Dolphins play best game of season – Fall to Bills 31-21

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick played his best game of the season for the Dolphins. It wasn’t enough however due partly to his own huge mistake, a terrible INT at a point of the game where the Dolphins had the ball for about 10 minutes on a long drive to start the 3rd QTR and Fitzpatrick threw a crucial interception at the BUF 12 yard line. The Dolphins had an opportunity at a minimum to go up 17-9 with a FG, but the Dolphins wanted the TD, much like the decision to try for the 2 PT conversion last week. Good idea, poor execution.

It’s clear that Mark Walton has now emerged as the lead back as Kenyan Drake is expected to be traded before the deadline. That would leave the Dolphins with Walton, Ballage, Gaskin, Laird and Cox. I wouldn’t expect a big return for Drake, probably a 5th or 6th at best. DeVante Parker had a nice game, one of his best contributions in some time, and it wasn’t even really that good. Parker finished with 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 TD. Gesicki is really heating up making tough catches almost routinely now. Gesicki added 4 catches for 41 yards, a couple of them in serious traffic with a high degree of difficulty. Also very encouraging is WR Preston Williams who continues to grow before our eyes. Is he not doing what we hoped DeVante Parker could be? Williams finished with 6 catches for 82 yards leading the team in both categories.

The Dolphins won the T.O.P. battle in this game but still ended up on the short side on the scoreboard. As per usghe, we need to score more TD’s. We have had a devil of a time getting into the end zone, which is odd considering we have a fairly strong runner in Walton, 2 WR with good size (P. Williams 6’5″ and D. Parker 6’3″) and a TE with a huge catch radius and great vertical capabilities in Mike Gesicki. Hopefully we will figure out a way to use all of them.

The Dolphins managed to get 2 sacks yesterday and to no one’s surprise, it was newcomers, LB Vince Biegel got his 2nd and Taco Charlton added his team leading 3rd sack. Once again, Charles Harris remains sackless and once again you can read that as you like. It’s amazing we don’t get torched with the guys we have been playing in our secondary. Ken Webster, Ryan Lewis, Jomal Wiltz. Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe started at S yesterday. I mean who are some of these guys?

It’s impossible not to respect for Brian Flores. He’s doing this with smoke and mirrors. I know we haven’t won yet but it’s hard to expect him to win with the roster we’re throwing out there week after week. The Bills are a legit contender in the AFC for at a minimum a WC berth, but their defense is one of the better units in the NFL and we handled them in this game. The score doesn’t show it but the T.O.P. does. If not for that ill timed INT late in the 3rd QTR we had a shot to win this game. I think that was the turning point right there. Last week we took the game to the very end although we played so poorly in that game. This week we played head to head with the Bills but came up short. We’re heading in the right direction, and have to take comfort in that. At 0-6, it’s all we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!

MRS. OD got home from her 5th spinal surgery late yesterday afternoon. I’ll be spending a lot of time today taking care of her. At times like this (and there has been way too many of “times like this) my background as an X-Ray Tech and a CT Scan Tech comes in pretty handy.
She reports her pain levels are lessened EXCEPT in the area where the surgeon did his procedure, known as a kyphoplasty, which basically secures the fracture site of fractured vertebrae, in this case L-2 and L-3.
We won’t know the true level of her pain reduction for awhile. This particular surgery takes time to heal. And my wife later will be sent for hydrotherapy sessions and other forms of treatment. But we both hope she’ll be able, in a few weeks, to cast aside her walker, and, perhaps, her fancy cane, too.
I’m so grateful to my current employer for letting me take off all the time we need to get past what has been an extremely difficult 3-4 months. Between my bout with cancer and her two lumbar surgeries, it has been a most challenging summer. We are getting to know a LOT MORE about local doctors’ offices, MRI’s, CT Scans, Pet scans, etc., etc. We are now on a first name basis with phlebotomists, nurses, PA’s and even hospital parking attendants. “Are you back here, again?” is a phrase we have learned to live with.
Without a doubt, the #1 benefit from all this is the fact that adversity has brought me and my lovely wife even closer together.

