Naples — you gonna come to the Fest? No real rush on a final say but gonna be ordering the food for Dave & Busters real soon.

  2. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Thinking Justin Bieber has musical talent (or Pit Bull,if you prefer) proves that there is other life than the one we know how to define.

My uncle thinks no rock musician has talent.
He is correct, insofar as he defines musical talent.
He just needs to get a life.
(He has two doctorates, but still thinks Mozart makes music but not McCartney.)

    Bingo.
… If you guys expand the definition of life to include whatever the hell we find out there,
is that really life or is it just Rap, and not really mjusic at all, just us being all PC and saying yeah don’t be so lifist, man let ’em live. Accept that rock that rusts and amalgmates with that other rock that phosphoresces as just a same geo marriage and quit being so narrow-minded. Those rocks have feelings too you know.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Your Uncle is a snob. LOL

A guy I worked with told me one time he has a friend that believes the only real music that exists came from Peter Gabriel. LMAO!!!! Yeah okay! LMAO!!!! This is the theory of crazy arrogant humans. LOL

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

My uncle is definitely a snob about music.
He is a Methodist though, so he is not an interpersonal snob.
        Which is weird.
He has a PhD from Yale in
accepting everyone into the communion of worshipers.

Again, that is an example of what you guys are telling me.
I am a snob about what life is, so i can’t see the possiblilities.

In my mind, I am like Uncle Paul.
Not a snob, but just a guy with really high standards
about what music is (in his mind)
or what life is (in my mind).

I don’t want to think of some cute little bacteria on some other planet as life.
I wanna see some DEs we can get in a Dophins uni. That’s LIFE to me.

    • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

So, if I understand you, your definition requires a philosophical as a physical definition of what constitutes life?

I waffle between not possible and slightly possible on attending the Fest right now.

I thoroughly enjoyed it last time and deeply respect your work in organizing it.
D & B’s was the high point (because the Lions game sucked so bad).
So i totally want to be there. Just can’t see it happening given my circumstances.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All you can do is tell it like it is, and thanks for that. You and your wife awesome though. Hope you can make. And won’t tell Chef Warren you said D & Bs was better than the tailgate. 🙂

I figure the tailgate is an event in of itself, but get what you mean about that game. And over the years no doubt about the difference btwn a win and a loss when we meet back up after.

Kong, I just watched a show on Jupiter on SCIgo and it was really interesting. Jupiter wanders off it’s orbit of the sun all the time. The astrophysicist commentators said if Jupiter decides to go too far off course bad news for us.

In the big scheme of things, not only do we all know someday we will all die, so will the sun and the earth.

Definite possibility for microbial life (at least) beneath the surface. If we find life on Europa, two sources of life in one solar system, to me that would mean the universe is likely teeming with life. And frankly that makes more sense to me, than a dead lifeless universe.

He will then travel 100 years forward, and start codifying anything deemed ‘musical’ throughout the human race, labeling and identifying all, thereby becoming the progenitor and founder of all music forms and concepts. lol

  12. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

    Who created classical music?

It all started with the fart. In the days before instruments were invented, ancient man was impressed the musical notes that could be produced by ones sphincter. Ancient man was impressed by the different notes and pitches produced based on amount of pressure, tightness of sphincter or even the impact of an inflamed hemorrhoid. It was only until man couldn’t fart on command that he started to invent instruments to mimic the farts. When ancient man invented instruments he learned he can actually put many different notes together vs. only several notes when farting. Then, classical music was soon born. Ancient man used their musical sphincters to impress their women so much that it became encoded in our DNA. This is why, even today, we all like to fart in front of our wives. It’s true, look it up. 😉

We are the children of light.
As long as it’s here, we can party non-stop.
When it’s gone, we’re gone in the same moment.

Of course, man’s genius enables us to ruin everything.
Even free power, infinite life, and the energy to make margaritas.

And yet we invent pain, suffering, hatred, and sin.

First game is home against Atlanta. That is going to be so important.
I’d like to see Rosen play a lot, certainly enough to figure stuff out about him.

And for him to get real-time reps.

For us this year, playing Rudock in pre-season is truly meaningless
unless the coaches have already decided stuff and
are just protecting their QB1 and QB2 from injury.

