Jets fire GM Mike Maccagnan, put personnel whiz HC Adam Gase in as interim GM

It’s only a matter of time Mike, only a matter of time . . . Hehehehehehe

You can’t write this stuff! It matters not what I think about Adam Gase during his tenure as Miami Dolphins Head Coach, but one thing that was clear to just about everyone was that Gase definitely has personality issues that prevent him from coexisting with others. That was a huge weakness for him, as he shipped out players who didn’t try hard enough to learn his way of doing things. I defended him during those times too, hoping it really was on the player, but it became a pattern. It’s one thing if you have a long resume of success like say Bill Belichick up in New England. He won’t get second guessed for his decisions because his track record speaks for itself. Bill Belichick has a winning percentage of .680 and a record of 261-123, while Adam Gase’s currently stands at 23-25 and .479. Not much cachet comes with that.

Try and put this in perspective. The Jets allowed Mike Maccagnan to choose the players to add to their roster during free agency, a very active free agency for the cap flush NY Jets. The Jets added RB Le’Veon Bell, LB C.J. Mosely and OL Kelechi Osemele to the tune of $225.5M, all in this recent FA period. Then they let Maccagnan choose the future of the team by running the draft. Also keep in mind the Jets made it clear that Gase would NOT have control over the 53 man roster and had no say in that regard. They said that. Now, they not only give him that as interim GM, but he’s running the entire show. Can you comprehend this? How can they possibly spin this as a positive thing?

I like the direction our team is headed. We seem to be doing everything right, with careful measured steps. Our rivals in NY seem to tripping over their tongues and making unstable decisions. Unless Adam Gase has really learned from his mistakes in Miami, the New York Jets franchise is in for some serious turbulence.

Keep doing things slow, steady and careful, and most of all . . .

When you get waived/injured in May — you ain’t really getting waived cause you are injured, even if might be. Would be different if Asiata was trying to come back from some potentially career ending injury.

  3. D's avatar D says:

We have signed center Tony Adams, guard Kyle Fuller and linebacker Nate Orchard. We have also waived/injured guard Isaac Asiata, waived center Kirk Barron and placed wide receiver Ricardo Louis on injured reserve.

When i saw Kyle Fuller i thought to myself the CB for the bears, which that was a former 1st rounder, that guy was a former 7th round selection, but he is a young guy, camp body that might find his way on our PS.

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Could we be any worse at picking Gs in the draft? And we keep taking them in the 3rd or 4th, which is so suppose to be like sure starter at least for them only to watch them fizzle while other teams have good ones picked late in the draft. Starting to think a position where whether works out doesn’t show up in combine measurements or on tape. Maybe we just take’em low every year and wait.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Asiata was a 5th, but I get your point. We haven’t hit on any of our drafted OG’s. It’s crazy

    • D's avatar D says:

Guard is a harder evaluation than LT, even though LT is a more complex skill set with more traits to evaluate. A lot of times a good OG is as much about who is next to him at OC or OT as it is on them. Thats why i think you see a lot of hits on players at OG later int he draft and a lot of misses earlier int he draft. Its not just us its the nature of that position and evaluating the ones that have NFL ability. Its also a position where there is a major leap between whats good in college vs whats good in the NFL.

  5. D's avatar D says:

Stanger, i think you could easily hit on an OG anywhere int he draft and you could just as easily miss. A round 3-4 OG is a potental starter.

here was a recent ranking of OG’s in the NFL. I stopped at the top 20.
    Dave Decastro 1st RD
    Andrew Norwell UDFA
    Zack Martin 1sr RD
    Brandon Brooks RD 3
    Joel Bitonio RD 2
    Josh Sitton RD 4
    Ronald Leary UDFA
    Kelechi Osemele RD 2
    Rodger Saffold RD 2
    Brandon Scherff RD 1
    Shaq Mason RD 4
    Kevin Zeitler RD 1
    Laurent Duvernay-Tardif RD 6
    T.J. Lang RD 4
    Joe Thuney RD 3
    Andy Levitre RD 2
    Joe Berger RD 6
    Clint Boling RD 4
    Trai Turner RD 3
    Kyle Long RD 1

You can see there is no real pattern as to what round turns into a top player.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Actually less 3rd day guys than would have thought, but it is the top 20. 64 starting guards in the league.

  6. D's avatar D says:

The knock on Orchard was that he wasnt good against the run so his ability was limited to being a pass-rush OLB. My guess is thats exactly why he hasnt caught on anywhere or lived up to his draft grade, which he was graded as a guy who had potential to be a starter in the NFL.

