2019 Dolphins Draft Summary – Looking at the season through Rosen colored glasses

So the NFL draft came and went in a whirl wind weekend. I think we made out pretty well. 2 major holes filled, or potentially filled, it’s still unknown at the moment. In my mind, the order of importance for me was QB, DL, OL. That’s how I saw it, and it wasn’t going to be easy to fill all those needs completely in one draft. For perspective, we used 6 picks in this draft, next season we have 12 picks, one 1st RD pic, two 2nd RD picks, two 3rd RD picks, two 4th RD picks, one 5th RD pick, and two each of 6th and 7th RD picks. We’re going to do a lot of fixing next season, and it’s not only a substantial draft haul, we will be flush with cap money, near $100M, so we will have plenty of flexibility to continue to add quality players to our roster.

So here’s what we did so far . . .

DT Christian Wilkins 6’3 315 Clemson Round 1 Pick #13

Wilkins was one of the top prospects on the DL in this draft. A very high character player with off the charts leadership abilities, he’s a foundation player that can set the tone in the locker room, as well as on the field. A very productive player at Clemson, Wilkins was a 4 YR starter with excellent tackling ability,. He can also get to the QB with 16 total sacks in 4 seasons. He has great burst and short are quickness, and should slide in immediately as a starter in either a 3-4 or 4-3 front.

QB Josh Rosen 6’4 226 UCLA/Arizona Cardinals Round 2 Pick #62 + 2020 5th RD Pick

Originally the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Josh spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals. Rosen started 13 games last season for Arizona finishing with 11 TD’s and 14 INT’s as well as a 55% completion percentage. It was a difficult rookie season on a very poor team evidenced by the firing of rookie HC Steve Wilks after 1 season. RB David Johnson was coming back after missing most of the previous season and was not the same player and rarely found any running room and finished with 1386 total yards in 2019 after finishing with 2118 total yards in 2016, his last full season. Larry Fitzgerald was really the only reliable target on a poor offense.

OG Michael Deiter 6’5 309 Wisconsin Round 3 Pick #78

Dieter was a 3 year starter at Wisconsin, and was actually a first team all-conference pick as a starter at LT. He played the rest of his college career however at at both guard spots and center. Obviously, Deiter is versatile and play most anywhere but is projected as an OG/C. Deiter neeeds to work hark hard in the weight room, but is a capable player who may end up playing sooner than later considering our depth along the O-line. He’s a good run blocker playing in Wiconsin’s pro style offense.

OLB Andrew Van Ginkel 6’3 241 Wisconsin Round 5 Pick #151

Andrew Van Ginkel was a 2 YR starter at OLB for Wisconsin. He has pass rushing ability and has 12 sacks in 2 seasons. Think of him as a Chase Winovich or T.J. Watt lite. He has athletic ability running a 4.56 40, a 38″ vertical, a super quick 4.14 20 yard shuttle and very good 6.89 3 cone drill. He’s a physical specimen that can hopefully find a place on our roster as pass rusher and chase and tackle LB.

OT Isaiah Prince 6’6 305 Ohio St. Round 6 Pick #202

Prince was a 3 YR starter at Ohio State, all at RT. Not coincidentally, we have a huge need at RT with the departure of Ja’Wuan James. He’s a project of sorts, not a natural knee bender and just beginning to improve with pass protection. I would imagine he will be in competition for a starting spot due to the lack of quality depth at the position with Zach Sterup and Jesse Davis. Another prospect that needs to hit the weight room (most do).

FB Chandler Cox 6’1 236 Auburn Round 7 Pick #233

Chandler Cox just sounds like a New England Patriot, doesn’t it? Cox played sparingly during 4 seasons with the Auburn Tigers. Cox was projected as an undrafted FA, but the Dolphins wanted him here. I expect Cox to make the 53. If the Patriots can get a starting QB late in RD 6, surely we can get a FB late in RD 7! Cox performed well at the Auburn pro day running a 4.7 40 with a 32″ vertical. Look for him to be worked hard to help spring the potential of our 2019 ground game, which should be exciting with the next guy I’ll discuss.

