Potential Miami Dolphins 2019 Depth Chart

We have an awful lot of time between now and the start of the season, and considering we haven’t seen anything in the way of actual football activities, why not come up with a possible depth chart with nothing to go on? We spend hours upon hours on potential draft picks, so now that we have some players on the roster, might as well throw them on a depth chart for fun! This is how I believe we may start the season, it’s understood more players will be added and subtracted by then . . .

  1. Fitzpatrick was an insurance move , if the Rosen deal couldnt be completed

but, the Rosen deal was completed, sorry Fitz, heres a clipboard

dude can pass rush and is a sure tackler, and a demon on special teams

    About the depth chart …
I always thought Spence was a more NT-ish DT that God-son or Taylor,
as he has more sand in his pants.

Then why does he not have a job?
    —————
That’s an excellent question… to which I have no answer (yet).

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Didn’t deguglielmo get fired from the colts in 2019
after his OL gave up only 18 sacks after they’d given up 56 the yr before?

    wtf was Frank Reich thinking?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Like most HCs, Reich wanted his own guy… a system guy that works with his own philosophies.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The exact same thing essentially happened to both John Benton and Hudson Houck… and that’s how they ended up with us in the past.

  7. Deguglielmo was our O line coach from ’09-’11 an then again in ’17.

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Neither of them are really stout like a NT. I just see Taylor play with more power. I also think Godchaux is more of a gap penetrator than Taylor. But, like I said, they are all similar…move them around…confuse the OL and pick your spots to bring pressure. They’ll work it out in practice.

    • At this point I really don’t know what to expect as far as what our D is going to look like this year and from week to week. I THINK it’s going to look a lot different from what it’s looked the last 3 years.

That’s one of the things that I think is going to be a fun part of watching this team this year. Our defense has been so vanilla that to finally see it be that “multiple” they’re talking about and keeping offenses off balance should be a lot more fun and interesting to watch.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It seems like every year we say things like, you guys mentioned about liking our D, then a couple of injuries happen and the D sucks, then the next year comes around and the talent again seems to be there and we say this D is going to be pretty good and better than last years D.

All of that seems to be true, but something is missing. Can we avoid injuries, game plan adequately for each opponent, put it together on both sides of the ball and play complimentary football?

We’ve played good in the first year with new coaches, why is it? Is it because everyone buys it to what they’re trying to accomplish and plays together?

If that’s true, why cant we make the playoffs this year? Sure we got rid of some talent, but what good were they, when they weren’t used properly? I’d rather have less talent used to their strengths and put in a scheme that works, instead of a group of individuals any day.

I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but if some things fall into place this team has enough talent to make the playoffs, fuck this 3 year plan, hitter done.

I really never thought of Kilgore as being overrated because I look at a guy who is overrated as one who is constantly being talked about by fans and media as being better than he is and I don’t know anyone who thinks Kilgore is anything special.
    ————
I hear ya on that, yet the sense by many is that Kilgore’s return after injury is going to stabilize our O-Line. Perhaps I shouldn’t call him “overrated”, but rather, most likely to disappoint this year. And obviously, I hope I’m wrong.

