Josh Rosen – Should the Dolphins be interested if the Cardinals are looking to move him?

I woke up early this morning and glanced at the clock behind my bed. The clock notified me it was only 7:26AM and since I’m off from work on Wednesdays, I decided to try and fall back asleep. This is the time when the mind wanders as you try and hypnotize yourself to fall back asleep. Damn the football side of my brain, because now I’m starting to really think about Josh Rosen and if he’s worth not only the Dolphins interest, but my interest as well. I tried to remain as unbiased as I possibly could, and think of the positives and potential positives of Josh Rosen on the Miami Dolphins.

Last year the Dolphins held the #11 pick and there was just the usual speculation of the Dolphins possibly taking a QB, nothing overwhelming in that direction. At this juncture, Ryan Tannehill was mostly recovered from his ACL tear and there was optimism that Tannehill could return to the form of the 2016 season where he played his best football as a Miami Dolphin. As it turns out, 4 QB’s were chosen before the Dolphins picked at #11. Baker Mayfield went #1 to the Cleveland Browns, Sam Darnold went #3 to the NY Jets, Josh Allen went #7 to the Buffalo Bills and then 1 pick before Miami was on the clock, the Arizona Cardinals traded to the #10 spot from #15 to choose Josh Rosen. The Cardinals traded their #15 pick as well as their 3rd RD pick (#79) and their 5th RD pick (#152) to move up 5 spots to get Rosen. Why did the Cardinals trade up to #10? The Buccaneers weren’t taking a QB, they have Jameis Winston. The Redskins just acquired Alex Smith so they weren’t looking for a QB. The Saints have Drew Brees and also weren’t taking a QB. The Raiders had Derek Carr so they weren’t taking a QB. Of course they may have felt that another team might move up, or they may have thought the Miami Dolphins would have selected Josh Rosen if he fell to them.

This whole scenario is somewhat important when trying to gauge both the Dolphins interest and the value of Josh Rosen. Numerous reports came out after the draft that the Dolphins had no interest in Josh Rosen, but is that entirely true? Is it possible that they just said that to calm the fan base that so desperately wanted a new QB and felt that Tannehill wasn’t the answer? If the Cardinals hadn’t traded up in front of the Dolphins, would the Dolphins have selected Josh Rosen as their new QB? I don’t know and neither do you but I’m sure Chris Grier knows. It’s a little amusing that this article itself was spawned from a report about Kyler Murray that Charlie Casserly released about how poorly Murray fared in team interviews. I don’t know the veracity of that report, yet another report from Daniel Jeremiah indicated that the Cardinals were just thrilled with Murray in their interview. If that’s the case, then it’s safe to assume that Kliff Kingsbury and the Arizona Cardinals want Kyler Murray and will take him with their #1 pick, which of course then makes last years #10 pick, Josh Rosen, expendable.

So what about Josh Rosen? He played on an awful team and to be fair, Steve Wilkes, a first time HC was fired after just one season. That’s a rarity in the NFL. Byron Leftwich, a 1st time Offensive Coordinator and Mike McCoy shared that post. David Johnson made his return from a broken wrist that forced him to miss 15 games of the ’17 season. David Johnson had a down year from the monster seasons he previously put up. He didn’t even break the 1000 yard mark rushing, averaging a paltry 3.6 YPC. He did score 10 TD’s, 7 rushing, 3 receiving, but Johnson had over 300 total touches, so 10 TD’s is basically a TD every 30 touches. The receiving corps was led by future HOF WR Larry Fitzgerald, and then not much else. Rookie WR Christian Kirk, Chad Williams, Trent Sherfield and J.J. Nelson. I mean, besides Fitz and Kirk, what else is there? At TE it was a combo of Jermaine Gresham and Ricky Seals-Jones, and the 2 TE’s combined for 43 receptions and less than 400 yards. My question is, was this all Josh Rosen’s fault, or was he playing on a really poor team with an unprepared first time HC that got fired after 1 season?

During draft time last year, the knocks on Rosen were that he wasn’t always coachable, and some even questioned his heart, as to whether he was fully committed to the game because he came from a wealthy family and he didn’t need to play football. As far as talent was concerned, I recall many experts stating that Josh Rosen was the most NFL ready QB of the group. He had full understanding of his offense and was very intelligent and could quickly digest and comprehend any NFL offense. He played in 30 games for UCLA completing just over 60% of his passes with 59 TD’s and 26 INT’s. Not great by any means.

