Offensive Line – Current depth chart and needs

Many of us here believe this position will be a major focal point in both Free Agency and in the draft. Of course, the former will determine the latter. How much we’re able to accomplish in Free Agency on the O-line will then dictate how much we need to do in the draft. I’m pretty sure we’re going to try and get at least one starter, maybe 2 in FA. Let’s take a look at what we have now and I’ll outline where we need to improve.

LT – Julien Davenport / J’Marcus Webb

I think both of those players would better serve the team as depth players and not as starters. I’d feel comfortable with either of them in a backup role but I don’t want to start 2020 with either of them manning the LT spot. Both are journeyman type players who can fill in as the starter but neither are guys you build around or with.

LG – Michael Deiter / Evan Brown

I think Deiter has potential to be a bonafide starter in the NFL. I don’t think he’s quite there yet and he needs to work hard in the weight room and increase his strength and balance. It may be one position we don’t go strong with in either FA or the draft. In any case, we need to improve the depth there and that can be taken care of either way. Evan Brown is a backup interior guy both at G/C. He will need to fight for a spot on the roster next season.

C – Dan Kilgore / Keaton Sutherland

Kilgore was a valuable leader in 2019 but I believe we will be looking for a young center to replace Kilgore, or at the very least give him strong competition for next season. I think ideally we’d like to grow a young line together and a young stud center who will make the line calls for a decade or so is a good place to start. I think we’re going to handle this position in the draft and likely in RD1.

RG – Evan Boehm / Shaq Calhoun

I like the toughness Boehm brought with him to Miami but I’m not sure if he’s got the skillset to hold down his position. I won’t be surprised in the least if we look for an upgrade in free agency and then possibly add more depth in the draft. Shaq Calhoun looked overmatched in some action this season. He may need more work or at best he may be a depth player.

RT – Jesse Davis

So this is really the wild card. As so many prognosticators have us choosing QB Tua Tagovaiola, then our RT in essence becomes the proverbial LT. Jesse Davis has made a lot of strides, he really has, but if we make the investment at #5 on Tua you bet your ass we’re going to be looking to protect that investment. While Jesse Davis has improved, no one would be calling him an elite tackle. He’s serviceable, but this is a spot we’re going to have to take seriously if we do indeed draft Tua. If we don’t take Tua, Jesse Davis is probably our starting RT next season and we’ll need some depth there.

In Free Agency, one of the top interior linemen available is Brandon Scherff. Scherff was the #5 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He’s played mostly RG in his 5 seasons with the Skins. He just turned 28 so a good age for a rebuild. RT Jack Conklin is another top player available. I’ll be surprised if TEN lets him go, they traded up to get Conklin at #8 in the 2016 NFL Draft, the same draft that Laremy Tunsil fell to us. Both of these players will be getting premium salaries but the good news is we can absorb that easily. We have the money and we need to spend some anyway and either player would be a huge upgrade for us. Both players have legit skillsets and both of them bring plenty o nasty!

In the draft, Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Willis, Tristan Wirfs, Austin Jackson and Mekhi Bectin head up the OT’s although there are some who believe Wirfs may benefit moving inside. Tyler Biadasz, Cesar Ruiz, and Lloyd Cushenberry head up the centers. We should have a shot at some of the top players even if we take a QB at #5 because we’ll have the #18 and #26 picks too. Plus we have two 2nd RD picks as well #39 and #56, where we can land a solid interior lineman. We’re in a good place, we just have to take care of business!

Next week I’m going to look at the defensive line.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I must be getting old and cranky because I thought halftime show was horrible.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Halftime show was the crotch shot bowl

  3. D's avatar D says:

Looks like it’s actually a close game, SF about where I thought they would be but KC isn’t. Doesn’t bode well for KC to be this close.

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The FB is going to win MVP

  5. D's avatar D says:

Stanger. Text the guy back and get him all riled up and then at the right time suggest that you exchange sexy pics and then go get in some of your wife’s undies and send him a picture. Last time he will text her, I promise.

