Stephen Ross’s vision for the Miami Dolphins matches what Dolphins fans should want to see

“This is going to be a young team,” Ross said. “I want to see it grow and at the end of the season I’m sure it’ll be a better team than when it started because there’s going to be a lot of young ballplayers that are going to be having meaningful positions.”

“I want to win all the time, but sometimes you gotta take a little pain,” Ross said. “The fact is we’re a young team, we’re drafting, we’re not signing all these (free agents). It’s all going to be the talent. That’s what it is at the end of the day: finding guys who are motivated, who want to play ball. It’s not all about money; it’s about winning. And that’s what you’re looking for.

So far, Ross, Grier, Flores and the rest of the Dolphins front office have kept good on their promise. We were thrifty in free agency, even to the point where we let our own RT, Ja’Wuan James leave to the Denver Broncos to the tune of a 4 year/$51M deal. That hurt us in the short term and although I wanted to keep James, it’s arguable whether he was really worth that kind of money. I think he’s being very honest and upfront with his plan. For the millionth time, this plan isn’t tanking, but filling spots through the draft and not free agency without a boatload of early picks may not yield a lot of proven NFL starter ready talent, so as we get younger and less experienced, there will be bumps in the road as Ross made so clear.

“These guys who play football, they play to win. That’s why you don’t talk about tanking. These guys are giving their all on the field. You don’t take those kind of hits knowing the team is tanking. But we’ve got to see it getting better, they see themselves betting better and they see something developing here, that we’re building it. That’s what you really want to see this year. The wins will take care of itself.

The draft is getting closer and closer and as per usghe, the QB’s are creeping up and up, closer to the top of the draft. Nothing has changed with these QB’s other than the scripted workouts without and defensive presence where everyone oohs and aahs at their arm strength and accuracy as they stand there with no defender coming at them or covering the wide open receiver they’re throwing to. It’s amazing to me how the same thing plays over and over every year. It’s silly as can be. We all knew that Haskins was a sure fire early 1st RD pick and that because Kliff Kingsbury appears to love Murray that he would be too, but now Lock and Jones are entering top 10 consideration. I shouldn’t be surprised, it happens every year and the need for a quality starting QB seems to increase every year which thrusts at least 4 QB’s into that 1st RD, and usually the first half.

It’s never too late to get things right, and thankfully, it seems that Steve Ross, who has been extremely successful in every business venture he’s entered into except the NFL, has finally seen and decided to pursue the correct course.

“When you first enter the league, this is so different than any other business,” he said. “And I bought a team because I wanted the challenge of building a winner. And I know how I build winners. I start them from scratch. I found the best people and created an environment where people all work together and bring the best out of them and not be like any other organization.

“But football is so different. At first you want to sit back and watch and learn. After last season I said, this isn’t working. And the more we talked about it after the season, I just came to the conclusion we have to change. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. And it’s more me finding the right people and having them work together as a team. I really feel good about it.”

To be fair, Ross was pretty convinced that Adam Gase was the guy to change the fortunes of the Dolphins. Good on him for making the change once he felt differently. Now the task falls to Brian Flores and it seems like for all the right reasons he’s the right guy to carry us through. Once again, I caution because I’ve felt this way before. I didn’t love Adam Gase, but I thought for sure our offense could be a top offense at the very least, and that never happened.

So now GM Chris Grier, long time Miami Dolphins employee, has now emerged from the shadows and into the forefront. He’s the architect, and the contractor too, and will now follow Stephen Ross’s plan to build the Dolphins the right way. I believe we have started the process very well, we didn’t overspend in free agency which in and of itself, was a departure from how we always did things here. Now the biggest challenge is acing the draft. We’re not endowed with a lot of picks in this draft, we have one pick in each round except the 6th, the first round being #13, and then we rotate each round until the 6th RD, where we traded our selection to the Titans for their 7th RD pick to complete the Ryan Tannehill trade which also netted us a 2020 4th RD pick. Not a lot of draft capital, but there still may be a trade or two to get us some more. At the moment, we are actively trying to trade DE Robert Quinn and at least 2 teams (Cowboys, Saints) are interested, and even more have entered the fray. It’s also possible Reshad Jones will be traded, but that’s merely my speculation only, nothing firm on that one.

