Rebuild makes serious progress as Dolphins trade Ryan Tannehill, sign Ryan Fitzpatrick #staythecourse

Well, out with the old, in with the older. The Dolphins traded QB Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans and our 2019 6th RD (#188) pick as well as paying $5M of Ryan Tannehill’s $7M 2019 salary in exchange for the Titans 2019 7th RD pick (#234), and the biggest part of the trade, a 2020 4th RD pick. In addition to the Tannehill trade, the Dolphins signed veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to a 2 year $11M deal, but with performance incentives met (they won’t!) could boost the deal to between $17-20M.

I remember driving home from work the night of the 2012 NFL Draft. It was Thursday April 26th, I worked until 9PM and I was racing home from work that night, desperately trying to make it home to watch us make our selection at #8. It didn’t happen. I was close, less than a half mile away when my cell phone rings (hands free for you law enforcement type) and it’s Walker on the other end. Walker says in his lovable southern drawl “Mike E, we got a QB!” I can actually feel the excitement still, the hope of a young QB, it brings so much promise. Unfortunately for both us and for Ryan, things never quite happened as they were supposed to, and the Tannehill era ended 3/15/19 with the trade to the Titans.

In 2016, Ryan Tannehill had his best stretch as a Miami Dolphin. After losing 4 of the first 5 games, at 104, Miami rode the J-Train (Jay Ajayi), and that threat of a legitimate run game opened up the offense, and the ball control rejuvenated the defense. The Dolphins went on to win 7 of the next 8 games with Ryan Tannehill until the fateful knee injury ended his season against the Arizona Cardinals. You know the rest, Matt Moore finished the season 2-1, beating the Jets and Bills, but losing the final game of the season to the Patriots. In the playoffs, we were no match for the Steelers as we were drubbed 30-12 in a non competitive game. Could Ryan Tannehill have done better? We’ll never know.

The Dolphins signing an older vet QB like Fitzpatrick means a couple of things. Fitz is not a long term answer so the Dolphins are still looking for young QB talent. S Minkah Fitzpatrick will have to put an “M.” before his shared last name of Fitzpatrick on his jersey for ’19. Fitzpatrick is a capable QB, but has been a rollercoaster the last couple of years. He started last season hot throwing 8 TD’s to 1 INT in his first 2 games for the Bucs. It all leveled out as Fitz finished the season throwing 17 TD’s and 12 INT’s after the 8:1 ratio in games 1 and 2. He’s really good and really bad. That’s how he’s been. He loves to sling it, and I’d be lying if I said that won’t be a welcome change to our controlled offense of throwing in a 5 yard radius 98% of the time with Tannehill and Gase.

I think the Dolphins will take a QB in this draft, but not necessarily in RD1, unless the right guy just happens to fall to us at #13. We won’t be trading up, which makes it difficult, but we just need to improve the young talent depth at QB. If we felt either Rudock or Falk were the real deal we probably don’t bother picking up Fitzpatrick. Whether Haskins, Lock or Jones are a guy we target, we’ll see in a few weeks. I’m excited that we’re on the right track, and each move we make cements it in that the rebuild is legitimate, and things will get better, but again, for the short term they just might get worse.

At this point the only thing i really want to see is us add talent that helps us, without sacrificing other picks to do so. We need to get the best available and not look to trade up for anyone. If there is a QB they like at 13, great, take him, if not then either select someone else or if there is enough talent left, trade back if you have the opportunity to. Do that with all of our picks this year, and then next year hopefully we are in a better spot to consider a trade up for a player thats a must have, Im never a fan of trade up but sometimes you just have to to get your guy, i just hope they only do it from now on, IF its a cant miss guy in their opinion.

But so is your dick and you still love it right? JKBB, but seriously he is 36 this year but still played well last year. Thats why he will be a cheap add of someone that should be able to hold down the RT spot until we can get a guy to fill it that we actually sign for more than 1 year.

These are the visits that Walterfootball lists us as having made with prospects.