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW: BOTH the Nats and the Astros share the same spring training facility at “The Ball Park” in West Palm Beach. It’s a state-of-the-art facility that also serves as Florida Atlantic’s home field for the NCAA baseball playoffs. FAU’s on campus park was deemed “too small to host the regionals” by the NCAA standards, since it holds less than 2,000 seats (but it’s plenty good enough for regular season games.) “The Ball Park” of West Palm Beach holds about 7,000-8,000 as I recall.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Like Tim said last night, Nats are on a mission. Right now they go to 11.

But if any team can come back from down 0-2, it’s the Stros.

Nkemdiche could be a sleeper too.

    *****
    I forgot about him
But he fits that mold of players with an opportunity to make the best of this second chance on our bad team

I wonder if Taco, Biegel, and Nkemdiche can be a big part of our D in 2020 and beyond
    They are talented players

If they can continue to contribute we can focus on adding two OLBs in the draft over the next couple of years

It’s interesting that on our depth chart taco, Wilkins and Nkemdiche are listed as DEs If you add John Jenkins to that group it not a bad group

And if you add Biegel to Baker and McMillan inside
Maybe adding a pass rusher like Chase Young can make a big difference

We will see – I’m just happy to see players that initially missed their shots gets a second shot on a bad team

    I forgot…..1 luv.
    —————
Many years ago, I had a very good (if not semi-confrontational) conversation with our guy KRISHNA, as it pertained to me using the term “1-LUV”. He got me to understand that the origins of “1-LUV” (rather, “one love”) came from the likes of a more peaceful generation, and that I was — in fact — using it way out of context, to put it lightly.

Bob Marley wouldn’t have appreciated the way I hijacked the term (my words, not Krishna’s) to fit it to what I was talking about… and Krishna was obviously 100% correct in what he was telling me. See, “1-LUV” was getting reinvigorated (more like, butchered) as the term came back to the Bay Area music scene in the mid-90s… that’s the way I’d (incorrectly) learned the term.

So upon discovery (thanks to Krishna) and reflection (the way I had been abusing the term), I realized that it was particularly offensive to the generation from which it started… and that generation comprised most of our blog back in the late Sun-Sentinel to early F-ME days… to even today.

I’ve not used the term “1-LUV” since, thanks to an education that I most obviously understood and respected… still do, to this day. I’ve grown, I’ve learned, I’ve matured, and I actually listen to constructive criticism… it’s one of my strong suits.

Like Sam Darnold the other night, you’re seeing (and chasing) ghosts here, Phelon. You’re better than that… you and I both know it, ol’ boy…

    Hey, Mike E…

I really liked the conversation we were having yesterday, what with the questions you’d posed regarding WR vs “BPA”. So, I took more of a philosophical look at it and I put a little time into the post (I should’ve turned it into a formal write with some more time and research)… it’s something I like to do from time to time when someone makes me think.

Get back to me with your thoughts…

If it depends on need at a position then is it really drafting BPA? Only if they have 2 prospects rated the same and they have a higher need for the WR. It just seems to me that teams never win championships because they have the best WR.
      ——————–
Like I said, it depends on a great many things. The BPA (and at any given selection in any round, for that matter) isn’t a universally shared fact, but rather opinions based on individual teams’ scouting departments/GMs.

And then, some teams don’t believe in drafting WRs early, PERIOD. And chief among them? Bill Belicheat*. He values meat and potato players first and foremost. He’d rather have a blue-collar, system player at the premium $$$ positions than a flashy, me-first player at those $$$ positions. There are so many benefits to doing this (a healthy salary cap as one mere example), but I don’t want to get off track.

The term “BPA” gets thrown around a lot, and it means something different to every team/GM/HC. Team philosophy, a player’s interview/character, durability, and a litany of so many other things greatly factor into what a “BPA” means to somebody. IMO, you have pure BPA (I think this is what most try to infer when speaking on the matter, yet it’s different to every team and person who is trying to assign the label. It’s consensus, not fact), you have BPA to fill a team need, and you have BPA as a team fit [that is, a player’s skill-set matching a team’s identity (ex: man, this kid would be the PERFECT fit for the style of Offense the ______s run!)]. Quite frankly, I don’t like the term “BPA” being thrown around: it’s a variable (truth!).