One impressive stat that stands out to me was Rosen completed 63% of his passes in 2017 for UCLA while being blitzed. He possesses excellent footwork and throwing mechanics. In 2017, his receivers dropped 31 passes which of course negatively impacted his completion %. He has excellent touch on his passes and also throws receivers open, and also stands strong in the pocket. The negatives are he has a slight frame and is an injury concern. His arm talent and arm strength are below average. He only completed 42% of his passes when throwing on the run. He sounds like the Anti-Tannehill. He does all the things Tannehill can’t do, and none of the things Tannehill can.

I didn’t write this article to make a case for the Dolphins to trade for Josh Rosen. I wrote it to give a little information and background in order to be objective about the possibility. I really don’t believe that Rosen is an NFL failure. His below average arm would have to be in the right system, but we’ve seen a QB with a below average arm and lots of intelligence succeed right here in Miami when Chad Pennington was here. Tom Brady himself was considered to have a below average arm, and the fact that most of his throws are short crossers adds to the credibility of that, although I believe that Tom Brady works so hard, his arm is probably better now than when he was drafted. I reiterate, we don’t know if Rosen is available, but if he is, keep an open mind.

I think the trade for Beckham almost guarantees that the Giants will pick a quarterback at 6

Thanks for the years of professionalism Mr. Wake. Sorry we couldn’t have given you more in the way of team success in return.

    • D says:

I knew we would see it at some point this offseason and it is sad but he’ll always be a dolphin

      • CavalierKong says:

Yep, writing was on the wall. I’ll be rooting for Tenn this year just to see him get a chance at a playoff win. Definitely a Fin for life.

  3. Ken says:

Well the Giants did a little bit better than a 4th rounder for their best WR

  4. mf13ss says:

    DAMMIT (regarding MR. Wake)… 😡

  5. Ken says:

I am just glad Wake didn’t go to the Patriots or the Jets

    • CavalierKong says:

Me too. It took me a couple years to forgive Taylor when he made that move to the Jest. I bet Wake would never even consider signing with either of those teams. – (Kong is just projecting, no actual evidence of that one way or another, lol)

Look at the talent we feed to the league it makes me sick

Trade up to 4 with good ‘ol Mike Mayock and get Haskins the hell in here

    • CavalierKong says:

I knew her from the movie Secret Admirer, but she was also on Full House. A bunch of celebs and rich people just got busted on bribery charges, allegedly paying to get their kids into prestigious schools, and she was one of them.

She was in full house too she was uncle Jesse’s GF then wife

  10. D says:

There isn’t a QB that given our circumstances I would trade up for. I think several are first round prospects but I’d rather let fate bring one to us at 13. I think there is probably a 30ish percent chance it could happen.

  14. Ken says:

Totally agree with D above about not trading up for a QB this year

Look at the Browns – get your QB and then go for it. We’re have good cap space next year. Can’t get a dud though so get Haskins.

From where I’m sitting, John Dorsey is about to become the next ROCKSTAR GM. He was solid in Green Bay as an assistant, he killed it in Kansas City, and now he’s killing it in Cleveland.

  26. So, the Browns went out and spent all that money of free agents and are still rumored to not be finished but there’s still one problem. Their head coach is Zac Taylor.

  27. stangerx says:

3 years for $23 million with $10 million guaranteed at 37 means all that taking care of his body really paid off for Wake.

Browns will be an interesting team to watch this year.

  30. naplesfan2010 says:

At least Wake got $10M guaranteed and a contract through his 40th birthday, if it he makes it to the end.

Bravo Cam Wake and thanks for all the exciting moments through the years.

I’ll never forget the walk-off safety on Hallowe’en.

I’m not sure. There is some kind of formula that determines it….or that’s what they say

  35. A lot of things being said about OBJ and Jarvis back together and how the Browns are doing in FA but the Giants got the better end of the deal on that trade. A first, a 3rd and Peppers? I’d take it. No one player is worth that much. Dorsey didn’t do great with that one.

From where I’m sitting, John Dorsey is about to become the next ROCKSTAR GM.

I screamed from the hills that he was my guy back in the day. Him and Pete Carmichael Jr. as HC were my tandem I pushed and pushed.