    Miami Dolphins
    Ben Banogu, DE/3-4OLB/OLB, TCU (COM)
Nick Bosa, DE/3-4OLB, Ohio State (COM)
Jordan Brailford, DE, Oklahoma State (EW)
    Blace Brown, CB, Troy (EW)
    L.J. Collier, DE/3-4DE, TCU (COM)
Andre Dillard, OT, Washington State (SR)
Joe Dineen Jr., ILB, Kansas (EW)
    Jalen Jelks, DE/3-4OLB/OLB, Oregon (SR)
    Daniel Jones, QB, Duke (SR)
    Tyree Kinnel, S, Michigan (EW)
    Dexter Lawrence, DT/3-4DE/NT, Clemson (COM)
    Byron Murphy, CB, Washington (COM)
    Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma (WOR)
    Ed Oliver, DT, Houston (COM)
    Charles Omenihu, DE, Texas (COM)
    Jachai Polite, DE/3-4OLB/OLB, Florida (COM)
    Riley Ridley, WR, Georgia (COM)
Brett Rypien, QB, Boise State (EW)
Montez Sweat, DE/3-4OLB/OLB, Mississippi State (COM)
Sione Takitaki, OLB, Brigham Young (EW)
    Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida (COM)
    Armon Watts, DE, Arkansas (EW)
    Greedy Williams, CB, LSU (COM)

Of course this isnt a full list, i see some misses from this list myself and some people we have met with more than once, like Sweat who we also met with at Senior Bowl.

The list those does show that we look like we are scouting out DE/DT in the 1-3 round ranges, DE we brought in some later round ones too, so maybe they feel “Ok” at DE and are making sure they have a range of picks, or they plan on doubling up. DT they seem like they are interested in making it a priority.

They also look to be making DE/3-4 OLB a priority, several hybrid players from the first, and early second round listed there.

Looks like they have QB set as a priority too, with a backup plan to still select a player if they miss out, but they have visited pretty much with ever first round graded guy. They also have some 2nd round graded peeps and some day 3 peeps, so i think their plan is to get a guy they like in whatever round they feel is appropriate, without having to overdraft (by their standards) or trade up.

I think they have some interest in adding talent at DB, specifically CB, but also S, though i think they would only take a CB early IF they didnt have a QB, or DE/OLB or DT they didnt like better. They have some later round DB that they have met with. The guy from Troy is a pretty talented player but from a small school so he probably will be a value pick if they can get him.

I think similar things can be said about the WR position. They have met with some value pickguys. Ridley might be a really good player and i know they met with Renfrow as well, so im thinking they are targeting them in the 4-7th round.

We will know more when we start bribing guys in on team facility visits or having private workouts at Pro-Days. Grier has been a part of these with us for a while and our pattern historically has been that we select people from the list of people we bring in. We have got people before we didn’t bring in, but in those cases we were concerned the player would be selected before we could get to them so we hit our interest. That has been the exception to haow we have handled things int he past, so it will be interesting to see whom we bring in for that.

Reminder: he rushed for 1,042 yards last year with the ‘Skins.

    Unbelievable story, here!

  28. D's avatar D says:

So i just found a site that mines other mock sites and gives you in percentages what everyone thinks is goine to happen for the different teams, and right now we are ll over the place lol. They have us as in the top 4 of teams that are going to prioritize QB high, with the Bengals maybe pushing us to 5th as the dont have QB among the top of thier list, but its in the middle of their list.

They have Arizona 83% to take a QB and that QB is Murray. They have NYG as 72% likely to take a QB, that QB being Dwayne Haskins. They have Denver Broncos as 47% likely to take a QB and that QB is Drew Lock, and then they have us at 16% to take a QB, that QB also being Lock.

So lets say those are good numbers and that means Murray goes number 1, Haskins number 6, and Lock number 10. That would leave us Daniel Jones, as a possible selection, and i for one would make that pick. The metrics though said we would be roughly as likely to select an OL, Williams or Ford as a QB, though a slight nod to the QB position was given.

Going off their metric this is how the fors 13 picks would happen.

    Arizona: Kyler Murray
    SF: Nick Bosa
    NYJ: Quinnen Williams
    OAK: Josh Allen
    TB: Montez Sweat
    NYG: Dwayne Haskins
    JAX: Jawann Taylor
    DET: Rashan Gary
    BUF: DK Metcalf
    DEN: Drew Lock
    CIN: Devin White
    GB: TJ Hockenson
    MIA:

By position percentage, we would take Daniel Jones, but only if we liked him relatively the same amount people thing we like Drew Lock.