So as it pertains to the WR position, you’ll have your Matt Millen’s (DOH!!!), your Kevin Colbert’s, your Bill Belicheat*’s, and your Jeff Ireland’s evaluating and then picking the WR talent… and of course, everybody in between. Then, you hope that your team and it’s culture (not to mention supporting roster) can not only nurture the talent of the player, but that the player is mature and coachable. Then… this and then… this and then… and so on and so forth. Too many exponents, variables, and unknowns in this quadratic equation to solve it. Millen really had the penchant for selecting some real beauties (that’s obvious sarcasm), and conversely, Colbert takes WRs early and turns them into NFL STUDS. That’s a GREAT football culture they have in Pittsburgh, love ’em or hate ’em.

In short, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, life is like a box of chocolates, and the Draft can be a crap shoot. The most dynamic and successful WRs we’ve ever seen are certainly worthy of early BPA consideration, as history would show us. Additionally, fantasy football players recognize the worth of a WR to their fantasy teams and draft them early.

The BASIC questions become: does your team’s Offense call for a WR1 or is it a spread-the-ball around Offense, does your team have the ability to cultivate the WR1, do you really know the man (not the player) who you’re identifying as your WR1, and of course, does your team have a QB who is good enough to make a drafted WR1 a real WR1?

And lastly, a point. Bill Belicheat*’s Patsies* have always been a Super Bowl contender since they won their first one. However, I’ve never… boy, I say NEVER seen a team as dangerous as the 2007 Patsies* after they acquired Randy Moss: they re-wrote many sections of the record book. They went from an A+ Offense to an A++ Offense overnight and damn near went undefeated (<– thank you, G-MEN!!!). A WR1 can do absolute wonders for an Offense, so long as said Offense can incorporate one.

YES… a WR1 certainly CAN be considered as a pure BPA early to a team or teams, it’s just contingent upon many things, some of which I touched on above and yesterday.

NO… “need” should not be incorporated when talking about pure BPA. And the term “BPA” is different to everybody, every team: it’s consensus, not a universal truth.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Teams that reach for ‘need’ and pass on what is considered a better prospect usually pay for it in the long run. A player that jumps out at me is Levi Brown. The Cardinals felt they had to have a RT for Matt Leinart but Brown just wasn’t that good and they took him at #5.

Obviously teams all have their own boards and value some prospects differently. That’s where the crap shoot comes into play. But when I say BPA I’m referring to a team following their board and not reaching for a ‘need’ position in a panic.

Same example as above, don’t take Levi Brown over Adrian Peterson.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Levi Brown is a VERY good example, Tim. Before I purchased my first “I Want to BE an NFL GM: the Story of Barcaloungers” (forward was written by Phelon), I wanted Levi Brown as our selection back in 2007. It’s TRUE! I wanted Levi Brown, and most of it had to do with my PSU pride, coupled with NEED. BAD IDEA, indeed.

Yessir, that was a CLASSIC example of drafting for NEEDS, and not pure BPA. I’ve seriously learned MUCH since 2007, (now joking–>) especially after reading the aforementioned book. 😉

Ah! Happy to amuse you via a mere cliché! It always works well with my nephew’s friends (they are under the age of 8).

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me the idea when drafting BPA over need is, who helps you become a better team, an Adrian Peterson (even if you don’t have a dire need for a RB) or an OT like Levi Brown? And I don’t mean to bash Levi Brown over an over. It’s just an example. 🙂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The answer is (even though Levi Brown went R1P5 to the Cards, if I recall correctly?), we could have drafted Patrick Willis over Ted Ginn Jr and his entire family.

Now… Willis did retire early, acknowledged. But had we drafted Willis instead of Ginn, perhaps Willis’ future would have been very different. I mean… different team, different coast, different culture, different coaches, different options, and different destiny.

And I use Willis as an example, due to the fact that both you and I would have taken Willis over Ginn since day 1 of the 2007 NFL Draft.

M – I guess I’m just looking at our team when I’m talking about WR. Sure we need one, but man, I’d put it pretty low on the priority list. We all know we can’t do anything on offense w/o a decent O-line at worst, and of course a QB to throw the ball as well. Our defense is so bereft of pass rushers, we need 2-3 quality defenders either at DE or LB that can rush the passer as well as a CB opposite X. That’s why to me, WR is way down the list. What Randy said also holds true for me, I hate that WR’s for some reason think their Gods gift to the NFL and are more important than everyone else. It’s an odd thing but it sure seems to repeat itself time and time again.