We’re heading in the right direction Dolphins fans, now we have to pass the biggest, most daunting test yet on April 25th-April 27th.

I don’t see TE or RB being a need on offense. On defense we need DL both interior and edge and more competition at corner but we’re good at safety.

Agreed on TE, RB? Safety I disagree. They are getting long in the tooth and we need depth. (Besides Fitz, or including Fitz if they move him to CB.)

    • Tim Knight says:

Jones is 31, McDonald 28 and Minkah is 22. We don’t “need” a safety this year. When I say need I’m talking about void which we do not have.

    ——————————————-
We have 2 RB’s right now, you do realize that right?

    • D says:

I think RB is on that list, and i wouldn’t be surprised if we didnt draft on this year. I definitely wouldn’t think of it as a frivolous selection if they did.

    • Tim Knight says:

Guys, need as in with don’t have much to go with. Depth yeah but Drake and Ballage are two we can roll with. Meaning not high priority “needs”. You’re never going to build this team right if you’re talking about 3rd and 4th guys as needs. RB and S depth can come from late round and UDFAs.

My question to you and Rock, what round should we be focused on at RB and S? Those positions will not be BPA at #13.

We’ve all been saying DL, OL and QB should be priority. Now we need a RB and a S. I’m talking about our premium picks. We don’t have enough draft picks to address everything anyway.

      • D says:

I never said RB is a need, I said I could see us drafting one and i never said first round, don’t know where ya got that.

  4. D says:

Thing isn’t moving at all for me

  5. D says:

You would have to come back and look at that picture a different day and see it moving where before it did not to know if that really works.

  6. Randy says:

I think this roster I s wide open because even at positions where we may have some depth…we don’t have much quality. Take anybody you like.

    • stangerx says:

We have like 12 guys signed to be on the 2021 team, and most of them are not big names. Pretty much means however this team looks then is all on this new regime. And that is the prototypical 3 years.

  7. D says:

Damn Greg Schiano out before he was really ever in lol.

  8. Tim,
I can see what you’re saying about needs vs non needs but if a player is staring you in the fact that’s that good you take him whether it’s a position of need or not. We can’t pass up on talent

  9. D says:

Tim to me if i was there at 13 and a Saquon Barkley was there, and we were in the same position we are, he’s BPA and id select him. If there was an Earl Thomas there, id select him. Just because we have good players at a position doesnt necessarily mean we couldnt add another player if we saw a once and a decade guy. Having said that, there isnt a Rb or S in this draft thats that. I think middle to late would be my target for a RB, S or WR for that matter the other positions do have a higher priority level for me but i wouldnt say that in a different draft year i wouldnt draft RB or S over one of those others even if we were in the same exact player personnel situation as now. To me its abotu the guy we are drafting and not about the position need. Like you said, you dont have to fill all positions the same year.

  10. Tim Knight says:

This RB/S conversation got stretched in too many directions. I think you know what I meant. I don’t think those positions are priority and I also don’t think they will be BPA early on for us. Other positions that we have more of a need at of same value will be there. I don’t consider a 3rd RB and 4th safety a need. Of course you need someone to fill out the depth chart. You have to go back and see where the conversation started with Rock and I.

All of this said, I really have no idea what we’re going to do leading up to the draft, during the draft and after the draft. I’m just gonna go with the flow and see where it goes. But I think the trenches and QB are the priority when looking at the roster now.

  11. stangerx says:

Pats DC Greg Schiano retired. Seems it was pretty abrupt.

    • CavalierKong says:

He took a look at the Pets coaching staff, realized that Brian Flores was the true genius behind the dynasty, and decided now that Flores was gone, the Pets are DOOMED.

…or maybe he just wanted to spend time with his family…

      Pets DOOOOOMED…rise of the Dolphins

  12. CavalierKong says:

    Looks like a 2020 6th rd for Quinn…

    • stangerx says:

Is that worth the $1.1 mil roster bonus we paid when could have cut him instead? In these days of buying picks the NFL should set up something like the Dow Jones.

  13. D says:

Looks like we only get a 2020 6th. Seems low, but it is what it is, needed to get done and at least we got something.