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ok, can the KC D get 2 stops in a row?

  7. TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

Do you think they’ll try to lift Andy Reid up on their shoulders?

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Guess so.
Not the best SB game I’ve ever seen.

  9. Damien Williams MVP, awesome game!

  10. Adam Gase didnt want Damien Williams, he ignored his phone calls, Williams says Gase ghosted him and hurt his feelings because he gave everything he had to Miami for 4 years

now, Williams wins the super bowl, and Gase is coaching the jests to oblivion

  11. That really hurt,” said Williams. “I was there four years and gave Miami my all. I still have not spoken to him to this day. That hurt me because me and Gase were cool.”

  12. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SOMEONE UP THE PAGE SAID “The Halftime Sucked,” or words to that extent. Me and Mrs. OD totally AGREE!! — It was worse than awful!! –NOW if Damien Williams REALLY WON THE MVP, THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!! Williams would join JAY AJAYI as a former Fins running back who won a Super Bowl in the last 4 years.
    ———-
UP the page at 8:16 I predicted that the Chiefs would win and cover the spread. Admittedly, the 49ers defense played better than I thought they would. But the Chiefs STILL scored 31 points!! That KC offense is going to be tough to stop for quite a few years.
    ———
FINALLY, congrats to Andy Reid for getting that monkey off his back and PROVING he really could win the big one!! He has one of the best offensive minds in NFL history.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Congrats Chiefs! Great game 49ers!

Feel good for the Hunt family, Andy Reid along with Mahomes (face of the league now) and the rest of the championship Chiefs. The NFL needed this.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Popular music always changes. The great thing about today is you can create your own listening experience if you so desire. You don’t have to rely on popular. 😉

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought the dancing part of the half-time show was great. The special effects were dazzling. The audio was hit or miss, but it’s hard to get good acoustics in that mode of presentation.

Marching bands don’t sound real good either, and their dancing SUCKS.

I thought the song selection was perhaps too far into rap at times, but that is a matter of taste not talent. However, the difference between those two women and the two male rappers was apparent. Those guys were so mush-mouth that their vocal styling lacked charisma.

It was meant to be a show, ultimately, not a concert or music to listen to with no video. So on that score, it was awesome.

    Round 1 Pick 18: KLavon Chaisson, DE/OLB, LSU (B)
Round 1 Pick 26: DAndre Swift, RB, Georgia (A-)
Round 2 Pick 7: Trey Adams, OT, Washington (B)
Round 2 Pick 24: Darryl Williams, C/OG, Mississippi State (B+)
Round 3 Pick 6: Damon Arnette, CB, Ohio State (A-)
Round 4 Pick 39 (COMP): Devin Duvernay, WR, Texas (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Mitchell Wilcox, TE, South Florida (A+)
Round 6 Pick 6: Drew Richmond, OT, USC (A+)
Round 6 Pick 18: David Dowell, FS/SS, Michigan State (A+)
Round 7 Pick 31: Benito Jones, DT, Mississippi (A+)
Round 7 Pick 36 (COMP): Jaron Bryant, CB, Fresno State (A+)

    • D's avatar D says:

Mississippi State DT/DE’s have been crushing it in the NFL, Chris Jones being one of them, Montez Sweat, K.J. Wright, Fletcher Cox, Kyle Love, Preston Smith, Pernell McFee, They also produce some pretty solid OL too. They are one of those programs where the in college they dont really obtain a ton of success, but their players come to the NFL pretty well prepared.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The show was catered to the MeeAHMI crowd. It was well done in that regard. I think the music and dancing represented the city well. It was supposed to be upbeat and vibrant and it was.

The game wasn’t a great game by any means, I was expecting a little more. I thought Damien Williams should have won the MVP, but I could easily understand why they went with Mahomes.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Good summary. i feel the same way, especially about the game, it was meh. Not a bad game, just nothing that stood out. No outstanding performance or memorable moments.