    • I’ll take what we got. We got it right this time. When everyone sees what we become there will be no more “We should have signed this player” or “that’s the head coach I wanted”.

We’re on the right track and we’re going to be the next dynasty.

  37. Rockphin says:

So sad to see Wake go!

  38. naplesfan2010 says:

It seems like everybody’s busy in FA, but they’ll be in cap space hell at some point soon.
Plus they will be getting guys who just got paid, aka demotivated.

seems like I’m showing sour grapes, but I’ve been there, seen that. (and all of you as well)
I mean the Dolphins have been “Winners of FA” a bunch of times in recent years.
Best it got us was 10-6 once.

Let’s squint and hunch our shoulders and scowl our way through this as tough as we can.
Persevere. Stay the course. Build it the right way.
We have a solid young core. Draft right and coach up the pups.

Or sign LeVeon and Aaron rodgers and win it all this year.

    • exactly. we’ve gone that way before and it meant nothing. just draft right, coach right and let everyone else sign overpriced free agents who feel like they’ve arrived.

the Browns look like the big winners right now but they’ve got some guys who are really a lot more interested in how pretty they look and their own personal stats than they are about anything else. if they’re making the money, putting up the stats and going to the Pro Bowl they can care less about their team winning it all because it’s all about #1.

  39. The Flying Pig says:

    Are we resigning Parker?

  40. Randy says:

Lots of people didn’t think Baker was a first round pick or felt he was the 4-5th best QB prospect last year. QBs are just difficult to read. All this blather about who’s good this year doesn’t mean much either. Let them play, and we’ll find out how good they are. Remember when that’s how things worked? Lol

  41. Tim Knight says:

The Browns are going for it and their division is there for the taking. They’ve been so bad for so long. I’m happy they get a chance to compete. Them losing the way they have wasn’t good for the league – 11 wins in the last 4 seasons. 3-13, 1-15, 0-16, 7-8-1. That’s the state and city where modern football was born – Paul Brown. That fanbase has been screwed for years. They deserve a revival.

  42. son of a son of a shula says:

  43. naplesfan2010 says:

Quite frankly, and I know they are friends and all, but can OBJ and Landry play together well?

    • son of a son of a shula says:

I don’t see why not. Slot and wide out.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

Landry hated the slot label here, says it’s main reason he left.
Wants to prove he can go deep.

Can a mere Kitchens manage alll that ego?
Sure hope it doesn’t go the way of the Owens and ocho sideshow at Cincy.

  44. Tim Knight says:

Good for Wake. I don’t understand 3 years but I’m not doubting him until he does.

  45. mf13ss says:

    Quick trivia question…

Anybody know who the LSU OC was when OBJ and Jarvis played together in college?

  46. naplesfan2010 says:

Can we get a 5th from Philly for Tannehill?
Or is everyone just waiting for us to cut him so they can get him free?

  47. Tim Knight says:

M13, Cam Cameron was fired from LSU in 2016. I can’t find anything that he’s still coaching.

    • mf13ss says:

Ah, $#!t… I’m going to need to page Mike E for some glasses: you ARE correct, man. And so with that stated, I think he hasn’t stepped back into the game due to his cancer scare.

Thank you for the correction, sir.

  48. Tim Knight says:

To move on from Tannehill we don’t have to get draft compensation for him. He was a 2012 draft pick. Just move on. It’s time for everyone.

    ——————
I’m pretty sure our FO screwed up by announcing that Tannehill won’t be back. Thus, every is waiting for us to cut him. In terms of a 5th from Philly for him? That sounds about right to me.

But unfortunately, I don’t think any team wants to take on Tanny’s current contract via a trade. Look for us to cut him.

  50. ElephantRider says:

I could have done what Dorsey was set up to do. No big deal…kid in a candy store

  51. Tim Knight says:

I’ll say this about Devante. The new coaching staff said; damn man, what’s going on? 6-3 215 4.5 speed, can high point the ball and make big plays. When you’re healthy!!! The team is taking a shot on a talented young player one more time. If he fails he’s gone. If we pay him his bonuses that means he reached his incentives. It’s good for both sides.

    No particular order:
    Parker
    Wilson
    Stills
    Grant

That’s a lot of big play ability. The sad fact is two of them went down for the year and the other one always has a nagging injury. But the talent is there.

