Draft Day 2019 – It’s finally here!

Some of you regulars here have been doing mock drafts for 7 months or so and have probably done hundreds each. Guess what? That day is actually here, so that means no more mock drafts for at least 6 months. What’s more important than that is we will get a glimpse as to how this organization will be run by GM Chris Grier, and the new staff of Head Coach Brian Flores. Unfortunately, the team can’t be rebuilt in just one draft and undoubtedly, some will be frustrated with what they choose to address in this first draft of the rebuild process. Rome wasn’t built in one day and either will our team.

My impression from the regulars here at finsmobunleashed is that the majority of you feel we should and will address the trenches, OL and DL first, and then go on from there. Most of you know me and know that I disagree with that. No position on the field is more important than the QB, and since we don’t have a QB (please don’t tell me that stop gap Ryan Fitzpatrick is our QB), we need to finally get that franchise QB. If I haven’t heard a thousand times “Tank for Tua” I haven’t heard it once. We’re not tanking, it’s a long process taking a team apart and then filling the roster in the guise of the GM and Head Coach together. We Dolphins fans should know this well, we’ve been doing some form of this for the last couple of decades (without success I must say).

You all know I want a QB, and that QB is Dwayne Haskins. Yes, I’m aware he only played 1 year, but I feel that’s overblown. Either the guy has it, or he doesn’t. He understands football concepts. He has above average arm talent, with not only the ability to put NFL pace on the ball but NFL touch as well. Yes, he doesn’t run well (fast), but I want my QB throwing TD’s, not diving for the endzone and getting clobbered like Carson Wentz. I love his delivery, and I give O Rob props for noticing that it’s similar to Dan Marino. Relax . . . The way he squares his shoulders and drives the ball with his hips reminds me of Marino. Maybe because he was throwing to receivers like Duper and Clayton helped him, I’m sure it did, as Parris Campbell, Terry Mclaurin and Johnnie Dixon made up a fearsome group of WR’s.

I know some of you will disagree. We can get the best OL in this draft, and what does that give us? Tunsil is up and coming and becoming one of the better LT’s in football, and say we draft Jawaan Taylor, so now we have a legit set of bookends. Still a huge void at QB. So you’re thinking build up those trenches even more, so we take a DE/LB pass rusher in RD 2, and then a DT in RD 3. Some of you want to window dress your mocks and justify them with a 6th RD QB and say we addressed the QB position. Well, maybe you did, but it’s pretty unlikely.

Next year has at the moment 3 highly touted QB’s that will be in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert and possible Jake Fromm if he comes out after his Junior season at Georgia. If we draft our QB for the future now (Haskins), and we finish this season in the top 5 for next year’s draft, which is very likely due to the lack of talent here, we could be sitting in a place of high demand come April of 2020. Just imagine Fitz plays most of the season, and then somewhere around game 14 we give Haskins his first game action and after learning behind the veteran Fitz, Haskins acquits himself very nicely and continues to do so for the next 2 games. So now we have our franchise QB ready for 2020, and we’re sitting at #1 – #3 in the 2020 NFL Draft. I see multiple draft picks coming our way, and I mean multiple ones and 2’s. Y’all want to rebuild, THAT’S how you do it!

Anyhow . . . I can dream. Enjoy your draft day, I hope we get what you want, or something that makes you just as happy! GO DOLPHINS!

Another few players I hope we’re interested in . . . DT Dexter Lawrence, DE/LB Chase Winovich , OL Tytus Howard, DE Charles Omenihu, DE Justin Hollins, CB Michael Jackson (2 gloves!), OL Yodny Cajuste

Draft day is such a melancholy day for me. More often than not I wind up turning green, blacking out and winding up surrounded by a mass of destruction

I hear ya Ken – I don’t usually turn green, I just feel blue

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    ASKINS for HASKINS!

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – Back to Parcells. I think he was a great football coach, one of the best. He knew how to get the most out of his players, pushed all the right buttons. Even players that hated him played well for him. On the other hand, he didn’t draft LT, his GM George Young did. His record as GM and/or “Football Czar” is not nearly is good as his coaching record. He tired of it very quickly and left teams in a lurch at every stop

  6. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

what if Haskins is there at 13 and…….Miami passes on him?

  7. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Who is going to Trade with the Stej to get Haskins?

    Could be Murry??????

I think Arizona is SMOKE SCREENING!!!!

    • D's avatar D says:

Ive been saying thats how i feel about it. I think there is genuine interest in Murray but im not sure its as cut and dry as a lot do. I think they would very certainly take a trade if the price was right. Still, Klingsbury has been recruiting Murray since he was a sophomore in HS, so im sure there is real interest there.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

not sure why arizona would smokescreen, they have the #1 pick, no need to smokescreen, they can do as they please.

