Dolphins make some surprise cuts – Look to potentially add DE Jadeveon Clowney in a trade with Texans

As you all probably know already, the Dolphins made some cuts yesterday, not reporting this, just recapping what’s happened. One of the bigger surprises was cutting DT Akeem Spence who we picked up last year from Detroit for a conditional 2019 7th RD pick. Also somewhat a surprise was cutting safety T.J. McDonald. Not surprising was parting ways with OL Will Holden (Not to be confused with actor William Holden). We also waived OT Jordan Mills who when we first picked him up after Buffalo released him I thought he may be our starting RT this season. The way he performed for us in practice and in the preseason made it clear that wasn’t going to happen. Also waived were LB Chase Allen, and veteran TE Clive Walford.

Now to the big news. The Dolphins met with Jadeveon Clowney yesterday, although Clowney did not deem the Miami Dolphins originally as a potential suitor. He preferred the Seattle Seahawks, but after meeting with Dolphins HC Brian Flores, his opinion may have changed. At the moment, it actually seems as if the Dolphins are the team most likely to land Clowney, but at what price? Keep in mind, the price is two-fold. We have to trade talent to the Texans in exchange for Clowney, and then we have to pay Clowney. He signed a 1 year deal worth just under $16M, but what happens after this season? Therein lies the rub . . .

I had to drive from one office to another yesterday and I had the pleasure of catching some good dialogue between NFL Radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. Pat Kirwan is not the foremost authority on everything NFL, but as a former HC and NFL GM, he’s well respected in NFL circles. Kirwan was very much against the Dolphins acquiring Clowney and made some excellent points. He was saying that Clowney hasn’t been a premier player while playing with J.J. Watt. This reminds me of tha situation the Dolphins had years ago. Flash back to the year 2002 when the Dolphins had Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye. That year, Taylor had 18.5 sacks, Ogunleye chipped in with 9.5 sacks. This is a similar situation, it really is. Clowney having the benefit of possibly the most disruptive defensive player in the game hasn’t ever achieved double digits in sacks. BTW, Ogunleye only achieved double digit sacks once with CHI, and only once (10) in 2005. Granted, Watt hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but I’m loathe to give Clowney a huge contract when he’s never been a game changer. He’s young, he’s only 26, but where’s the beef? Understood he was injured his 1st season in 2014, and maybe had a hangover from that injury in 2015. Where’s the explosive stats after that? 24.5 sacks in 3 seasons. Sure, it’s better than what we have, but is it worthy of trading top talent away and then backing up a Brinks truck and paying him handsomely after too? I wouldn’t do it. 2015 Watt had 17.5 sacks and FIFTY QB hits. Clowney?4.5 sacks, 8 QB hits.

To me this more about getting a name than production, and as Naples mentioned, all too similar to acquiring Ndamukong Suh. I know we need help at DE, I’d rather run with the young guys who have shown some promise than really overpay twice to get Clowney, one in trade compensation and two having to pay some exorbitant contract for him over the next few years. I don’t think he’s worth it. Nothing wrong with kicking the tires, but don’t please don’t make the purchase!

Every Miami “beat-off” writer reminding everyone that Cloweney doesn’t want to play for Miami!

Like we didn’t hear them the first 30 times they said it!
    SMH

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it wont be Clowneys decision unless he foregoes 35 mil and sits for 2 years which is very unlikely.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It’s his decision

Why trade for a player who doesn’t want to be here
By making it public, if the Dolphins didn’t do something to change his mind, they would be fools

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think Clowney would be a nice addition regardless of his wants, he’ll have to play at a high level on a contract year but i don’t think he’s the meat and potatoes behind this deal, it would be the draft compensation that gets this done.

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

going by preseason playing time i would think barring suspension walton is the third rb on this team

Mike..when are you going to do a new blog?

you should do a piece on how Fitz beat out Rosen and that he’s the man in 2019.

