2019 Miami Dolphins – Behind the curve, but finally breaking away from mediocrity – “Staying the course”

I watch free agency with no real regrets or jealousy to what other teams are accomplishing. Teams are spending record amounts of money on salaries as it usually goes. Players aren’t better than they used to be, there’s just more cap space available and players are demanding more. Crazy trades are happening as well, and I’m actually happy for the Cleveland Browns. They have some great fans in Cleveland, they deserve this. I think back to 1995 when Art Modell decided to move the Browns to Baltimore and created the new franchise the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland Browns fans had to wait 4 years to have football back as they created the new Cleveland Browns expansion team. Yeah, they deserve some good things so best of luck to them.

At the moment, just by virtue of talent we are the bottom feeders of our division. We’re following a strict plan and I’m very thankful that they haven’t blinked yet. The lone addition we have made is bringing in 29 year old TE Dwayne Allen, primarily a blocking TE. We let our young starting RT leave for greener pastures in Denver. We didn’t even try to stop Cam Wake from going to Tennessee. No effort was made to keep Frank Gore here. There are a number of veteran players that likely will be cut yet still remain. They remain because the team would prefer to extract some value in a trade, and trades are happening wildly all throughout the NFL. Robert Quinn, Josh Sitton, Ryan Tannehill, Kenny Stills and Reshad Jones all still remain, and some may end up being here for part or all of the 2019 season if a trade isn’t accomplished.

The key point is the mission seems to be clear. We’re clearing out the roster and preparing for a new direction. Not surprising, we’ve being doing a version of this what seems like every 3 years or so as we change coaching staffs, but this one is different. Not because of Brian Flores, this is more about Chris Grier, and maybe to some degree Steve Ross. They’re tired of treading water and I’m tired of watching them do it. Clearing the roster and then signing big money free agents is a contradiction. Clearing the roster says we’re starting anew, and then reaching for a star player with big $$$ attached who can help you win now but not later is completely at odds. Give Grier credit, he’s following through with his mission, and is staying the course.

The Dolphins did make one recent signing and I like it. DeVante Parker wanted to stay here, and the Miami Dolphins gave him yet another chance to fulfill his potential. The basic parameters are 2 years at $10M, with potentially as much as $13M if performance incentives are reached. Considering the 5th YR option was for $9.4M all guaranteed, this is a win. None of the 2nd year is guaranteed. This is an opportunity for Parker to do what we all thought he was capable of doing. Will he do it? It doesn’t matter, it was a good signing. Low risk, high reward, and that’s the right way to do it. It won’t be like this forever, but for this season and maybe next, the key to the vault has been thrown away.

There will be rough times ahead mateys, so batten down the hatches. Ryan Tannehill is still the QB and we basically have one good OL to count on (Laremy Tunsil). We need help in the trenches on both sides of the ball and although we were in it for Trey Flowers for about 5 minutes, he eventually went to the Lions for 5 years $90M. Crazy! The Jets have added some serious talent to build around their young QB Sam Darnold. LB C.J. Mosley signed for 5YR/$85M and then just last night Le’Veon Bell signed for 4YR/$52M. The Jets also added slot WR Jamison Crowder, but they did lose out on LB Anthony Barr who left the Jets at the hangar as he ended up staying home with the Vikes.

There are still a couple of things that have great interest to me that have yet to shake out. The Arizona Cardinals are purportedly going to take QB Kyler Murray at #1 in the 2019 Draft. That doesn’t mean they have to trade Josh Rosen, but it’s pretty likely they will to get back some value. How much compensation it will take to procure Rosen is up in the air. The compensation is whatever a team is willing to pay, and we all know that can get crazy. Some think a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick might get it done, but it could end up being a 1st RD pick and more. I would be very interested in Josh Rosen for a 3rd RD pick, and even up to a 2nd RD pick. I think that’s where I would cut it off. I’ve already explained here that he was on a terrible team with a coach that was fired after 1 season. We need talent at the QB position, and I don’t think we’re going to have a shot at Dwayne Haskins at #13, and I refuse to trade up. Destroying all our draft capital for one pick is also not part of rebuilding. Stay the course.

