Player Spotlight : CB Eric Rowe

We have X on one side, that much is a given. The way the Dolphins have chosen to finish the equation is X + R = CB Bliss. It’s actually a big risk. Rowe has been a part time player for the first 4 years of his career. He was drafted in the 2nd RD in 2015 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Rowe played in all 16 games for the Eagles in his rookie year, starting 5. New England was in need of a CB in 2016 and sent a conditional 4th RD pick in 2018, which at best could have turned into a 3rd RD pick if performance measures were met. Why did Philly give up on their guy so quickly, so much so that they had to wait 2 years to get compensation back for him? Very odd.

At the NFL combine, Rowe was a monster. He ran 4.45 at 6’1 205, a 3.97 20 YD shuttle which is super quick for a guy that size, a 6.70 cone drill which shows elite agility and a 39″ vertical which shows elite explosion.. Maybe that’s why Philly took him in the 2nd RD, he Mike Mamula’d them. They pretty much gave up on the guy after one season.

Rowe started only 12 games in 3 seasons for the Patriots and played in 21 games. I’m not saying Eric Rowe can’t be the guy, but so far 2 teams, and make that 2 very solid organizations like the Eagles and Patriots can’t find a way to get this guy to work, it’s a little disconcerting. He has played well in practice and looked good in the preseason so far, but it just shows how poor our quality depth is at CB at the moment after Xavien Howard. Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis, Chris Lammons, Cordrea Tankersley and David Rivers. Chris Lammons has flashed some but is anyone here confident that he can handle the pressure of being picked on constantly as teams avoid throwing to the side X is on? That’s a lot to handle.

Some guys develop late, some guys just need the right opportunity to shine. It looks like Rowe is going to be given every opportunity and more to seize the job opposite X so it won’t be for a lack of chances that he doesn’t succeed here. Eric Rowe was a starter at CB in college at Utah. Who was that big Utah CB we had here that everyone loved? Was it Sun Sentinel, er Sean Smith? Smith was a lightning rod. Some hated him, some defended him. My recollection is I was a Sean Smith sympathizer. I thought he was unfairly treated by the haters although he was never a great player for us. He was at the very least a serviceable player for us. Smith started 56 games in 4 seasons for us. Can Rowe give us anything like that? The SS haters will hate this statement, but if Rowe can be as good as Sean Smith, I think we’ve done well.

I think TJ didn’t really fit what they wanted to do. We all thought he would fit the multiples thing because we see him as a hybrid LB/S but it must be that he hasn’t really shown he could be that guy, or that they would rather have a hawk in the secondary than a mountain ram. They seem to prioritize pass defending skills, and truthfully i would tend to agree. I dont want the guy at the back half of my defense being the guy im prioritizing to make the tackles. Id hope my LB’s would be the primary ones in that group, preferably DT’s and DE’s but there are reasons their tackle number are generally low.
    ————

Interesting take, D. I thought TJ was a good fit, but still expected him to be cut because he can’t seem to to stay healthy. Your take on it makes a lot of sense though, and might be spot on.

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Flores today said McDonald has a good skillset, “But there’s a lot that goes into putting a team together. … With T.J., it just wasn’t the right fit.”

  3. if only everyone was as smart as Steve is, lmao

ok Steve, go ahead and show us how smart and informed You are , or arent, ,

provide the link showing Miami was over the salary cap, and cutting Mcdonald brought us under the cap, Ill wait, because i cant find it

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think the cap was a big deal with McDonald, Flores saying not the right fit was the reason said it all. We’re eating a lot of dead cap this year but that’s part of phase one of the rebuild. We’re setting up for 2020 to be a major personnel addition offseason in both FA and the draft.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah — it was a total rebuild move. If we were thinking playoffs this year maybe we keep him, but they knew he’d be gone next year anyhow. So decided to see what they got with people who might still be here.

I never said that, I said we were in cap hell to start the league year.

