Do you feel the Dolphins are heading in the right direction? This guy does . . .

These 2 guys. The one on the right has done an excellent job this offseason. He took care of things very responsibly with the amount of draft capital he had available, managing to fill two huge needs, DT and QB. Drafting Christian Wilkins in RD 1 (Pick#13) was a good marriage. Christian Wilkins may not be the most talented DT in the draft, but he’s just a shade off in that department, behind Quinnen Williams and possibly Ed Oliver. Where Christian Wilkins shines is his leadership abilities and quality personality traits. We need a great defensive tackle, but we also need a guy who does things the right way. We had a great DT for a while here in Miami, Ndamukong Suh. Did he ever make the team better? Did anyone on the team get better because of him? Never. Suh with all his talent isn’t a team player, he’s a ME player. He’s a sellsword, if Game Of Thrones references help explain things. Grier traded our 2nd RD pick (after trading back to #62 and acquiring a 2020 2nd RD pick) to the Arizona Cardinals for QB Josh Rosen. I can’t tell you at this point that Josh Rosen will be our franchise QB for the next decade or more, but I do think he will be our starting QB game 1, and we’ll be a better team for it.

Brian Flores is not Bill Belichick. Sure, he learned how to conduct business from watching Bill, but he’s not a clone. He’s a no nonsense guy, tough, and like Bill Belichick, he’s not giving out too much info, so if he’s learned anything, that’s a good trait to pick up. I think everyone on the team instantly respects Flores. He has a commanding presence, but he’s not abrasive like Adam Gase. He’s not arrogant like Adam Gase. Take Minkah Fitzpatrick, who before the season wanted to know where specifically he will be playing, either CB or S, so he could train his body accordingly, either gain weight and muscle to play S, or lose it and become quicker to play CB. The answer is Minkah will be playing more positions than he did even last season, and “LB” may be added to the list. Not LB in the sense that in a normal 3-4 or 4-3 base formation he will be playing LB, but in a multiple DB formations like nickel, dime and quarter he may be the LB. Minkah is one of our best players and Flores knows this, and wants to keep him on the field as much as possible.

I think we have a lot of players now that other teams didn’t look at as treasures but we’re looking at them as possible answers. OL Chris Reed is one of those guys. Right now he’s going to compete at LG, but he can play each of the interior OL positions. We drafted Michael Deiter, and he’s in the competition to play LG as well, but he’s going to have to beat out Chris Reed. Even if Deiter wins the job, Reed gives us better depth than we had last year. Nate Orchard is another one of those guys. The Seahawks recently signed DE Ziggy Ansah, which made the 5 year veteran Orchard disposable. The Dolphins picked him up because they think he can help their pass rush. Orchard racked up 18.5 sacks his Senior year at Utah so he can rush the passer. He just hasn’t found the right fit. Both Flores and Orchard feel they may have finally found it. Putting people in situations to succeed. That’s what Flores will do. Orchard isn’t much against the run, so Flores will try to improve that, but also try and put Orchard in more pass rushing situations to make better use of his talents.

On a bad note, Reshad Jones still M.I.A. not in MIA. The minicamp that begins June 4th is NOT voluntary, that’s mandatory, so we’ll see if Reshad Jones wants to be a part of this team or not. Regardless, it’s not a great look that Reshad isn’t here now, I hope he doesn’t make this a huge conflict. While he’s not really a part of the future of this team, if he’s here I want him to play well, and if we want to trade him, I want to get top value for him. Staying away from the team accomplishes neither.

Back to Josh Rosen. So far he’s doing everything right, not taking anything for granted, not doing anything except what’s expected of him. He hasn’t made any bold proclamations, and he shouldn’t. He should just let his actions do the talking, work hard every day, learn this offense as well as he can, and work hard with his teammates and hopefully those things allow him to earn the starting QB spot. It won’t be handed to him, Flores has made that clear. Still, I believe Josh Rosen will earn it, and will be our starting QB, and I believe he will redeem himself this season.

GO DOLPHINS!

    Sir
You Canadians like that pseudosport that doesn’t even have a ball, don’t you?