    ————–
Special thanks to YOUNG STANGER for doing such a great job getting the fest tickets. They are located DIRECTLY ABOVE my seat location down stairs!! And a tip of the hat to MIKE E. for another solid analysis. REALLY good work, Mike!
    ————-
SHOW ME YEAR?? –FLORES!! Will the stupid penalties be DOWN?? IF NOT, that’s on the coaching staff and GRIER for drafting too many dead heads who can’t count to 3!!! The coaches must enforce mental discipline, something prior coaches hired by Ross have not done a good enough job on.
Also, will FLORES call 3 yard pass plays on 3rd and 11?? LANDRY was unfairly ripped on this board for CATCHING THESE PASSES!! HOW about putting the blame on ADAM GARSE and JOE “GUMWRAPPER” PHILBIN?????? OH, right, that would have to involve giving LANDRY a pat on the back for catching about 100 passes per season. WE SURE AS HELL CAN’T REWARD RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCES ON THIS BOARD, CAN WE?? Oh, ya, ya, some of you DIDN’T like Landry’s bitching, you poor babies!! TRUTH IS, LANDRY WAS RIGHT!!! He WAS being mis-used by prior Miami head coaches. Hope y’all enjoy LANDRY and his team mates winning several more games than our beloved Fins this year.
PLEASANT SURPRISE THIS YEAR?? TWO of ’em!!
FIRST, Fins have fewer key injuries in 2019. SO-O-O, if Grier has picked THE RIGHT PEOPLE and IF ROSS HAS PICKED THE RIGHT HEAD COACH, we SHOULD win more games than we did last season (which featured 7 wins). RIGHT, Tim???
SECOND, ROSEN STARTS ALL 16 REGULAR SEASON GAMES AND AVOIDS MAJOR INJURY.—The current status of Miami’s O-Line makes this unlikely. And Rosen’s NOT a fleet-footed, elusive, quarterback. But maybe luck is on Miami’s side in 2019??? NOPE, LUCK STILL PLAYS FOR THE COLTS. And I’m guessing his team makes the playoffs, unless Lady Luck frowns on Indy, again.

The structure of Howard’s contract is out. Runs though 2024. Cap hit based on just salary is pretty flat through the term. Also looks like one where if he wasn’t up we could cut in 2022 without much pain, but then if he is playing legit at that point should be a bargain cause this is not backloaded.

Overall — looks like a contract that both sides expect and hope to be played out.

How did you come to the conclusion that the salary was pretty flat, based on the numbers they showed? $15M payout the first year, with a cap hit of only $10M. The numbers are misleading, does the $15M payout include the years salary?

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – I don’t see Stills as overrated because I’m not sure where he gets praise from. It’s not like I see people saying Stills is a great WR. I think people here, and elsewhere too treat Minkah like he’s an all-pro right now. I think he could be a very good player, maybe even great, but he’s not there yet at all

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s there Mike, and may be our best player.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To add, I never thought all that much about Stills to begin with. He’s not a fight for the ball receiver or fight for extra yards. He made his hay here getting wide open and going untouched to the end zone. He’s kind of a one trick pony. Shut him down over the top and you really limit his effectiveness.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I wouldn’t mind at all if Ballage takes a leap forward, that would be great. I have no stock in Drake. As long as the run game is working I’m happy. It could very be Gaskin that ends up being the guy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The thing with Drake is, if he becomes the bell cow, he can take it to the house on any play, so that puts pressure on the D, but yeah I dont see that. I expect Ballage to get the bulk of the Carries though.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – He wasn’t “there” last year. He looked overmatched at corner, and wasn’t super special at safety either. He was good at best. He’s a potentially great player, but I don’t see how you can say he’s great by what he did last season, and not just stats, the eyeball test. I saw him abused often at corner, and he wasn’t super instinctive at safety either.

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Stills should be more of a weapon with Fitz or Rosen at QB, and even more, if the running game is working (play action).

Stills maybe a one trick pony but it is a pretty damn good trick

  43. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Minkah is not a corner and forced to cover due to deleted injured db unit, a rookie who played 3 db positions, and actually was one of reasons for winning two games last year

Not great, but considering. Oh my…..

  44. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m at least not a member of the He Man Stills Hater club. He’s a decent flyer and has surprised me on being pretty good on some of his medium routes (even if mainly set up by the “not going deep” move). Not Duper or Clayton or a guy who will demand doubles….. but that’s not in his price range either.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – Minkah’s always been a hybrid S/CB. Our own Sonny here wants him to be the starting corner opposite X, so take that for what it’s worth. I think he prefers to play one position though, he’s said as much earlier this year. He wanted to know whether he should lose weight to play corner or put on weight to play safety. It looks like he will be playing safety, and maybe he will thrive more there staying at one spot. That being said, at Bama, he did everything, and he was pretty proficient anywhere Saban put him, that’s why Saban loved him so much. I totally understand his preference to stay at one position though, it’s just easier to master one job than three.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Especially, as a rookie in the NFL playing 3 dbs and winning games. He was pretty phenomenal…..but your evaluation was of him….blah.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s cool, we probably just have different definitions or perceptions of phenomenal. I like Minkah, I’m not in any way saying he sucked last year or was even disappointing. I just said he was overrated and I stand by that. To me he was less than average to average at best in coverage as a corner, so when I think of phenomenal, I don’t see that as being phenomenal.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