Maybe I’ll do an article on how the Mets will once again rise like the Phoenix and win the 2nd WC spot in the NL.

      Probably Wednesday

  4. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Both qb’s should be an improvement over who started last year .. I agree with Rosen watch and process game film with Fitz starting at least the one game they say he’s the smartest guy in the room , I also believe Rosen can take over in a heartbeat at any time.

Add in better coaching , more discipline.. I see more wins than last year with either one

Yes Rosen is more the future than Fitz … future will be here soon , so will playoffs 👍😊

  5. one thing is certain, if Fitz is the starter now, it wont be for long.
he isnt a good QB, and he has a good one behind him
i would be surprised if Fitz starts more than 3-4 games before fading into oblivion

Rosen handled it with class, but he also knows that someday this is his team if he plays his cards right

Rosen will not suffer from this, if anything it will push him harder

but the teams win loss record will suffer from the decision to start Fitz , same as it did when shula started woodley over Marino

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You can’t say Rosen is good at this point. We don’t really know what his ceiling or floor are yet. I’d sure like to find out sooner than later though . . .

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like Clowney as a player and I’m not mad bc he didn’t want Miami

But doesn’t it seem like he’s being kind of a dick to the Texans and making this harder for them?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

he’s probably pissed because they couldn’t come to a long term deal, instead they franchise him, certain perks come with the tag. the ability to not have to show up for work until game time. he’ll sign prior to the first game

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you guys remember the Fest game against the Jets, Fitz handed us that game on a silver platter at the end. He was good for us then! LOL

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

he has also destroyed us using his legs as a Jet and Titan ..🤔

Patience Grasshopper , we got this 😊😊 Rosen will play more than Fitz by seasons end and we will enjoy the playoffs and a Rose(y)n future

  8. Fitz and the bucs had the bears for the week 4 game of 2018

here is some shitty logic before the bears game,,,

In Week 4, it’s a tough Bears defense awaiting the Bucs, so it might be smart to go with Fitzpatrick in that game. He’ll be in mid-season form at that point (as if he isn’t already) unlike Winston who won’t have played an NFL game since the preseason.

LMAO, and how did the starting FItz work out?
he was horrible and turned the ball over, Bears won 48 to 10

    48 – 10 ? thats smart to go with Fitzpatrick? i disagree

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He had 8 TDS and 1 in the first 2 games and was an early mvp favorite
      He faded
That’s consistently what happens with him

So why not play him early in the season if you are the Dolphins?

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – No, that’s just one aspect of it. I have no desire to watch 37YO Ryan Fitzpatrick play. None whatsoever. Wanting to see what Rosen is is not solely about drafting a QB next year, it’s about getting something for your investment too. It’s possible if Rosen is really bad we may have to think of drafting a QB too. Fitzpatrick is a rental here, he doesn’t fit into this teams plans for the future. Rosen may or may not. I’d like to know one way or the other.

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I kind of predicted when we traded for Rosen, Fitz would be named starter early in the season

    I heard objecting oinks…lol

Fitz is probably the starter for 2-4 games

If we win one of the first two, he’s probably get 4 games

If we win 3 of the first 4, he’ll get more

He’s always been a solid QBs for a short stretch

  11. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Did anyone bother to look at Rosens stats with the cards? or his win/loss record? does that not fit your agenda?

    • we know everything, including the fact that Fitz has about a dozen years of experience edge on Rosen and still cant keep a starting job

im sure in 12 years Rosen will have done much more than turnover the ball to the bears and jump between 6 teams with nobody really wanting him

One thing you can say is if Fitzpatrick plays 4 games, you do sort of have a measuring stick to compare whatever Rosen does. The Cards were awful in every way, he was in a no win situation there. Comparing his performance to a veteran QB with the same cast of players is a better measure than if he just played from the start of the season.

Could spin this a bit …. 😊 we actually have more resources invested at this second in Fitz $$$, than we have spent on Rosen.. future returns we expect should be much more from Rosen though

FYI .. it also looked to me that Rosen played better in his PS time than Fitz did but cest la vie…

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Or narrow-minded, just to fit what he thinks is best.