RB Myles Gaskin 5’9 204 Washington Round 7 Pick #234

Gaskin was a 4 YR starter at Washington and a very productive one at that. You look at his height weight combo you think bowling ball, but Gaskin is built more like a scat back, but he’s definitely an inside runner too, so he can do it all. Gaskin has 5323 rushing yards and 57 rushing TD’s in 4 seasons with Washington, along with 65 receptions and 465 yards receiving and 5 TD’s. This dynamo ran a 4.58 40 with a nice vertical. He’s got a lot of wiggle in him, and I think he’ll definitely be part of what I view as a very nice, diversified backfield with Kenyan Drake, Kalen Ballage and FB Chandler Cox. He has a lot of mileage but I expect he’ll continue to rack more up here in Miami.

In addition to our draft picks, we were busy as expected picking up a number of undrafted free agents. I’m not positive this is the most up to date or accurate list, but this is what I found . . .

  • Terrill Hanks, LB, New Mexico State
  • Preston Williams, WR, Colorado State
  • Tyler Horton, CB, Boise State
  • Deion Calhoun, OL, Mississippi State
  • Nik Needham, CB, UTEP
  • Montre Hartage, CB, Northwestern
  • Ryan Anderson, OL, Wake Forest
  • Wes Farnsworth, LS, Nevada
  • Dewayne Hendrix, DE, Pitt
  • Jonathan Ledbetter, DE, Georgia
  • Trenton Irwin, WR, Stanford
  • Aaron Monteiro, OL, Boston College
  • Rob Rolle, S, Villanova
  • Tre Watson, LB, Maryland

All in all, I’m really very pleased with the end result of the draft weekend. Am I looking at this through Rosen colored glasses? Of course I am! I’m getting more enthusiastic about acquiring QB Josh Rosen each day. I think he’s going to come in here and work very hard to be a difference maker, and although I think Ryan Fitzpatrick is a swell guy, I think his impact will be more as a mentor than a starting QB. I think Rosen will be our starter in 2019, and I think he’s going to earn it all the way.

This doesn’t mean we’re a Superbowl team, we still have some big holes. Our O-line needs to get settled, and I don’t think we’re done there yet either. Once cuts start happening, there will be a few veteran OL that could probably help us and I expect to pick up 1 or 2 there. Same goes for the D-line, we have little talent on the edge and also expect to get a little help once cuts begin for the DE position as well.

No one expected us to rebuild everything in one season, that’s just totally unrealistic. That doesn’t mean we can’t get to the point of being respectable. I think we can achieve that, and not be an easy beat for any team. I want to continue to improve each week and see growth, and that will put us in great position next season where we have 12 picks, and multiple picks in the first 100, and likely around $100M in cap space. It’s very promising indeed! GO DOLPHINS!

Totally agree with Rock about GOT

    I couldn’t see anything!!!!

First I thought it was my TV
Then I thought it was my eyes and I’m getting old

The reality is it was just too dark

The battle of the bastards blows that episode away
    No more night battles please

Also in terms of predictability – I agree with randy
    It was way too predictable

Look at this stage of the show, they aren’t going to people able to put something on the screen that some one else didn’t think of and make a YouTube prediction about

So predictability to some degree is a fault of the success of the show

But they made it worse in the way they set the scene up
With the music and the slow build up and the feeling that everything is lost that they milked

When you do that sort of Star Wars Esque plot structure where you try to get an audience to believe all is lost and then you drag it out, the individual minds of the audience wanders – and so many of us had already played out that ending in our minds right before it happened

So far I’m pretty disappointed with season 8

I hated the first 2 episodes and IMO this battle scene doesnt compare to some of the other big battles

As predictable as GOT is, I still can’t figure out how tomorrow’s when smoke will post a new blog

    “This doesn’t mean we’re a Superbowl team”

    Wrong Mike!!!

