Dolphins fight but eventually give in to visiting Bills, lose 37-20

Josh Allen had his way with the Miami defense, throwing for 3 TD’s and rushing for another. Allen threw for 256 yards hitting on 21 of 33 passes and rushed for 56 yards and a TD. Jakeem Grant did his best to keep the Dolphins in the game, busting off a 101 yard kickoff kick return to make it 23-14 before the half. Fitzpatrick threw the ball 45 times because the Dolphins simply couldn’t run the ball. Ballage continues to underwhelmed gaining just 9 yards on 9 carries although to be fair, he was met in the backfield on at least half of those carries the Bill’s defense just smothered our run game. This is the type of game where Fitzpatrick usually has either 4 TD’s or 4 INT’s, but surprisingly he finished with zero in both statistical categories. The O-line just didn’t show well, and our offense was hindered all day.

DeVante Parker had another good dayfinishing with 7 catches for 135 yards. With Preston William’s done for the season, both Parker and Allen Hurns will be the beneficiaries. In fact, the Dolphins signed WR Allen Hurns to a 2 year contract extension. TE Mike Gesicki was not a big part of the offense yesterday catching only 4 passes for 18 yards. Patrick Laird caught 6 passes for 51 yards and added 1 carry for 7 yards.

The defense was without LB Raekwon McMillan and also DE Taco Charlton. The defense looked out of sorts, although the kids in the defensive backfield continue to give strong effort. These guys like Nik Needham and Ken Crawley and Jomal Wiltz and Eric Rowe are all gamers, and even if they don’t start next year, they seem like high character guys that are good to have around.

The Bill’s are 7-3 and one of the better teams in the AFC. Devin Singletary is starting to get rolling and to have future hall of Famer Frank Gore to lean on doesn’t hurt either. They’re a better team than we are right now, but we played straight up with the them for a while in both games, with more talent infused next season, we should close the gap. There’s hope, you still see good things each week, and despite being undermanned, this team has fight in it.

GO DOLPHINS!!

LOL — my better half cleaned my key board a couple weeks ago. Was all proud of it after pointing out how dirty it was. A week after she asks “why do you have that knife on your desk?” My answer was “to fix the space bar… it started sticking recently for some reason.” Not a word back, but from the look on her face knew she knew. 🙂

Yeah, not a great move on my part. It worked yesterday, but it ain’t working today. I guess I need a new keyboard

    Thanks Mike E.

Yesterday’s game reinforced all I need to know what the Dolphins’ focus needs to be and has needed to be for quite some time.

Can we please make OL a priority next year for the benefit of the entire team”s success? That includes success for any QB, any RB, and the defense.

  5. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Nice write Mike E….. and yeah we ain’t far off from the Bills with more to come.

Parker, Hurns, Williams, Grant and Wilson all on board for next year. Seems one thing we don’t have to worry about. Not such a bad WR posse.

  6. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It amazed me how many TFL and just hits in the backfield and hammered at QB before barely before the ball got there. The OL was completely overwhelmed time and again. I had to stop watching.

Looked up for a Grant run back. Awesome.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The OL was so bad….you can’t possibly think a rookie or a Rosen-type could ever LEARN or succeed in that kind of setting.

Just saw the news on Tua. Typically, a dislocated hip does not require surgery. I know, mine right one was dislocated in 1998 and it was over an hour or more before they put back under anesthesia. It hurt likes fuck with the slightest movement.

He had additional posterior acetabulum damage…where the hip bone sits. I say he too fragile to survive the NFL.

4 serious injuries in last three years. Risk is too high for any 1 or 2 round pick based medical history alone.

We need a team of picks (all hits) next draft.

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
There’s a scenario in which the Dolphins take Andrew Thomas in the first round, which would make the Laremy Tunsil trade look basically pointless.