It’s nice to see Reid get a ring. He was the Marino of the coaching world (the best without a ring).

  19. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Musical and entertainment tastes vary. Not my idea of a good show at all. They REALLY lost me when the pole dancing part began. Great thing for kids and young adults to see on a national stage. I think they forgot the lap dancing part. I thought it was very inappropriate and actually disgusting, but just my opinion.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t like either artists music per se, not my style

But I barely noticed what some people are calling inappropriate

It Didn’t jump out to me as being vulgar

I admit I’m pretty loose about these things
But I am just not seeing anything offensive

The nfl and broadcasters have a right to make their own decisions about what’s appropriate

So I think it’s a good thing to hear feedback from people who say it’s not appropriate

But I personally don’t think this stuff is big deal and I don’t want to see networks or corps get “prudish” (forgive the word I can’t think of another) bc it’s not for everyone

These two women have very successful careers
Theirs a market for what they do
For everyone who thinks it’s inappropriate, some one else barely notices it
JLo has been showing her ass off for a few decades now. People want to see her ass! Lol

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem with the halftime was it’s the same shit they put out there everytime Miami has an SB. I felt like I was watching a rerun.

I dont think Damien should’ve won the MVP, because everything the Chiefs do on offense is done because of Mahomes, anything else is success off of that. It’s like Edelman winning an MVP.

A non QB deserves one on O, in my opinion, only if the D doesn’t game plan for the QB, like in Tenn.

I wanted SF to win, because in 5 years we may see KC with 2 or 3 more titles. Mahomes compares to Brady as Young compared to Montana. Mahomes and Young are more athletic with bigger arms.

  21. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Didn’t care for the halftime show as well, one part had a zepplin reference on the physical graffiti album which i thought was kool.

they also sure showed a lot of crotch.

as for J-LO she’s nice for 50 years old however i don’t think i don’t think the outfit worked.

they should mix it up to appease different types of music, little rock and country, all they did was pop and rap

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That outfit looked like granny panties in the first phase before she changed in to the silver 2nd outfit

I also thought the outfit was a little weird

But At 50 – wow she looks good

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – It was never lewd or crude (IMO), but like Rop said there were a ton of crotch shots and for some reason J-Lo had her hand near her crotch a lot too which was weird. Lots of ass shaking and upskirt camera angles.

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I guess it means the game failed to meet standards, when the conversation is about the halftime porn expose! 😉

  24. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

All these posts about the halftime….makes me want to go watch it. Ass and crotch from Shakira and Jlo…..sounds pretty good to me!

  25. TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

I didn’t watch the halftime show (or most of the game), because I just don’t care. They’re not appealing to my demographic with J Lo or Shakira, or with any of the other acts they put up there, they’re trying to get the younger demo and the wives of males who would not otherwise be watching. I’m not mad or bitter about it, it’s just what it is- Youth shall be served.

    • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

^That’s not a well thought-out statement. Physically, either of them appeal to my gender. And at 50 for J Lo and 43 for Shakira, they are in my demo, but don’t necessarily appeal to it from a musical standpoint, and neither did the rest is the announced performers.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As a Dolphins fan I don’t even think about this.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have something he can drink. Like besides Damien Williams, none of those guys had any impact. Why do these guys just love trying to make Dolphins fans miserable?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s as if they have a disease. Even Damien Williams doesn’t affect me because he was a FA and signed with another team two years ago. It happens. So is the point that as long we had these three still on the team, we would have won the Super Bowl? LOL

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

“We are all fleshy vessels waiting to die someday”

      -Adam Beasley

    • D's avatar D says:

They are just mad because if they ever had to cover another team they would still suck as writers.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It means absolutely nothing (other than I’m happy for Williams and Moore). How many Chiefs and Niners players were on other teams before landing there.

Are Dallas, Jacksonville and Carolina also drinking it in for Moore and Henne?