Alemania is a place in Germany, and apparently has a word origin that means a meeting of “all men”. So i guess the question is he going to Germany, or San Fransisco

  8. D's avatar D says:

Waive injured just matters on what responsibility financially you still are to the team. Waiving you non-injured is a cut ties, pay guaranteed money. Waived injured there is something additional they get and i cant remember what else that is.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not surprised about Asiata at all. He was so raw and undisciplined coming out of college. We simply need better players on the OL. I can’t say I’m happy to see them bringing in a bunch of retreads but we’ll see how it works out. I assume they feel their starting 5 is kinda set and these guys are coming in to see what they can do to fill out the OL roster and improve the overall quality of players.

Dammit, I really like Asiata. Great guy, but it feels like football has never been enough of a priority for him to succeed.

Orchard is another Utah guy. He can get after the QB for sure, but struggles sometimes setting an edge. Belicheat has been great at getting maximum value out of reclamation projects. Hoping Flores has that ability as well. It’s all about fitting the right pieces together and game planning them to be in the right spots.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Mike, they’re probably counting Tannenbaum.

  25. Orchard isn’t getting paid much more than a udfa, which is good. If he’s not showing it here either they can cut him loose just like everyone else did.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s the type of guy we discussed them targeting. Guys with experience trying to get their careers on track. They’re not throwing money around to has beens. Grier is staying the course. Impressive. He knows he has a lot of cap and draft capital next year to really add a jolt of talent to a team that Flores has put his stamp on and the players know how they do things here.

      • D's avatar D says:

        Low risk high potential

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! Competition and let’s see who’s still standing. That’s the transition 2019 team. The 2020 team can change dramatically.

      • you hear that low risk, high potential all the time but it’s not nearly as true as it sounds. low risk, yes, because of the contract. high potential? yet to be seen because Orchard has been on several teams after he was drafted by CLE and didn’t stick around too long.

the competition thing is nice and if he puts it together than all the better for our team but it’s hard to say it’s high potential. he has a lot to prove.

  26. I gotta feel for Asiata. Just lost a child, he’s probably having a rough time with what he’s going thru. Can’t even imagine.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, Orchard at 645K is a no risk. I have no horses in the race. I have an idea who I know will make the team but others I have no idea. That’s what I’m looking forward to.

    • I don’t either and I’m the same way. Just looking forward to seeing who makes the roster and what they can do for the team.

Orchard is a low risk guy but the high potential thing is overdone. Just because a guy is signed to a cheap contract doesn’t mean it’s a high potential situation. Orchard has never shown anything in the NFL.

The O-line is going to be very different this year. Lot’s of new faces. We’ll see.

    • I’m actually excited to see how this turns out and if the moves they made yesterday are any indication of what to expect, I’d say they’re still not even close to what it’s going to look like when they’re done.

It’s still mid May with a long way to go yet before we even hit training camp in July. A lot can happen between now and then with more cuts to come and maybe even a trade.

  30. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I still think they will trade Jones before camp starts. Probably pay part of his salary to make it happen. A 3rd next year would be good, a 2nd better.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

A 4th at this point would be fine too. It’s just about having more flexibility in next year’s draft. I’d love to get a 3rd, but I’d take a 4th

Day 2 and Charlie Weis on NFL radio still killing the Jets for firing Maccagnan. Love it!

  32. New Age's avatar New Age says:

That’s sad about Asiata. I hope he gets it together for someone. Moving towards the critical analytical side though, he had two years to do that and never came close. Maybe this is what pushes him but a 5th should never feel safe anyways. Good luck to him though.

  33. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Mike – I don’t know that a 4th is enough for Jones and certainly not a 4th a paying some of his salary.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess if we have to pay some of his salary, you’re right, not good enough. Straight up I’d do it.

      I’m a greedy oinker
      I would love to have a 2nd
I would probably take a 4th but if I did I think that would be preferable closer to the 2020 draft

The thing about trading him this early is that we should be able to increase the asking price

His salary isn’t killing us this offseason

  36. D's avatar D says:

Lou, high potential because he’s a former high round pick, so there is potential, im not saying there is a high chance he will live up to that potential. I personally feel like he may not make the roster, but when they pick these guys up, they are looking at the highs and lows. High they get a talented player on the cheap, low they dont pay much for something that winds up just wasted potential trading hands. I dont have expectations that Orchard comes in and knocks it out.