I felt we would play better team football, something we didnt before. I wasn’t sure how we would do since we are barebones as far as starting talent goes. I really dont think we look anywhere near the cluster we did last year. Hasnt equaled wins, but it looks more directed and cohesive. It also seems to be improving steadily.

As uninspiring as he has been so far i still think he shows more developed QB skills than Tanny. We dont have much to work with here, probably one of the most talent deficient OL’s we have had forever (even though they are playing up to their potential better).

Mike E, I wish you would have said as much to begin with, bud! 🙂

To my knowledge, our back-and-forth had nothing to do with OUR current WRs, our current leadership (HC/GM/FO), and especially regarding 2020 WR prospects. ANYHOW…

As ALWAYS, I’ll refer anybody to DBOLT as it pertains to WR prospects in any Draft: dude KNOWS his stuff regarding the WR position.

I’ll give ya a really quick take, as far as I’m concerned: I don’t believe we need to be drafting a WR early in the 2020 Draft. I mean, we’ll see what happens in the interim (trades and/or non-re-signs), but I think our WR corps — as currently constituted — isn’t too bad, bud!

This talk about WR’s, I would hate to see us use a pick on one before the 3rd round. If we go offense skill in the early rounds, I would rather draft a RB like Swift from UGA of Taylor from WIS.
I think this WR class is deep and one could be found later. A sleeper for me is senior WR Tyler Johnson of Minnesota, 6’2″ 205. Averages (career) 15.5 yards/catch and a TD per every 6 catches (26 total so far).

MF-13: DID YOU SEE my boy Pat Elflein in The Viking’s game on TV Thursday Night?? I touted him highly 3 years ago when Miami was in great need of an offensive lineman. One of his greatest assets was, and IS, a PROVEN ABILITY to play at an all-star level both at Guard and at Center in the Big 10. He started as a center his rookie year with Minnesota. Now he plays guard with an equally high level of proficiency in the NFL.

WE COULD have had this guy. But our current talent “GURU” decided he wasn’t worth a pick. Instead, we picked a piece of garbage with a late round selection who is currently out of football. Is anybody surprised??

Problem is the guy who helped do “the picking” then is STILL DOING THE PICKING NOW! I was hoping that the “Blow-Up” would include replacing the top levels of our personel department as soon as possible. But, no, Ross has shown no inclination to improve this gaping need in our football organization. Many of the same guys who were picking THE WRONG DRAFT PICKS are still with the team. AND THAT’s ON ROSS!!

ESPN’s College Gameday is covering the North Dakota State-South Dakota State football game today. One of the placards said “Bring On ‘BAMA!” But “BAMA” was crossed-out and replaced with “The Dolphins!” NO DOUBT some will find that funny. I DO NOT!!

Another WR I thought would be a sleeper but, after switching to slot this year, I am sure he is rapidly climbing draft boards as (I believe) he is the leading WR in college football right now. Texas WR Devin DuVernay, 5’11” 205. I have watched him several times. He is physical and has deceptive speed (run 10.27 to win the Class 6A championship in the 100 meters). Hands! Has never dropped a pass in a college game to date. “I don’t know the other way to say it,” Herman said, “but the anger that he runs with once he has the ball in his hands, and his physicality, it’s just so impressive for a slot receiver.” “he does a really good job of settling zones,” Brown said. “He understands when it’s man and runs away from man coverage.”

This is just his game against #2 LSU:

    OD

Elflein has missed games in both 2017and 2018. In 2018 he finished the season with a 43.5 PFF grade which is “below average” and that was 38th among centers in the nfl, meaning several backups were ranked better than him

He’s not living up to the stud status so far
Given the Vikings traded up to get him, that’s not so good

I give young players a lot of latitude but so far it hasn’t been there for Elflein

Take pff rankings with a grain of salt but they don’t love him

He did grade fairly well on Thursday
    https://twitter.com/pff/status/1187817864528646146?s=21
Reading some of the comments of the Vikings fans (which should also be taken with a grain of salt) they don’t like him much

The guy we took before him in the 2nd however has graded out very well
    https://twitter.com/pff/status/1188066751239593984?s=21