Do these guys think before making these tweets? We got two 1st rd picks for Tunsil and a tackle like Thomas could be on a rookie contract for 5 years. The reporters who cover the Dolphins love to twist everything into the negative. SMH

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

WTF? If we turn the #1 we got this year for Tunsil into a high quality LT, then it’s beyond incomprehensible how that can’t be considered a win for us.

If he wants to complain about a pointless pick, complain about the Minkah trade. That is the one we’re bound to lose on, lol.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Please don’t give me a rundown on why we traded Minkah. I know what happened and I get the reasoning the team puts forth, and I still disagree with it. 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL @ Kong, I didn’t like how the Minkah situation went down either. I was a fan of his and thought he was a building block.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way the Steelers and Texans are going we’re looking at maybe #14-20 with both of their 1st rd picks. But let’s not get too caught up in that. We also have two 1st rd picks in 2021 and four 2nd rd picks the next two years along with other picks and FA.

We keep acting like if we don’t have a top 3 pick and three top 10 picks overall this year all is lost. We all know that doesn’t guarantee anything. Just add good players and don’t worry about if they’re franchise type guys. We’ll probably have 20 new players next year. Maybe more and there will be more talent added than what we have now. 🙂

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This draft should be an absolute blast to watch. The whole offseason we’ll probably feel like kids in a candy store. It can’t get here soon enough…can’t remember the last time I ever thought that in the middle of a football season lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Absolutely!!! And we all know how things happen. Maybe one 1st rd pick really balls, another needs some time and the other has an injury. Then one 2nd rd pick really steps up, the other is just okay at this time. Then a couple of other draft picks play better than projected. FA upgrades the talent base and half of them really pan out. Some guys already on the team progress. Even with just that, we’re a more talented team and should be more competitive next season. Phase II does not mean glorious winning. LOL

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Maybe we will take down and pick up more picks…lol

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      I’d love it.

We’ve had some off seasons this last decade that were supposed to be epic. I don’t want to talk about it…..

I believe this one will be different.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Im not excited about picking number 4
If we are 4, maybe it makes sense to trade down with one of those teams with multiple first rounders

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As a fan I don’t ever remember a time when we had the draft capital and FA cap space to really change the team that we have over the next two seasons.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, we have no idea who will be there at #4. You make it seem like the 1st round ends after #3 with talent. Why trade down, we already have two more 1st rd picks and two 2nd’s? You don’t want a team loaded with 50 rookies. LOL

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Lol…..Tim come on! You know there are only 3 picks in the first round!

Okay, I’m. It saying we must trade down
But chase young looks special and if he’s out of range, I will be a bit disappointed

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When did top 5 in the draft become disappointing? Randy always said top 10 is huge. Now if top 4 isn’t good enough, what are we doing to ourselves?

We also have options to make trades and add prospects we really believe in, and not just take whoever is left. We have a draft board and capital to trade up. It’s still November, folks. February/March is more accurate how the draft may go down. 😉

  18. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So many guys here spend so much time looking at players so they tend to get attached to these guys. The higher we pick in round 1 makes it less a likely we get those players they cover. Doesn’t mean we’re not going to get great players. I think if we’ve learned anything this season is that no player is bigger than the team. We’re going to look for players like that. You can defend Minkah the Mutinous as much as you like, his actions didn’t fit that.

He’s more RG3 than Jackson or Watson, so those that think they are getting the next one of those guys will be sorely mistaken.

      • D's avatar D says:

Think Mike Vick, more power runner less speed. Both have cannon arms but they overthrow their passes, they dont set their feet and their instincts aren’t to go past first read without taking off. Can you build a team around him, sure, but he will ever be consistent. Jameis Winston is anther player that comes to mind as a similar comparison, cept Jameis isn’t as mobile.

Tua surgery reported successful. I wouldn’t touch this guy. He’s going to get broken in the NFL.
    ————————————————–
I consider this a gas mask scenario, if he drops significantly, i dont see picking him up for his potential at a bargain rate. I was never in the Tank for Tua camp, i also saw him as a guy who’s best trait opens him up to be hit and in the NFL hit really hard. I dont think though i drop him off my board, i just look for a bargain pickup, and if he made it to our later 1st round picks, i would really consider him at that point if we didn’t take a guy we liked better with the top one.

