A tale of two halves – Dolphins can’t finish, lose to Steelers 27-14. Dolphins are 0-7

Once again, the Dolphins managed to play some good football this week. The Dolphins actually dominated the 1st QTR leading 14-0, but as has been the case, good play for this team has been difficult to sustain. Talent and depth have something to do with it, but it also could be in part to a 1st year HC not having answers and unable to make adjustments. It’s likely a combination of both.

I’m sure some media people who cover our team will be hailing Minkah Fitzpatrick as taking revenge on his former team and playing unbelievable football in doing so. If you watched the game, the first INT was a true gift, a pass thrown by Fitz to TE Nick O’Leary that bounces off his pads into the waiting hands of Minkah Fitzpatrick. Couldn’t have been any easier unless it was thrown harder and and stuck in Minkah’s facemask. The next INT was just a desperation deep throw in which Minkah had deep coverage and ran underneath it for another easy INT, a pass thrown very poorly. Otherwise, Minkah was very quiet, didn’t do anything really and I hardly noticed him on the field to be honest.

Was James Connor imitating Ryan Fitzpatrick here?

I laughed pretty good when I saw Conner walking back to his sideline for assistance to remove this large chunk of turf that got stuck in his facemask after being tackled. I woke up my wife but she also laughed once she finally listened to me that it was a funny thing to see. I needed the levity, I want our team to win, and I enjoy when we’re winning. We play the Jets who have looked heinous lately. We need guys healthy to beat the Jets. X can’t play a half and then go out with an injury leaving a defensive backfield full of Nik Needham, Ken Webster, Ryan Lewis, Chris Lammons, etc. No offense to any of these fine young players but they wouldn’t be on the field other than ST’s for just about any other NFL team.

I want to beat the Jets and damn the record! I want to see Gase tormented by us, I think he’s a cocky dude who needs a little humiliation, and we can supply just that with a win next Sunday. I want to hear audio all week after the game of Adam Gase trying to explain how they lost to us and making excuses as usual. It never seems to be his fault. Sam Darnold did better last year in his rookie season w/o Adam Gase than he is doing this season with him. The great offensive guru that he is.

Did anyone last night not enjoy Allen Hurns pinball his way into the endzone last night? Was that not sumpin? I have a feeling we’ll be trying to shake up Sam Darnold next week. If you think you saw at least 3 too many blitzes against the Steelers, there may be more next week. What scares me is Gase loves the short game and the screens, and that’s what burns a blitz. When too many guys are on the wrong side of the LOS it’s easy for a short pass to turn into a long one. I hope Patrick Graham and Brian Flores keep that in mind next week!

GO DOLPHINS!

AJ Epenesa DE from Iowa anyone know about him and is he a legit mid first round pick?

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think he’s quite in young’s category but he is really well rounded
But he might be more of a 5 technique DE

  3. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Here’s an interesting prospect that we might be able to pick up in day 2 maybe day 3, if we add chase young early, than maybe another edge guy a little later will work

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

      Pig,
I like Chaisson as that guy who can come off the edge w/ closing speed. If I can’t get Gross-Matos I’d definitely try and get him. Like I said, I’d aim for 2 top shelf edge closers in this draft. Young and one of the other two I mentioned would be preferred.

Swing it out to Drake what a concept

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, why not… we have three 1st round picks. I’m not one who is all in on a QB in 2020. Build the front 7 of the defense and the OL is okay with me. 😉

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I’m leaning that way too. We have to start getting sacks and big plays on Defense we just watch teams do whatever the hell they want to. I’m warming to Hurts as a playmaker, modern day QB and roll with it.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think they definitely go QB in the first along with/ possibly 2 D players. I think they’ll finally use FA for OL to protect their young investment and allow the O to properly develop. I also could our first 2nd rounder being used on Tylan Wallace WR OK State.

  6. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think if you want an Espensa type DE you might be able to go w/ Joe Gaziano from Northwestern later in the draft and get a better value.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Thanks for checking in on this, I’m just starting to look at edge guys, we need a pass rush bad.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think the DE’s we might see Mia target are Young, Gross Matos, and Chaisson from LSU in round 1. I agree we need more closing burst in the rush. I think Taco becomes a legit threat in this D if he has a true primary rusher opposite of him. I also think you want multiple closing speed rushers to be able to rotate & would be fine if they grabbed 2 in the first.

