Training camp notes – Dolphins lose a great historical team player – Nick Buoniconti

Today HOF Miami Dolphins LB Nick Buoniconti passed away. He was the leader of the “No Name Defense” that helped the Dolphins win two Super Bowls. He was a very charitable, impressive individual outside of sports. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Nick Buoniconti

So training camp is here and I’ve failed to feel any excitement other than the dact that it started. I don’t think it’s the team’s fault necessarily, i think it’s just the nature of practices, how short they are, and how much less physical they have to be to meet today’s safety standards. We also had one of our coaches fired this week, pretty odd at this juncture. You could look at this a few different ways. If you want the positive spin, it’s great that Flores recognized a deficiency early enough and immediately took action. Some guys may have waited around to see if there was any improvement which could easily have cost us some poor play early on. Also on a positive spin, putting the O-line in the hands of Dave DeGuglielmo is a good thing as he is a very experienced coach, coaching since 2004. If you want to look at the negative side, Flaherty wasn’t a great hire for the rookie Head Coach Flores. He was also previously the O-line coach in 2017 for the Dolphins and I needn’t remind you we were awful as per usghe at that time. In any case, let’s hope for the best in this regard.

I was hoping to see some player really show well, and so far it’s just been a whole lot of “eh”. We signed former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns, who played briefly last year for the Cowboys. I really liked Hurns when he was tearing up the league along with Allen Robinson at Jacksonville. If we get something close to that Allen Hurns we did very well. I was unrealistically hoping for a strong start from QB Josh Rosen. I didn’t really expect it this early but was hoping for a surprise. Instead we found out he never had to identify the MLB in any stop in his football career. Seems so odd to me, I thought it was a given. This doesn’t make him any less a QB, but just something he will need to learn, and Josh Rosen has been a player who studies the game, so bet on him getting this down, as well as the offense too.

Anyone think maybe Charles Harris would be tearing things up? Another thing I hoped for, but it’s very early yet, and he’s going to have a chance to make some hay as the preseason games begin 8/8, just a week and a half away! One guy who the coaches seem to be very high on early on is LB Jerome Baker. He’s going to be an impact player, taking off from where he left last year. He can do it all, run, tackle, cover and rush the passer and he will be asked to do all of those things. An early revelation has Minkah playing mostly slot corner, but I would think by the time the season starts, he will be doing a lot more as he did last season. As long as he’s doing things he’s great at, let it happen.

Things I look for to change in the next couple of weeks. I want Gug’s to try and find that starting 5 as quickly as he can and get them playing together as much as possible. I think the earlier we do that the better chance we have of having a cohesive unit out there. I also want to see guys take step forward, especially the aforementioned Charles Harris and Josh Rosen. Whether Rosen begins the season as the starter is not crucial to me, but to know he’s good enough to do so if needed is. I would really like it if he makes leaps and bounds in understanding the offense and making better throws under duress. If he doesn’t accomplish this, we may not see him this year as a starter unless of course something happens to Fitz or he just plays awful, neither of which I want to see.Training camp runs until Aug 6th, and then our forst game action as I mentioned will be August 8th at home against Atlanta.

GO DOLPHINS!

    • i have oft thought this of You, but since you can see so well, explain how ross actions will help us win a super bowl? i bet you cannot, but here is your chance, show us what u see about it

because its easy to for anyone to see the evidence Ross did not do anything to help us win a super bowl, his commitment lies elsewhere

D – Yeah, I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring. I’m not happy with the direction our current dictator administrator is taking our company. They have allowed about 8-10 good people quit in the last 3 months and don’t seem to trying hard to replace them. Instead, they are just dumping the workload on those still employed. I feel like that that’s how they’re going to try and operate, stretching everyone in 3 directions at once and not having a smaller payroll. I don’t play that shit. More and more are just going to jump ship and I want to make sure I’m not the last man standing.
    ——————————————
Dont blame you, it is a way to save money up front but generally causes a collapse in the long run. Most of the business that operate the best have at least adequate staffing if not being sligthly overstaffed. Better customer service, less stress on employees, etc. Dont blame ya one bit.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, just continue to work as you always have, dont let them pressure you into working your ass off, so they can save money.

