Dolphins fight but eventually give in to visiting Bills, lose 37-20

Josh Allen had his way with the Miami defense, throwing for 3 TD’s and rushing for another. Allen threw for 256 yards hitting on 21 of 33 passes and rushed for 56 yards and a TD. Jakeem Grant did his best to keep the Dolphins in the game, busting off a 101 yard kickoff kick return to make it 23-14 before the half. Fitzpatrick threw the ball 45 times because the Dolphins simply couldn’t run the ball. Ballage continues to underwhelmed gaining just 9 yards on 9 carries although to be fair, he was met in the backfield on at least half of those carries the Bill’s defense just smothered our run game. This is the type of game where Fitzpatrick usually has either 4 TD’s or 4 INT’s, but surprisingly he finished with zero in both statistical categories. The O-line just didn’t show well, and our offense was hindered all day.

DeVante Parker had another good dayfinishing with 7 catches for 135 yards. With Preston William’s done for the season, both Parker and Allen Hurns will be the beneficiaries. In fact, the Dolphins signed WR Allen Hurns to a 2 year contract extension. TE Mike Gesicki was not a big part of the offense yesterday catching only 4 passes for 18 yards. Patrick Laird caught 6 passes for 51 yards and added 1 carry for 7 yards.

The defense was without LB Raekwon McMillan and also DE Taco Charlton. The defense looked out of sorts, although the kids in the defensive backfield continue to give strong effort. These guys like Nik Needham and Ken Crawley and Jomal Wiltz and Eric Rowe are all gamers, and even if they don’t start next year, they seem like high character guys that are good to have around.

The Bill’s are 7-3 and one of the better teams in the AFC. Devin Singletary is starting to get rolling and to have future hall of Famer Frank Gore to lean on doesn’t hurt either. They’re a better team than we are right now, but we played straight up with the them for a while in both games, with more talent infused next season, we should close the gap. There’s hope, you still see good things each week, and despite being undermanned, this team has fight in it.

GO DOLPHINS!!

I used to really like Reshad Jones. We should have traded him and got something for him before the year started. I wanted to trade him as soon as the season ended last year. We really got nothing from him this season. Shame. Not that we could have gotten a lot for him, probably a 4th at best, but it’s better than what he gave us.

    OD,
Were you this bitter against the organization when they (including Shula) pissed away Marino’s career and never won a SB during that time? Just curious. I have to be honest it is the thing that bothers me the most as a Fins fan.

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i agree that ross has continually hired people who have no exp as a hc, the only person he has hired that has a great resume was parcells and he took us to the playoffs that year.
sparano was a good first time hc, he knew what it took to be a good team, he was very committed to the run game, the problem he had was Henne, Henne had horrible footwork, with that dbs were able to get the jump on him.

I think Philbin did not have enough control of the team and was more or less a puppet, he did not want to draft Tannehill, he wanted the Oak QB and he certainly was right.

Gase was a joke, he had no idea what it takes to be a successful HC, he had a great running game and threw it away, when he traded Ajayi he also traded away his job and credibility

he has done it again with the hiring of flores.

i’m not saying we can’t have success with flores due to him being a 1st time hc but it hasn’t worked out in the past.

we shall see, i like how flores approaches the game, he’s made some questionable calls, (vs pitt with the jailbreak, going for it on 4th dn early and not taking the 3) but it really doesn’t matter as we are not a contending team at this point.

what i like about him is he seems committed to the running game.

why Ross continues to hire first time HC’s is a mystery to me, he could have landed andy reid, hopefully this first time hc pans out.