So as we currently stand, we are the worst team in the AFC East, and it’s OK. Not because we’re “tanking”, that’s ridiculous. We’re rebuilding. We’re not mandating to our players to lose, we’re just changing over the roster and not making any “win now” moves. I still think Ryan Tannehill and Robert Quinn will be gone soon. I also think it’s still possible that the Dolphins trade Reshad Jones, but less so than I used to. We just signed CB Eric Rowe who was with the Eagles and Patriots to a one year deal. Rowe has only played 12 games the last 2 seasons due to groin injuries. I remember Rowe well, he was a combine MONSTER. at 6’1 205, Rowe ran a 4.45 40, put up 19 reps, 39″ vertical, 125″ broad jump, 6.7 3 cone, 3.97 20 YD shuttle, ALL in the top performers category. This kid is a quick twitch athlete and an exciting athletic talent and at $3.5M, it’s another low risk, high reward signing.

Hang in there Dolphins fans, we’re finally doing it right. It may be painful in the short term, but it will pay off long term If you’ve been miserable with 6-10, 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 and once in a blue moon 10-6, this is the way to end all that. Be patient, because this year will hurt. We may not be very good, and the other teams in our division have made substantial gains. One step back, two steps forward.

That would be a great gig for Tannehill.
He could hold the clipboard for a couple years behind the Greatness that is Brees and learn how to play QB .

Then when Drew retires, Ryan could take over and resume his career at only like 32-33 years old.

Saints can have Tannehill for a 6th RD pick, or Ted Ginn Jr. and his family. lol

  10. we’re not even close to a 90 man roster but with every signing someone see’s it as a sign that some player will be let go.

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  16. PFT: Saints source on the possibility of signing Ryan Tannehill. “no way”

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bridgewater is probably trying to get a better feel for what Miami’s plans are at QB. He signs with us, he’s the projected starter then we draft a QB and midway through the season if we’re not winning we decide to go with the young QB and now he’s a backup on a sub par or bad team. I understand him being cautious and wanting more of a commitment.

Not only is he a solid bridge QB but who knows maybe he becomes the long-term QB. It’s possible. It was a horrific injury that set his career back and the fact that he made it back into the league is impressive.

  18. Conflicting reports on Bridgewater. One says he was offered 1 yr, $7M from the Saints and 2 yr, $10M from Miami that he declined and PFT says that he’s not comfortable with the situation in NOLA because Peyton may end up in Dallas next yr and won’t be able to guarantee him to be Brees successor.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see people are still acting like Jeff Ireland is the GM of the Saints. He’s the Assistant General Manager/College Scouting Director. I’m sure Mickey Loomis Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Saints has some say in all of this. LOL

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another funny thing that’s a big deal for some reason this year is whenever a team signs a player they say that signing probably just cost that team a 3rd rd compensatory pick next year. It’s really a 4th rd pick because it’s after 32 picks in the 3rd rd. As if those 3rd rd comp picks are gold now. LOL

  21. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

I hope we sign Teddy Bridgewater. He will be a great backup to Tanny for the next 2 years. Son will be stoked 😁

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  23. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Bridgewater…meh. I don’t see him as a long term solution. He didn’t do anything special in Minnesota

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

He was pretty good until he almost lost his leg.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He was okay. I recall Minnesota was not sold on him at the point he got hurt. He was a caretaker QB who would hand the ball off to AP

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He was just getting started. He only played two seasons before his injury. I’m not saying he’ll be great or elite but it’s not like he had a giant body of work either. The fact that he worked his way back into the league after an injury where he almost had his leg amputated tells you a lot about the guy.

  24. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Why bother with Bridgewater?

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

LOL the majority on this board is so desperate to love a QB, ANY QB, even those who have shown to be less than what we have had.