    • D's avatar D says:

      i can see i meant….

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Considering until the last week he was considered the mostly consensus #1 pick, I can understand your logic. I personally still wouldn’t use a 1st on him. If he dropped to late 2nd or 3rd maybe I’d consider it, but that injury history really worries me. QBs get pummeled in the NFL, especially our QBs, lol.

      • D's avatar D says:

To me a first round pick in the 20 range is already in the second round talent range. Rarely do you have a draft where true standout elite talent dips that low. This draft has about 5 really elite players.

        Young
        Thomas
        Jeudy
        Tua
        and maybe Burrow.

These are all the player where its like they are once in a while players. Jeudy is rare as a receiver in running all routes well, having good size and great speed. Young, is a wrecking ball, Thomas is a once in a decade kind of OL with great feet, strength, technique, etc and then you have Tua and Burrow, where Tua is one of the best QB prospects of the more “new style” Qb’s that are still great passers. He’s Wilson with a lot better physical skills. Watson with better mobility. Jackson it a better arm and passing traits. Only thing not to like is the injuries. Burrow is a complete QB. He’d be more comparable to Goff ability wise but he’s way smarter.

So to me is Tua is in the 20’s range, we are already past all the players that make the risk you are taking really a risk.I dont think you are missing out on any player in that range that would offset the what if of hitting on that pick.

    Could have put Love there.
    Your thoughts on him?
    ——————————————————
I was just comparing him to current and previous QB’s but yeah Love i can see how he sorta compares, but Love is just a really raw prospect that i dont think has had quality coaching around him. I saw a little of him that says to me he doesn’t always overthrow the ball, he has some touch ability, but he has a tendency to throw to the receiver and doesn’t seem to understand the concept of throwing to the spot. When he misses, in the NFL that shit is going to be a pick. He also seems to me like he doesn’t do great on getting past his first read which means he may not really be football smart. Again, might be coach-able but he is a risk. There is a lot of “potential” in him, but i wouldn’t hang my hat on him being a franchise player. They are probably pretty comparable to me, Hurts and Love, both probably would be better drafted as backups to like Watson, or Jackson, or maybe Swiss army knife kinda players like Taysom Hill. You could select either of them as a mid rounder as a low risk high reward type of prospect, but you definitely keep someone else as your starter until you figure out what ya got with them.

    • D's avatar D says:

I see more potential in Love being able to be coached into a more true NFL QB than i do Hurts.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i think he drops from number 1 overall discussions, but i think he is still in consideration for top 10. Its not an injury you really dont bounce back from. By combine, when he gets medically checked out there, thats when he either will or wont drop as a prospect. Jaylon Smith went from top 10 to top of the second round his year, and thats with the evaluation at combine saying he has the dreaded “nerve damage” see how successful he has been. I think a lot of worries about injuries aren’t as worrisome to the NFL evaluators because they know a perfectly healthy guy can go on to have an injry plagued career and one injured in college doesn’t necessarily have those injuries follow him in the pros. My issue is his style of play, i think that will open him up for injury, but this current injury and recovery from its really doesn’t enter into my evaluation.

    Tim,
I’m not really sure what’re you’re referencing about me and top 10 picks. I prefer to keep them when you have them and trading up into the top ten if you’re already really close. But, I rarely like trading up. I don’t fall in love with players, so I never feel like I gotta give up picks to get somebody. I have talked about trying to get into the top 10 for QBs if you gotta, but I said that was really just a QB thing. Statically, it’s always better to get a higher pick. Exceptions aren’t the rule.
    ***
Having all these high picks for the next couple years kinda changes your draft strategy, to me. You have the ammunition to do all sorts of things you wouldn’t otherwise, but it doesn’t mean you should. If you only have one pick….well then….give me the highest one I can get. Lol

We have a lot of options to acquire coveted talent. It’s not about finishing with 12-13 total picks it’s about finding 6-7 prospects you think can improve the team. Add that to FA and the players you already believe in and you have a very different team and hopefully a good one next year. I think we’ll have at least 15 new players next year not counting the bottom end of the roster churning. 15 players added that we feel we can build on to become a good team. This is the most important offseason of the Grier/Flores tandem. In 2021 they’ll have quite a bit to work with again, but they have to hit on it and get it started in 2020.

