2019 Season Game 1 – Miami Dolphins vs Baltimore Ravens

The 2019 season for the Miami Dolphins is about to start for real this coming Sunday at 1PM. Both teams have had some radical makeovers, neither team is particularly recognizable from the teams that played last season. Both long time starting QB’s are playing for other AFC teams, Ryan Tannehill for Tennessee and Joe Flacco for Denver. Also gone from the Ravens are Terrell Suggs, C.J. Mosely, Eric Weddle and Michael Crabtree. Gone from the Dolphins are Laremy Tunsil, Cam Wake, Kiko Alonso and Kenny Stills.

The Dolphins have officially made the change to a 3-4 base defense. After jettisoning most recently DE Tank Carradine, newly acquired DT John Jenkins will line up at LDE, Davon Godchaux at NT and rookie Christian Wilkins at RDE. Sam Eguavoen at LOLB, Raekwon McMillan at LILB and Jerome Baker at RILB with and Charles Harris at ROLB. Xavien Howard and Eric Rowe are the starting CB’s with the safeties being Reshad Jones and Bobby McCain. That different enough for ya?!?!

On offense, recently traded for LT Julie’n Davenport makes his first start as a Miami Dolphin. Next to him at LG is rookie Michael Deiter. Veteran Daniel Kilgore starts at C with rookie Shaq Calhoun starting at RG. Jesse Davis will be the starter at RT. WR’s DeVante Parker and Jakeem Grant will be on the outside with Albert Wilson in the slot. Mike Gesicki will be the starting TE. Kenyan Drake will be the starting RB along with Kalen Ballage as the backup but I expect both backs to get to a similar workload. Mark Walton, Patrick Laird and Myles Gaskin will also get a sprinkle of touches, but more than likely we’ll only put 4 backs on the game day roster and that will include FB Chandler Cox.

It will be interesting to see how this young OL fares against the Ravens D. I’m not expecting a lot, it could be ugly at times.I’m not especially interested in watching QB Ryan Fitzpatric play, although hopefully Fitzmagic shows up on Sunday. Can DeVante Parker have a strong start? Probably not as I expect a strong dose of the run game. I don’t know if either Drake or Ballage will find much room but I expect close to 30 carries or more for us.

On defense I’m curious to see how all the parts work in the 3-4 base. Odd that Jenkins isn’t at the nose and Godchaux at DE. Hopefully we can generate some pass rush with some well disguised blitzes and keep the Ravens guessing as to where the rush is coming from. Harbaugh is an excellent coach and the Ravens a very disciplined team. We’ve seen the Ravens shred us for years, maybe the guys on the field for us will do better as most of them weren’t a part of that.

In summation, I just want us to look prepared, and I want us to be aggressive on defense. I expect a conservative game plan on offense to keep us in this game. Coach Flo won’t be caught sitting at the end of the bench by himself drawing up plays on his tablet during the game. I expect a low scoring affair, not too unlike what we saw last night from Chicago and Green Bay.

Never said he would win Cav, just that might not be as clear as the articles made it out to be and that lawyers would get involved if he got cut. His agent is Drew Rosenhaus and Brown was one of the hottest FA’s there was. To me means contract was negotiated fully by both sides. But no have not read it.
    ——————–

Our little back and forth started when you said it looks like the Raiders equivalent of Aponte found out maybe they couldn’t void the guaranteed money. I said nothing suggests that. And it still doesn’t since he asked for his release when he found out he was on a week to week, and then they released him, lol.

Just because he files a grievance doesn’t mean there is any merit. And I never disputed that Brown might file a grievance. I simply refuted the idea that their capologist suddenly discovered they couldn’t void the guaranteed money.

    • CavalierKong says:

And I did end with the statement that I bet the contract is ironclad, which I fully believe. It was written for exactly this scenario, so if there is a loophole, they need to fire whoever wrote it up, lol.

      • Ken says:

No such thing as an ironclad contract especially in this type of situation

      • CavalierKong says:

Ugh, you really are a lawyer 😉 j/bb

It’s my way of saying his grievance doesn’t have a chance. I’ll make you the same offer I made Stanger if ya wanna put something on it.

    • stangerx says:

Cav — and have enjoyed that back and forth my friend. I’d take your side on put that money up as well. Just strange. And that includes he was begging for the to cut him and then apparently brought the grievance.

    Happy birthday, Doggie!

  12. Ken says:

    Cav:
I am not betting on who is going to win but only that contract law is usually very gray and hardly ever is something ironclad.

    • CavalierKong says:

While that may generally be true, and I bow to your expertise in the field, I think the NFL has their contract language and protections down pretty well. You don’t see players winning contract payout disputes very often. But in deference to your point, I’ll change my statement.

I bet the contract is ironclad upheld in favor of the Raiders.

