Dolphins fall to Jets and controversial Pass Interference call is big part of winning score for Jets. Jets 22 – Dolphins 21

It sure doesn’t look like Brian Flores is satisfied with remaining in the #4 spot of draft. In fact, he’s furious that we didn’t fall down a spot or two. I think we’re all to be objective about it, there was definitely contact early there, but these things happen often and there doesn’t seem to be a consistent way that they call them. As soon as they signed off from the Dolphins game the Ravens vs Bills broadcast came on and immediately Ravens DB Marcus Peters breaks up a pass intended for WR John Brown. In doing so Peters arrives early and has one hand on the shoulder pad and then swipes with his other arm and knocks the ball away. It was eerily similar and there was no call on the field. There was no review either. Earlier in the game there was another call that I believe went our way. Jets LB James Burgess was called for holding on Albert Wilson and it looked like he barely touched him. That was the play the ball appeared to be intercepted and run back for a defensive TD. As it turns out Burgess never actually made the catch and the TD wouldn’t have counted, but I didn’t think there was any holding on the play. Things even out usually, I’m not crying over the penalty at the end.

As some of you were discussing here, Ryan Fitzpatrick set a franchise record for rushing yards in a game with 65 yards. It’s correct, I looked. David Woodley’s highest rushing total in a game was 58, it was the season opener in the 1981 season, oddly enough against the Jets. The Dolphins finished with over 100 yards rushing for the 2nd time this season, the other was against Buffalo 10/20. Of course the fact that our QB led us in rushing continues to be a bad sign for our running backs. Laird topped Dolphins RB’s with 48 yards on 15 carries for a paltry 3.2 average.

DeVante Parker, our version of the Phoenix was grounded yesterday with a concussion. Isaiah Ford did what he could, but the offense wasn’t the same without Parker. Gesicki was shut down and much of that had to do with some poor accuracy from Fitzgerald. He was off the mark with quite a few throws, throwing with too much pace, throwing too high and throwing behind. It happens, but it wasn’t a great day for Fitz.

The sleepy one, Andrew Van Ginkle woke up and recorded his first NFL sack. Kicker Jason Sanders hit on of 7 of 8 FG attempts, and the miss was due to a bad snap, not his fault. In addition, his kickoffs are routinely deep, so Sanders looks like a keeper.

Next game on the schedule is against the NY Giants, who of course share the same stadium in New Jersey with the Jets. Eli Manning will be the QB once again as he gets to have his farewell tour for the next 3 games. QB Daniel Jones is injured and won’t play the rest of the season. The Giants have Saquon Barkely and the beginnings of a strong D-line with Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams, formerly of the NY Jets. Injuries have riddled the Giants offense, they haven’t had their full compliment of receivers all season. Golden Tate was suspended 4 games and then later battled minor injuries. Sterling Shepard battled concussions and worst for the Giants, TE Evan Engram has been out for the last few weeks with a foot injury. If we can stop Saquon, we have a good shot in this one.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I think the difference between the play in Buffalo and the play in our game is that Brown’s shoulder was not turned as a result of the contact while in our game we turned the shoulder of the WR

It looked like he turned the receiver more after it was already missed but it’s splitting hairs

I don’t think it was a terrible call, but I’ve seen far more egregious interference plays where it wasn’t called on the field and was challenged and the team that didn’t get the call on the field still didn’t get the call. It’s just how inconsistent they are. That’s a problem

Good write Mike E. I’m amazed that Tanny never ran for more than 65 yards. He played WR and ran I think a 4.6 40. When we drafted him had some long Steve Young type runs in my dreams at least. Still can’t figure out why wasn’t more of that with him.

That’s actually realistic as to what it might take, or maybe a bit more than that. Trade chart value — if can still trust — for #4 to #1 is a #12 pick overall. That values out at #15.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Get rid of the spot foul also and make it a 10 yard auto 1st down!

      • D's avatar D says:

There is no perfect rule with that penalty. If you do it that way you can abuse it to prevent any pass that might be completed over 10 yards because i just hack the WR anytime he gets behind me.I guess you could make it a three strike thing too, and suspend the DB if they get called for more than 3 “fouls”

  12. D's avatar D says:

It was a bang bang play, i aw one in another game, equal to the contact that didnt get called, and the announcers called it good defending, i think you could say the same about Needham’s play and i think you could call it for contact before the ball got there. That was one of those judgment plays where i think the call on the field, or lack there of should stay. It is what it is but i think Flores confrontation of the refs was warranted and i liked seeing that he was concerned with the fact they let other plays simlar to that stand uncalled but then reversed that one.

