3 weeks away, what are we doing?

Whatever we do with our 1st pick, I don’t think anyone here should be surprised. I think we can go a multitude of directions. By that, I mean we can stay put at #13 and select whomever we believe is the best player , we could move up and take a player (read QB), or we might even trade back and collect more draft capital. I really have no idea what we’re doing and I definitely don’t have a strong feeling about any particular player that we’re interested in. I’m not always right about who we’re taking, but I usually have a pretty good hunch, even if it’s wrong.

I think many of you that believe we will just be going whole hog on the DL, both DE and DT, and also staying in the trenches with numerous OL. I think you guys are all overlooking the fact that we need a QB. I know we’re supposed to be all in on Tua, but I don’t buy it. We need to upgrade the QB position with some young talent for the future. Fitz is a placeholder, and right now we have Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. I feel very strongly that we are taking a QB in this draft, and it will be no later than RD 3, and very possibly RD 1. Now which QB that is, I really have no idea. I don’t think Haskins is going to make to #13 and I have no reason to believe we’re in love with him enough to trade up to get him. We very well may be, and if we are, GO GET HIM! If there’s one thing we’ve seen here since Dan the man departed in 1999 is that we’ve yet to replace him with the right QB, and thus have been 144-160 AM (After Marino).

It’s definitely not all on the QB, but when you have the right QB, you have the most important player on the field locked up. You build around that. No DE, DT, OT, OG, OC, LB, S, CB, RB, TE, K, P or LS can make that impact. You gotta have the QB, and we don’t have one. It’s time to remedy that. Take one this year, and much like the Cardinals, if you’re not sure about that guy, take another one next year, but find that guy! Having Fitz means if we do take a QB, even in RD 1, that we don’t have to rush them into service immediately. If at some point during the year the QB is ready to go in, then maybe we’ll get a peek at what is to come, but it’s not a necessity. It would also give us a jump start for next year because the QB will know the system having been here a year, even if he doesn’t play. That will make the transition next year much easier.

It’s gonna happen folks, we’re taking a QB whether you want us to or not! Get used to the idea, because it’s happening this draft. Or at least it should.

I agree we have some talented areas on our team, WRs, DBs, LT, RBs, LBs. and some very weak areas, OL, DL, and QB.

    We’re a .500 team. Not good enough.

What is it with the NFL WR position that so often turns ferocious competitors into divas? I don’t see it in other sports, as much as I do the WR position in the NFL. It’s weird!

  4. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Semantics…..rebuilding/relaying the foundation for the future. Getting rid of bad contracts, dead money, accumulating draft picks, but retaining our strengths.

I guess one could argue we have no strengths, so the nuclear option is the only option. That’s not what I see, though.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hear ya, Krishna… I honestly do. Had we put more focus on the O-Line, I think we were building a winner. That, and Tannehill wasn’t the answer at QB.

I very much dislike the nuclear option as well, but we’ve drafted so poorly and for too long.

Krishna, it’s not worth a lot of time. We agree. Communication breakdown. 🙂

I think a lot of us are saying the same thing and have been for a long time. Maybe, this is the time.

    We can only hope.

That’s why I believe in BPA or all-in for the QB you want with full conviction in the 1st round. Is the FO all in with any of the QBs in this draft let alone the 1st round? I’m not, but I’m an armchair GM.

  7. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tannehill was not ready (short college experience), had skills, and poor coaching. Hard to succeed.

Interior DL, DL, DE (is that edge these days?), RT. Interior OL is my order of need/BPA. Hate to go RT at 13.

If any other team had taken Brady, it’s likely he’d never have amounted to much, let alone win an SB.

It’s not just about who you select. That player has to fit in with what you’re trying to do, and the coaches have to put them in a situation that works for the player and the team.

With our shitty QBs and coaches, if we had drafted Gronk he may have been a JAG.

Last year essentially was a rookie year and our DC didnt really have a cohesive strategy. I think i can give him a pass for last year. He did start coming along last year towards the end so it could be a matter of him finally getting up to NFL speed.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

yeah, as the article I posted the link to says, he came on towards the 2nd half of the season. I hope the ^^ trend continues.