    • D says:

I think the Market kinda died some. They would have been better off having gotten it done earlier, but could be they just couldnt. Im fine with it personally, he wasn’t in our plans and we didnt cut him and just walk away from so better than nothing.

  14. Tim Knight says:

Some more intel on the Quinn trade.

Robert Quinn agrees to new contract with Cowboys

    • stangerx says:

“Quinn will make $8 million from the Cowboys this season with a $1 million bonus for seven sacks” — so he will get less than we had him on the book for. Makes you wonder why he had any trade value at all.

      • Tim Knight says:

We’re not paying any of his contract to Dallas. We ate the $1.1M bonus so we could trade him and we get $11.8M in cap space along with a 2020 6th rd pick.

      • stangerx says:

All correct Tim….. was just wondering why he had any trade value at all since he canceled our contract and took less from Dallas. But bottom line of the deal for us is the $1.1 mil roster bonus for a 2020 6th (which in 2019 trade chart value would be a 7th).

  15. D says:

    CavalierKong says:

…or maybe he just wanted to spend time with his family…

    Pets DOOOOOMED…rise of the Dolphins
    ———————————————–
His statement was that he wanted to spend time with family, etc, but thats always what it is. Thats something publicists draw up, and they print the same damn document for every body it seems. Reading between the lines, he either didnt like the situation he was moving into, or he did something fucked up that we will probably never hear about and needed step back and lay low and let it pass before getting back into such a spotlight.

Seems like it always goes one of two ways when they start with the “need to focus on family and friends right now”

  16. stangerx says:

So with Quinn onto the Cowboys, our current cap should be $38 million. And as of now projected to have $100 mil more in 2020. Any FAs that would fit in out there? Lots of money in the Phins’ wallet. And no not thinking big names….. more some big uglies.

  17. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, we found a suitor and a desperate one in Dallas. Quinn is where he’s at, still valuable but not a top guy. He still gets paid handsomely on a one year deal to a team that wanted him. Not all teams are in the same boat. I view this as a win for us because we didn’t want to carry his contract and we got another 2020 draft pick. You can see the change in direction already in how we’re doing things. The team is being turned over. Some will survive and others won’t.

Clear cap space and add draft picks for the future. Right on point with what they said was the plan. 🙂

    • stangerx says:

Agree with Quinn not on the roster, but we could have cut him any time we wanted….. and not pay the roster bonus if before the due date. You want to see the 2020 6th for $1.1 mil as a win…. then cool. Just don’t know how much draft picks are worth. That is the bottom line though.

      • Tim Knight says:

It was only a small amount of money for a potential sleeper pick. Brady was a 6th, Edleman was a 7th. You cut Quinn and it’s just cap space. None of us will look back and say if only we didn’t eat that $1.1M bonus for Quinn in 2019. LOL

      • stangerx says:

Tim — I will remember and be sure to remind you if that 6th rounder gets cut.

  18. wyoming85 says:

  19. New Age says:

    Tim,

Spot on with the low compensation. It’;s better than nothing and not too far from the 4th we paid(realistically after another year of sub-par performance). I also agree about S, RB, and even WR not being a need this year. We have two solid backs and a couple backups are easy to find. With WR, you can find talent later, and S can be picked in the 2020 draft when we have tons of picks.

  20. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, it doesn’t matter if the 6th doesn’t pan out. It’s a draft commodity rather than just a cut. We have no idea how any draft pick will pan out. For a rebuild it’s a numbers game. We may be prepping to make the big QB trade next year if we want to and the more picks you have at least you still have somewhat of a draft.

2020 we will be loaded with cap space and draft picks.

    • stangerx says:

Completely agree Tim. Only thing was ever analyzing was the dynamics of what we got out of this trade and for how much. If anything interested in what the worth of draft picks are on the trade market….. cause for the last two years that has been the thing.

  21. Rockphin says:

My question to you and Rock, what round should we be focused on at RB and S? Those positions will not be BPA at #13.

I would have said last year that I wouldn’t “waste” a first round pick on a safety……

    • Tim Knight says:

We took the BPA in Minkah last year. He’s more than a safety. He’s the type of guy you build your defense around.