This could also be a necessary cost cutting move to keep the company afloat. Some companies dont like to fire people, instead they just dont replace those that have left.

  9. D's avatar D says:

David, Ross can support whomever he wants or do you not believe in freedom to have your own opinion? Not only that, but Ross has done a lot of community service in Miami. He has supported rountable meeting with city officials and Stills to support Stills outreach program. He has publicly supported Stills right to protest, he had said he was very impressed witht he convictions and the passion in which Stills approcahes the subject. I think your review of him just because he supports Trump is very harsh and shows a lack of tolerance. I have not seen one thing that Ross has done that seems to indicate he isnt a genuinely good man.

  10. stanger, campaign fund raisers do NOT give the money to charity, where did You hear that from?

  11. Many or most of us have been wanting a championship for the last 50 years. i do remember us winning a championship, but it wasnt because joe robbie was tossing campaign fund raisers at his house for $250,000 a plate for a presidential campaign of a guy that called our players sons of bitches that should be fired.

it was because everyone came together for a common goal, win the championship, and they did, twice!
Joe Robbie was a NFL team owner, Mr Ross is a real estate developer that worships money at all costs, big difference

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was because the team was well coached and talented. Not because of Joe Robbie.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — you keep calling Ross greedy even though he is giving billions away…. a whole lot more than the Dolphins are worth. You don’t have to like him as an owner but man are you hitting on him for reasons that all the evidence out there says is not true. Call him an absentee owner…. then might be a point.

  12. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

David – Did you know that 50% of US high school students rank in the bottom 50th percentile for grades? Is that Trumps and Ross’s fault?

  13. my opinion is this will NOT help the team win a championship,

but obviously if someone knows so much more than Me that championships are here and plentiful, because of ross holding a campaign fund raiser, by all means let me know, i love championships too

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But you weren’t talking about him as an NFL owner….. you were generally calling him greedy, which even I didn’t get how fit in with the Trump fundraiser. He’s not making money off that.

      • yea ok, its all for charity right? my opinion is this guy will not help us win a championship with campaign fund raisers, its too divisive. but I want to see how this helps us win a championship from someone who thinks he knows so much about it

do You think trump campaigh fund raisers are for charity? thats a new one on Me

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Campaign fund raisers go to the campaign. The at least $4 billion Ross pledged to go to charity will go to charity. I’ve given you much explanation and even a link. Did you hit? Not sure what else I can do.

      • campaign funds go to the campaign, correct, and to the ones that hold the fundraisers
ross can do whatever he wants with his, like sign new players to replace the ones he ran off if it comes to that

im not sure if Stills or others will want to leave or not, time will tell

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think we all accepted what a campaign fundraiser did. And Ross has spent every penny on the roster he was allowed too. And then put $500 mil into the stadium as well. You been to a game in the shade yet?

  14. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

When Ross plays the board game Risk, he always tries to start with as much of Europe as he can.

When Ross peels a banana, he always starts at the stem end like the rest of you stupid humans. Bananas are meant to be peeled from the bottom you morons!! Try it, your mind will be blown!! What I would like to know, MIKE, is how does this help us win a championship? I’ll wait…

    Joe Robbies politics:

Following his graduation from law school, Robbie worked as a deputy state’s attorney and a professor of economics at Dakota Wesleyan University.[4] In 1948, at 33 years old, Robbie entered politics. He was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives as a Democrat.[1] In 1950, he ran for Governor of South Dakota but lost to Sigurd Anderson.[2] The following year, Robbie and his family moved to Minneapolis at the encouragement of then-mayor Hubert H. Humphrey.[1]