Is it not true that 83% of all goals scored in hockey are just blind luck?

I quit watching it when they replaced the human goalies with those robo-manikins hidden under 6 layers of armor and upholstery.

Gimme the real men with no front teeth, an eye patch, and visible stitches scars.

Memorial Day — people lost there lives so we can type on this blog. Far as I know no one in my family ever did, but then our collective family only goes back so far. Pretty sure none in since WWI though…. a number served but they ended up in non-combat roles.

  5. Battle of the Devins! Lol why not

Room opinion, Who is the better Devin

Bush or White? And why? Thanks

I feel they are very similar in size and athletic ability, but notable differences too

    Similarities
    Size
    Athletic ability
    Pash rush skills
    Run stop skills
Lateral coverage, sideline to sideline, both are faster than TE, and almost as fast as most RB.

    Differences
White prefers the bear hug tackles, and is stripping the ball or attempting too on every one
White pass rush is straight to the QB, not a lot of batted balls

Bush is more mental, he reacts quicker to plays because he’s lined up in better positions, and reacts better and faster than White
When Bush rushes the QB, he keeps his eyes on the prize at all times, and if the QB releases the ball before Bush gets there, Bush will use his forty inch vertical to go up and bat passes down.

Both will be excellent at the next level, but White is in Tampa, and Bush is in Pitt.

    So who is the best?
Tough one, but I feel Bush mentally reacts a little faster , so slight edge to Bush.
    BUT
I also feel Bush is in a better situation in Pitt , and may have greater overall success than White on a shitty TB team

So Bush will have the better NFL career IMO

  6. The reason I was thinking about the Devins is,

This team really needs a guy like this next year, we will likely have to use our first round pick to get s top caliber LB, but both Tampa and Pittsburgh seem giddy with their choices.

Pittsburgh doesn’t trade up often for defenders, last time Was 2003 for Troy polamalu. They only trade up , when they are certain the guy will be an impact defender

They are certain they have the leader to their defense now, and with their offense, they are a tough team to beat if they put it all together

Our team is rounding into form, but next years draft is loaded with picks, and will be vital in how fast the rebuild can go, and how far can we advance in the playoffs

our secondary is in decent shape, and Wilkins is a huge addition on the DL.
We get a top LB, like one of the Devins, and a damn good edge rusher, and our defense should be able to hang with the best IMO

Memorial Day — people lost there lives so we can type on this blog.
    —————
    Home died?

  8. Ken says:

    Happy Memorial Day everyone

  9. I do appreciate the brave Men and Women that served this country , but Memorial Day is tough, while it’s important to remember the ones that gave all, it’s also important to remember the ones that are still here. We do with Veterans Day.

I don’t wish anyone to have a happy Memorial Day though, it’s not a Day intended for happy, but for respect to American Heroes

  10. What I meant was, lol

It’s fine to be happy today, but Memorial Day shouldn’t be the reason for it, because what it is.
And no ones happy at the passing of brave US Veterans on our side.

But there are other reasons to be happy, and still honor our heroes that gave all for Us

    • stangerx says:

Think you said it just fine. We have fun at the beach, by the pool, wherever but it is a day for respect.

  11. stangerx says:

RIP Bill Buckner — always felt bad for him that one play ended up defining his career. Was a pretty darn good one. Even if for sure the Metskies on here will never forget that day.

  12. Mike E. says:

    RIP Bill Buckner

  13. RIP Buckner, but i did root for the Mets that season. .

and true that brain fart error was so horrible it defined his career
it wouldnt have been so bad if it werent such a routine grounder, and it was game 6 of the world series

MLB likely has thousands of errors every season, yet one like this gets remembered forever

  14. Mike E. says:

FWIW – Mookie Wilson always contended he was going to beat Buckner to the bag even if he fielded the ball cleanly.

    • stangerx says:

You watched it, I watched it, Tim watched it — not a chance. Might give Bill B some cover on why he miffed it though.