  22. Mike E. says:

Stanger – The 6th RD pick may be packaged with other picks to move up. As long as we don’t do it for a Daniel Thomas or Leonte Carroo, it will probably be worth it. 🙂

Think Ross leaves such lesser stuff up to Grier. But maybe the market for Quinn was not as good as he was expecting.
    ————–
Of course he leaves it up to Grier to make that decision. But those decisions will be based on the parameters Ross sets as he is footing the bill. Ross is the only one that can say 1.1 mil for a 6th rd draft pick is worth it, or it isn’t.

If the GMs had their way, they’d trade any $$$ for additional draft commodity, but each owner will likely have their own delineating line for $$$ value vs draft value. One of the things I’ve always liked about Ross, is even though you can question his personnel decisions, he doesn’t skimp when it comes to paying the bill.

    • stangerx says:

I don’t think Ross is as hands as that when it comes to something like this, but easily could be wrong. And Ross for sure doesn’t skimp. Carries over every cent of unused cap. And that roster bonus did come out of the cap. But maybe Ross did make the decision on that. For sure don’t know.

It’s not set in stone but our projected draft next year with trades and comp picks is:

  31. Rockphin says:

Tim, I wasn’t concentrating on need, but rather that we can upgrade most of the position group. Fitzpatrick is a perfect example. Did we need to pick him? Are you happy we did?

    • Tim Knight says:

Yes! I think he’s going to be an all-pro. He was BPA and this year if we stay at #13 it will be DL interior or edge, QB or OL. Probably the same in the 2nd. Not sure about the 3rd round.

The best cat in the draft class, who is ‘comparable’ to LT, is Josh Allen.

  49. Tim Knight says:

The Blindside is really about LT (Lawrence Taylor) not Michael Oher. The entire premise is about finding someone who can block a player like LT. Funny his initials are the same as Left Tackle. LOL

LT came from the right, left and inside and he mauled people. The greatest defensive player I have ever seen is Lawrence Taylor.

  50. Tim Knight says:

You think LT was just an edge rusher. LOL

    The best defensive player ever!

  53. Mike E. says:

  54. Mike E. says:

From Mando – Looks like a post June 1st trade

“That means next offseason Reshad Jones, 32 years old in 2020, will likely be cut a after the team tries to trade him. Jones would have been among the players cut already this year but his contract has so far insulated him from that fate because it would cost more to cut him than keep him.

But next year, Miami can save up to $11.5 million in cap space by cutting or trading him. Indeed, the Dolphins can save up to $13.1 million this year by trading Jones after June 1.

So do not be surprised if the Dolphins try to trade the former Pro Bowl safety before the 2019 regular season begins.”

    • ocalarob says:

i don’t think they can “save” by a post June 1 trade, just defer some of his guaranteed money into the next league year.

      • steveccnv says:

I agree, we’re on the hook for his 2019 salary no matter what, so why trade him this year. Deferring it doesn’t accomplish anything.

  55. ocalarob says:

about those tires Mike, I had a 69 SS chevelle when i was a kid, had fat tires on the back and i had a problem in the rain with hydroplaning, one time out of no where i went spinning down the road, luckily i didn’t hit anything. I can only assume that driving with them in the snow would make it much worse, i think you get better traction with skinny tires.

Yeah, on dry roads the wider tires would be an advantage, but in wet weather or especially snow or ice, it would be worse. I decided I’m going uniform all around, I’m not replacing $500 worth of tires every year and a half or so. I’m just going to “plus 1” from the 245/40/19 to 255/35/20

      • Rockphin says:

I didn’t want to comment on your desire for aesthetics vs function, but I had the 350Z and it had Pirrelli low profile single directional high performance tires on it and the backs were a different size than the fronts so I could not rotate them AT ALL even side to side and I burned through $1,800 in tires every 16-18 months! I will ALWAYS look at the tires from now on when considering buying a car and will avoid if all possible having different sizes. It also made my spare tire a hassle. That was just damn foolish!

Erhardt-Perkins system opens up a lot of options with very little terminology in the huddle / at the line. The route options, etc are baked in and once the players become familiar with the system they all know what they have to do vs zone or man, etc.
    ___________________________________________________

nice post Rock…..i think Parcells used this system when with the Giants…just call out a name and everyone knows their assignment, helps from players getting confused. makes getting in and out of the huddle quick and precise.