It’s like you’ve never heard the song

    🎶🎶🎶and when you say Miami…

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

My favorite pick most of the draft was Deiter

Hard to predict how a prospect will turn out, but I would say the odds of finding a starter in Deiter are high

I say it’s my favorite “most of the draft” bc it was my favorite until around 7 when we took Myles Gaskin – what a great pick!

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, here’s where I disagree with all the GOT detractors. First of all, I loved the episode last week, I think it was fantastic portrayal of everyone’s personalities and identities. Everyone was true to character, and it basically just a compilation of everyone showing who they are, and I think it was well done. You also have to keep in mind just because you thought the battle against the Night King was going to be the penultimate battle, they still have to fight the 20,000 soldiers of the Golden Company, so keep that in mind. THAT’s the battle that you want to see. This was just the means to get there. It’s funny, I have absolutely no idea what troops they have left, it seemed as if all the Dothraki perished, and the majority of Unsullied as well. I’m still not sure whether the Knights of the Vale were present there or not, I couldn’t see. Plus, most of the protagonists are injured, so it looks like an uphill battle, and Jon’s dragon never showed back, but Drogon who had like a 1000 of those fuckers on him did come back.

I think you guys analyze this shit too much, I just sit back and watch these fantasy shows like a 4 year old, it works!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Last season I hated the first 2 episodes too
Then from 3 on I loved it

Last season wasn’t the first season like that
The season Joffrey died (I think 4 or 5) I felt the same

So I was expecting this episode to be the turnaround episode
      And I left disappointed

I watched it again and felt the same

Maybe in time, I will enjoy it more, we will see

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Not a huge fan of that song. We should shelf it until 2020 or even more realistically, 2021. Thoughts? 🙂

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

1 more thing about GOT. I kinda expected Bran (3 eyed Raven) since he was warging the entire time the battle was raging, to take over one of the dragons to fight the Night King and protect himself. I have no idea what he was doing then all that time.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Me too

      Or at least a wolf

What was the point of the waging

Did he just want to annoy the enemy with birds?

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Also have no idea if Snow 🐺 survived
He’s become pretty independent these days fighting with the Dothraki

Did he come back to winterfell?
    Did he die?
    Did he go to college?

  11. Don’t know anything about GOT but I do know our new qb will be the GOAT

    Pig,

I get the criticism of GOT, but at this stage I’m with Mike, too far deep to not just sit back and enjoy the last few episodes. Hopefully the books deliver a more intricate plot. You get so invested in the characters that I don’t mind a somewhat predictable, but satisfying ending. Everyone trashed the Lost finale, but I kind of enjoyed it too.

Wilkins seems like a great dude. Only guy I know much about is Gaskin, and he was a huge pain in the ass for Utah every year. He should make some noise.

No comment on Rosen. I’ll just hope for the best.

Love how stacked we are 1-4 rounds next year. Keep stockpiling picks and trade down whenever possible. I want to see us with a ton of picks every year. Give the team a ton of leverage to get the players they really want and take advantage of the value picks.

I liked that presser with Josh Rosen. He seems to have it from the neck up, IMO. Great eye contact with reporters, thoughtful responses, and he said the right things.

Speaking of the neck up, man… his head is too tall for his body and he’s got slumping shoulders. Just an observation, not a diss. And I don’t care, so long as he can deliver for us.

    Welcome to Miami, Josh Rosen!

In Jordan’s defense, I don’t think he croaked before finishing the WOT series on purpose!!! LOL

It’s funny you guys brought this up. I read an article about how Martin met with the show runners / writers to flesh out how he saw the story ending just in case he died before finishing the series.

He made the show runners guess who was Jon’s real father before he would tell them.