He wasn’t drafted as a corner, but keep to your knock on him that he didn’t do well as a corner….

“Rosen needs to be challenged intellectually, so he doesn’t get bored. He’s a millennial. He wants to know why,” said Mora Jr. “Millennials, once they know why, they’re good. Josh has a lot of interests in life. If you can hold his concentration level and focus only on football for a few years, he will set the world on fire. He has so much ability, and he’s a really good kid.”

said by his college coach Jim Mora.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“I want my players to want to know the why. I think in order to get a player to really believe in what he’s doing, he should know why. I think that’s coaching. If players don’t ask why, they should be asking why,” said Flores. “I want my players to believe in what they’re doing. Is it through doing what we ask them to do? Yes. Should they ask why they’re doing it so they can believe in a little bit more? I think so. I’ve always kind of challenged my players to ask why.”

said by Brian Flores at the rookie minicamp

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Based on Jim Mora Jr.’s pre-draft assessment of the kind of environment Josh Rosen will need to thrive and “set the world on fire” in the NFL, it sounds like Rosen and Flores are a perfect pair. Their mutual interest in the deeper meaning means Rosen is free to receive the stimulus his intellect requires, while Flores won’t take offense or get insecure to his young quarterback asking questions.

      said the author, Kyle C.

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – My point with Wallace is he was totally hated here, and belittled constantly, and yet he had one more TD in his first 2 seasons with the Dolphins. I actually think Wallace was a better all around receiver, especially in year 2 where he didn’t have as many TD’s, but worked more shorter routes and made much tougher contested catches. He was definitely an asshole, and Stills as a person is one of my favorites, I love his efforts trying to mend relations with police and inner city people, that’s just fantastic work.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I’ve read that stuff about Rosen, I like it. I’d rather have a guy who is invested in what’s going on rather than a guy who thinks he can just step onto the field and light it up. I can guarantee you Tom Brady has a lot of the same personality traits as Rosen does.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      hmmmm …
Could it be possible that Grier signed a QB who would best fit the personality traits that his HC wants, based on who the HC has worked with in the past, which was the most successful player at that position ever?

      Why would he do that?

Is it possible he also did that in the first, third, 5th, and 7th rounds of the draft as well?
I mean who drafts a FB these days unless he happens to have a NE-trained coach who has a FB mentality himself and knows how to use one to win close games?

  50. everyone should change their most underrated to Kenny Stills, damn SMH

i can prove my point, but yours is wrong and unprovable.
we all watched the games too, and i am thinking making up falsehoods about him that cannot be proved, nor was noticed, is what it is, but its not a license to make up bs about him IMO

are u just hating on him because he kneeled, is that it?

i thought we were talking about his play

anyway, he gets the prize for most unappreciated IMO

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

David – I just posted earlier that I think as a person he’s done great things. If you read that, you wouldn’t even be asking me this stupid question in the first place. I’m more than capable of separating the player and the person. I defended Wallace here all the time even though I thought he was an ass, he was a talented receiver. I think Stills is a good person, I just don’t think he’s a great all around receiver.