If you take the selection literally as if based on the player, we would take Jonah Williams as Drew Lock who is our highest percentage player selection, would be off the board, having gone to Denver so the next player on the list would be Williams.

To be more accurate, he only needs 784 rushing yards to pass Curtis Martin to become #5 on the all-time rushing list.
    ——————————————
That means he is nipping at the heels of number 4 too, since Gore just recently, passed Martin himself and he didnt tack on a lot of extra yards to pad that lead. Gore is still playing though so i hope he gets a chance (though hopefully not against us) to add to his numbers.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its basically buying picks in a way. Its clever, i hadnt thought about it but thats kind of a loophole. You basically buy a future pick using part of the cap space you wre getting back. So the end result is you still made cap space for this year, just not quite as much as next and you get a pick in 2020 to help strengthen your draft that year. Thats a pretty solid maneuver.

    • D's avatar D says:

0 tech is a disadvantage for sure, just depends on how they called the defense. If he was 0 tech but they stunted him on some plays, that might actually could have been an advantage, since they wouldnt necessarily know what side he was going to stunt.Would also be an advantage for teams that blitz alot with the MLB. To me i dont think it takes away from what ya see with the player, just shows his versatility to play whatever roles he is asked to. Id consider it a credit to him as a player.

  33. D's avatar D says:

So lets say we get 12mil back, we pay 5 mil like we did with Tanny and we get a third in return (as the article suggests) Now we have our 1st, a second, possible 3 thirds if we get a third comp pick from James. We have 2 4ths, one from the Tanny trade, and 2 5ths, if we get a 5th for Wake, or get a 6th back if the Fitz pickup hurts us a little. Thats shaping up like a draft where you can either package picks together to move up, or its going to be a draft where we really add ome talent to the team. Nice strategy.

  34. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m surprised this strategy of buying higher picks in trades isn’t used more often. Some owners are cheapskates, but some owners, like Ross, wouldn’t have a problem throwing some cash around to get better picks.

I remember the Houston trade of Ozzy to Cleveland that was basically the Browns buying a pick to take Ozzy’s salary, but I don’t really recall other instances where teams are paying a chunk of salary to get a better pick.

  35. These guys are operating on a different plane than what we’ve had in the front office in the past. We would have never seen anything like this before. They just kept restructuring guys to create cap space and thought they were geniuses.

This is the kind of out of the box thinking that says the people we’ve got handling the situation in Miami are going to take this shit to another level.

    • D's avatar D says:

Makes me wonder what the hell Grier was thinking when he would watch Mike T working deals like that and how it probably got under his skin that he coulndt really control that situation yet was somewhat guilty by association.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The best thing about all of this is they’re all on the same page from the owner right on down. Investing in draft picks to help build this team “the right way” because Ross is willing to dole out some cash shows that.

      • Exactly. You know, I keep thinking that we sit here and post mocks and post about guys we’d like in the first or second rounds or even more and when the draft comes around I think they’re going to blow our minds with what they do and we’re all going to be in shock.

Not in a bad way but in a good way.

  36. I think Ross is a smart man and he knows what’s what. You have a guy in Tannehill who was looking at a base of $18m+ this yr and it was going up the next 2 yrs. If you keep him it’s going to cost you a lot more than the $5M in bonus you just put out to get rid of him. If you cut him it saves you cap in future years and money as well but you get nothing in return. If you can trade him and get something for him in return it’s a no-brainer.

So, Ross deserves credit but I think it’s not about putting out the money as much as it is about being smarter than people think when it comes to understanding the situation.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I agree with that. If it didn’t make sense he wouldn’t do it, but the fact that he’s willing to pay the money shows he’s committed to it and whatever it takes to accomplish the goal he’ll do it.

I just hate that the media keeps using the word ‘tank’, as if we’re going to go out on Sundays and intentionally lose games. What the Colts did to get Luck was ‘tanking’. What we’re doing is a complete restructure and housecleaning so we can rebuild from the foundation up.

We know we’re going to not be a contender this year, and we’re incorporating that into our plans, but I honestly don’t see us going out each Sunday attempting to lose.