  8. D's avatar D says:

Draft day is always one of my most favorite days. I dont know why you would get upset over a team taking players they like and think can help the team. Thhat should make any fan excited and happy. Save your disappointment for when the pick is a failure lol, dont pre-judge.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it’s really not the player but the position, we have been very reluctant to draft a qb with our first pick, we always draft a guy in the trenches, and how has that worked for us?

maybe it’s time to get a qb.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im definitely ready for them to do that. I dont like the idea of holding our breath and hoping for the best in 2020. If the guy we like is there we need to pull the trigger. I wont lie, if we are out of day 2 without a QB prospect, ill be pretty disappointed.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess because our team has sucked for so long, been mediocre or worse, so when you have an idea what you want them to do and they go in a different direction, it’s frustrating. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re not, time will tell. Make sense?

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

how about sweat at 13 and will grier at 48?

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats would be great for me, just a matter of if Grier is there at 48, there are a lot of people who think he could go in the last half of the 1st round.

  10. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think miami may like jones

    • D's avatar D says:

I really thinik so, i have been kinda saying it all along, he is a very professional prospect, well groomed, smart quick decisions, accurate, i think he is a lot better prospect than anyone here has given any credit to. I think Lock has a ton of potential too but i do see the boom or bust possibilities in him, they just lean more in the boom side of things from what i have seen. I think O’Shea could do a lot with him.

  12. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Do we hear the Dolphins have traded the Round 3 Pick 14 to Arizona for Josh Rosen?????????

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – A whole lot of mocks I’ve read this morning have us passing on Haskins at #13. Not sure I could watch that.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      It won’t happen!

We would trade down if Haskins isn’t our cup of tea!

    • D's avatar D says:

Look, i know Haskins seems like a great player, but there are certainly things i dont like, and on of the biggest ones is the system he is in. That Ohio State system produces QB that have gawdy numbers, BUT they are system QB’s and generally dont do well when they go to the NFL and get into an NFL system. Im not saying Haskins cant adapt to the NFL but his high comp percentage and his TD’s and low int numbers are due in large part to the system they ran. They also usually have a QB who is a one year wonder, they have such great recruting they can afford to have the guy wait until his RS Sophmore year to play, and then move on. I dont think he isnt worth 13, but i truly think he is 3rd on my list of the QB’s this year, and i would select either Lock or Jones over him.

Another good write Mike E — and one advantage of being FU’s journalist is that you get to put out your desires on a day like today in detail. And I’m with you mostly. On getting a QB 100% on Haskins mostly. I just want a possible guy behind center in practice theis year and don’t think know enough to judge who that guy should be. At a certain point you have to trust your FO like you do your doctor.

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Interesting factoid just heard on QAM — 10 of the last 12 QBs taken in the first round of the draft were not taken by the team originally at that draft slot. Expect some trading tonight as well.

  27. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Want/Get
    Pig – Haskins/Ferrell
    Wyoming – Josh Allen/ Wilkins
stanger — Haskins/Tytus Howard (after trade down).
BailBondMike – Ed Oliver/Josh Allen — trade back a little for Wilkins
    Mike E – Haskins/Haskins
    ORob — Haskins/ Wilkins
    NewAge- Haskins/ Ferrell
Rock – Josh Allen / Ferrell
Tim – QB they like / Wilkins
    ER – Allen / Wilkins
    Prof Lou- Simmons/Simmons
Dbolt- trade down Lindstrom / Wilkins
    M13- Josh Allen/Ferrell
    son – Haskins / Jones

Self-sustaining — so if you want to add yours please put the whole list in.

    ——————————
Yeah thats what i was saying the other day. I dont think the Giants take Haskins, and i really dont think Denver either. I think Denver really likes Lock. Waskington is supposed to really like Haskins too.

    • D's avatar D says:

Jones may be the best chance at one of the top QB’s, and i think that would be ok with our coaches because they really have seemed to like him. Im still not 100% on if he will make it. We might see 4 QB’s gone before we pick. In fact im not so sure that the “QB’s in this draft arent as good as next years” isnt a big huge smoke screen to talk the QB prospects down so that there is a better chance they fall low enough that some teams who arent in a great position will actually get a chance on them lol. Hows that for a conspiracy theory lol.

  30. D's avatar D says:

Im still OK with Rosen for a 3rd. So if we are waiting for our last pick on day 2, having not drafted anyone tonight, and i hear that a trade has been announced, im good if thats the way they went, but im like you Rob i really hope i dont hear that anytime from now, until after we pick.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

do you think Rosen is the guy to lead us to a championship? i don’t.
if not then don’t even think about giving up a top 100 pick for him.