    • we do need upgrades at WR we dont even have a top 50 wr. most of his highlights, of course he doesnt fight for yards, there isnt anyone to fight with when You blow the top of of the defense. but he does fight some, and dives for the pylon, which to me is fighting for every yard, and fighing for 6 points

i just dont think hes a pussy, thats all,

but yes, we could use some upgrades at WR, maybe next year WE will

  54. Mike, If You dont like Stills because he felt like He stood up for his civil rights, its ok to say so. i wont agree with it, but wont argue about it, because We already crossed that river long ago

but to say hes not a fighter for the yards? i just wont be able to agree with You, i havent seen that, sorry

anyways, yes, have a good Mothers day to all the Mothers!

Tunsil’s a good call. He was in my mix for best player too.

  59. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For best player, I chose Minkah over X only because of Minkah’s position versatility. Right now X is the better cover corner, but I think Minkah was more invaluable last year. So I guess that is interpretation, invaluable vs best. Just my opinion.

Good game, Lou. The responses have been fun to read.

  62. does anyone feel we should have drafted or need a WR?

i feel like we could use another top receiver, but not sure we had enough draft picks to get one this year.
we filled most of our most pressing needs in the draft, not all, but most

next year, im thinking we will draft a WR<
with 13 draft picks, its highly likely IMO

, any thoughts on if and who it would be?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Given that we resigned Parker I figure wideout is one of our deepest positions with quality for next year at least. If he doesn’t work out then for sure an Alpha would be an option….. but so would a RT, G, or DE.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

David could be right though as Parker might have split ends go on injury reserve. We may need a receiver…..udfas in the fold looking for an opportunity.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ve got like 10 WRs on the roster. I think we’ll be alright.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Agree

      • lmao 10 WR but we need top quality ones, im sure all 10 arent

Stills , Parker, and Grant are definitely keepers, but none are really number one receivers like Parker was hoped to be
Wilson is a good candidate for prove it this season, prove he can stay on the field all year, or find someone who can

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

David, Wilson was balling before he got hurt and it was because he was tackled awkwardly from behind almost like a lower body horse collar and he hurt his hip. I believe the play he got hurt on was like 20 yard gain or something. If he’s healthy he gives us explosiveness.

  63. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m hoping Rosen can get a good year under his belt with a fairly stable OL. Hope good coaching and beast-mode gems are found this year. That would be awesome, but probably too much Koolaid.

  64. in preseason we can get a looksee at Preston WIlliams, WR and see what he has to bring to the table

its possible he could make the team

  65. Trent Dilfer weighing in on Rosen

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brice Butler might be a decent WR for us this year. He gives you some size. He’s had a mediocre career but he’s a vet who gives you some depth.

  67. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

David, I like Stills and think he is a good receiver but what makes him not elite is he is not tough. Does not get the tough yards after the catch. Instead of trying to break a tackle, he will just go down so he does not get hit by the second guy coming. The kicker for me and the perfect example of this was the New England “Miami Miracle” game. He had a great game stat wise but it was on a 2nd and 16 late in the game where he made the catch and run but then made a QB slide a yard before the 1st down marker when he actually could have gotten at least 3-4 more yards and the 1st down but didn’t want to take a hit. Needless to say, we could not convert the 3rd and 1 killing our drive and momentum and NE then marched for another score. He got redeemed only because of the “Miami Miracle” or there would have been much more talk about it.

    • fair enough, i do remember that play as well and thought the same thing You did

granted the guys not perfect, we could use some more WR next year, but i do believe he had a good season for us last year, and he is a fighter, just not sure why he didnt on that one play

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think we have plenty of WRs this year. If no one stands out as a Big, a True #1, a downfield threat, etc. THAT GUY, then we need to draft one next year.

Preston Williams, Brice Butler (my favorite dark horse to break out, 6’3 220 and fast, looked good last year), Ricardo Luois, Reece Horn, Trenton Irwin, plus the 6 from last year.

    That should be plenty.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who has ever been a true #1 WR on the Pats? They go through them year to year but have a core group of reliables. One week it’s this guy, the next someone else and everyone contributes here and there. I prefer that over having to rely on that #1 guy.