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
I haven’t read it because I wanted to finish the series before moving onto something else in that world. But, I may have to because I got nothing to read. I started reading the Mistborn series but don’t like it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No reason to put it off, it’s 300 years before GOT, so it does give you a lot of insight into the Targaryen family and how the seven kingdoms became what they are now. It’s very good, so don’t hesitate to read it.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I haven’t read Sanderson’s Mistorn series, but I did enjoy his The Stormlight Archive

Though it took me a while to warm up to it. I read the entire first book with the “meh” feeling but kept plugging because I had nothing else to read. I enjoyed it more in book 2. (not sure if I just used to it or if it got better)

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Also, did you try Feist’s Kingdom of Ashes? New series for him, also very good.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I haven’t piked that one up yet either. I always hesitate when an author leaves “the universe” he wrote in previously.

I am picking up Patrick Ruthfas next right after I finish reading all these David Gemmell books I got.

  32. If is so refreshing to KNOW that our team’s search for a quarterback is over. I still can’t believe it.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I got to say. Rosen must be feeling really creeped out about being the pivot point in Lou & David’s Bukaki fest.

  34. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think Rosen will have 2 years to prove himself, if he’s really that bad we won’t win and we can draft Lawrence in 2021 and see if he works out.

  35. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    —————
Sign Hunter Dimick. We need edge-rushers.

  36. I was told the team isn’t going thru another Tannehill situation again with Rosen. They’re drafting another qb next year.

Yeah, they’re right. We’re not going thru another Tannehill situation again with Rosen. Because Rosen is far better than what Tannehill could ever hope to achieve.

  37. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

OTA’s in a couple of weeks, Then Mini Camp….then training camp.

  38. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If Miami were to draft Tua next year it would be a stupid move, you just used a 2nd on a QB and now you’re taking one in the first round? it would take the wind out of Rosens sails and it would appear that Grier is stuck in the mud spinning his wheels.

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think Grier and company have to hitch their wagon to Rosen for at least 2 years.

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Ourlads is correct, we’ve got 74 players on our roster right now. 16 more players to sign to reach 90, and I hope Hunter Dimick is one of them.

Gotta say I like this guy’s grounded sense of self. He’s confident, but not cocky.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

““It’s not like I’m some child soldier in Darfur. I’ve had it pretty good.” — sounds like Rosen is one smart guy by that reference. Might not matter to who starts at QB, but might be some serious comp btwn him and Harvard grad Fitz for intellectual leader in the QB room.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

They might turn out to be really good for each other.
With a positive result on Rosen’s on-field persona as well..

  43. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s how I see it. If he outplays Fitz in TC/PS or they’re even you start Rosen. If Rosen needs a little more development you start him at some point in the season. But it makes no sense to not start him at all in 2019. This is the season for growing pains. You want your team to start trending upwards in year two of a rebuild.

      • I think what a lot of people are missing out on is they DON’T know the situation in ARI and are just taking some things for granted. Rosen didn’t play in a dink and dunk offense. He played in and offense that was designed to push the ball up the field as much as possible.

One of the contributing factors to the 45 sacks. If you looked at the way our O was designed, we threw a ton of bubble screens and a lot of short stuff.

And what did Flores say about how you utilize players? You don’t look at what they can’t do, you look at what they can do.

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We didn’t trade for Rosen to replace him in a year. What sense would that make? I’d say you work with him and develop him for at least two seasons to get a feel for what he is. You’ll know by then if he’s trending upwards or not.

    • exactly. he’s not going anywhere and he’s not going to be relegated to a backup role. this nonsense about him falling flat on his face and giving us the ability to draft a qb in the 1st next yr is ridiculous.

our picks next yr could be better utilized to continue to shore up the offensive and defensive lines, the db’s and the lbs than they would be to draft another qb.

if they do draft a qb I could see them taking a guy they like maybe in the 4th or later but they’re not using a 1st and they’re not going to need to use a 1st because Rosen will be more than good enough to get it done.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right!!! If Mayfield, Darnold, Allen and Jackson aren’t all pro next year are those teams drafting a QB in the 1st round in 2020? It’s no different for Rosen with us.

