Dolphins hang on to win in OT against Bengals 38-35

I admit it. I changed the channel at 35-12. I think it was when Myles Gaskin got injured. I mean the game was over, right? It’s really not important that the hapless Bengals scored 23 points in less than 5 minutes against us. It sure did make for a more interesting ending though. Bengals fans were probably getting pissed, and I bet some Dolphins fans were getting excited that we might get a better pick in the draft. In the end a Jason Sanders FG won it and all that went away.

How about that Ryan Fitzpatrick? No running game, adequate pass blocking at best, and this guy just keeps throwing TD’s and moving the ball up and down the field. 52 pass attempts, 419 yards and 4 TD’s. Unbelievable. DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki do NOT have the seasons they are having w/o Fitzpatrick. I firmly believe that. This guy is playing out of his mind. His escapability out there is uncanny and his running ability shocks team week in and week out. He keeps so many drives going by eluding the rush and getting positive yards. Major props to Ryan Fitzpatrick who I admittedly didn’t want to see at the helm. I had hoped Josh Rosen would be leading our team but I’m happy that I got to see football worth watching this season because of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I don’t stress over blowing a 23 point 4th quarter lead because this has been declared a stress free season and it’s legitimately been just that. The only thing that upsets me are injuries. Myles Gaskin left with an ankle injury and his status for next week is unclear. That’s a good sign as far as I’m concerned, I thought it was bad. We’ve had a record number of players that have been on this roster so what Brian Flores has been able to do with that is impressive.

DeVante Parker. The boy went over 1000 yards receiving this past Sunday. 64 receptions for 1065 yards and 9 TD’s with a 16.6 yards per catch average. If he had more catches he’d be in some elite company. Mike Gesicki now has 47 catches and 536 yards and 4 TD’s. He’s just getting started . . . These are things that get you pumped about next season. Draft well, bring in some more talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and we should be on our way to being a very tough team to beat. Flores has a bunch of no-names right now. He’s done amazing things. If you bring a bunch of names in here the whole dynamic changes. It may be harder for Flores. No joking. It’s easier to get guys who want to be on a roster to play hard for that spot but bring in a bunch of big name players who believe they’re already there and it’s more difficult to keep these players lit. It will be great to have more talent but I’m very interested to see how Flores handles these new guys. It’s why I feel that we may not necessarily be looking for the big names but possibly more unsung talent. In other words maybe not Tua or Young. We’ll see.

Merry Christmas

Happy Hannukah

Happy Kwanzaa

That’s great to see. For the most part you don’t hear much about DT’s unless they get to the QB. Crazy what a career turnaround Jordan Phillips has had in Buffalo, he has only 29 tackles but he has 9.5 sacks.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I actually think I would rather have the tackles from an interior DL

We have at least 2 good pieces on the DL in Wilkins and Godcheux

We just need to bring some pressure, preferably from the edges

I hope they keep Taco in 2020 to man that extra spot on the DL, could also draft some one

I agree that the rookie contract might save him but realistically, that’s the only thing right now that can save him. I know Godchaux plays DE and DT but he has 71 tackles this season which is also not too shabby. I like Godchaux a lot.

I see “FirstPick” hasn’t updated their draft order or player ranking yet. “thedraftnetwork” is more up to date with draft order and player ranking. I like this though.

Round 1 Pick 3: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU (A+)
Round 1 Pick 22: Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State (A-)
    Round 1 Pick 23: Yetur Gross-Matos, DE/OLB, Penn State (B-)
    Round 2 Pick 3: Creed Humphrey, C, Oklahoma (B)
Round 2 Pick 30: Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn (A)
Round 3 Pick 3: Solomon Kindley, OG, Georgia (A)
Round 4 Pick 19: Lorenzo Neal, DT, Purdue (A+)
Round 5 Pick 21: Julian Blackmon, CB, Utah (A)
Round 6 Pick 3: Anthony McFarland, RB, Maryland (A+)
    Round 6 Pick 21: Jonathan Garvin, DE/OLB, Miami (A+)
Round 7 Pick 26: Reggie Floyd, FS/SS, Virginia Tech (A+)

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    5 Derrick Brown, IDL Auburn
    19 K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE LSU
    25 Alex Leatherwood, OT Alabama
    37 D’Andre Swift, RB Georgia
    62 Jaylon Johnson, CB Utah
    69 Calvin Throckmorton, OT Oregon
146 Anthony Gordon, QB Washington State
    151 Julian Blackmon, S Utah
    164 Patrick Queen, LB LSU
174 Reggie Floyd, S Virginia Tech
    188 Denzel Mims, WR Baylor
    217 Cesar Ruiz, IOL Michigan

May have reached for Chaisson but Young, Espenesa and Gross-Matos were already gone.