  27. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I keep reading from different writers and multiple sites that the PI call against Kittle towards the end of the 1st half was questionable. What a joke. He clearly pushed off and extended his arm which created the separation. They even broke it down quite clearly in replay. He pushed off twice, and the first almost certainly wouldn’t have been called because he didn’t extended the arm.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought both Shakira and J-Lo looked great.
I did not see anything inappropriate at all.
I’m not even sure to what you might be referring unless you mean their outfits were a bit brief, but they are dancers. A person can’t dance unless they wear dancing clothes.

I suppose J-Lo did show a bit of lace protruding from under her outfit, but no more than the Sumo wrestlers do. Now THOSE are inappropriate costumes.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought the game was not played well.
There were lots of mistakes on both sides.
Unforced errors, as they say in tennis.
Mahomes threw a bunch of passes off target.
The SF coaches did not give their guys their best chance to win
and especially mismanaged the clock and the momentum.
There were misplays on STs, blown coverage in the DBackfield.
Sacks were missed without spectacular QB play.
Kittle did little or was ignored by his coaches / QB
    SF should’ve run Mostert more.

    etc.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There were even a bunch of unnecessary penalties.

But I loved that choreographed multiple piroutte shift by SF, so they could direct snap it on the touchdown run.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was KC, but yeah, that was amusing. It actually kind of looked liked Tim’s 80’s dancing aerobics guys gif, lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No games are played perfectly. I thought it was a good game because it had ebbs and flows. There was a point where I thought the 49ers took over the game but they couldn’t hold it and against that Chiefs offense you’re never safe with a 10 point lead. Also the Chiefs defense is underrated.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just curious, the Dallas Cowboys used to have the entire O-line come up at one time and then put their hands back in the dirt. Would that be called a false start in today’s football?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve always wondered at some of the finer rules regarding oline movement. When audibles are being called, the oline will often lift and turn to catch the signal, but I’ve never seen it called as a false start, and it almost never causes a jump by the defenders. It must have something to do with the QBs action as well?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I kind of recall them saying things like “ready, set”. Maybe when they said ready the whole team flexed and then went back down, but once the QB said “set”, they couldn’t move again? Not sure, and I can’r recall when they all came up and went back down.

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

With the halftime show, as a man I dug the outfits. But there was a moment they were twerking, and you got serious bare ass jiggle going on from Shakira (which was great, lol), but it’s not what I would call family friendly. I personally didn’t mind, but my buddy wasn’t keen about letting his 10 Y/O watching grinding, twerking, and pole dancing.

Of course my buddy is also a responsible parent that takes raising his kid into his own hands, and since he figured it would be too risque for his tastes, he gave his kid an activity before the halftime show. Crazy 😲

  34. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not the real NFL world — but the writer and fan world that feeds off them post-SB.

KC won — need a crazy QB and skill position set That’s how you win the SB in the modern age and that’s what you draft for.

If Niners had won — Proven once more that D wins championships….. that’s what you draft for.

  37. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I wanted KC to win because of people I know and Reid, but ESPN and such made it really hard to cheer for them. I think it’s not healthy to push QBs so much in a team based sport. Mahomes was NOT very good yesterday yet that’s all anyone was going to talk about if they won(which they did and people have). Williams iced the game. Shanahan lost the game with bad decisions. Mahomes may have the ball in his hand every play but so did Garapolo the last two playoff games. Did that make him MVP of those two games?

Good game and I agree with Bookman. Pretty terrible halftime show since it’s a national viewing not one just for 35-50 year old men. The SB ads were awful as well but the game was really good.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

KC wouldn’t have won without Mahomes. Not all football games are clean and dominant stat games. I thought it was a solid contested football game.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t forget Mahomes was sacked 4 times and escaped a dozen other. The 49ers defense is not an easy opponent. To me they are the best defense in the game. The Chiefs are the best offense. It was a clash of the titans type game. The two best teams competed and it wasn’t about stats. It was about confidence and will vs. insecurity and second guessing.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It was a great game. Mahomes was far better than Jimmy when it counted.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Man do I agree about the ads. We talked about it all game. It seemed like this was one of the worst bunch of SB commercials in recent memory. The Tide commercials, which last year with David Harbour were great, were the most annoying of them all this year. And I can’t count the number of times we weren’t even sure what the commercial was selling (on top of not being funny). As a whole a solid fail, lol.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He would give us that playmaking edge rusher we’re looking for. He’s not great, but he is an impact edge rusher. It all depends on what his market is.

