Player Spotlight – WR Preston Williams

Most of us have seen the first preseason game against Atlanta. If you have, you saw quite the performance from rookie undrafted WR Preston Williams. I was watching NFLN this morning and they were doing this segment where Burleson, Schrager and Brandt each pick the most impressive preseason performance from week 1. I’m thinking there’s no way any of these guys pick someone from the Dolphins, especially since Schrager didn’t pick one. Burleson chose S Taylor Rapp of the Los Angeles Rams. Schrager, who seems to like the Dolphins chose Browns LB Mack Wilson and I was convinced no Miami Dolphins player could possible get an honor. To my surprise, Kyle Brandt chose Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams. He was gushing about his talent and how refined he looked. Williams finished with 4 catches for 97 yards and a crazy 24.3 YPR average. It was also the quality and difficulty of his catches , a one hand grab down the sidelines, a toe tapping marvel on the sidelines, going up over defensive backs, just a great looking day for a potential impact receiver. Could he be what Devante Parker was supposed to be? At 6’5 218 his size alone is impressive. At his pro day he ran 4.53 and with a 31.5″ vertical and 116″ broad jump. Nothing spectacular. Just turn on some practice footage or game tape if you want to see what he is.

There’s a long way to go before it’s a given that Preston Williams is actually on the 53 man roster when the season begins, but he’s turning heads every day, not just in the games but in practice as well. In yesterday’s scrimmage with the Buccaneers, Wilson made some pro moves and shook the Bucs DB like he didn’t belong on the same playing field with him. He’s working hard to make the roster and it looks like not only will he make the roster but he might actually be a difference maker. The last big investment we made in a WR was none other than former 1st RD pick in 2015 Devante Parker, 14th overall. Williams is taking the path of former Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess. The Dolphins signed Bess as an UDFA in 2008. Not only did Bess make the roster but he caught 54 passes for 554 yards and 1 TD. I’m not comparing Williams to Bess in any other way other than the fact that were both UDFA’s who can make an impact. Williams ceiling is much higher than Davone Bess’ simply because Williams has the size to and athletic ability to be a real difference maker, and he plays on the outside as opposed to being more of a slot/possession receiver that Bess was.

Preston Williams basically played one full season of college ball, playing last season at Colorado State. He transferred from Tennessee in his Junior year and didn’t play until his Senior year, last year. What a season William’s had though. 96 receptions for 1345 yards and 14 TD’s. That elite production. Williams was not invited to the NFL Combine because of an incident in which he was charged for misdemeanor charges of tampering and harassment for allegedly shoving a woman in a domestic dispute.. Much like the luck of having Laremy Tunsil fall into our hands, this could end up being another gift from the NFL Gods. Williams could have easily been a 2nd RD pick and there isn’t a shot in hell we would be selecting a WR in the 2nd or even the 3rd RD last year. Getting Williams to sign here was a great boon, but give the rest of the of the credit to Preston Williams who is working his butt off to be on this team. Besides, don’t the football Gods owe us for Yatil Green?

GO DOLPHINS!!

So I have not read above,
but I assume that you all have seen that, in the latest Power Rankings, we are dead last.

The entire paragraph about Miami is discussing Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Basically saying he should be dealt in a trade.
Almost as if it is insulting to him to have to play for us.

a few words are there about Rosen, although only insofar as his rendering Fitz superfluous.
Nothing at all is discussed about any of our team’s players, good or bad.
There is no reason given as to why we should be put last.

I just can’t see where a 7-9 team becomes a 2-14 team by losing a broken QB, two old DEs, an injured LG, a slow slot WR, and an ancient RB. Am I missing something?

Do they think Gase is that much better than Flores?

  6. naplesfan2010 says:

I know Rosen has been a little shaky out there, but at least he didn’t throw 5 straight INTs in practice and follow that with a 1/6 game worth zero yds with an INT for a 0.0 QB rating.
Teddy Garopolo or something like that.

  7. naplesfan2010 says:

Patrick Laird not only leads the Dolphins in rushing with 75 yards, his 5.8-yard average is tops in the entire NFL

Ooops! I copied the wrong link!

  9. mf13ss says:

So apparently, there is a little bit of ‘beef’ between Coach Flores and Kenny Stills… being Stills chimed up in support of Jay Z’s new role in the NFL.

    • mf13ss says:

Add this to Kenny Stills going public with his take on Steve Ross’ fundraiser for President Trump, and I’d say he’s in Coach Flores’ doghouse.

I’m expecting Stills to be traded at some point before the trade deadline. JMO.

    • mf13ss says:

      * being Stills chimed up ABOUT (not in support) Jay Z’s new role in the NFL.

    • stangerx says:

Think 8 straight songs sent a clear message. Did Stills really say cool? Cause Kaep sure thought different and actually praised Stills for still kneeling.

Alyssa Milano doesn’t strike me as a particularly happy person. Just saying . . .