      • yep. and Allen actually had a worse year than Rosen did in ’18 but, guess what, the Bills didn’t draft a qb this year.

the narrative is just such utter nonsense and I can’t believe that people actually believe themselves when they’re saying it.

  45. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  46. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

At least this should stick a fork in the Tannehill talk. Now we can fight over Rosen for the foreseeable future, lol.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah we’re already replacing him next year and he just arrived. LOL

      • I really don’t understand it. How do you bring in a guy who can be the future of the franchise, yet, your fanbase is so quick to dismiss it and just wants to talk about the qb’s in 2020 instead of focusing on what he can do for the team. The situation is much better for the team if they don’t need to use a pick on a qb but there’s so many who just can’t see that for some reason.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rosen should be viewed no differently than the other QBs drafted in the 1st rd last year. You keep working with them and developing them on their rookie deals.

      • definitely. Allen’s year was actually worse and Darnold’s wasn’t much better but neither BUF or NYJ are looking to move on from them. And Rosen could be the guy with the most upside of the three and there’s Phins fans who just want to move on already rather than give him a fair shot.

IDK the reason why but on Twitter it does seem that most of the people upset about it are from the “tank for Tua” crowd.

I always said give me a guy who had success on a not so good team that didn’t have the best offensive line and the best weapons and Rosen fits that pretty good.

      • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

You always said that, huh? That’s a mouthful! Lol

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock just has a hard on for Rosen. He’ll get over it. It’s just like he hated Gheysucki too. He’ll get past it. I think both of those guys are going to have much better seasons this year than last year.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t know much about gay guys,
but if Rock has a hard-on for Rosen,
doesn’t that mean he likes him, not hates him?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, it’s the opposite. It’s an expression. I agree it seems ambiguous, but that’s what that expression means for some reason.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So if a straight guy has a hard on for a girl, he hates her?

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“Miami is undergoing a complete rebuild this offseason. It might have the least-talented roster in the league after Ja’Wuan James, Robert Quinn, Cameron Wake, Danny Amendola and Ryan Tannehill, among others, departed. It has needs at almost every position.”
    — Mel Kiper

Gosh I really disagree with this assessment. Homerism aside, We have the leading INT CB from last yr, a pro-bowl S, and Minkah in the back-end. Agreed we need edge rushers, but Wilkins helps upgrade our interior DL right away. Kiko, Raekwon, and Jerome Baker are NOT without talent and production.

Our K/P/LS will be just fine.

We have 4 TEs that can play, although 3 of them need to do better than they did last year. (Gase)

We have 2 high-quality fast young RBs and a guy who scoreed 62TDs at Wash State.
At WR we have 3 of the fastest runners in the whole league and a former #1 draft pick (when healthy).

We have a young pro-bowl to be at LT and little else on the OL.

At QB we have ….hmmm Kiper might be right after all.

In addition to the first 13 undrafted free agents, the Dolphins signed three others: California running back Patrick Laird (961 yards rushing last season; 4.3 per carry); Pittsburgh defensive end DeWayne Hendrix (4.5 sacks last season) and Temple tight end Chris Myarick (14 catches for 146 yards last season and a solid in-line blocker).

Also, the Dolphins are bringing in FIU punter Stone Wilson to challenge punter Matt Haack.

FIU ranked 21st in the nation in punting average last season at 44.0. Wilson had 423 punting yards against UM last season, an FIU record (and a testament both to Wilson and UM’s defense).

This is going to be a very competitive TC and PS. All jobs are prove it to the new coaching staff.