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m pretty sure Grier didn’t think what we were doing was going to work. Meaning Gase wanting anything to help him win was the priority but it didn’t work out for the foundation of the team. That said when we hired Gase the plan was to win now so you can’t really blame anyone for that even if they didn’t do it well. That’s another story. But everyone knew the approach and it didn’t work.

I think the reason Grier is the top dog GM now is because people in the building agreed with his views on things and they got in Ross’ ear.

    • It wasn’t just the way they were going about things with the players they were bringing in but also with all the restructured contracts and then the way those contracts were structured. Horrible work by whomever it was who constructed the contracts the way they did.

If we dont really find we have someone we are hot about or we think we can trade back and still get a person we are hot about, so be it, make the trade but im not a fan of trading back just to get more picks. There has to be more value in that move than there is just staying put and selecting someone.

  45. D's avatar D says:

Tanking is intentionally losing. Re-building is getting your personnel and coaching situation straightened out with no regard to wins and losses. They are different things. We still intend to play games, and put effort into strengthening our team as we go. IMO tanking would be like we were guaranteeing we would be 0-16, because i mean if you wanted to you could do that. Thats not what we are doing and thing like signing Fitz, not liquidating the whole team and bringing in players to strengthen certain areas, are not signs of tanking,. We certainly wouldn’t have re-signed Parker, we certainly wouldn’t have held out to trade tanny and eat extra cap hit this year to get it done, we definitely would have just rolled with the rookie QB’s, we definitely wouldn’t have picked up Allen, Walford, Fitz or Rowe. Its beyond stupid for Sports people to still call this a tank, because it would look WAY different if it was.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • #1 reason why it’s stupid is because how do you know how good anyone is, from coaching staff to players and people bringing in the players or doing the evaluations if you intentionally tank. you’ve got to play to win in order to evaluate what you’ve got from top to bottom. that’s why these people calling it a tank are clueless.

Those two in particular are just disgusting and im sick of hearing them talk.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’m sure they will draft the BP’sA however it may be OL and DL, not QB, and even if they do draft a qb he wont be ready for at least a year.

the tell tale sign of tanking is what they did in FA

      • to me, tanking is what we’ve been doing previously. we had a qb who couldn’t get the job done. we bring in aging veterans at rb and te and on the defensive side of the football instead of bringing in top shelf players in the draft and build a team that is a playoff contender year after year. THAT is my definition of tanking.

we’re rebuilding. we’re getting rid of all the players it makes no sense to keep because we’re better off without them and making room for players who WANT to play for us and play to win every week and aren’t just interested in a paycheck.

    • that’s just not true and it doesn’t make any sense. the upcoming draft will be a perfect example. are they going to take the best talent they can to help build this team and make it a winner or are they going to draft players that they don’t think can get the job done in order to purposely lose?

they’ll need to play these players and put them in a position to do their best in order to evaluate what they’ve got and make decisions going forward once the season ends.

and, based on that, they’ll also be able to see how well their own evaluation process worked when it came to looking at these players before the draft whether they were drafted or udfa’s.

they need to know how good the coaches are at their jobs from getting players ready to play, coaching them up, designing offensive and defensive schemes, putting players in the best position to make plays and developing the talent they’ve got to work with.

If you don’t bring in players who can help your team you’re not going to know any of that. It’s counterproductive. Tanking……….is nonsense.

  52. D's avatar D says:

    Dolphins signed OG Chris Reed.

Signed by the Jaguars as an UDFA in 2015, Reed’s logged 724 snaps at left tackle and both guard positions with Jacksonville over the last three seasons. He’ll serve as interior depth on a washed Miami O-line.
    ———————————————–
Never mind this should be counted as a depth signing, he might have been a backup at the OC position, but he filled in all along the line in his 5 years so he is a true utility depth player for us. Good, now i like this move lol

  53. D's avatar D says:

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Raiders are “doing work” on Manti Te’o, Aaron Lynch, and Vontaze Burfict.

Manti, man we should sign him. After losing Lauren as one of our players, hot SO, we need to get someone to take her place. His imaginary GF can be as hot as we can imagine her to be, so beat that shit.