    Mike,

I haven’t read the Mr. Mercedes books, but I’ve watched the series. Brendan Gleeson is one of my favorite actors. I’m also a big Stephen King fan. He’s my favorite hack writer of all time. I’ve read a lot of his stuff, and watched every adaptation I can find. Can’t wait for the newest adaptation of The Stand which comes out next year. I always loved the cheesy 90’s TV mini-series adaptation of that book.

Just watch It 2 last night, and I thought it was pretty good. A lot of stuff straight from the book. The only thing I didn’t really like was the de-aging they used on the kids. I remember M13 and I had a conversation about it after the first chapter of It, wondering how they were going to keep the kids looking the same, and the answer was painfully obvious at times with the de-aging. Not really a fan of that technology, but it didn’t detract from the movie, and it did let them keep the kids in the 2nd chapter, so good and bad I guess. Either way, those that liked the 1st movie will probably like the 2nd.

    Cheers 🙂

    ———————————————–
Trade up trade downs, stay put, its all a matter of talent depth and how important any one person is to the overall improvement of your team. There are scenarios, not seen by us as fans, that lends itself to any of those strategies, so its never really something that we can predict or say whether it wa a good or bad move until a few years down the road. I can see scenarios for each of us.

If we pick at 4, our top target QB is gone, Chase Young is gone, Thomas is gone and we dont really have a guy at 4 that flips our switch, drop back a little, get a similar quality player, pick up some draft capitol. I dont see a problem with stay put and take BPA at 4 either. I also dont see an issue packagin another 1st and moving up to get our guy, if they are strongly feeling this guy changes the direction of our team. Notice i said they, thats the key part, we dont know whether the prospect is or is not that guy for our team for our staff, etc. Tey do know that so just accept the manuvering they do as whats best for the team.

Thats said, i think its about quality picks, and hopefully ones that pan out. This idea that we must hit on our top 5 picks is silly. No amount of homework done will ever give you guarantees on a prospect and id be glad to hit on most of them. I mean id really question things if straight out the gate, not one of them showed any promise, but if in a year or two we look like we have 3-4 solid contributors, and some top level depth players, im happy with this.

You also have to question your expectations on when they show they were a quality pick, first year, after a couple, maybe three? Too many variables to congratulate or condemn a pick as its made.

I’ve been watching Epinesa lately and he’s the kind of beast we need at end, he’s becoming one of my favorites for this draft.

  71. D's avatar D says:

For me its about the ranges of this draft. I said before i have there to be about 5 elite prospects, another 5-6 stud prospects, and then a big cluster of low first high second players who all stack up about the same.

So if ya block it off
1-3 Because even among the 5 elite there are probably 3 game changers.
    4-5
    6-11
    12-56ish

If im at 5, id consider trade up to a top 3 spot to get either Thomas, Young or in my case, Burrow. If im at 3 or above, i dont trade up, i dont trade back, i stay put and take one of those three, if im at 4, id consider a trade down to 5, but not lower, unless the payout was significantly in my favor, id consider a trade up to at least 3, again, best deal in my favor, or id stay put.

Likewise if im 6-11, im looking to trade up to the top 5, stay put or get a really good value trade down. 12 and below, id be really open to a good trade down deal, even a trade out to very top of the second if the deal was good enough.

Im sure they have target players in mind too, and you have to scratch plans to do your draft like this if you have a guy you want thats in danger of being selected by someone else.

