I watch free agency with no real regrets or jealousy to what other teams are accomplishing. Teams are spending record amounts of money on salaries as it usually goes. Players aren’t better than they used to be, there’s just more cap space available and players are demanding more. Crazy trades are happening as well, and I’m actually happy for the Cleveland Browns. They have some great fans in Cleveland, they deserve this. I think back to 1995 when Art Modell decided to move the Browns to Baltimore and created the new franchise the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland Browns fans had to wait 4 years to have football back as they created the new Cleveland Browns expansion team. Yeah, they deserve some good things so best of luck to them.
At the moment, just by virtue of talent we are the bottom feeders of our division. We’re following a strict plan and I’m very thankful that they haven’t blinked yet. The lone addition we have made is bringing in 29 year old TE Dwayne Allen, primarily a blocking TE. We let our young starting RT leave for greener pastures in Denver. We didn’t even try to stop Cam Wake from going to Tennessee. No effort was made to keep Frank Gore here. There are a number of veteran players that likely will be cut yet still remain. They remain because the team would prefer to extract some value in a trade, and trades are happening wildly all throughout the NFL. Robert Quinn, Josh Sitton, Ryan Tannehill, Kenny Stills and Reshad Jones all still remain, and some may end up being here for part or all of the 2019 season if a trade isn’t accomplished.
The key point is the mission seems to be clear. We’re clearing out the roster and preparing for a new direction. Not surprising, we’ve being doing a version of this what seems like every 3 years or so as we change coaching staffs, but this one is different. Not because of Brian Flores, this is more about Chris Grier, and maybe to some degree Steve Ross. They’re tired of treading water and I’m tired of watching them do it. Clearing the roster and then signing big money free agents is a contradiction. Clearing the roster says we’re starting anew, and then reaching for a star player with big $$$ attached who can help you win now but not later is completely at odds. Give Grier credit, he’s following through with his mission, and is staying the course.
The Dolphins did make one recent signing and I like it. DeVante Parker wanted to stay here, and the Miami Dolphins gave him yet another chance to fulfill his potential. The basic parameters are 2 years at $10M, with potentially as much as $13M if performance incentives are reached. Considering the 5th YR option was for $9.4M all guaranteed, this is a win. None of the 2nd year is guaranteed. This is an opportunity for Parker to do what we all thought he was capable of doing. Will he do it? It doesn’t matter, it was a good signing. Low risk, high reward, and that’s the right way to do it. It won’t be like this forever, but for this season and maybe next, the key to the vault has been thrown away.
There will be rough times ahead mateys, so batten down the hatches. Ryan Tannehill is still the QB and we basically have one good OL to count on (Laremy Tunsil). We need help in the trenches on both sides of the ball and although we were in it for Trey Flowers for about 5 minutes, he eventually went to the Lions for 5 years $90M. Crazy! The Jets have added some serious talent to build around their young QB Sam Darnold. LB C.J. Mosley signed for 5YR/$85M and then just last night Le’Veon Bell signed for 4YR/$52M. The Jets also added slot WR Jamison Crowder, but they did lose out on LB Anthony Barr who left the Jets at the hangar as he ended up staying home with the Vikes.
There are still a couple of things that have great interest to me that have yet to shake out. The Arizona Cardinals are purportedly going to take QB Kyler Murray at #1 in the 2019 Draft. That doesn’t mean they have to trade Josh Rosen, but it’s pretty likely they will to get back some value. How much compensation it will take to procure Rosen is up in the air. The compensation is whatever a team is willing to pay, and we all know that can get crazy. Some think a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick might get it done, but it could end up being a 1st RD pick and more. I would be very interested in Josh Rosen for a 3rd RD pick, and even up to a 2nd RD pick. I think that’s where I would cut it off. I’ve already explained here that he was on a terrible team with a coach that was fired after 1 season. We need talent at the QB position, and I don’t think we’re going to have a shot at Dwayne Haskins at #13, and I refuse to trade up. Destroying all our draft capital for one pick is also not part of rebuilding. Stay the course.
So as we currently stand, we are the worst team in the AFC East, and it’s OK. Not because we’re “tanking”, that’s ridiculous. We’re rebuilding. We’re not mandating to our players to lose, we’re just changing over the roster and not making any “win now” moves. I still think Ryan Tannehill and Robert Quinn will be gone soon. I also think it’s still possible that the Dolphins trade Reshad Jones, but less so than I used to. We just signed CB Eric Rowe who was with the Eagles and Patriots to a one year deal. Rowe has only played 12 games the last 2 seasons due to groin injuries. I remember Rowe well, he was a combine MONSTER. at 6’1 205, Rowe ran a 4.45 40, put up 19 reps, 39″ vertical, 125″ broad jump, 6.7 3 cone, 3.97 20 YD shuttle, ALL in the top performers category. This kid is a quick twitch athlete and an exciting athletic talent and at $3.5M, it’s another low risk, high reward signing.
Hang in there Dolphins fans, we’re finally doing it right. It may be painful in the short term, but it will pay off long term If you’ve been miserable with 6-10, 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 and once in a blue moon 10-6, this is the way to end all that. Be patient, because this year will hurt. We may not be very good, and the other teams in our division have made substantial gains. One step back, two steps forward.