Or, they have decided to see if they can cut Fitz and go with Rosen and Rudock for the season.

So many questions at QB this year.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was very up in the air with Durant. I’m not sure what type of player he’ll be after the achilles injury. I would have been OK with him and I’m definitely OK without him. I didn’t want Kyrie Irving. I could see the Nets having buyers remorse if those 2 guys can’t stay healthy. Irving is out pretty often, and now you have a 32YO player coming back from an achilles injury in a sport where you never stop, and explosion is key. I’d be super thrilled if we could somehow snare Kawhi Leonard. I don’t want them to just sign anyone, so if they can’t get Kawhi, I’d prefer they stay patient and keep building through the draft until there are free agents worth signing next year, possibly Anthony Davis.

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“players may report to a team’s training camp no earlier than 15 days prior to the team’s first scheduled preseason game” NFL Rulebook.
    First game is Aug. 8.
So Miami can only start on 7/24 at the earliest. Their first listed practice is 7/25. They list 10, and do not list the first Monday and the second Saturday and Sunday plus the day before the game.
That’s the five days off the 15.

So they show 10 practices before the first game with the possibility of only 4 additional.
I doubt that they will never give the guys a day off.
Probably they will have meetings some of those 4 days.

They still have no more than a dozen practices.

I still think that’s not much of a Training Camp before the first game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s what the players wanted and bargained for. If they had their choice they’d have no camp and just come into work the week of the first preseason game.

Camp is for young players trying to latch on. The vets all work out on their own, when they aren’t in the building.

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The NBA is too top heavy. These $40+M contracts are outrageous and guaranteed. Let’s hope the NFL doesn’t go to guaranteed contracts as the norm.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s heading that way. The amount of guaranteed money in the bigger contracts lately have increased substantially. All it will take is a few teams getting burnt and it will swing the other way again.

    • D's avatar D says:

Pretty soon it will be 3on 3 because they aren’t going to be able to afford to play 6on 6 anymore

  50. D's avatar D says:

Would y’all be upset though if it was the Knicks signing those guys and not Brooklyn?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would try and be excited and hope for the best, but an achilles injured Durant and an oft injured Kyrie would not have been my choice. If the Knicks can just not be like the NY Mets and not always try for the quick fix, I think eventually they can actually field a competitive team by continuing to build through the draft. I like some of their young core, I like Robinson, Knox and I hope Barrett is the real deal. The Knicks have 2 1st RD picks next year, and if Kristaps doesn’t reach “unicorn” status then it’s possible it’s a high pick from Denver.

Have to assume that in the NFL everything is up for grabs when you go into contract negotiations. Total amount, structure, guarantees, whether they serve your favorite bottled water on the plane. Think the players (top ones at least) are getting smarter in concentrating on the “for sure” money. Huge dollar amounts that hit the headlines are great, but if you can get cut what’s it matter?

Today is July 1, which means it’s Bobby Bonilla Day.

“On July 1 of every year from 2011 to 2035, the New York Mets have and will write a $1.19 million check to former player Bobby Bonilla.” And all cause he turned $5.9 mil in owed salary into a long-term deal.

    • D's avatar D says:

Kyrie played 67 games last year. He’s missed games in his career but nothing really unsual IMO

Durant was injured during the finals and that injury might end up being nothing.

Are you sure you aren’t nitpicking these guys to soften the blow

The Nets might be the best team in the East next year after those 2 signings – those are 2 very good players – and they didn’t give up any of their young players to sign them

    • D's avatar D says:

Achilles is a big injury for a BBall player, but it is for DE’s too and Wake has recovered from a couple without a lot of drop off.

  55. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

when the Nets gave away all those picks for pierce and garnett look how it worked for them, is this history repeating itself? getting an injured Durant and a problem child in Irving?

even with a healthy durant i dont think they are a championship team, durant had westbrook and harden and couldn’t get it done. the splash bros had a lot to do with durants success.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hard not to think of that trade at this point. And would be saying the same if was a healthy Durant. Seems Nets see next year as a get ready for Kevin one.