    • It’s nice we’re seeing some competition almost across the board.

the kid from Colorado St probably will give some competition to Parker
Van Ginkel may provide some competition for Kiko
Wilkins may help to get improvement from both Taylor and Godchaux
some of these young guys from the AAF and udfa’s at DE should provide competition for Harris.

and what’s refreshing is nobody is going to be penciled in.

  52. what’s a better scenario. you bring in a bunch of over the hill vets on one year or two year prove it deals and pencil them in day one and have a bunch of guys on the practice field just going thru the motions because they know they’ll eventually be cut

    or

having everyone working their asses off to show what they’ve got because it’s an open competition.

What’s more, he allowed only two sacks over 356 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus, and permitted just 12 pressures across 748 total snaps played. He’s nicknamed Shaq because he’s a skilled basketball player.

Last year, he had 61 tackles (5.0 for loss), one interception and nine passes defended.

“I feel like I have been the underdog my entire career, even since high school; I was a 2 start recruit and only had one offer. So it hasn’t really bothered me because I’ve shown I can compete with the best,” Needham told insidethepylon.com.

Yeah that too, I just threw out an available name. The reason I said we don’t have to have a corner this year is because this is the year to see what you have with a lot of young players. • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

They finished the season with an OL consisting of a back-up, a late-cut FA, a PS squad guy, and 2 guys off their sofas. For like 8-9 games that’s what Rosen had for “protection.”

Not to mention crap for WRs besides the 67 yr old Larry Fitz. And their RB was still hurt from last year.

  71. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m really hoping the OC uses quick hitters to Wilson and Grant to take some of the presh off our OL. Those guys can take it to the house on any play, as can Drake and Ballage for that matter.

But if the smurfs can keep the DBs from crowding 8 in the box, Rosen might have time.

Then Rosen can spin one of those pretty balls to Stills downfield and boom.

plus dare I say maybe the OC knows some viable TE plays from somewhere in his past?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Run the ball, check down when you have to, the short passing game is a part of every team’s game plan. It’s not like there is no talent at the skilled positions and at WR with Stills, Wilson, Parker and Grant.

The Pats have proven you don’t need a #1 receiver. Do your job, run your route, get open, catch the ball and make a play. Next play someone else does that. You don’t have to rely on one guy carrying you all day. That’s the worst way to build a team. If he goes down then what?

      • maybe we will finally see the offense this year that I’ve been hoping for, the kind that keeps defenses on their heels because they have no idea what the play is going to be because there are so many weapons on the field nobody knows where the ball is going to go.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

And yeah they could be worse….just a bit tho.
Even if the win total is lower, I still think the team will be better. If that makes sense???

      • One of my takes on this year’s team is the one word you’re going to hear connected to the offense this year is “execute” which is similar to “do your job” and, IMO, that one thing is going to make a big difference.

We have the talent on the offensive side of the ball to get things done. So, if we’ve got guys who do their job the way they are taught to do their jobs the rate of success on each play should be greater than not because execution is what it’s all about.

You throw a bubble screen to a wr, if everyone blocks on the play the way they are supposed to then the chance of success is much higher than if they whiff. It’s basic football.

  78. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I wonder if the new word or theme of this team might be “discipline”. It starts here. You need to be disciplined in your practice, study, and process before you can execute it on the field. We’re saying the same thing just shades of playing sound, team football.

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

ER, it makes complete sense….that’s why the local media is clueless and Flores laughs at them.

  80. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Playing disciplined football and executing the game plan as a TEAM will net you a win more times than not, imo.

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

No offense to anyone who thinks all our offense needed was a shiny new toy, I mean QB, but without an OL, the shine will fade soon. Even Brady would fail with what we’ve had since the last time we picked a QB in the first round. No pro bowls, no MVPs, and definitely no SBs.

Somehow, this will need to get fixed. Until then 29th or worse will probably continue.