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like the idea of two edge rushers
But I do think given Wilkins, taco and Jenkins are all playing 5 technique – maybe we would be better off drafting 2 OLBs

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Biegel and Van Ginkle are that plus Baker gives a good pass rush. It’s up front where we don’t get any production.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Van Ginkle hasn’t even seen the field
We really need a stronger edge rush
Chase Young be a huge upgrade
But that’s my focus – Outside

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Young can be the hybrid edge along with guys like Beigel, Van Winkle and even Foster from time to time. Charlton also has that DE/OLB ability. There is no pure 4-3/3-4 scheme as we know.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m calling it a 3-4 bc it seems like we do that more than anything and we gotta have a way to define who we bring in so we know what we need and what they do

So I’m viewing draft prospects like we are building a 3-4
But I know that oversimplifies it a bit

  8. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Alabama, Florida and Notre Dame all have pairs of OLB that might help us
Worth watching those 3 teams in the next few week

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    DBolt
I was about to mention chaisson
    Do you like him
He seems to have a lot of upside

  10. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Piggy you just want a jersey that says Young but in your case you can get his number but it should say “OLD” instead

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I know Van Ginkle hasn’t played yet but they drafted and kept him around for a reason. Nobody in the 2020 class has played a game yet either. We’re talking about next season right?

Wasn’t it a Halloween night when Cam Wake sacked Dalton for an overtime win?
    ——————————–
It sure as heck was. And since was overtime and everyone stayed was jam packed in the parking lot after. Reports are that some crazed guy kept jumping out of no where in front of head lights giving the safety sign. And yes they all honked. And yeah I was juiced. 🙂

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like Nick Coe bc I can spell his name
    He’s also a bull

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think Epenesea is a first round talent. He will probably end up being more of a run defender than a sack guy. He is versatile and has a little get there in him but not first round level. I’ve watched him play his whole college career, and I just don’t see high end talent. Great measurables but the production just isn’t there. He’s not a quick twitch guy.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      That’s an interesting take
He’s ranked pretty high on most websites
But he doesn’t see to be a blue chip pass rusher to me

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We need a pass rush. If he can’t get home forget it we have plenty of those don’t we Mr Harris?

  15. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Piggs they’re gonna wake Van Winkle up to come off IR and he’s going to think he’s still at Wisconsin

  16. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Pig,
Plain and simply I’d love to see any combo of Young, Gross-Matos, or Chaisson. They are the types of DE’s that can turn the D from almost getting there to drive stoppers. You saw the pitential of this D Monday night where someone was a step away from stopping a drive. These guys makeup that step and more.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Get two of those and Hurts, what a first round. Then a WR like you mentioned and then start on the Oline, we have plenty of picks.
Do need Corner and Safety though

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Not a huge Hurts fan, but I think he’s good for a team overall even as a BU QB. I feel confident innFlores developing CB’s so I think we don’t have to invest high picks on them. Definitely want them to take care of the OL innFA….then follow up in the draft w/ scheme fit developmental players that need a year to develop…..get me any of the Oregon kids😂. Would love to see them grab a Taylor, Dobbins, or Dillon at RB also.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I want the back too, oh so many ways to go.

I’m test marketing Hurts, he looked good in the comeback that failed last week. He played really well in the fourth quarter. He’s interesting.

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Itts driving me crazy but it doesn’t seem like a great year for edge

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think innrd 2 you have the following guysvthat could fit and help:

      Okwara, ND
      Robinson, Syracuse
      Lewis, Alabama
      Greenard, UF
Jennings, Alabama…..He reminds me a little of Trey Flowers.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah but up top, it’s a little weak
On the other hand, it would be bad to fill that need in the 2nd or 3rd round
        Especially if we draft Young

  18. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Piggs, when you mentioned olb instead of an end I didn’t mean to dismiss it entirely and there are other ways to go about but we do need sacks and fumbles. I prefer the bigger ends who can also play the run tough too like, when mentally heathy, an Everson Griffen type.