In case you were taking a piss…… this was by far the best SB commercial.

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s just say we don’t go QB at #5, we go DT Derrick Brown. We already signed a proven FA vet edge rusher in FA – still young, first time FA.

Now our front 7 is Brown, Wilkins and Godchaux as our main 3 interior DL who can play all the positions. You add a legit proven edge rusher and then let Charlton, Biegel, Van Ginkel and others compete for the other side, and/or as depth and role players.

Baker and McMillan as our two main classic LBs. That has the makings of a very good front 7.

  40. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WE SAW the Bill Murray add. Above average, but just barely so, in our view. Mrs. OD and me thought the google advertisement where the old husband dialed up pictures of him with his departed wife (back when she was still alive) when they both were younger was a real heart tugger.
When you guys get older you’ll understand. As of today, I now call my wife once more time per day than I did before this add. A loving relationship is a REAL TREASURE. And it can end in a moment’s notice when you least expect it.

  41. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

NEW AGE: I TOTALLY AGREE that Mahomes was better than Jimmy G at crunch time. At one point, Jimmy G was 15-17 in the 3rd quarter. But, at games end, he was 20-31 and a paltry 5-14 down the home stretch. Meanwhile, Mahomes was nails when the game was on the line.

BTW; Kansas City plays at Miami this season. Get ready!!

  42. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Had to watch the halftime based on reviews….

Not my choice of music but good eye candy. I dont see how this was worse than that shirtless guy last year rubbing the California tattoo on his belly the entire performance.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

And it’s really no worse than the average cheerleading dances.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, but they usually have a freaking ad for State Farm or some other shit blocking the cheerleaders when they slowly pan to them as they’re gyrating and dancing so you can’t see anything. lol

        Tell me that’s not true!

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – I liked the google commercial, it was a very nice commercial, but honestly, no way that dude figured out how to upload all those photos and then figured out how to tell google how to categorize them and then tell google to remember all those things.

  44. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

my take on the Google commercial was a man in the beginnings of Alzheimer’s and setting it up so he would be reminded of his late wife everyday?

  45. D's avatar D says:

    Mikey,
I believe the OL can do that as long as the QB isnt under center. Once under center or set to take snap from shotgun, they cant move.

    • D's avatar D says:

What the Cowboys were doing back then was a synchronizing of the OL. Kinda a ritual of sorts to help them all be in sync.

    • D's avatar D says:

In HS we did something similar we would get down, clap our hands to sync, and then get down on our hand, then QB would get under center.

  46. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Yeah, pretty sad bunch of commercials. The Bloomberg commercial was an outright lie and the Anquan Boldin/Corey Brown commercial was misleading at best.

  47. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Not worried about Tua’s throwing. We know he can do that. Worried about his hip. Dennis Pita was able to run routes and catch the ball in Baltimore 2 years after the same injury. he played one more year then injured the hip again and was done.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dunno, that injury is hard to predict, it shouldn’t have any long term or aggravation worry, but you are right there are instances where he does. Still we should hope he doesnt get hit as much or as hard as Pita did.

  48. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Theoretically it was rhetorical.

  49. D's avatar D says:

I think Brown, IF he reaches his potential could be Suh, and Kinlaw probably more like Chris Jones, because he can really get up in those passing lanes well as push the pocket from the middle. I think though my money is more on Kinlaw reaching his potential than Brown, but not that Brown will be a bust but he is so use to just destroying people on pure talent alone. Those guys make me nervous transitioning, like Phillips he didn’t really turn the corner until last year after he got that chip on his shoulder when Gase sent him packing and pissed him off.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Thanks for the Cowboys response. I honestly don’t remember whether Staubach was under center or not when they did that. I’m going to have to find some highlights to see.