  56. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Seems Miami is trading Whiteside to the Blazers

  57. D's avatar D says:

Yeah, the Bonilla contract was really a right place right time sore of thing. Bonilla owed 5.9mil, Madoff tells them he can turn that 5.9 into 60mil, Bonilla makes money by getting a 28.5 to re-do the contract and the Mets get (or think they will get) 60mil in return for 28.5. Instead the 5.9 mil investment, goes poof, so the mets are out the 5.9 and the 28.5 and Bonilla gets to look like the most schrewd businessman ever, even though there was 0 chance to lose for him, unless of course he didnt have an inheritance clause in the deal that made it expire when he did. As i understand it though, there is a clause for his family to get the pay outs even after he passes. Probably why the Mets havent had him bumped off

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

When first read about it thought Bonilla had a great agent who basically set up his retirement plan not matter what came down the road. And Bonilla had made plenty of millions at that point. So he could wait for it to kick in.

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – No, I’m just being honest. I was discussing this before Durant went to the Nets. The guy we all wanted was Kawhi Leonard. Once Durant got hurt, we all decided we didn’t want to take a chance on Durant and the only way I would have taken Kyrie Irving is if he came w/Durant because Durant wanted him, but that was before he ruptured his achilles. It makes for exciting news for the Nets, but I think there’s a pretty decent chance they may be sorry once all is said and done. We’ll see how it works out.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Discussing it with my 2 Knicks fan friends.

    • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

Agreed- similarly, I think the Lakers are likewise in a bag position with a 35 y/o LeBron- Anthony Davis is really good, but he can’t carry that team when LeBron can’t play and they won’t be able to afford the cast it would require to make that possible.

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Wake doesn’t have to run back and forth 1000x per game like they do in basketball. If he can’t explode like he used to then it’s likely Durant won’t be as good as he was. Whether that’s good enough or not remains to be seen. Believe me, I’ll be watching because I’m curious as hell to see how he does and what could have been for the Knicks.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bart Scott said on the radio if Julip Jones who had an achilles injury can come back KD should be able to. Yes basketball players run a lot, but not the same torque and push off as WRs who run like 4 miles every game.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

When did Julio Jones ever rupture his achilles? Even if he did, I don’t think WR’s have to run back and forth as much basketball players do. They don’t have to run 50′ and then stop, and run 50′ back the other direction all game.

      • D's avatar D says:

It’s about explosive push off that’s why I drew the comparison to Wake. Different muscles involved with the running back and forth and the Achilles isn’t really stressed in the back and forth

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just going by what Bart Scott said, I don’t remember Jones with an achilles either and didn’t look it up. Maybe early in his career? Basketball players jog a lot of the time and then settle into their positioning, WR’s run more hardcore routes 20+ yards as in much more extreme torque. I get his point. They’ve come along way in Achilles injury repair. Back in the day you were done.

Just saw that KD and Kyrie both took less money than the Knicks were offering to sign with the Nets because DeAndre Jordan wanted to join them but not with the Knicks. She they took less so they could bring him in. Jordan spent the last season with the Knicks and basically told them they didn’t want any part of that. Damn

OD – The Mets can go one of 2 directions. They can really start losing and then trade a few of their players which would then make them a strong candidate to compete for last place. They could also win a few here and there and hover a few games under .500 or close enough to .500 not to pull the plug. I think the former is more likely than the latter though

it’s amazing that with their payroll they suck!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They continue to add bad contracts year after year, it’s amazing. They’re saddled with Cano for $81M for the next 4 years. They did this because they thought it was worth it to get Diaz, and they also figured Cano would be serviceable or better for at least 2 years. As per usghe, any former AL all star 2B the Mets acquire at the end of their career (Alomar, Baerga), they fall a cliff in production.

  86. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Tim Knight can’t understand the connection between the Mets and Ross.
    Why am I NOT surprised??
One of Ross’s first hires was a former BASEBALL GUY who Ross sent to Tallahassee to try to get the State of Florida to fund a big percentage of the cost of updating the Dolphins football stadium. This baseball guy (whose name has escaped me) failed miserably. The Republican controlled legislature wouldn’t even put the issue up for consideration!! Ross ripped the Republicans, promising to back their opponents in upcoming elections. Eventually, Ross let go this baseball guy who returned to an executive role with another franchise! But, the message was clear.
    —————
TO WIT: If you are a failed baseball guy, Steve Ross just might have a job for YOU! And the Mets seem to have their share of “failed baseball guys” in the FO.
    GOT IT????????