  82. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Adam Gase preached “Do your job”, but maybe he and his coaches didn’t connect with the players well, and maybe he didn’t do a good enough job teaching. I hope that Flores and his staff are better in that regard. It’s always about executing, I think Gase knew that as well, but if the team doesn’t execute well, is it the coach or the players?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

not sure what he told his players but from a stand point of what i saw he didn’t have a clue. he dumped the player that carried the team to a 10-6 record. his play calling was horrible and his team had no discipline, one of the worst offense and defense’s i have ever witnessed from miami, may be worse than the 2007 team.

glad to be rid of that moron!

Easy for you to say, so what just walk down to any corner and go make a bet? Sheesh😉

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t agree, so the Fins ranked last and the cheats ranked near the top means nothing, or last years playoff teams ranked high means nothing? Last year when they had us last we all knew we weren’t going to be the worst, but this year I’d put us no better than 31st right now. Our OL needs help bad. We have at best 3 positions filled counting Davis, then I guess you can pencil in Deiter at LG, but even so, that’s not anything close to an average line. Sure they have some teams misplaced a little, but not horrendously.

On D I don’t see any real holes, as scheming will mask the talent level, but even straight up (I have to assume we won’t see a 4 man line more than 10% of the time, because we dont have anyone other than Harris at Edge) with Spence, Godchaux, Taylor and Wilkins that’s 4 quality DL, then at LB Kiko, Raekwon, Baker, Harris, and Van Ginkel, and in the back Jones, Minkah, TJ, Howard, McCain and Rowe we’re pretty much set, besides the lack of depth. Set on D and excited to see them play this year, but still not putting any fear in any opponent.

With that said I can see us going 8-8, but I’m not running down to the corner to put my money where my mouth is.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not nitpicking Steve, but saying scheme will mask talent deficiencies is seeing holes. We’re pretty weak on at the edge, I think we all know that. We’re also questionable on the O-line, and we don’t currently have a corner opposite X. Taking into consideration we’ll be learning a new offense and defense, I think it’s reasonable not to have high expectations this season. We might struggle some early on, but I think once they learn everything, we’ll keep improving. Talent does mean something, but I’m hoping Flores is a better teacher and deals with the players light years better than Gase, who really sucked in that department

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So then you agree with me that we should be at the bottom of the power poll?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, but I still think they’re meaningless because the rosters aren’t finalized yet, so much can happen between now and September. We should be at the bottom for now, for whatever that’s worth, which isn’t much

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

saying scheme will mask talent deficiencies is seeing holes.

Of course, but every team has deficiencies. The cheats mask that bad OL with quick passes, rub routes, and video😉

The point was I dont see any glaring holes on D like I do with the OL, that was assuming we wouldn’t need an Edge, and Harris and Baker would be our 3 man line sackmasters from OLB.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not a final poll, it’s just at the moment, so yeah things aren’t finalized. It just gets a bag of dicks like you and I talking🤔

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

FO said they wanted 3 starters from the draft and they found three quality ones, but is it me or does this draft seem like it’s missing something? Not sure, if it’s the missing 4th or because we’ll have so many picks next year or because we have so many holes.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They stacked up everything for next year, but we still got a top DT and a QB. Not sure who else is starting right now. Potentially, Deiter or Prince or maybe both. I guess the FB Cox could be considered a starter.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s the strange thing, most are saying what a good draft it was, even though everything is riding on next years draft. Adding the 2nd for 2020 also comes into play.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The insistence that we’re taking a QB next year is ridiculous at this point too. We have no idea how Rosen fits here yet. We all know he’s going to be given an opportunity to start, and if he plays well, there’s no reason for us take a QB. In fact, it would be ideal if we don’t need a QB, we can really fill out a lot of holes, and we would have lots of flexibility to do that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think it fits right in with the tank narrative, so they have to stick with it, just like the guy that picks the cheats to win the SB, then after Brady goes down, they say well belicheat is the master they’ll still win.