  13. mf13ss says:

  20. Tim Knight says:

Good for Jesse Davis and his new deal. He’s not a great player but he’s been versatile and reliable.

    • Ken says:

I am sorry it pisses me off that they are willing to throw money at a mediocre player and a trade away a stud

      • Tim Knight says:

Two totally different situations, one has nothing to do with the other. Tunsil will be looking for a deal that pays him Davis’ entire contract per year. The offer Houston gave us was too good to pass on. Tunsil has never been all pro or made a pro bowl yet we received two 1’s and a 2nd for him. Yes Stills was involved in the trade but that offer was mostly for Tunsil.

      • Ken says:

I don’t think they are the unrelated. We destroyed our line. We have tons of cap room to pay Tunsil and then some. I don’t think the trade was the windfall everyone thinks it was. We are likely looking at a late first and second rounder this year and next. We gave up Stills and we gave up later round pics. Imo not a great trade

  21. Ken says:

    Captain Stubbs welcome aboard!

  22. Capt. Stubbs says:

    thanks everybody….
About this time tomorrow we’ll have an out come

  23. Capt. Stubbs says:

    —————–
No problem, CavKong! It was a really good game and well fought by Army to take the #7 ranked team in the land to double-overtime.

  28. mf13ss says:

    Happy B-Day, Capt. Stubbs!!!

  29. Ken says:

    Gotta run peace

  30. CavalierKong says:

Holy Birthdays Batman! I have two nieces b-days today and we have two on the board as well.

    Happy birthday Cap’n!

  31. Tim Knight says:

Ken, most pundits think Houston gave up too much. When a team starts over with a rebuild it can be painful. What OL exactly did we destroy, the one that’s been a problem for years? Sorry but we weren’t a good team with Tunsil or Stills just as we weren’t with Tannehill, James, Quinn, Wake, Kiko and McDonald. Time to move on and start over which is what we’re doing. It doesn’t matter what number those picks we got are they are still high draft picks and chips that give us options.

  32. Tim Knight says:

Why does anyone care where Antonio Brown goes, even the Pats? We’re not going to contend for anything this year. So as we’re rebuilding and getting better over the next few years the Pats dynasty will likely be over when we’ve got the team we’re ready to contend with.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

I’d like to see him freeze his feet right off, that would be cool

    • CavalierKong says:

I don’t want to see the Pets do well, because you know, it’s a rivalry. Why does this need to be explained? lol

      • Tim Knight says:

You think the Pats are going to struggle unless they get AB? 😉

      • CavalierKong says:

LOL, nah, I’m not crazy. 🙂

But AB would give them a dynamic weapon, another big time threat (assuming they get him to behave). We can’t just throw in the towel and say they’re going to win anyway, so who cares if they get one of the best WRs in the game for cheap.

Plus we hope to be better next year and the year after, and if I have the choice, I’d rather not face him on the Pets next year, etc.

  33. son of a son of a shula says:

Happy Birthday Stubbs have a great one.

  34. Tim Knight says:

David, you do realize we’re on the books for almost $51M in dead cap this year right? Would you prefer we spend just for the sake of spending and not get our cap in order for the future so we can add premium talent in the next couple of years?

    • Capt. Stubbs says:

We don’t need AB we actually need our wideouts to move in and help with our OL

      • Tim Knight says:

No I wasn’t saying for us to go after AB, I was talking about how David keeps mentioning that we have the lowest cap at $105 when it’s actually over $160M including our dead cap. We’re trying to clear cap space for the future so we can add premium players over the next couple of years.

      • Capt. Stubbs says:

I know you weren’t saying that. Some things never Change…..”David” lol

  35. Phindog says:

Thanks everyone for the Birthday wishes and Happy Birthday Capt Stubbs !! 🐕

  36. Capt. Stubbs says:

We may be better if we just always stay in goal line formation all season

  41. BailBondMike says:

Antonio Brown and the Patriots reached agreement on a 1-year deal worth up $15 million that includes a $9 million signing bonus, per source

  46. Tim Knight says:

    Good to see you Howie!

  47. CavalierKong says:

    Brown, Gordon, Edelman.

  48. Tim Knight says:

So are you guys suggesting that AB purposely tried to get cut by the Raiders because he knew he’d get signed by the Pats?

    • Capt. Stubbs says:

      kind of

    • CavalierKong says:

Steve’s been saying it. I mentioned it earlier this week. I admit to feeling a little tinfoil hatty saying it, lol, but yeah I think it’s a legitimate possibility. If he keeps acting whacko with the Pets then we’ll know that isn’t true, but like pig said, he’ll be the perfect teammate now.

    • Tim Knight says:

      I actually don’t think it’s farfetched.

    • twicethethe says:

Kind of seems that it was contrived to me. Time will tell. If he’s a model citizen, or just ‘normal AB crazy’ in New England, then I go full blown conspiracy theory on it.