I do not like that draft at all, D at best and thats only because i dont hate the Okudah pick. Still him over Brown, no way. Beckton who seems to be a really risky pick imo. one of those physical freaks but still pretty raw guys who have potential bust on them. Then Jordan love who is the same deal but even more so. I do not think that draft has a high chance of success personally.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I’m not saying that’s a bad draft
But I am saying we are straddling bust potential with those picks

      Jordan Love might be great
      But he’s a project
So he’s risky pick, even at 26

And I agree with D about Beckton
Of all the OL available, he’s the one that jumps out to me as the riskiest

Again, he might be really good

But I don’t love spending two of our firsts on those two high risk players

Okudah might be very good but I also don’t love spending the 5 on a CB
I would probably take OT or DL at 5 if I want going to take a QB

  54. D's avatar D says:

Love in the second round, im ok with, if we had like the 31st pick maybe in the first, so trade back and take him, im getting more comfy with the pick then. I dont like Beckton, i dont think he is a first round guy either. I also just dont like CB over DT this year. Lets get those trenches full of nasties and then start with the divas.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Belive it or not I’m okay with him at 5

But at 18 or 26 it kind of reeks of “we aren’t really sure, and we want a QB so, let’s take Love”

At 5, I will leave the draft feeling like they spent the 5 on a QB they beleive can be their franchise QB

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I like 5 and 26 a lot
I’m just a little queasy with a RB in the first, especially with a player like Espenesa on the board

      But I love Swift
It would take all my willpower not to buy his jersey and ruin his career…lol

And this concept can work really well if we pick up 1-2 OL in free agency and spend a 2nd on OL as well

Did you happen to notice that Caesar Ruiz the center from Michigan went in his first (in the 20s) – that’s an interesting development

After the OK center stayed in school, I started hearing a lot about Ruiz and then the LSU center as well

We might be able to nab a high quality center in the 2nd to go along with a OT in the first

And if you pair that with a RB like Swift, we are a different team immediately

Just curious, the Dallas Cowboys used to have the entire O-line come up at one time and then put their hands back in the dirt
    _____________________________________________

the reason they did that was to disguise the shifting back set, when the ol would rise the backs would shift and the lbers couldn’t see the shift over the ol, innovative for his time tom landry was a great coach.

    ————————————————————
Im with Piggy on this draft, i like the draft, and its good for a team trying to get a strong nucleus around a new franchise QB, BUT i do think RB in the first is unnecessary. Swift is by far the best overall RB prospect of this draft, but the rest of them, which are all about the same level are solid prospects too. You cant probably get into the third round this year with RB’s who will be a starting 3 down back. That said, i looked at the prospects that were taken after him, and i just dont see anyone i would have rather had, with exception of maybe CJ Henderson. Swift probably was BPA at that selection.

  62. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You don’t hear it much anymore but the process used to be “Down. Set. Hike.” On “Set” the OL would get down in their stance which usually meant putting your hand on the ground. After that, you could not move. On “Down” you’d get in sort of a three quarter set but you could still move. Dallas’ OL was simply going from their “down” position to a standing position before they got set. All legal. It has nothing to do with where the QB is with regard to the OL.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its does because the QB getting under center is when they did down and set. The QB coming out from under center is when the OL could stand back up. If the QB is under center, the OL cant move. They still do it in the NFL now, watch games when the QB gets under center then comes out from under center, you will see the OL will a lot of times stand back up. He get back under center they get set and cant move.

  63. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
You can move if the QB is under center. At least you used to be able to. Now, if he calls out set when he gets under center, you can’t. With all the shotgun we see now it doesn’t come into play as much but you can move until you’re set, regardless of whether the QB is under center or not if he hadn’t called for the OL to get set. But ya know, I’m going off how things worked about 40 years ago. Lol

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This is football 101, once the OL put their hand down they can’t move, QB position means nothing.