  57. Mike E. says:

Rock – Yeah man, it’s a losing proposition the staggered setup. I’m really happy I asked a lot of questions, no way I’m changing tires that frequently. The tire companies probably pressure car manufacturers to do those staggered setups.

  58. Mike E. says:

I could definitely roll with this draft. I didn’t even look at the 2nd RD or 3rd RD picks, but trading back to #25 and and 2nd RD pick and probably more, but I like the idea of taking Simmons like I had mentioned the other day. Love to take him in the 2nd, but cool with taking him at 25 too.

Wow, Simmons RD1, RD 2 Winovich and Little, RD3 – HOFer Michael Jordan (OC Ohio St.)

That would be a great draft, sans a QB of course.

  59. Mike E. says:

ER – I have a shitty jersey history myself. Tannehill, DJFF, Karlos Dansby. The only good jerseys I bought were Marino (timeless) and Wake

  61. Mike E. says:

I would think to move up 12 spots in RD 1 would cost more than just 2nd RD pick. I’d want at least a 5th or 6th too, or a 4th next year

Try — I’m not of much help cause only been there once, and it was only for a long weekend at an all-inclusive we never left. So all I really know about Dom Rep is the car ride from the airport and back. Well that and that the people are nice (and poor from the car ride). In countries like that like to tip, even if just doing it American style is over tipping. Never even saw the DR currency though…. so either dollars were good to go or at least were at our hotel.

I had one too. And an Incognito. Maybe I like my bad boys.

      • Mike E. says:

Did you get a Darr jersey?

      • stangerx says:

Nope — he’s good but not a game changer, and plus doesn’t have the best arm on the team. 🙂

About time for me to get one though, but of the players we have signed till 2020 only one that is my kind of guy is Minkah. But have a feeling a lot of those will be popping up in the stands.

  64. Mike E. says:

Stanger – Darr isn’t on the team anymore, we have Haack. I thought maybe you got a Darr jersey, glad you didn’t. lol

    • stangerx says:

You got me on that one…. and I’m supposed to be the podiatrist on the team. Comment before was about Haack, but Darr was similar. Fields was the I-20 specialist.

I’ve got two ‘quick-hit’ observations from a very brief film study and looking over Combine numbers…

If we sit @ R1P13 and go for an EDGE Defender, the two who are likely going to be there are Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell and FSU’s Brian Burns. I’m not overly thrilled by either, but they are both good.

Ferrell reportedly runs about a 4.77 40-time (didn’t run at the Combine or his Pro Day: toe injury), and goes 6’4″, 264… with a frame to add even more weight. I see a future William Hayes or better.

Burns ran a killer 4.53 40-time at the Combine, and he goes 6’5″, 249… with a frame that is pretty much maxed out. I see a future Dion Jordan, WITHOUT the head issues and shoulder issues.

I don’t think we could go wrong with either, but I’d favor Clelin due to the fact that he is better suited to stop the run, and not just a strict pass-rusher. That’s not a knock on Burns, as he could become an elite pass-rusher.

Again, this is based on a very limited film session from me, so take it for what it’s worth.
    Thoughts?

M13, another later round sleeper DT is Trysten Hill of UCF. He can also play nose at 6’1″ 330.

“Get-off/Burst – Erupts off the ball with good reactionary quickness. Can pop straight up in the air rather than straight out up the field, but when he fires out, he can wreck plays with his burst. Quickness allows him to cross the face of offensive linemen and backdoor gaps, leading to a lot of his TFL production.”

“Competitive Toughness – Part of a heavy rotation, but played unbelievably hard when he was on the field. Ridiculous hustle in every game to attempt to chase down runners away from his gap. Plays with reckless abandon and physicality.”

“Oddly enough, Hill started the first 26 games of his career before coming off the bench in all but one game as a junior. His production went up however, as the defensive tackle posted career highs in tackles (36), TFL (10.5) and sacks (3). Hill’s quickness and power are clear strengths on tape, but his technique remains a work-in-progress, and his pass rush plan is significantly lacking.

“Still, there are enough traits here to make him a desirable early day three pickup, especially considering his ability to play A-to-B gap and his elite effort level on the field. Most NFL defensive lines are rotational to some degree, and Hill projects as a player who can provide depth early in his career with starter upside, preferably as a 1-technique.”