“I’m not a fan of Flores and trying to copy “the patriot way”…it’s been two decades and no one has been able to do it yet.”

Rock — That is one interesting and good point. What they do has been out there on tape and in roster/draft moves for more than a decade. And a lot of their coordinators have moved on to try it elsewhere as HCs as well. That not much success by itself should be a golden ticket into the HOF for the evil genius. Yeah he has had Brady….. but it is more than that.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

it’s because Belicheat sold his soul down at the cross roads.

Brady went down for the year with a blown knee, Castle gets them 11 wins and they get draft picks for Castle, Castle gets a big contract and then slides back into a backup roll.

I think it is more Belicheat than it is Brady, who IMO is a very good system QB. Take TB out of NE system and he is not the HOF QB he is today. (Again IMO)

The whole Flores hire just felt like grasping for straws to me. Yeah, he was around NE for a while, but Patricia called plays the year before him. He had only one year as a “coordinator” without ever, you know, ACTUALLY being a coordinator.

I hope I’m wrong, but I feel like we are going to be hitting the reset button again 3 years from now.

There are a bunch that ya missed too, and i see your point, you have to pick good, but hindsight is always gona look that way. The Dion Jordan pick, yeah it blew up in our face. Still the value of that trade was HUGELY in our favor, we gave up almost nothing to move up several spots. The pick busted, but the trade was a good one. Also, Dion Jordan was on everyone’s radar, Philly was going to take him if we didnt move up and get him. Its not like we are stupid and had been high on a guy that no one else liked, we were high on a guy everyone else was also high on.

Goedert over Gesicki, i know how you feel about it, but Gesicki was considered to be a better offensive weapon. That what they were looking for when they made the selection. Im not surprised they made the selection even though i kinda felt the same as you did about him being less appealing than Joedirt.

Harris over Watt was the right choice too. It hasnt turned out that way, but comparing the two prospects, their game footage showed a guy who has an insane set of speed moves. He left players looking just stupid. He was arguably the best pass rusher outside of Myles Garrett, and maybe Derek Barnett. Barnett was the guy i liked the best and he was off the board by the time we picked.

Misi over Gronk, i dunno what our needs were that draft, but all of our other picks were defense and one OL, so we obviously didn’t have intentions of taking a TE.

I guess what im saying is, Mando is preaching about shit that cant be known until it happens and you are looking back and calling foul. Thats cheap and he knows better or should.

I’ll say this about the QB crop of this draft and next year’s draft. Sure, it’s possible that next year’s draft has more talent, but I don’t believe that there still aren’t 3-4 QB’s worthy of taking in the 1st RD in this year’s draft. I maintain that if Haskins is there at #13, we should thank the football Gods, just like we did in 1983 when Dan Marino was there at #27. Is it possible that we’re the worst team in the NFL this season? Sure, it’s possible, and boy, sounds like a great time to have the #1, 2 or 3 pick with Herbert, Tua and Fromm in that draft. Think of the draft capital we can get and how nice it would be to already have our QB ready to play and in our system for a season? WINNING!

D, how were the QBs in this years Sr. Bowl?

    • D's avatar D says:

From what i saw and heard told to me by a buddy, they all looked ok, ups and down. Lock had the best overall showing during practices, showed more high end potential, but others would have moments that looked really good. A guy im seeing brought up around here a lot recently, i think by BBM, Gardner Minshew had probably the worst of the QB, but even he had some high points. I think Tyree Jackson came out with the most buzz around him going from a relatively unknown guy except for his freakish physical characteristics, to someone people i think could see raw potential in. Grier looked really good but didnt have as much zip on the passes he threw when he didn’t plant his feet, but was seen as throwing nice passes when he did get that amount of time.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It wouldn’t be optimal, but would it be the worst thing in the world if we drafted a QB this year and next with our 1st rounders? QBs ARE highly valued commodities in the NFL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you take a QB in the 1st this year and then next year it doesn’t show much conviction for the guy you drafted this year.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think it shows that you are expecting them both to fight to do their best every year and earn their place, then when a defined winner has emerged, you could start thinking about trading one. Still i dont think you take the one in 2020 if you are happy with the one from 2019. You may still select a QB, but it would be to add depth.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Randy — I say keep talking one till you find the right one. The ones that you know aren’t “the guy” then become trade bait for at least some back. But then I want to spend a 2nd on the Cardinals guy that they decided was not the guy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Rosen situation is different because it’s a new staff coming in the year after he was drafted. If we draft one this year and then next year why did we draft one this year? It shows you’re not sure about him. That’s not a good practice.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If Rosen showed like Marino…. sorta of thinking they would be designing the offense around him rather than using their #1 #1 on another QB. Still want Rosen though.