His political and business careers further developed in Minnesota. In addition to operating his own law firm, Robbie served as regional counsel for the Office of Price Stabilization in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.[5] He was also a charter member of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Commission and chairman of the Minnesota Municipal Commission.[6] In addition to working on Humphrey’s political campaigns, Robbie represented Minnesota’s 5th congressional district at the 1960 Democratic National Convention.[2][7]

Robbie also worked as a lobbyist for the tobacco industry from the 1960s until his death. In 1963, he appeared before the United States Senate to voice opposition to a bill which would have regulated tobacco advertising.[8] From 1971 until 1989, he was the head of the Minnesota Candy & Tobacco Distributors Association.

but one day a crypto expert challenged me to study the technicals on it. i felt a little embarrassed because i always research the stocks, but never seriously researched BTC

so i said what the hell and researched BTC, again, and again, over and over, and i actually started looking for ways to talk myself out of it, but couldnt

if you cant beat em, join em, i bought in heavy and dont regret it, im so far up in gains its tempting to sell

Was not happy Stills did that. Not that he thought it, but cause he put it out there. Like professionals.

    • but my argument is this is not what we want for a team unification, teamwork wins championships, and i do NOT feel this is the way to do it

you disagreed, and know more than me about it, so i thought since you know what i said is false, You could explain the viewpoint that this will help us win a championship
      this is a football question

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

First PS games are usually pretty vanilla and teams don’t show much. Mostly fundamental stuff, get into football shape etc.

    • True, but there is a lot of player competitions going on, everyone wants to be a starter but only 22 will be, and then the rest are fighting to make the team, nobody is happy when they get cut, so it’s an incentive for players to showcase their skills, or lack thereof, lol

I find the ps games interesting from that point of view, player evaluations

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes that’s why it’s usually basic straight up football and not a whole lot of scheming. See how guys handle their roles and how they hold up.

      • Right, no real game planning, just a bunch of player evaluations in a game type setting against someone besides your own teammates, lol

I bet players get tired of going against each other all the time,
and are salivating at the prospects of going after opponents instead of going against their friend, fishing buddy, wing man, etc

I’d rank on Gase for doing this….. but I’d probably do the same if the meeting was with Peyton Manning. 🙂
    ————————————
Every Tuesday when he was in Denver, Adam Gase met with Manning at 2 p.m. Except this Tuesday, when Jennifer was delivering Wyatt by caesarean section.

Gase told his wife to schedule the operation for 10 a.m. “So they pulled the baby out of me and said, ‘It’s a boy,’” Jennifer says. “They didn’t even put my organs back and sew me up before he’s like, ‘You good?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m good.’” He said, ‘All right then, I’m out.’ They said, ‘You want to cut the umbilical cord?’ He said, ‘No, I’m good.’” At 2 p.m., Manning was stunned to find Gase waiting for him in the meeting room.

DON’T KNOW WHY anyone’s surprised Ross is throwing a fund raiser for Trump. Way, way, back in the WFL days, Trump and Ross were co-owners of the New Jersey Generals, right, Mike E.?? –That’s the franchise that lured more than a few big names away from the NFL. They’ve been buds ever since. However, I would be surprised if Hershel Walker, the Generals stud running back, ever had a dinner in his honor thrown by Ross.
    WILL FINISH THIS LATER.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Yessir OD, correct.

    • Trump was a big part of the demise of the UsFL because he conned the owners into get rich schemes by directly going head to head with the NFL, told them the USFL teams would get included into the NFL
And inclusion to the NFL would make their franchise values skyrocket

That would never happen, the NFL never had any serious interest at adding the usfl teams to the NFL
So the league folded, they couldn’t compete head to head with the NFL, they should have never followed Trumps advice, and stuck with spring football where they were having reasonable success

On Stills, I have no problem with him speaking his mind, even to his boss. As a manager, my issue is his huge ignorance and lack of effort to educate himself. Much like his buddy Kaepernick, he spouts off on things he knows little about. For instance, Ross can spend his money how he chooses and his paid for initiative can still do what he wants it to. .

