Dolphins hang on to win in OT against Bengals 38-35

I admit it. I changed the channel at 35-12. I think it was when Myles Gaskin got injured. I mean the game was over, right? It’s really not important that the hapless Bengals scored 23 points in less than 5 minutes against us. It sure did make for a more interesting ending though. Bengals fans were probably getting pissed, and I bet some Dolphins fans were getting excited that we might get a better pick in the draft. In the end a Jason Sanders FG won it and all that went away.

How about that Ryan Fitzpatrick? No running game, adequate pass blocking at best, and this guy just keeps throwing TD’s and moving the ball up and down the field. 52 pass attempts, 419 yards and 4 TD’s. Unbelievable. DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki do NOT have the seasons they are having w/o Fitzpatrick. I firmly believe that. This guy is playing out of his mind. His escapability out there is uncanny and his running ability shocks team week in and week out. He keeps so many drives going by eluding the rush and getting positive yards. Major props to Ryan Fitzpatrick who I admittedly didn’t want to see at the helm. I had hoped Josh Rosen would be leading our team but I’m happy that I got to see football worth watching this season because of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I don’t stress over blowing a 23 point 4th quarter lead because this has been declared a stress free season and it’s legitimately been just that. The only thing that upsets me are injuries. Myles Gaskin left with an ankle injury and his status for next week is unclear. That’s a good sign as far as I’m concerned, I thought it was bad. We’ve had a record number of players that have been on this roster so what Brian Flores has been able to do with that is impressive.

DeVante Parker. The boy went over 1000 yards receiving this past Sunday. 64 receptions for 1065 yards and 9 TD’s with a 16.6 yards per catch average. If he had more catches he’d be in some elite company. Mike Gesicki now has 47 catches and 536 yards and 4 TD’s. He’s just getting started . . . These are things that get you pumped about next season. Draft well, bring in some more talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and we should be on our way to being a very tough team to beat. Flores has a bunch of no-names right now. He’s done amazing things. If you bring a bunch of names in here the whole dynamic changes. It may be harder for Flores. No joking. It’s easier to get guys who want to be on a roster to play hard for that spot but bring in a bunch of big name players who believe they’re already there and it’s more difficult to keep these players lit. It will be great to have more talent but I’m very interested to see how Flores handles these new guys. It’s why I feel that we may not necessarily be looking for the big names but possibly more unsung talent. In other words maybe not Tua or Young. We’ll see.

Merry Christmas

Happy Hannukah

Happy Kwanzaa

I’ve kinda kept quiet about Flores for most of the season. Wanted to evaluate him on an ENTIRE SEASON. WELL, after six prior FAILURES, it looks like Ross, on his seventh try, finally STRUCK GOLD WITH THIS SELECTION. Ross’s current lifetime record as Fins’ owner is 77-99. But, FINALLY, we are going to see meaningful improvement! Ross’s 11-year run of failures is FINALLY OVER!!

Yea, it’s really hard to move up with SOS on the last week of the season. Everyone is playing within their division, so there are only a couple games that give you the opportunity to weaken your SOS versus other teams. With that said, Jacksonville is the only team that is within striking distance of the 5th overall pick. …so it will be the 5th or 6th pick.

  56. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t think we will need to move up to get Tua unless someone is going to try to jump us

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jax’s SOS is .488 ours is .486, so even if they lose it wouldn’t go down, because that would put Indy at 8-8. We seem to be locked it at 5.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yes, that’s why Wingfield is calling it lo locked and I think he’s right
We can’t fall to 6th unless there is something I’m not understanding (which happens a lot)

  58. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am not sure we need to take Tua. The way this coaching staff has operated, I am cool with whatever they decide

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well we need OL, a pass rush, maybe 1 player on the DL, 2 RBs and a couple of DBs

      That’s pretty much 10 players
      Add 2-3 in free agency

And you are down to 7

We have 7 picks before the end of the 4th round

There’s room to take a potential franchise player I’d you believe in him

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We need a franchise caliber QB in the next 2 seasons. Tua has potential to be that. I assume we are going to be better next year so I think Lawrence is unreachable so I think we need to take our shot at a franchise QB this year

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d like to have the #1 pick that a tank would’ve accomplished, but we’d have done a big disservice to our future, especially with FA’s. We seem to have a bright future all things considered.

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We need the steelers to lose. cause the Bears have a higher SOS. Though losing to Ravens would increase their SOS, I don’t think it would be enough to make it higher than the Bears so we might be able to move up to 18 with that pick if I am not mistaken.

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fitz’ play is better, since he doesn’t worry about getting hurt. I hope he gets a chance next year.

  62. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Let’s talk draft. Jax is starting over and they have a similar haul of picks early this year. Does anyone see them moving to #3-4 with a new FO and coach wanting to make a splash? They know Tua is the pushed pick for us at #5 and it makes complete sense. I doubt any coaches think Minshew is the answer but would they also be willing to let Tua sit a year until they could unload that horrible Foles contract?

Who do we think would be competition for Tua? I only see Jax because of the rebuild and spare picks.

  63. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am not convinced the “franchise” QB has to be taken THIS year in the first round. That is all I am saying. There might be someone this staff thinks is worth a pick later

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think Rosen is done yet in Miami, he just couldn’t get it done behind that poor OL.

  65. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Cheering for Tannehill now. This would be the first playoff game he’s ever started in. I’ also love to see him and another ex-Pats guy stick a fork in NE next week.

    ——————-
MORE THAN 1 person on this board thinks we need another receiver-type Tight End backing up Gesicki. Unanimous first team All-American TE Harrison Bryant out of FAU led the nation in receptions and touchdowns this season from the TE position. I HOPE someone in the Davie office has at least checked-out Bryant to see if he would be a good fit with the Dolphins. As of this writing, the Dolphins have NEVER DRAFTED a player either from FAU or FIU, both of which art within 30 miles of the Fins Davie headquarters.

It’s not a great year for tight ends. We might take one in day 3. We might even take 2. It’s a position that offers a lot of utility. Belichik used to take TEs every year.

I don’t know who the FAU TE you mentioned was. I don’t see him ranked anywhere. But There is a So Florida TE, Mitchell Wilcox from USF that might be a good day 3 find for us.

Travis Kelce was a 3rd round pick, so that position still gets overlooked.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

PIGGY; Harrison Bryant is the consensus 1st team All-American TE. He was rated 10th best at the start of the year by Phil Steele, but by season’s end CLEARLY was the best in the land, winning the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top TE. And he topped Div. 1 in receptions and TD receptions (I think he had either 10 or 11 TD’s, and over 1,000 yards receiving, the ONLY Div. 1 TE to do both! 6 ‘ 5″, 240.

This “disaster” season when 0-7 could not have ended much better than this. 5-4 over last 9 with a roster held together by Elmer’s glue. Flores seems legit (echoes of the last 5 coaches lol) but today it was clear that the team ‘played for him’ on his return to NE. Fins with all their picks control this draft.
Ken was right about Lawrence… cuz if THIS team wins 5 games, there’s no chance next year’s team sucks enough to get top pick.