Can’t wait until Ray Lucas brings us to the promised land! SMH

  26. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have nothing against Bridgewater. I like the kid but I think the people who believe he will be an upgrade over Tannehill will be disappointed

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Same. Just cheaper. I’d rather throw out the young kids and maybe get lucky with one. And once again, arent we supposed to be losing this year?

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

I said he would be a great backup to Tanny.. PFFFT !!! 😎👍 Oh and for the next two years in case Tanny’s pussy gets hurt.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not saying that. I just think it’s time to move on from Tannehill. This team needs a new start. Lots of people on this board have screamed blow it up but they can’t really get behind it. LOL

This is early on in year one of the transition process and already everyone is backing off acting like if we don’t have this or that we can’t win. Bridgewater would be a solid bridge QB (love using that phrase with him) who could end up being the guy. If not we’ll keep searching. No harm no foul. The new coaches can’t get their program going with a team of borderline NFL talent.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was fine not signing any QB and just rolling with Falk, Rudock and the QB we draft. I said that plenty of times already. I’m still interested in Rosen, not as a savior, but as an upgrade of the QB depth chart

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I would be okay with that plan

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Depends on compensation for Rosen. Didnt like him coming out last year. But rookie deal with cheap compensation would be worth a shot. But his injury body would quickly be destroyed here….

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

I agree Mike E. Rosen will be a great backup for Tanny for the next two years. But I would only give up a 4th for him just in case Tanny’s pussy gets hurt 😎👍

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s an option too but people tend to forget that the other 52 players are competing to prove themselves and increase their livelihoods. Tanking is the worst approach in competitive sports. It’s an oxymoron. I find it totally disrespectful.

Mike, I know you’re not saying that but it’s clear the new regime is not looking to be a shit show. They’re just not throwing money all over the place in 2019 which is a good thing.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It worked pretty good for the Colts

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Colts had nothing left. We have more talent than they did sans Peyton who went down. You want Minkah or Howard to drop the INT? McMillan and Baker to hold off getting better? Tunsil not trying to be an elite pro bowl LT? Trying to sign Bridgewater tells me that’s not the plan and makes me happy. Build your team and compete. Playing smart, hard and competitive is a big part of rebuilding a good team – not some future golden boy who could bust. Yeah that’s never happened. Everyone knows we’re not winning a Super Bowl. But we’re not trying to be the worst team either.

And I beat you to Bridgewater two months BEFORE you! 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But that was when the Tanne-lovers were still reflecting on his ’16 campaign…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really don’t remember that. I remember us agreeing on him a month or so ago. I went to the UFA list at one point and he jumped out at me. Nobody influenced me about him. He stood out. Jets/Vikings/Saints showed me he was healthy. He’s still young, a former 1st rd pick just 5 years ago, and showed promise. Him overcoming that injury is very impressive to me. Now there is a battle between us and the Saints for his services.

Side Bar: You always want to tank when you compete for a QB in FA. 😉

  30. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

that was two third round picks and a 4th. not a 4th 5th & 6th. But if you’re talking about the “order of importance” I was filling needs at the value of the board.

  31. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Tim:
I agree with the idea that Bridgewater would be a “bridge “ QB but I think some other people here have other ideas

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What do you mean? I like Glennon too. We need someone with some starting experience and Fales isn’t what I mean. You get nothing accomplished if the QBs you have are incompetent. Rudock and Faulk have never started a pro game. I’ve been on board with that approach along with a rookie. But I think we need a vet in the mix. Then let them compete and see what it is.