    ———————————————–
I think part of what happened to him was just losing football as a primary focus. The guy i saw on tapes was plenty good enuogh to play at an NFL level, not that im a trained eye, but he was a solid player in college. After seeing interviews and stuff with him after he was here, he displayed almost a passive nochalant attitude toward his craft, he always was positive, which is good but there didnt seem to be a fit beneath him pushing him. You play at an NFL level you have to have something driving you, and i think he honestly wasnt driven. I hate he didnt make it and i hate that he lost his child. I was really hoping that he would turn into a beast of an OG for us.

  38. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Le Cochon – I agree, they can afford his salary and don’t have to trade him. Which allows them to maximize his trade value now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would be okay with it if the value is there

But I don’t mind keeping him either

    • D's avatar D says:

The way you maximize value in a trade is to create a pressure sale situation. You either have a few different teams be negotiating for him, forcing the one with the biggest need to step up, or you wait for desperation, ie middle of the year and a team loses a safety. You but can also sweeten the deal to get a better pick out of it, like eat his part of the salary in order to get a higher value on the pick.

With Jones i think our best bet is to hold on to him at least to the trade deadline and see if between now a team, or multiple, dont find themselves in need of a top safety and are willing to give up something good for him. I dont think a 2nd would be out of the question, but it would almost have to be a perfect storm for us to get that kind of value. A 3rd seems much more likely, but even then i think we would have to have some solid leverage on our side.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sound thinking D. Only way becomes a forced sale from our side is if Reshad decides to do a Le’veon Bell. And as long as his his contract is….. he would have trade value next year as well. Which makes the see is an injury comes up or a surprise team looking to upgrade all of a sudden more of an option.

  39. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not pushing for it but the two main reasons I’d be OK with trading Reshad are his age (31) and that he seems to want it (with his contract not about money). Wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to spend the last stretch of his career on a contender.

Figure first has to be what happens in practice, but I’d be just fine if Fitz is in there and after some lumps Rosen takes over. Or if Fitz is blowing it out, then Rosen learns and his trade value remains.

Want a QB in 2020 — they’ll know whether or not to take one from practice.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – The way I see it, unless Rosen is really behind on getting the offense, or just stinking it up on the field, he should start. He’s the guy we’re investing in so we need to see what we have. As far as I’m concerned, if he’s not starting Game 1, it will be a huge disappointment if the competition was close in training camp and preseason

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One thing I will be this year is patient….. seems rebuilding gets you that. Could see a situation where not starting Rosen is what they see as best for his development even though neck and neck with Fitz. But for sure if Rosen looks like Steve Young reborn in camp and preseason is best case.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree with whatever is best for his development, but if he’s way behind Fitz, that in and of itself will disappointing. He’s a very smart guy, he should have no trouble digesting the offense. I hope he comes in hungry as hell to prove he’s the guy. If he does, I can’t imagine Fitz will be starting.

    ————————————————
I wouldn’t be worried about Rosen if he isn’t starting day 1, i do think though that if half the season is over and we aren’t at least preparing to put him in, i might be disappointed and/or concerned that he isn’t picking it up.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tell ’em Lou!

    • I can’t say how other things are going to turn out because there is probably going to be some moves in places like the o line, d line and possibly one or two other areas as well but one thing I do know is Rosen is going to be the starter and he’s going to take the offense to another level.

      • D's avatar D says:

I dont disagree that he could, im just saying if they play it ultra conservative with him and dont put him out there right away im not going to freak out and think it was a wasted trade. Im going to feel pretty ok unless we are already half way done with the season and still no Rosen. Do i believ he will be there day 1, sure, i just dont think he has to prevent a panic.

      • I could see someone like Gase going with Fitz for some dumbass reason like he’s the vet or because Rosen rubs him the wrong way and he feels he needs to knock him down a few pegs but this coaching staff isn’t going to play games.

Rosen wins the job and he’s the starter. These guys are going to stick to the plan.

I understand what you’re saying. Rosen not starting is no reason for panic but I’m not even entertaining the idea because its’ never going to happen.

We don’t even have an OL. Good luck with any QB being successful. We’re still looking under rocks. I hope we find some gems.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We have an LT and C. Seems 40% a good start….. and Davis has at least shown he can play G some. And they are at least popping in a bunch of other possibles. Figure will fill out to at least better than horrible.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mills at RT has 82 career starts and we have some new options for LG including 3rd rd pick Deiter. The OL we have doesn’t worry me as much as them staying healthy. For some reason that hasn’t been easy for us.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I could see Isaiah Prince as our RT. Still doesn’t mean think we will have a good line though.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It would be great if Prince performed well and won the RT job but most scouts felt he needs more development. We have a lot of new OL competing, a new OL coach and a new offense. Sounds to me like Flores wants to run it more than we have in the past. That helps the OL and the QB. We’ll see.