If we’re at four and Burrow, Herbert and Young are gone then I’m taking Epinesa. Immediate starter on our D line.
    ————————————-
I dont think he is in the same class as the other guys. I would consider taking him at 4 a waste of the value of that pick. Id traded own to 6-11 and target him there.

  73. D's avatar D says:

I think Herbert is in that 6-11 range too.

  74. D's avatar D says:

If Cincy has the number 1 pick and it certainly seems likely at this point id think they would take Burrow, possibly Tua if he has an immaculate medical screening at combine. At this point the Skins would be 2, and my guess they would take Young, outside chance they would take a QB. Then us, or at least thats how it stands right now, i take Thomas, choosing to stay put. If we were at 4, and assuming Thomas was taken at 3, im either taking Jeudy, whatever the top rated Q on our board is, or id trade back to 6+ and pick up some draft capitol. I most like stay put and take Jeudy.

From a talent perspective, he is a top 5 guy to me. He is a once in a decade type player at WR and even though i dont really value WR like that, from a talent perspective, and a player that can make a huge difference in our offense, i think he would do that.

But the process was NOTHING like what I expected.–Will tell all probably Sunday when I return from another convention. This time WITH my Driver’s License!!
    ——————————–
Got to see almost all of the Bills-Dolphins game. My #1 impression can be summed up in this: Bills recorded 7 sacks; Dolphins recorded ZERO sacks. Both Miami’s O-Line and Miami’s pass rush were HORRID/NON-Existent!!! WE could draft a young Dan Marino and we’d STILL have a shitty team!!!
According to something I read in Wikipedia, young Mr. Grier has been with the Dolphins for 20 years. And beginning 10 years ago, Grier started to play a key role in WHO Miami picked in the draft. Probably just a coincidence that, in 2009, Mr. Steve Ross took control of the team. Or was it 2010?? Anyway, their careers are forever linked. And, to me, that makes GRIER PART OF THE PROBLEM, NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION. Hopefully, the next Dolphins’ owner will show Grier the door in short order. NOT SINCE JAKE LONG have the Dolphins drafted someone early in round one who became an All-pRO AND A TRULY DOMINANT PLAYER!! Too bad Long’s career was shortened by injury.
    —————————–
NOT GIVING UP on Miami’s chances of finishing 3rd or 4th in their round one draft position. And if one of those teams is the Giants, they likely WON’T be taking a QB in round one. So there’s still hope for another run of losses by this franchise. A key MAY be LOSING to the inept BROWNS, who, like the Fins, have squandered an abundance of draft picks and also failed in the free agent market. Right now, I give the Brownies a SLIM edge over this horrible Miami team that NOW lacks even one average NFL back!! The departure of Walton leaves the Fins with THE WORST GROUP OF RUNNING BACKS IN THE 54 YEAR HISTORY OF THIS FRANCHISE!!!
    —————————
OH, and don’t give me this “Everybody agreed to ‘blowing-up the team, so you’ve got to live with the consequences.” That’s a god-damned LIE pushed by Ross ass-lickers!!! I NEVER agreed to this, just as I never agreed to anything like TANKING to improve the franchise!! You improve the franchise by picking good players, NOT BY RUNNING THEM OFF TO OTHER TEAMS!!!
    ————————–
The remaining players on this team, for the most part, have played as well as they can. THEY AREN’T TANKING, in my opinion. But those in charge of the roster have made “Tanking Moves” in a mis-guided effort to gather draft picks which, if the same clowns are doin’ the picking, will be just as bad as the picks from the last 10 drafts have been. And we’ll be no better than the Cleveland Clowns are THIS YEAR!!! WE NEED:

    1) NEW OWNER
    2) NEW GM or head of football operations
    3) NEW Director of Player Personnel
    4) and a NEW, IMPROVED GROUP OF SCOUTS

Those who have created the “Climate of Losing” must be replaced, as in “BLOWN UP!!” And this hasn’t really happened since Don Shula was brought in to be the HC/GM and Joe Thomas was brought in to be Director of Player Personnel.