Imagine me talking like a bullfrog with a Russian falsetto voice!?!?
REASON#2: We are busier at work than we’ve been at any time in the last 10 years! It’s kinda like 29 people all show up at Piggy’s law office and they all need him NOW!! Of course, if they are all Dolphin cheerleaders . . . -Anyway, I’m BUSY!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E.: Thanks for trying to put a positive spin on a horrid football team. MY SPIN remains the same. To wit, the Dolphins will never make it to the Super Bowl as long as Little Stevie Blunder is calling the shots. The Dolphins biggest need isn’t at QB, the O-Line or the D-Line. It’s at the OWNER’s position. Ross has proven beyond a doubt that he’s incapable of choosing the right people and the right plan to succeed in the NFL. Maybe we need an owner who talks like a bullfrog with a Russian accent??

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rosen might be better than Tannehill too. Who knows?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s not what I said. I was referring to Tanking for Tua. If you rebuild your team and coach them with the idea it’s all about one guy in college next year – how the fuck do you communicate with and earn the respect of the players actually on your team?

The other point was if you do that and “Tua tanks” great job, now you’ve set yourself back another 2-3 years, because everything was setup for him. Dumb!

  38. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

If TB is there for the right price with a chance to be a starter and a pro bowl qb again, why not pull the trigger and see what happens. He might give a home town discount to get his career back on track.

I would think RT and his salary/cap mean “dead man walking” or Dolphin QB in this case is part of “stay the course” plan. It’s time to move on.

  39. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

If Tyree can unseat Faulk or Rudock as a 4th rounder I’d be good with that. We need Oline and pass rush this year badly. Build the trenches now on both sides.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Yes

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. My preference is a QB like Bridgewater with experience, Tyree, Rudock and Falk and find out who belongs and who doesn’t. Dak Prescott was a 4th rd pick. He’s not elite but with a good team around him Dallas can be in the mix. It doesn’t always have to be 1st round.

This is year one of the rebuild and we’re all freaking out about finding the elite QB. Who? LOL

Bridgewater had some ups and downs in MN. He showed some potential but warts as well. I don’t really see him as an upgrade over Tanny. But, you can say he MIGHT have more upside simply because of his limited playing time thus far. I don’t see him as a long term answer at QB. But, I don’t see anything wrong with bringing him in and seeing what happens. If he can be signed for a decent contract, you take a chance and hope it pays off. If it doesn’t, you move on.

  44. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

No one they bring in is anything but competition at this point. If they draft a 1st round QB, if they add Teddy B if they trade for Rosen if they do a combination of those or none of those, the QB they pick might be someone they could see as our future starter but ultimately they won’t know until they come in and take it. No e of the can be expected to be better than Tanny until they prove they are and none of them can’t be better because we won’t be bringing them in to compete of we don’t think they can. I’m sure they have an idea of how they think it will go, but no one really knows until it is or isn’t. 2020 class will be no different and there are no guarantees we will even get a chance at one of them anyways. We need to be trying to find that guy until we find him and we need to fine the next man up after that until we find him

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How do we go from 50 something players to 90 for training camp? FA just started, the draft and UDFAs.

I bought you a ten dollar dinner you said thanks for the snack
Let you live in my Penthouse lord you called it a shack

Been down hearted baby, ever since the day that we met, our QB gives us nothing but the blues

Maybe we’re playing a waiting game with Teddy, see if he comes down in price. OR, maybe we don’t really want Teddy that badly

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s possible Sonny but like I said, if he doesn’t want to start, I don’t want him anyway. Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti said the same thing this morning. “How could he not want to start, even if the Dolphins are terrible, why would he go back to NO and hold to be the backup?”

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He’s like, did you see how fucked up my leg was? I don’t want to play but I still want to get payed

Maybe Grier isn’t a closer. Wouldn’t that be some shit.

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

MLB agrees to have only 1 trade deadline, July 31st. No trades beyond that

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – You may be right on the money with that. Safer to hold a clipboard

  58. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as far as the QB position is concerned we’d be better off to wait until next year or the year after to land our franchise guy, the thing is if you draft him this year and the team sucks anyway due to other positions that’s a year closer to when you have to pay him big $$ if he turns out to be your franchise guy, if you wait and build the team in other areas then bring him in you will have 4 to 5 years to spend money in other areas before your QB hits the big $$$

  59. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

McKenzie Milton had a similar injury where the blood flow was cut off to the lower leg requiring emergency surgery to restore blood flow.