  54. D's avatar D says:

I think the disconnect is that making move that need to be made to help you down the road, regardless of how that will affect you winning or losing right now is not the same thing as deliberately doing things to lose. I haven’t seen any more here where they have significantly weakened us in any area thats crucial to winning games and truthfully we aren’t done year even this year that you could judge the endgame. Tanking wouldn’t be left up to chance, if they wanted to tank, they would have everyone on board. Didnt you learn anything from the movie “Major League”!!!!

  55. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the reason you start building in the trenches is that may not make much of a difference in win loss record keeping you at the top of the daft, when you start drafting skilled players that will make a difference. you may want to wait to draft your QB as he will be on a rookie deal for 4 years which will enable you to add that savings to other positions, if you draft him right away you lose a year of that savings without any reward in the W/L record dept.

  56. drg's avatar drg says:

    D,

I’ve been a fan of what Cleveland has been doing the last few years. Look at their approach compared to Buffalo or NYJ. If your intention is to start over, why not give yourself as many assets as possible to do so? We are likely two full seasons away from contending for the playoffs IF things go well. Considering that, make all your decisions with a 2+ year timetable in mind. Fitzpatrick doesn’t help our cause. Signing guys that count against the compensatory model this year doesn’t help us. For the most part, the team is following that approach, but these half measures don’t help us in any meaningful way.

Who cares if the team or FO gets mocked for tanking. The stupid teams keep treading water and then give up way too many assets to move up in the draft if they can’t get their guy. The Rams executed this strategy well several years back. They still had to pay a price to move up for Goff, but that roster was loaded thanks to a careful multiyear plan.

The draft is and always has been a crapshoot. I’ve always been a fan of focusing on quantity of picks unless there is great value at where you are choosing. Minkah was great value and a need last season so I felt good about that pick, but we will see how the draft plays out this year.

    • D's avatar D says:

There is a big diffeence from a team who has had the number 1 pick 3 straight year and what draft capital they can get for trading that one and what we can do picking at 13. we are having to do it a year in advance by picking up future year picks and basically buying them. Browns also have had to suffer through being the worst damn team in all of the NFL for multiple years to get there. We are doing more of the Patriot way, except we arent established enough to do it right, thats why we are getting into position for 2020 more so than adding picks this year. Trading back is a tactic im sure we will be looking to get to, but this year isnt the one where we can or should do it. I think we are 3-4 years out for being in a good spot to start rolling the picks back like that.

      • drg's avatar drg says:

The odds of finding a great player mid first are basically the same as late first or even second round. No better time than the present to start the process, IMO. We will likely have a top 5 pick next season and focus on a franchise QB, but if the guy they love isn’t there keep trading down.

We’ve done the mediocrity thing for 20 years now. Time to try a different approach.

      • this team isn’t picking top 5 next yr. coaching, alone, is going to make a huge difference.

    • I don’t think we can give either the Browns or the Rams credit for achieving anything at this point because the results are not conclusive. The Browns have a good looking team on paper but we’ve yet to see the results. The Rams made it to the SB but there’s no guarantee where they end up this year.

Rams could end up missing the playoffs this year, then what? Browns could have their best season in franchise history this year but even that doesn’t matter if there is no sustainability.

So, we can look at this “tanking” thing as a model of success but there’s nothing there yet to say it definitely works.

Me? I’d rather see what our coaching staff is capable of. Either you can coach or you can’t. Come to think of it, that goes for player evaluation as well. You don’t see the consistently successful teams picking at the top of the draft year after year. No. They pick towards the bottom every year. But, they keep getting it right.

Teams that know how to put a coaching staff together and get the right talent are the ones who do it every year. I want us to be a team like that. Tanking is for losers.

I don’t think anyone should assume Tua will be the top QB

And I think the team and coaches will set the tone to compete each game

They just aren’t going to hurt themselves in 2020 and beyond by spending in 2019

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think you can count on anything 2 years in advance. Its hard enough to predict the draft when you already know who has declared. How it unfolds takes odd twists and turns. Add in predicting a player entering the draft when he doesnt have to, predicting a player’s health through an entire upcoming college season, etc. I just dont know, thats too manyvariables for me. If i get a chance at a here and now good thing, ill take it nd worry abotu 2020 when 2020 is here.