  51. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Who starts at QB isn’t really the issue if he’s going to get clobbered. I don’t think you can make a fair assessment and you might want to protect your future.

Hope the coaches and scouts can put something together.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You have to find out what your future is. I really don’t expect our O-line to be so terrible. We probably have our LT, C, and RT already, Tunsil, Kilgore and Mills. I think there’s an excellent shot Deiter steps up and becomes our LG. That leaves RG which will likely be manned by Davis. The run game will take the pressure off the offensive line too, not that Gase knew anything about that. It will be nice to have a FB too

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

This is to the point above as what’s best for development of the position and the future for the team. I wouldn’t rush to throw Rosen in. You don’t need to see him for an entire season to know what you think you have.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not as down on the line as you, but am 100% with you on that. No problem letting Rosen hold a clipboard if that seems to make sense to Flores.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And why do it under duress….he’s done that. Great. Let’s throw him back to the fire unnecessarily.

Beck, henne, Tannehill were all thrown to the wolves….how did that work out?

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I understand if Fitz starts early on because he’s a vet but I hope Lou is right about Rosen.

  53. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

My count of OL is one, Tunsil. I don’t know that we have anyone else for sure.

Didn’t Marino have Richmond Webb and Keith Simms and I think Dwight Stephenson. Or am I dreaming?

  54. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I see where we’re trying to piece this together. Want to see it….show me.

And, so hoping coaches can do this makeover.

Injuries have killed us due to no depth.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Flores and his staff want them to show me too. 😉

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Like I said if they can piece this together….max kudos. Injuries, due to no depth, then, we’re back to last year again. We have some time and do not need to press the QB issue.

If Rosen wins out right so be it but I don’t think he will beat our Fitz. Could be wrong.

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have 11 new OL on the roster so at least it’s not the same old same old. 😉

  56. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lol. Tim…and there’s that. I keep hoping for a gem.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need Deiter to be a gem. Even if he’s not ready to start right away, he’s got experience playing C, G and T so he provides a versatile game day backup where most teams carry 7.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – Marino made everyone on that line Webb, Sims, Heller, Stephenson much better than they were. I do agree we don’t need to see Rosen for a year to know what he is but what’s the difference whether he plays game one or ten? If it’s like any other year, the injuries on the O-line will have mounted later on and then you really might be throwing Rosen into the fire. I just find it very difficult to think he won’t be ready to play game 1, and that he won’t be as good as Fitz. I’ll be very surprised.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The good thing about the QB situation is we have a vet who has started a lot of games and is a smart guy, and a 2nd year former #10 pick with talent. We really did a solid job retooling the QB position. Even Rudock might have solid future backup potential. He had a good preseason last year for the Lions. I wasn’t sure we’d have as good of a situation as we do before FA.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Agreed we’re positioned well, so let’s let the best man win. No need to force the issue. There’s no good reason.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree, Rosen not starting right away wouldn’t bother me. If looking horrible was the reason that would bother me. I don’t think that will be the case though. I think he’s in a much better situation than he was in ARZ. A big reason is Jim Caldwell and Asst. QBs coach Jerry Schuplinski who’s been with NE for 6 years, was part of 3 SB titles and being around Tom Brady. He knows what really good looks like as does Flores and O’Shea.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Please, he had an all Pro OL. Oh my.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Early on Marino also had RB Nathan and FB Bennett who were good at picking up blitzes. Along with his quick release and yes a quality OL. But like Mike said, Marino made them look even better. Marino wasn’t a runner as we all know but he had exceptional pocket presence and quick feet. The combination of all of it made it good.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And the protection validates my point as a recipe for success. …as well as having weapons.

No one has ever gotten rid of the ball faster than Marino and I don’t know if there will ever be another in that regard.

He had his blind side protected for 10 years.

