks with 53.5