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I couldn’t do that when I was young. It looks like he planted on the side and top of his foot. It looks crazy to me, I don’t know

  91. D's avatar D says:

I think you treat Rosen like we drafted him this year. You let him compete for the starting position but you do have intentions of making him the starter as the year goes on as long as he is picking things up like you want. I think you are also evaluating the OL prior to just throwing him to the wolves like Arizona did. I think he starts a some point this coming year, most likely earlier in the season, maybe day 1 but we will just have to see.

As for drafting a guy next year, i dont think they draft a guy next year. I think Rosen is, like i said before, equivalent to us drafting someone this year. I think we expect he is our guy, and that worst case scenario we shoot for a guy in 2021 if its a fail. Thats said, i think there still could be consideration in 2020, but Rosen would have to be really rubbing people the wrong way for that to happen.

Wilkins gives us our foundation block on defense. We possibly have pieces around him, though unproven ones like Harris and now this Van Ginkle kid, who i think is going to be a hybrid OLB and DE for us. We have a solid secondary but i expect we add some before we begin the PS games. I also think we add some DE talent for then as well. I feel optimistic about our defense, i dont see it as a finsihed product but its a nice solid start.

Deiter at OG i think is a day 1 starter, and i think Price has a decent shot to take the RT spot. At very worst we added a nice depth player who can be a swing OT backing up both spots. I feel good about what they are doing, and though we still might not be in a competative spot i think we are way better than we were last year. The team feels like its coming together which is what i want to see happen this year more than any W/L total or talk of playoffs.

  95. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I generally think we are better than last year too

Albeit it’s really hard to know

I guess the big loss from last year is Juwaan James
But overall our OL wasn’t very good with James anyway

The one area I expected to be better at last year going into the season was DL – and that really fell apart during the season
I don’t know that we are better at DL by selecting Wilkins –
I don’t know that we can generate a consistent pass rush in 2019

That and our OL jump out as our 2 biggest weakness

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can you tell me why we’re way better? Way better where? I don’t know how you can say that right now. You’re plugging Deiter and Prince in at RG and RT respectively, and you put Wilkins on the DL and now we’re way better? van Ginkel is better than Robert Quinn? That’s pretty damn optimistic. Understood that you hope Rosen is also better than Tannehill. BTW, not arguing, just think you may be a little optimistic using the addition by subtraction theory here.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we are better it’s probably not by a lot unless people really improve in 2019

I don’t think we are worse and I think we added quality players

Some of the things that really were an issue last year weren’t really about the roster IMO
So it’s really hard to tell where we are

But generally I feel better about Rosen/Fitzpatrick than I did about Tannehill/Moore last year

I think we see the benefits of Wilkins right off the start

FYI – I don’t think Ginkel replaces Quinn

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I feel like our coaching should be better, and our QB’s could be better, but on defense, not sure where the pass rush is coming from, unless we just disguise our blitzes well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Van Ginkel is different type of player than Quinn. He’ll be more of a stunt/blitzer as opposed to a pure edge rusher. He’s more of a OLB rusher.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I agree about the pass rush

But contrast that to last year when we thought we had the personnel to generate the pass rush and it didn’t come together

It’s the same problem as last year except we don’t have the expectations this year

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, we had no pass rush last year, so it wont take much to accomplish that. We improved only in the coaching staff, at least that’s our hope, and maybe QB, but I’m with you that this team isnt better than last years.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

What I will say is I think compared to last year you hope your roster is better based on natural progression of young players in key areas. We lost many vet DE’s, but last year they were horrid so so don’t think it’s s huge loss. I think Wilkins upgrades the DL even w/ the losses at DE. I think we get better on D w/ Fitz, Baker, Raekwon, & Taylor having another year as a pro. The other Hope is that the scheme and coaching is better. I can say the same for the offensive side of the ball. So in turn natural progression & hopefully better coaching occur which could lead to a better team. I just hope that Flores and company are the staff we’ve been hoping for.