It was a stupid idea. Sports initiative for equality? The NFL is 65% black. The NBA 75% black. What inequality are we looking for here? Black men make up less than 6% of then population so 65% sounds a BIT high. Is he standing up for Asians looking to find a way in? Does he want women in the NFL? What exactly does this VERY un-silent partner bring to the relationship? Skill at kneeling? Whining that the guy who pays his paycheck isn’t doing what he wants? I don’t know what this initiative brings except to find a way to offload some taxable income into ‘your charity service’.

I’d prefer for Kenny to prove with actions not words…and please start doing that in the job you’re paid millions to produce in? Could you maybe hit that 1000 yard mark, buddy? Brother… in case you hadn’t gotten it through your ‘knuckle head’, I’ve been trying to stay AWAY from politics on this board! And yes, I use the word ‘knuckle head’ in jest back to you. 🙂

I think we’re good, Stanger, and thanks for breaking the ice. However, I’m certainly not over a certain admin who personally attacked, insulted, and lied about me… who blatantly crossed the boundaries of ANY terms of service/decency for ANY blog… past, present, or future… and we ALL know it. Many have reached out to express their dismay with how the admin was WAY out of pocket.

Should another incident with this admin happen again, I’m gone for good… and I’m absolutely positive that this admin would LOVE for that to happen. You’d better put this admin in check before this admin responds most unkindly again… that is, if you truly value our brotherhood/friendship and/or my presence here.

    Thank you, Stanger!

I called him out about it too as I thought he went too far.

M13, there’s been a lot of ugly stuff on these blogs since we all started and you still see some of it. Most of us have gotten caught up in some ugly arguments. We just need to clear the air at some point. You don’t have to be close with anyone. Post your opinions and move on if need be. As you know a lot of topics are tolerated here.

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – What Tim said is really the best way to handle this. Of course it’s your choice and I respect that, but by now you have to realize that you can’t like everyone and in return, can’t be liked by everyone either. For those don’t get along, why ruin your experience because of it, just don’t interact with that person? Again, not telling you what to do, just a suggestion pal.

I guess I feel betrayed. I REALLY liked this admin and for a very long time. I absolutely enjoyed sharing Star Wars, movies, and other shared enjoyment with this admin. When he got the crap beat out of him in NYC, I prayed for this admin, sincerely.

It’s just unbelievable to me that this admin flipped on me — HARDCORE — and over relatively small peanuts. Truth be told, it DID hurt my feelings.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is the first time since 2008 where I’ve ZERO expectations… meaning, it’s a rebuild/retool. Just let the best man win at his position (like we did in ’08), and take it from there. I’d still take the over on Vegas’ stakes, in terms of wins.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Same here, just not sure Fitz will be treated like the definitive starter because he’s new too. Meaning not sure if Fitz is one series and done. Unless they just feel he’s a seasoned vet. I’m only throwing a hunch out there.

And coming back and telling people to keep me in check…I mean you can’t appear weaker …then acting like that’s not a disrespectful thing to say…I don’t know what to say to you now

        It’s pathetic

You should have had the nerve to deal with me then
        Or maybe the next day
        Or something

Coming back and engaging other people about me
        That’s sad

You could have easily posted here and not said a thing about me
But you chose to in a disrespectful way
And now you are pretending you aren’t referring to me

That’s a pretty dishonest thing to do isn’t it?

All you had to do was come here and strike up a conversation with anyone and just not dealt with me

      You chose not to

      That’s was your choice

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YOU are the one who just played the victim with this post… and nobody is going to buy it. I NEVER did anything to you, and the peeps here KNOW IT.