      • Mike E. says:

I’m not sure about that. Mookie busted it out of the box right away, and Buckner was not fleet of foot to begin with, he went down to get the grounder, he would have had to come up and race to the bag. Looks to me like he was at least 10 feet from the bag, probably 15′, and his momentum was going towards the first base line, not to the bag.

      • Tim Knight says:

Buckner was basically playing on one leg. He wasn’t moving well and they also discussed why he was even out there because of that. I think Mookie would have beaten him to the bag. The Mook was one of the fastest players ever from home to first.

  15. stangerx says:

MIke E — he was real close to the base. Even as the ball is going on after the miff no Mookie in sight.

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s a tough angle to show depth. He’s closer to the back of the diamond than he is to the bag. Also remember the game was already tied. People tend to think the Mets won the WS on that play, but it was game 6.

      • Mike E. says:

He’s about 3′ at most from the lip of the infield, so he’s not close to the base, even from that angle.

  16. Mike E. says:

2 things we’ll never be sure of, whether Mookie would have beat Buckner to the bag and how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop Pop

    • stangerx says:

He fields it clean and at least no score. That much we do know.

    • Tim Knight says:

My two friends and I were watching this game and we were suppose to go to a bar afterwards to meet up with one of my friends sister and other friends. We were so bummed and didn’t even want to go out thinking we were going to lose. Then this happened and we couldn’t have been more thrilled. When we got to the bar we all raised our arms as we entered and the entire place cheered and were already celebrating. It was one of the most emotional sports moments of our lives and we hadn’t even won the WS yet.

  17. stangerx says:

I watched it at the time and 20 times since. Always thought a play that should have been made and sort of routine. But maybe didn’t count in that Mookie then would have taken up GInn on his fastest man alive challenge now. 🙂

  18. Mike E. says:

I was in a bar with my friends in the city called Jimmy Days and we were many a pitcher into it at that point. What I do remember pretty vividly because it pissed me the F off was when they named Boston 2B Marty Barrett WS MVP before the game was actually over. I just remember when we walked out of that bar, the city was electric, people were high fiving each other, cars were beeping their horns, people were just so happy, and not destructive at all. It was just fantastic.

    • Tim Knight says:

We were in Windsor, NY and though not the city the same stuff was going on. It was just fantastic like you said. I want to have that feeling again with the Dolphins some day. 🙂

  19. pheloniusphish says:

You girls talking about Corn Hole?

  20. stangerx says:

1986 was in college watching the game in Mass (so yeah Sox country). Was at a buddy’s house and his Dad was up for the weekend (both from Boston and Red Sox fans). Dad was a real blunt/tough guy. Every time my friend had a cigarette he gave him serious and loud shiot (guess what Dad’s do). Ball goes through the legs and the Dad turns to his son — “give me a smoke.”

  21. wyoming85 says:

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s a playmaker and everyone in the league knows it. He can score from anywhere with the ball in his hands however he gets it. I don’t think he’s a bell cow but I want him touching the ball in the 15 times range every week – 10 rush, 3-4 rec and 1-2 KR.

I can see a RB by committee with Drake, Ballage and Gaskin. Hopefully Cox becomes our lead blocking FB and occasional short yardage back. Maybe Wilkins too. LOL

  22. Tim Knight says:

Wyo, watching the Pats operate on offense they play high percentage plays most of the time and then take some shots. Brady was trained early on just keep it simple, don’t make mistakes and make the big throw when it’s there. If Rosen can play that way he’ll be our starting QB because he has more talent than Fitz. He has a much better arm.

  23. D says:

I don’t think Mookie would have beat him but it would have been close. At least Mookie wasn’t just bragging because like I said I think it would have been close. Of course though the Mets fans are gonna act like that wasn’t a gift from the baseball Gods

    • Mike E. says:

All I can say to that is did Gronk make the tackle on the Miami Miracle?

      • D says:

Sure didnt and ill take that little gift just as im sure you guys are happy with yours. You did get a little more from Mets one though.

  24. wyoming85 says:

    • D says:

Lol in my mind i got a picture of McCain and that crazy hair wearing safety goggles and a lab coat with a backdrop of the rest of the team in their lab coats and goggles all doing diffrent lab type functions like swirling beakers, etc.