You can’t just worry about the cap when you’re close to it, you have to always be planning, everything is about the cap.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe you don’t know the league year starts in March.

We don’t save money long term by cutting TJ, this year we save about $900K, but next year we’ll have 1.9 in dead money, so the net cap loss is $1M.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m watching thr last game against JAX and I really like what I’m seeing out of Rosen. I think it would be disappointing for them to start Fitz over Rosen. That throw he made on the play action rollout where the LB was on him, he made a fantastic throw going backward and delivered the ball perfectly about 20 yards downfield. Fitz can’t make that play. He also showed some nice escapability in the pocket.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we start Fitz the first 3 games and he fizzles out, then we can put Rosen in with no pressure and just continue with the rebuild season, but if we start Rosen week one and things don’t go so well, and Fitz replaces him, it’s going to be harder to get him back in there.

        Agreed

But I don’t really think it matters if he doesn’t start week 1

I liked as well, but it was also his best game and playing against their less than first team. Do like both his arm and his gamesmanship.

    • thanks Phel, obviously the Dolphins havent been over the cap, and did not need to cut Mcdonald to get under the cap

we have to carry dead money on him anyway, dead money counts against the cap,

but counting dead money against the cap is not more cash outlay

the Alonso example is a good one, , if we cut Alonso, we save only 26,000 against the cap, but save 4 million in cash

26000 is a drop in the bucket of cap space savings, but 4 million in cash is huge

i expect Alonso to be released, and it WONT be about the 26K savings of cap space

how cheap can we get? we are already 32 in a league of 32 teams of lowest cash payroll

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not about being cheap, it’s about moving forward with players who fit the long term vision and moving on from those who don’t. The team is in a rebuilding transition phase. The team doesn’t care where they rank in payroll. It’s not about that.

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m gonna try to make this real simple.

Since Ross pays every penny of the cap and carries over — there is no difference btwn cap and real money other than in what year it is paid.

    • D's avatar D says:

dead money is basically rolling debt forward and counts against a budget with no return on invest to be made. I get that its important not to let that number get out of control, but you are going to have a certain amount of it every year and a lot of times the dead money doesn’t outweigh the savings also made on the cut.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Dead money is just real cash you’ve already paid hitting the cap books. And yeah you don’t like it…. cause normally means a player didn’t work out.

    ————————————————–
I dont think the TJ move has anything to do with that. It was a roster spot thing. They didn’t like what he brought to the team, they would have to make cuts eventually to get down, and id bet with some of their upcoming plans he asked to be cut sooner than later.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think some people are just having a hard time with the team’s plan this year. It’s a new direction that was explained once Grier became top dog. He said he has a vision on how to build a team the right way for long term success and that’s why Ross promoted him.

  24. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Stanger: I just found it weird that in 3 days the Texans have replaced Former Fin RB with a Former Fin RB, and now Chiefs have done same with QB…

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Toba — Dolphins are real good at drafting folks who will stick in the league for a good long while, even if not with us. The scouts must look for journeyman traits instead of pro bowl ones. 🙂

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

hopefully that changes and we can keep more guys long term, or become the Pats south , and replace with young cheap versions before they cost a bundle.. possibly has already started…

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The replace/trade “jersey players” while still looking good is one place always pointed to the evil genius being real cold. Same time makes sense. Flores said some thing like “learned always team first” from him.

  25. that argument carries some weight of course, if he doesnt fit in with the team, bye

but there is NOT a need to cut veterans for the salary cap, that is just an excuse that works with
teams that are in cap trouble

this team has a 63.3 million dollar cash payroll, lowest in the NFL, and the cap is over 188 million

if the team cuts more veterans and says we cant afford them,,,, im not buying that

    • correction, 63,3 million is for the offense only
total cash payroll is 166 million, dead last in payroll

about 100 million less than the Falcons

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — why shouldn’t Grier and Flores do exactly what they want? Again there is no save money about this so long as Ross keeps spending every dollar he can.