We made 7 times as many field goals than punts yesterday.

I bet that’s something that may have never happened before.

  14. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Steratore on the broadcast didn’t seem to think it was PI, and he always reversed calls.

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t know if my memory is faulty or if it is correct, but I feel like the league did move away from the spot foul on PI for a couple of years sometime in the 90’s and made it a 10 or 15 yd penalty, and the reason they moved back to the spot foul was for exactly the reason D posted above. If you get beat bad deep, you just tackle the receiver and only give up 10 or 15 yds. Am I crazy or did that really happen?

IMO there are two viable solutions to the PI review call. Either get rid of it entirely (my preference) or make it only reviewable by a coach’s challenge. On scores, TOs, or the last 2 minutes there are NO calls from the booth for PI review, you have to have a challenge left, and you have to throw the flag. (Obviously this means the rules would be adapted to allow coach’s challenges in these circumstances specifically for PI.)

If that call yesterday were at another point in the game, and the Jest challenged and it got reversed to PI, I wouldn’t be nearly as mad. Although I also believe it’s possible the ball was at the receiver when the shoulder turn occurred, it was close and I could live with it either way. I personally agree with D that it should have stood as called or not called on the field.

What really infuriates me is the call comes down from NY on a very subjective play, it literally decided a game, and there have been numerous times this year where I haven’t seen the call for a review come down in very similar circumstances, including the next damn game they switched to in Buffalo like 5 minutes later, lol.

Tim nailed it yesterday when he said wait until this happens in the playoffs. And i think this will be a more regular occurrence than what happened in New Orleans last year, so they’ve made the problem worse, not better IMO.

OK, tirade and overall whining about the end of that game over. I’m going to let it go now, lol.

I had a feeling I might have made that up, lol. I have no idea why I have that so firmly in my head.

    • D's avatar D says:

Idea behind it being a spot foul is of course, assuming if not interfered with the receiver wuld have caught it there. but a lot of the calls they are calling them on have no flipping way of knowing that would have been true. They seemed to have ditched the uncatchable part of what use to be a mitigation. I havent seen a call in recent memory where the ref said they were picking up the flag because the ball was uncatchable.

      • D's avatar D says:

They have also inserted rules like the past 5 years rules, etc that have further muddies the waters. Now you can get an interference call even if the ball isnt thrown to that player.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I just mentioned the uncatchable pass thing last Sunday. It does feel like it is no longer a rule. Like you said, they have changed the catch rules so many times recently, it’s hard to keep up.

Nonetheless, it is an issue the Texans will have to correct or overcome as they gear up for the final three games of the season with two coming against the Tennessee Titans.”

    • In his next day press conference on Monday, Coach Brian Flores didn’t want to focus on the penalty on Needham, instead pointing to the fact that his team had plenty of opportunities to win the game and could have done a better job stopping the Jets on that final drive.

    • Flores did, however, discuss the anger he showed responding to the call. How his emotional response wasn’t about him, but his players. How much they put into each game and each week of preparation. How badly they want to win. How important this is to them. It all fueled the fire deep inside of Flores. “Again,” he said, “this isn’t about me at all.” Class act, don’t you think?

Every single thing I read, see, or hear about Flores gets me more and more pumped for next season. Get this coach some talent to work with and we are going to see results.

      • Four days after he was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, wide receiver Mac Hollins was active and playing Sunday against the Jets. Shouldn’t be a surprise considering we have seen similar stories play out on this team all season long. Hollins played out of necessity with both Parker and Wilson injured and the depth chart thin to begin with. While he didn’t catch a pass, he did draw a 38-yard pass interference penalty in the third quarter that led to a Sanders field goal.

Nothing for Hollins to get excited about. Everything that happened on Sunday led to a Sanders FG, lol.

Before giving seer credit to the braided coconut lets consider this: How many of those are from rounds 2-3. Im only giving credit to someone who had a legit shot to be anything more than a backup. Ill be honest i really dont think ya get OL starters, or ones you can count on as long term starters past round 2, though i think sometimes the depth of the draft pushes some 2nd round graded prospects to the 3rd. The real problem we havent drafted OL well is we havent put an emphasis on it.

You want a long term LT, get him out of the top 10, most likely you have to get him out of the top 5. You might get a gem after that but it starts dropping off really fast past those ranges. OG canget one in the late 1st or top of the second, but not much deeper. OC probably same general range as OG, RT probably more middle of the first to late first, but i think you can get a pretty good one into the first of the second.