    Randy you owe a beer.

Naples and i were talking about this up the page. This is the play i said looked like Tim’s 80’s aerobics dancers, lol.

  66. D's avatar D says:

Just looked it up, and they can get out of their stance as long as its not an abrupt movement intended to simulate the snap. They are allower to stand back up, IF for example the QB steps back and does an audible. Again, to me that means if QB is set to take the snap because any movement at that point would be a simulation of the snap. You see it all the time. Hell it was an ever friggin play thing with Peyton Manning.

  67. D's avatar D says:

A lot of OL dont even get in 3 point stances anymore, its just a different game and the rules have adapted to the new game.

  68. D's avatar D says:

If ya’ll dont believe me watch any game and i promise you will see them line up, QB get under center, OL get down, and then QB steps back away and starts audible and then OL stand back up , QB goes back under center, and they get back down again.

  69. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Melvin Gordon rumors…..
    Thoughts?

Mine is rather not pay for a RB.

    • D's avatar D says:

I mean, i dont like paying big money for a FA RB, but FA RB’s are relatively cheap at the highest payscale vs other positions. The good thing about a FA RB is you kinda know their game has transitioned to the NFL, no worrying if he can do this or that, you already know. He’s not a top 5 RB, but he is one of the better ones so 7-8mil per year, 3-4 year contract wouldn’t break our bank and i think its about what he will be worth.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That would be a huge mistake. Just draft a RB

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have no problem with drafting a RB in the 1st round if you think he’s a special talent and you’re going to use him. If you draft one early and he gets 7-8 rushes and 1-2 catches per game what was the point?

      • D's avatar D says:

I dont prefer getting one in FA, but im not as apprehensive because usually even a top one doesn’t put you in cap hell because the contracts are low.

I think if we took Swift we would really 180 our offense in that pick, plus some work on the OL, and it would take a ton of pressure off whatever QB is in there.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and im with ya Tim, if we took one that early, we damn sure better use him.

  70. D's avatar D says:

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Maybe something in the water makes teams in California pay their RB squad 20+mil but the majority of teams have salaries in the 4-7 per year range. (LA Chargers being an anomaly at 700k) only 6 out of 32 pay more than 13 to the entire RB room.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/breakdown/

Special teams is the only position group paid less than RB/FB

    • D's avatar D says:

IMO it coming son for WR’s. They are getting to be the new RB’s where grabbing a new guy in the draft gets you about the same player as a vet in FA. As things keep going i wouldnt be surprised to see WR contracts actually go down on average.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think paying WRs massive contracts is a good investment. They don’t touch the ball enough on average. If there is a special WR that changes games on a regular basis, I get that. But how many of those are in the league? Julio Jones is a great player but he can only do so much and his production doesn’t always equate to wins.

It makes sense that top QBs get paid big and the guys who get after them. The only way to stop or slow down a top QB is to pressure him, hit him and sack him. I don’t care how good your secondary is, if you don’t pressure the QB they’ll find guys open.

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – No question. We absolutely have to use our backs much more than we have. I mean we used Frank Gore pretty well but we never seemed to get any of the other guys any consistent work except Drake at the end of 2018 and Walton in the beginning of 2019

  73. D's avatar D says:

Ok, i think i found the disconnect Steve. OL are allowed to move, but you were right they cannot get into 3 point stance nor simulate a 3 point stance, i think i was remembering we would do the clap thing and then get into the three point stance, which is allowed as long as its done 1 second prior to the snap. Part of what im saying is accurate though, since in this new NFL OL dont go into a 3 point stance all the time, as long as they are in a 2point stance they can move as long as the move isnt abrupt and they are set 1 second before the snap, as any person in motion must be. So my bad i am wrong, but i was sure the rule included the QB not being under center.

  74. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The abrupt movement is true of anyone on offense, no one can simulate a snap. Watch TEs, they deliberately move slow, so the don’t simulate a snap.