      • they can do whatever they want, its their team

but i wont be making up stories about there isnt any room under the cap for a player, obviously there is alot of room

Ross views the Dolphins like a real estate investment, he maintains his investment by upgrading the stadium and updating the locker rooms, etc

but when he sells the franchise, the upgrades will benefit him and he makes more profit

payroll is just an expense that doesnt directly translate to franchise worth much

so if championships are NOT important, but maximizing the gains of the sale of the franchise IS, then we see where the priorities lie

what sucks for us, is the cheapest team is not going to be the best team,

but now we understand why fitzpatrick and rosen were brought in, they are very inexpensive options,

they were not brought in as best available options, just the cheapest ones possible.
Ross doesnt care about wins, he cares about money only

They saved 1.4 mil cutting him, so truthfully that a net positive regardless of vet status, dead cap etc. Still, 1.4 is a tiny droplet in the grand scheme of things and they could have cut him prior to June 1st, and took a less than 500k hit to do it. If they had been certain they wanted to cut him as a vet, they would have moved on before, but they gave it a chance and they just werent going in the same direction so they cut him now which pushes some of the dead cap into next year. I promise you this kind of move isnt about just wanting to cut vets, its about what they are doing with the team and TJ wasnt in that mold.

Overthecap has us right now about 20mil under the cap. Rolling that over to next year will put us at about 75mil under, with no re-signs, but we probably spend at least some of that to re-sign some of our own. We are gearing up for a spending year next year, so we did save more this year than spending every dime, and you can roll over money, you just have to declare how much you intend to roll over, so if they have basically banked 20, we are actually at our cap right now. I dont know how much they ear marked to roll over so not sure if we have spent every penny or not. Still the TJ move has nothing, at all to do with that. Also, to that point, Ross doesnt pocket any of the cap money if it isnt used, it is banked, not pocketed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t bank the money now for next year and say you’re at your cap, you still may need money during the year to make transactions, you do it at the end of the year, and you can only designate a certain amount.

Seems like the atmosphere these days is so much more casual, and I know for a fact the dress of the employees is casual, but I don’t want to be under dressed for the interview. I say shirt and tie, wife says jacket too. It’s been freaking 17+ years since my last interview. Thoughts?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is just one opinion, but in interviews I have been a part of, I have never once thought an interviewee was overdressed. Many times I’ve thought one was under-dressed though.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That was a much better way to say what I just was trying to say

It’s much worse to be underdressed than overdressed

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They are more likely to judge you harshly for not swearing the jacket than they are for wearing the jacket

Wearing the jacket allows them to tell you it’s a more causal atmosphere
Not wearing the jacket, when it was expected, means they might think you are too casual

You can always take off the jacket
If they are interviewing multiple people and you are the guy that didn’t wear the jacket – as opposed to the guy that wore the jacket, it’s probably a more problematic way to be perceived

We ate MORE in dead cap $$$ ($4.6M) than we saved in cap space ($1.4M) by cutting TJ McDonald.

In other words, we didn’t cut him to create more cap space… and we’re just DANDY with cap space right now, looking ever better next year. TJ was an outright cut by the new sheriff in town, not a ‘cap casualty’.

May as well go in a different direction. I really want Flores to finally be the guy. We’ve been here so many times hoping for this guy to be “it”. The big difference I see is Flores leadership that stands out among everyone involved. A coach that coaches the entire team and has a strong vision of what he wants to do. It looks different or perhaps better than it did with Philbin and Gase.

I hate going through this I get sucked in every time thinking we’ll finally be good.
    Stupid drafts and shitty quarterbacks
    No leadership or vision
    Shitty Quarterback OMG
And that’s why I sing the blues

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The last coach that came in that did good using the tough guy approach was Sparano, he seemed to have us going in the right direction, but all he was, was tough nosed, he really didnt have much more. Flores is use deception on D and it seems to be working, but we’ve never really seen a coach that’s moved guys around like this in positions that fit their skillset.