    • D's avatar D says:

OD, i swear that you can make anything circle back around to Ross and his management of the Dolphins, and many times, this one included, it amazes me how you traverses it from point a to point Ross. Ill admit you generally have a path, however subjective the pathway might be lol.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THE NAME OF THAT FAILED “BASEBALL GUY” Ross hired is Mike Dee, who had failed as an exec of the Padres before Ross hired him to be CEO of the Miami Dolphins — a job he seemed unqualified for given his lack of NFL experience. Ross hired Dee to be his henchman in Tallahassee and to do “other projects.” During his time here, Dee uttered the memorable words “No improvements will be made on the Dolphins stadium unless public financial support is part of the overall project.” Well, Dee didn’t stay around long enough to see the lie in his words. Ross fired him before announcing his plan to modernize Sun Baked Stadium AT HIS OWN EXPENSE.

        —–
dEE LATER JOINED THE rED sOX fo, THUS ENDING HIS FAILED CAREER IN THE nfl.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

OD — sorta of happy how that worked out, even if not how Ross intended. He put a whole bunch of money into the stadium he owned and now even more to make it work for the Miami open. And all that means the Dolphins are here to stay in South Florida.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, the Mets have their ups and downs for sure, but they were in the World Series just a few years ago. The bullpen is what is sinking their season this year. It’s been historically bad. 20 blown leads in the late innings by this group. If it was just half of that they’d still be right there in the thick of things.

  88. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They are doubling down on the black American market being theirs.

  89. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: I’m sure every Miami Dolphins season ticket holder is thrilled beyond words about Ross’s role in a tennis tournament!!!! However, those same ticket holders would be far more thrilled to read about Ross’s role in winning NFL playoff games. Unfortunately, that story WON’T EXIST until AFTER he sells the team.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Oh, and the Dolphins being here to stay was taken for granted BEFORE ROSS bought the team. NEVER any doubt in my mind about the Fins staying here. While it’s true that the number of season ticket holders has dropped substantially (especially those seats directly behind the Dolphins’ bench), fact is that Ross’s departure will be met with glee (and MORE ticket sales) the first year after he departs.

HOPE I’m ALIVE TO SEE IT!!!!!

I liked it. It’s quiet. Predominantly beach houses and duplexes vs the big hotels you have at a lot of other places I’ve gone. Still a lot of rebuilding going on there from a hurricane last fall. My son and I spent several hours looking for these missile towers from the 1940s that were part of the military developing surface to air missiles. Some are obvious, some have been incorporated into houses and are harder to spot. Never did find one of them. Pretty cool.

Larry Bird also lived here in Naples. In fact, his kids were in classes in elementary school with my sons. The son was on my son’s Y-league basketball team.

Being from Charleston, we more think of Parris Island, and then of course we had our own navy base, air force base, coast guard base, and I think we had some Army stationed there as well.

We also had bunkers on Sullivan’s Island that I think housed mortars or something. Now the library is there, and people live in some, all “underground.”

We also had cannons there that could shoot 10 miles.

Naples – Was Bird’s son any good in BB? By any good, I mean special

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He was not as good as my son. My son once got 42 points in a game.
Connor and Mariah I think were their names.
Bird’s two children that lived with him were adopted.
They’d be about 25 years old or so now.
He had a “cocktail waitress on the road” daughter
that never lived with him. Don’t know her name, much older though.
      Then when he got married,
his wife was apparently unable to have kids, so they adopted 2.

Larry used to come after school to my wife’s lab
for tutoring. She was a computer science teacher,
so she taught him how to use Excel and make Powerpoints
and such, just the basics, and then e-mail became necessary,
so she taught him to do the internet stuff.

He was alwys very nice to my wife, not so arrogant as he was to me,
but then I think is when he became FO with the Pacers,
so he only visited Naples, not really lived here.

Don’t know if he still has property in Gulf Shore Estates.
      (or whatever it was)