  58. drg's avatar drg says:

    Pig,

I’ll be watching the defense later in the season next year to get a sense for how well coached the team is. The patsies always find their stride mid season and cruise from there. They consistently have new personnel and have to figure out how to utilize them best in addition to identifying how to attack other teams.

I want the team to take an analytical approach to building this roster. Throw emotion of it and give yourselves every percent of a chance to succeed. If you do that consistently it usually pays off.

    ————-
And that is why scouts aren’t GMs.

    • yeah, it just goes to show, however, how ridiculously out of this world fans think when they make comments like “the team is waiting until next yr to draft Tua” when the team doesn’t give a shit about next yr when it’s in the middle of FA and preparing for the draft process. they want to know who the players are they should be looking at NOW. not hear about a guy who may or may not be in next year’s draft.

If you don’t love a QB in the draft this year why waste a pick on him? We are going to live or die with whoever they pick so don’t commit unless you’re convinced you have the right guy. I don’t care if it takes 3 years to finally find the right guy. As we’ve seen, you can load up a roster full of great players before committing to a QB.

And I don’t think the Browns are even close to a guarantee at this point, but they have a loaded roster now and lots of future assets. They are in as good of shape as you could hope for. I’d love the Dolphins to find themselves in a similar position three years from now.

SINCE WE GET EVERY BUCS’ GAME here in Tampa Bay, I got to see plenty Ryan Fitzpatrick last season. Early in the season, R-Fitz made great use of a splendid receiver corps. DeSean Jackson, Cameron Brate and the guy from Texas A&M (senior moment, forgot his name)–Evans–could not be covered by any of the Bucs’ first 3 foes. R-Fitz passed for over 400 yards and looked a bit like Dan Marino! Then, reality set in. Defenses adjusted. Tampa Bay had injured O-Linemen (sound familiar?). Before long, R-Fitz was riding the bench, again. –DON’T get me wrong. Behind a decent line, “Fitzmagic” can be effective. Problem is MIAMI’S O-LINE currently sucks, especially with the loss of James. SOOO, we’ve GOT to draft the best O-Lineman available in Round 1 or 2 if we are going to give our QB’s a fighting chance. —I’m so glad most of you have listened to and adopted my “O-Line First” credo I’ve been preaching for lo’ these many years. Was a nice write by Patrick. Hope some of your other folks come over some time. But for sure this place is an acquired taste. Gotta be looking for the buddy experience and BSing abut whatever as well as the Phins.

We have a nice Fest each year. Last year 3 days and like 34 in our seats. Hope you can make it with us this year. Goes for the guys at the Shout too…. get group seats pretty cheap. And we have a dog who plays guitar too.

I tried to read Patrick’s article but as soon I saw a walk down memory lane and how long it was so I bailed. I don’t want to revisit the past. LOL

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was a great article though….. and not like they require you to read the whole article to comment. Some people here are proud they never read for some reason….. or maybe just yanking Mike E’s chain. 🙂

With Ryan Fitzpatrick here to get a chance to play because he loves it, but on a short-term deal, it’s clear any other QBs added will be rookies. They chose him for the locker room and vet presence for a year or two. He can share a lot of experience. He’s like Josh McCown for us but with much more starter experience. This draft is huge for us to start the transformation.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

This draft will be a start, but 2020 will be huge. They are going to have a boat load of picks to play with.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I mean the types of players they like and what they start with. It doesn’t even have to include a QB. 2020 should be setup to have more options than we have now.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rookie or Rosen….. he is as much in play as any of the top 3 QBs in the draft.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hey… anything can happen. Very little surprises me anymore even when I think it will but it ultimately doesn’t. LOL

I don’t feel Rosen coming to Miami. We’re not done with attempting trades and/or releases. We’re not done with roster moves. That always helps tell the story of what we might do.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Most likely Rosen does not come to us, but what QB is more likely too? And just like with the rooks, he’d be here with an eye to the future and a compete.

LIGHTNING GET HOT LATE and beat the Coyotes 4-1. That’s 19-2-2 in their last 23 games. Bolts also clinch their first President’s Trophy (most points in league) in franchise history. And Stankos scores 364th career goal, most ever by a Lightning player. Walk dogs and sleep with a smile on my face. Life is good for Lightning fans tonight!