      • stangerx says:

If he planned this why not just sign with the Pats to start with? Guess could have reached the point where the Raiders were out and he tried to burn it all down with the Pats in mind.

      • twicethethe says:

I thought he was traded to the Raiders? I suppose he could have not agreed and signed, but then he still would have been stuck with the Steelers.

      • stangerx says:

Might have been the great escape.

  49. Capt. Stubbs says:

Going for a golf cart ride with my daughter. I’ll be back to figure this conspiracy theory out….. it seems to have legs lol

  50. Tim Knight says:

The Pats tried to trade for AB last year so the interest was already there.

  51. TryPod says:

    Props to Steve

  52. D says:

    Jesus….

  53. Tim Knight says:

To make it even more bizarre for us is AB can’t play week 1 so his his first game will be against us in week 2. LOL

  54. twicethethe says:

I know it’s completely and absolutely far fetched, but what would be sweet was if Chucky now reported Brown for recording him with without consent, and Mayock reported him to the NFL front office for racist comments and physical threats. In other words the only way to throw a monkey wrench into this whole thing is to get the NFL personal conduct policy involved. Again I’m talking wild never going to happen scenarios. But it would be nice.

  55. twilley81howie says:

Yes, thanks again guys. Now I just have to figure out how to get my twilley picture back on here. This may take a long time 😬

  56. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, the Steelers traded AB to the Raiders. He had no control to sign with the team he preferred.

  57. son of a son of a shula says:

Stanger, yes AB is a patsie now

    • stangerx says:

Obvoiously have not been following, but at this point I say let the Pats have him. And contract is one year with incentives. This is more than a conspiracy theory.

  58. D says:

Soon as he seemed like he might be cut Steve was calling it and he convinced me. The positive thing is the Pats probably keep him 1 year and let him walk in FA. The will get a free 3rd for him in 2021, but he won’t be there when we start our ascent so I’m not worried too much. Good practice for our CBs

  59. mf13ss says:

Conspiracy theories… right? You should ALWAYS BELIEVE what the media tells ya… PERIOD, STOP, THE END. Antonio Brown has ALWAYS been an outstanding role model, so don’t question his motives.

    *sarcasm*

    • Tim Knight says:

What does this have to do with the media?

      • mf13ss says:

The MEDIA — by and large — has stuck up for AB. At one point earlier this morning, they referred to Mike Mayock (not by name) as the “GM of the Raiders”.

Mayock used to WORK for the NFL Network!

AB is a piece of $#!t.

      • mf13ss says:

PLUS, it’s been UNDER-reported by the media that AB called Mike Mayock a “cracker”. You actually have to dig for that data.

      • Tim Knight says:

Okay but that has nothing to do with what has gone done in the last 24 hours with the Raiders releasing AB and the Pats signing him.

I saw the reports that AB called Mayock a cracker. That’s no secret. That’s another issue.

    • stangerx says:

M13 — when I wrote the phrase conspiracy theory farthest thing from my mind was you. You seemed to take that personal…. but if am wrong on that apologize to the tenth degree.

    ————–
Okay, but as it pertains to a so-called “conspiracy theory”, do you think this was the plan all along? I mean, for AB to eventually go to the Patsies*?

    • Tim Knight says:

Like I said earlier, I don’t think it’s farfetched. AB does whatever it takes to get released and the Pats tried to trade for him this offseason before the Raiders got the deal. So there was obviously mutual interest. The Steelers weren’t trading him to the Pats.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Patsie spies met with AB to devise this plan it’s perfectly obvious

    • mf13ss says:

Tim and Son, you’ll now be branded as a “conspiracy theorist”… even IF your right! Just sayin’!

    ———–
I thank you, Stanger… but I’m only talking about politics that have been spoken about in the past. And, I don’t really care to rehash such matters.

The very LAST thing I am is a conspiracy theorist, yet I’m labeled/branded that by some here on this board because I’m not indoctrinated: I’m a FREE THINKER. Fact? A very VAST majority of what I’ve said has come to fruition (I’ll go light, and say I’m batting .750 in the big leagues… but I have connections).

I’m not so “worked up”, to be sure. I just want my name to be cleared from the so-called “conspiracy theorist” realm.

It’s ALWAYS alright to disagree with me, but I don’t care for being labeled/dissed/harassed… ESPECIALLY when I’ve been right on any given subject. I’d rather talk football on this board, rather than get smeared for my political views, good friend! 🙂

    • stangerx says:

Alrighty then. If that response was not to me then no problem on my end. Was just making sure did not offend in some unintended way.

  64. mf13ss says:

I agree with many who have stated that there WILL be lawyers involved in this AB case. The Raiders just lost out on two draft picks for AB’s (lack of) services, and this isn’t the end of it for teams involved.