Seriously though, its a good write and i agree. Im not jealous of anything i am seeing from other teams. They have their agenda and strategy and we have ours. They have their available cap space and we have ours. Hard to look at what they are doing and be envious of anything but the fact they have the space to do what they are doing, and wish we had a little more to do more with. Again, not envious, but id like to feel like we had more freedom to do things if we wanted to.
So far this hasn’t been anything more or less than what i expected, we are in a conservative rebuild mode and we are making conservative rebuild mode moves lol., aka none. I have a feeling we sign a few people and they wont be splashy moves, but i just hope they add something to our team and help us establish the foundation we so desperately need.
Those guarantees for a RB are huge. The contract per year average isnt nearly as big as the 35 in guarantees. I can see why it looks wierd that he turned one thing down for the other but thats a nice contract for a RB.

Talk about Spin. Schefter said that despite all the information that was out there about the Ravens and the Jets were the last two trying to outbid one another for Bell, the Ravens actually never made an offer at all of him. Sounds like agent shenanigans to me.
Apparently there are incentives in Bell’s contract too that could make it up to a 61mil deal.
Apparntly Rosenhaus represents both Perriman and Odell Beckham and one of the trade was that the contract they had already verbally agreed to with Breshad Perriman would be voided. So Perriman had to make other arrangements because of Beckham being signed.
I get we need a bowling ball RB, but if that’s all he is, then when he is in there, it’s too predictible.
I like Henderson because he is fast enough 4.49 40 to go all the way if he busts loose, but he is strong 22 reps and stocky 5’9 208 to take punishment but able to hide in the mess like Gore did.
He can catch too, so we could deke the dive and flare him out in the flat.

D, I wanted Henderson over Snell because I thought we would be able to bring Bolden back which would give us 2 big backs. Not the case anymore. We will have to see what happens around our 5th or 6th pick which is my preference to take a RB. I would like to go 2 DL and 2 OL or 1 QB, 1 DL and 2 OL with our first 4 picks.
Naples, I so agree on Henderson. His field vision is off the charts as well. That is a big factor in his ability to take it to the house along with great balance, speed and quick moves to get defenders off balance and enough power to run through arm tackles. He is also a fantastic receiver.
I agree that Henderson is talented, but i disagree that Snell is predictable that he is a bowling ball only and thats what he would be when he was in there. Snell is a violent runner, he just adds a toughness to our running game, but he is a really capable blocker and he has good speed for outside rushing. He would also help us have a good 2 back set, where we could use him on straight dive plays or as a lead blocker out of the same formation.
Naples, go watch some vids of Snell i promise you will come away impressed.

I’m watching Kyler Murray’s pro day. He honestly looks thick enough to play in the NFL. He doesn’t look at all like a thin fragile guy, although he’s definitely a little softer in the middle (belly) than he probably is normally due to his weight gain. He has a thick lower body, and is developed well enough in his upper body. I bet when he’s in his best shape though he’s under 200 lbs. It probably doesn’t matter much either way.