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

3 potential F/A targets in the offseason:

Offensive guard Joe Thuney, New England Patriots.

Joe Thuney meets all the logical requirements for a Dolphins free-agent addition. He will finish this season 27 years old and plays a predominant position of need for Miami. Thuney comes from the same New England Patriots pipeline many current Dolphins coaches have, including Flores and offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea. Thuney is not going to break the bank either.
Forecasts for Thuney’s next contract will range but expect it to fall somewhere around an average of $8 million per season. Pats Pulpit of SB Nation forecasted Thuney’s contract extension last winter and came up with four-years for $32.425 million. That is well within Miami’s price range, considering the team will know what it is getting thanks to the Patriots connections.

Defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Dolphins were this close to landing Jadeveon Clowney coming via trade at the start of the season. Clowney, as an unsigned franchise-tagged player, flexed his leverage and axed that deal but don’t consider the Dolphins’ hopes of finding pass rush upgrades gone. Yannick Ngakoue is one of the NFL’s brightest pass rushers and the Jacksonville Jaguars have been playing hardball with his contract situation — or at least Ngakoue would have you feel that way. The Jaguars star was reportedly offered a short-term contract worth $19 million per season over the summer before talks fell apart, meaning the Dolphins are going to have to pay a pretty penny.
Miami was also in the hunt for defensive end Trey Flowers this past spring before prices ballooned and the Dolphins bowed out.
With 35 1/2 sacks in his first four NFL seasons, Ngakoue is a home-run fit for Miami if he is able to hit the market. Ngakoue will turn 25 during the offseason and as a result is a viable long-term solution for the Dolphins via free agency — he will hit the end of a second contract while still in his physical prime. The speedy DE is projected to command a contract worth nearly $18 million average in salary per season, according to Spotrac, and Miami could afford to pen such a deal.

    Cornerback Byron Jones, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys cannot pay everyone. The team has already handed out nine figures in contract extensions in 2019 and recent reports indicate Jones hasn’t made any progress on a second deal. Imagine Jones and Xavien Howard pairing as perimeter cover cornerbacks in Miami’s defense? Yes, please.
Jones will be 27 years old at the start of the 2020 season, an ideal candidate to serve as a part of Miami’s rebuilt future for years to come.
The Dolphins reset the CB market in 2019 by extending Xavien Howard on a $77-million deal this summer. Could the Dolphins double down on big-money cornerbacks?
Jones hasn’t yielded the ball production Howard put on display before inking that contract. Jones has defended 19 passes over his last 29 games but has logged just two interceptions in his five-year career. Turnovers pay the bills, meaning Jones is a realistic target that will likely cost less than Howard and still provide Miami with a shutdown pair of CBs in Flores’ aggressive defense.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The first 2 make a lot of sense to me but I wouldn’t mind making a run at Trae Waynes who is a 27 year old first rounder and may be ready to take the. Exit step

He’s been good in Minnesota but not all pro

But he has the skill set to excel and would be a solid 2 behind Howard

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I wonder, when teams provide/publish an injury report, why are they not violating the HIPAA laws?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No because I am sure it is in the player’s contract to share basic medical information. Accordingly it would be waived by the player and thus no Hippa violation occurs. Hippa only is violated by an unauthorized disclosure of medical information

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Texans pick might be the right time to take best back available. I like Laird and Gaskin as backups. Gaskin was grinding out the win against the Bengals and when he got hurt the game changed.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Could be, but I’d expect maybe 2nd RD for a RB or later.

  45. Ken's avatar Ken says:

You could find good RBs later in the draft. The only time I feel you go early for a RB is for a rare talent like Barkley or Gurley. I don’t see anyone like that in this year’s draft

  46. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim
I’ve seen a lot of mocks with us taking a RB with those late firsts

But I really think between Swift, Dobbins and Taylor (who are the top
3 for my 💴) we should be able to land one in the 2nd round

I have the early 2nd penciled in for it. If we are 5th on tiebreakers with a few teams we might be much higher in the 2nd round

I even think there is room to wait until the 3rd for a back

I do think we should try to draft one in the first 2 days though

The closer we get to the draft the more I see how deep the OL group is
So I don’t think multiple OL with our first 4 picks (I’m including the early 2nd rounder) would be a bad idea

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

As an example I saw this on twitter today
I don’t know who this guy is, but I agree with the point he’s making
It’s a good tackle group and when you consider that along with the fact that there will probably be 2 centers with first round grades (which I think is unusual) that makes for a strong OL group

It doesn’t appear as strong at OG unless you are projecting guys like Wirfs at OG

    • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

      Tavien Feaster

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not all in at RB in the 1st but would not be surprised if we did. I really think we want to be a strong running team. A late 1st rd RB you have for 4-5 years over 4 in the 2nd. Just saying!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I see what you are saying
But Ken is right, there is not a Gurley type of prospect
So to get to a strong running team it make sense to use early pics on OL and then try to push RB a little farther

I do like those top 3 a lot
And there’s other guys like Chuba Howard, Entienne or Najee Harris that can go before any of those guys I call the top 3

And guys like Zach Moss, Cam Akers and AJ Dillon that will
Probably be drafted in day 3

I think the Dolphins are thinking like you are and want to be a strong running game. But I just think to maximize draft value, it might be better to hold off on that position until the 2nd

  48. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Go OL early

  49. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I feel we need to go OL, passrush, DB early in the draft. To me, that is our weakest area’s of need.
I have to agree that there is no Barkley or Gurley in this draft and we can get quality anywhere in rounds 3-5. There are some really good ones if they declare for the draft. I may have left someone out I like more but my top 15 RB’s are:
    D’Andre Swift, UGA
    Jonathan Taylor, WIS
    Travis Etienne, CLEM
    JK Dobbins, OSU
    Najee Harris, AL
    Cam Akers, FSU
    Chuba Hubbard, OK ST
    Zack Moss, Utah
    Clyde Edwards Helaire, LSU

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Patriots need the win in order to be home for the playoffs, at least the first round or two. They will be trying for the win.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope we kick the shit out of them to be honest. They definitely want to win the game so if we do win it would be a big win and a nice way to finish off the season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh me too, but I just don’t want the Pats having an easy go of it if they do win.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya, understood. I don’t believe that a win at the end of the season necessarily carries over to the next, but I think if we can play straight up with NE and maybe even knock them off, it couldn’t hurt when free agents from other teams see that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The only time I see wins late in the year carrying over to the next season is when a team on the rise beats a top opponent on the road where they haven’t in years. Even though winning in New England would be great, our team is going to look very different next season. The only carry over I see would be the coaches knowing their team better and the players who come back can share the standard that is expected.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, what do you think of the Betances signing?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like it a lot Tim. He could be as good as anyone in the game when he’s healthy. They basically took the money they saved on Cespedes and threw into relief pitching, which we desperately need. I know he had a partially torn achilles so that could be a problem, but it didn’t require surgery, and if he’s healthy and ready to go he he makes that bullpen a helluva lot better.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Lugo and Diaz if he can rebound, that’s three good arms. We all know Familia is a roller coaster. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Diaz and Familia both. Hard to watch those two guys give away games. I don’t think there’s a chance that Diaz is nearly as bad next season unless his confidence is completely shot.

i like Barkely but i’d pass on a Gurley type, Gaskin played good against the Giants, we also have Laird and Ballage. not sure we draft a RB on day 2. get better on the OL and get a pass rusher. I really think one of our 1st rnd picks will be an edge rusher.

  56. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I just hope we make a game of it in NE, our last meeting we got pounded 43-0

    • canamdolphin's avatar Philip Bijeau says:

Dolphins penalties in that game were 4-22, NE had 5-54. The refs penalize both teams nearly equally when NE plays on the road. When NE plays at home, however, opponents are penalized an average of 8-68 while for NE it’s 5-41. Expect the refs to favor NE on Sunday, calling a crucial penalty on the Dolphins, sending Flores into orbit.

  57. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Sucks most all bowl games are on ESPN and we don’t get it at the office. Is there a way to stream games on ESPN? Is it free? So I can watch at work.

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Going to check out the OL and DE Espenesa for Iowa tonight when I get home. Not sure if Espenesa is a fit for us though. He plays in a 4-3 or 4-2-5 defense. He is big though, 6’6″ 280.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m sure Wirfs and Espenesa will be good

But what I’m really curious about is Alaric Jackson, who’s all over the place in terms of evaluations

He kind of seems like he’s been getting the short side of the stick BX so many people are checking out his teammate on the other side

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Also going to check out Wash State gun slinger QB Anthony Gordon tonight against Air Force after the Iowa game.