  31. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

everyone keeps saying ohio state qbs are a bust, but when was the last one taken in the 1st round?, maybe schlister to indy? i wouldn’t brand haskins to where he played college ball.

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

if grier is modeling after Parcels then there’s no way he takes Haskins with one year exp.

  33. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

who has Miami not shown interest in, that’s usually who we draft.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Heard from a scout a week or two ago that we should look at the position a given team is bringing in more than other positions… don’t concern yourself with the individual players.

  35. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    And taking him too!

  36. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thanks, Wyoming and Mike E. Here’s the list…

    TCU DE LJ Collier
    TCU DE/OLB Ben Banogu
    Old Dominion DE/OLB Oshane Ximenes
    Eastern Michigan DE Maxx Crosby
    Wisconsin DT Olive Sagapolu
    Mississippi State DT Jeffery Simmons
    UCF DT Trysten Hill
    Oregon DE/LB Justin Hollins
    Hawaii LB Jahlani Tavai
    Stanford LB Joey Alfeiri
    BYU LB Sione Takitaki
    Maryland LB Tre Watson
    Idaho LB Kaden Elliss
    Oregon DE/LB Jalen Jelks
    Auburn CB Jamel Dean
    Toledo CB Ka’Dar Hollman
    Tulane CB Donnie Lewis
    West Virginia WR Gary Jennings
    Stanford WR Trenton Irwin
    Wisconsin RB Alec Ingold
    West Virginia TE Trevon Wesco
    Florida T Jawaan Taylor
    California G/T Patrick Mekari

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So based on what I heard from a scout a week or two ago, it looks like we’re going to address the D-Line and LB positions. Again, don’t concern yourself with the names.

I’d say it looks like DE, and if ya connect the dots, it has Clelin Ferrell written all over it. Mind you… this isn’t a science, just predictive behavior by most NFL teams.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if we’re going to double-up on Defensive side of things, I’d think a LB/DE like Chase Winovich makes a lot of sense in the 2nd round.

Geez, I hope we address the O-Line within our first 2 picks… but Ferrell and Winovich would be KILLER for us!

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Main thing w/ the D prospects, IMO, is that your DTs will need to be able to flip to DE. Your DEs will need to be capable enough to handle LB responsibilities. I don’t think they take a pure position front 7 guy until the later rounds & if they do it’ll be a prospect who should’ve went earlier.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, and I can’t forget about DE/LB Oshane Ximenes in the 2nd round, if we double-up on the Defensive side of the ball. He’d be killer, too!

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Guy not on that list at believe Miami will be all over is Z. Allen.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I get the impression we really aren’t focused on defense . . .

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

IMO I really hope they focus on the OL & DT DE hybrid spots this draft. They could really do a great job getting ideal fits this draft as it seems loaded with them at this time. If they go QB round 1 Id have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they saw enough to convince them that there’s not huge difference vs the 2020 class….and that’s whatever QB they pick.

Once again if it’s me I take care of the OL & front 7 then maybe take Ethan Stick a little later.

I think Ed Oliver would be a dream come true.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Supposedly his biggest downfall is his attitude behind closed doors. On field talent is undeniable.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Bigger DEs like Z. Allen would serve as pass rush DTs in different pass rush situations.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think the one counterpoint i have to your argument is that they can be a 3-4 DE/4-3 DT type or they could be a 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB hybrid. That means we could be looking for pass rushers on a lot of different spectrums. I think they are going to look at the player from a production and attitude standpoint and then figure out how to use them best. I do think that versaility will be an attribute that sells the player to them though, so they will want to see a person that isnt a pure 4-3 DE or pure 4-3 DT and has no ability to play a different technique. Motor and character are going to be big prospect charateristics too from what Flores seems to make clear.

      • D's avatar D says:

There are so many bizarre old school rules I don’t get. Personally, I think it’s insane that they ever threw at each other, and are still expected to do so if a guy flips his bat. How do those 2 things become equal? One guy flips his bat because he hits a HR, so a pitcher hits him in the head with a 98 mph fastball. That’s just insane in my eyes.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lol, yeah, those kinds of unwritten rules seem crazy to me too. Aww, you grandstanded and hurt my pride so in retaliation I might severely injure you and/or end your career.

Now if you throw at my guy, I understand retaliation as a response. It’s a deterrent, like an enforcer in hockey.