  60. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i don’t think bridgewater wants to hold a clip board, the reason he may have said he was going back to the saints to be a back up most certainly may have been because miami low balled him, it was about finances not that he doesn’t want to start.
i think miami is offering 7 mil and he probably wants about 15 mil.

    just my opinion though.

  61. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

veteran qb starter money on avg is 16 mil per year.

  62. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

paying 15 mil and getting hit with tannys dead money is a problem for miami, i think they should just stay in house with what we got, it’s not like bridgewater is the final piece to a 2019 championship run, staying in house may insure a better draft status in 2020 when we go after our franchise guy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t understand that logic. We’re paying him $26.6M if he stays, or only $13.4M if he goes. Who cares about the dead cap, I honestly don’t want to see him here as our QB. Give me something new, anyone. I’m still interested in Rosen and I don’t care if he’s the starter or not. Bring him in and see what he’s got, along with the other 2 QB’s we have. Maybe you get surprised. Tannehill is old hat, we know what he is and I’ve seen enough!

  63. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

miami has said they have interest in Tua, my concern with him is he looks great but most of the time he’s playing behind a dominant team in every aspect over their competition. what happens when he hits the pros and the all around comp is better or at least equal?

  64. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Miami doesn’t need the extra cap space cutting RT would create. Not this year. May as well keep him and start drafting QBs. Gives them the rest of this season and the beginning of next to work a trade and get something for him. Makes no sense to sign a FA QB as a caretaker when you already have one. They shouldn’t care what we stupid fans like or don’t like.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, they may not need the extra space but they need to wash off the stench of him being here. End it already dammit! He’s a swell guy, but he’d be better off on another team anyway.

  66. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

To me it looks as simple as we had a value set for Bridgewater, and he wants more to come here. It’s not like he is the missing piece to get us over the hump or some irreplaceable commodity.

  67. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Traditionalists may disagree, but I’m liking the proposed changes in baseball. My problem with the game is all the downtime. I’ll likely watch more if they shorten the game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think I’m more of a traditionalist but I’m OK with everything they have proposed except for the pitch clock. I think it would better to just enforce that a batter stay in the box after each pitch, unless he fouls it off. Why they need a myriad of adjustments after a pitched ball they didn’t even offer at is ridiculous. Bad habits that just waste time. Stay in the damn box! I don’t see that many pitchers really slowing down the game, it’s the batters.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In addition, I don’t love the idea of the NL adopting the DH but it’s coming whether I like it or not, so I better get used to it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I almost mentioned the same thing regarding the pitch clock. I want them to shorten the game, but NO on the pitch clock. I’m right with you on the NL DH too. I like that there are a couple of differences between the leagues like DH. I think it makes for a more interesting WS.

Sounds D’s to me like we aren’t on the same page with Teddy B. I don’t know if it’s assurances about being the starter or that we won’t be drafting a guy or money, but leaving without a contract makes me feel he isn’t going to be in Miami next year

Sucks that we even made the trade for Quinn. We could have had DE Dorance Armstrong from Kansas with that pick (#111) that we traded to the Rams.

Armstrong bends every bit as well as Quinn and they are nearly identical in size and weight.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  76. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOVED Dorance Armstrong! Just had to refresh my memory, and it served me well. He had a couple of sacks on Patrick Mahomes in one game, and sacked Baker Mayfield in another. He can bend the edge, he’s FAST, and as you’ll hear the announcers say time and again, he’s going to be really good on the next level.

Wake’s contract is front-loaded like crazy, making it very easy for the Titans to cut him after this year.

Hmm … Sorry sir but what has Tannehill done compared to Robert Quinn? A solidified pass rusher that plays the right side. For the ppl that don’t know ( that’s the best OT’s on the offensive line ). Don’t disrespect Quinn like that sir!