He will require us to commit to a very specific style on offense an that doesnt match up at all with what we have been hearing about what te coaches want to do. I dont think they want a QB that has to have his playstyle catered to, to a guy who will dictate the offense, but rather with a guy who is going to fit what they want and be developed into someone that can run THEIR offense. I dont think Murray is that guy. If i were Arizona, though, and thats an offensive scheme im already considering, he might definately be on my radar, and i might even be inclined to take him number 1 overall.
Again, not judging him on stature, we have seen people get past that. Not judging him on the combine antics, though i cant say that helps me value him more. Not judging him on his ability to play the game, his way, he seems to be able to make plays if the offense is made for his style. He can be successful in the NFL i think, i just dont think he matches for us, period.
I don’t want Murray, I want Haskins, or a trade for Rosen. Much more for Haskins, but getting Rosen would at least be a start

All I can say is that I can see clearly that Ozzie has left the building. I don’t understand what the vision is for the Ravens going forward, based on their decision-making thus far. It’s going to be interesting to see how they fare.
Tanny is a waste here, wasted cap space for our team and a waste for progress of the team. Why run a guy out there every play when he is not going to be around any longer. You aren’t helping him and you aren’t helping the team neither short run or long run. Tanny is wasting his time here as well. Im not a fan of the classic movies, ill start with that. I appreciate the cinematic quality of it, i appreciate the script, etc, but the romantic sequences are so over the top sappy to me i wanna puke. There are a lot of drama i feel that way about so maybe i just like my movies to be more salty than syrupy sweet. I watched it all the way through once, its just not my cup of team, but i see why they study it in movie classes, etc.
I don’t how it’s so sappy sweet, as the hero did not get the girl, so there is no happy ending, which makes it so much more realistic than those Hallmark formula movies, or even “Sleepless in Seattle” type puke-worthy romcoms.
Plus the setting is extremely not mainstream, and several important characters are killed, so there’s no guaranteed flow through to the epilogue.
The Nazis are menacing and murderous of innocent people but unsuccessful in achieveing their goals, which is historically accurate.
The girl is forced to choose between living and love, which is a psyche-jarring internal conflict. Bogart plays it laconic and terse, doesn’t cry over losing his true love or do anything schmaltzy-stupid like getting into a shootout with the Nazis, which if he won would be totally unbelievable and if he lost would be a tear-jerker of the type you castigate.
I like the movie more for its parts than the sum of its parts, e.g. I’m glad there was no melodramatic car chase scene to get to the airport, and the sly compromise between Rick and his smarmy adversary at the end is a very clever denouement.
Plus there’s no resolution because well, War is Hell and Life’s a bitch and then you die.
So apropos of post-modernism.

Two differences are, I like It’s a Wonderful Life, and I didn’t like The Maltese Falcon, which surprised me as I love noir. Actually the only Bogart movie I really like is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

GWTW is nothing short of epic as a metaphor and a compendium of the devastation to the status quo ante bellum in the Old South versus the New Reality of state-imposed social engineering. It showed catastrophic annihilation on a human scale and to the physical infrastructure, including economic ruin, and how all that was key to engendering political allegiances with legacies into the late 1980s.
There are lessons to be learned from that movie that bleeding heart Democrats need to heed.
However, Scarlett sacrificed her own romantic happiness to stubbornly cling to a moribund caste philosophy, but then showed the resilience to reinvent herself vis a vis the exigencies of Reconstruction. The New South thus arose in Atlanta which led to the acceptance of Black people as viable constituents and set the stage for modern civil rights and opportunity for all of our people.
I know the stories are more significant than just love stories, but the theme that really resonates to me as far as the hook for that movie is the romantic aspects of it. The historical significant and the ethical and sociological messages it was delivering were to be there and digested without detracting from the movie’s entertainment value. I appreciate that about older films. We have a lot today that the agenda pushed by the studious completely detracts from the movie. One right now thats is being ruined by all that is Captain Marvel which is so injected with political rhetoric its hardly enjoyable by most that really loved the comics.

James Stewart is probably my favorite old time actor. He was just so compelling on screen. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is probably my favorite classic movie. Doesn’t hurt that The Duke and Lee Marvin were in that one too. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is another good one, and of course Stewart’s Hitchcock movies.
I agree he is definately at the top of my Actors list.

I love dirty Dozn, abut my favorite Lee Marvin movie, and oen of my favorite Eastwood movies is “paint your Wagon” which is a musical. Its so crszy seeing both those guys in a musical and comedic roles.
Loved the Dirty Dozen. I was pleasantly surprised to see it show up on Netflix last month, so I watched it againrecently. It still pisses me off that Posey didn’t get an on screen death, lol.