  17. Orob, not fighting with You today buddy but think on this for a second

Rosen was the number 10 pick last year, and Miami used a number 2 pick to trade for him
he has value to the NFL because of his potential, not because he had a tough rookie season with a shitty team. its because Rosen has enormous potential that has not been reached yet

if You feel Fitzpatrick is better than ROsen, Do you also feel that we could trade Fitz for better than a second round pick?

i feel the answer is laughably NO, no one in their rignt mind and sober would want Fitzpatrick so much they offer up a number one pick
if and when Fitzpatrick leaves Miami, he just gets cut, he has zero trade value

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Does the name Tim Couch mean anything to you guys pining for Rosen?

  20. D's avatar D says:

We couldn’t get much for Fitz even to a desperate team, though I still would have looked to trade him to the Colts for whatever I could get north of 5th round

  21. D's avatar D says:

Mikey to me it’s not about watching him play, it’s about giving Rosen the best chance to succeed. I don’t think Fitz starting has anything to do with him being our QB as much as it is give Rosen a chance to win over his teammates and get ready to be our guy

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I don’t see how that changes from now to game 5, but you’re not the only one that sees it that way. I think you show the kid you have confidence in him now, that could be huge, but it might not. Just my opinion

    _———————
I was saying same thing. When we picked up Fitz I knew he would start day 1 and when they traded for Rosen I knew it would be for the whole year. I don’t think we particularly like this upcoming QB class. I’m not entralled with them either. I don’t see many that will be much better than Rosen if any better

  24. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Think of fitz, as this years Gore(sorry Rob) or Arian Foster.. vet that is here to keep seat warm and coach the youngun how to succeed and be professional , until he gets it, or vet is injured ..

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Every snap Fitzpuke takes is less development opportunity for Rosen

      • D's avatar D says:

No true. Every game prep and watching from the sideline as the coaches and Fitz work through game plan and reads etc is better prep for him when he dies go in.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Some developing can still happen by watching, and dissecting together .. first 4 games are tough , Ravens D is always very physical and hard for us .. throw Fitz to the Ravens, discuss the goods and bads , see how it goes and quite possibly Rosen either comes into Ravens game if Fitz ineffective or maybe starts game 2 … better than throwing Rosen in and getting him PTSD like Beck …

  25. no one is really denying that eventually this will be Rosens team

i guess the Rosen supporters will have to be patient, but i do see Fitz as a sort of breaking in for Rosen

it seems FLores has it in his mind he wants to bring in the kid when Fitz either sucks up the place, or gets injured

  26. D's avatar D says:

You guys I thought would know me by now, I don’t post what I want to happen I post what could or seems likely to. Tunsil would be on my no trade list period but you have to understand as a business that has to prepare for future as well as looking at the current, if you get a team willing to sell out on the now you take it so you can prep for now and the future. Maybe they were thinking if they give us the sun and moon we get enough to draft the top guy next year AND make an offer to get Trent Williams, now and future, so it’s not outside the realm of logic.

  27. D's avatar D says:

Also I kinda like the idea he doesn’t have to go in and get eaten alive by a spotty OL if that’s how they are playing the first few ganes

  28. D's avatar D says:

I know you guys want to play with your new shiny toy but come on Christmas is just around the corner

  29. even though i disagree with Flores starting Fitz, i am not ready to say he is completely screwing up

he has to be thinking long term for himself and the team, he has to think beyond the first four games for sure

we dont know exactly what he is thinking, but its possible he sees the first four games for what they are, playoff teams.