  25. Mike E. says:

D – My point was even though it appeared as if Gronk had position to make the play, just like you guys are assuming Buckner did if he cleanly fielded the ground ball, you still have to win the footrace to the bag, and Buckner had a bad leg, so there’s no given. It doesn’t matter now, but I do believe there was a chance Mookie could have beaten that out.

    • D says:

Its not really an argument to have because it didnt happen and there is no way to know for usre, its only perspective on the play. FWIW i do like the Red Sox as far as one of my AL team, but mostly because they give the Yankees hell. Still i didn’t have a dog int hat fight and im usually one to pull for the NL over the AL in the world series, so im kind of glad that happened. I still think that was an iconic play that was literally proof of baseball gods. That shit was over and then boom, it wasn’t and boom now its night night for the Sox. It is sad that Buckner never really lived down that one play, but to me its more about that play living on than his muff of the ball living on. Anyon that has played on the infield knows that you get a squibber every once anda while that is almost unfieldable. Poor guy was on the receiving end of the baseball gods stepping in and making a path to a Mets WS win.

  26. wyoming85 says:

    • D says:

Awwww he can be close to his dear friend. Anyone wanna take bets to see if he is murderedduring the 2019 season and by what game?

  27. Tim Knight says:

D, not that the Buckner play wasn’t a fortunate break for the Mets, but that’s not the reason the Mets won the WS. Like I said before, the game was already tied so nobody knows what would have happened if Boston got out of the inning. The Mets also had to win game 7 which they did. It was an exciting season for sure.

The Houston series was just as nuts. The Mets knew they had to win that series in 6 because they couldn’t hit Mike Scott all year. They won game 5 by one run in 12 innings and game 6 by one run in 16 innings. Crazy stuff.

    • Mike E. says:

Tell ’em Tim! Enough of this “lucky” garbage! They got 4 hits in a row to tie the damn game!

      • Tim Knight says:

Exactly! That was a huge part of the drama. I remember my one friend saying when Carter got up, yeah okay Gary let’s pop up like you always do to lose the series. LOL

      • Mike E. says:

It was actually 3 hits, they tied the game on a wild pitch. Pressure got to them, they felt it slipping away . . .

      • Tim Knight says:

        Mitchell, Carter and Knight?

  28. wyoming85 says:

  29. Mike E. says:

Tim – Carter started the 2 out rally with a single, then Mitchell singled and then Knight singled. Carter scored on Knight’s single, then Mitchell scored to tie it on the wild pitch by Schiraldi. You know what happened next

We signed Marc Walton this offseason who was arrested 3 times within a few mos of each other

      • stangerx says:

Boundary is where he should not be, but still thinking should be more a FS….. even if the scheme might be more five or six guys “back there.” And McCain is a real good slot. Don’t think either Jones or TJ are that centerfielder.

      • wyoming85 says:

Not only has his best football all come at slot cornerback, but Fitzpatrick’s play elsewhere shouldn’t push anyone to switch things up. He earned sub 60.0 overall and coverage grades at outside cornerback, free safety and box* in 2018

  35. wyoming85 says:

  36. Tim Knight says:

Minkah was also a rookie asked to do a lot of things. I wouldn’t look at his ratings playing here and there based on one season and say nope, he can’t play there. I highly doubt the coaches view it that way either.

    ——————————————-
He play on the outside in college and he was pretty good there. I think he is best as a FS but the guy has good instincts for any of the DB positions.

    • Mike E. says:

He played below average last season with us when he played CB on the outside. That’s all I was talking about. He might improve if he’s given the chance, but I think he’s better suited inside, either in the slot or at safety

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s why I think the coaches want him to learn all of the DB positions, because he has that unique ability. He moved around last year a lot mostly due to injuries in the secondary. This year hopefully it’s more about scheme.

  39. stangerx says:

It’s May 28…. you’al know what that means. Still sticking with Fuddruckers as the best, but heard good things about In-N-Out even if never tried.