The problem is they arent sexy picks, dont get the fans juiced up, and a lot of times you want to grab the top pick out of a athletic skill position because they can really be electric. QB, DE, WR, CB, even RB and TE. You just have to sacrifice excitment for stable base, which having a good OL and DL does for you.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not that I would want Brady here, but he would be a great person to show any QB how to prepare as a professional. That guy works hard, works with the receivers and always strives to win. That’s the type of person to learn from.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I work with a Bills fan who has been saying since the start of the 2019 season that Brady ends up in Miami next year. I’ve scoffed at him all year, but the rumors are starting to become unsettling.

There’s the coaches connections with Flores and O’Shea. Miami is east coast, which no doubt Brady wants to stay out there, and apparently Brady has a house in Miami. From our standpoint, like you referenced, there would be nobody better to mentor a new franchise QB, not to mention who better to reinforce the new Miami Dolphins mentality and culture that Flores is building.

I still have a hard time seeing it, no way you keep Brady and Fitz, and far more importantly, I’m drawing a damn line. No way I’m rooting for Brady. So I just don’t see it happening, lol.

    • D's avatar D says:

Considering his age, i think id being him in as a special advisor or perhaps assistant QB coach, kinda a starting gig to get his new career started and we reap the benefits of parsing out some of the QB knowledge he has in an educational setting for our QB’s. Fitz would be a better field general than Brady i think, but having Brady as part of the QB room in a coaching capacity could have its merits.

The whole idea of this constant churning of the roster is to find hidden gems moving forward into next year. It’s a good process.
    —————————————————–
Yeah thats pretty much how it looks to me, kinda o like we are auditioning players and getting real game looks at them. I dont think cutting Lammons means that he wasn’t as good as this other guy they brought in, they just know that they could be getting looks at several players, getting time with them in the position rooms to evaluate their leadership and football knowledge so when next year rolls around they have that 90 man packed out with quality players that they know a lot better than it being the first time they have ever seen them in person. Its kinda of like backwards building a team, getting the best players for the next man up scenario before locking in on your starters. To me the best team is the one with the shallowest bottom, not necessarily the highest top.

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The big problem with Brady would be salary. He’s always been willing to take less to help the team but if he’s getting paid as a QB, and not a QB coach or advisor, you can’t pay him upwards of $15M per year to be your QB. I mean you could, but would you want to?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Obviously we could afford it, but Brady to us as just a QB makes no sense. I could see him as a player coach though. They used have those in baseball….ever been one in football?

Brady is NOT a good mentor. He is a ME tor. Like Favre he has not interest in helping younger QB’s “take his job”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You may be right about his attitude, I don’t really know what kind of QB mentor he is or would be. If so, then we don’t have anything to worry about.

Signing him would have to be with the explicit understanding he is the starter for a year or two for the purpose of mentoring our new QB, then has to hand the reigns over. Hopefully this is all a bunch of garbage talk, and he and his husband stay the hell away from our Fins.

  76. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tom and Gisele are worth an estimated $580 mil. Whatever Brady does it won’t be about the money. Actually makes him wanting to go to a team like the Phins if the role is more than just playing QB more likely.

  77. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Brady is not coming here. If he goes anywhere other than the retirement home it will be to a ready made contender and that is not us

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – A QB doesn’t have to mentor another a QB to be a good example. He can just watch the way that player prepares and runs meetings with the WR’s and how he conducts himself in the QB room and on the field. I don’t think there’s many that could do that better than Brady.

  79. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I hate giving Coconut braids any props but he’s right about our OL woes. Almost every NFL team is loaded with starters that are 3rd rounders or lower. If you look at KC specifically, they have several really late rounders as starters and are very light on OL backups. They still won their division for the 3rd straight year. Flores looks like he will finally be the guy who teaches our young guys up.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not true. Most teams have OL woes. There are 18 teams with losing records in the league. Even some of the better teams have OL issues including the Pats.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Ok…and there are 14 that have winning records and I can bet they have some OL that aren’t first and second rounders. It’s how you optimize your talent.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My point is that just because they’re not 1st or 2nd rounders and starters doesn’t mean they’re good. OL play is pretty bad throughout the league. Hopefully we’ll finally address it however we acquire them. I think Flores wants to be a strong running team. I’m sure we’ll be targeting OL in FA and the draft.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Very true. In the age of salary caps and FA, good enough is all you can expect.