      • the patriots wide receiver won super bowl mvp,
i dont know how You can say hes not a number one receiver if hes a super bowl MVP

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because he’s not. He had a great game in the SB and he is clutch but he’s not like a Julio Jones or Antonio Brown etc. Come on, you know Edelman’s game, it’s like Landry’s but he plays on a great team.

  69. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We need the TE position to become part of our game plan…..that’s the only receiver position that I’m concerned about at this point.

  70. remember Steve Young ‘s rookie season with Tampa? lol

consider yourself rare, not many remember Young played his rookie season in Tampa

when he went to the 49ers, he became one of the NFL;s greatest QB of all time

a QB has to have a good system around him

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you’re in the camp that believes there’s elite talent, and everyone else is grouped together and performs well when put in the right situation, then you’ll like where Flores is going to take us.

What would you rather have guys like Wake and Quinn that aren’t put in a position to succeed or guys like Godxhaux and Taylor put in the right situations, where their numbers aren’t great, but the team run D is too 10 and the overall D is top 15?

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed the following tryout players: center Kirk Barron, cornerback Jamar Summers and running back Mark Walton. The team has waived/injured center Connor Hilland and safety Rob Rolle.

Barron finished his collegiate career with 39 consecutive starts at Purdue. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a senior in 2018. Barron was a co-recipient of the team’s 2018 Leonard Wilson Award, given annually to the player who best exemplifies unselfish dedication.

Summers originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Pittsburgh on May 8, 2018, spending the 2018 offseason and training camp with the Steelers. He posted seven tackles (four solo) and two passes defensed in four preseason games. Summers played collegiately at Connecticut, earning first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore in 2015.

Walton is entering his second NFL season after he played for Cincinnati in 2018. He played in 14 games, totaling 14 carries for 34 yards (2.4 avg.) and five receptions for 41 yards (8.2 avg.). Walton also posted four special teams tackles (three solo). He originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick (112th overall) by Cincinnati in the 2018 NFL draft. A Miami native, Walton played collegiately at the University of Miami and attended Booker T. Washington High School.

Hilland spent the 2018 season on Miami’s practice squad after he was signed as an undrafted college free agent on May 10, 2018. He was a four-year starter (2014-17) at William & Mary, where he started 39 career games at left guard and earned first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors as a senior in 2017.

Rolle was signed by Miami as an undrafted college free agent on May 9, 2019. He was a five-year letterman (2014-18) and three-year starter at Villanova, where he played in 50 career games with 27 starts. He earned first-team All-CAA honors as a junior in 2016.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m sure Lou isnt going to like the news on Hilland,I dont either. Maybe he’ll be back next year.

  74. Tim, consider Wilson has had 5 years in the league, and caught 150 passes.

Landry did 150 in about 20 games, less than a year and a half

agreed wilson is explosive when healthy, but for some reason he doesnt get more than 30 receptions a year

thats less than 2 catches a week

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why do you have to keep bringing up Landry? He caught half his passes for less than 5 yards. Wilson is an explosive weapon not a possession WR. He was also on a loaded Chiefs team. He was on pace for 60 with us.

      • i used Landry as a comparison, but ok, just look at Wilsons 5 years in the league

5 years is a good amount of time to prove yourself as a WR
he has less than 2 receptions a game averaged out over 5 years

thats like a part time player IMO

we dont have any top receivers, zero in the top 50. we need upgrades, Julian Edelman winning the super bowl MVP highlights the importance of top receivers,
Wilson could never do what Edelman did,,

we will need better receivers for Josh, we have mediocre ones

  75. if a WR cant get more than 1 or 2 receptions per game, we probably should try to upgrade

  76. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

David, AGAIN, I LIKE STILLS and glad he is on our team. I’m saying he is over rated because he is not a tough WR. I watched your video twice and only saw him break one tackle on a spin move right when he caught the ball. I did not see him fighting for tough yards when there is contact only saw it when there was no contact. Like MikeE. said. it was a highlight reel.