To our F-MU lawyers: don’t assume what ya don’t know. Until ya read the fine print in AB’s contract with the Raiders, ya don’t know what ya don’t know. There will be lawyers… on both sides.

    • mf13ss says:

The NFL Player’s Association will get involved, the NFL (obviously) will get involved, the teams impacted by this mess will get involved, personal lawyers will get involved, and much of this will be impacted by the last CBA ratified.

To be sure, this is above EVERYBODY’S pay-grade, here.

    LOL

We’ve missed you, buddy! I can’t get ya caught up in one evening… especially being there is a HUGE party next door, out here high in the country where I live and away from flooding (lost my home in ’11).

BIG pig roast, and I’m going to get mine, with fairly good folks. The women are beginning to file in… wish me luck, buddy! LOL

  69. Ken says:

    I hope X takes off AB’s head

  70. Capt. Stubbs says:

signing out all!!! Possibly may, return… Birthday festivities have started…… very cloudy over here lol

  71. Tim Knight says:

Just like I’ve done with all my sports teams when they go young and rebuild, it’s all about watching the young players hoping they progress which makes the team get better. Then continue to build on it. All this gloom and doom is silly. This had to happen. We can’t keep rolling with the old guard. This team has a chance to be pretty good next year if a few things pan out and we acquire some difference makers in the offseason. I expect there to be 15-20 new players next year.

    • Ken says:

This team is not likely to be good next year. It is going to take 2 season

      • Tim Knight says:

Disagree. We have some good young talent already. I don’t mean contend for a championship next year but compete for a playoff spot as opposed to being considered the worst team in the league. LOL

We have no idea what’s going to happen this season and who we’re going to land next year. It can turn around that fast. Remember 1-15 to 11-5. It happens with the right moves.

  72. twicethethe says:

BailBondMike – Agreed that with the Patriots involved, nothing would probably come of it (part of my ‘highly unlikely’ stance is because of that fact). I guess I can dream anyway.

Exactly. Just like pretending to be a GM or a Scout. Leave it to the professionals.

    • Tim Knight says:

Why are so many disgruntled or baffled about what we’re doing? We knew this when Gase and Tannenbaum were fired, Grier was promoted as top dog personnel guy, and Ross saying if we have to take a step back for a couple of years to be good for years to come, that’s what we’re going to do. Grier hires his coach on the same page in Flores and this is what “Blow It Up” looks like.

Clear cap space and acquire draft capital. 2020 will be fun for all the armchair GMs. 🙂

How about you stop dissing us wanna-be GMs/scouts, and stick to whatever it is that you know better… it sure as hell isn’t football, so why are you on a football blog?

    Lol….okay, I surrender. I was having fun.

Very good. And you’ve now demonstrated that you’re here to diss, not to really talk football.

  82. Tim Knight says:

    Wow!!!!

  83. Wow, I was thinking maybe the discussion would be Antonio brown tonight, lol

    Guess not!

  84. UCF 48. FAU 14, hellll yea! 🏈

  85. D says:

Burro looks really good. Some really impressive throws

  86. D says:

I’ll admit that’s the most unique argument tactic I have ever seen. I don’t know if it’s brilliant or just wrong lol

  87. D says:

Maybe a bad choice of words lol

  88. D says:

Damn this LSU Texas game is a shootout

  89. D says:

We can bring it back around to AB, anyone think AB has a vagina?

  90. D says:

I hate to hear ogeron talk

  91. The Flying Pig says:

    I just saw IT 2 in 4D

    It was pretty cool
Anyone ever see anything in 4D before – I swear I’m not making that up

  92. The Flying Pig says:

    It was cool

    The seats shake
There are odors (nothing 🐖💨 worthy)
    The lights flicker
The seat actually feels like it is kicking you some times
There is even spray mist (which you can shut off)

    It’s wild – it’s a pretty immersive experience
    Especially a horror movie

    And IT2 was pretty cool
Bill Hader is in it and he’s awesome

  93. The Flying Pig says:

I’m about to have a bourbon myself

  94. steveccnv says:

What if AB continues his BS and this is how the cheats dynasty ends 😛

  95. This must be Brady’s final year, they loaded him up with WR,s, and Brown is a one year deal

  96. BailBondMike says:

D, I had to finish watching before posting. What a shootout between 2 really good QB prospects. The way the game started, I was like Meh. Then Burrow caught fire and Ehlinger followed suit. The game ended up being amazing to watch. I mentioned earlier if Burrow keeps this up, he is going to have a lot of 1st round talk.

    • steveccnv says:

Its college, the DBs just play not to get beat deep. Those Texas DBs were no match for the LSU WRs. Pitch and catch, any college QB that’s a little accurate can have great success.

    • BailBondMike says:

No shit it’s college. They don’t go from high school to the NFL. You don’t evaluate them on just their accuracy anyway.