(14:54) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle pushed ob at SF 35 for 36 yards (J.Ward). (Up the middle but it doesn’t count)

    Touchdown Cardinals
(12:17) (Shotgun) K.Drake right end for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Was 2nd down and outside the tackles so it doesn’t count

    5 Yard Run
(5:30) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle to ARI 14 for 5 yards (D.Buckner). Hey this one actually counts

    5 Yard Run
(14:32) (No Huddle, Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle to ARI 36 for 5 yards (A.Armstead) This is second down so it doesn’t count

    8 Yard Run
    (8:53) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle to ARI 18 for 8 yards (R.Sherman; F.Warner).
    1st & 10 at ARI 10 counts!

    5 Yard Run
    (8:07) K.Drake up the middle to ARI 23 for 5 yards (J.Tartt).
    2nd & 2 at ARI 18 Second down so it doesn’t count

    8 Yard Run
(11:00) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle to SF 46 for 8 yards (F.Warner). Straight up the middle but it was second down so it doesn’t count.

    17 Yard Pass
(9:39) (Shotgun) K.Murray pass short right to K.Drake to SF 9 for 17 yards (J.Ward, R.Sherman) 1st & 15 gets a first down on a pass behind the line of scrimmage. But of course this is a pass so it doesn’t count

    8 Yard Run
(15:00) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle to ARI 44 for 8 yards (D.Greenlaw, F.Warner)Another 8 yards up the middle but again unfortunately on second down so it doesn’t count

    11 Yard Run
(13:50) K.Drake right tackle to SF 38 for 11 yards (D.Jones). 11 yards up the middle. It doesn’t count.

    11 Yard Run
(11:34) (Shotgun) K.Drake up the middle pushed ob at SF 15 for 11 yards (J.Tartt) Damn another 11 yard run up the middle and again it doesn’t count

    2 Yard Run
(5:28) (Shotgun) K.Drake right tackle to ARI 12 for 2 yards (D.Buckner; A.Armstead). This is outside the tackles and was for an 2 extra points So of course it doesn’t count

  34. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you win championships by having a strong btwn the tackles running game and playing great defense like the team that Drake was playing against.

Drake will do great in Arizona as they are a form of run and shoot, they spread the field and he’ll have open space to run.

that type of offense has never equated to team success.

BTW did Drakes team win last night? i’m not sure???

as Herm Edwards once said, “you play to win the game”
will someone send that to Flores please.

I know right? Tannehill is sitting at # 4 in the league in passer rating (of guys with over 50 passing attempts) had a higher per pass length average than he ever had here with 8.3 and is completing 73% of his passes.

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think it worth mentioning that Arizona offense is intended to run through David Johnson

So it’s not a huge surprise to see a RB put up big numbers for them

But I am frustrated we didn’t use Drake more like that as well. In Gase’s case I was really frustrated

But for Flores, I think they are a little more vanilla on offense and trying to establish a run game

  37. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i like Mark Walton, he’s a tough guy in a small frame, he makes great reads at the LOS. it would seem Flores and company are trying to establish an inside running game and a great defense. they just need better pieces.

i think we are on the right course it’s just tough to watch us lose, even more tough is losing on purpose and i suspect that’s exactly what we are doing.

i think we are not going to win any games this year, in the long run losing may be winning.

can’t wait for this season to conclude.

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So, any of y’all going to the Jets game this weekend? I was thinking of going. Tickets are cheep and I think we are going to win this one. Gase is so incompetent I just can’t believe that Flores will lose to him.

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think there’s a lot more going into the decision of sitting down X for the rest of the year and it has nothing to do with a knee injury.

X may have drawn the line with some of the schemes they are requiring him to play.

maybe a common middle ground for both is to give him the rest of the year off.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think it might be because we already used our two “to return” designations. Otherwise his injury would have to be severe enough to not be safe for him to come off of it for the rest of the year. They dont just let people stash on IR without some sort of proof their injury is that severe. Its possible they can get Dr’s to fudge it so they can, but im guessing he has at least an injury that looks like its an 8 week recovery.