  77. Tim, Miami might have 10 receivers, but how many even made the top 50 in the NFL?
    ZERO, not a single one.

many teams have 2 receivers better than we have

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=RECEIVING&conference=null&season=2018&seasonType=POST&d-447263-s=RECEIVING_YARDS&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-n=1

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re only going to keep 5 or 6 and Stills, Parker, Wilson and Grant will be 4 of them. The hope is the TEs become more involved and I think the RBs will be more involved in the passing game. Spread it around, don’t rely on one or two guys.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — if you are going to go by playoff numbers…. seems you can make that point about pretty much anything. But yeah the regular season stats aren’t much better….. but Wilson and Grant did go down and was pretty much set up as WR by committee.

      • im looking at the WR in the NFL, some damn good ones, not a single one plays for us though

we dont have a single name in the top 50, thats not even close to where we could be and need to be
we will get one next year, but have to make do with these guys this year, maybe one of them will crack the top 100

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — check out the link you put out. Was numbers in the playoffs (and we weren’t in them). Sorry if wasn’t clear in explaining that. Maybe reset and read my comment with that in mind?

  78. does anyone think we have a WR on the roster that can win super bowl MVP someday?

if no, we need to try to upgrade for that

Edelman is the toughest meanest SOB alive, when the stakes are higher, he fights harder

he is an incredibly underrated athlete, his workout and conditioning routine is world class.

he wasnt going to be denied in the super bowl, period

we dont have that here, im feeling like there could be a potential candidate somewhere, but he isnt on our roster

  79. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

we dont have a single name in the top 50
    ————————————————
David, I think I would have to attribute that to injuries (at WR, QB and OL) and our shitty coaching the last 2 years. I think we have a solid WR group.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Least they are one of our most solid groups for next season. Not sure if that means solid or not….. but plenty more to worry about on the field.

  80. Stanger, thanks i had it there, dont know how it switched to post season

    but on regular season
we have zero WR in the top 50 on the roster

Amendola was 50, but hes not on the roster this year

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And Amendola’s catches will be there for others to grab. Thinking Wilson. He really impressed me. And pretty sure he’ll be our main guy in slot.

  81. BBM, without question the WR we have could and maybe will do better this year, but we still dont have an apha male WR , someone that can help us get over the top like Edelman

a top receiver with the rest of our receivers in complimentary roles may work very well

  82. btw, guess super bowl MVP wasnt enough accomplishments this year.
yesterday Julian Edelman went back to Kent State U and got his degree. lol

The 32-year-old made good on his promise to his parents that he would one day finish his degree in integrative studies. The Super Bowl MVP left school a decade ago after being drafted by the Pats.

Edelman said keeping this promise and setting a good example for his daughter wasn’t always easy.

“Some people have got to climb a mountain, some people have to swim through a river,” he said. “I did what I had to do.” Julian Edelman

    ****************************************************************************
this is the kind of guys we need here

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d rather have an offense where you utilize 7-8 different guys rather than relying on one or two guys to get the bulk of the work. When one of those guys goes down now you need someone to replace them and he likely won’t be on that level and your offense was built around them.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d love someone who dominates. Think Megatron, Jerry Rice, etc. Same time…. also understand how rare they are.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but eventually you have to pay them and I don’t think you need that type of WR to win. I can’t remember where I heard or saw it but they did a history of teams with top WRs and it didn’t equate to winning a lot other than Jerry Rice. But those 49ers teams had already won two SBs without him because they were a loaded team in all phases.

  84. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

we still dont have an apha male WR
    ———————————————–
I agree, would nice to have one but we may not need one. One we have may elevate to that within this new offense.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To go back to the DL discussion. One or two guys may play “nose” more than others but we might just use a rotation of all of them when we use that formation. The reason I put Wilkins on the left side is because a lot of the video I watched on him he played the left side. He even lined up like a OLB standing up and rushing. Looking forward to watching him play for us.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Quite a few OTAs coming up starting tomorrow when the vets join the rooks and now it’s the big team. This is the beginning of the team getting to know each other and the coaches learn more about what they have and don’t have. Go Phins!!!