he may think by starting Rosen, the challenge is so high that its possible Rosen could struggle and lose some of his confidence, or develop bad habits

bad habits are tough to break, and playoff teams are tough to beat for either of our QB;s

realizing that Fitzpatrick isnt likely to beat these 4 teams, both Fitzpatrick and Rosen are very intelligent, and it seems to reason that even riding the pine QB learn things

then there is the age factor, Fitz cannot scramble as fast as he used too, and he was never known for his speed anyway

its likely Fitz is going to take some hits, and plenty of them, and Rosen is one helluva insurance policy, and not a soul on earth would blame Flores for starting Rosen if Fitz is injured

some or all of these factors have likely run through FLores head, and in his mind this is the way to go, even though ROsen out played FItz in preseason

I’m in the ‘let Fitz play a few games’ camp. We have no idea how the oline is going to be and will at least take a few games to gel, if anything. Why throw Rosen into that, when he is still also undoubtedly learning the offense? A recipe for disaster IMO. Let Fitz, who has veteran savviness and good scrambling skills (even at his age) to take the brunt of that. In the meanwhile, Rosen sits, watches, and learns. If and when the oline and offense settle down, and Fitzmagic turns tragic, then hand they keys over.

Clowney finally traded, Fitz starting, cuts in progress. One week till opening day!

Clowney went for even cheaper than I figured. It would have been nice to add him, but definitely glad we didn’t get him if he didn’t want to be here.

I wanted to see Rosen start, but at this point, we have to trust the HC has his reasons. I don’t know whether it’s old school thinking of sit the young QB for the first part of the season, let him carry a clipboard and marinate, or whether Fitz really did just flat out win the job. Like Steve alluded to, maybe he doesn’t want to Tim Couch him. Whatever the reasoning, like many have said, we’ll see Rosen this year, and certainly before the mid-way point, unless Fitz suddenly becomes a different QB.

If we stash Rudock on the practice squad and another team wants to poach him, do we have first opportunity to bring him onto our 53?

    McTyer cut.
I thought he was too leaky.

    D,
I don’t think Grant is close to as good as Stills. He has the talent and potential to be Stills, but Stills has far more savvy and experience, Grant isn’t nearly as polished.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s a damn shame, but he looked old out there this year.
i hope we can keep Myarick after how well he showed against th’ aints.

  69. D's avatar D says:

I just don’t see stills long term with this team since he is at odds with the owner. Better to get what we can now. Berrios is a better fit. Our OC is running a very similar system to NE and that means slippery slot receivers

  70. D's avatar D says:

    Rahming cut

    also cut deluca and rahming

  72. D's avatar D says:

Really biggest shocker to me is Armstrong. Big ST for us. They may have a DB they are eyeballing for cuts

  73. D's avatar D says:

Bengals cut Malik Jefferson. He was a good LB in college don’t know if he just hasn’t picked it up in the NFL or what

  74. D's avatar D says:

    Nic Needham cut

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Indy cut OT J’Marcus Webb, but he’s a little old for us, but we really need a reliable backup to Tunsil. Not sure Webb is still quick enough to play LT.

    Really painful cuts now.
Hurns vs Ford vs Preston Williams
    Vince Taylor vs. Adolphus Washington
    Laird vs Walton vs Gaskin
    Myarick vs Smythe vs O’Leary
I think Adams is still on the team at OL vs Prince and Sterup

@ LB Hanks vs Smith is a sad choice to have to make

Total cost for him this year is only about $2 mil. Flores does that and he really takes his rebuilding serious.

Prince should make it with the cut of Jones-Smith if we keep 4 OT’s

  91. Brian Flores has already made it abundantly clear that opinions of his team that aren’t in the Dolphins’ building don’t matter. But the more time that passes before the Dolphins declare a starting quarterback, the more people are starting to weigh in on the topic. The results are consensus — the Dolphins ought to start quarterback Josh Rosen. The opinion has been held by many since the time Rosen first walked onto the team facility, but having seen Rosen advance in his efforts to master the playbook over the last month has further reinforced the assertion.

And now former players are starting to weigh in — all in favor of Rosen. NFL Total Access’ panel weighed in on who should start for Miami and each analyst echoed the same sentiment: start Rosen.