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Screw conviction. I want an elite QB. If it takes me 2 1st round picks to get one, why not? Lol
    ****
Actually, what I was thinking is that if we did draft, let’s say, a Haskins this year….and he didn’t pan out or look like he was gonna be the guy, wouldn’t be so terrible to draft another QB next year? Again, it wouldn’t be great, but the position is so important, is spending 2 picks to try to find that guy so terrible? Teams give up multiple 1st round draft picks to go get a guy. How would this be any different….except we’d have 2 guys. I’m just spitballing here.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve listened to many discussions about this with coaches and GMs and they all said that’s not a good practice. It means you didn’t have conviction on the first guy you took and is one season enough to determine he didn’t pan out? Obviously it’s an opinion but it’s one I subscribe to. I wouldn’t do it if I was calling the shots.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Randy — I’m right with you on that. So if you are spitballing I have a straw in my mouth at the ready. And if you really hit on a guy…. actually increases the trade value of the one who was not (so long as he is still young).

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Couldn’t it mean you HAD conviction on him when you drafted him, but he didn’t show what you were hoping he would in practice and meetings….so you decided to go another way after gaining more information? I certainly wouldn’t tie my hands because a guy’s feelings may be hurt.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That means you blew that pick and it only took one season to convince you. That’s really bad scouting.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, but the QB position is a crap shoot anyway. I’m just saying IF it happened, would it be so horrible to spend your first on another QB next year? Everyone keeps saying we gotta get one this year…or wait until next year. I’m saying; maybe we can get one BOTH years.

So because it didn’t work out in the past for us the trenches are now unimportant? With that sort of thinking then you look at the bust QBs taken in the 1st round and you shouldn’t take one because of that. LOL

Not sure you’re really understanding the problem with drafting QBs in the 1st in back to back years. Once you draft the second one, the previous QB knows you don’t believe in him. The entire team wonders if the FO knows what it’s doing, and the first QB’s value just depreciated by a lot because you’re telling the rest of the league you don’t believe in him. And doing this does not guarantee you the second QB pans out either. It’s a dumb approach.

I also agree with Rock about Grier, being there 15 years, and our scouting department. It’s not about consensus, it’s about doing your homework and finding the right players. Then, coaching them up. Lot’s of failure/bad decisions over decades.

Evaluating talent with the same group concerns me, as well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not like we never drafted a good player. Grier has his job for this long because he’s good at it. You can’t climb down the tree and blame the 3rd or 4th guy for everything that happened in the past. What about the additions of Allen and McKenzie? Same group? Same coaching staff? Jim Caldwell from outside the Pats org. was a great hire.

I don’t think I blamed Grier to be sure. I wonder if our eyes (scouts) need to be upgraded. That’s his job.

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve witnessed the exact same problem since our ’04 campaign: NO O-LINE.

We could have the overall first round draft pick this year and screw it up by drafting a QB… being we can’t (and haven’t been able to, since ’04) protect the franchise investment.

I’ve seen many highly-rated college QBs come and go (on many NFL teams), being they were thrown to the fire behind a weak-azz O-Line.