  92. D's avatar D says:

So i didn’t really think the president self promoting. He was delivering the state of the union, ie the fact that we are in a better position than we have been economically. I think he definitely was doing in Trump typical brash arrogant delivery style, but he never said I am the reason, he just stated where the country is in relation to where it was, which is exactly the point of the SOTU speech.

The straight point is, he is who he is, he is part entertainer, part promoter, part arrogant ass, and if you dont like these qualities you made that SOTU speech about him pimping him, if you like the guy and those qualities, you saw it as uplifting and a sign of progress. It really boils down to if ya like him or hate him.

As for Pelosi and several of the other democrats and their actions, no matter how ya slice it, it was unprofessional, not standing, tearing up the speech in full view of the camera and her party buddies, while the President wrapped up the speech, is in disgusting taste. Not paying attention to the speech, talking and texting during it, its childish, its pandering, its is not what a person in their positions should ever do. If she/they have problems with the speech, she/they are disgusted by it, then take that shit outside and speak to the press about it. Pick a different platform than that to show your disdain.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It was definitely a push-back after all the impeachment and general Democratic attempts to bring him down. Kinda like that Elton John song “I’m still standing”

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think not standing or not applauding deviates from the way state of the unions go

They have a right to express their views to the individual statements and policies and that’s good for us as voters so we can judge them good or bad. You want to see visually who agrees with what, bc we vote for or against them too.

I would draw the line though at things lie shouting “you lie” which happened to Obama at a State of the Union or chanting “HR 3” which is disruptive to what is being said. I don’t think our elected officials should obstruct what is being said to any extent that might get in the way of me hearing it, even if they disagree or even if I disagree.

I don’t consider standing or not or applauding or not pandering though- I think that’s good for all of us. We need to judge who supports and who doesn’t support to make informed decisions.

but tearing up the speech was a little theatrical for my taste

I thought the speech was trash too and I like the sentiment expressed and won’t call it childish or unprofessional though, bc relative to the things the president has said/done, it’s nothing. No one should be deeply offended by Pelosi and turn a blind eye to Trump. That’s just a double standard. That’s said, it was pointless except to achieve positive feedback from people who already agree with you (i.e. pandering). Maybe she wanted to achieve that – but it still is not my taste and I don’t see a benefit achieved from it.

At this point we are 10 mos away from the election. People should really be putting their head down and grinding away at 1. making sure there is a big voter turnout; 2. making sure people know your policies so that voters can make informed decisions.

Theatrics and that sort of stuff, whether from some one I like or not, is being tuned out. I know everyone hates each other. I’ve heard that story before…lol It is what it is.

What is your direction/plan? That’s what important.

I also think people need to stop talking about these things like they are unique to our time. We aren’t spiraling out of control. Adversarial politics are a product of design. They are Jacksonian politics. Some of our current politicians are reckless and sloppy when they engage in it, but really they are acting on that design. (a design that I hate). The politicians aren’t unique to our time. The fact that they hate each other isn’t either. What is unique is the spread of information and misinformation in it’s speed and volume. And I don’t consider that unique change nefarious, I think its the product of technology.

  93. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    From NFL.com:

    “1. Miami Dolphins
    Projected salary cap space: $89,390,424

Team needs: OT, QB, EDGE, iOL, CB, RB, LB, S, DL, TE

Miami has a laundry list of needs and a ton of salary cap room so they theoretically do not need to make any drastic changes. However, wide receiver Albert Wilson is scheduled to count $10,833,334 against the salary cap in 2020 if he is on the roster. If the team cuts him, it would cost roughly $1.3 million. They could save $9.5 million by parting with a player that had a good but not great season. ”

The problem I see with cutting Wilson is that you do, you have use a pick to replace him. Given that $13M for a good WR isn’t terrible and that Miami has a decent receiver room, I would keep him for another year. Use the pick (or FA signing) on a position of greater need.