I stress though, take these pff rankings with a grain of salt

But whomever made the decision not to trade up for Elflein made a pretty undeniable GOOD Decision

What some of the Vikings fans said about him below

    https://twitter.com/mba_sf/status/1187937474514808833?s=21

    https://twitter.com/skoltothebowl/status/1187971362092212224?s=21

By the way, I liked Elflein coming out of college too
So – not finding fault, we all like guys that don’t pan out

But not drafting him is probably a blessing in hindsight

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am not actually high on some of these big name WR’s only cause a good number of them do have that elite talent but play on teams like Alabama and Clemson where they can rely on their talent against lesser CB’s in college and don’t refine their game (specifically route running) like they should. Then they get to the NFL and it takes a couple years against much better DB’s to get their game up to speed (see Parker). I would much rather draft a complete WR who runs precise routes, can all ready run the entire route tree, understands defensive looks and knows how to exploit a DB’s weakness.

PIGGY: I’m NOT always sold on PFF rankings. I’m guessing you’re not, either. MY OPINION is that Elflein would be either the 2nd or 3rd best O-Line player on Miami’s roster right now. But NO-O-O, our Doofus Brigade Personnel Department has chosen to select a mish-mash of mostly FAILED DRAFT PICKS for the entire length of Ross’s ownership. And our current O-Line is undoubtedly among the worst in the entire NFL. THAT is indisputable!!
    ————-
But Ross STILL refuses to overhaul our personnel department. THAT is a HUGE mistake!!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Elflien is not good OD

      It’s not just PFF
The Vikings fanbase talks about him like we spoke about Columbo
The Vikings spent their 1st round last year pick replacing him (Bradbury) last year bc he was so underwhelming in 2018
If he was 2nd or 3rd on our OL, that’s not good, and he probably wouldn’t be here in 2020

It’s tough to admit, but not drafting Elflein who would have required a 2nd rounder (that we spent on McMillan) or a trade up from the late 3rd, was a good decision by the front office, not a bad decision

And For what it’s worth, the Vikings with former chased out of town Dolphins GM, are a very competitive team now, despite missing on Elflein

I don’t think it’s wise to hang onto every pick like it’s make or break
Good teams sometimes make bad picks
Bad teams sometimes make good picks

I don’t think it’s fair at all to smear Grier for being part of a scouting dept, that actually made the right decision on passing on Elflein.

That reads more like anger directed at the organization than a fair assessment of Grier

      Give Greir a chance

  88. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

An interesting draft if we don’t have the first overall and miss on Tua would be:
    1a Chase young
    1b Herbert/Eason/Burrow
1c OL or another pass rusher rusher
    2a WR/RB/OL
    2b Same as above
    3 Same as above

    Chase Young might be special

I would be happy with the first 3 rounds if we walk away
With a QB, 1-2 OL, 1-2 pass rushers, WR, RB
We have 6 picks guys (at least)

I think a couple of skill players like WR & RB in those first 6 picks isn’t going to kill our ability to build the necessities like QB, OL and Pass rush

I don’t have a problem drafting DB or ILB, I’m just saying I think we need a little talent at the skills position as well

The real trick this offseason is how our free agency
It would be something else if we nab 2 OL starters in free agency and maybe a defensive player

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think my Fav WR right now (I posted about him last week) is Justin Jefferson of LSU. He is 6’3″ and a very good route runner. Lines up both outside and in slot, very versatile. Also a very good runner after the catch. Had big games against #9 Texas and #7 UF totaling 29 catches for 286 yards and 4 TD’s.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

  92. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

PIGGY: You say “Give Grier a chance.” According to Wkipedia, Grier’s been with Miami in some capacity for 20 YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!! HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT???
    ——————–
I respect that you believe the “ELF” is a lousy player. I disagree. But there should be NO DISAGREEMENT AT ALL that the personnel department has done an awful job stocking our defensive line during the last 10 seasons. You can defend Grier’s record until the cows come home. But it won’t change the fact that the Dolphins have stunk for most of the Ross decade AND they’ve not even come close to winning a playoff game during his ownership.
    ——————–
It’s one thing to experience mediocrity for 10 seasons. It’s quite another to defend mediocrity. And, right now, the Dolphins are worse than mediocre.