I get that baseball traditions and old school rules are what a lot of people love about the game. I just can’t get behind a rule that says you give up if you’re behind or you get thrown at, or throwing a heater at a guy over flippin a bat or trotting a little too slow around the bases.

We were up 4 runs on the Brewers last night in the 9th, they scored a run, loaded the bases, and had Yelich up to bat. That guy has hit 8 HR off us this year, and one swing would have given them the lead.

Why should it be a rule that any team should stop playing all out? Like Tim said, silly.

I think it means that Rosen never developed camaraderie with his teammates. Hard to be the de facto LEADER when one thinks he’s better than everybody else.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

in other words…..Rosen is a dick!

    • I think all the Josh Rosen stuff is a bunch of bs and that’s all it is. He went to bat for fellow student athletes when he spoke out about the living conditions for student housing for athletes who couldn’t afford to live in the better housing.

He said he was lucky because his parents had money but others were living in dorm rooms the size of a closet. I think a lot of people misrepresent this kids attitude.

I’m going to enjoy watching how we go about building this team regardless of what we do tonight and throughout the draft. I’m not going to get myself all worked up that we picked this guy instead of that guy.

    ****

    Not me!!!

I’m going to light myself on fire by pick 10
I’m only going to put myself out, if we pick some one I like

I think that’s a reasonable approach to the draft Tim

    The anticipation is killing me!!!

  64. Unlike some, I’d take Rosen in a heartbeat. The chance to have your franchise qb and then still be able to trade down, get your guy in the first and still accumulate a pick or two in the process is the perfect scenario.

If the cards fall right you can come away with at least 2 DL and 2 OL that could be early contributors and eventually be solid starters .

  65. D's avatar D says:

Also we do normally select a persn that has been on one of our 30 visits, we didnt Harris’ year because they felt like it was a way to get him to drop to us. We have Fitzpatrick in on a 30, James was in on a 30, Tunsil wasnt but he was a shock to fall to us. We had done our research on him but didnt expect him to be there. Parker was in on a 30 visit. Cant remember about Jordan, besides you are getting into very different regimes now.

Well you really narrowed that down. What’s wrong with staying at #13 and picking the best player on our board?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

We have plenty of holes that can be filled with great players later in the draft, what we lack is draft picks. if you think Haskins is a franchise QB then take him if not the next priority should be getting more early picks, there’s more value and more of a chance finding a great player with extra 2nd rnder and 3rd rnders over the #13 pick and still getting a late 1st.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t disagree if you find a trade partner but taking a guy at #13 doesn’t mean it’s not smart.

I’m more excited about seeing the Avengers movie this weekend than the draft. That being said, I’d like to see a trade down this year and build of the base of this team, especially on defense and offensive line. Grier has done a good job with the draft the last few years so I’m not too worried about scratching my head too much. The X factor is Flores as a HC and if he has what it takes to build a winner and use the guys properly.

  73. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

So last year Rosen was 4th of the 4.

This year he would be at least 2nd or 3rd.

I agree with Lou! (Did I really just say that?) 😉

If we could get Rosen for a 3rd then trade back and take
    Wilkins / Lawrence
    Risner / Little
    Allen / Chase W.

    I would be ecstatic!

  74. It really wouldn’t surprise me to see us trading back and possibly even doing it more than once. Grier did say he’d rather have “players” instead of “player”. So, it does make sense and there’s a ton of depth in this draft between the latter part of the first thru the 4th rd.

To be honest, I’d almost be more disappointed if we didn’t trade back with the amount of talent we could end up with in this draft.

  82. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think the circumstance we are in needing a lot of holes to fill it would be very wise to consider trading back and acquiring more picks.

maybe if they think one of these QBs are a drop dead franchise QB then that should be the priority.

if not i would think the next priority should be trading back not just selecting the non QB BPA at 13.

of course this all depends on what they can get by trading back.

we are not the Eagles…saints…pats…rams…those teams have great rosters and have the luxury of going after a star player by trading up….so are most of the teams selecting in the 20s

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Next year I think we have a 1, 2, two 3’s (one is a compensatory pick), two 4’s, we have 12 picks. You’d like to get quality players at some point too, not just roster filler.

  83. drg's avatar drg says:

    Mike,

I would love to see us grab Haskins at 13. No clue if he’s the guy, but he’d be good value there. Unless there’s great value though, I want to trade down and get multiple 1s, 2s, or 3rd round picks. Roll it into next year. Don’t be afraid to take next year picks in trades.

My Utah guys I’m hoping to see Dolphins pick up are Chase Hansen and Marquise Blair. If Hansen stays healthy he’s going to be a stud and rumor is he’s a third day pick. Both the Utes kicker and punter are excellent, but we don’t really need that.