      Don’t anyone else get involved

If M13 thinks he candle handle this
He shouldn’t need your help or anyone’s help

He should be able to handle it himself

  72. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    M13

You are allowed to do what you want…lol

But if you talk about some one without them being here
    And they see it
It’s not a reasonable response to expect them to be silent

You are the one that can’t handle the confrontation
So if you can’t handle it – don’t instigate it

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      See above

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I did see above
It doesn’t make sense in light of your initial posts

M13, I’m not the kind of person who lets things slide
      I confront it
      Thats who I am
I don’t ask other people for permission
I don’t care whether it popular

if you felt you had something to say to me tonight
You should have addressed it to me

If you felt you had something to say to me a month ago
You should have said that to me

It probably would have lead to another argument
But at least it’s not talking about some one as if they aren’t in the room or can’t read it…lol

Don’t tell Tim, or Mike, or anyone else
      Just me
That’s how grown men deal with things

Everything I’ve said about you I’ve said to you
They might not always be nice, but they are at least to you and don’t wrap anyone else into my fight or your fight

      I don’t think you’ve done the same
      Not tonight
      Not before tonight
Not to other people (albeit I admit that’s none of my business)

      I just don’t respect that

There’s not a whole lot of things people can say to me that offend me or bother me including invoking the memory of a hospitalization after I was mugged

But wow… not saying things to me
Or pretending you didn’t just do that

It just seems weak to me

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think I would like to see Fitz and Rosen alternate series with the starters.
Maybe not exactly one then the other, because sometimes a guy like Fitz can do something to set a d up for the kill on the next series or discover something that will work in a series that goes wrong for another reason. So if either of those occur, then give Fitz the first two series.

But Rosen needs some time with the first OL at least. It would be ok to take out the first WRs and RBs but we need to see Rosen when he is not handicapped, especially after what happened to him last year.

Rosen needs the reps not just so the coaches can eval, but just for practice.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Everyone knows who Fitz is for good or bad. They really need to find out Rosen and they need to find out everything, not just his particular skills when he’s not under pressure. Can he handle being #1. Can he handle the speed of the starters? Did he get PTSD from all hits last year? Who will be his safety blankets, who is he comfortable with, how fast can he go through his read, etc, etc, etc. It just isn’t the same with the 2s

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m glad he’s on our team this year

But every year it’s the same thing with Fitz
He’s good for a few games and then bad for some more
And I would expect the same no matter how familiar he is with the rest of the offense

But Rosen probably really needs the work
So I hope he’s get more reps and more time

  80. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WELCOME BACK MF-13 and WELCOME BACK TOP!! It’s great to have both of you here!
    ——————–
BACK TO FOOTBALL. Last season Rosen played behind one of the worst O-Lines in the NFL. This year he likely will be doing the same. But, perhaps, THIS YEAR might be different. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen and heard from the Flores regime. But, as all of you know, Flores, like his dismal predecessors, still has to SHOW ME!! And drafting only ONE highly ranked O-Lineman in this year’s draft wasn’t enough to make this problem go away. But it’s a start, and I’m thankful for that.
    ——————-
Drafting a REAL FULLBACK who can block is also part of the solution. And Flores’ demand that our tight ends get serious about their blocking assignments is MUSIC TO MY EARS. So, unlike those NFL pundits who are predicting 1,2 or 3 wins for the Fins this season, I actually believe Miami can and WILL do a bit better than that. NO winning season. NO end to the playoff victory drought. But it could be a step in the right direction.
    ——————
That said, the BIGGEST STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION would be a decision by Steve Ross to take his huge profits and SELL THE FRANCHISE. This upcoming Super Bowl will give him a prime opportunity to showcase his franchise. Perhaps some potential buyer will make Ross’s day with a bid he simply can’t ignore. Ross will soon be 80 years old. It’s time for him to increase his focus on his philanthropic interests, while he’s still able to do that. I, for one, would not be surprised if this season is the time he selects to do just that.