Just bc her activism conflicts with your politics doesn’t mean she’s unhappy

      Come on man…

How exactly do you expect people to stand up for what they believe in

  12. Tim Knight says:

All this Stills and Jay-Z stuff isn’t really important in the big scheme of things. It’s media fueled drama that takes away from the team and game. Who cares!!!?

    • mf13ss says:

Well apparently, Coach Flores cares… he sent a message to Kenneth Stills today.

      • Tim Knight says:

Coaches send messages all the time. Flo’s mantra is team first. So if it hurts Kenny’s feelings to f’n bad. But it’s the media that keeps going on and on about this stuff and it’s not that big of a deal. I didn’t see anything that made it a rift. It’s all speculation.

  13. stangerx says:

God Dell made a deal with Jay-Z to say the time for kneeling is over. We’ll see whether Stills follows along, but have a feeling gonna be real lonely on that one knee.

    • mf13ss says:

How do ya know that Goodell made a deal with Jay Z? I don’t doubt it, but I want a source to confirm as much… not just pure speculation.

      • mf13ss says:

And I’m talking about the end of kneeling, of course.

      • stangerx says:

He entered a promotional deal with the NFL and then said it was time to stop kneeling at the presser announcing it. But maybe that is just who he feels. Change before to “made a deal with Jay-Z WHO THEN SAID the time for kneeling is over.”

If it makes ya feel any better, I, too, am getting frustrated with the media BS. Nevertheless, there IS an ongoing rift between Coach Flores and Kenneth Stills.

And now that the ********* Jay Z has entered the fray, it’s only gotten worse. Jay Z should be in jail for the BS he’s pulled. He’s a former crack/cocaine dealer who has no talent as a rapper. He got into a mafia syndicate that put him on perpetual play via radio and video, along with his buddy Silly Shit (Puff Puffy Puffer Daddy P Diddy Fucker Muncher Mother Fucker Munch a turd bitch… or whatever he goes by today).

The media is in control, as always… and sadly!

  15. sb7mvp says:

The media will continue to post these stories as long as you gossip queens continue to eat it up and talk about it.

Link, please. NOT doubting you, but I need to see it to believe it.

I saw it on the news last night. You can search for it probably better than I can. It was from the NFL presser.

I sometimes feel like I’m living in an alternative universe when conversing in this chatroom. Not all the time, but sometimes. Today is one such example, minus Steve.

    • CavalierKong says:

It is an alternative world. In the real world Sony just screwed the Spiderman deal!

Spiderman FINALLY done right, and two global money gobblers can’t reach a f%^&$ing agreement to keep him going in the MCU. WTF??!!!!~ ARRRRGGH!!

      • mf13ss says:

        😆

I hear that! And I’ll raise ya one more should “The Rise of Skywalker” suck!!!

      • CavalierKong says:

I probably won’t even see it in the theaters. Disney has turned the Star Wars franchise into common fare.

    • Tim Knight says:

How about explaining what you mean instead of these cryptic general comments. You don’t always answer questions after you post things. You keep it a mystery.

I asked you “Ongoing rift from what? This was the first thing. The other thing was Ross and a fundraiser for Trump.” and you didn’t continue with the conversation.

      • mf13ss says:

You don’t understand that what you typed wasn’t incoherent?

The FIRST thing was Coach Flores wishing/requesting that Stills had gone to him — instead of the media — regarding Stills’ discontent of owner Steve Ross’ support of President Trump.

The SECOND thing is what we’re talking about today: Coach Flores’ message to Stills acting up again in front of the media, instead of coming to him.

I’m not trying to chastise you, but your post made zero sense. There IS an ongoing rift between Coach Flores and Kenneth Stills… and it’s about Stills running his mouth to the media before taking his grievances to the Coach first.

    • stangerx says:

M13 — what made today feel like you were in an alternative universe? No one is even disagreeing with you much…. just talking about stuff.

  18. stangerx says:

Rockphin, I thank Stanger for bringing this matter to my attention. Do NOT tell Stanger what to post or not to post.

And if you’re a true fan of Google, perhaps you don’t understand what’s been going on in this country. I’d appreciate it if you’d stay out of my convos until you come correct. Thank you.

      • stangerx says:

Rock — took all of like 20 seconds and he wanted to see it. No biggie.

  19. Rockphin says:

I feel bad for the players. I didn’t realize that Flores was such a dick. Didn’t the US ban this kind of psychological torture. Anyone who would make someone else listen to more than two Jay Z songs in a row should be imprisoned

  22. Tim Knight says:

M13, well at least you explained it. I still don’t see it as a rift but that’s just my opinion. What I said did make sense based on what I read, I didn’t know Flores ever said Stills should have gone to him about the Ross thing. I thought only Ross and Stills discussed that. Never saw anything about Flores getting involved.

You don’t have to get so defensive about this, it was a simple question I asked you. But you allow it to get dragged out instead of just saying what you knew the first time. That’s all I asking.

    • mf13ss says:

I’m most surprised(!) that you hadn’t heard Coach Flores’ response to the Stills-Ross debate. Perhaps it’s because I don’t post as often as I used to, but it’s TRUE.