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Brady makes Edelman an All-Pro WR. Put him on the Buccaneers and he’s just another guy. Is it so far fetched to say Marino made Webb, Sims, Stephenson All-Pro’s? He made them better, got them a lot of recognition too. A QB who sets offensive records gets his OL some notoriety.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think it is far fetched to say Marino made the OL all pros. They were all first round picks and Simms was 2nd so the rest of the NFL must have thought so too or at least had the potential. I can’t believe I have to defend these guys credentials. I must be in the twilight zone…..hmmm…..it is twilight.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Such absolutes! I think they were all very good players, maybe even great, but it sure helps to be in the right situation too! I’m not saying these guys were bums but they played with Marino and that’s why they were All-Pros. I’d hope you can give me more credit than that. I think Edelman is a great player too, but man playing for the Patriots and having Tom Brady as his QB hasn’t hurt his career any.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No, Marino raised the bar. If we had more of a complete team during his career he’s got a bunch of rings. Even people I know who hate the Dolphins and even Marino because of their fandom say that now in hindsight. He’s one of the most lethal passers and competitive QBs we’ve ever seen. When Omar throws shade on him and he has I want to smack some sense into him. Anyone who watched Marino play knows he’s a HOF QB and that’s why he is without ever winning a SB.

  59. One of the reasons I’m not so worried about the o line is because of the quarterback. You say Marino made his line look better, well, Tannehill made his look worse. A real qb is going to make the difference

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree, and so did Gase’s offensive scheme

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When Tannehill played fast he looked like the real deal. The problem was he also was too patient and indecisive. He always reminded me of a pitcher with good stuff who can’t put it altogether. Instead of 18-8 2.85 he was 14-12 3.85. Not bad but not an ace. I know you don’t view him as even that, but that’s how I view the wrap up of his Dolphins career. He’s a solid starter and quality backup, but not a franchise guy. The market for him proved that.

  60. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Of course Marino raised the bar….what were all those isotoner gloves commercials he gave to his linemen. I think if you would ask Marino he would tell you his protection and so would Brady.

  61. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Anyway, like I said I hope we can put something together so we can fairly assess the QB and give them time to emerge before they get killed. That’s all I’m saying and hoping for.

We probably have our LT, C, and RT already, Tunsil, Kilgore and Mills.
    ————————————————–
I am not as worried about our OL as I was 2-3 months ago. The signing of Mills was solid. He actually graded higher than James in pass protection on the right side. James graded better in run blocking. We don’t lose anything pass pro wise from that right side. Just need some people to step up for those guard positions. Tunsil, Deiter, Kilgore, Davis, Mills would be fine and no worse than last year. We just won’t run it to the right side. LOL

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yesssssss! 2-2 going back to San Jose.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Don’t rule out some of these other OL either. One of them could step up like Tony Adams. I wanted us to draft him last year. He was part of that stellar NCState OL that made Finley look better than he was in 2017. I believe Adams was a 4 year starter and did not allow a sack in his whole college career and allowed only 10 pressures in 460 pass play snaps his senior season.

    • exactly. we need pass protection on the right side and if Mills can provide that we’re much better off than we were before. in addition, Mills graded better at run blocking when he first came into the league than he did when he went to BUF.

then, for some reason, his grades flip flopped. but, the pass protection is our #1 concern. if he was good at run blocking at one point he can probably regain that with the right coaching.

  67. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    OL….

How much worse can it be? Last year we never got to really see it with the injuries…..
So….health is all I am worried about. Relatively healthy and they should be at least average and that’s a huge step forward.

And I find the articles and comment pretty IRONIC!

Thanks for the chuckle this morning!

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    FYI guys

The trump administration and the border control have already backed off that plan to dump detained immigrants (and it may have never been a plan just a bluff)

The border control announced they have no plans to do that

I’m pretty sure it is illegal to take hundred of people and transport them where you want them each week…

It would be legal to transport people who are detained to other detention centers
So they can do that in south fla – but that wouldn’t affect the community

But they can’t grant them asylum and then transport them

Generally that’s not how asylum works
If you asylum is denied (which is close to 80% of them as far as I know) you are deported

If your it’s granted you are granted residency status (not legal citizenship for at least a another 3 years)

We don’t have do detain asylum seekers but we often do (and have been doing it before trump)

So it doesn’t make sense that there is a legal vehicle to take people who were detained
Move them to another place and release them
Unless you decided you weren’t going to detain them pending an asylum hearing anymore (which is possible but is inconsistent with what we’ve been doing)

You can’t grant people residency and then move them against their will
    That’s kidnapping

If you deny residency you deport them not move them to another part of the US

And if the determination is still pending – they stay in a detention center

The only variation I can see on this is if they suddenly decided to release people pending a hearing which is completely inconsistent with what this administration has done and a lot of immigration advocates would love that

The trump admin bluffs and trolls a lot to get reactions from people
So I think this is all that it was

Honor, integrity, taking it issue by issue….. that’s what the people I respected the most had. Ended up giving to the campaigns of a number of folks met after from each party. Cause they were the folks who took helping the people of their district/city, etc above whether there was a D or R next to their name on election day.