Like I said, I like Dbolts guys (Young, Gross Matos, and Chaisson) for pass rush. Coe is a beast but not a quick twitch DE but I like him a lot. He can play DT and DE, outside on run downs and inside on pass downs. He has a good motor for a big guy.

Another DT/DE guy I liked last year but he returned for his senior season is Raekwon Davis of Alabama but have not heard much about him this season. I think it is because he is mostly playing DT this year (I think) after Q. Williams left as he has 0 sacks so far this year against a poor schedule. He is also bigger, now 312 lbs at 6’7″.

D, you got anything on Raekwon Davis ?

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, some of us have talked about WR’s. Some want one early. I think we should wait until middle of the draft.

What do you think of WR Tyler Johnson of Minnesota? He would be like having another Preston Williams at 6’2″ 205 lbs. I was thinking he might be an under radar guy and nabbed in the 3rd or 4th round but with the Gophers undefeated, he might get more attention. For his college career, he has 170 rec for 2613 yards at 15.4 average and 27 TD’s.

I don’t follow Minnesota football too closely. I’m still an Iowan! I’ve only seen him play a few times. But, I do know that the talking heads up here think Johnson is a good not great talent. He’s had to work with some pretty bad QBs over his college career and still managed to put up some decent numbers. Minnesota is about to get a big dose of reality. I think they might very well go 1-3 over their last 4 games. Their schedule has been extremely weak up to this point. It’s about to get tough. Penn St, Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin. All of them but Northwestern have top 10 defenses, I think.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As of right now, out of the 5 teams picking in the top 5, 3 of us will be looking at QB. Bengals, Broncos and us. If we are not #1 over all, I could see horsehead trying to trade in front of us.

Broncos have two wins. So not top 5, but they will probably want a QB and might move up. Gotta say not hating how the last play of the Skins game turned out right now.

LOL at Le’Veon Bell saying the Steelers were interested in trading for him. So rather than give him a big contract, they let him sit for a year, then let him walk. Now they are interested in trading a draft pick to get him back with the 3rd highest RB contract in the league?

Uh-huh, right. Enjoy the Jest, Bell. I guess you can say at least it isn’t the Dolphins. Of course we’ll see if you can still say that after this Sunday, lol.

And often you can find diamonds in the rough

But just the way the draft shapes up without predicting what it means for the players career, there’s a couple of really good prospects up top and then it fades quickly, with almost everyone after Espenesa getting a low 1st/2nd round grade

      Those grades don’t mean much
But if you are taking a edge guy at 15, it will probably be a “reach”

It’s just not a great pass rusher year if you have 3 firsts

It’s a strong year for WR, OT and QB

Anyone that’s the way it looks to me as of November

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well you’re way ahead of it than me. I was just saying you draft some guy who just fits in the scheme say in the 2nd-4th round and they pan out even though not a blue chipper. We have so many quality picks it would be almost impossible to not hit on quite a few of them.

It’s a shit season but for all the draftniks it’s going to be very exciting. 🙂

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Let’s say we take chase young

Than the 2nd round might be the sweet spot to land a 2nd rusher. I know they are usually 1st rounders, but some of the edge guys look like they have a lot of room to grow as of now

That said – there is still a lot that happens before the draft

So a guy that is expected to go on day 3 can shoot up to the 3rd edge guy taken

My guess is at least 1 pass rusher shoots up draft boards when we get close to the draft

But as of right now, I think it’s not such a strong draft for edge prospects…which doesn’t mean a thing in turn of how their careers pan out

you can forget about beating the Jets, the only way we win a game is if cincy, the jets, falcons and redskins all have 2 wins

  66. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Looking at the schedules for the Steelers and Texans
I think there is a shot the Steelers lose 7 of their next 9
And the Texans 6 of 9

    Yes it’s wishful thinking
But if it happens and they finish 5-11 and 7-9 that will be great!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see the Texans at 7-9 to 8-8, and the Steelers 7-9 or worse. That being said we should be getting 1st rd picks from them in the 10-17 range. So add that to our top pick wherever it is, top 5 at the least. You can add cornerstone players with that. Then the 2nd’s, 3rd thru 5th we’ll see, and multiple late picks. We might trade some to move around but still. Add that to FA and we have an entirely different team. We’ll have no clue who we are once again but it should be better and more fun. 😉