It’s so ridiculous. Wait until we trade Reshad Jones. LOL

    • mf13ss says:

I think it’s more a game of semantics. I mean, to rebuild with young players while offing experienced, stud vets kind of leads to the worst possible result in year 1 of “rebuilding”.

NO, it’s not ‘tanking’, yet it’s not trying to get the best possible result for today.

MikeE, re: yesterday Reds/Cubs. Not only do I like two teams in 1 sport but they are in the same division. When I was in HS in Indiana, I listened to the Reds on AM radio while going to bed and they became my favorite team. We lived closer to Chicago and my uncle was a huge Cubs fan. He always took me to see the Cubs play so they became my 2nd fav but that was when they were in same div with the Mets. Man, I think of that lineup the Reds had back then: Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, George Foster, Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey, Tom Seaver, Mario Soto, Dave Concepcion, Cesar Geromino, Dave Collins, Hector Cruz, Ron Oester, etc. What they could have been if Marge Schott wasn’t such a cheap bitch and paid for some good pitching instead of just getting Tom Seaver at the end of his career. I still have my regulation authograph George Foster bat.

  76. Tim Knight says:

I agree with this in principle but Minkah isn’t going anywhere either, he fits the multiple defense to a “T”, but I don’t think we’re done. Some trades won’t happen until after the draft. A team says oh shit we don’t have a speed WR (Stills), or we need a S (Jones), or a LB (Alonso).

Don’t look past Eric Rowe if he can stay healthy as well as Howard. Big, physical corners. I’m not counting out Tankersley either. McCain as the shorter more quick twitch nickel corner, we have three quality safeties. Our secondary might be one of the best in the game.

    • mf13ss says:

      VERY much agreed.

    • BailBondMike says:

I really hope this staff can fix Tankersley. He showed a lot of promise his rookie season then totally disappeared. I have to believe it was something lacking from the previous staff. I hope.

He suffered a season ending Achilles injury. He has a lot of work to do but I saw flashes of talent as a rookie.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I agree with your far previous post that we don’t need to draft either CB or Safety this year.

Plus we need DT, DE, and now RT so badly that we sure better pull those in rounds 1-3.

Then we can go after a QB in 4 like Ta’amu or whoever else they like, such as Tyree.

  82. naplesfan2010 says:

I do think we need TWO more RBs. I know who we have and I wanted us to draft them and I am very happy we did, but we need depth there and maybe a little different kind of guy like a FB or short yardage BruiserBack. Or a tiny scatback.

Anyway you can’t have only two RBs on your 53. So let’s draft one mid and one late and sign a couple UDFA RBs and keep the best 2.

    OR

Is anyone left out there in FA to sign? I hear the Rams are cutting loose CJ Anderson. Is that so? Is he still a person of interest for us?

Ajayi is out there. Anybody interested in the JTrain 2.0?
I liked Alex Collins coming out of college. And he’s still only 24.
Sproles and LeGarrett are too old now, right? So is Marshawn.
What about Spencer Ware and Chacandrick West? Was our new talent guy in the FO the guy who brought them to KC? They played well there. Alfred Blue from Houston? They’re all 27-28 y/o.

Rob Kelley (26 y/o) had some good games for Washington.
Alfred Morris got any legs left @ 30? Doug Martin for a rebirth at 30 or at Ty Montgomery at 26?

      • naplesfan2010 says:

He got 6 TDs in one game right?
4.45 40 at the combine and over a thou rushing in his last year at Temple.
5’11 220, so that’s anice size to be so fast.
        22 reps on the bench.

I’d be happy to have him.

In the draft I know someone on here likes Benny Snell and there’s a good size guy 5’10 224
that runs hard and scored 48 TDs in 3 seasons in the SEC. So if he’s not all beat up, we can get him in maybe the 5th because he only ran a 4.66 40 so might drop to us there.

Of course my favorite RB in this draft is Darrell Henderson (4.49 40) who scored 22 TDs in just the past year, but that was @ Memphis, and he’s probably a 3rd round pick which is a spot we probably need to spend on a DL or OL.