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, think about this too. New ARZ HC Kliff Klingsbury is the one who started the Kyler Murray craze, the guy with the 1st pick. He might want to start his career as HC with a big trade to gather premium draft picks. ARZ was the worst team after all. 😉

  88. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I don’t think Rosen is the kind of guy this new regime wants leading the team. Just my opinion….

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way the FO is operating I can see us trading down in the draft too – specifically #13. Is there one prospect in this draft we must have that changes everything at #13?

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Nope

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

and nope. That is why when I do my mocks, I always find myself trading down a bit.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we will stay put with our first. Reason being is we are either going to be sitting there with a QB prospects we probably feel good about OR we will have a guy like Oliver, Sweat, Wilkins, or someone that we will not be able to trade back much and still that caliber player. I just dont see it. Of course, ifwe were to find ourselves in the position where there is a plethora or prospects all around the same talent level, we would opt to trade back, but i believe thats true for any draft year and not just this one. 13 is a perfect “stay put” spot, since your general trade up offers have already dropped significantly in value, and yet there still exists good enough players to help your team. I get why you guys are interested in trading back, i just dont see a rebuilding team not bringing in a talented player like those i listed, if they are there.

I think this FO has their rentaQB in Fitz, if there was any interest in Rosen ot any other FA, i don’t think they would not have signed Fitzpatrick.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Probably right, but there’s also a chance they want Rosen but feel like he may need some competition and to learn the offense some, so Fitz can do that until Rosen is ready to take the reins. I think that’s less likely, but still possible.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The deal with Rosen is he eats a high draft pick, not sure this FO would part with one for him, they should be trying to add picks not trade them away

drg – We’re not going to take a QB unless we “love” them, at least not in the 1st RD. Later on you can “like” them, take a gamble on a guy w.o necessarily loving them. In other words, we’re not going to take a 1st RD QB just for the sake of taking a QB early, that won’t happen.
    ———————————————
To expand on this, we have no clue who they are in love with, we have no clue what attributes they are looking at, so by definition, if they pick a guy, they were in love with him, no matter if we dont feel the same about the prospect. I have been saying all along that this class isn’t shit, and the whole narrative of, wait until next year because its a better class, doesn’t exactly resonate with the FO’s of different clubs.

Teams will take these guys and we will know what was thought of them and my guess is at least 3 will be taken in the top 10-13. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 5 taken in the 1st round either. Just because WE believe its so, doesnt mean it is. QB’s always have the potential for overdraft, but i promise you even if we think “this guy is a 3rd at best” there are NFL teams that have them legit ranked as 1st round prospects. They might be in the late 20’s on their draft board, but they are consider by those clubs as worthy of a 1st round selection.

As fans we really got to get past ourselves and let these guys do their job without setting things us so we can be hyper critical of the moves they make. So lets sit back and relax and if they select a guy, they feel good about him, their jobs kind of depend on them getting it right so they arent going to fuck around.

i think ownership and the FO are tanking,
as for coaches and players they cant afford to tank, they always play to win, they are on display and have to protect their brand.
    —————–
Think ORob nailed it right there. But tanking doesn’t mean try to lose…. just setting up the team for down the road and not caring much whether win in 2019. Yes they will be trying to win, but only with the hand dealt.
    ——————————————————-
Stanger, thats not tanking thats building a solid foundation, those are completely independant thoughts. Orob was saying they deliberatly are hurting us in certain areas to increase the chances of losing, he gets the difference, he just believe the FO wants to lose. I cant see it. The moves that have been made arent win now moves, thats correct, but they certainly not lose now moves. They will play this season out, they arent tanking for a draft spot, they just want to get us with a solid foundation to build off of and the moves they have made have been to do that. They are cleaning up cap bullshit, they are adding players they help them transition the team and patch certain holes they see i the team. You wanna see tanking, you have to wait to the season to see it. You will be able to tell if they are losing for the top draft spot. It was pretty obvious when the Colts did it, so just wait and see if we look like we are going the way of the Colts. It would also be a year wasted of development of our new system, i just do not see these guys, these high character FO peeps we seem to have now, doing that shit.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — don’t want to get caught up in the word tank, but maybe going to the management can do that while the players don’t. Ever see Major League? But in this case instead of moving the team it is to have one that can compete in the future.