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

My comment on WR was misconstrued.
And there is a lot of confusion about the term “#1 WR.”

Some say it means the guy with the most number of catches, which means he was the favored read by the QB or calls by the OC or both AND he could always get open.

This is frequently a slot WR, such as Landry and Edelman, who caught most of their balls out of slot formations. This is partly because those are quick developing plays, so the QB can get it done even under pressure, whereas the long throws take too long for many OLs. It is also partly because those slot throws are higher percentage to complete so ergo more will be completed than the long throws.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

However, some people think the term #1 WR refers to a size prototype. IE the tall, big-body guy who is maybe not the fastest, such as a Stills, but the guy who can post up for jump balls, high point above the CBs on the boundary, fight and win the 50/50 balls, and just generally dominate in the red zone.

What we hope Parker to be, what I think Brice Butler can be, Irwin for Dallas, Brandon Marshall was for us, epitomized by Calvin Johnson.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I view #1 WR as the guy who you want to target the most. It’s not about size, it’s about skill. Antonio Brown who I mentioned as an example is not big (5-10 180) or overly fast but he plays football very well.

I’d rather be a team that the opposing defense has no idea what you’ll do each play rather than a set in stone we know who they’re going to try to get the ball to. The Pats have set the example of this for over a decade.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

See definition #1 above. You seem to use that one to mean #1, but you say you do not want a #1 by that definition.

Fine, I get that. That is what we tried to do last year … to “replace” Landry’s production with the three-headed monster of Grant, Amendola, and Wilson.

It would’ve worked just as you say and Gase planned if 2 of the 3 had not gotten hurt, as it was, the third led the team in catches.

      • its impossible to replace Landry even with 3 players, we should have thought of this before we failed to sign Landry and brought in high priced free agents,
Amendola is not even here anymore

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Finally, some people think the term #1 WR means a certain position in the offense characterized by a usual place of lining up and filling the role in passing plays of being the outside and downfield guy.

Different schemes use different letters or numbers or names for this position. Every team has this player.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That player usually emerges organically rather than drafting the “the guy” and force feeding him because he was a 1st rd pick and we have to get him the ball whether he’s ready or not to be that guy.

Flores has said it’s a wide open camp at every position. Draft status and past success means nothing even though we all know many players are going to be here. But they will earn it. They all have to earn it. For the bubble guys, it’s not going to be easy to make this team because the competition will be high. We don’t have an established core group yet, but we have quite a few young players with high upside potential that have already shown that.

My hope for this team is a more fundamentally sound team rather than one that is trying anything it can to survive and win at any cost. We need to build a foundation of disciplined football first. Gase’s teams were not. Everyone doing their job then you add more special players to the mix.

  90. I agree with Tim. I don’t want an offense that’s relying on one guy or even two to get things done because if that one guy goes down then you’re screwed.

If we’re utilizing Parker, Stills, Wilson, Grant, Gesicki, Drake, and others in the passing game it should be much more difficult for defenses to stop us on offense than if we’re utilizing one or two guys more often.

We utilized Landry a ton and he got a lot of catches and it got us nowhere except to have a leader in catches.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Look at Dallas. If Elliot and Cooper go down, then what? Prescott isn’t an elite QB who can overcome that. They rely on their defense too. They’d have to win games 13-10 every week.

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So back to what I was saying.
I think we need a #1 WR by the 2nd definition, which is that we need a tall, big-body guy who can dominate in the red zone, because all of our other 3 best WRs are either smurfy small (Grant and Wilson) or play “light” (Stills).

Parker was drafted to be that guy, but has never fulfilled that role. This forced Landry to assume the tough guy role, one which he is not built to handle, lacking both height and weight.

He’s so tough he does it anyway, just like Edelman, which is why I loved watching Landry play.
But he was not big enough to parlay that into lots of victories for us.