  60. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In case you didn’t know, Jacob Eason has declared

So I think Hurts, Eason and Love are each officially in the draft

Herbert is a senior so he’s in too

We will probably hear from Fromm after the sugar bowl
And Jamie Newman after the pinstripe bowl (today)

And Tua after the the Citrus Bowl

    I don’t know Newman’s story
He’s just a bit name I hear a lot about lately

But when Love and season both declared, it makes it less likely that the 2021 QB is deep
And this year is actually pretty deep

That doesn’t bode well for waiting until 2021 to select a QB

If 2021 only has Lawrence and Ehlinger, we better have a high pick to address QB

  61. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This Sunday I will be relying for
    Lions over Packers
    Giants over Eagles
    Redskins over Cowboys
    Ravens over Steelers

I don’t think the Houston/Tenn game matters now that Houston clinched the division
We just gotta hope they lose in the first round

I expect us to lose on the rod to the patriots who have a bye to play for, I’m not rooting for a loss but I’m somewhat indifferent on this game. If we won, we need chargers and Arizona to lose it we can fall from 5 to 7

The bengals have picked up the 1, so who cares what they do

I would say the odds of the redskins, giants, lions and ravens winning this weekend are slim, but if it happens we move up, maybe even to 2

The good news is you don’t have to rely on the bengals to win anymore

  62. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This freshman QB for UNC will be one to keep an eye on. He looks like he is going to be a good one. Had 35 TD’s to 7 INT’s and 3347 yards freshman year.

  69. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I really like Epenesa as a football player. He’s tough, disciplined and a team player/leader. I think he has the tools to be a solid DE/DT that will give you some versatility along the DL because you can move him around. But, I don’t think he has the athletic talent to be a high end sack guy. Granted, he wasn’t used that way in Iowa. That really is my only issue with him. He’s already about 280, so he’s probably end up more of a 3-4 DE. I just don’t see first round talent. He’s not a fast twitch guy. He’s kind of a plodder. Strong as an ox but not real athletic.

Wirfs and Jackson both have the talent and measurables to be very good NFL players. As of a couple weeks ago word from Iowa was Jackson was staying in school. I’d draft Wirfs in the first, preferably mid to late, but he’s got work to do in pass protect.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

UNC QB Sam Howell finishes his freshman season throwing for 3,641 yards, 38 TD’s and 7 INT’s. Not bad. Will have to see how he progresses under Mack Brown. Added to the BBM watch list. LOL

So have M13 and David left the blog for good? Sorry if that’s the case. We all have our opinions of each other for whatever reason. It’s just a blog.😜

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well, got to see a little of Wash State QB Anthony Gordon. Air Force was running the triple option to perfection and Wash St could not stop it. Air Force set a record for TOP at 43:24. Wash St offense only had the ball for 16:36. In that time, Gordon still managed 28-42 for 351, 3TD’s 0 INT’s. He has a nice quick release. I also think he has very good accuracy. Some of his passes may look a bit off the mark, but when you look back at it, he is throwing it right where it needs to be in tight windows allowing the receiver to shield the ball from the defender.

When doing mock drafts I am always thinking of Swift and Taylor as the top of the class. I know Etienne is a very good RB but always forget that he is one of the fastest players in college football.

I was also watching tape on RB Cam Akers. I was like meh. He is supposed to have 4.41 speed but I don’t see it. Looks like he is just lumbering along. Don’t see another gear.

Wyoming, I would put Chuba at #6 on my list behind Najee Harris. I am dropping Akers out of my top 10 RB’s.
    D’Andre Swift, UGA
    Jonathan Taylor, WIS
    Travis Etienne, CLEM
    JK Dobbins, OSU
    Najee Harris, AL
    Chuba Hubbard, OK ST
    Zack Moss, Utah
    Clyde Edwards Helaire, LSU
    Keshawn Vaughn, VAN
    A.J. Dillon, BC

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well Memphis got in their own way today. They put up a good fight against PSU. Gave up to many big runs. Then couldn’t put it in the EZ enough. They have a heck of a kicker though. 6/6 with long of 51. Gotta give them credit for a small football program.

  85. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dang, Damien Lewis, LSU, one of my favorite OG’s for the draft just got carted off.

Holy Crap, more TD’s than incompletions in the first half? 7 TDs in one half is incredible.

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Right now Dolphins twitter is loaded with people who wanted to “tank for Tua” being upset at the Dolphins for winning games and missing out on Burrow

    Unbelievable…

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Loser mentality. No matter how much evidence that sucking almost never pans out, they still fixate on that once in a lifetime Luck phenomena that ended in 6 years. Andy Dalton isn’t the reason Cincy is 1-14.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Not even 6 years, 86 total games of Luck was the cost of tanking. Zero Superbowls. Zero Superbowl appearances. As fantastic as he was, one man doesn’t win games no matter how much ESPN tells you it does.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I love the draft

And I do think there is a tier of prospects that are better than others

But I know at the end of the day, a lot more goes into winning

There’s no magical wand that fixes everything

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, as if one player is the key to success.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The patriots are going to be associated with one player, Tom Brady

But how many HOF players have been through New England the last few decades

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I know but lots of players played big roles in their championships. It was the defense last year.