It didn’t bother me at all that we didn’t win a SB with Marino while it was happening, I enjoyed so much watching that team play, I had a legit reason to get excited for football Sunday’s and especially all those marquis appearances on MNF. It was a great time. In retrospect, looking back on it I can lament not winning, but in the moment, it was fantastic to be competitive year in and year out.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Oh, I agree that in the moment it was awesome. I actually had season tickets for 5 of those years and was in person for the famous NE game….to date, still my favorite sporting event I ever attended. It also hurt a lot each loss and each year when they didn’t get to the SB, especially as his career was coming to an end. Mondays after a loss were really hard for me back then…LOL. I was never more invested as a fan, that is why looking back now, I am really disappointed that we did not win a SB back then. I probably would have partied for a week straight…LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Are you talking about the return of Marino game, home opener in NE? Still to date one of my favorite games if not my favorite game ever. That was so damn exciting, and it felt so good to see that Marino was himself again.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If it hadn’t been for Pete Stoyanovich and the Bills, Marino might have had 2 or even 3 more Super Bowl losses in his illustrious career. Actually that 1990 team might have even won the SB if not for the Bills.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Mike, that is the game I am referring to. It was nuts in the stadium.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – The Bills were a juggernaut. They had exactly the recipe to beat us. Strong running game and a great receiver out of the backfield (TT) , strong enough passing game and an excellent defense with one of the best pass rushers ever in Bruce Smith. The Bills to me were like the Atlanta Braves of the 90’s. Formula for greatness. It’s crazy that neither team really won championships though.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, there is a reason they went to 4 straight Super Bowls. If memory serves, they knocked us out of the playoffs 3 times in the 90s. Although IMO the only time they beat us that we legitimately could have won it all was in 1990.

    • D's avatar D says:

I hate the Bills probably more than either of our other two rivals, because this was my ERA od dolphins football and i remember the back and forth there was between us being the best and them. I hated, and pretty much still do, Jim Kelley, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed. and Cornelius Bennet.

Wyoming, what site do you use to do your mocks???

Joe Burrow will not be there at pick 16. he has been off the board by pick 3 in most of my fanspeak drafts since Tua got hurt.

  15. D's avatar D says:

Mike, to be honest i kinda do think that Burrow could wind up slipping, i dont really see it, but i think there are avenues that he gets some bad marks in the combine process. I think the combine is made for players like Hurts, Love, Tua, etc to kinda show off their athleticism, and a guy like Burrow might slide a little in the discussion with several more athletic guys to compare him against. Again, i doubt he drops that far but its possible.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If any of the top QB prospects even participate at the combine. A lot of them don’t and have their own pro days.

      • D's avatar D says:

If i was burrow, i probably wouldnt. I might participate in some fo the throwing drills (which should be his strength and show his prowess over them, but id be involved with the med check, interviews and maybe throwing skills comp, id skip the athletic stuff because he doesnt have anything to gain from those imo.

      • D's avatar D says:

If i was Hurts, Love, and especially Tua if he is healthy enough to do it, id be at combine showing off. If i was Hurts i might even do some workouts with the RB and WR groups too. I think he would be a stud “big slot” WR.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Burrow looks pretty athletic to me for a tall QB. He can run a bit and he shows good toughness.

      • D's avatar D says:

Any competition really depends on who you are in competition with. On the game tape, i agree he moves pretty good, but in the underwear Olympics, he is going to get smoked by those three i mentioned and probably a couple of the others, he wouldnt be anywhere near the top 5 in most athletic categories.

Thats what im saying, skip those 40 times and BP, cone drills, etc, and just do the passing drills and interviews so they can focus on your leadership and ability as a passer and not how fast you run in your underwear.

Because the tank job is supposed to over by next season. Duh…

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Speaking of Rosen, where have the two giddy teenage girls who were cheering so loudly this offseason when we wasted a 2nd round and 5th round pick on him been?

Not sure if I am one of those two, but I liked the trade. Still don’t think was a waste either. Only thing sure of is that Fitz is better at playing behind a bad OL. Should have a better one next year.

no sir! you were not silly in your false praise. You only ever expressed hope that he would work out and excel there were some pretty far over the top declarations made about him.

Did you hear that Myles Garrett is trying to use the race card about why he swung the helmet at Rudolph? He said Rudolph used a racial slur at him. A week after the incident trying to get his suspension overturned. That’s pretty damn low.

I just read that, and it’s pathetic.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was reported that when Rudolph chased him and that’s why he swung the helmet. Nobody heard anything. Why did it take a week to bring this up? Because he’s lying.

    How bout dat?