  92. Lou, Patriots over utilized Edelman, and it got them somewhere we want to go

    i cant knock what works

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Listen… Landry is a hard-nosed football player and receiver with great hands. But let’s be honest, 7 catches for 60 yards and a TD here and there became pretty mundane in the big scheme of things. He didn’t elevate the team to another level. Yeah he’d make a spectacular catch and everyone would talk about it all week when in fact he had 6-52 and 0 TDs in that game. That’s $15M per year?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No, we should not have paid him that much. But even his production is gone and even if the 3 guys who replaced him caught the same number of balls, we would still not have that player to which I am referring, who can score TDs for us from less thn 20 yds.

When the field is shortened like that, Stills, Grant, and Wilson can get knocked off their routes too easily and can’t muscle into position like Anquan Bolden.

That is why I want a #1 WR by the definition of the tall, big-body guy who can dominate in the Red Zone.

  94. what if the Dolphins thought Marino was too expensive to resign in year 5, and brought in 2 other high priced FA quarterbacks to replace him, and asked another guy to change positions and play QB, lol
are 3 mediocre quarterbacks better than Marino?
    would that be ok?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That is a worthless analogy because there can only be one QB on the field at a time and the starting QB gets 99% of reps in a game barring injury..
(Unless you count silly backyard scramble plays which account for a miniscule percentage of plays). There are always 2, 3, or even 4 WRs out there.

  95. patriots didnt spread the ball around in the super bowl, they went with the top receiver , and he won the MVP because of his incredible performance

meanwhile the Dolphins did spread the ball around last year,,,, no super bowl though

its not required to have the best WR in the league, but its a huge help, and paid off with championship rings for the hated cheats

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They only scored 13 points and Edelman didn’t have a TD. RB Sony Michel did and he was the unsung hero of the game besides the defense. Just saying 😉

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow… Lou and I must be aligned within the universe at this moment. LOL

  97. I don’t want one guy catching 110 passes scoring 4 td’s. It means we’re wasting targets on a guy who isn’t a scoring threat.

  98. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I am not even remotely asking for a #1 WR by definition #1, which is the go to guy who catches 3x the number of balls as the second most guy. That’s too predictable.

I’m looking for the tall, big-body guy who can dominate in the Red Zone and score TDs for us in a compressed field by muscling up the smaller DBs.

Parker has failed us in that role, so he either needs to step up right now, or we need to go get a guy like that in next year’s draft or find one among the list i posted above.

    • well, let’s see what happens. maybe Gesicki becomes that guy in the redzone. It doesn’t always need to be a tall, big body wr who does it. It could be a TE.

i’m being patient and waiting to see what they come up with this year. whatever it is, I just can’t imagine it’s going to look anything like it was in the past on offense and we’re going to see a lot of guys getting used compared to what we’ve seen in the past.

only time I can see them using just one guy or two is if they have a favorable matchup to go with and the defense doesn’t adjust and they just keep exploiting it. otherwise, we’ve just got way too many weapons on offense to just keep going to the same one all the time.

thing is, these guys will probably all tell you they don’t care how many times they get the ball. it’s all about the team winning. I really don’t want a guy who’s all about his personal stats.

  99. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was Landry the best WR in the league last year or something? He had a fine year, but plenty of other guys on other teams had better ones. And as much as he would have cost to have kept, seems we are better off not paying the price for him till we are thinking playoffs again.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      very true

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We would be right where we are now and the new coaching staff would be stuck with middle of the road production at an elite cost. At least the last regime even thought that was nuts. Time to get over your Landry hangover folks. He’s not Jerry Rice or even Mark Clayton. LOL

If Rice is a 99 because nobody is perfect, I’d say Clayton was an 89, and Landry a 69. You don’t pay them all the same. End of story.

  100. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pretty sure Naples just wants a pretty good receiver who doesn’t smell like #2 and wears #1.

    Am I right?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sounds like he would be happy with a #2 pass option who wears #86 well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This also comes down to whoever the QB is looks to and is confident in. It can change from year to year too as we’ve seen in NE.