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would rather have 2 picks in the top 10 than the first overall pick
2 and 8 or something like that would be amazing

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well yeah but make the best of your picks. We are in a place where we add the BPA throughout. We’re not in a go for it mode. We’re in a make the overall roster better mode. We need to do what the Saints and 49ers did. Different tales but quick turn arounds in a couple of years with the right players.

the heats kendrick nunn is pretty damn good, good enough to replace dion waiters, also replaced goran dragic as the starting point guard.
    another surprise is chris silva,
meyers leonard is the starting center, he’s been lighting it up from 3 point land, what a great trade, dumping whiteside’s salary and getting leonard in the portland trade, leonard seems to be way better than whiteside.
now add in jimmy butler, watch out eastern conference.
heat @ 4-1 play the rockets sunday night

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They are a good young team
And they have lovable pieces is dragic, whiteside and waiters

There’s still talk about a Bradley Beal trade
I would be surprised if we didn’t see a big trade by the trade deadline

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So the Mets hire Carlos Beltran. I’m not for it or against it, I have no idea how that will work out. Time will tell. Hope it was the right choice. I loved him as a player, he was great.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Check that, I liked him as a player, never loved him. I sometimes felt his stats were better than what it seemed, but he was a great player.

Georgia V FLA is a good game to watch today for prospects
    GA for QB and OL
    FL for the LBs

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Keep an eye out for Memphis RB Kenneth Gainwell (redshirt freshman) today. He lives up to his last name. He will be on the radars of many next year for the 2021 draft if he declares. The kid is so versatile. He played QB in HS, career numbers included: 8,412 total yards (rush/pass/return) and accounted for 108 TD’s. This season through 8 games, he has 137 rush for 979 yards for 7.1 ave with 11 TD’s and 34 rec for 440 yards for 12.9 ave with 3 TD’s.

Really good receiver so Memphis lines him up out wide like we did Drake a little. Here is the game highlight against 5-1 Tulane but he is in most of it.

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we possibly look for a TE in the later rounds to replace Nick O’Leary, keep an eye out for Memphis TE Joey Magnifico. He is a good blocking TE and would be like having a faster Nick O’Leary with better hands. Though, we are supposed to have that in Smythe all ready.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I wouldnt be surprised if we look for a TE in the early part of day 3
You can find good ones there
      Kittle is a 5th rounder

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen Jacob Eason’s name come up before. He’s a big QB 6-6 230 range. Does he have a big arm and what’s his mobility like? I don’t mean as a runner so much but moving around the pocket, his ability to escape pressure.

    • D's avatar D says:

He pretty raw but he has elite QB skills. He was the QB at UGA before Fromm unseated him. Definitely one to watch. I mentioned him a few times he’s one of the top guys on my list.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To what degree though? It’s not like winning the Super Bowl will be the goal next year. Maybe 2021 for Lawrence is the goal. But along the way keep looking at young QBs as you build the core team.

      • D's avatar D says:

Eason is a project in the sense that any QB that has 1.something years of experience as a starter is a project. He probably is more likely to succeed though that most with that label. Haskins was a project in the same sense, several other first rounders have been too

  83. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have Rosen in year three plays a FA next year we can take a high ceiling project to complete with our existing disadvantaged high curling project

  84. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Eason is too long limb d to be a scrambler and is throwing motion is a little too big and windmilly for
My taste but he seems t see pretty well and moves around in the pocket ok

  85. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

^^^^^^yes that was me advocating keeping Rosen as QB1 in camp next year. Move along. 😬

Continue to build up front. Wilkins and Deiter was a start last year. Build on it. We’ll have the cap space and draft picks to do it.

    Go Phins!!!!

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Correct….if we don’t build the OL and DL it won’t matter who the QB is or DB. We will continue to fail or at best reach the heights of mediocrity. Yay 8-8. And, the rebuild will be for naught.