I do believe that Parcells had it right in drafting Jake Long over Matt Ryan… being we had no O-Line to begin with. Matt Ryan would have DIED behind our O-Line, had we drafted him in the ’08 Draft.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I call bullshit on the whole premise – no offense but I do.
Tannehill didn’t suck because of our Oline. He just sucks. Look at the passes he did throw. Missed wide open guys routinely, sometimes never even saw uncovered receivers, crap line calls, never getting out of bad plays, poor placement negating big plays, inability to bail on plays and taking stupid sacks, couldn’t/didn’t use the middle of the field, never ever walked the team down the field when opportunities to win games were there and it goes on and on.
Good QB’s make good Olines more often than good Olines making a QB good.

    • Parcells wanted Pat White instead of Matt Ryan. Is he

But this is what I talked of before.

First round Ryan did well , second round white did not

We drafted a first round OL, and had a second round QB, didn’t work out at all
Parcells found out the hard way a first round OL doesn’t mean shit if Younhave no quarterback.

Jake was a good pick for a team that already had a QB, or plannned to get one.

And the argument of better blocking doesn’t wash, because Jake couldn’t do anything to prevent white getting hit in the head out of bounds

    ———–
NO offense taken, bud… but I think we’re going to half to disagree on this one, or at least split hairs.

Now, I AM with you that a great QB can mitigate a lesser O-Line, but we’ve not really had a great QB since Danaldo Marinagnus. However, our O-Lines have SUCKED over the last 15 years. I mean, we haven’t really given our QBs a chance. Don’t want to see a rookie having to come in, developing DCS*.

That list of best pass blocking lines also featured most of the best QB’s at the top that’s not an accident. Guys who know where to go with the football.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I cannot disagree with ya on that one point (Tannehill), Brother. Nevertheless, we need to have a decent O-Line.

Factor this: some of the best pass-rushers in the game today come over the Right Tackle position. We NEED a solid Right Tackle to complement Laremy Tunsil, and I don’t care who’s our QB.

  93. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I kind of agree with Son about OL

Do you guys remember the days when we used to say draft a guy and plug him in for a decade?

    We haven’t been doing that
I tend to think that’s a trend around the NFL

Between Long, James and Pouncey we’ve left a lot of years on the table when they moved on to another team

I don’t want to draft a RT at 13 only to hve to replace him in 5 years

If on the other hand we draft a QB at 13, I would be all for the next couple of picks being OL

If we drafted a QB in the 2nd round, same thing…

I don’t mind drafting OL at all
But drafting a guy to handle the RT spot for 5 years while we try to figure out the other positions – that doesn’t really make sense to me

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s also a good draft defensively up front
So we might get a better player at 13 if we take a defensive player

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The thing about OL is, if you aren’t building a cohesive unit – 5 guys that work together, then it doesn’t matter if you bring in 1 or 2 guys that are high draft picks

    Yeah I liked it up
We have a 1st rounder this year and next year

I think I’m ‘21 we don’t have any picks – from the dragic trade
The nba is so weird about future picks

There are pretty good prospects in the top 5
It would be amazing to land Zion
But that’s like 1 in a million or something

  96. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

regarding drafting a QB at 13…Grier has said his focus is on the trenches this year…what that tells me is..if lock or haskins is there at 13 one of them will be a dolphin….smoke and mirrors

  97. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

or they really could be waiting for Tua

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I mentioned yesterday. Say we draft Haskins at #13. We play Fitz most of the season and let Haskins learn. Next year, we should be in great draft position, probably top 5, and with all those QB’s like Tua, Fromm, Herbert, teams will want to trade up in that area to get those QB’s. At that point we can bring in a bounty of draft capital, AND have our QB ready to play in 2020 who already knows the system. That’s a good place to be.

  98. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t think some of these AAF players we are signing are just camp bodies. They have some real upside and they have some NFL experience. When Jayrone Elliott was at GB he was behind some good LB’s put played well when he was in there. Not sure what happened in Dallas or NO but our staff likes something about him. I think they are looking everywhere they can to improve roster depth.

  99. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with Pig on the OL theory of getting 5 guys to gel. I also agree with the QB making the OL better, by being competent back there. Peyton and Brady did this, so do guys like Newton, RG3 and even Lamar Jackson.

It sure would be nice to get Haskins at 13 and know he’s the franchise QB, while sucking in 2019 only to trade out of #1 to get a king’s randsome.

It’s all about the future this year.