Very nice to see him developing and playing well now. Early in the season whenever you saw a huge busted play there was #40 chasing behind it. He was a main target for my ire in the early games. He blew a lot of coverage the first 3-4 games.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

To me its shocking, because he couldn’t cover the scrubs in preseason, got burned as much as anyone I’ve ever seen. Might be as shocking as us winning 2 games.

Coach Flores has been the coach of the year thus far.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Flores has fought through the worst 2 game start to an NFL season in history, mutiny, lack of talent…to being where the team is today.

I’d have to say that, if you asked me about the state of the franchise after the Dallas game, I would’ve said it’s as bleak as it gets. To turn that around is just short of a miracle.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t agree that Burrow should skip the athletic part of the combine. It doesn’t matter what Tua and Hurts do in those drills, it’s about evaluating Burrow’s athletic ability, not comparing him to those two. Any athletic ability he shows is a plus.

That’s 13 players that are expected to upgrade the team. Some are targeted to be difference makers, others are solid role players and some rooks finding their way, but with upside. That’s the start of a new team.

2019 was about draining the old guard that didn’t win enough. It’s tough to deal with as a fan, but because we have the cap space and draft capital the next two years, we have a lot of resources to get better sooner than later.

For next year, I think we can do it with less. For example, I don’t really think we need TE. RB(2) could be anyone if we get the OL right. WR will be ok with Hurns, Preston, Grant, and some other player. We probably won;t find two really good DEs with all our other needs so we’ll have to wait until 2021 to fix that and hope Taco keeps improving until then.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gesicki and Smythe? We need another TE.

I don’t think WR is bad, I only added one. We need a jolt of talent throughout the team.

If we could land this between FA and the draft we should be on our way.

    OT, G, C……

We ha ev every one of those positions now. We need to find or even better yet, coach up the players we get. I am jaded the past few years now, but there seems to be positive development of ghe guys we have now so I, nay don’t say it, have hope for this regime

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who is our LT, C and G other than Deiter who I think will be part of the future? Jesse Davis will play a role in that as well. Kilgore is solid but he’s always hurt now and he’s on the other side of 30.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oddly enough, whoever they put back there are doing OK. The secondary hasn’t been a huge issue for us. Gotta give the staff credit on that.

So did Watson rat out the coach saying that Thomas didn’t want to play football anymore or did Watson say that about Thomas to the coach?

I used thedraftnetwork.com mock draft machine this time instead of “FirstPick.com. Their player rankings seem to be more up to date. Also, you can click on the players name and you’ll get a popup with the player pros and cons instead of having to go to another website like FirstPick does. Burrow keeps going #1 overall to Bengals. Dammit!

    4 Andrew Thomas, OT Georgia
    16 Derrick Brown, IDL Auburn
    25 K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE LSU
    36 Jacob Eason, QB Washington
    62 Jaylon Johnson, CB Utah
    68 Trey Adams, OT Washington
    143 Devin Duvernay, WR Texas
163 Reggie Floyd, S Virginia Tech
180 A.J. Dillon, RB Boston College
    190 Jonathan Garvin, EDGE Miami
    214 Jon Runyan, OT/OG Michigan

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

QB came down to Eason or Fromm. I think if you could take Eason in one hand and Fromm in the other and smash them together, you would get a really good QB. LOL Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Love all went first round. Was going to take Love at pick 36 but he went in 1st.

When lived there was a ten-year waiting list for season tickets…. any season tickets. And then came Snyder. Wouldn’t doubt that a lot of seasons go to companies, lobbying firms and such who are having trouble even giving their tix away this year with the Skins so bad though.

This turned out good but didn’t address CB until late but Blackmon can play both. I drafted by player ranking instead of player projection and got Burrow.

We just need to focus on drafting BPA. That means Best Player Available . If the best player is available at the time we are on the clock. We should draft them. That’s what that means.

Wyoming, LSU RG Damien Lewis had several pancake blocks yesterday. He is massive at 6’3″ 320 and not a fatty. He is a serious beast! He is a Senior and will be in the draft.

Brown’s favored by 10 at home. Actually thinking that confusing back end with a lot of no names in there might be a good match up for us against a young QB like Mayfield. Not calling this one a loss right off the bat at least.