We’ve been asking for it, but what do we know🤔

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When your team is supposed to suck and you can’t win a preseason game it’s usually a bad sign, at least we passed that test.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nothing worse that having a bad team and your opponent just runs the ball down your throat, we haven’t seen that like years past.

What these signs show me is we aren’t going to be as bad as they say, so 6 wins minimum and 8-8 with steady QB play, and who knows with good OL play.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I really just hope they give us a chance, meaning don’t trade away a few guys like Fitz, that reeks of tanking.

next offseason will be very interesting, a slew of draft picks and a lot of cap space.

  76. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we will have 62 mill in cap space in march, and that number may go up pending cuts.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They were saying 100M in cap space back in OTAs. Who knows. It only shows $1.9M in dead money for TJ and a lot of guys that won’t make the roster.

I can see guys like Kiko, Reshad and Fitz being cut next year, that would save $29M.

Generally when you have too much cap space it means you have too many unsigned, so not much talent.

  77. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as for Ross being cheap….there’s a salary cap floor as well, he has to spend 89% of the cap over a 4 year period. i doubt Ross cares that much about the 11% difference at the sacrifice of winning.

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve carried over every penny in cap space for many years now. Ross being cheap is an founded stance to take, and he really doesn’t say I’m not paying so and so that, his hands are off the contract negotiations, he mostly is just notified on big contract signings. Sure he has to give his approval, but he just listens too his advisors.

Was it cheap when he gave Suh $100M+?

  79. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Golf Tip.

your right elbow plays a significant role in hitting a golf ball, it can give you forward shaft lean and great lag, helps you compress the ball for effortless power, the key is getting that right elbow in front of your right hip on the way down. not as easy as it sounds.

the way to do it is to have your arms fixed at address, trying to touch both elbows together and maintain that position till impact. the only moving parts would be your torso, shoulders and your wrists.

if your right elbow is in the proper place before impact your hands will be behind it and your clubhead behind your hands giving you great lag and forward shaft lean.

this is a very awkward position until you get the feel of it, once you do it correctly watch out!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the term used to describe the opposite of that is called a chicken wing.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As long as I keep the chicken wing down I do alright, but I’m going to have to try that.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

next time before you tee off put the club in your right hand only making little mini alignment swings digging that right elbow in. you’ll get the feel of that right elbow leading the way, then add your left hand.
not only will you get power but you will hit it right down the middle.

Is that adjusted after the Luck retiring? We have the colts on our schedule, that should have given us at least better odd in that game, and therefore an overall better standing.

Im kinda encouraged by the fact that a lot of the young guys arent part of the first few cuts, both for the fact that its the decent thing to do to offload the vets before the youngins to give them a better chance of finding another home and by the fact that we are seeing a youth movement, players that can grow up in the right system without the taint of another system on them.

  99. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

spence is a shocker, they had him rotating with wilkins.

    • D's avatar D says:

The reason i had Spence on my cut list was that we had Godchaux, Taylor, Wilkins and then it was down to these guys all of which could play both in the 3-4 DE role and 4-3 DT role: Dwayne Hendrix, Jonathan Ledbetter, and Adolphus Washington. Then you had some that are hybrid 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB’s like Tank, Harris, and Orchard. Finally you had a guy who can spell Wilkins and play 1 tech along with 3 Tech, Joey Mbu.

I think there will be roughly 9 kept out of that group. I had Godchaux, Taylor, Wilkins, Orchard, Harris, and Tank as locks (barring they pick a guy up that pushes one of them down). I though that Hendrix, Ledbetter, and Mbu all proved themselves and in the case of Mbu, we really need him to backup Wilkins. So thats 9, the last spot i did consider Spence a potential for that last spot but due to age, and lack of versatility, i though Hendrix or Washington was more likely to get that last spot, or possibly we would bring in a guy from other peoples cuts to take that last spot. I went with Hendrix because he has really shown up in the PS.