In the 6th (I know we don’t have one) there’s Travis Homer out of the U who ran a nice 4.48 40, averaged 6 yds a pop and amassed almost a thou on the ground last year. He might rise to the 5th.

    2 UDFA RBs I like are Nick Brossette LSU 5’11 209 with 14 TDs in 13 games but a 4.72 40 (ugh).

and Qadree Ollison 4.58 40 out of Pitt @ 6’1 228, who averaged 6.3 yds per carry and scored 11 times.

Minkah as “QB of the D”? Until his permanent position is S, and Nick Saban is our HC or DC, NO… Minkah is NOT our “QB of the D”. Let’s not be so presumptuous.

Raekwon is most likely the “QB of the D”, until proven otherwise. That kid (Raekwon) spent a LOT of time studying film in his injury year (’18). The hope is that Raekwon is the next Zach Thomas, from top-to-bottom.

I don’t want to get one by trading down this year though.
We need some linemen this year
so they won’t be rooks blowing games next year.

  88. naplesfan2010 says:

    Cordrea Tankersley tore his ACL,
which is bad enough to go on IR and takes 9-12 months rehab,
but it’s not as bad as an achilles tear.

    He ran a 4.4 40 @ 6’1 200 lbs. and did 13 reps on the bench with 225 lbs.
(even though he’s just a CB with 32″ arms, he’s both tall and chunky)
225 is +12% of his weight, which makes it better than a 310 pound OL doing 13 reps.
so he had excellent speed combined with a 30″ vert and a 10′ broad
so his leg drive is good and he has good upper body muscle mass,
so rehab should not present a problem beyond the actual tear.

He had 9 INTs for Clemson in 2 yrs. culminating in that first recent national title.

He’s very sticky in press man and his length makes him a shut down on the boundary.

However, he can lose his man across the middle and
gets kinda grabby in off cover, with 8 PIs in college.

Needs NFL elite DB coaching. (Maybe Oden is that)
If not, we have Eric Rowe from the Patriots

  89. The tanking narrative is getting old. I understand that the Jets and Bills made some offseason moves in free agency that make them look really good, on paper, compared to us but think about this.

One, Gase went 10-6 in his first season with the crew of misfits he had with him. Don’t discount the first year coaching staff. Personally, I think these guys get more out of these players than the last 3 staffs combined could.

Two, we had 31 sacks as a team last year. Less than 2 per game. Pitiful. So that can’t be replaced. We lost some kind of great firepower along the defensive line? And we were a basic D that did nothing to keep offenses guessing.

Three, there’s an assumption that we’re “gearing up for 2020”, “all in on 2020” because of all the picks we’re accumulating for next year; like we’re getting offers of 2019 picks and saying “we appreciate the 2019 pick but could you make it a 2020 pick?” We’re not getting offered 2019 picks.

I’m sure we would have liked one or two of them to be 2019 picks but we didn’t get them. So, the fact that we have all those 2020 picks is just a function of what we could get in a trade rather than us going for them on purpose.

Finally, when was the rule established that says you can’t use future draft picks to acquire talent in a current year? I don’t recall the change. So, just because we’ve got all those 2020 picks doesn’t mean we’re waiting until 2020 to use them. With the projected comps and the extra 4th for Tannehill I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go after someone we think could be valuable for us this year rather than wait. If there’s a player there we like we’re not going to pass just because of all those 2020 picks.

    JMHO!!!!

  90. naplesfan2010 says:

Thanks Wyo … I like this guy.

Ryquel Armstead…….. NFL Comparison — Alex Collins
    Overview
Face-first runner who doesn’t appear to care that brakes come standard with the vehicle. Armstead’s feet fire like pistons from the beginning of the snap all the way through his physical finishes. While he’s not classically elusive, he does find his own yards by slithering through tight quarters or stacking yards after contact. His size, decisiveness and effort in pass protection should land him work as a backup, but his play traits could help him find more carries than expected as a pro.
    Strengths
Good size with NFL thickness through his thighs
    Known for competitive nature
    Decisive and fearless
Downhill locomotive with ability to alter rush track without tapping the brakes
Needs no point of entry as inside runner and gets it in
Good feel for hugging contours of the gap and squeezing through
Feet are in constant state of chop, allowing for additional balance through contact
Runs with low pads and forward lean
Drives through contact to break tackles or finish falling forward
Possesses mindset and play strength for “gotta have it” short-yardage spots
Sifts to find his responsibility as pass protector
Willing to mirror and square blitzers with adequate effort

    Weaknesses
Could stand to run with better patience and rhythm
Aggressive nature leads to immediate gas into traffic
Needs to take a breath and allow blocking in front of him to develop
Short-strider with below-average explosive burst to the perimeter
Field vision appears to be narrow
Missing lateral agility to jump-cut around tacklers and bounce runs wide
More chain mover than chunk-play runner
    Minimal factor as pass catcher.