I have a hard time watching old time movies like Casblanca. One of my favorite movies of all time is pretty old though. “To Sir With Love” with Sidney Poitier. I still get all choked up at the end no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
The one that gets me the hardest every time i watch it is “Field of Dreams” i cry at the end every time. I havent even attempted to watch it since my Dad passed. Still working my way up to trying that.
Poitier is a fave actor of mine.
I also liked “Lilies of the Field.”
I like Poitier a lot too. I dont remember to Sir with Love, i probably have seen it since i grew up with parents that loved classic movies.

Marvin was like John Wayne, i dont think there was a western or War moive he wasnt perfect for. Thats why i like “Paint your Wagon” so much, set in western times but completely uncharacteristic for he or Eastwood.

I don’t even slightly like that actor.
That part where he comes to grips and gets closure for pushing his dad away when he was being rebellious just gets me. Its like the epitome of that statment make sure your loved ones know they are loved before its too late, and that regret after they are gone. Thats what the movie was all about, he thought he was building the baseball field for those players to have closer, but the field was really about him getting closure with his father for turning his back on him. I think its pretty profound.
D – Was that a movie you and your dad watched together annually or something?
No its just a profound movie about the relationship between a boy and his father and how that changes after a boy becomes and man and a father, and now can see the love the father had for them. Its just triggers what i feel for my dad and a lot of the things that i knew i was going to miss when he was gone.

Always liked To Sir with love too. It was the blueprint for a ton of similar movies, but none of them match the original.
Ill have to go find it on Netflix or Amazon and watch it again. I swear i know what movie that was but i cant 100% place it.

For those of you that haven’t seen “Paint your Wagon”, watch it, its funny as hell and you will be shocked by Eastwoods signing voice. This was back during the years he was on Rawhide….if you are interested in seeing Eastwood when he looked like a teeny bopper you should watch that series. Seriously i couldn’t believe that was him he looked so young.

Kong – I also found it to be a an acceptance of race differences movie. I think in my heart that’s what I found most touching about the movie. No question he was a straight up guy and the kids were a little wild and had behavioral issues, but I think there was definitely a black and white issue too
Definately an acceptance movie as the black white issue was a “black man in charge” issue, which was a wall that had to be tore down.
It has been many, many years since I’ve seen it. It was based in England, which didn’t have quite the same race issue we had here, and I don’t remember that element. It’s likely I was just too young to have recognized it.
Just to clarify, I’m not even remotely disagreeing, I just don’t remember it. As I said, it’s been years.

Definitely an iconic voice. The only actor I can think of that had basically the same voice, and I dug him as Curly Bill in Tombstone, would be Powers Boothe.
Eastwood has a super iconic voice for me. But i agree with you, Powers Boothe i more recognize him by voice than face.
I liked that whole cast of Tombstone, they made the movie entertaining, gave t some flair, but they really portrayed those characters too goody goody. Earp was supposedly as much like a criminal as a law man, Doc Holiday was said to be a cold blooded killer, Tombstone romanticized the characters too much to be historically accurate. They made a good movie though.
Pretty much all of the western history shown in movies is made up. I’ve read a number of books on the actual history of these guys. I think Doc Holiday and Billy the Kid are considered two of the biggest fictions of them all. If memory serves, Doc Holliday actual only has one or two confirmed kills, and was only involved in two or three fracases.
The most prolific old west killer of all time, nobody has ever even heard of, Killing Jim Miller.
One guy whos legend isn’t entirely made up is Wild Bill Hickok .

If we get Bridgewater it better be for a show me contract, or at least something that says, we haven’t settled on you as our starter but we will pay you like one if you get there. Maybe put some incentives in there to make it a bigger contract if he impresses. Anything north of 10mil per is going to be too much IMO, id prefer something in the 7-8 range.

I think the appeal to him would be the opportunity to show he can start and be successful that would get him to that big contract rather than ride the bench in NOLA.

Teddy B got 5 mil to be the backup in NO last year. 7-8mil to be our starter on a 2 year contract would give him a better pay than he probably was gonna get from NO, and though he would be on the high end range of a backup, it wouldnt be rediculous if we wound up moving him to that kind of role. In two years if he is still our best starting option we extend him and pay him real starter money.