I’m not trying to be defensive, and I apologize if I’m coming off that way: I thought everybody KNEW this already!

Well, at least I’m not coming off as offensive! LOL

      • Tim Knight says:

I didn’t read or see anything about Flores asking Stills to come to him first probably because I had no interest in that subject. I’m ready for football, not drama.

No you didn’t come off as offensive because I wasn’t offended. 😉

      • mf13ss says:

        We’re good! 🙂

  23. mf13ss says:

    Stanger,

Interesting, the segment between Jay Z and Goodell that you posted. Thank you for sharing, man.

And with Kenny Stills now chirping up about as much? I’ve gotta think he’s about to be traded for bringing attention to our Miami Dolphins for all the wrong reasons. JMO. Maybe I’m wrong, but we’ll see.

  24. mf13ss says:

  25. The Flying Pig says:

  26. Tim Knight says:

I’ll say this, not sure if Stills has much value in a trade because of his stance on these issues and he’s not an elite player, and I don’t think most teams want to take it on. If we released him outright because Flores doesn’t want this sort of thing on his team, we’d save $3.25M and eat $6.5M in dead cap this year but it would be much less next year at $1.75M. I wouldn’t be shocked if we traded him for whatever or outright released him if his distractions are not tolerated.

All that said, however the team handles it I’ll move on and still root the same way I’m doing now with or without Stills.

  27. New Age says:

Stills, Reid, Kaep,.. it’s all about them. 680 avg yard/year WR probably can’t get in the news any other way. Tom Brady said it best on the Patriot’s Way. Study your playbook.

    Naples,

I agree about talking heads not knowing anything. We were slated to be the worst team in the NFL last off-season too. Maybe they will get it right at some point but I doubt it. People seem to forget their frequent inaccuracies before the next year.

  28. Mike E. says:

Piggy – I’m just saying that she doesn’t look like a happy person to me. If you feel differently, that’s cool. I wasn’t making a deal of it.

    • Tim Knight says:

      That’s how the it works.

    • Tim Knight says:

Laird has impressed and he looks like the type of player the Pats find. Yes I’m going to say “white”, not a blue chip talent but does his job, plays hard, is tough and has enough skills to be productive rush/rec. He’s probably good on STs too. He’s a football player.

      • stangerx says:

Have said similar, but was too polite to mention the “white” part. But maybe Flores stereotypes. 🙂

      • Tim Knight says:

There aren’t a lot of “white” RBs in the league, just a fact. But the Pats find them and slot receivers. Not great players but productive in their roles. I could see Laird being a slot guy too. You can create ways to get him the ball for 5-6 yards and not have to pay $15M per year for that. LOL

  30. Tim Knight says:

Omar is trying to turn the Flores/Stills thing into a political and racial issue. I’m not going to post the tweets, just go to his feed. Omar is also an expert on politics and social issues too. The “trained eye” sees that in a way many can’t understand. If you disagree, you’re delusional. Sad and funny at the same time.

  31. pheloniusphish says:

“ no talent as a rapper.” Takes no talent to be a rapper. There I fixed it.

    Tim

Laird actually had a pretty good year in 2017 playing for Cal
He’s been an overachiever for some time

He was a walk in at Cal

I think he’s a good addition to the stable

  35. Tim Knight says:

Why? Who said it was cool or not cool?
“My point is…. Kenny Stills can handle the playing of 8 straight Jay-Z songs, which was clearly intended to troll him. It just so happened to be his coach who trolled him. But when Bill Parcells trolled players all day, all season it’s cool.”

    • The Flying Pig says:

It didn’t jump out to me as inflammatory

I read his thread and it seemed like he was saying coaches/players sometimes antagonize each other to try to get a response…and bill parcels did this a lot, like when he called terry glenn “she” publicly

      • Tim Knight says:

Yes! Who is saying it’s different other than Omar? It’s not about skin color, Flores is darker than Stills. I’m not a religious guy as you know… but Jesus Christ already……. I mean when does it stop?

  36. The Flying Pig says:

  37. wyoming85 says:

    • steveccnv says:

      Why wasn’t Drake paying attention?

      • steveccnv says:

I think we can all agree that Drake is at his best, when used as a change of pace, pass catching back. We should all hope Ballage is the starter. Deiter and Calhoun are good run blockers, so there should be some holes up the middle, where Ballage thrives.

Again play them to their strengths.

I’d carry 3 + Cox, with Laird being the 3rd guy and Haskins on the PS. I like Walton, but there’s no room for him.

  38. wyoming85 says:

  39. wyoming85 says:

    • steveccnv says:

I suppose that’s about the right number. Not so much for him straight up as a receiver, but for his return ability and potential.

If we could just block someone…if you believe the recent reports by Flores that our OL is coming together, we may have something.

    • stangerx says:

I’m cool with Grant for 4 years at $6 mil each. Like the guy. Doesn’t even need to expand much from what he’s been doing, but still may.