  91. I’m a huge fan of Olamide Zaccheaus and what he could add to our offense but I think Jalen Hurd could be a huge addition as well. With his experience as both a rb and wr and excelling at both positions he would be another piece to add another dimension to our offense.

  92. naplesfan2010 says:

    Lou
We could take Jalen Hurd in the 4th or 5th to replace DeVante as the big body WR / Run after catch guy?
Rushed for 2638 yds as a RB, but grew to be 6’4 sooo changed to WR and caught 69 for 946.

He weighs 220. did 23 reps. That’s a little TE or a huge WR. Nice blocker with double skills to keep in max protect.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

But interesting that you call him high character, since he abruptly abandoned the Tennessee program and transferred to Baylor. Many GMs are questioning him about a me-first attitude, but some feel he was not built for NFL RB, and the Vols would not change him to WR, so he did the only thing he could, even though it cost him a year sitting out.

      • Mike E. says:

Maybe he would have turned into Brandon Jacobs. Very rare though to have such a big RB

      • my understanding of the situation is he suffered a concussion as a rb and he didn’t like the punishment he was taking at the position so he wanted to change positions. the coaches declined.

he also said he regrets not sticking it out at TEN for the season before transferring but I think sometimes coaches are more interested in winning than they are in the health of players. Look at what happened to RGIII in Washington.

    • he was 6’4″ when he played rb

  93. Mike E. says:

Torry McTyer is a guy who can be worked with too. He was learning last year, and he emerged enough to make the team, now he needs to keep getting better

    • Mike E. says:

At his pro day he ran a 4.37 and 4.44, one with the wind and one against it, put up 10 reps at 5’11 188, had 6.94 3 cone plus a nice 33.5″ vertical. Plus, he has NFL bloodlines, his dad was Tim McTyer

  94. Mike E. says:

    Lou – 6’4 220 is a little thin for a RB. Brandon Jacobs was 6’4 260

  95. Tim Knight says:

Oh I thought Tankersley tore his Achilles. Okay it was an ACL.

  96. This dudes a wide receiver? Holy hell hes huge!

He looks bigger and stronger than most TE in the league.

    DK Metcalf

This guy could play , even excel at WR or TE, maybe fill in on the OL if needed, lol
The issue was raised we are going to have a full back, but will have one less TE.

I’m thinking this guy solves that dilemma.
With a guy like Metcalf, we could possibly go with just 2 TE, so we can have room for a full back.

I’m not sure what the FO feels on Metcalf, but he’s sure an interesting dude

    • Mike E. says:

Reminds me of David Boston and that didn’t go so well

      • I’m not sure he’s another Boston, barely remember the guy, but looked at his pic.

For one he is much larger and faster, and has great hands, also his father was in the NFL, a legacy. Boston was big, but Metcalf is MT Everest

The dude sure looks the part, should be a mid first rounder

      • Watching him play, he looks like a bigger and faster Gronkowski.

It will be very difficult for Db,s or even lb to bring him down

I think It’s tough to compare Metcalf to other similar receivers, because there aren’t any similar receivers.

I think his chance for success at the next level is off the charts, he is a huge mismatch, I will watch the guy no matter who picks him, it should be very interesting

Does anyone know why they give comp picks? And by that I mean the justification. Yes you are losing the player, but you can use the money would have paid him to get another in FA. Would be different if we were talking baseball where there is no cap and a team like the Yankees signs away the star of a poor team for money it can’t afford to pay.

I guess the message in the NFL is parity, so if you lose a player in FA, you get a consolation prize. Many times players get paid crazy money that wasn’t in the budget for that team, but there’s always other teams flush with cap money