I’m not sure if they are all like this, but the one that used to be by my office would display the beef while you were in line. The meat market smell was less than appetizing too.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think they’re all different based on how well they’re managed. The one I went to was awesome. The reason I think they closed was due to so many burger places opening up and location hurting them. They were on a highway that probably made some people say nah… I’ll go to Five Guys that’s half the distance away.

  41. Rockphin says:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-miami-doesnt-need-to-get-creative-with-minkah-fitzpatricks-usage

This front office just seems to always step on it’s own crank. You make McCane the highest paid slot corner in nfl history and then draft the best slot corner in college….

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s a passing game league, right? You want them to invest heavily in what position?

      • Rockphin says:

There is only one slot CB on the field at a time and only in nickle or dime so not even as much as perimeter CB’s or safeties. They had just shored up the position with big $ and then “filled it again”

Not that i don’t like or appreciate Fitz but neither he nor McCane play their best on the outside. We have two very good slot corners and an unknown on the opposite side from X and two aging safeties

a more successful front office might have considered these things.

Rock, I think you’re getting too crazy about the secondary depth. Maybe we move a player for draft capital but injuries happen too. I still think trading Reshad Jones in June is very possible. His age and contract do not fit the direction of this team. Fans may not like that we take a 2020 4th or 5th for him but a lot of it will be about a cap clearing move. Jones not showing up for OTAs was a sign. A deal might already be in place.

      ****************

There was a point last season when we had a bunch of DB’s injured, Tank, Armstrong, McTyer, so Fitz was playing outside at CB. Ask Sonny, he wanted Fitz to be our starting CB opposite X. I remember it pretty well, he was giving up too many catches, sometimes being cautious and giving too much cushion, then other times compensating and coming up tight and then the receiver went by him.

I also don’t think the Minkah pick was as much a “no brainer” as some others think, I would have been thrilled with Tremaine Edmunds. I’m not hating on Minkah, I just think we here at FMU really overrate the guy. It’s understandable, we want so badly for him to succeed, and I do too, but I don’t think as a pro he’s earned anywhere being considered great yet.

Does anyone here have PFF? Wyo? If you have it, does it give you the splits on how many snaps Minkah played outside at CB?

I’m to cheap to pay for the premium!

But I did like the article! ( that was just a copy / paste paragraph from it )

I was all in on the Edmunds train! But I’d have to say it is revisionist history if anyone says Minkah was not ranked higher by almost everyone! Myself included.

      • Mike E. says:

Not trying to change history at all, I was just stating my opinion on the two players. I know where Minkah was ranked, but we also had already had Reshad and T.J., but at LB, man we could have used Tremaine Edmunds.

I think we might have found a gem in Baker.

Wyo, what were you referring to?

Oh how I love it when folks get all uptight about nature and stuff! 🙂

Food gathering and preparation is not a pretty business!

So when folks get bent out of shape because it’s not “perfect” for them at the store it makes me chuckle!

      I love Irony!

  72. Mike E. says:

D – I just caught something from that Minkah article from PFF – He played at least 90 snaps at outside CB.

  73. Mike E. says:

Wyo – Talk about irony – How ironic would it be if DeVante Parker, who drafted 14th overall 4 years ago never pans out as that big red zone WR, despite trying as hard as they could to give him every opportunity to succeed, even giving him one more year to do it. Preston Williams who we pick up as an undrafted free agent may turn out to be that guy. Long way to go, but that would be pretty ironic

  74. Mike E. says:

Tim – How about McMillan, Baker and Edmunds? It moved just thinking about that trio. lol

  75. Randy says:

    MikeE,
I wanted Derwin James instead of Minkah! I think Minkah will be fine, but I felt James had a chance to be a superstar. I wish they would just put Minkah at FS and leave him alone.

    • Mike E. says:

I hear that. James was also an explosive player. Definitely a playmaker. In any case, there you have it, it wasn’t a unanimous choice for Minkah.

  76. wyoming85 says:

I’m not generally inclined to play the “what if” game.

I have a lot of them!

But it doesn’t change anything in the real world.

I’d rather try to figure out how to get from NOW to where you want to be.

  77. Tim Knight says:

    Now things are getting interesting.