Then get the TEs and RBs involved in the passing game.

This is going to be a strange season not knowing what to expect. But we have too much young talent to “tank”. Then add some FA and a draft to that. This team needs to build the trenches and find a QB. Lots of other pieces are in place. 2020 will be more exciting than 2019.

  52. ElephantRider says:

Baker was my choice of the big 4 last year.

But I think I’ll wait and watch the implosion if they dont win this year. Gonna be a lot of pouting on that team

    • ElephantRider says:

But to answer your question Son. It would all have depended on what trade down scenarios came in. But Baker was my top choice.
Point is Dorsey isnt doing anything special. He was given a golden ticket to the draft and almost an entire salary cap.

  53. New Age says:

Honestly, I would have drafted Baker #1.He had everything a top pick needs(except for a couple inches). In the modern NFL, That doesn’t mean much. today.

    1. Four year starter at two different programs.
    2. Walked on and beat higher touted QBs.
    3. Beat some of the top teams in college.
    4. Had different skill players every year and OU still got better every year.
    5. Led his team back into a top program.
    6. Made his teammates better
    7. Best looking resume that year, Every other QB disappointed in some way or another on the field. Baker excelled.

Maybe Bell is waiting for us to clear space tomorrow then he can be the next one to give the🖕to the stej. Maybe Peter King had it right…
    _____________________________________________

    No way on Bell,
the lack of presence in FA by the Dolphins speaks volumes of their plan, they are building thru the draft, besides RBs are a dime a dozen, Ballage may be better than Bell.

allocating that kind of money to the running back position IMO would not be a smart thing to do at this point. there are plenty of leveon bells in the draft for cheap.

  55. ocalarob says:

In recent years Miami has always been the most active in FAcy, they have landed top shelf FAs, it’s good to see this team going in a different direction, stay away from top shelf guys, once they are paid they have no incentive, down the road when we can compete with our younger guys then you may wisely sprinkle in some high character FAs.

  56. ocalarob says:

I would like to see us keep Brandon Bolden, has he been signed by another team?

  57. ocalarob says:

Does anyone know/like Eric Rowe CB, which the Dolphins seem ready to sign, can he play opposite Howard?

  58. ocalarob says:

how long will miami carry Tannehills huge cap hit of 26 mil….will he be released today???

  59. ocalarob says:

I still don’t think Rosen is in our future, at this time in miamis current situation you dont give up 2nd and 3rd round picks for a suspect QB on another team. you start building in the trenches and giving up early picks does not promote that philosophy.
Tyrod Taylor seems to be the best option at this point.

  60. ocalarob says:

wow OBJ to cleve for their 17th pick, I guess that will make Jarvis Landry happy

  61. ocalarob says:

    Wake to the Titans

  62. son of a son of a shula says:

    Bell to stej
    4 yr 52 mill

So take a year off cause 14 million wasn’t enough then sign for 13. I dunno.

    • ocalarob says:

I think it has to do more with the 35 mil guaranteed money than his yearly salary, if he played last year for 14 mil and blew out his knee he laves 20 mil on the table.

funny thing Gase’s RB move in Miami dumping Ajayi was probably the reason he’s no longer here, and now that move getting Bell may shorten his career in NY.

i think a lot of bells success had to do with the great people around him in pittsburgh such as ben and brown, not sure he will have that luxury in NY

  63. pheloniusphish says:

They’re going to keep RT one more year to torment Son. Seriously.

  64. pheloniusphish says:

Why should Miami dump RT this year. They don’t need the cap space, but they do need a QB. May as well keep him one more year. Take another shot at trading him next year.

  65. son of a son of a shula says:

The key word there Phelon is QB we need a QB that’s not what Tannehill has shown to be.

    • pheloniusphish says:

By that logic they definitely should keep him. After all, they don’t want to win many games, right?

  66. pheloniusphish says:

And, if they can get him off his knees long enough, they can trade Stills to Pittsburgh.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Earlier in the week a report said Philly called about him but we weren’t interested in moving him.

    • D says:

There was a report that Miami listend to the offer but didnt like the compensation, so yeah they lowballed us thinking we might want to do it to clear cap, at least not at the cost of being able to replace the player in the draft.

He is a solid player, was a higher round pick a few years back. I remember scouting him for us. A lot of us here liked him at the time.