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

New Age, part of the problem with OL play is very few young OL are NFL ready and teams can’t practice physical very often due to CBA rules. I hope we find good enough soon. 🙂

If you can put together a solid OL you’re playoff hopes go up quite a bit. I don’t care how the game as changed, the game is still won in the trenches most of the time. We see it every week.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Over the last 15+ years we simply have not been good enough in a lot of areas at different times. We’ve never had a sustainable quality team during that stretch. A couple of good years and that’s pretty much it. We need better players in a lot of areas now. But this is just the beginning. One thing we can say now is, we’re competitive and have a chance to win most weeks. That’s what impresses me about Flores and his staff, we’re competing with a mostly backup roster.

What happens when we add upgraded talent? 😉

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are positions I don’t think we have to target big time in FA or the top of the draft, but mostly I think just adding the best talent you can at any position changes things. You get better overall. Good players make a difference. I always look at FA and the draft like produce. If the market for apples is bad, don’t buy apples. Buy what looks good.

  87. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim,

I agree about the problems and find it sad that even the owners care less about the game than a little more money. Coaches need that extra time to make decent players. Not good, just decent.

I find the offseason to be just as interesting as the regular one. The team building aspect can be done in a lot of ways but there are some foundational truths that seem to always be true. You build in the trenches. You need 5-6 blue chips. Defense wins championships, etc, etc, etc.

It’s always interesting to see where a team builds their strengths. Tom Brady was average at best last year but a dominant defense, Gronk, and some good timing got them the ring. The Rams were awesome but a couple plays this year(and some lost talent) will probably make the difference between SB probable and no playoffs at all. The margin is thin and that’s why I hate the refs so much now. They literally can affect not just games but entire seasons. Too much power, too little responsibility, and too many bad decisions. The NFL needs to do better.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed 100%!!! The NFL can be safe and let players play. We all know what’s out of line. How many coaches say football is not that complicated? It’s about playmakers at any position. Doing your job becomes a collective good. The more doing your job you have, the better the collective good.

Outside of a few players who are legit starters, and some are down for the year, we’re looking for another group of players to become the core to build on in the offseason. We’re still in Phase I, nothing has changed with the plan since January other then we’re deep into the season and the team knows more about the players they have, and how they fit or don’t. That evaluation will set the plan for the offseason. I agree that’s also a fun time of year. 🙂

  88. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

So according to Miami Dolphins website , we have 17 players listed as IR… I actually thought was going to be more , as it seems every week we put at least 3 on IR… anyone know if there is a limit ?? Or, as someone stated just above ( sorry source I’m lazy) 🤡 will we have a full 90 players between IR and roster by week 17 so we can get a jump on next season .. keeping in mind a lot of these will be replaced, hopefully upgraded ..

I do look forward to what Flores can do with a more talented roster , when ya see how hard our No Names have played and competed in recent weeks.

We focus on Grier a lot and rightfully so, but behind the scenes you have veteran college personnel man in Marvin Allen (Assistant General Manager), and Reggie McKenzie (Senior Personnel Executive) who specializes in pro talent. We’ve seen that at work all season. There’s only so much you can do in-season. This is also just getting started as the FO learns about their personnel.

It’s not just Grier wearing the king crown. He had thick enough skin to bring in personnel people who could take his job.

Phase II should be fun. 😉

Anyone else think we tackle better than in the recent past? That’s a Belichick trait. If you can’t tackle you can’t play here. It’s not perfect or anything, but I see better one on one tackling than I’ve seen in years from this team.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think a lot of teams are probably regretting passing up on Parker in a cheap trade (if reports are to be believed). I’m glad the team persevered with him and didn’t listen to the likes of me. I would have jettisoned him more than a year ago, lol.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was cool with keeping him once saw the amount of the contract, but as cheap as it was shows how far he’d fallen. He’s always had the measurables and play skills, but injuries aside seemed well just lazy. This year is what we thought we got in the draft.

  96. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

People overstate the OL issue all the time. Frankly, most fans don’t have a clue whether or not the OL is playing good or bad anyway. They see 4 sacks and the OL sucked. Look at Dallas. Their OL is, supposedly, one of the best we’ve seen in decades. So why then is that team 6-7? This game is becoming more and more about the “stars” and the skill positions. It’s where the money goes, and it’s where the draft picks go. You still need guys who can make plays on offense no matter how good your OL is.
    ***
And, just watch. When the draft comes around, everyone will be spouting the ridiculous refrain of: “You can wait to draft OL later in the draft.”
